Chapter 11—Waves
• The greatest distance that particles in a medium move
from their normal position when a wave passes

Amplitude
• Any interference in which waves combine so the
resulting wave is bigger than the original wave

Constructive Interference
• The highest point of a transverse wave

Crest
• Wave caused by a disturbance in electric and magnetic
fields—DOES NOT require a medium (Ex: Light)

Electromagnetic Waves
• Any interference in which waves combine so the
resulting wave is smaller than the largest of the original
waves

Destructive Interference
• The bending of a wave as it passes an edge/opening

Diffraction
• An observed change in the frequency of a wave when the
source or observer is moving

Doppler Effect
• The number of vibrations that occur in a 1 second time
interval

Frequency
• The combination of 2+ waves that exist in the same place
at the same time

Interference
• Wave that causes the particles of the medium to vibrate
parallel to the wave’s direction.

Longitudinal Wave
• The matter through which a wave travels

Medium
• Waves that require a medium

Mechanical Wave
• The time required for one full wavelength to pass a
certain point

Period
• The bouncing back of a wave as it meets a
surface/boundary

Reflection
• The bending of a wave as it passes from one medium to
the other.

Refraction
• Wave form caused by interference that appears not to
move along the medium that shows some regions of no
vibration (nodes) and other regions of maximum
vibrations (antinodes)

Standing Wave
• Wave that causes the particles of the medium to vibrate
perpendicular to the direction the wave travels.

Transverse Wave
• The lowest part of a transverse wave

Trough
• A disturbance that carries energy through matter and
space

Wave
• The distance between ant 2 successive identical parts of a
wave.

Wavelength
• The speed at which a wave passes through a medium
