The Environmental Change and the Collapse of Easter Island
The environmental change and the collapse of Easter Island
Ruud Coumans
In this paper, we will search for an explanation of the mystical collapse of society on Easter Island,
during the 18th century. We'll use the second chapter for the book "Collapse. How Society Choose
to Fail or Succeed" by Jared Diamond. First we will summarize some of the evidence supporting the
explanatory framework of the author to give an outline of the situation. Then we will state the
research question. After that we will talk about the underlying process where we will discuss the
actions of the assumptions of the actors goals, the theory of the action implied and the initial
conditions. We will finish with a conclusion.
In his first chapter proposed the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With climate change he does not mean global warming, but the fact that climate may vary between
months or years. The problem is that in the time of the Easter Island most people only lived long
enough to witness one climate, and not for example a time of plenty and a time of little rain. The
inhabitants of the island therefore had no firsthand memory of a previous period of little or plenty
rain. Therefore, every time they had to come up with a new strategy because they did not know an
old strategy. Another problem with good and bad decades is that after a good period there is too
much population to be supported, and after a bad time there are not enough people to deal with a
climate change. There is not much known about the climate changes at Easter Island. But, we do
know that the population changed a few times because of kidnapping and different epidemics. This
means that although there may have not been a lot of climate change, there was a constant change in
the number of people living on the island who may have not known how to deal with different
circumstances. The third and fourth factor Diamond mentions are hostile neighbors and trade
partners. But, because Easter Island was an island almost completely isolated from the rest of the
world , these factors cannot have played an important role in the collapse of the island. Although in
the book is mentioned that the Easter Islanders sometimes had visitors, these visits were not

Climate Change And Environmental Threats
Climate change and environmental threats came more into focus in the last years and presently they
represent a large challenge for the society. This means that environmental considerations have to be
integrated into a number of different decisions made by businesses, individuals, policymakers and
public administrators (Finnveden et al.
2009). Environmental Systems analysis is the field that 'attempts to find supply technology systems
solutions to these challenges' (Chalmers University, 2012)
In the last years, many tools and methods have been developed to evaluate the environmental
impacts of different systems, such as Life Cycle Assessment, Environmental Impact Assessment
(EIA), Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA), Strategic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Environmental effects include the materials and energy resources required to make the product, and
also, the wastes and emissions produced in the process. It is often called as 'cradle to grave' view of
seeing resource consumption (Pehnt 2006). Results of LCAs can be valuable for recognizing areas
with large environmental impact, and for evaluating and improving designs. Therefore, in order to
identify the environmental performances, for example, emissions and energy savings, from different
type of renewable energy, a full evaluation from 'cradle to grave' should be done. LCA is then has
been the method to measure the total impact of resource consumption. LCA is a multistep technique
for calculating the lifetime environmental impact of a product or service.
The International Standard ISO 14040 described the levels of an LCA as follows:
Goal and scope definition
Inventory analysis
Impact assessment
Interpretation of results Figure 7.1 Phases of a LCA study (ISO, 2006)
7.1 Life cycle assessment and micro CHP systems
There are only a few studies at present that focus on LCA of SOFC implemented systems (Staffell

Lunghi et al. 2004). The majority of them focus on the use phase of the SOFC unit, considering only
natural gas as a fuel. Staffell et al (2012) carried out a carbon footprint assessment of a SOFC based

North America Environmental Changes
1.The introduction to new plants, animals, and technologies altered the natural environment of
North America by impacting its economy and improving the overall natural environment of North
America. For example, after the native new world plants such as tobacco, maize, beans, tomatoes,
and lowly potato eventually revolutionized and drastically improved the international economy, in
return the Old World introduced crops and animals to the Americans(New World). Columbus
supplied the Old World with animals such as cattle, swine, and horses; the horses made the
environment highly mobile and wide ranged traveling through the Old World. Columbus also
brought sugar kane, which flourished and forced the migration of millions of African slaves to the
New World. Unfortunately, during ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The altering of the environment affected various groups such as, the native people and European
colonizers. For example, the Old World diseases quickly devastated the native Americans. The
population of the Taino natives in Hispaniola drastically shrunk from 1 million people to about 200.
Furthermore, because of the rapid spread of germs among the New World people, as many as 90
percent of the population of the Native Americans vanished. This was so severe that entire cultures
and ancient ways of life were gone forever. Agriculture also changed due to the emergence of
modern agriculture. This was started by 2 Germans, Alexander von Humboldt, and Justus von
Liebig. Alexander von Humboldt was the first to take an interest in the indigenous people who
cracked chunks off the rocky cliffs where birds perched along the Peruvian coast. This resulted in
the creation of a powder, chemist Justus von Liebig then recognized that it had high nitrogen and
phosphorus content. The high amount of nitrogen and phosphorus content made it a fascinating
fertilizer, it was called guano. This fertilizer became a very important import product, estimating to
about 15 billion dollars worth of export in today's

Environmental Issues: The Global Change Research Act Of 1990
In the recent years The Global Change Research Act of 1990 established a policy to support the
research on climate change. According to the EPA's website, it tells you about climate change, as
you are aware that there are many reasonable factors, both natural and human, that can cause the
Earth's climate change. It also shows that water pollution is the contamination of water bodies, like
rivers, lakes, aquifers, groundwater and oceans. This usually happen in the environment when
pollutants are directly put into the water bodies without any proper treatment to remove harmful
compounds. As I go further in my research I have come to the knowledge that one of the most major
problem that the world is facing is environmental pollution. It

The Effects Of Environmental Damage, Climate Change,...
The main ideas of the book are societal impact of environmental damage, climate change, hostile
neighbors, withdrawal of support of friendly neighbors, and cultural responses. Some environmental
responses were successful because a lot of ancient societies such as the Anasazi and their neighbors
started constructing a very extensive irrigation systems. It was successful because the anasazian's
were living at higher elevation and cropping on the lower lands and they needed a way to transport
water to there. Throughout the book Diamond used many different sources. Especially in chapter 1
he uses six different sources. One of these sources is a personal story of him and Montana. He also
uses stories from Stan Falkow, Rick Laible, Chip Pigmen, Tim Huls, and John Cook all in chapter
one. In chapter five of the book Diamonds shows multiple pictures of old societies such as rwanda,
eastern islands, Anasazi, Maya, Greenland, New Guiena, Dominican Republic, China, and Australia.
These pictures are an excellent source because it shows a sense of climate in the pictures and you
can see the type of regions he's talking about. He also has pictures of current societies such as Los
angeles, California he shows a picture from a helicopter that shows a interchange of freeways. It
shows the advancements that we now have in our society it shows the advancements as far as car
but in my eyes I also see al the pollution they cause in the environment. In this book diamond uses

Global Warming Is The Environmental And Social Changes...
Overview
Global warming are the environmental and social changes caused by human emissions of
greenhouse gases. Human activities have been the primary cause of this significant change, resulting
with extreme weather conditions, increasing sea level, and climate changes. In this paper I will
compare and contrast natural versus anthropogenic climate changes of global warming, mitigation
strategies, mitigation effectiveness, policy implications, costs, and address some policy changes to
help stabilize global climate and strict standards for business sectors or nations.
Natural Climate change
The Earth has been experiencing a considerable amount of climate change for the last several
decades. Natural factors that contribute to the climate system consist of: volcano activity, solar, and
earth's orbit around the sun. The two factors relevant on timescales of contemporary climate change
are changes in volcanic activity and changes in solar radiation. The Earth's energy balance primarily
influences the amount of incoming energy. Volcanic eruptions have relatively short–term effect on
climate. Changes in solar output have contributed greatly to climate trends over the past century.
The effect of additions of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere has been about ten times that of
changes in the Sun's output. The ocean covers more than 70 percent of the Earth's surface and
receives twice the amount of earth's radiation. Although the sun is the engine that drives all the

Critics frequently use the term tar sands, whereas industry and governments lean more towards the
oil sands. This is a result of the nuances associated with the word tar as being something that is dirty
or less valuable than oil and more importantly, the abandonment of the word tar sands comes from
an insistent and well–funded strategy to frame oil in a positive light to increase profits for the big oil
companies and provincial governments involved. With the adoption of the 'oil sands' into the
everyday vernacular, the tar sands' controversial and threatening characteristics become more and
more hidden. The power to (re)name thus:

