9. Anaconda live in the Amazon

10. Anaconda can eat an animal as big as a deer but they only eat 3 or 4 times a year.

11. Female Anaconda are 5 times larger than males! Their average length is 12 feet. Their average weight is 120 pounds!

14. There are 33 kinds of Piranhas in the Amazon River.

15. Amazon people believe that Piranhas help clean the river system.

19. The red-bellied piranha is feisty and vicious. They swim fast and have sharp teeth and powerful jaws. Together, they swarm weak and dying prey and they don’t care how big it might be!

20. The FulaPreta eats fruits that fall from the limbs of trees, or other fish. Docile or aggressive. Whatever they need to be.

21. Some people believe that Piranhas will eat people. The most common way people are bit though is when they take a hook out of one’s mouth. People do eat piranhas! It is said that Black piranhas are sweet and bony!

25. Dart Frogs

26. Poison Dart Frogs live in the Amazon.

27. What the frog eats in the Amazon helps him create a toxin. This protects the frog from predators.

28. Neon Tetra live in the Amazon. They are colorful. You can buy them in pet stores in the U.S.

29. Suckermouth Catfish are native to the Amazon River in Brazil. They are called the “armadillo of the river” because they have bony plates that are like armor and camouflage.

30. Freshwater stingrays live in the Amazon River. They turn the color of their environment in order to camouflage.

31. Children of the Amazon shuffle their feet when they play in the river so that they do not step on a freshwater Stingray barb.

32. A top predator of the Amazon is the Black Caiman. They are an important part of the food chain.

34. Yellow-headed Amazon Parrots live in the Amazon.

35. Sadly, they are an endangered species. People like to have them as pets because they can learn to speak and they like to sing.

40. Amazon people have festivals just like us. This is a costume from the Fish Festival in the town of Barcelos. The people there celebrate all of the benefits that fish bring to the community.

41. Literature Connection: The Amazon Voyage featured a skit about some of the folktales associated with the Amazon River and Region based on the book, Folktales of the Amazon.
