Advantages And Achievements Of Benito Mussolini
Benito Mussolini, the great leader of the Italian people. He was aggressive, loved, and praised. He
was the dictator of dictators to the people of Italy. Benito Mussolini had achieved many things
during his rule in Italy. Yet, one of his most important achievements would have been the ability to
stay in power and the creation of a cult through deception and propaganda.
Benito Mussolini is most famous for being the dictator–like prime minister for Italy during World
War II. He was able to keep his position of power through the deception of his people. Mussolini
would broadcast victories (even small ones) and quiet down the losses. (122 and 170) This would

Benito Mussolini Rise To Power
Benito Mussolini was born in Dovia di Predappio, Forli Italy on July 28, 1883. His father was a
blacksmith and a socialist who spent most of his money on politics and mistresses. His mother Rosa
Maltoni was a school teacher who provided the family resources. Mussolini was an ardent socialist
as a youth. He then got expelled for his believe in WW1. As Mussolini grew up he had been kicked
out of several schools for defying the school's authority. As he became older he got his teaching
credential and worked as a schoolmaster, like his mother. Mussolini moved to switzerland to
promote socialism but authorities found out and got him dismissed from the party. He then came

(magazine writer Isaac Marcosson). Many loved Mussolini his care for italy, he was described as a
calm genuine person. He was a great learner in many things like war, leader and dictator and he
never repeated the same thing twice, instead he improved and made italy better. he was always calm

Benito Cereno
In her article entitled "Black Masks: Melville's Benito Cereno", Jean Fagan Yellin says that "when
Benito Cereno, Herman Melville's tale of slave revolt, appeared in 1855, it made use of Negro
stereotypes already standard in American fiction" (Yellin 678). Captain Amasa Delano is
characterized as the typical Yankee man. Yellin elaborates on this by analyzing his self–important,
authoritarian persona, observing that he is "investigating the strange ship, self–righteously
expounding the doctrine of work, officiously planning to manage affairs on the San Dominick,
proudly resentful of any implied social slight, and in no way averse, after helping the distressed
Spaniard, to totting up the price he expects to be paired for his trouble. He smugly believes himself
the peculiarly favored child of Providence" (Yellin 682). When we view him in contrast with
Cereno, an aristocratic European, Delano can now be assessed as representation of the idealistic
"New World Man" or the typical American white man, meaning he is seen as "democratic,
compassionate, generous, capable of decisive action, although blind to evil and unable to learn from
his experience" (Yellin 682). This is best exemplified in his views of the black slaves on the San
Dominick. His assumptive thinking is prevalent in the story because throughout his initial
exploration of the San Dominick, he buys into the illusion that what is happening upon the ship is
not deviating from reality. The presentation of black slaves as

Benito Mussolini was the first fascist dictator in history, however many historians question his
ideologies that helped him rise to power and become the most powerful man in Italy. Mussolini's
use of the Blackshirts was effective, to a great extent that the "authority was enforced by the use of
the Blackshirts (1)." Above all many people considered him as the "only man capable of restoring
order (2)", when Italy was slipping into political chaos moreover he promised to bring back the
glory days of Italy in Ancient Rome. Mussolini heavily relied on the Blackshirts to help him restore
order, become the Duce and to also stay in power and fight the opposition. The essay will outline

Ghosts And Skeletons By Benito Cereno
Ghostly representations of "the other" imagine a social evil that has not been put to rest. These
images reoccur in the Western canon, marking the persistence of slavery long after its abolition.
Haunting, ghosts and skeletons in Benito Cereno act as a vehicle through which the suppressed
return to the stage with a message. The ghosts carry with them all that the imperialists wanted to
control, including emotions, and more precisely, the emotions of the oppressed. I argue that ghosts
and skeletons comprise an area of tension in which the appearance of the "other" reveals that the
dominant party's control is incomplete. Yet, the presence is merely ghostly due to the constant
policing and lack of respect for the Other. These ghosts also break through the boundaries of the
dominant culture's paradigms and identities (Harpham 17), signaling potential political crisis. This
text signals the fear of the retaliation of the Other through ghostly representations by projecting on
to the other, their own identities of brutality and irrationality. "Benito Cereno" by Herman Melville
overturns the racist images of the colonized by relocating evil in the order of slavery. Hauntings
carry the perspectives and powers of the slaves by preserving the dead amidst the living and the past
amidst the present, they muddle up the concept of time and therefore defy the Western dream of
complete control. In Benito Cereno, which was written by Melville in 1855, New England captain