Alberta's oil sands have been fuelling the Canadian economy since their discovery and are easily

Horse Environmental Changes
The environmental changes that took place throughout history caused species of animals to adapt to
the changing conditions. One such animal where this is especially apparent is the evolution of the
horse. In order to survive, horses evolved traits such as longer limbs, rigid teeth and others that
allowed them the best chance of survival. Overall, it is apparent that the morphology of the horse
changed due to environmental conditions, especially when studying the fossilized teeth, jaws, and
limbs. One of the earliest horse species is known as Hyracotherium. It is believed that this species
did not live on open grasslands like modern horses but instead, lived in thick, closed canopy forests.
As we saw in lab, the teeth of Hyracotherium are rather pointed which indicates that the species was
a browser of leaves and fruits in forests. Its small skull and rostrum also leads one to believe that it
had a diet of these easily chewable foods found in closed canopy forests. In contrast, the modern
horse has very flat rigid teeth which indicates the species is a grazer of grass. In class, one of the
trends we observed was that phalange number decreased over time (Lab Data). An organism with
more phalanges typically exhibits better dexterity, balance, ... Show more content on

This makes sense because if few muscles attach to the limbs, the total weight of the limb is reduced,
allowing for increased speed. This kind of limb is very effective when it comes to transferring
muscular energy into forward motion, allowing for incredible endurance (Lab Notes). It would
enable horses to run away from predators. We also observed the formation of the hoof. Over time,
the outer metatarsal decreased in length compared to the central metatarsal. Another trend we saw
was that the central metatarsal increased in length over the course of history (Lab Data). This would
further allow for increased speed, but less

Environmental Change : The Environmental Effects Of...
Climate change is known worldwide and the environmental effects on our planet cannot be
disregarded. Understanding the distinction among climate and weather is imperative in
understanding how certain variables add to the change of temperature. These variables can include
natural causes of the Earth's decay over time, however, scientists are well aware that human error
and our daily lifestyles contribute to the poor conditions that our earth is falling into. When humans
just started to exist on Earth, human impacts on the environment occurred in only a minimal and
insignificant quantity. This occurred because of small populations and the absence of innovation and
technology around them. When humans adjusted to the environment and figured out how to expand
and humans became inventors, and innovators, the population started to develop and future
expanded. However, not all that we as humans invent and contribute to our society is clean, or
natural. Some of it can be toxic, and some of it can be harmful to our atmosphere and our homes. By
the present guidelines, individuals living past the age of eighty years of age, is a noteworthy
achievement for humankind. Fuller lives from the inhabitants of earth implies that more assets from
the earth will be used. However, this is not suggesting that we as humans should not want to lives
longer lives. It suggests that we as humans should live smarter, cleaner, fuller lives. The cleaner we
are as humans, and use the lowest amount of earth

Neolithic Environmental Changes
Throughout history, many changes occurred regarding the way humans got their food. These
changes are usually caused by environmental changes and having to adapt to them. Adapting to new
environments can cause long–term political, social, and economic effects on societies and regions. A
lot of the changes regarding food production mainly happened during the Neolithic Revolution.
Before the Neolithic Revolution, humans had to depend more on animals than plants as a food
source. The Paleolithic men "... relied on foraging, hunting, fishing, and trapping..." They couldn't
control their food supply therefore had to depend on doing these things in order to keep from
starving. Paleolithic men had to adapt to weather change and animal migration. ... Show more

began to cultivate edible plants and to breed animals." This change from food–gathering to food–
producing initiated the Neolithic Age. Instead of living in scattered hunting communities, farmers
lived in villages. Because food was available where they lived they were able to live in a certain
place for a long time instead of having to move from place to place. Near these villages, small towns
grew up and later cities did too, this made civilization possible. In these towns and cities they
stopped making food and began to make tools instead. They traded these tools, which farmers
needed, in exchange for food. Trading then became more relevant. In order to be able to control the
exchange of goods people became merchants. Many merchants became extremely wealthy and
powerful. Since food became more available and a surplus the population began to grow. They also
had more free time. In their free time they were able to specialise in other pursuits that weren't
farming and tool–making, such as milling, pottery, weaving, and carpentry. In order to control the
villages and protect them from crimes and threats that happened inside and outside the villages they
had to create some sort of government. There were people who "... were in a position to enforce
laws, punish law–breakers, rule over internal disputes, fight wars, and commission public

The Importance Of Environmental Change On The Environment
Environmental change on the planet can be caused by different exercises. At the point when
environmental change happens; temperatures can expand a significantly. At the point when
temperature rises, a wide range of changes can happen on Earth. For instance, it can bring about
more surges, dry seasons, or extraordinary rain, and in addition more continuous and extreme
warmth waves. Seas and icy masses have additionally encountered a few changes: seas are warming
and ending up more acidic, ice sheets are dissolving, and ocean levels are rising. As these
progressions regularly happen in future decades, they will probably exhibit difficulties to our
general public and condition.
Amid the previous century, human exercises have discharged a lot of carbon dioxide and other
nursery gasses into the air. The vast majority of the gasses originate from consuming petroleum
derivatives to deliver vitality. Nursery gasses resemble a cover around the Earth, catching vitality in
the climate and making it warm. This is known as the nursery impact and it is characteristic and
important to help life on earth. Be that as it may, while nursery gasses development, the atmosphere
changes and result in perilous impacts to human wellbeing and biological communities. Individuals
have adjusted to the steady atmosphere we have appreciated since the last ice age which finished a

The Environmental Crisis Of Kenya And The United Nations...
The environmental crisis is the biggest crisis of our time, climate change, scarcity of fresh water and
bio diversity loss are just a few of the problems caused by the environmental crisis. National and
international organizations try combat the dire effects of the environmental crisis like The Green
Belt Movement in Kenya and The United Nations framework on Environmental Change, they create
initiatives like sustainable development but they have not succeeded. My essay will introduce my
interpretation of the environmental crisis, then follow with the relationship between poverty and
affluence discussed by scholars Deborah Sik in, Environment and Development and Maggie Black
in, Enter "Sustainability" and propose, Deborah Sik's insights on property rights and participatory
approaches offer the best explanation for the environmental crisis but Maggie Black's Resource
Based Management for small communities gives better long lasting solutions for the environmental
crisis.
My interpretation of environmental crisis and why it has grown exponentially. The environmental
crisis is the most exigent matter of our time. This is evident by environmental changes today, for
example in Enter Sustainability, Maggie Black discusses the probability for water wars due to over
extraction and consumption of water (Black). This claim is corroborated by an article by The

exponential growth in this segment has adopted the following changes to their marketing mix aspect
of Price and Products.
PRICE: A typical customer in this market segment would demand quality products / services. The
Company over the past years have increased the quality of their ice–cream duly enhancing its taste,

cost of dining at fast food chains such as McDonalds, Burger King etc. What would previously be
considered a basic priced item in the market would now be premium priced to provide the perceived
value to the targeted market segment.

Being "Green" is an economic and socially driven philosophy that many companies adapt in an
effort to help improve the environment and attract more customers into buying their products.
Companies claiming to be "Green" started when more customers became aware of the growing
effects of global warming and began to show interest in helping the environment by recycling,
reusing, and reducing their products. Two companies, McDonalds and Apple, sought to join the
Green Movement. They make the company look "Green" by eliminating their waste products that
mostly end up in landfills and by saving energy through renewable sources. However, their claims
may be questioned because of the way their products are made and the transportation involved in
shipping them. In the book, Soil Not Oil: Environmental Justice in a Time of Climate Crisis,

In the last century the climate of the earth has morphed and changed as a result of global warming.
The rise in temperature has contributed to the decreasing size of glaciers and ice sheets as well as
contributing the the rise of sea levels due to warmer oceans. The current evidence points to human
activity as a contributing factor. With the evidence currently available if can be predicted that with
continuing greenhouse gas emissions, the earth 's air temperature will warm by 4°C by the year
2100. Furthermore there are likely to be many flow–on effects from this temperature change
(Australian Academy of Science 2015)
With the change in climate the impacts of this process has altered the frequency and strength of
daily temperatures in terms of more hot days and warmer days as well as a drop in the quantity of
cooler days. Furthermore as a result the amount of more extreme weather events such as cyclones
and heavy rain patterns has increased as a result of warmer climates as well as warmer water
temperatures (Australian Academy of Science 2015). Over the last century sea level rise has
occurred as a result of expansion of the ocean due to warmer temperatures as well as the decreasing
size of ice packs and glaciers. This has caused a global sea level change of 10–25cm (IPCC 1995).

