Mead-Hall In Beowulf
The role the mead–hall plays in Anglo–Saxon warrior culture is an important one, for without such a
hall, there is no such basis for a community. The mead–hall offers the security and stability that a
warrior needs after a long day. Likewise, it is also the warrior culture's ultimate vulnerability, "So
times were pleasant for the people there until finally one, a fiend out of hell, began to work his evil
in the world" (p1237). As presented in Beowulf, the mead–hall is the very reason he is given a
chance to prove his extraordinary strength and power due to Grendal sneaking in the great hall at
night to ravenously devour warriors one by one, "So, after nightfall, Grendal set out for the lofty
house...there he came upon them, a company of the best asleep from their feasting, insensible to
pain and human sorrow...he grabbed thirty men from their resting places and rushed to his lair"
(p1238). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many grand feasts and gatherings occur in such a setting, warriors come home to the warm hearth of
the hall of their lord after completing the tasks they were sent out for. They might find mead being
distributed, women about, and perhaps even a young boy turning into a man. A fine example is
given in the book, what Grendal hears from a distance of such a grand Mead–Hall, "It harrowed him
to hear the din of the loud banquet every day in the hall, the harp being struck and the clear song of
a skilled poet telling with mastery of man's beginnings, how the Almighty had made the earth a
gleaming plain girdled with waters"

Christianity And Paganism In Beowulf
In Beowulf the differences between Heorot and Grendel's swamp are personified through setting
descriptions, religious context and Beowulf's heroic traits compared with Grendel's anathematic
characteristics by highlighting the major conflicts between Christianity and Paganism, emphasizing
the contrast of man against monster.
Christian ideas are ingrained in different characters, the glorious and brave Beowulf exemplifies
good Christian values, while Grendel personifies evil in a devil–like character that Christians
associate with Pagans. Grendel is described as a grim demon who haunts the desolate marsh where
due to his anathematic descent, is doomed to live banished among other monsters as part of "Cain's
clan, whom the creator had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Christian belief, the deer is a symbol of spiritual authority and the devotion of God; Heorot hall
stands for these values and contrasts the ghastly characteristics that define Grendel's swamp. In
Beowulf, the contrasting settings of Heorot and Grendel's swamp further develop the main conflict
of Christianity versus Paganism through biblical references, the reflection of Grendel's anathematic
qualities on his swamp, and Heorot hall encompassing the purity of heaven.
The contrast between man and monster facilitates this religious conflict as well as conveys the
message that all good things can die in the hands of evil; Beowulf upholds the Christian ideals,
while Grendel dies away representing the fall of the Pagans. In contrast to the beauty and success of
the great Heorot hall, the swamp is full of damned, evil creatures, "The water was infested/ with all
kinds of reptiles. There were writhing sea–dragons/ and monsters slouching on slopes by the cliff, /
serpents and wild things such as those that often/surface at dawn to roam the sail–road/and doom the
voyage. Down they plunged, / lashing in anger at the loud call/ of the battle–bugle" (1425–1429).
The swamp is infested with many wild beasts, by nature bloodthirsty and murderous, just like
Grendel who becomes a monster through adopting sinful actions and bringing honorable men to
their doom. These anathematic savages confirm that only godless creatures can dwell in Grendel's
swamp depicting hell, and

Life Of My Life Essay
I was born in a small village on a cold and stormy night, which started the anger that I still carry
today. I grew up fast in my life and was soon an outcast to society. Kids picked on me, older people
looked down on me, I was unable to fit in anywhere in society. I tried to be nice to others, but they
were never nice to me. My mom was the only one who truly liked me. My Dad left me after I was
born and he grew to hate me also. It is always cold where I live so I believe that the coldness has
affected the hearts of everyone I try and get close to.
As I grew into my older teens I tried to get jobs around town. This is when I started to see the town,
turn against me, no one wanted to hire me. This made me grow angry and soon I started to develop
anger issues. When I finally turned 20, this old man seemed to take pity on me, he gave me a job
working in his brick yard. I really liked the job, but the people who I worked with seemed to turn a
blind eye to me. I soon learned to ignore this and mind my own business. As time went on the other
workers would sing together at a very loud tone, it started to affect my ears and my concentration.
After five months in the Brickyard there was a loud bang, so loud it could be heard across all the
realms. My ears began to ring with a violent high pitched ring, soon this ring drove me into
smashing my own head into the ground trying to make it stop. After this event, all the workers
thought I was crazy and tried to beat me. I ran away for my

Gregory Bateson and his Quest to Unify our Minds
Introduction: Thesis and introduce good old Gregory...1/2 page Gregory Bateson was an
anthropologist, psychoanalyst, and cybernetics who contributed to multiple subfields within
anthropology along with other fields in the social sciences. Bateson never completely settled into
one field, but rather, he synthesized his knowledge to incorporate it into his epistemology and
methodologies. Gregory Bateson's contributions to anthropology range from providing new methods
of ethnography, helping to establish the field of visual anthropology, influencing ecological,
psychological, and linguistics anthropology, to moving cybernetic theory from the natural sciences
to the social sciences.
Background, Education, and Influences: 1 to 2 pages Gregory Bateson was born in Grantchester,
England to an aristocratic family in 1904 (Stagoll 2006). His father, William Bateson, was a
prominent geneticist who founded the Cambridge School of Genetics and coined the term "genetics
(Stagoll 2006)." William Bateson was a strong advocate of the work of geneticist Gregor Mendel
and named Gregory in his honor (Stagoll 2006). Following in his father's footsteps, Gregory
Bateson received his bachelor's degree in natural sciences at St. Johns at Cambridge where his
grandfather, William Henry Bateson, held the position of master (Levy and Rappaport 1982). After

Walter Mead Isolationism
According to historians there are a multitude of misconceptions surrounding Americas foreign
policy in its earliest days. Perhaps the biggest one being the misunderstanding that is, America was
an isolationist country at it's founding. With that being said, how have historians assessed whether
or not the United States was an isolationist country from its founding through 1815? This question is
best answered by looking at the United States diplomatic interactions with other countries, and its
unbeknownst cultural affinity with Britain. Once we look at these two things its rather difficult to
say America was an isolationist country from its founding through 1815. To start, it's imperative to
understand the meaning of the word "isolationist" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mead states the first treaty America signed in 1778, which was a military alliance with France goes
directly against isolationist tendencies. This also erodes Kaplan's point of the U.S. not forming
alliances with other countries. Furthermore Mead essentially says from 1778–1793 the United States
is beholden to assist France in any foreign conflict they are involved in. However France hadn't
engaged in war until 1793, which was when the United States signed the proclamation of neutrality
proclaiming neutral in the war between Britain and France. Mead argues George Washington didn't
sign this because he wanted America to be an isolationist country, but he signed it because America
was so new of a country Washington didn't want to fight a messy European war that could
eventually lead to Americas demise. Additionally Mead states, Washington signed the proclamation
so the United States could maintain its sovereign independence, and that it had absolutely nothing to
do with attempting to be an isolationist state. Furthermore Mead argues that only thirteen years after
the United States constitution was ratified, they had participated in their first foreign war. This was
when the U.S. allied with Sweden in the Tripolitan War against the North African Barbary States.
Mead follows this up by pointing to the quote said by one of the United States founding fathers
Thomas Paine. After they won the Tripolitan War. Paine says, "The cause of America is in a great
measure the cause of all mankind." Mead essentially states that Paine's quote expressed to the
people that the United States was willing to do everything in their power, including foreign
intervention to prescribe the rest of the world human liberties, and the right to self government that
were staples in America at the current time. Finally Mead points to the war of 1812 when the United