How Mussolini Changed Rome
By Luke Hornby
December 23, 2016
This paper examines changes to Rome during Mussolini's rise and rule of Italy from 1922–1945.
Mussolini saw himself as the next great Caesar, and wanted the power of his radical political
ideology, Fascism, to be projected throughout the city. As Mussolini's changed from the leader of an
empire city to a puppet of Nazi Germany, so did the city. Mussolini states his love of Rome in his
autobiography, My Rise and Fall: "I have given particular attention to the Capital. Rome is a
universal city, dear to the hearts of Italians and the whole world" .
Mussolini's My Rise and Fall is a two–volume book. The first volume (My Rise) contains

In My Rise and Fall he says: "trees were paved while historic areas moved or destroyed. Mussolini
wanted to remember the parts of Rome's past that were in accordance with fascist thought and
prosperity while destroying areas that were representative of negative times from the fascist point of
view . Primarily, his focus was on keeping historical areas that symbolized periods of Rome's great
military strength, in keeping up his idea of Fascism being the successor to imperial military Rome .
As a result, many areas not in line with his ideas, including areas of the ***were destroyed.
Mussolini also wanted to create space in Rome, as to make the city as receptive to aesthetics as
possible. Any impurities that lied within the city were destroyed or moved outside or Rome . To
complete making Rome the ultimate fascist tourist city, he ensured that the censored media did not
publish any news that would convince tourist to stay from Italy . The Capitoline Hill, Piazza
Venizia, and the Boulevard Via del fiori all saw major changes, as did many other places in Rome .
New para–military customs, such as the adoption of Fasces as a symbol and the Roman salute,
enabled Mussolini to control a nation by associating it with its supposed

Benito Mussolini, What is Fascism?
Italy faced serious postwar economic problems which became known as "The Two Red Years". It
faced inflation problems due to government printing money to pay for weapons, workers on strike,
arms and shipbuilders became bankrupt due to lack of government order, and unemployment rose to
two million as returning soldiers searched for work. Benito Mussolini, upon being removed from the
Socialist Party for advocating Italy 's participation in battle, organized the Fascist Party following
the war. He gained followers among war veterans and the middle class by exploiting their fears of
unemployment, chaos, communism, and a political domination by lower classes. The Russian

Mussolini also states that "happiness is a myth", an unobtainable goal. Fascism is for the purpose of
observing and developing humanity and "believes neither in the possibility nor in the utility of
perpetual peace." Fascism is the philosophy of government that glorifies the state and nation and
assigns control to the state. Mussolini believes that "the foundation of Fascism is the conception of
the State, its character, its duty, and its aim." While the state is responsible for organizing the nation,
there is a sufficient amount of liberty for the individual. Under Fascism, an Empire is able to lead
other nations without conquering them. It resembles Social Darwinism closely. The idea of the
survival of the fittest means that the strong nation comes out ahead, and Mussolini promises to
become the strongest. With a strong dictatorial leader, wants can be achieved through obtaining
strong military and brute force alone. It promoted masculine heroism, militarism, and discipline.
Enormous amounts of money were dedicated to military, and to serve in the military was an honor.

