Balilihan is a municipality located in Bohol, Philippines. It was originally sparsely settled and became a prosperous farming community over time as the people managed to cultivate crops like coconuts, cacao, and rice. According to the 2015 census, Balilihan has a population of 17,903 people and is the fourth largest municipality in Bohol in terms of land area. The municipality celebrates festivals like their annual town fiesta in July and Sumad Day in September.

At the beginning, life was hard for exile for the
land had never been tamed before by
agriculture. Many died as a result of
malnutrition and disease, but in time, the
people of Balilihan managed to coax a living
from the land, planting coconuts and cacao
and transforming the open lands to ricefields.
Now, Balilihan had become the prosperous
farming community that we know of today.

Tagbilaran through Cortes , or 20 km
northeast through Corella.
It has the fourth largest land area of
the province, with 150 square
kilometres of land.
4. History of Balilihan
The place is a panorama of verdant hills,
rugged mountains and green fields.
The beautiful municipality is said to have been
so called because of the grass (balili) which
grew in abundance in the locality. Balilihan
means “a place where plenty of grass grows.”
It is said to have been organized as a
municipality in 1828. It used to be a part of
Baclayon and was sparsely settled.

barangays namely:
Baucan Norte, Baucan Sur, Boctol, Boyog
Norte, Boyog Proper, Boyog Sur, Cabad,
Candasig, Cantalid, Cantomimbo, Cogon,
Datag Norte, Datag Sur, Del Carmen Este
(Poblacion), Del Carmen Norte (Poblacion),
Del Carmen Sur (Poblacion), Del Carmen
Weste (Poblacion), Del Rosario, Dorol,
Haguilanan Grande, Hanopol Este, Hanopol
Norte, Hanopol Weste, Magsija, Maslog,
Sagasa, Sal-ing, San Isidro, San Roque,
Santo Niño and Tagustusan.

First Settlers of Balilihan
It is said that the first inhabitants of the town
were former rebels, defeated followers of
Dagohoy who were forcibly settled in the area
by Spanish authorities in 1828-1829 following
the end of the longest rebolt in Philippine
History.

8. Hanopol was formerly the biggest barrio
of Balilihan and is said to be the rice
granary of the town. Aside from rice, the
people of Balilihan also produce corn,
bananas, cassava, and all sorts of
vegetables and other root crops such as
sweet potato (camote) and gabi. The
people are also into basket weaving,
handbag making, sinamay and saguran
making, buri mat weaving and hat
making.

9. The municipality of Balilihan holds
its annual town fiesta every 16
July in honor of Our Lady of Mount
Carmel, however, other barangays
(Hanopol - comprising 10
barangays) celebrate their fiesta in
honor of their patron Santo Niño
de Cebú on the 16 January.

A celebration takes place during the
last week of September, and on
September 29 of every year declared
as a special nonworking public holiday

its Sumad Day or foundation
