2. About The Author
My name is Ashley. I am 11
years old. I enjoy shopping,
and learning about exotic
animals. A hobby of mine is
playing the saxophone. I’m
writing about the llama because
they are unique and different.
Llamas are very interesting
animals. Llamas are also very
cute. I
mean, who can resist their
adorable faces?
3. Who Am I?
I am a llama. I’m a great
pack animal. I can
carry 25-30 percent of
my own weight for 5-8
miles! I have two-toed
feet that keep me nice
and sturdy. I can’t give
adults rides on my
back, but I love giving
little kids rides. I almost
always have soft fur.
4. The Early Years
When a llama is born
they’re called a “
Cria”. A cria is born
with short soft fur.
Since llamas are
mammals, crias are born
alive. A cria is
usually up and nursing
in about a hour and a
half. When a cria grows
up it will grow to be
45” at the shoulder,
and 5ft at the neck and
head, it’ll weigh 280
pounds and it will live
to be about 15-25 years
old
5. Habitat Sweet Habitat
Llamas are found on
mountains, and farms.
Some people even keep
them as pets. Llamas
don’t hibernate, they only
move up and down the
mountain. In the summer
the llamas move to the
top of the mountain where
it’s cooler. In the winter,
llamas move to the bottom
of the mountain where it’s
warmer.
6. What’s On The Menu?
Llamas are herbivores.
They eat grass,herbs,
and other plants.
Llamas are ruminants,
which means that their
stomach has three parts
to it. They partially chew
their food, then later it
regurgitates, or comes
back up as cud.
7. Making Tracks
Llamas have two-toed feet with toenails
on them, and pads on the bottom.
You can find these tracks in the
mud on a farm, or in dirt on a
mountain.
8. Simply Irresistible
Llamas do have a voice. Usually they
hum or make weird noises. When
llamas are mad, angry, overheated,
or trying to protect their family,
they scream, spit, and kick.
9. Where In The World?
In the year 1564 B.C, Spanish
explorers found the first llama on
the Andes Mountain. The
Spanish explorers told their
people that there was close to
20,000 of them on the
mountain!Even though they were
found in South America,they are
sometimes found on farms in
North America too!