Essay on Benito Juarez
Benito Juarez was one of the most prominent and resourceful leaders in Mexico's history. He raised
the standard of living and championed the poor. However, it took Juarez half his life to become such
a dominant political figure.
He was born in San Paulo Guelatao in the Mexican State of Oaxaca. His parents were
Indians, and he was raised a shepherd boy. His parents died when he was three, leaving Benito to his
unmarried uncle. His uncle believed that the only way for him to better his place in society was to
become a priest. So, on December 18, 1818, Benito at the age of twelve ran away to the city to
learn. He entered the city penniless, and didn't even speak the language.

capital. Then after only a one–year term in congress, he became governor of his state in 1848. He
helped his state become one of the most prosperous in Mexico. He improved health care, education,
stimulated economic growth by creating large civic projects, providing more jobs to the common
people. He reduced the debt, while improving the economy, and raising the standard of living
among the rural poor people. He bettered his state by reducing corruption, and creating a fair civil
service system.
He rarely carried a weapon and broke down problem in a military garrison, without using
weapons, only by negotiation with the people. In 1852 he retired, after angering the national leader,
Santa Anna. During his term as governor, he had accomplished a lot. His state was a model of
stability, staying in order even while the national government changed hands four times. He wanted

Philosophy Of Benito Mussolini
Benito Mussolini was one of the most influential leaders of the twentieth century. He led a fringe
political party to the creation of a new order in the country of Italy after World War One; seemingly
taking and implementing notes from teaching of Niccoló Machiavelli's The Prince in his early rule
as "Il Duce". However, after his rise to power he stumbled and went against many of the things
Machiavelli taught. Mussolini's triumphs as the leader of Italy must be looked at with admiration
due to the fact of how well he follows Machiavelli's teachings in his early rule.
Mussolini used virtue instead of fortune to get to his political standings. In 1919, Benito created the
"Black Shirts" which he used to terrorize political opponents who went against his beliefs
(biography.com). He capitalized on the discontent of the Italian people due to the Treaty of
Versailles instead of relying solely on his socioeconomic standings to get power. He followed the
teaching of Machiavelli, "Men like these who become princes through the exercise of their own
virtu find it hard to achieve that status but easy to keep it" (Machiavelli, 11). He took the harder path
of earning the people's trust through words and actions rather than money and wealth. He was a
private citizen who relied on his ability to lead people instead of only throwing money at problems
to him in a chair of political significance.
Mussolini had favor in the eyes of the public in his early days of rule. Machiavelli states,

The Falling Skies Of Benito Mussolini
Falling Skies
Ignorance is bliss they say, at least until you die from something completely preventable. The initial
coming of the redstones in 1928 was met with a fearful curiosity at first but ultimately something
potentially harmful across the seas, Italy had far more important matters at hand such as forging an
alliance with the Vatican, recognizing it as a sovereign state and Mussolini with his family receiving
an official blessing from the Pope. It officially declared itself a totalitarian state in 1935 and using
propaganda to depose the king through plebiscite thus making Benito Mussolini the sole leader.
Wanting to increase its prestige on the national stage it successfully and swiftly invaded Ethiopia in
1935 making it a subservient colony. Other nations viewed this as quite irresponsible as the redstone
crisis was a far greater concerns that needed the cooperation of all Great Powers. Of course Italy
didn't care.
Red Tide
Following the days of the USSR's attack on Poland, on October 5th Italy declared war on it
following France's and the UK's example. Initially it sent a large numbers of forces to support the
rearming German and Hungarian troops before the Soviets reached their borders but it proved futile
as the Soviet spearheaded themselves all the way to Paris by December. Recalling its troops from
mainland Europe, it began consolidating its forces to prepare an attack on the Soviet's holding in the
Black Sea aiming to relive the days of the Crimean War. By

