This is the magazine research for my construction of my magazine coursework. It shows the secondary research I carried out so that my magazine suits my target audience.
3. Magazine cover analysis
• In this magazine, many conventions are used on the
cover of this specialist magazine for films and
movies.
Superimposition- the avatar
character is overlapping the
brand name which is total
film. This means that people
already know this brand as
it is considered as a popular
one, even though the title is
covered, people will still
notice.
Key signifier- the first
thing on the cover
that attracts the eye
is the character from
avatar because lately
in the time, it was the
best selling movie in
the UK and one of the
most popular also.
The three key puffs for
the content on the inside
are ‘wild things’, ‘ why the
big paws’, ‘from alfie to
alfred’. The first two sort
of links to Avatar because
it is similar to animals
The anchorage text is
avatar and it represents
the meaning of the
image which is a avatar
character.
4. General magazine analysis
• ‘Heat’ is a generalist magazine that
doesn’t specialise in one genre. This
type of magazine generally covers
multiple genres. In this magazine, it
covers gossip, music, glamour and
trending news in the celebrity world. It
would attract audiences of ages 16-30
because its mainly for teenagers and
young adults as the magazine talks
about famous celebrities that are
popular to young audiences. It is
supposedly made for women who is
the target audience because it has
feminine colours such as (pink, red,
white).
5. These types of magazines are aimed at people who are interested in football or sport in
general. The colours that the magazine producers use are mainly a wide range of them to
make them look vibrant and colourful. This is because football is a cheerful sport and the
background on MOTD magazine is the same colours as the Barcelona kit. The conventions
used are quite similar to other magazines such as the title, the key image and small text
boxes around the key image. The thing that these magazines have is the player’s name on
the cover to promote the player or help to recognise him. The age range for these types of
magazines will attract audiences from the age from 14-18 for world soccer because they
have a more maturity look and a professional finish whereas the MOTD magazine is more
for children because of its cartoony finish. Most magazines will write in capitals to make
their cover stand out from the others. Four Four Two is a another specialist magazine but
its similar to world soccer as it has that glossy finish that mainly attracts older audiences.
It has a more casual layout as it has a white background and players on the front.
6. These magazines are made from a brand called Men’s Health. They appeal to audiences who
are keen into health and fitness- more on the male part of view. So this appeals more on
men than women because the key images always include a man on the cover to show that
its for men. It doesn’t look as colourful as a fitness magazine doesn’t have to be colourful
and people who likes to read these types of magazines wouldn’t care about the detail. The
font is all capitals as it creates an masculine body of the font. The writing is fairly big and
attracts people by helping them to achieve something like “ 53 FAT LOSS SECRETS”, SIX PACK
ABS”. The magazine in the middle will also appeal to the audience because an actor who is
muscular and has a toned body tend to attract more men to be like him. The age range for
this type of magazine might start from 16+ to adults.
7.
8. Genre conventions
• The mood board is made out of all types of sports magazines.
It mainly consists of simple colours as it doesn’t focus much
on its appearance. In order to attract its audience, it has the
international football stars on the covers to make their
magazines stand out. Some sport magazines are formal and
informal such as ‘world soccer’ which has a formal layout,
whereas in ‘Match of the day’, it uses cartoony colours to
appeal to another target audience- for younger ages. The
formal magazines cost around £3-£6. This states that they are
in the high end of pricing and also will be for older audiences
as it has more information about trending/past news. The
informal magazines cost around £1-£3 which means they are
affordable for younger audiences. Furthermore, they have
more pictures than text which makes them buy it.
9. Deconstructing a magazine cover
Masthead- this is the name and
logo of the magazine and it
introduces who they are. The
‘World’ and ‘soccer’ has a different
font colour so it contrasts to the
gold background. This is made so
that it stands out and appeals to
the public more.
The Lead- the introduction
paragraph of this article and
is usually written in bold. In
this magazine, it is located in
the middle between the
players and it says about
them.
Leading- the space
between the lines of text
Mode of address-
how the magazine
talks to the audience.
Gutters- the gaps between
the columns of text
10. Deconstructing a contents page
White space- white
parts of a page other
than text or pictures.
Anchorage text- the way
in which helps to pin
down the meaning of a
picture. This helps to
organise the different text
set onto the page.
Banners- the text that
stands out because on its
coloured background
Cross head- small sub-
headings that split up a
large block of text.
These images appeal
to the audience as
they are famous in
the football industry
and it will make the
audience interested
11. Deconstructing a double page spread
Banners- the back
text stands out
with the white
background.
White space- white
space makes the
text not look
cramped
Sans serif font-
makes the writing
clear and easy
readable for the
reader
Cross heads- the
subtitles are there
to separate the big
sections of writing.
What this does is
to arrange of the
different types of
text so that people
know what they
reading
Body copy- the information
throughout the articles are
professionally done and are
presented to make it look neat
and formal
12. Target audience
My target audience will for magazines that are general in sport such as football,
trending music and urban clothing. The ages of my target audience will be around
16-24 year olds because they are considered as teenagers/young adults and there
are many groups like this in the UK. A website called UK Tribes tells about the
different types of people in the UK. The types of people that will be interested in
my magazine will be:
• Chavers- drugs, booze, dancing and getting drunk with their mates! With
commercial EDM (Electronic Dance Music) dominating the charts in recent
years and festivals popping up in cities all over the UK and Europe; the Chavers
are alive and one of the most familiar stereotypes of UK youth culture. A
friendly, down to earth Tribe that will spend big on a holiday over everyday
essentials, the Chavers (especially the live-for-the-weekend students
compared to the music-junkies) are much more welcoming than the name
suggests. However be warned – drug use rates in the UK have halved for 16-
24s in the last decade, so the Chavers of today aren’t going as hard as they
used to!
13. • Sports Junkies are one of the most aspirational of Mainstream Tribes, but
also one of the least influential. They’re dedicated to sporting
achievement and prepared to cut out friends and habits that stand in the
way. Sports Junkies used to mean being motivated, dedicated and all
about the win – but today, the majority are much more high street than
high level performance. They are simply young people for whom playing
team sports is a key passion point in their life, and build their identity and
community around playing sports.
• Urban and Skater inspired, US-rooted breed of New Casual – who love
Hip-Hop and electronic, niche knowledge, luxury sportswear and limited
editions. Hypebeasts are a new breed of New Casual/Hipster– obsessed
with the aspirational Urban lifestyle and the brands that go with it. With a
thriving online culture, key icon products and their own language (Bump,
OG, Grail, Wavey…).
In conclusion, the type of people that will be interested in my magazine and
thinking of buying it, will be people who are into a variety of things including
urban clothing, sports and music. They will like trending clothing and popular
sports that is widely known and played such as football.
14. Questionnaire analysis
• 22 of the responses have
picked that they are between
15 and 24. this shows that
most of the people taking part
in this questionnaire are young
audiences. This can help me
when I start making my
magazine by making it suitable
for that age range.

15. Questionnaire analysis
• In this question, it shows that
there are more males taking in
this questionnaire than the girls.
However, to make this unbiased
to boys, in the future, I am going
use colours and make the
appearance unisex so its
suitable for both genders.
16. Questionnaire analysis
• This question helps
me making the
magazine in the
future because it
shows the things that
people are in to. I can
then add these types
of things in the
magazine so I have a
wider range of a
target audience.
17. Questionnaire analysis
• This question shows that out of
all the people that answered
shows that sports is the most
favourable choice. However, film
and fashion are also quite high
in choice so for my magazine,
I'm going to include sport, film
and fashion so it suits my target
audience.