American anthropologist Margaret Mead was a born leader, skillful writer, powerful teacher and
brilliant environmentalist. She paved the way for a greater understanding of humanity. Her desire to
learn stemmed mostly for her desire to both teach and reach people. As an anthropologist who
studied amongst some of the finest, her acute attention to her surroundings and desire to learn the
finest details made a significant impact not only in her field but in the lives of those that she studied
and in turn taught. Mead's connection to both humans and the Earth we inhabit enhanced her
understanding of just how unique we are and yet, very much the same. Mead's unique desire to learn
the intricate details in lives not only influenced a generation but caused great controversy in it's
wake. In her own words, "Always remember that you are absolutely unique, just like everyone else,"
and unique she was, but somehow, she was not, 'just like anyone else.' Margaret Mead from the
beginning had a peaked interest in the intricate details of others' lives. These desires stemmed from
what I believe to be her own desire to find out who she in fact was herself. Her exploration to other
lands, was not only to find out how different people were from her, but how very much they were
the same. Mead's forward–thinking mind has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Simmel And Mead: Quote Explanation
Duran, Clarisia SOC 368 Take Home Final Essay Set A: Simmel and Mead Quote Explanation
Simmel's quote notes that our greatest struggles are derived from our pursuit to uphold our
personalities. He states it becomes tough to preserve our own individuality and autonomy in an
environment that demands the individual to fit in with one culture or idea. Trying to assimilate into
these demands will be the lost existence of the individual. Simmel explains that having autonomy
within a society with such demands that determine your survival is dangerous because the individual
will not be validated and considered part of such society. Thus it forces them to conform and focus
on economic gain. Through this, the individual becomes more one–sided or one–dimensional and
ignores extracurricular activities that could possibly enrich their lives. This exposes one central
concept for Simmel, dualism. Dualism it's the tension between opposites and the interdependence
between the individual and society. Quote Example For example conflict separates people but
conflict can also be understood as a form of intimacy and interaction. So conflict involves the inner
penetration of opposites. This energy that emotion is investing in the conflict is a type of interaction.
This example reflects dualism. Quote in Reference to Alexander's model ... Show more content on

Simmel speak of tragedy of culture where "objective culture" the product of of human creativity
comes to dominate individual will or "subjective culture". These two thinkers speak about the
problem of alienation from two very different perspectives. Marx's vision was that creating a
construction of a totally new humanity, free of alienation, on the ruins of the existent one. Simmel
was more concerned for individualistic values. Simmel is then more "micro" and Marx more

Margaret Mead (1901–1978)
Margaret Mead was born on Monday, December 16, 1901, at the West Park Hospital in
Philadelphia, P.A. Margaret was the first baby to be born in this hospital, and because of this, she
felt different from the rest of the children, because they had all been born at home.
Margaret’s parents were from the midwest, and because of their professions, the family
moved quite a bit living in such places as Hampton, New Jersey; Greenwich Village in New York
City, and St. Marks Square in Philadelphia. Because she moved so much as a child, Margaret had
been subjected to many different styles of living, and therefore had a growing desire to learn more

Comparison Essay Beowulf
In beowulf there are three major battles that Beowulf participate in. The first battle is the battle
against grendel which is then followed up by the battle against Grendel's mother, and then finally
the last battle takes place against the Dragon. In all three of these battles Beowulf shows great
courage and manages to defeat all of these monsters. Although beowulf was able to defeat these
three monsters they were different in some ways but also had some similarities. The first battle takes
place against Grendel. Grendel is a demon who descended from Cain. He is a very evil monster who
kills many people before beowulf hears about what has taken place. When he finds out beowulf
travels to the town to put an end to this monster. He waits in the mead hall for Grendel to strike
again. At first no one believes that beowulf was strong enough but in fact he was. Unlike when
beowulf was fighting grendel's mom, beowulf puts aside his armor and sword to fight with just his
hands. Grendel proves to be no match for beowulf as he easily defeats the the monster. This is where
the first two fights different from one another. In the first fight beowulf for the most part easily
defeats grendel but when grendel's mother finds out and seeks revenge beowulf has to put up a
much harder fight because grendel's mother is much stronger ... Show more content on

The first major difference is that the dragon has no relation to grendel and grendel's mother whereas
they did. The fight with the dragon also occurs much later whereas the fight with grendel and his
mom happened within days of each other. These differences were major but not the biggest and
most dramatic difference between the three. In the other two stories beowulf shows confidence that
he will prevail without dying. In the third story beowulf prepares to die in battle. He knows that the
dragon is the strongest of all three of the monsters and knows that he will not make it

According To Mead Generalized Order
Generalized order is an organized community or group which an individual belongs to. These are
attitudes that one would assume is common for the whole group. Additionally, if we can assume the
attitude of the generalized other, we are capable of forming abstract values and principals regarding
freedom, equal rights, and fairness. For Mead, generalized order clearly demonstrated the
relationship between society and self. Therefore, in order to be ourselves, it is essential to become in
a community of attitudes that control the attitudes of all members. In doing so, individuals can
create effective organizations and activities. According to Mead, the language process is vital in
regards to the development of the "self." The term "communication"

Brothers Drake Meadery
Overview
For our Gemba paper, we choose to take an inside look at how Brothers Drake Meadery, an urban
producer of wines made from honey, produces meads and creates its local business. In order to put
forward useful suggestions from a better understanding about the production process, we visited
Brothers Drake Meadery located on 26 E 5th Ave. Brothers Drake Meadery's business contains
meadery, bar, event space for rent, and venue for live music event.
As a popular wine among tourists and wine–lovers in Columbus, mead not only uses local
ingredients and supplies for brewing, but also is only distributed locally. Mead is that uses. Using

Mr. Meadery has great passion for mead; as a matter of fact, he sees the recipe generation part as the
most important part of his business. It is indeed this unique, innovative process that supports his
business; however, it is undeniable that there are some problems generating from this process.
On the one hand, the random new recipe testing schedule wastes lots of time, and sometimes makes
it fail to meet customer demand on time. The production process is relatively standard, which asks
for a long time for brewing and aging. However, once staffs start to produce new mead, they can
only make one flavor at a time in the whole metal container.
On the other hand, all labor forces are assigned to keep producing the mead due to Mr. Meadery's
focus on increasing the utilization of existing equipment. However, the bottling is quite a labor–
intensive process that will cost lots of money to employ more labors.
Besides, stores that sell their bottled mead do not have good sales plan, which makes Brothers
Drake Meadery fail to track the sales of each flavor and make better plans for next production.

Who Is Hrothgar's Loyalty In Beowulf
Men seem to be happy when they drink mead, or liquor. It's obvious what goes on inside the mead–
hall. Men conversing and laughing while they pour themselves another cup of mead. . The beauty of
the land that Hrothgar and his warriors live on makes them happy.
"Loud in that hall, the harp's rejoicing
Call and the poet's clear songs, sung
Of the ancient beginnings of us all, recalling
The Almighty making the earth, shaping
These beautiful plains marked off by oceans,
Then proudly setting the sun and moon
To glow across the land and light it;
And leaves, made quick with life, with each
Of the nations who now move on its face. And then
As now warriors sang of their pleasure:
So Hrothgar's men lived happy in his hall
Till the monster stirred..." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Basically, it's like Hrothgar and his warriors are angels and Grendel is a demon. Angels and demons
have completely opposite characteristics which is why Grendel is angered by the warriors singing
happily and enjoying life.
Grendel keeps attacking Hrothgar's warriors because like the devil, he wants to weaken their faith in
God. As a result, Hrothgar and his warriors pray to God to get rid of Grendel and keep them safe.
They don't keep that faith through the attacks though. Hrothgar and his warriors start to become
weak because they feel like their prayers aren't doing anything but causing more deaths. When
Grendel can see that change he likes it. He knows that he has weakened Hrothgar and his warriors
so he keeps attacking to finish the deed.
Beowulf is a man that you do not want to mess with. He is wise, bold, and strong–minded. If you

Mead Halls In Beowulf
In Beowulf, many parts of the story have realistic and true qualities, one of those qualities is the
quality of how and where they lived. In the pre–medieval era, mead halls were commonplace in the
European continent, now they are a thing of the past. Mead halls were very important in ancient
times. Lords ruled from them, and enemies would to try to loot from them. Mead halls in the Anglo–
Saxon culture were used for many reasons, among them, bragging rights. Mead halls conveyed a
message of power and strength that are still heard today, not by the factions and kingdoms
themselves, but by the written documents and accounts recorded by Christian monks and scholars of
the past. Mead halls were very important in ancient times. Mead halls served as homes for the more
powerful nobles, their families, and quite possibly their soldiers. Mead halls served as the
government building for each settlement, and was seen as the seat of power for the lord who