The interests people have are most important in future of humankind and protecting species in the
ecosystem which make the world what is it. The pressures people face regarding global climate
change are mainly economic pressures, but also ethical, and psychological. Many people cannot
afford hybrid cars or solar electricity. The ethical pressure people are faced with is that they are
contributing to the global climate change, and they could be doing more to prevent it. The
psychological pressure people are faced with is many people are in denial that global climate change
is happening; yet they also want their children 's children to grow up in a safe, healthy environment.
Non–human living things. The second stakeholder in this case of global climate change is all non–
human living things that encompass this planet. The effects of global climate change "may influence
not only human activities but also ecosystems. Some species may be forced out of their habitats,
possibly to extinction, because of changing conditions, while others may flourish" (Wikipedia,
2006, ¶26). For example, due to the diminishing ice in the Antarctic, krill (the food which penguins,
whales, and seals eat) is becoming lessened because it lives on the bottom of the ice. Similarly,
changes in timing of life patterns, such as annual migration dates, may alter regional predator–prey
balance.

Environmental Factors And Causes Of Climate Change In Kenya
Climate change in today's world has become of great concern due to its effects on the environment.
Globally, climate change has significantly influenced ecosystems and the existence of organisms.
This is further extending its effects to regional areas such as Kenya, whose ecosystem is not spared
by the changing climate. Despite having natural causes, Anthropogenic factors are widely increasing
and causing climate change undisputed. Therefore, human activities are the primary contributors to
climate change leading to stress and ecosystem strain, to continue providing for its services. In this
report, I discuss the summary of global climate change and regional focus on causes of climate
change in Kenya, its effects in ecosystem especially on the natural ecosystems, current measures to
curb the effects and the perception of the future ecosystem of the country.
Introduction
Climate change is defined as a "change of climate that is attributed directly or indirectly to human
activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere, and that is in addition to natural
climate variability observed over comparable time periods" (UNFCC, 1992). (source(GoK, 2012).

individuals see no reason to change their pattern if it works. How many times do we hear someone

The majority of the world 's climate troubles is due to the greenhouse effect. The truth lies within
the data, and it shows that global warming is caused by the greenhouse effect. Four main substances,
carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and the halocarbons, also called the greenhouse gasses, are
in the atmosphere. The greenhouse gasses act as a blanket and capture heat; the more of these gasses
there are, the more heat is trapped (Tremmel & Robinson 26–27). To simplify: when sunlight
reaches the Earth, some is absorbed while the rest bounces off into space again. Essentially, the
problem presented in modern times is that huge chunks of light are getting stuck on Earth, and too
much interaction is bad.
But what is the cause of the increasing amount of these greenhouse gasses that slowly destroy our
planet? The simple answer is humans. The Industrial Revolution marked one of the times of human
advancement in technology due to the creation of mass production. In other words, things could be

Climate Change Is An Environmental And Business Issue
Climate change is an environmental and business issue that has gained more and more attention
from society nowadays. The meaning of it seems to be not as easy as its name indicates which is
merely a difference in climate. NASA (2011) reports, "Climate change, therefore, is a change in the
typical or average weather of a region or city... Climate change is also a change in Earth 's overall
climate. This could be a change in Earth 's average temperature, for example." Therefore, climate
change in our world has various effects in our life, which, for example, like extreme weather, global
warming, higher sea–level and etc., do really affect our daily life and production process.
Understanding what the climate change is, and why these changes occur so frequently and
obviously in recent decades is of essential importance, not only for our economy, but also for
society. This paper is going to introduce how this issue links to the business world from several
dimensions. In the following paragraphs, the paper will demonstrate the complex relations between
climate change and business by exploring on: first, the interaction between business and climate
change with a brief stakeholder analysis; second, analyzing the business debates underpinning this
issue consisting of stakeholders/shareholders debates and long term/short term debates and the way
how business, and other stakeholders address the issue; third, figuring out potential solutions to
address the issue and its obstacles.

Environmental Concerns And Climate Change
Proposed Research
Environmental concerns and climate change are influencing and shaping the future of the power
industry. As a result, the electricity required to meet the growing demand is mainly generated from
renewable energy resources, and this trend is expected to continue in the next decades [1]. Hydro
and wind are major renewable energy resources and are free of greenhouse gas emissions [2]. This
makes them valuable environmentally sustainable and economic resources for power generation
around the world. A hydro–wind hybrid power system is an excellent combination for improved
reliability, where the resources abound [3]. In Newfoundland and Labrador, there is enormous
potential for hydro and wind renewable energy resources, with ... Show more content on

This condition imposes unique challenges on the planning and operation of a hydro–wind integrated
power system in a reliable manner [8]. Previous studies on wind penetration issues and solutions
found that the limiting factors of wind integration include penetration level, forecasting reliability,
geographic diversity, hydro generation flexibility and control of the overall system [6]. Control is a
key enabling factor for the deployment of renewable energy systems [9]. Control techniques such as
linear and dynamic programming, genetic algorithms, and neural networks, proposed by past
research, for the control and economic dispatch of renewable energy systems, have not been
acknowledged to be error free [3]. Two major flaws identified in existing techniques include the
lack of ease–of–use, and adaptability to new situations and evolving regulations [3]. These flaws
pose major operational challenges to utilities and thus, make control technologies optimization an
imperative research endeavor.
In 1998, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Policy 1 – Generation
Control and Performance Standard (CPS) – was enforced to ensure effective frequency control in
interconnected power systems. In this policy, for example, it is required that each balancing
authority shall achieve, as a minimum, CPS1 compliance of 100% (a measure of the correlation

Cold War Environmental Changes
Medical and Environment Advancements from the Cold War The Cold War had a major impact on
people's lives then, and now. Most people are using technology generated from the cold war today
without even knowing it. Even though the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. were allies during WWI, their
relationship became uneasy after WWII. The fear of communism spreading made it tense for the
American people. There were many advancements during this time because each country was trying
to determine which country was superior to one another. The medical and environmental
achievements were some of the most significant improvements in technology and they helped
America prosper then, as well as today.

After the war, the health of the children improved tremendously. Vaccines against polio, measles,
and rubella were developed. Polio is a crippling and potentially deadly disease that killed many
people and children. The first polio vaccine was developed by Jonas Stalk and came into use in
1955. The oral polio vaccine was developed by Albert Sabin and people started using it in 1961.
Measles is an infectious disease causing fever and a red rash on the skin. The introduction to the
vaccine occured in 1963. The vaccine helped eliminate hundreds and thousands of cases of measles
every year. Rubella is a contagious viral disease with symptoms like measles. It can cause fetal
malformation if it is contracted early in pregnancy. The rubella vaccine became available in 1963
and an improved one came out in 1968. Measles, rubella, and mumps were all combined into one
vaccine in 1971 called MMR. By 1930, the life expectancy had risen to sixty years old, and heart

Environmental Issues Of Climate Change
Climate change refers to any changes in climatic conditions, for example, temperature, precipitation
and wind patterns, which last for at least great amount decades. Before the Industrial Revolution,
which took a place in the mid–18th century, climate change was mostly because of natural reasons
such as changes in the sun's activity and volcanic eruption. nevertheless, recent climate change is
extensively attributed to human activities, since the mid–20th century to change climate change
worse. All of these are putting the lives facing the threaten and need to be dealt with as soon as
possible. Any delay in dealing with today's environmental topics will make the problems even more
difficult take action,That is why environmental protection organization is utmost to concern the
problem. In light of the serious problems, world leader was working closely and more
environmentally–friendly future, by encouraging conservation, developing sources of renewable
energy, formulating environmental policies, looking into the possibility new source energy to
replace nuclear power to solve climate change. Therefore, i disagree with it is too late to alleviate
climate change problem.
The problem of climate change can be alleviated by three different levels, namely the individual
level and the social level. Many people put forward the idea that individuals can do little to tackle
the problem of climate change and consider that the planet is beyond repair. For a matter of fact