Benito Mussolini Propaganda Essay
Once upon a time in a land not–so–far–away lived two ruthless rulers. Before they were rulers,
though, they had both fought in a great war. The first was on the winning side, but the second was
not. However, both rulers felt cheated and were full of anger. The first decided to create a
government in which he believed everyone was created to serve the nation. He was very successful,
so the second copied his regime tactics, but just kicked up the ruthlessness. Therefore, the second
ruler overshadowed the first, and this is where the real story begins. Benito Mussolini is one of the
most influential individuals of the twentieth century because his fascist regime was copied by Adolf

don't know it, but Mussolini as well as Hitler alienated another race. Mussolini and Hitler alike
thrived on propaganda. In order to spread the word about their Fascist regimes, Mussolini and Hitler
had to market them. Throughout Italy, pictures of the Duce/Mussolini and slogans were put up
everywhere. Every speech he gave was broadcast on the radio, but other than that Mussolini did
little in radio. His speciality was newspaper. In his younger years Mussolini was a journalist and,
therefore, knew the ins and outs of newspapers. Mussolini took his propaganda so seriously that he
handpicked every picture of himself to make sure only the flattering ones made it in. Aside from
newspaper, private films showed almost every evening to give off the illusion that the country was
doing better than is was (Jardine–Bayne, 1968). During one of his speeches, George Seldes, an
American journalist at the time, wrote, "I had never heard an Italian orator so restrained... [he was

After a voting session between the socialist and the Nazi's, due to specific circumstances, Hitler was
proclaimed Chancellor by President Hindenburg in January 30, 1933. Soon right after rising to

his party were going to lead a false flag operation where they were to set fire to the Reichstag,
which housed the parliament at the time, and frame a number of communist followers for it. Soon
after, Hitler managed to convince the president to issue a decree against communists, after which the
government instituted mass arrests of communists, including all of the Communist Party

Symbolism In Benito Cereno
"Benito Cereno", a novel written by Herman Melville, has been the topic of many debates since its
publication. This novel is filled with so much symbolism that it makes it very difficult to get a clear
and succinct analysis of the novel. As one reads this novel different themes and symbols become
apparent. One such theme is good vs. evil. Melville utilizes color symbolism to signify that black
was completely evil and white was pure good. The issue of good vs. evil is present throughout
"Benito Cereno", and can be seen through the actions of Captain Delano and the Blacks on board
San Dominick. It is also seen through the writing of Herman Melville himself. Captain Amasa

why they were sailing in such a poor manner. After he went onboard the ship he saw the hungry and

fetch back as much water as the whale–boat could carry, with whatever soft bread the steward might
have, all the remaining pumpkins on board, with a box of sugar, and a dozen of his private bottles of
cider." This benevolent act reveals to the reader the pure goodness of Captain Delano. Captain
Delano is also characterized as an undistrustful man. "Absurd, then, to suppose that those questions
had been prompted by evil designs. Thus, the same conduct, which, in this instance, had raised the
alarm, served to dispel it. . . At last he began to laugh at his former forebodings." Although Captain

A Brief Look at Benito Mussolini
Who is Mussolini?
Benito Mussolini was an Italian dictator who thrived in the times of both World Wars. Though he
was a strong leader with a lot of persistence, his works and contributions in WWII weren't as
successful as he would have hoped. Even though he had the almighty Adolfo Hitler on his side, he
still somehow succeeded to turn his entire country against him in the end and lose one of the most
well known wars in all of history.
The Pact of Steel: How it All Started
Mussolini and his country were an independent cause. Mussolini was a fascist who didn't want
handouts from other countries or people. Hitler knew this, and began to persuade him into joining
forces with Germany. Mussolini objected at first; he despised Hitler, jealous of his success and eager
to achieve it with Italy alone. But Hitler persisted, talking highly of Mussolini and his troops
everywhere, about his invasions of Ethiopia and all of his successes as a dictator and general. This
made Mussolini feel good, and eventually, it swooned him over to Hitler's plea for Italy to work
with Germany. Mussolini, in the end, believed this would be a good idea, because if the strong
countries– Italy and Germany– took on the rest of the weaker countries, they wouldn't stand a
chance. So, he issued a contract to unite the two. This was titled "The Pact of Steel". It stated that
both Germany and Italy would be there for each other, military wise or otherwise, and eventually,
help each other conquer the rest of the