His plan was to bring victory back to Herot and defeat the monstrous Grendel. Many people have
seen Beowulf's strengths and he is the best choice for this battle. In his past victories, he had chased
five great giants who were tangled up in chains from the earth, he swims in the darkness of night,
searching for monsters and driving them out of the ocean to be victorious in killing them all. This
battle was Beowulf's calling to defeat Grendel and he wasn't planning on giving up until his goal
was achieved. On the night that Beowulf arrived Beowulf awaited for the return of Grendel while
we were nowhere near the premises. Grendel departed from his lair traveling to Herot with the
intention of feasting on human flesh of my men not knowing what he would be encountering.
Grendel set his attention to the first Geat he laid eyes on ripping him to shreds. Beowulf was in
Grendel's path of destruction when Grendel finally reached him. The rest of Beowulf's men sprang
up from the ground ready to protect Beowulf from what was about to happen. Infact, Beowulf did
not need any protection. Beowulf then grasped onto Grendel's arm never letting go, using all his
might to defeat Grendel and never losing hope. Moments later, Grendel was suffering in desperation
to flee. Grendel knew that there was no hope in overcoming Beowulf's strength. As a symbol of
triumph Grendel's arm, claw, and shoulder are now hanging high in the mead hall for everyone to

investigation is continually increasing our knowledge. But if we are to make good use of this

opinions throughout the essay, thus pulling the reader in by relating back to childhood memories.
The entire essay seeks to define the word superstition and how it relates to knowledge. Mead
connects with the reader by giving examples, by relating to superstitions to a toy a child holds at
bedtime. Mead notes "Transitional objects; that is objects that help the child move back and forth
between exactions of everyday life and the world of wish and dream." (175). The author used
classification/division to separate the different meanings of the word superstition. Mead states "In

There are many strengths and weaknesses with Margaret mead's field work study research that was

field research that were exemplified in this film. The objective of Margaret mead's field examine

Mead Hall In Beowulf Essay
In Anglo–Saxon culture, the role of mead hall plays a big part. It began as a place for people to
come together and gather in early Europe. These halls are an important part in housing the kings and
queens, while they managed day to day events. Different ancient peoples had given traditions of the
mead–hall to England, such as the Saxons and Angles. The Lords brought together their people to
drink, gloat of their accomplishments, and make oaths to be at the service of their king. They would
drink beer, mead, ciders, and ale, which had been plentiful for a day or so.
In Beowulf, the mead hall was called Heorot that belonged to King Hrothgar. He was the ruler of the
Danes and lord of a town in early Denmark. It is the main setting where the tale of Beowulf had
taken place. This hall is a figure of power and wealth. In mead halls, the kings display all their
riches such a jewels, money, gold, armour, and the amount of followers they had. As people feast
and party in the hall, it is also a holding place where warriors could sleep and spend the night. In
Beowulf, Heorot is the location where many tragedies and victories happened. Many people died

very proud of all the treasures he has, to show off how wealthy he is. Not only the king would do
this everybody would have a status of how they lived with their wealth. The king would reward his
servants and warriors loyalty with a gift of treasure, which can ensure the trust of the king. In

Research Paper On Beowulf
The story Beowulf is about a man named Beowulf killing evil beast named Grendel. Grendel had
hunted Hrothgar's kingdom for twelve years. Beowulf killed Grendel with his bare hands. They

someone found out about Grendel's death. She ran out of the swamp and went to Denmark to go
hunt the warriors for what happens to Grendel.
A king named Hrothgar built a mead– hall for the warriors to drink, and give gifts to the Lord. One
day, the warriors were singing about the Lord and a monster named Grendel had enough of the
singing. Grendel hated the Lord because he made so many sins, he got shunned from the Lord. He

Examples Of Stereotyping In Grendel
In chapter four, Grendel brings a corpse to the mead hall and attempts to shows his sympathy to the
dead man by saying, " 'Mercy! Peace!'" (Gardner 51). He also said, "'Friend! Friend!'" (Gardner 52),
he tries to be friends with human by showing his sorrow. However, people in the meadhall think that
Grendel kills the man and he brings to the corpse to show off his strength and warns mankind to
stay away, people sees Grendel as a threat to them. People misunderstand Grendel's because of
Grendel's appearance, Grendel looks like a monster, and monster is always evil and violent in
human's perspective, they judge solely base on one's appearance, thus they are stereotyping Grendel.
Stereotyping is a very common phenomenon in today society, people tend to impose everything that
they acknowledged about a specific kind of people on to every one of them, we categorized people
by their skin colors, sex, religions, cultural background, etc. I have seen a lot of examples of
stereotyping in school community, when people say, "That's so Asian" when they see people have
kimchi or chow–mein for lunch; when boys think girls are not strong enough to play soccer; and
when people think blonde is stupid than the others. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Margaret Mead Warfare
In Margaret Mead's "Warfare: An Invention – Not a Biological Necessity" we see her ideas
surrounding the relationship between biological and cultural influences on an aspect of life and
society. Mead's ideas play off of some of the thoughts mentioned in Ruth Benedict's "The Individual
and the Pattern of Culture". Benedict mentions how there "...is always a give and take,"(114) that is
between culture and the individual. Which can be related to Mead's mention of how war or fighting
is dependant on a culture's need for that kind of outlet. Because Mead was a student of Benedict's
when she was a professor at Columbia University(112) it becomes evident how some of the
similarities in their ideas had developed.
Although Mead's essay is quite specific to the concept of warfare, it is possible to dissect the essay
and find the underlying ideas she has regarding culture. Mead states that "A people can use only the
forms it has,"(503) meaning that a group or individual only uses the ideas or ways of life that have
been shown or passed down to them, that they wouldn't use a concept that they had not learned. This
idea helps to explain why what one culture deems as normal, another one doesn't understand ...

The Death And Life Of Great American Cities
The Death and Life of Great American Cities––––The conditions for city diversity
Jane Jacobs
An illustrated report
Background
The death and life of great American cities was published in 1961. It was like an earthquake when it
first appeared in the field of urban planning. At that time, the main stream of planning circle in
America critiqued the book that it brought nothing but troubles to the field of urban planning.
However, as time went by, the contents of the book have been increasingly accepted by a majority
of scholars of urban planning.
The book's author, Jane Jacobs, was an American–Canadian journalist, writer and activist, whose
husband was an architect. She had no degree in urban planning, but during the time of reporting the

Introduction
Criticizing contemporary urban policies that ignored the needs of most city–dwellers and destroyed
the nature of cities, Jane Jacobs (1961) wrote four parts in this book, which respectively are "the
peculiar nature of cities", "the conditions for city diversity", "forces of decline and regeneration"
and "different tactics". Among four parts, the part of "the conditions for city diversity" has the most
far–reaching influence, and it is also the most important thought in the book. Thus this report is
mainly concerning the illustration of this part. I will give not only the demonstration of what Jane
Jacobs says about, but also my opinion on this chapter with examples.
Four dispensable conditions to generate city diversity
1 Mixed primary uses
"The district, and indeed as many of its internal parts as possible, must serve more than one primary
function; preferably more than two"
2 Short blocks
" Most blocks must be short; that is, streets and opportunities to turn corners must be frequent."
3 Diverse buildings varying in condition and age
"The district must mingle buildings that vary in age and condition, including a good proportion of
old ones so that they vary in the economic yield they must produce. This mingling must be fairly
close–grained."
4 A dense concentration of people
" There must be a sufficiently dense concentration of people, for whatever purposes they may be

Monsters And Men In Beowulf
Of Monsters and Men
There is a repletion of themes throughout the story of Beowulf. Firstly, this is seen with Grendel and
his killing of King Hrothgar's men. Next this theme is seen with Grendel's mother killing King
Hrothgar's most trusted advisor. And finally, this is seen with Beowulf killing the dragon for
attacking his kingdom and burning down his house.
After a brief prologue Beowulf begins with the great mead hall Heorot, the throne hall of King
Hrothgar, being attacked by the monster Grendel. Grendel is jealous and annoyed by the noise of
celebrations in Heorot. "It harrowed him To hear the din of the loud banquet Every day in the hall,
the harp being struck" The attacks are also due to Grendel's nature as a descendent of the original ...