The Environmental Consequences And Effects Of Climate Change
Climate change is a serious environmental issue which influences changes in temperature, humidity,
air quality, precipitation, and land surface wetness across the globe (Institute of Medicine [IOM],
2011). Small changes in these factors can snowball into larger and potentially disastrous outcomes
in climate and weather. For example, the 1.5°F increase in the average global temperature during the
past century has been accompanied by serious environmental consequences such as an increase in
floods, droughts, heavy rainfall, and more frequent and intense heat waves (Environmental
Protection Agency [EPA], n.d.). Over the next century, the increase in the Earth's average
temperature is predicted to rise by another 0.5 to 8.6°F (EPA, n.d.). The risk for additional severe
changes to the Earth's system is projected to increase, as well as the potential harm to the health of
the global population (World Health Organization [WHO], 2009). One way through which this is
expected to occur is through climate change affecting the indoor environment by creating favorable
conditions for the growth of mold, ultimately harming inhabitants' respiratory health (IOM, 2011).
According to a report by the Institute of Medicine's Committee on the Effect of Climate Change on
Indoor Air Quality and Public Health, climate–change–induced alterations to the outdoor
environment are likely to affect the indoor environment, and as a result, the health of its inhabitants
(2011). Climate change has increased the frequency and intensity of heavy rainfall and hurricane
events, leading to more breakdown of buildings, leaks and infiltration of water into the indoor
environment, and flooding (IOM, 2011). The issue of indoor dampness and flooding lies in the
creation of favorable conditions for the growth of mold. Moisture level has been shown to be the
primary factor responsible for indoor mold growth (IOM, 2011). Exposure to mold is associated
with various respiratory symptoms, such as coughing, wheezing, asthma exacerbation, and shortness
of breath in vulnerable individuals (IOM, 2011). This combination of climate change and the
subsequent increase in mold growth and exposure raises concerns for health, particularly the health
of those with existing

Climate Change – Environmental change.
WHAT IS IT?
Climate change is an occurrence of a change from patterns in weather which also affects land
surfaces and ice sheets in global or regional areas. When climate change occurs, it continues for
several decades. Climate change can often occur when there has recently been a volcano, such
changes in the patterns of sun radiation or internal variability.
During the last century, burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil has increased the concentration of
atmospheric carbon dioxide. This happens because the coal or oil burning process combines carbon
with oxygen in the air to make CO2. To a lesser extent, the clearing of land for agriculture, industry,
and other human activities has increased concentrations of greenhouse gases. WHAT EFFECT
DOES IT HAVE?
Climate change can cause many major consequences to the earth and its ways of living including
rising seas and increased coastal flooding, longer and more damaging wildfire seasons, more
destructive hurricanes etc. etc.
With global warming the vegetation with large areas; the earth changes. This leaves animals
remaining with reducing the amount of food, for instance, the koala's habitat is in a eucalyptus
forest which they feed on the leaves, but if too much carbon dioxide suddenly occurs near the area,
it changes the chemical composition leaving the leaves toxic to the koalas which threatens their
extinction.

Business plays a vitally important role in this issue because it has been a major contributor to carbon
in the atmosphere. Though climate change could be caused by thousands of reasons, like natural
factors, however, scientists think that the recent phenomenon of global warming can 't be explained
by nature alone. "Most scientists say it 's very likely that most of the warming since the mid–1900s
is due to the burning of coal, oil and gas...This burning adds heat–trapping gases, like carbon
dioxide, into the air. These gases are called greenhouse gases" (NASA, 2011). The industrial
production which needs tons of fuels and other raw materials burned is an enormous source of
greenhouse gases which might be the most core factor of causing climate change.
Business is also influenced by climate change in return which is changing the landscape of business.
Businesses that depend on water, like skiing industry, bottled spring water industry, the oil industry
and etc., are affected by climate change because these industries need a constant and steady supply
of water including different forms, for instance, snow. "Climate is an essential resource for tourism,

Greetings, my name is Syed Raza and today I am representing the provinces and the territories in
North of Canada. We will be discussing about the predicted and current changes caused by global
warming to the environment of Yukon, North West Territories and Nunavut. My aim is to discuss the
top three important environmental changes for which Canada and its people need to develop
adaptation plans. Well, surprisingly global average temperature has increased by 2C to 4C in the
past 55 years. Moreover, the precipitation has increased the most in the north, rising by 61 percent
in the Arctic Tundra and by 32 percent in the Arctic Mountains. Added to this, it is expected for the
temperature to rise 2C more by 2020 and 4C by 2050, affecting the natural ... Show more content on

Ground temperatures in parts of the North are warming by one–10th of a degree after every ten
years. Where ground ice contents are comparatively high, melting permafrost can have significant
impacts, some of which may take not be as willingly obvious as others. On ice, you do not need a
very sloped surface before you start to slip or slide and hence, that is what happens with the
permafrost and overlying land, resulting in landslides in the North. Also, melting permafrost leads to
subsidence, which occurs usually when permafrost thaws/melts and the soil formerly held up by the
ice caves in. An example of this would be about Iqaluit's Arctic Winter Games arena, where the
floor began to sink soon after the building opened in October 2001. It is predicted that permafrost
area may decrease by approximately thirty–seven to eighty–one percent by the end of the century!
As temperatures keep getting warmer, permafrost will continue to thaw. Moreover, changes in
permafrost have unpleasant results for infrastructure designed for permafrost conditions. Eventually,
pipelines, airstrips and roads need to be changed because they depend on permafrost for structural
integrity. The estimated costs to upgrade and fix buildings or infra–structure in Canada's North
could range from $250 million to $420 million. All these current/predicted changes due to melting
permafrost has resulted in a huge or major burden on the government resources.100 and 1000 of
people in North Canada live on permafrost. Once the frozen water turns into water, it makes it quite
difficult for the people in the towns to find drinking water. To conclude, melting permafrost in North
Canada has resulted in landslides, subsidence, damage to infra–structure and people are facing
trouble in accessing

The rising temperatures of global warming has initiated the melting of ice sheets, contributing to
global sea–level rise. Sea levels are expected to rise more than a metre beyond existing 'stable' tidal
range positions, resulting in new inundation of land and shifts in shorelines. Inundation and coastal
instability because of erosion, exaggerated by the extreme weather events caused by climate change,

Globalization and Environmental Change
Globalization and Environmental Change Introduction Globalization, described as the expansion,
intensification and acceleration of global interconnectedness, is one of the intense phenomena that
the contemporary era has experienced. It has influenced the monetary, ecological, and societal
characteristics of all the nations of the world. Due to both positive and negative consequences on the
life of the citizens the world over, globalization is one of the most talked about issue of this century
(Javed 2004). Globalization is a continuing and very controlling process. It has now become more
or less a natural happening and is not going to stop. Though it has benefitted the world in numerous
ways, globalization is also hurting the world frighteningly in a very theatrical way (Samli 2002). It
is evident from the fact that the well–organized and increasing human exploitation of the natural
resources obtained from the earth outlines the foundation for the scientific assertion "that the world
is about to experience a mass extinction every bit as great as that which destroyed the dinosaurs 65
million years ago" (Hedley 2002). It simply means that the humanity is facing global environmental
change as one of the most important challenges as a consequence of globalization. With the increase
in globalization, the environmental issues are also growing constantly. The issues that once were
threatening for a certain group of people on faraway places are now becoming a menace for all