Benito Mussolini, the late dictator of Italy, was nicknamed IL Duce which translates to "the leader".
During Mussolini's reign as dictator over Italy, he aimed to return the country to its former glory.
Benito Mussolini's doctrine of Fascism influenced his economic and political decisions concerning

Fascism favors "individuals and generals bound together by a moral law....founded on duty...." The
Fascist Party believed that life "must be lived for oneself but above all for others." The belief that a
higher personality who is the most honest and moral should represent the nation is another
component of Fascism. Mussolini believed that "a multitude unified by an idea and imbued with the
will to live, the will to power, self–consciousness, personality" is the ideal nation. Fascism is a
religious concept because this doctrines states that man has a part of a "spiritual society." This
concept not only involves the government, but also individual thoughts. Fascism supports the theory
that in history a man is a man only through the spiritual process that he contributes to as a
constituent of the nation (Mussolini, 2). When Mussolini came into power, as a dictator, he made
many political decisions that were influenced by his theory of Fascism. Mussolini permitted the
government to suspend media that slandered the Church, government, or the state. Sawdust Caesar,
as he was also known as during his rule, created the OVRA which was a secret police force. The
OVRA was established so that the officers would keep a vigil for individuals who may not be
following political and governmental policies. He took away the rights of Italian citizens such as
their freedom of speech, suffrage, and their right to criticize the government. Mussolini had a "thirst

A crucial part of the testimony is withheld from the excerpt, and possibly the full deposition: the

through Delano suspicions after he goes on board to help them with replenishing their food and
water. He notices that Cereno is uncharacteristically passive for a captain, that there are no officers

He attributes his suspicions to Benito Cereno as a white man of the "shrewder race" (65). Once

Why did they revolt? What were their living conditions on the ship? What happened to the
negresses to make them use "their utmost influence to have the deponent made away with" (99)?
These statements also raise the question of process: how were these people questioned or
interrogated? During the battle with the Bachelor's Delight, "nearly a score of the Negroes were
killed . . . many were mangled; their wounds . . . resembling . . . the poled scythes of the
Highlanders" (91). Were their wounds treated? What were the conditions of their prisons? Were they
chalked? Were they tortured? Did the tribunal sentence the enslaved people with incomplete
information? Cereno's testimonial extract, combined with Delano's third–person limited narration,
does not offer the complete story. Instead, Cereno and Delano's narratives are used to build the case
against the enslaved people and maintain the colonialist's position of power. In other words, the
cultural narrative and the official archival documents are missing the voices of the population who
planned and instigated the revolt. Melville's narrative strategy forces the reader to see these gaps in
Delano's narrative and the tribunal's deposition, gaps that Michel–Rolph Trouillot calls absences or
silences. In Silencing the Past: Power and the Production of History (1995), Trouillot writes that
"presences and absences embodied in sources (artifacts and bodies that turn and event into a fact) or
archives (facts collected, thematized, and processed as documents and monuments) are neither
neutral or natural. They are created" (48). He goes on to say that "the very mechanisms that make
any historical recording possible also ensure that historical facts are not created equal" (49). In other
words, the silences in Cereno's deposition are entered into the archive strategically in order to
maintain the dominant legal and socioeconomic institutions of colonial power. The

Benito Mussolini's Ambiguity Of Fascism
Fascism such as that displayed in post–World War 1 Italy was in many ways a contradictory
ideology; anti–modernism contrasted with technological obsession and anti–democratic views
paired with capitalism. Despite this ambiguity of the fascist ideology, one clear characteristic among
almost all fascists throughout history has been a heavy focus on militarism – an aspect of

therefore be limited to those of enforcing order and keeping the peace, as the liberal doctrine had it.
It is no mere mechanical device for defining the sphere within which the individual may duly

a discipline of the whole person; it permeates the will no less than the intellect. It stands for a
principle which becomes the central motive of man as a member of civilized society, sinking deep