him into a rage, As the people of that country would soon discover." On one of these burnings,
Beowulf's own home was burned down. It was the throne hall of the Geats that the dragon torched
and for this insult and the injuries of his people, Beowulf would slay the dragon. Beowulf foolishly
chose just a few warriors to accompany him to the barrow of the dragon instead a large army.
During Beowulf's battle with the dragon the third blow he landed did not kill the beast but did
enrage it. At this insult the dragon bit into the neck of Beowulf envenomating him. So, the dragon
again sought revenge against humans. The dragon bit Beowulf for Beowulf striking him and
because he rightly assumed that people would steal his treasure away from him. For fear of theft and
death the dragon did kill Beowulf. After each blow from Beowulf the dragon would belch out more
flame. This shows an extension of the cycle of revenge on an individual level. The dragon would

Comparing Beowulf And Grendel's Mother
Beowulf is the story of a great Geat warrior who slays beasts and has untold strength. In Beowulf
there are three battles between our hero Beowulf and Grendel, Grendel's Mother, and a dragon. With
each battle he fights stronger monsters, and has to show more strength. He brings with him more
equipment with each encounter, and travels farther for every monster as well. The first monster
Grendel was attacking some people in the mead–hall of Heorot. As Beowulf receives word of this
he immediately leaves his people, the Geats, and takes nothing along with him. It is important to
note that he brings nothing because it shows his true strength, which was described as strong as
thirty men in each hand. Gendel is described as "very terrible to look

The Pedestrian By Leonard Mead
The Light in the Dark In any given situation, individuals experience conflicts when pursuing a
personal desire as particular desires do not conform to the rules that societies standardize for
individuals. Individuals quickly adapt to the modernization of the advancement of humanity and
technology. Nevertheless, there may be a controversy deciding between obeying society's
regulations of consistently keeping up with the innovative contemporary behaviour or sticking with
subjective or independent aspirations. In the short story The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury, Leonard
Mead's complication between pursuing his personal desire and choosing to conform creates an issue
with the development as an individual. Symbols within the story that further highlighted the distinct
difference between personal desires and deciding to conform include Mr. Mead's shoes, television,
and the houses. Moreover, each symbol that was stated demonstrates a diverse idiosyncratic
characteristic about the protagonist as does the psychological components of Mr. Mead such as
word choice, speech, behaviour and mental processes. However, throughout the story, the
protagonist, Mr. Leonard Mead is exemplified through a third person limitedpoint of view as it
gradually illuminates the understanding that society's need for conformation and an individual's
needs may produce a consequential disagreement of discrepancy. Ray Bradbury's short story suggest
that conflicts between pursuing a personal desire and

The Benefits Of Lake Mead
Lake Mead, the largest man made reservoir, 32 miles from Vegas has been dropping water levels at
an alarming rate. In ten more years with no change in attitude, the city will dry out along with the
lake. Satellite views of the city and the lake show a negative correlation between the lake and the
city. As the city grows, the lake shrinks. Unless somebody can explain to me why we need grass and
pine trees in the desert, I propose we remove all this unnecessary shrubbery and learn to appreciate
what nature naturally grows here. Our city continues to expand outward with beautiful houses, and
equally beautiful yards. However in order to reduce our water use there should be a new policy to
have more native plants. Once we control what we add onto

Mead On Materialism
According to a sociologist George Herbert Mead, "I" is one's sense of agency, action or power,
while "me" is a learned self as perceived as an object by the "I". With that definition in mind, it must
be recognized that the clone, whom I acknowledge with pronoun "she", may be "Sunghye Ji" all
while not being "me". Even if I was copied to the very last electron, I would not view her life– as in
the period of existence– as my own, since the consciousness that is writing this essay, or at least
struggling to, would not be present in the clone. Since I cannot reflect on the behaviors and
emotions of the clone through introspection, the clone holds a different identity. She could easily

As multifaceted the word is, there have been ad nauseum amount of arguments regarding what it is
and how it relates to the physical (arguable by idealism) body. This age–old topic of discussion have
presented to the public few theories and among them is materialism. Materialism, closely related to
physicalism, states that mind equals the brain; Everything can be fully explained by how the brain
functions. Materialism is associated with reductionism in that the theory simplifies the concept of
mind to neurophysiological terms. Thomas Nagel critiques this notion in his essay "What Is It Like
To Be a Bat?" (1974). Although he himself believes in materialism, Nagel denies that it was the
absolute solution to the mind–body problem. He argues that materialist theories of mind omit the
essential component: what it is like for an organism to be it. The subjective character of conscious
experience can not be understood by anyone outside of the beholder of the consciousness and
therefore undermines reductionists' effort to explain consciousness objectively. Accordingly, Nagel
concludes that is the limit of imagination. The clone and I will have exactly the same brain that has
encoded my entire life up to that point. Nevertheless, expecting to "read her mind" or speak
verbatim on her behalf would be unrealistic. My ability to understand my duplicate is restricted to

Mead Hall In Beowulf Essay
INTRODUCTION
A Lots of great ideas are born and destroyed in a bar or tavern, leaving you to wonder how different
our whole outlook and way of life would be if we did all our major planning and decision making
there.
B This concept is interesting because of how the Anglo–Saxon warrior culture in the story Beowulf
that was translated by Burton Raffel, actually uses the mead hall as their main political and party
house.
C Would this be better than what we do today with separating the work from the play? Or was it just
a thing of the times.
D The Anglo–Saxon warrior culture mead hall represents the clearest definition of equality you
could ever think of. Under one roof the decisions by the king are told to the people while a giant

provide protection for the people as they work for him.
G And this form of trade off is brought up when Beowulf shows up in the famed mead hall.
"Hrothgar replied, protector of the Danes:" (456).
H as Hrothgar is referred to as the "protector" it shows that he's not just governing the people in
from his castle, he's interacting with them.

Lots of trust and understanding is lost.
J Having the great mead hall creates unity also, by bringing the king and his people closer together
more of the people's problems become the king's and visa versa.
K So when Grendel comes around and starts killing off the people, instead of the king pushing it off
he has to deal with it first and foremost. "My tongue grows heavy, and my heart, when i try and tell

The Statement By Margaret Mead
Thesis
The video provided for this assignment supports the statement by Margaret Mead due to its
illustration of small groups of people making changes. One individual can make a difference, a good
example of this was Madalyn Murray O'Hair who petitioned to get prayer taken out of public
schools arguing that separation of church and state should be upheld. A single person can make a
difference, many people with the same goals and views have a more powerful voice and are
empowered to pursue bigger change despite whatever obstacles they face. From the smallest
community in the neighborhood where people grew up to the President of the United States of
America, anyone can make a change if they determine in their heart to never give up working to
obtain positive change.
Change is the one constant in life that always remains throughout time. Throughout life, change
occurs from birth until death. Human beings can and have pursued changes in their communities,
governments, even their nation as a collective force by joining others with similar motivations and
goals as themselves. Inequality in life, an ideal that people hold when being oppressed, can spark
movements such as civil rights, equal pay, educational rights for all and women's rights to choose
what happens to their own bodies. This can grow into organizations that we know today that still
fight for civil rights for all, among other organizations fighting for common interests of select
groups.