The Extent to which Strategic Environmental Assessment...
1. Introduction
Climate change the 'wicked problem' is continuously imposing significant threat to the nature as
whole according to the recent projections (IPCC 2013; Bondeau et al. 2013). This anticipated hazard
is unavoidable to some extent though the source of the problem ('green house gas' emission) is
barred right now (IPCC 2014a). Combination of mitigation (reducing or capturing GHG) and
adaptation effort has been suggested both in the short and long term to achieve the complementary
advantage (i.e. cost) and to reduce the risk (IPCC 2014a; 2014b).
Transportation, residential and business energy use and industrial sector is the major contributor of
global GHG emission (EPA 2013). These three sectors are influenced actively by ... Show more

Carbon dioxide concentration has increased by 40% since the pre–industrial times, largely from
fossil fuel emissions and land use change emissions. Human intervention on the climate structure is
unambiguous. Further emissions of greenhouse gases will cause further warming and changes in all
components of the climate system. Most characteristics of climate change will continue for many
centuries even if emissions are stopped totally at this point (IPCC 2013; Bondeau et al. 2013).
2.2 Mitigation Need
'Mitigation is a human intervention to reduce the sources or enhance the sinks of greenhouse gases'
(IPCC 2014a). According to Fifth Assessment Report of IPCC (IPCC 2014a), technical and
behavioural mitigation instrument for all transport modes, in addition new infrastructure and urban
redevelopment investments could decrease final energy demand in 2050 by around 40% below the
baseline. Integrated urban planning, transit–oriented development, compact urban form that
supports cycling and walking, and new infrastructures such as high–speed rail systems that will
reduce short–haul air travel demand, can play a vital role for emission reduction (IPCC 2014a);
which can be guided at the very beginning of the policy and plan making through instruments like
SEA. Moreover, the next two decades present a window of opportunity for mitigation in urban
areas, as a significant segment of the world's 'transition/semi–urban' areas will be urbanized during
this period in

Social Construction Of Nature And Environmental Change
The assignment this week challenged us to utilize our course objectives to address the requirements
of the assignment. The objectives include how to apply the concepts of political ecology to
environmental concerns, analyze the link between social, cultural, geographic, cultural, political
factors, and environmental change, as well as assess methodological approaches used for research in
political ecology. In addition, this assignment will discuss how reserves and national parks have
been socially constructed/produced to be protected areas. Following this discussion, the
conversation will include an overview of how this construction of national parks and reserves may
result in the property rights reconstructing the resource into a rival good. Moreover, I will provide a
brief discussion on the relationship between social construction of nature and environmental change.
In conclusion, I will briefly review case studies and frameworks that are related to the conservation
of biodiversity.
The ability to apply concepts of political ecology to environmental concerns enables one to
understand why national parks and reserves have been socially constructed/produced. These
protected areas are legally protected to ensure their conservation because of the presence of given
environmental concerns. The article Ways of Seeing Africa: Colonial Recasting of African Society

Environmental Changes In African Savanna Essay
ear future tribute, In the African Savanna, the world's greatest diversity of Ungulates can be found.
The most important change is climate which affects every aspect of life. Comparing the mild
seasonal climate of Virginia to the climate of the tropical Savanna is a dramatic change. Instead of
mild seasons; high rainfall and periods of drought take place. Another change that must be made is
housing. Using limited natural resources, a house that is made of clay and wood best utilizes the
environment. Clay is in abundance in the soil, and trees are sparse but numerous. The last change
that must be made relates to food. A diet readily available in the wilderness of the Savanna would
include primarily plants such as Marula and Guardi, but also include insects and small animals. In
conclusion, great changes from middle class Virginia to the wilderness of the Tropical Savanna
include climate, housing and diet.
In a survival situation, life changes drastically, ranging from housing to diet and everything in
between. First of the important changes is climate, which exceedingly changes. In the coldest moths
of the year, temperatures range from 68–78 degrees and many plants shrivel up and die, or are

Environmental Changes In Lord Of The Flies
People are subject to change their way of life when their environment changes. The novel "Lord of
the Flies" is written by William Golding. The novel about a group of british boys who get trapped

go into a savage state of mind. However some had balance between savagery and civilization.
Throughout the novel Golding reveals that humans are conditioned by their environment to behave
in either moral, or immoral ways. Ralph illustrates that humans personalities can change because of
the environment they are in. When Ralph joins one of the tribes dances, his savagery takes over
when, " Ralph, carried away by a sudden thick excitement, grabbed Eric's spear and jabbed at
Robert with it"(114). This proves that when someone's environment changes so does their
personality. It displays that even the kindest of people can succumb to the dark side. However, when
the naval officer comes to rescue the boys Ralph began to, " Ralph wept for end of innocence, the
darkness of a man's heart..."(202). This reveals that when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

even a little bit of civilization is shown that can change for the better. When the twins are threatened
by Jack, the boys immediately give up Ralph's hiding spot, "'You're sure he meant in there'. The
twin moaned faintly and then squealed again. 'He meant he'd hide in there'" (192), but then regret it.
This proves that when the boys are threatened they give in to what savagery wants. When we realize

Environmental And Humanitarian Issue Of Climate Change
One of the clearest and foremost environmental and humanitarian issue the world faces today is
climate change yet, you would almost not seem to know given the little attention major News
Corporations, such as ABC, NBC, FOX, and CBS spend on addressing, or even acknowledging for
that matter, the issue. Just last year in 2015, all four of these major networks together spent a grand
total of 146 minutes of airtime discussing climate change. To put that into perspective, all four of
those major networks together spent less than one percent of one percent of the year talking about
climate change, or just over two hours of the year between all four major networks. To make matters
worse, not every minute of the time–consuming 146 minutes between all four major news networks
that was allot to cover climate change were engaged in any serious discussion about the ramification
or future implications it will have on the very near future. There are networks that find it in their
best interest (FOX news in particular) to somehow argue against the science of climate change, to
argue against the science backed liberal conspiracy that wants to destroy the American homeland (or
something as radical as that, I'm not too sure exactly what they [crazy evangelical Christian
conservatives] believe in). However, there is a bigger, more serious underlying issue here that is not
fully concerned with the media coverage that climate change unfortunately receives. The underlying
issue is perhaps why

Environmental Consequences Of Climate Change
Climate Change is a threat to public health. It affects the social and environmental determinants of
health–clean air, safe drinking water, sufficient food and secure shelter. Changes in the greenhouse
gas concentrations and other drivers alter the global climate and bring about a myriad of human
health consequences. Environmental consequences of climate change, such as extreme heat waves,
rising sea–levels, changes in precipitation resulting in flooding and droughts, intense hurricanes, and
degraded air quality have direct and indirect impact on the physical, social, and psychological health
of humans.

Impact of Climate Change on Health
Global warming is allowing an array of forgotten pathogens to emerge from the thawing
permafrost–and possibly reinfect humans. Organic matter like dead animals, moss and plants, long
preserved in ice, are now thawing, rotting, and releasing gases that not only spur global warming but
create a new breeding ground for bacteria and viruses.
Climate change is making heat waves hotter and more frequent which can cause heat exhaustion and
heatstroke or worsen pre–existing cardiovascular and respiratory conditions.
City residents also face a heightened risk because of warmer temperatures in cities from the urban
heat island effect, caused by the mostly paved surfaces that absorb and re–radiate heat and the lack
of green spaces and tree cover in these areas.