Dictator Essay : Benito Mussolini
Dictator Essay: Benito Mussolini The dictionary defines a tyrant as a cruel or obsessive ruler. Who
could be so evil as to act in such a way? One example is Benito Mussolini. Benito Mussolini was an
inhumane and heartless ruler of Italy. He abused his power as leader, using terror and intimidation to
get what he wanted. He was a dictator with a great ego, which allowed him to be a fascist who
massacred nearly a million people. As a child, Benito Mussolini had an affinity for violence and
maliciousness. He attended a Catholic school, but at the age of 10, he was expelled for stabbing a
classmate in the arm. Mussolini's violence continued: he got expelled from his next school, once
again, for stabbing a classmate. The stabbings continued, as Mussolini openly admitted to knifing
his girlfriend in the arm. The violence did not end there: within his local church, Benito Mussolini
would pinch others so hard that they would begin to sob. However, even as a child, Mussolini was
born to be a leader. He would inspire others in violence, often leading gangs of boys to raid the local
farmsteads. As Mussolini grew up, he believed that a community and state needed to be run in a
similar way as the Roman Empire. Based on this thought, Mussolini decided that he wanted to
become a modern day Caesar. It is believed that Mussolini grew to become a ruler of absolute power
because he loved making everyone feel lower than him. In order to gain this power, Mussolini
formed his very own Fascist Party with the support of unemployed war veterans. Mussolini then
took action, with the help of his supporters, "The Blackshirts", by terrorising his political opponents.
Soon enough, the Blackshirts had been asked to join the coalition government. By then, Mussolini's
power was growing so much so that he ruined the relatively new country (which had previously
been separate states) known as Italy. Mussolini had stripped Italy of its freedom of press and
freedom of speech. He had replaced any freedom and independence that this country had and
replaced it with fear and hate. In 1922, King Victor Emmanuel then invited Mussolini to form a
government after him and The Blackshirts had marched on Rome. At this point, Mussolini had
begun to

He had censorship over; the press, communication and the military. Mussolini was aware that not all
journalists were pro–fascism, so he had to find a way to prevent outbursts from them. The creation
of Ordine dei Giornalisti made sure that everything that was published for the public did not in any
way contradict Mussolini. He made sure that certain things were published to distract the people of
Italy while he went about his fascist ideas. Marc'Aurelio was famously known to poke fun of
Mussolini in his work. He was courageous enough to write an article about Giacomo Matteotti, who
was murdered by the fascist part, showing the public that he would not be restrained. Even though
he challenged Mussolini, his army never executed Marc'Aurelio letting him to continue his comedic
work. Mussolini made it difficult for anyone to receive hidden messages or phone calls everything
was monitored. Most letters that were sent were read to see if there was any hidden communication
going on. This method would apply to phone calls as well, so people had no way of speaking of
unscrupulous ideas that were not considered fascist. The people had no way of planning to revolt
against Mussolini. There were Black Shirt members everywhere, so they could not speak freely in
public or they would be executed or imprisoned. Mussolini even had censorship over the military,

undeveloped girls would be taught how to supply Italy with more children to keep the population

all the children he wanted; however, he had to adjust the adults to keep his colony working properly.
He set out to aid those in need starting with the working class. Mussolini knew that his violent
techniques would only get a percentage of alliances; likewise, he had to gain some votes by
assisting the lower class. Mussolini himself suggests an increase in pay for some of the factory
worker so they would not only see him as a giving leader but as a powerful ruler. However the
increase in pay was nothing but a lie, Italy's economy had not been well off since their participation
in World War I. Mussolini could not increase the pay for the low class, but he was willing to be
economical with the truth, so he could obtain the votes he desperately needed to keep his position in

moving smoothly, even though he despised the Catholics. Due to the vast amount of catholic groups
Mussolini knew he had to please the public. He knew that fear would only get him so far, and

where an event was held where Fascists working with Mussolini seized control of the government
and announced their ruling by parading through Rome. Luigi Facta–their previous Prime Minister–
tried to take control of Rome, but Victor Emmanuel III did not sign the order, resulting in their army
terminating any potential threatening Fascists before they attacked them. In 1922, he became the
youngest Italian Prime Minister in history and created a law that enabled Fascists to hold the most
of authority within the government. From there, Mussolini implemented many more laws and
changes, one of which including the Ceka, which was a group of professional gangsters hired by
Mussolini himself to scare the Italian citizens into voting for Fascists during the elections. He held a

