1. HISTORY!
MUNICIPALITY OF BILAR
After the historic blood compact between Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, the Spanish
priest-explorer and the Datu Sikatuna, the chieftain of Bohol, group of Spaniards were
commissioned by the Spanish government to explore and establish towns and parishes in
some parts of the island. After the towns of Baclayon, Tagbilaran and Loboc had been
established, some Spanish priest and soldiers went to the interior part of Bohol. In the course
of their travel, these explorers passed by a
village with a group of women harvesting
rice. Others were drying palay. In Spanish
language, the foreigners inquired from
them in the dialect, “Nagbinlad”. Binlad
was then registered in the explorers’ record
book and use the name in their
communications.
However, in 1830, when the place was officially organized into a municipality by the
virtue of a Royal Decree, BILAR was the name adopted and officially recorded. Bilar had a
big area. It included the towns of Sierra Bullones, which seceded from the mother town in
1863, Sevilla which became an independent town in 1872, Carmen which was organized into
a new town in 1874, and Batuan, whose resident petitioned to organized themselves into a
new and separate municipality was officially approved on October 31, 1903.
The present Bilar is bounded on the north by the town of Batuan, east by Dimiao,
southeast by Lila, south by Loboc aand west by Sevilla. Considering the vast cover, caves and
abundant supply of water, this town was upon a time the hide-out of the famous Francisco
Dagohoy who led a rebellion against the Spaniards in 1774. Miguel Valmoria, another brave
Boholano leader made this last defense here against the Spaniards and the Americans.
During the World War II, the Bohol Guerilla
Resistance Movement was first organized in this
town with Sgt. Emilio Fullido as the organizer and
guiding head of the movement. Later, it expanded to
the towns of Bohol making Carmen as the main
headquarters. The town fiesta is celebrated on May
15th every year. The people of Bilar spent lavishly
during this festivity in the honor of Patron Saint,
San Isidore the Farmer.