Current environmental health problems that will likely exacerbate due to climate change include
changes in air and water quality, and increase in parasite growth and chemical pollutants.
General climate change: cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, hypertensive heart disease,
and cancer will raise mortality rates.
Heat stress: most effected are the elderly population
Air pollution: Photochemical oxidants have adverse effects on human health. Inflammatory eye

Climate Change and Environmental Issues
Environmental Issues Climate Change Introduction Is global warming due to human activity or not?
Is there something societies around the world can do to halt the warming of the planet? What is the
key to societies developing a sustainable world and how do environmental dynamics impact
sustainability? These questions and others will be addressed from several perspectives in this paper.
Is global warming due to human activities? The view of Scientists The most authoritative and
objective source of information on climate change (or global warming, as some prefer to use) is the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a group that began researching climate change
in 1992. The IPCC was launched by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the
World Meteorological Organizations (WMO) in order to "...provide an objective source of scientific
information" (UN.org). It was clear by the middle of the 20th century, the UN explains, that as a
"...side effect of the industrial age...human action had significantly increased the production
of...carbon dioxide" one of the main greenhouse gases that contributes to global climate change. The
IPCC has its next major report due out in 2014, and while the IPCC does publish occasional white
paper findings between their major reports, the most recent report is called the Climate Change
2007: Working Group I: The Physical Science Basis. In that report there is a section called "Human
and Natural Drivers of Climate Change"