In the beginning of Herman Melville's "Benito Cereno", we were introduced with the character of
Captain Amasa Delano. Delano was described as person with "singularly undistrustful good nature,
not liable, except on extraordinary and repeated incentives, and hardly then, to indulge in personal
alarms" (35). The description of Captain Delano implies that he is a good–natured person with an
open hearted mind. Even though, Delano seems like a clever and experienced captain; during the
events of the story he appears as a person who is naive to his surroundings. In my research I will try
to answer questions regarding why Delano was unaware of the act that Babo and the rest of the
slaves were playing. Delano is constantly exposed to the clues left to him by Benito Cereno and his
sailors; but he chooses to ignore all of them and only sees the best possible image of the slaves.

The most notable clue was on the relationship between Cereno and Babo, which was not of a master
and his slave; but was of a soldier and his prisoner. Delano did not suspect the weird relationship
between the two but thought of it as an affectionate relationship. "Captain Delano could not but
bethink him of the beauty of that relationship" (45). Delano was not only pleased by Babo's actions
towards Cereno; but he also offered to purchase him and make him his servant. "I should like to
have your man here myself what will you take for him?" (58). If someone would assume that the
relationship between Cereno and Babo was innocent and classify it as normal relationship; then it
would be normal to choose to ignore it but it is not normal to also ignore the sailor's weird
behaviors. Ignoring these behaviors as well changes this decision from a normal good–hearted

Benito Mussolini, although his name is strikingly similar to a form of pasta, he is not, in fact, the

This can be partly attributed to the story being told in the perspective of Delano, but Melville

syndicalism. Mussolini continued to write for Socialist newspapers such as Avanti and rose through
the ranks to become a prominent leader in the Italian Socialist Party after returning to Italy and

Mussolini's expulsion from the Socialist Party marked a drastic change in Mussolini's public

Shortly after the initiation of World War I, on August 2nd, 1914, Italy declared neutrality, a
sentiment which most members of Il Partito Socialista Italiano or the Italian Socialist Party shared.
William Welk (1938, 7–9), observes that in this conflict, Mussolini made his first divergence from
the socialist party, repudiating the stance of the PSI, by speaking openly in favor of intervention.
Hereafter, Mussolini established himself as an incendiary figure in favor of the interventionist
objective. This ultimately led to his expulsion from the party in November of 1914, as well as being
relieved of his role as editor of Avanti. He then started his own paper Il Popolo d'Italia and

Benito Cereno Analysis
In Herman Melville's grey novella, "Benito Cereno", Captain Amasa Delano observers, what
appears to be, a distressed Spanish slave ship navigating into the harbor of St. Maria. Disregarding
the opposition from his crew, Captain Delano leaves his ship, Bachelor's Delight, and approaches
the stranger vessel, San Dominick, via a whaleboat. In addition to offering water and provisions to
the vessel in distress, Captain Delano encounters–who seems to be in command of the vessel–Don
Benito Cereno, and his "faithful" negro servant Babo. Throughout the novella, Captain Delano
witnesses many suspicious behaviors from Benito Cereno, Babo, and the other slaves on board.
Although Captain Delano has mixed feelings about Benito Cereno, in which he often views him as a
"paper captain" who has "little of command but the name", Captain Delano fails to latch onto his
intuition of who is truly in command of the ship until it's almost too late. Despite the many subtle
clues that hints at the notion of Melville spinning a web of deceit in Benito Cereno, the most
revealing clue that best exemplifies this is when Benito Cereno leaps into Captain Delano's
whaleboat while Babo chases after them, and attempts to stab his beloved "master"–Benito Cereno.
In what seems to be an emotional ending to the novella, Benito Cereno bids his emotional adieus to
Captain Delano while holding his hand; however, after Captain Delano and his crew is settled in
their boat and the bowsman pushes the whaleboat off of the San Dominick, Benito Cereno suddenly
springs into Captain Delano's whaleboat and is then swam after by three Spanish sailors who
attempt to climb on board. Still unsure on what to make of the situation, Captain Delano spots Babo
with a dagger in his hand, and believes that his intent is to stab him. With this in mind, Captain
Delano flings the boarded Spaniards aside and grapples the dagger that is aimed at his heart away
from Babo. Although there were many clues that hints at Melville spinning a web of deceit, this
very clue in the text unpacks the novella as a whole:"Glancing down at his feet, Captain Delano saw
the freed hand of the servant aiming with a second dagger–a small one, before concealed in his