Grendel: The Creation of a Monster
Grendel is a monster. Although it's not exactly "ethical" to judge one by their appearance, and as
shown in other stories such as Frankenstein, one knows a monster when they see one. Grendel has
trouble finding his place in the world, because he doesn't feel different than the humans; however
they see him as different. Throughout the story Grendel cycles through a variety of beliefs in an
attempt to discover who he really is.
Growing up, Grendel had to assemble his own beliefs. After the meeting with the ram, he felt that he
was alone in the world. Grendel knew he was different than people, stating that "if [he] suddenly
showed his face they'd shriek". This shows that Grendel is aware that he is different however deep

This all changes when he first hears the shapers song. At this moment, Grendel feels something and
further questions himself, wondering if he is truly alone in the world, or if there may be something
more. This is the first sense of religion to enter Grendel's life. As the shaper tells of "a battle of good
against evil", Grendel realizes that he is the evil one, and he feels remorse. He "bawls". Grendel
makes himself known after this song by shouting "Mercy! Peace!" this was his plea for acceptance
by the people. However the drunken villagers only see Grendel for the beast he is, and ignore the
plea. The humans react in fear. They are not able to understand Grendel's language and they only
hear uproar. It is at this point in Grendel's life where he begins to understand his place in society.
Grendel continues to listen to the shapers song and is frustrated by how conflicting his reality is to
the feeling he gets from the shapers song.
Grendel needs direction to truly discover his place. After meeting with the dragon, Grendel's
perspective is changed. Although previously Grendel had felt above humans, he had still been equal
in a sense to them, being that he was mortal. Now Grendel was invulnerable to the humans. When
Grendel is attacked by humans, he "feels nothing". After the dragon charmed Grendel, he became a
monster. Grendel is now displaying existentialism towards the people. Feeling that he is above
everyone, and

Example Of Heroism In Beowulf
Question four
Beowulf is determined as a hero in my eyes, throughout the brave and heroic attributes that he had
undertaken within this poem. When defining a hero in our first week of class, we had come up with
the idea that a hero is someone who is: selfless, has strength, sacrifices everything that they have for
the greater good and shows confidence. Beowulf has shown all of these attributes beginning with
being selfless. Beowulf came to the Danes because he knew that he needed to not only keep his
kingdom safe, but surrounding kingdoms. Beowulf's heroism was defined on these next couple of
lines. On line 193, "There was no one else like him alive. In his day, he was the mightiest man on
earth, high–born and powerful. He ordered a boat that would ply the waves. He announced his plan"
(Heaney, 15, 193–196). Beowulf knew the dangers that fighting this demon could bring, but he
sacrificed everything he had. If Beowulf would have lost the battle, his Kingdom (Geats) would
have been left with nothing and Hrothgars kingdom would still be under attack. Beowulf also shows
his strength throughout the poem. When Beowulf arrives at the Danes, he shows no fear. Beowulf
speaks with Hrothgar to learn what is true about his threat. Beowulf speaks giving the Danes much
hope, line 294 " whatever it is, this danger abroad in the dark nights, I come to proffer my
wholehearted help and counsel" (Heaney, 21, 294–298). Beowulf is a hero and a leader, even if we
look at him within modern times. Beowulf shows cause and reason to why he is at the Danes, he
creates leadership upon his men and he has shown devotion towards this cause of wanting to defeat
Grendal the demon in the poem. Every move Beowulf takes in this poem is what I believe we would
want in the modern times of war. We want a leader that will be able to take charge and follow
through with the actions they speak upon. In modern time, we also want a leader that protects our
land and has their best opinion out for their Country. We want a leader like Beowulf. There is times
that as a reader one could think that he is only completing these heroic attributes to uphold his
overall reputation of himself, but isn't that everyone's main goal when completing a monumental
task?

Utopia Vs Privatization Essay
Even though mobility, utopias and privatization have many similarities, do they work together in
urban space? When I first read the words I thought that they have a lot in common so they must all
interact. Once I thought about the words individually I realized that they have some ideas that could
also clash despite the fact that they do all have connections. To decide these connections we must
understand what mobility, utopia and privatization is first.
Mobility is a huge part of the culture in the United States. It is defined as the ability to move freely
and easily. This idea of mobility started with the very first immigrants. We clearly have immigrants
from all over the world, in fact, by 2006 it was estimated that 12 percent of the U.S. ... Show more

In class, we talked about three utopian ideas that were actually put into action in a few cities. The
first is the city beautiful movement. The design is just like the name makes it sounds; the idea that
everything in the city will be designed with beauty in mind. This meant that it would reflect the
rebirth of the United States through confidence and class of mostly prominent, architectchally sound
buildings. A real example is Central Park in New York City. Despite the rapidly changing population
of New York, this design is clearly thriving. The next utopian idea was from Le Corbusier called the
Radiant City. His idea stemmed from changing the polluted industrial city into a clean one. He
wanted to do this by making taller buildings where large amounts of people would reside to ensure
for more green space. One can see a city that reflects this design idea in Brasilla. The last utopian
idea is called the garden city by Ebenezer Howard and was implemented in Greenbelt, Maryland for
one example. The garden city utopia is designed in concentric rings with a mix between a country
and a city feel. Howard thought if the city had both the country and the city feel that everyone
would want to live

Mead Hall In Beowulf
The mead hall was a major factor in the Anglo–Saxon culture. As the two tribes, Angles and Saxons

as a culture when they gathered there. It acted as a safe–haven for them to gather and celebrate,
drink, and talk. Scops would assemble a group of men and women to apprise them of epic tales.
While other times, the mead hall was used for celebrating their victories. Warriors often celebrated

and accomplishments. The queen, Wealhtheow, bestows Beowulf with the golden cup along with a

treasure chest as an act of gratitude. In their culture, gold represents honor and most would do
anything for it. Gold is represented and displayed in Beowulf on the skin of Grendel, Grendel's
mother, and the dragon. It is also incorporated in the treasures. The dragon guards it his entire life,
and it is the mission of many, including Beowulf to slay the dragon to get the treasures he is
protecting. The moments before Beowulf dies, he asks Wiglaf to get him some of the dragon's gold
so that his last sight could be what he was fighting for. Treasures were also placed on Beowulf's
funeral pyre. Grendel's arm and the sword was another treasure that Beowulf earned. Because
Beowulf killed Grendel by ripping off his arm, Beowulf hung the arm to show and display in Heorot
Hall; the sword was his weapon that he took to try to defeat Grendel's mother. Grendel's arm
showed his bravery and loyalty to his lord and his men. He showed by example to his men that it
takes courage and honor to fight for your life for what you believe is right. When scops tell the story
of Beowulf, it is an honor to him for the community to hear in the mead hall. The characters and

Summary Of Margaret Mead's Coming Of Age In Samoa
Margaret Mead was first to major in psychology at Bernard but later went on to Colombia and
received a doctorate studying with Franz Boas and Ruth Benedict. To her Anthropology was a big
commitment to learn and study new human behaviors. In her book Coming Of Age In Samoa she
argued the children now a days in a modern society are forced to fit education in their lives rather
than "inflexible education mould". Her main goal was to study the lives and behavior changes from
a new born to a young adult. Although she could have done her research in Modern society she
wanted to get a different aspect of behaviors on minds that where not corrupted. Her research was
aiming towards a different type of culture, a culture that education was not the focus but more based
on home standards and values. In her book Coming of Age In Samoa she describes the social facts
and gives a thick description based on research done on "simple people", theories that made her
book a best seller.
In Meads intro to the book she explains the research they are trying to conduct and how it cannot be
done in a modern world country. She explains they have no control over to what the child has been
exposed to that every research they would conduct would result in a different outcome. To solve this
dilemma, she decided to target her studies to "simple people, primitive peoples, whose society has
never attained the complexity of our own." (pg. 7 paragraph 2). Therefore in 1925 Margaret Mead
went out on her first

Analysis Of Robert Flaherty 's Famous Work Nanook Of The...
The challenge of accurately representing ethnography, the critical analysis and systematic inspection
of everyday life across cultures, has been repeatedly attempted with myriad intentions and has
subsequently evolved over time. This paper will examine four iconic anthropological filmmakers in
the mid–twentieth century in their individual distinctive endeavors to contribute to and accomplish
this goal of developing ethnographic film. From Robert Flaherty 's objective to showcase culture as
art, to Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson's intent to produce a purely unbiased and scientific
cinematic record, to John Marshall's desire to present works which would engage audiences
politically, one can trace the evolving narrative of ethnographic film itself, climaxing in the ultimate
quest for reflexivity. Robert Flaherty's famous work Nanook of the North (1922) artistically depicts
the life of Nanook, a fictional Inuk man in the Arctic. Throughout what became known as the
pioneering "documentary" of its field, the film follows Nanook's family in their day–to–day tasks.
With no dialogue, a dramatic score ever–presently serves as narration throughout the staged scenes
of trading, hunting, and building igloos. While the film was well–received for invigorating
audiences, many critiqued Flaherty's anti–attempt to accurately represent the native culture of his
film's characters (Fisher, 8 September). This begs the question of how a film can "remain critical
without trivializing, to be