Environmental Change and Collapse of Easter Island Society

  • 1. The Environmental Change and the Collapse of Easter Island The environmental change and the collapse of Easter Island Ruud Coumans In this paper, we will search for an explanation of the mystical collapse of society on Easter Island, during the 18th century. We'll use the second chapter for the book "Collapse. How Society Choose to Fail or Succeed" by Jared Diamond. First we will summarize some of the evidence supporting the explanatory framework of the author to give an outline of the situation. Then we will state the research question. After that we will talk about the underlying process where we will discuss the actions of the assumptions of the actors goals, the theory of the action implied and the initial conditions. We will finish with a conclusion. In his first chapter proposed the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With climate change he does not mean global warming, but the fact that climate may vary between months or years. The problem is that in the time of the Easter Island most people only lived long enough to witness one climate, and not for example a time of plenty and a time of little rain. The inhabitants of the island therefore had no firsthand memory of a previous period of little or plenty rain. Therefore, every time they had to come up with a new strategy because they did not know an old strategy. Another problem with good and bad decades is that after a good period there is too much population to be supported, and after a bad time there are not enough people to deal with a climate change. There is not much known about the climate changes at Easter Island. But, we do know that the population changed a few times because of kidnapping and different epidemics. This means that although there may have not been a lot of climate change, there was a constant change in the number of people living on the island who may have not known how to deal with different circumstances. The third and fourth factor Diamond mentions are hostile neighbors and trade partners. But, because Easter Island was an island almost completely isolated from the rest of the world , these factors cannot have played an important role in the collapse of the island. Although in the book is mentioned that the Easter Islanders sometimes had visitors, these visits were not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Climate Change And Environmental Threats Climate change and environmental threats came more into focus in the last years and presently they represent a large challenge for the society. This means that environmental considerations have to be integrated into a number of different decisions made by businesses, individuals, policymakers and public administrators (Finnveden et al. 2009). Environmental Systems analysis is the field that 'attempts to find supply technology systems solutions to these challenges' (Chalmers University, 2012) In the last years, many tools and methods have been developed to evaluate the environmental impacts of different systems, such as Life Cycle Assessment, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA), Strategic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Environmental effects include the materials and energy resources required to make the product, and also, the wastes and emissions produced in the process. It is often called as 'cradle to grave' view of seeing resource consumption (Pehnt 2006). Results of LCAs can be valuable for recognizing areas with large environmental impact, and for evaluating and improving designs. Therefore, in order to identify the environmental performances, for example, emissions and energy savings, from different type of renewable energy, a full evaluation from 'cradle to grave' should be done. LCA is then has been the method to measure the total impact of resource consumption. LCA is a multistep technique for calculating the lifetime environmental impact of a product or service. The International Standard ISO 14040 described the levels of an LCA as follows: Goal and scope definition Inventory analysis Impact assessment Interpretation of results Figure 7.1 Phases of a LCA study (ISO, 2006) 7.1 Life cycle assessment and micro CHP systems There are only a few studies at present that focus on LCA of SOFC implemented systems (Staffell & Green 2012; Giannopoulos & Founti 2011a; Pehnt 2001; Pöschl et al. 2010; Patterson et al. 2011; Lunghi et al. 2004). The majority of them focus on the use phase of the SOFC unit, considering only natural gas as a fuel. • 3. North America Environmental Changes 1.The introduction to new plants, animals, and technologies altered the natural environment of North America by impacting its economy and improving the overall natural environment of North America. For example, after the native new world plants such as tobacco, maize, beans, tomatoes, and lowly potato eventually revolutionized and drastically improved the international economy, in return the Old World introduced crops and animals to the Americans(New World). Columbus supplied the Old World with animals such as cattle, swine, and horses; the horses made the environment highly mobile and wide ranged traveling through the Old World. Columbus also brought sugar kane, which flourished and forced the migration of millions of African slaves to the New World. Unfortunately, during ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The altering of the environment affected various groups such as, the native people and European colonizers. For example, the Old World diseases quickly devastated the native Americans. The population of the Taino natives in Hispaniola drastically shrunk from 1 million people to about 200. Furthermore, because of the rapid spread of germs among the New World people, as many as 90 percent of the population of the Native Americans vanished. This was so severe that entire cultures and ancient ways of life were gone forever. Agriculture also changed due to the emergence of modern agriculture. This was started by 2 Germans, Alexander von Humboldt, and Justus von Liebig. Alexander von Humboldt was the first to take an interest in the indigenous people who cracked chunks off the rocky cliffs where birds perched along the Peruvian coast. This resulted in the creation of a powder, chemist Justus von Liebig then recognized that it had high nitrogen and phosphorus content. The high amount of nitrogen and phosphorus content made it a fascinating fertilizer, it was called guano. This fertilizer became a very important import product, estimating to about 15 billion dollars worth of export in today's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Environmental Issues: The Global Change Research Act Of 1990 In the recent years The Global Change Research Act of 1990 established a policy to support the research on climate change. According to the EPA's website, it tells you about climate change, as you are aware that there are many reasonable factors, both natural and human, that can cause the Earth's climate change. It also shows that water pollution is the contamination of water bodies, like rivers, lakes, aquifers, groundwater and oceans. This usually happen in the environment when pollutants are directly put into the water bodies without any proper treatment to remove harmful compounds. As I go further in my research I have come to the knowledge that one of the most major problem that the world is facing is environmental pollution. It ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Effects Of Environmental Damage, Climate Change,... The main ideas of the book are societal impact of environmental damage, climate change, hostile neighbors, withdrawal of support of friendly neighbors, and cultural responses. Some environmental responses were successful because a lot of ancient societies such as the Anasazi and their neighbors started constructing a very extensive irrigation systems. It was successful because the anasazian's were living at higher elevation and cropping on the lower lands and they needed a way to transport water to there. Throughout the book Diamond used many different sources. Especially in chapter 1 he uses six different sources. One of these sources is a personal story of him and Montana. He also uses stories from Stan Falkow, Rick Laible, Chip Pigmen, Tim Huls, and John Cook all in chapter one. In chapter five of the book Diamonds shows multiple pictures of old societies such as rwanda, eastern islands, Anasazi, Maya, Greenland, New Guiena, Dominican Republic, China, and Australia. These pictures are an excellent source because it shows a sense of climate in the pictures and you can see the type of regions he's talking about. He also has pictures of current societies such as Los angeles, California he shows a picture from a helicopter that shows a interchange of freeways. It shows the advancements that we now have in our society it shows the advancements as far as car but in my eyes I also see al the pollution they cause in the environment. • 6. Global Warming Is The Environmental And Social Changes... Overview Global warming are the environmental and social changes caused by human emissions of greenhouse gases. Human activities have been the primary cause of this significant change, resulting with extreme weather conditions, increasing sea level, and climate changes. In this paper I will compare and contrast natural versus anthropogenic climate changes of global warming, mitigation strategies, mitigation effectiveness, policy implications, costs, and address some policy changes to help stabilize global climate and strict standards for business sectors or nations. Natural Climate change The Earth has been experiencing a considerable amount of climate change for the last several decades. Natural factors that contribute to the climate system consist of: volcano activity, solar, and earth's orbit around the sun. The two factors relevant on timescales of contemporary climate change are changes in volcanic activity and changes in solar radiation. The Earth's energy balance primarily influences the amount of incoming energy. Volcanic eruptions have relatively short–term effect on climate. Changes in solar output have contributed greatly to climate trends over the past century. The effect of additions of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere has been about ten times that of changes in the Sun's output. The ocean covers more than 70 percent of the Earth's surface and receives twice the amount of earth's radiation. Although the sun is the engine that drives all the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Critics frequently use the term tar sands, whereas industry and governments lean more towards the oil sands. This is a result of the nuances associated with the word tar as being something that is dirty or less valuable than oil and more importantly, the abandonment of the word tar sands comes from an insistent and well–funded strategy to frame oil in a positive light to increase profits for the big oil companies and provincial governments involved. With the adoption of the 'oil sands' into the everyday vernacular, the tar sands' controversial and threatening characteristics become more and more hidden. • 8. Horse Environmental Changes The environmental changes that took place throughout history caused species of animals to adapt to the changing conditions. One such animal where this is especially apparent is the evolution of the horse. In order to survive, horses evolved traits such as longer limbs, rigid teeth and others that allowed them the best chance of survival. Overall, it is apparent that the morphology of the horse changed due to environmental conditions, especially when studying the fossilized teeth, jaws, and limbs. One of the earliest horse species is known as Hyracotherium. It is believed that this species did not live on open grasslands like modern horses but instead, lived in thick, closed canopy forests. As we saw in lab, the teeth of Hyracotherium are rather pointed which indicates that the species was a browser of leaves and fruits in forests. Its small skull and rostrum also leads one to believe that it had a diet of these easily chewable foods found in closed canopy forests. In contrast, the modern horse has very flat rigid teeth which indicates the species is a grazer of grass. In class, one of the trends we observed was that phalange number decreased over time (Lab Data). An organism with more phalanges typically exhibits better dexterity, balance, ... • 9. Environmental Change : The Environmental Effects Of... Climate change is known worldwide and the environmental effects on our planet cannot be disregarded. Understanding the distinction among climate and weather is imperative in understanding how certain variables add to the change of temperature. These variables can include natural causes of the Earth's decay over time, however, scientists are well aware that human error and our daily lifestyles contribute to the poor conditions that our earth is falling into. When humans just started to exist on Earth, human impacts on the environment occurred in only a minimal and insignificant quantity. This occurred because of small populations and the absence of innovation and technology around them. When humans adjusted to the environment and figured out how to expand and humans became inventors, and innovators, the population started to develop and future expanded. However, not all that we as humans invent and contribute to our society is clean, or natural. Some of it can be toxic, and some of it can be harmful to our atmosphere and our homes. By the present guidelines, individuals living past the age of eighty years of age, is a noteworthy achievement for humankind. Fuller lives from the inhabitants of earth implies that more assets from the earth will be used. However, this is not suggesting that we as humans should not want to lives longer lives. • 10. Neolithic Environmental Changes Throughout history, many changes occurred regarding the way humans got their food. These changes are usually caused by environmental changes and having to adapt to them. Adapting to new environments can cause long–term political, social, and economic effects on societies and regions. A lot of the changes regarding food production mainly happened during the Neolithic Revolution. Before the Neolithic Revolution, humans had to depend more on animals than plants as a food source. The Paleolithic men "... relied on foraging, hunting, fishing, and trapping..." They couldn't control their food supply therefore had to depend on doing these things in order to keep from starving. This change from food–gathering to food– producing initiated the Neolithic Age. Instead of living in scattered hunting communities, farmers lived in villages. Because food was available where they lived they were able to live in a certain place for a long time instead of having to move from place to place. Near these villages, small towns grew up and later cities did too, this made civilization possible. In these towns and cities they stopped making food and began to make tools instead. They traded these tools, which farmers needed, in exchange for food. Trading then became more relevant. In order to be able to control the exchange of goods people became merchants. Many merchants became extremely wealthy and powerful. Since food became more available and a surplus the population began to grow. They also had more free time. In their free time they were able to specialise in other pursuits that weren't farming and tool–making, such as milling, pottery, weaving, and carpentry. In order to control the villages and protect them from crimes and threats that happened inside and outside the villages they had to create some sort of government. • 12. The Importance Of Environmental Change On The Environment Environmental change on the planet can be caused by different exercises. At the point when environmental change happens; temperatures can expand a significantly. At the point when temperature rises, a wide range of changes can happen on Earth. For instance, it can bring about more surges, dry seasons, or extraordinary rain, and in addition more continuous and extreme warmth waves. Seas and icy masses have additionally encountered a few changes: seas are warming and ending up more acidic, ice sheets are dissolving, and ocean levels are rising. As these progressions regularly happen in future decades, they will probably exhibit difficulties to our general public and condition. Amid the previous century, human exercises have discharged a lot of carbon dioxide and other nursery gasses into