job security that teachers can earn after they reach a certain level of professionalism (Scott, 1986).
Once a teacher has earned tenure they are able to maintain an on–going employment contract within
an educational system, as long as they abide by the rules and regulations outlined in their contract.
Many states have created tenure policies to protect competent teachers from malicious accusations,

According to the court case Stoddard v. School District, a teacher was denied renewal of her
teaching contract because of teaching deficiencies (Leagle, 1974). The teacher contested that the
board failed to show how she violated the first or fourteenth amendment, which was her freedom of
speech and the right to have equal protection under the law. The teacher won the case as the board
did not have a constitutional reason to have a non–renewal of her contract (Leagle, 1974).

are allowed to do and say whatever they please, but others are not. Even though the amount of
tenure contracts offered are decreasing, Jeanne Zaino, the author of "Offensive Speech and the
Contingency Clause: Adjuncts who are outspoken are losing their jobs," published on the website
Inside Higher Ed., believes professors and their jobs should still be protected under the First
Amendment. Zaino references back to the story of two professors who publicly stated very
unpopular opinion. They ended up fired due to their public statements. According to Zaino, these
two should have not been fired. On the other hand, the professors should have known better because
they represent a university. These professors knew what the consequences would be after making
their statements. Besides the fact that I disagree with Jeanne Zaino, the essay is fairly written. It is
not perfect due to its poor assumptions of what the reader must already know and believe. Although,
these are key components, the author did a good job by explaining what was currently happening
and showed a decent amount of research to back up their credibility. Zaino did a decent job writing

Amy Bishop was born on February 4, 1968 (Dunlop, 2010), to Sam Bishop and Judy Bishop. They
lived in Iowa City where her father worked on his graduate art work at the University of Iowa.
Bishop was a bright and empathetic girl who loved to play with her toys. The family eventually
moved to Massachusetts where her father got a teaching job. They settled in Braintree in 1968 and
Seth was born later in the year (Keefe, 2013). Amy was an asthmatic and she was sent to the
emergency room often which is what led her to her passion of science. In school Bishop played the
violin and her brother asked if he could play also. The two of them seemed to have a sibling rivalry
