Porcupines are herbivorous rodents found in North and South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia. They have sharp quills on their back, sides, and tail that act as a defense against predators. Female porcupines give birth to 1-4 babies that have soft quills at birth that harden after a few days. Porcupines spend much of their time in trees and use their tails to aid in climbing. They eat bark, stems, and have been known to chew on man-made items like canoe paddles. Their tracks show four toes on the front foot and five on the hind foot.
