1. Q1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media
products
2. The title of the film• The title of the film “Inside” is placed over
an establishing shot of the meeting point
between our two main characters. We
placed it here to enhance the importance
of the location. The title itself is short and
basic but also a very mysterious one
leaving the viewer to discover their own
meaning for it and how the title relates to
the film. The title slides into the scene
while the camera is panning around the
area, to show its significance in the film.
3. The setting/location
• The setting for the film came from a
classic idea of how a thriller movie should
look, we chose a very urban area in the
city centre with many high rise buildings
and also many business or office type
buildings, to match the locations of other
thriller movies such as the “Bourne” films.
Here we have a screen shot of the over
ground train entering the city this shot in
my opinion helps the title out by showing
that something is happening inside the
city. I believe that many of the beginning
shots of the location make the film look
like a thriller specifically rather than any
other genre of film.
4. Costumes and Props
• When choosing the costumes for our
actors we felt as if they should look like
typical businessmen/spies/gangsters
wearing formal clothing like a shirt and tie
etc. The formal clothing represents a more
mature contented film such as a
thriller, also previous to picking the
costumes for our actors we had watched
other thriller films we noticed that in the
majority of the films the main male
characters all wore formal clothing this
influenced our choice on what costumes
our characters should wear. On the left
there is a screen shot of our actor in
comparison to the “James Bond” actors
we see that they are all wearing formal
clothing like our character.
5. Camerawork and editing
• Once the plan for our film had been
decided on we agreed that many over-
the-shoulder shots needed to be taken
due to the conversation between both
characters alongside many mid shots to
protect the identity of one actor. It was
important for us to keep the characters
identity hidden as this was part of the
plot.
• On the left we have a screen shot of how
we used the shade to our advantage as to
hide the identity of the character during
our over-the-shoulder shot.
6.
7. Credit font and style
• When choosing the credit font we scrolled
through many different styles, we were
looking for something that matched our
film and did not stand out, we wanted the
font to fit in nicely rather than something
that looked like a cartoon or circus type
font. When we had decided on what font
style to pick we were faced with the
objective on how each title should come
on screen. We decided that the first four
titles would be plain and a simple, a black
background with white font. The rest of
the titles would come on screen during
the opening of the film also in white font
however the size of the writing had to be
smaller.
8. Story and how the opening sets it up
• Our opening is based on two
gangsters/agents who are meeting to
complete an exchange. The item being
exchanged is a micro-chip. We chose a micro-
chip because it will give the audience
questions such as “what information is inside
the micro-chip?”. Apart from this we had
decided that one of the main characters’
identity should be hidden, we believed that
this would make the audience ask questions
of the character, “who is he ?”, “why cant we
see his face?” . This would also lead the
audience to question whether he is an
antagonist(bad guy) or protagonist. We
wanted our film to suit the typical spy thriller
genre such as James Bond or Bourne Identity
9. Genre and how the opening suggests
it?
• Our film contains many different thriller
genre conventions. In my opinion the non-
diegetic soundtrack which introduces our
film opening immediately tells the
audience that it is a thriller movie. We felt
that the soundtrack chosen matches the
pace of the film overall and it was perfect
for our film, it suited it very well. Apart
from the soundtrack the opening shots of
the inner city and high rise building give it
the audience an almost immediate thriller
feel due to the urban area’s similarities to
other thriller films.
10. How characters are introduced
• When the initial idea for our film was
created we decided that the main
characters identities are anonymous, no
names were given in the script and also no
knowledge of the characters were given.
We done this so that the characters would
come across as agent or spy like
characters. I think that we done this very
well and introduced our characters quite
professionally like other spy thriller films.