the air. The vast majority of the gasses originate from consuming petroleum derivatives to deliver vitality. Nursery gasses resemble a cover around the Earth, catching vitality in the climate and making it warm. This is known as the nursery impact and it is characteristic and important to help life on earth. Be that as it may, while nursery gasses development, the atmosphere changes and result in perilous impacts to human wellbeing and biological communities. My essay will introduce my interpretation of the environmental crisis, then follow with the relationship between poverty and affluence discussed by scholars Deborah Sik in, Environment and Development and Maggie Black in, Enter "Sustainability" and propose, Deborah Sik's insights on property rights and participatory approaches offer the best explanation for the environmental crisis but Maggie Black's Resource Based Management for small communities gives better long lasting solutions for the environmental crisis. My interpretation of environmental crisis and why it has grown exponentially. The environmental crisis is the most exigent matter of our time. This is evident by environmental changes today, for example in Enter Sustainability, Maggie Black discusses the probability for water wars due to over extraction and consumption of water (Black). Being "Green" is an economic and socially driven philosophy that many companies adapt in an effort to help improve the environment and attract more customers into buying their products. Companies claiming to be "Green" started when more customers became aware of the growing effects of global warming and began to show interest in helping the environment by recycling, reusing, and reducing their products. Two companies, McDonalds and Apple, sought to join the Green Movement. They make the company look "Green" by eliminating their waste products that mostly end up in landfills and by saving energy through renewable sources. However, their claims may be questioned because of the way their products are made and the transportation involved in shipping them. The rise in temperature has contributed to the decreasing size of glaciers and ice sheets as well as contributing the the rise of sea levels due to warmer oceans. The current evidence points to human activity as a contributing factor. With the evidence currently available if can be predicted that with continuing greenhouse gas emissions, the earth 's air temperature will warm by 4°C by the year 2100. Furthermore there are likely to be many flow–on effects from this temperature change (Australian Academy of Science 2015) With the change in climate the impacts of this process has altered the frequency and strength of daily temperatures in terms of more hot days and warmer days as well as a drop in the quantity of cooler days. Furthermore as a result the amount of more extreme weather events such as cyclones and heavy rain patterns has increased as a result of warmer climates as well as warmer water temperatures (Australian Academy of Science 2015). Over the last century sea level rise has occurred as a result of expansion of the ocean due to warmer temperatures as well as the decreasing size of ice packs and glaciers. The truth lies within the data, and it shows that global warming is caused by the greenhouse effect. Four main substances, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and the halocarbons, also called the greenhouse gasses, are in the atmosphere. The greenhouse gasses act as a blanket and capture heat; the more of these gasses there are, the more heat is trapped (Tremmel & Robinson 26–27). To simplify: when sunlight reaches the Earth, some is absorbed while the rest bounces off into space again. Essentially, the problem presented in modern times is that huge chunks of light are getting stuck on Earth, and too much interaction is bad. • 25. The Environmental Consequences And Effects Of Climate Change Climate change is a serious environmental issue which influences changes in temperature, humidity, air quality, precipitation, and land surface wetness across the globe (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2011). Small changes in these factors can snowball into larger and potentially disastrous outcomes in climate and weather. For example, the 1.5°F increase in the average global temperature during the past century has been accompanied by serious environmental consequences such as an increase in floods, droughts, heavy rainfall, and more frequent and intense heat waves (Environmental Protection Agency [EPA], n.d.). Over the next century, the increase in the Earth's average temperature is predicted to rise by another 0.5 to 8.6°F (EPA, n.d.). The risk for additional severe changes to the Earth's system is projected to increase, as well as the potential harm to the health of the global population (World Health Organization [WHO], 2009). One way through which this is expected to occur is through climate change affecting the indoor environment by creating favorable conditions for the growth of mold, ultimately harming inhabitants' respiratory health (IOM, 2011). According to a report by the Institute of Medicine's Committee on the Effect of Climate Change on Indoor Air Quality and Public Health, climate–change–induced alterations to the outdoor environment are likely to affect the indoor environment, and as a result, the health of its inhabitants (2011). Climate change has increased the frequency and intensity of heavy rainfall and hurricane events, leading to more breakdown of buildings, leaks and infiltration of water into the indoor environment, and flooding (IOM, 2011). The issue of indoor dampness and flooding lies in the creation of favorable conditions for the growth of mold. Moisture level has been shown to be the primary factor responsible for indoor mold growth (IOM, 2011). Exposure to mold is associated with various respiratory symptoms, such as coughing, wheezing, asthma exacerbation, and shortness of breath in vulnerable individuals (IOM, 2011). This combination of climate change and the subsequent increase in mold growth and exposure raises concerns for health, particularly the health of those with existing ... Climate change is an occurrence of a change from patterns in weather which also affects land surfaces and ice sheets in global or regional areas. When climate change occurs, it continues for several decades. Climate change can often occur when there has recently been a volcano, such changes in the patterns of sun radiation or internal variability. During the last century, burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil has increased the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide. This happens because the coal or oil burning process combines carbon with oxygen in the air to make CO2. To a lesser extent, the clearing of land for agriculture, industry, and other human activities has increased concentrations of greenhouse gases. WHAT EFFECT DOES IT HAVE? Climate change can cause many major consequences to the earth and its ways of living including rising seas and increased coastal flooding, longer and more damaging wildfire seasons, more destructive hurricanes etc. etc. With global warming the vegetation with large areas; the earth changes. This leaves animals remaining with reducing the amount of food, for instance, the koala's habitat is in a eucalyptus forest which they feed on the leaves, but if too much carbon dioxide suddenly occurs near the area, it changes the chemical composition leaving the leaves toxic to the koalas which threatens their extinction. On ice, you do not need a very sloped surface before you start to slip or slide and hence, that is what happens with the permafrost and overlying land, resulting in landslides in the North. Also, melting permafrost leads to subsidence, which occurs usually when permafrost thaws/melts and the soil formerly held up by the ice caves in. The most important thing to remember is that following ones instincts and using common sense will result in the survival of anything that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Environmental Changes In Lord Of The Flies People are subject to change their way of life when their environment changes. The novel "Lord of the Flies" is written by William Golding. The novel about a group of british boys who get trapped on an island during a time over. Over the course of time they spend on the island some of the boys go into a savage state of mind. However some had balance between savagery and civilization. Throughout the novel Golding reveals that humans are conditioned by their environment to behave in either moral, or immoral ways. Ralph illustrates that humans personalities can change because of the environment they are in. When Ralph joins one of the tribes dances, his savagery takes over when, " Ralph, carried away by a sudden thick excitement, grabbed Eric's spear and jabbed at Robert with it"(114). This proves that when someone's environment changes so does their personality. It displays that even the kindest of people can succumb to the dark side. However, when the naval officer comes to rescue the boys Ralph began to, " Ralph wept for end of innocence, the darkness of a man's heart..."(202). This reveals that when ... When Ralph goes back to check on Sam and Eric he asks them why they joined Jack's tribe and they said nothing but, " Memory of their new and shameful loyalty came to them. Eric was silent but Sam tried to do his duty"(187). This reveals that even if someone has succumb to savagery when even a little bit of civilization is shown that can change for the better. When the twins are threatened by Jack, the boys immediately give up Ralph's hiding spot, "'You're sure he meant in there'. The twin moaned faintly and then squealed again. 'He meant he'd hide in there'" (192), but then regret it. This proves that when the boys are threatened they give in to what savagery wants. When we realize what we have done we regret it. When our environment changes we can succumb to doing evil ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Environmental And Humanitarian Issue Of Climate Change One of the clearest and foremost environmental and humanitarian issue the world faces today is climate change yet, you would almost not seem to know given the little attention major News Corporations, such as ABC, NBC, FOX, and CBS spend on addressing, or even acknowledging for that matter, the issue. Just last year in 2015, all four of these major networks together spent a grand total of 146 minutes of airtime discussing climate change. To put that into perspective, all four of those major networks together spent less than one percent of one percent of the year talking about climate change, or just over two hours of the year between all four major networks. To make matters worse, not every minute of the time–consuming 146 minutes between all four major news networks that was allot to cover climate change were engaged in any serious discussion about the ramification or future implications it will have on the very near future. There are networks that find it in their best interest (FOX news in particular) to somehow argue against the science of climate change, to argue against the science backed liberal conspiracy that wants to destroy the American homeland (or something as radical as that, I'm not too sure exactly what they [crazy evangelical Christian conservatives] believe in). However, there is a bigger, more serious underlying issue here that is not fully concerned with the media coverage that climate change unfortunately receives. The underlying issue is perhaps why ... • 37. Environmental Consequences Of Climate Change Climate Change is a threat to public health. It affects the social and environmental determinants of health–clean air, safe drinking water, sufficient food and secure shelter. Changes in the greenhouse gas concentrations and other drivers alter the global climate and bring about a myriad of human health consequences. Environmental consequences of climate change, such as extreme heat waves, rising sea–levels, changes in precipitation resulting in flooding and droughts, intense hurricanes, and degraded air quality have direct and indirect impact on the physical, social, and psychological health of humans. Source Impact of Climate Change on Health Global warming is allowing an array of forgotten pathogens to emerge from the thawing permafrost–and possibly reinfect humans. Organic matter like dead animals, moss and plants, long preserved in ice, are now thawing, rotting, and releasing gases that not only spur global warming but create a new breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. Climate change is making heat waves hotter and more frequent which can cause heat exhaustion and heatstroke or worsen pre–existing cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. City residents also face a heightened risk because of warmer temperatures in cities from the urban heat island effect, caused by the mostly paved surfaces that absorb and re–radiate heat and the lack of green spaces and tree cover in these areas. Due to climate change and frequent El Nino, affects the amount of carbon dioxide ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Environmental Health Problems Likely To Be Exacerbated By... 2. Identify a broad range of current environmental health problems likely to be exacerbated by climate change. How might existing public health practices be altered to anticipate these effects of climate change? What other key sectors (beyond health) should be engaged? Current environmental health problems that will likely exacerbate due to climate change include changes in air and water quality, and increase in parasite growth and chemical pollutants. General climate change: cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, hypertensive heart disease, and cancer will raise mortality rates. Heat stress: most effected are the elderly population Air pollution: Photochemical oxidants have adverse effects on human health. Inflammatory eye disease, acute upper respiratory disease, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive ventilator disease, pulmonary emphysema, and bronchial asthma all fall under this category. ... Co–benefits of planting trees to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions include reducing urban heat island effect, reducing local energy demand, improving air quality, and providing an attractive area for physical and social activities. Reducing fossil fuel use in power plants, reduces air pollution. Sustainable community design which includes active transport and transit use, reduces vehicular traffic, and increases physical activity, lessens air pollution, and reduces risk of vehicular injuries and death. Potential unintended consequences include diversion of foods (corn and sugar cane) from human consumption, by creating scarcity and increasing food prices. Humanitarian food aid could dwindle. Conversion of forests to croplands can increase carbon dioxide levels, and threaten ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Climate Change and Environmental Issues Environmental Issues Climate Change Introduction Is global warming due to human activity or not? Is there something societies around the world can do to halt the warming of the planet? What is the key to societies developing a sustainable world and how do environmental dynamics impact sustainability? These questions and others will be addressed from several perspectives in this paper. Is global warming due to human activities? The view of Scientists The most authoritative and objective source of information on climate change (or global warming, as some prefer to use) is the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a group that began researching climate change in 1992. The IPCC was launched by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organizations (WMO) in order to "...provide an objective source of scientific information" (UN.org). It was clear by the middle of the 20th century, the UN explains, that as a "...side effect of the industrial age...human action had significantly increased the production of...carbon dioxide" one of the main greenhouse gases that contributes to global climate change. The IPCC has its next major report due out in 2014, and while the IPCC does publish occasional white paper findings between their major reports, the most recent report is called the Climate Change 2007: Working Group I: The Physical Science Basis. In that report there is a section called "Human and Natural Drivers of Climate Change" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