Mead-Hall In Beowulf

  • 1. Mead-Hall In Beowulf The role the mead–hall plays in Anglo–Saxon warrior culture is an important one, for without such a hall, there is no such basis for a community. The mead–hall offers the security and stability that a warrior needs after a long day. Likewise, it is also the warrior culture's ultimate vulnerability, "So times were pleasant for the people there until finally one, a fiend out of hell, began to work his evil in the world" (p1237). As presented in Beowulf, the mead–hall is the very reason he is given a chance to prove his extraordinary strength and power due to Grendal sneaking in the great hall at night to ravenously devour warriors one by one, "So, after nightfall, Grendal set out for the lofty house...there he came upon them, a company of the best asleep from their feasting, insensible to pain and human sorrow...he grabbed thirty men from their resting places and rushed to his lair" (p1238). ... Many grand feasts and gatherings occur in such a setting, warriors come home to the warm hearth of the hall of their lord after completing the tasks they were sent out for. They might find mead being distributed, women about, and perhaps even a young boy turning into a man. A fine example is given in the book, what Grendal hears from a distance of such a grand Mead–Hall, "It harrowed him to hear the din of the loud banquet every day in the hall, the harp being struck and the clear song of a skilled poet telling with mastery of man's beginnings, how the Almighty had made the earth a gleaming plain girdled with waters" ... • 2. Christianity And Paganism In Beowulf In Beowulf the differences between Heorot and Grendel's swamp are personified through setting descriptions, religious context and Beowulf's heroic traits compared with Grendel's anathematic characteristics by highlighting the major conflicts between Christianity and Paganism, emphasizing the contrast of man against monster. Christian ideas are ingrained in different characters, the glorious and brave Beowulf exemplifies good Christian values, while Grendel personifies evil in a devil–like character that Christians associate with Pagans. Grendel is described as a grim demon who haunts the desolate marsh where due to his anathematic descent, is doomed to live banished among other monsters as part of "Cain's clan, whom the creator had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Christian belief, the deer is a symbol of spiritual authority and the devotion of God; Heorot hall stands for these values and contrasts the ghastly characteristics that define Grendel's swamp. In Beowulf, the contrasting settings of Heorot and Grendel's swamp further develop the main conflict of Christianity versus Paganism through biblical references, the reflection of Grendel's anathematic qualities on his swamp, and Heorot hall encompassing the purity of heaven. The contrast between man and monster facilitates this religious conflict as well as conveys the message that all good things can die in the hands of evil; Beowulf upholds the Christian ideals, while Grendel dies away representing the fall of the Pagans. In contrast to the beauty and success of the great Heorot hall, the swamp is full of damned, evil creatures, "The water was infested/ with all kinds of reptiles. There were writhing sea–dragons/ and monsters slouching on slopes by the cliff, / serpents and wild things such as those that often/surface at dawn to roam the sail–road/and doom the voyage. Down they plunged, / lashing in anger at the loud call/ of the battle–bugle" (1425–1429). The swamp is infested with many wild beasts, by nature bloodthirsty and murderous, just like Grendel who becomes a monster through adopting sinful actions and bringing honorable men to their doom. These anathematic savages confirm that only godless creatures can dwell in Grendel's swamp depicting hell, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She was the first of five children born to Edward Sherwood Mead and Emily Fogg Mead, social scientists who had met while attending the University of Chicago. Margaret's early home life, with emphases on education and social issues, exerted a pronounced influence on her later life and career. She was a child of the Progressive Era, when reformers felt that social problems could be solved by the application of the social sciences. • 4. Life Of My Life Essay I was born in a small village on a cold and stormy night, which started the anger that I still carry today. I grew up fast in my life and was soon an outcast to society. Kids picked on me, older people looked down on me, I was unable to fit in anywhere in society. I tried to be nice to others, but they were never nice to me. My mom was the only one who truly liked me. My Dad left me after I was born and he grew to hate me also. It is always cold where I live so I believe that the coldness has affected the hearts of everyone I try and get close to. As I grew into my older teens I tried to get jobs around town. This is when I started to see the town, turn against me, no one wanted to hire me. This made me grow angry and soon I started to develop anger issues. When I finally turned 20, this old man seemed to take pity on me, he gave me a job working in his brick yard. I really liked the job, but the people who I worked with seemed to turn a blind eye to me. I soon learned to ignore this and mind my own business. As time went on the other workers would sing together at a very loud tone, it started to affect my ears and my concentration. After five months in the Brickyard there was a loud bang, so loud it could be heard across all the realms. My ears began to ring with a violent high pitched ring, soon this ring drove me into smashing my own head into the ground trying to make it stop. After this event, all the workers thought I was crazy and tried to beat me. I ran away for my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Gregory Bateson And His Quest Stohs, Alexandra Dr. Barbra Erickson Anth. 480 December 10, 2014 Gregory Bateson and his Quest to Unify our Minds Introduction: Thesis and introduce good old Gregory...1/2 page Gregory Bateson was an anthropologist, psychoanalyst, and cybernetics who contributed to multiple subfields within anthropology along with other fields in the social sciences. Bateson never completely settled into one field, but rather, he synthesized his knowledge to incorporate it into his epistemology and methodologies. Gregory Bateson's contributions to anthropology range from providing new methods of ethnography, helping to establish the field of visual anthropology, influencing ecological, psychological, and linguistics anthropology, to moving cybernetic theory from the natural sciences to the social sciences. Background, Education, and Influences: 1 to 2 pages Gregory Bateson was born in Grantchester, England to an aristocratic family in 1904 (Stagoll 2006). His father, William Bateson, was a prominent geneticist who founded the Cambridge School of Genetics and coined the term "genetics (Stagoll 2006)." William Bateson was a strong advocate of the work of geneticist Gregor Mendel and named Gregory in his honor (Stagoll 2006). • 6. Walter Mead Isolationism According to historians there are a multitude of misconceptions surrounding Americas foreign policy in its earliest days. Perhaps the biggest one being the misunderstanding that is, America was an isolationist country at it's founding. With that being said, how have historians assessed whether or not the United States was an isolationist country from its founding through 1815? This question is best answered by looking at the United States diplomatic interactions with other countries, and its unbeknownst cultural affinity with Britain. Once we look at these two things its rather difficult to say America was an isolationist country from its founding through 1815. To start, it's imperative to understand the meaning of the word "isolationist" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mead states the first treaty America signed in 1778, which was a military alliance with France goes directly against isolationist tendencies. This also erodes Kaplan's point of the U.S. not forming alliances with other countries. Furthermore Mead essentially says from 1778–1793 the United States is beholden to assist France in any foreign conflict they are involved in. However France hadn't engaged in war until 1793, which was when the United States signed the proclamation of neutrality proclaiming neutral in the war between Britain and France. Mead argues George Washington didn't sign this because he wanted America to be an isolationist country, but he signed it because America was so new of a country Washington didn't want to fight a messy European war that could eventually lead to Americas demise. Additionally Mead states, Washington signed the proclamation so the United States could maintain its sovereign independence, and that it had absolutely nothing to do with attempting to be an isolationist state. Furthermore Mead argues that only thirteen years after the United States constitution was ratified, they had participated in their first foreign war. This was when the U.S. allied with Sweden in the Tripolitan War against the North African Barbary States. Mead follows this up by pointing to the quote said by one of the United States founding fathers Thomas Paine. After they won the Tripolitan War. Paine says, "The cause of America is in a great measure the cause of all mankind." Mead essentially states that Paine's quote expressed to the people that the United States was willing to do everything in their power, including foreign intervention to prescribe the rest of the world human liberties, and the right to self government that were staples in America at the current time. Finally Mead points to the war of 1812 when the United States ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Margaret Mead Research Paper American anthropologist Margaret Mead was a born leader, skillful writer, powerful teacher and brilliant environmentalist. She paved the way for a greater understanding of humanity. Her desire to learn stemmed mostly for her desire to both teach and reach people. As an anthropologist who studied amongst some of the finest, her acute attention to her surroundings and desire to learn the finest details made a significant impact not only in her field but in the lives of those that she studied and in turn taught. Mead's connection to both humans and the Earth we inhabit enhanced her understanding of just how unique we are and yet, very much the same. Mead's unique desire to learn the intricate details in lives not only influenced a generation but caused great controversy in it's wake. In her own words, "Always remember that you are absolutely unique, just like everyone else," and unique she was, but somehow, she was not, 'just like anyone else.' Margaret Mead from the beginning had a peaked interest in the intricate details of others' lives. These desires stemmed from what I believe to be her own desire to find out who she in fact was herself. Her exploration to other lands, was not only to find out how different people were from her, but how very much they were the same. Mead's forward–thinking mind has ... • 8. Simmel And Mead: Quote Explanation Duran, Clarisia SOC 368 Take Home Final Essay Set A: Simmel and Mead Quote Explanation Simmel's quote notes that our greatest struggles are derived from our pursuit to uphold our personalities. He states it becomes tough to preserve our own individuality and autonomy in an environment that demands the individual to fit in with one culture or idea. Trying to assimilate into these demands will be the lost existence of the individual. Simmel explains that having autonomy within a society with such demands that determine your survival is dangerous because the individual will not be validated and considered part of such society. Thus it forces them to conform and focus on economic gain. Through this, the individual becomes more one–sided or one–dimensional and ignores extracurricular activities that could possibly enrich their lives. This exposes one central concept for Simmel, dualism. Dualism it's the tension between opposites and the interdependence between the individual and society. Quote Example For example conflict separates people but conflict can also be understood as a form of intimacy and interaction. So conflict involves the inner penetration of opposites. This energy that emotion is investing in the conflict is a type of interaction. This example reflects dualism. Quote in Reference to Alexander's model ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Margaret’s parents were from the midwest, and because of their professions, the family moved quite a bit living in such places as Hampton, New Jersey; Greenwich Village in New York City, and St. Marks Square in Philadelphia. In all three of these battles Beowulf shows great courage and manages to defeat all of these monsters. Although beowulf was able to defeat these three monsters they were different in some ways but also had some similarities. The first battle takes place against Grendel. Grendel is a demon who descended from Cain. He is a very evil monster who kills many people before beowulf hears about what has taken place. When he finds out beowulf travels to the town to put an end to this monster. He waits in the mead hall for Grendel to strike again. At first no one believes that beowulf was strong enough but in fact he was. Unlike when beowulf was fighting grendel's mom, beowulf puts aside his armor and sword to fight with just his hands. Grendel proves to be no match for beowulf as he easily defeats the the monster. This is where the first two fights different from one another. In the first fight beowulf for the most part easily defeats grendel but when grendel's mother finds out and seeks revenge beowulf has to put up a much harder fight because grendel's mother is much stronger ... Margaret Mead Warfare In Margaret Mead's "Warfare: An Invention – Not a Biological Necessity" we see her ideas surrounding the relationship between biological and cultural influences on an aspect of life and society. Mead's ideas play off of some of the thoughts mentioned in Ruth Benedict's "The Individual and the Pattern of Culture". Benedict mentions how there "...is always a give and take,"(114) that is between culture and the individual. Which can be related to Mead's mention of how war or fighting is dependant on a culture's need for that kind of outlet. Because Mead was a student of Benedict's when she was a professor at Columbia University(112) it becomes evident how some of the similarities in their ideas had developed. The Pedestrian By Leonard Mead The Light in the Dark In any given situation, individuals experience conflicts when pursuing a personal desire as particular desires do not conform to the rules that societies standardize for individuals. Individuals quickly adapt to the modernization of the advancement of humanity and technology. Nevertheless, there may be a controversy deciding between obeying society's regulations of consistently keeping up with the innovative contemporary behaviour or sticking with subjective or independent aspirations. In the short story The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury, Leonard Mead's complication between pursuing his personal desire and choosing to conform creates an issue with the development as an individual. Symbols within the story that further highlighted the distinct difference between personal desires and deciding to conform include Mr. Mead's shoes, television, and the houses. Moreover, each symbol that was stated demonstrates a diverse idiosyncratic characteristic about the protagonist as does the psychological components of Mr. Mead such as word choice, speech, behaviour and mental processes. Materialism, closely related to physicalism, states that mind equals the brain; Everything can be fully explained by how the brain functions. Materialism is associated with reductionism in that the theory simplifies the concept of mind to neurophysiological terms. Thomas Nagel critiques this notion in his essay "What Is It Like To Be a Bat?" (1974). Although he himself believes in materialism, Nagel denies that it was the absolute solution to the mind–body problem. He argues that materialist theories of mind omit the essential component: what it is like for an organism to be it. The subjective character of conscious experience can not be understood by anyone outside of the beholder of the consciousness and therefore undermines reductionists' effort to explain consciousness objectively. B This concept is interesting because of how the Anglo–Saxon warrior culture in the story Beowulf that was translated by Burton Raffel, actually uses the mead hall as their main political and party house. C Would this be better than what we do today with separating the work from the play? Or was it just a thing of the times. D The Anglo–Saxon warrior culture mead hall represents the clearest definition of equality you could ever think of. Under one roof the decisions by the king are told to the people while a giant party for the village is happening. By having this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... F By understanding this concept, the Danes created a system close to ours in how the king will provide protection for the people as they work for him. G And this form of trade off is brought up when Beowulf shows up in the famed mead hall. "Hrothgar replied, protector of the Danes:" (456). H as Hrothgar is referred to as the "protector" it shows that he's not just governing the people in from his castle, he's interacting with them. I Without the mead hall to act as a common ground for the people and their king to communicate in Lots of trust and understanding is lost. J Having the great mead hall creates unity also, by bringing the king and his people closer together more of the people's problems become the king's and visa versa. K So when Grendel comes around and starts killing off the people, instead of the king pushing it off he has to deal with it first and foremost. "My tongue grows heavy, and my heart, when i try and tell you what Grendel has brought us, the damage he has done, here in this hall" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. The Statement By Margaret Mead Thesis The video provided for this assignment supports the statement by Margaret Mead due to its illustration of small groups of people making changes. One individual can make a difference, a good example of this was Madalyn Murray O'Hair who petitioned to get prayer taken out of public schools arguing that separation of church and state should be upheld. A single person can make a difference, many people with the same goals and views have a more powerful voice and are empowered to pursue bigger change despite whatever obstacles they face. From the smallest community in the neighborhood where people grew up to the President of the United States of America, anyone can make a change if they determine in their heart to never give up working to obtain positive change. Change is the one constant in life that always remains throughout time. Throughout life, change occurs from birth until death. Human beings can and have pursued changes in their communities, governments, even their nation as a collective force by joining others with similar motivations and goals as themselves. Inequality in life, an ideal that people hold when being oppressed, can spark movements such as civil rights, equal pay, educational rights for all and women's rights to choose what happens to their own bodies. This can grow into organizations that we know today that still fight for civil rights for all, among other organizations fighting for common interests of select groups. Changes are made by ... • 35. Grendel: The Creation of a Monster Grendel is a monster. Although it's not exactly "ethical" to judge one by their appearance, and as shown in other stories such as Frankenstein, one knows a monster when they see one. Grendel has trouble finding his place in the world, because he doesn't feel different than the humans; however they see him as different. Throughout the story Grendel cycles through a variety of beliefs in an attempt to discover who he really is. Growing up, Grendel had to assemble his own beliefs. After the meeting with the ram, he felt that he was alone in the world. Grendel knew he was different than people, stating that "if [he] suddenly showed his face they'd shriek". This shows that Grendel is aware that he is different however deep down ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This all changes when he first hears the shapers song. At this moment, Grendel feels something and further questions himself, wondering if he is truly alone in the world, or if there may be something more. This is the first sense of religion to enter Grendel's life. As the shaper tells of "a battle of good against evil", Grendel realizes that he is the evil one, and he feels remorse. He "bawls". Grendel makes himself known after this song by shouting "Mercy! Peace!" this was his plea for acceptance by the people. However the drunken villagers only see Grendel for the beast he is, and ignore the plea. The humans react in fear. They are not able to understand Grendel's language and they only hear uproar. It is at this point in Grendel's life where he begins to understand his place in society. Grendel continues to listen to the shapers song and is frustrated by how conflicting his reality is to the feeling he gets from the shapers song. Grendel needs direction to truly discover his place. After meeting with the dragon, Grendel's perspective is changed. Although previously Grendel had felt above humans, he had still been equal in a sense to them, being that he was mortal. Now Grendel was invulnerable to the humans. When Grendel is attacked by humans, he "feels nothing". After the dragon charmed Grendel, he became a monster. Grendel is now displaying existentialism towards the people. Feeling that he is above everyone, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Example Of Heroism In Beowulf Question four Beowulf is determined as a hero in my eyes, throughout the brave and heroic attributes that he had undertaken within this poem. When defining a hero in our first week of class, we had come up with the idea that a hero is someone who is: selfless, has strength, sacrifices everything that they have for the greater good and shows confidence. Beowulf has shown all of these attributes beginning with being selfless. Beowulf came to the Danes because he knew that he needed to not only keep his kingdom safe, but surrounding kingdoms. Beowulf's heroism was defined on these next couple of lines. On line 193, "There was no one else like him alive. In his day, he was the mightiest man on earth, high–born and powerful. He ordered a boat that would ply the waves. He announced his plan" (Heaney, 15, 193–196). Beowulf knew the dangers that fighting this demon could bring, but he sacrificed everything he had. If Beowulf would have lost the battle, his Kingdom (Geats) would have been left with nothing and Hrothgars kingdom would still be under attack. Beowulf also shows his strength throughout the poem. When Beowulf arrives at the Danes, he shows no fear. Beowulf speaks with Hrothgar to learn what is true about his threat. Beowulf speaks giving the Danes much hope, line 294 " whatever it is, this danger abroad in the dark nights, I come to proffer my wholehearted help and counsel" (Heaney, 21, 294–298). Beowulf is a hero and a leader, even if we look at him within modern times. Beowulf shows cause and reason to why he is at the Danes, he creates leadership upon his men and he has shown devotion towards this cause of wanting to defeat Grendal the demon in the poem. Every move Beowulf takes in this poem is what I believe we would want in the modern times of war. We want a leader that will be able to take charge and follow through with the actions they speak upon. In modern time, we also want a leader that protects our land and has their best opinion out for their Country. We want a leader like Beowulf. There is times that as a reader one could think that he is only completing these heroic attributes to uphold his overall reputation of himself, but isn't that everyone's main goal when completing a monumental task? ... • 37. Utopia Vs Privatization Essay Even though mobility, utopias and privatization have many similarities, do they work together in urban space? When I first read the words I thought that they have a lot in common so they must all interact. Once I thought about the words individually I realized that they have some ideas that could also clash despite the fact that they do all have connections. To decide these connections we must understand what mobility, utopia and privatization is first. Mobility is a huge part of the culture in the United States. It is defined as the ability to move freely and easily. This idea of mobility started with the very first immigrants. We clearly have immigrants from all over the world, in fact, by 2006 it was estimated that 12 percent of the U.S. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In class, we talked about three utopian ideas that were actually put into action in a few cities. The first is the city beautiful movement. The design is just like the name makes it sounds; the idea that everything in the city will be designed with beauty in mind. This meant that it would reflect the rebirth of the United States through confidence and class of mostly prominent, architectchally sound buildings. A real example is Central Park in New York City. Despite the rapidly changing population of New York, this design is clearly thriving. The next utopian idea was from Le Corbusier called the Radiant City. His idea stemmed from changing the polluted industrial city into a clean one. He wanted to do this by making taller buildings where large amounts of people would reside to ensure for more green space. One can see a city that reflects this design idea in Brasilla. The last utopian idea is called the garden city by Ebenezer Howard and was implemented in Greenbelt, Maryland for one example. The garden city utopia is designed in concentric rings with a mix between a country and a city feel. Howard thought if the city had both the country and the city feel that everyone would want to live ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Mead Hall In Beowulf The mead hall was a major factor in the Anglo–Saxon culture. As the two tribes, Angles and Saxons joined together, they carried on their traditions of mead halls and brought them to England. The mead halls not only brought them together, but it also made the Anglo–Saxons feel safer and happier as a culture when they gathered there. It acted as a safe–haven for them to gather and celebrate, drink, and talk. Scops would assemble a group of men and women to apprise them of epic tales. While other times, the mead hall was used for celebrating their victories. Warriors often celebrated by drinking mead and feasting together; they also used the mead hall as sleeping quarters. Hrothgar rewards Beowulf and his warriors with gold treasures to celebrate their victorious battles and accomplishments. The queen, Wealhtheow, bestows Beowulf with the golden cup along with a gold necklace and armband. During the feast, Hrothgar gives his warriors gold treasures from his treasure chest as an act of gratitude. In their culture, gold represents honor and most would do anything for it. Gold is represented and displayed in Beowulf on the skin of Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon. It is also incorporated in the treasures. The dragon guards it his entire life, and it is the mission of many, including Beowulf to slay the dragon to get the treasures he is protecting. The moments before Beowulf dies, he asks Wiglaf to get him some of the dragon's gold so that his last sight could be what he was fighting for. Treasures were also placed on Beowulf's funeral pyre. Grendel's arm and the sword was another treasure that Beowulf earned. Because Beowulf killed Grendel by ripping off his arm, Beowulf hung the arm to show and display in Heorot Hall; the sword was his weapon that he took to try to defeat Grendel's mother. Grendel's arm showed his bravery and loyalty to his lord and his men. He showed by example to his men that it takes courage and honor to fight for your life for what you believe is right. When scops tell the story of Beowulf, it is an honor to him for the community to hear in the mead hall. The characters and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Summary Of Margaret Mead's Coming Of Age In Samoa Margaret Mead was first to major in psychology at Bernard but later went on to Colombia and received a doctorate studying with Franz Boas and Ruth Benedict. To her Anthropology was a big commitment to learn and study new human behaviors. In her book Coming Of Age In Samoa she argued the children now a days in a modern society are forced to fit education in their lives rather than "inflexible education mould". Her main goal was to study the lives and behavior changes from a new born to a young adult. Although she could have done her research in Modern society she wanted to get a different aspect of behaviors on minds that where not corrupted. Her research was aiming towards a different type of culture, a culture that education was not the focus but more based on home standards and values. In her book Coming of Age In Samoa she describes the social facts and gives a thick description based on research done on "simple people", theories that made her book a best seller. In Meads intro to the book she explains the research they are trying to conduct and how it cannot be done in a modern world country. She explains they have no control over to what the child has been exposed to that every research they would conduct would result in a different outcome. To solve this dilemma, she decided to target her studies to "simple people, primitive peoples, whose society has never attained the complexity of our own." (pg. 7 paragraph 2). Therefore in 1925 Margaret Mead went out on her first ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Analysis Of Robert Flaherty 's Famous Work Nanook Of The... The challenge of accurately representing ethnography, the critical analysis and systematic inspection of everyday life across cultures, has been repeatedly attempted with myriad intentions and has subsequently evolved over time. This paper will examine four iconic anthropological filmmakers in the mid–twentieth century in their individual distinctive endeavors to contribute to and accomplish this goal of developing ethnographic film. From Robert Flaherty 's objective to showcase culture as art, to Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson's intent to produce a purely unbiased and scientific cinematic record, to John Marshall's desire to present works which would engage audiences politically, one can trace the evolving narrative of ethnographic film itself, climaxing in the ultimate quest for reflexivity. Robert Flaherty's famous work Nanook of the North (1922) artistically depicts the life of Nanook, a fictional Inuk man in the Arctic. Throughout what became known as the pioneering "documentary" of its field, the film follows Nanook's family in their day–to–day tasks. With no dialogue, a dramatic score ever–presently serves as narration throughout the staged scenes of trading, hunting, and building igloos. While the film was well–received for invigorating audiences, many critiqued Flaherty's anti–attempt to accurately represent the native culture of his film's characters (Fisher, 8 September). This begs the question of how a film can "remain critical without trivializing, to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