"My objective is simple. I want to make Italy great, respected and feared," (UXL Biographies 1).
This was a quote from one of the most famous dictators in Italy, Benito Mussolini. Before World
War One, Mussolini was director of the Avanti, a socialist newspaper in Milan, but he began to
disagree with socialists so he broke ties and joined the military, reaching the rank of corporal. After
he was discharged from the army, he created the fascist party and worked towards dismantling all
socialist institutions (UXL Biographies 1). Mussolini was a powerful public speaker and delivered
speeches mainly about how great he would make Italy. This allowed him to gain the public's trust,
leading to him becoming Prime Minister and later the dictator of Italy (UXL Biographies 1). In
April 1945, Mussolini and his mistress were fleeing anti–fascist partisans disguised as German
soldiers. When they were crossing the Swiss border, him and his mistress were captured by partisans
and the next day were shot and killed. (Klein 1). The assassination of Benito Mussolini was justified
because of he adopted Nazi ideals about Jews and he ultimately initiated the demise of his country
and followers. Despite this many believe that Mussolini actually helped Italy. First and foremost,
Mussolini was extremely anti–semitic. His mistress recorded a remark by him in which he said

Support for Fascism skyrocketed after the events at Versailles unfolded and Orlando proved to be an

was mammoth and they had seemingly endless tactics. Along with the strategies of the army came
their bounty of resources as a result of their prime European location. They were the powerhouse of
the world. They were unstoppable. The Renaissance, a time of emerging art styles and forms,
originated from northern Italy. Everyone across Europe participated in the arts craze. Aspiring
painters, sculptors, and architects came to Italy to study artists' work and then brought what they
learned back to their home countries. The years after the Renaissance were not Italy's best, as
England and the United States consistently beat out Italy in rankings of influence. Under Orlando's

Ambiguity In Benito Cereno
Herman Melville's short story "Benito Cereno" or "The Other Moby Dick" as Greg Grandin, a
contributing writer for Mother Jones magazine, refers to it, is a fictionalized account of an encounter
that an American ship captain and seal killer/trader by the name of Amasa Delano had in February
1805 in the South Pacific (Grandin). Delano, who was "quick to flog his men," was "the sort of
American sea captain Melville knew well and hated" (Stuckey 271). Delano chronicled his
encounter in "A Narrative of Voyages and Travels, in the northern and southern hemispheres:
comprising three voyages around the world, together with a voyage of survey and discovery in the
Pacific Ocean and Oriental Islands" (Boston, 1817). Arguably one of Melville's best works, "Benito
Cereno" in all of its ambiguity is more than a fictionalized account of a seafaring vessel and its less
than admirable captain, it is a historical reflection of what was happening in the world during the
time it was written. Since its publication, "Benito Cereno" critics and casual readers alike have
struggled to find clarity in Herman Melville's chronicle of the slave ship "San Dominick" in his
short story "Benito Cereno." In an attempt to disaggregate Melville's story, scholars have focused on
various elements of the elusive tale. Articles have been written on a range of topics that run the
gamut from the symbolic nature of the ships to Melville's purpose and intent in writing the story. To
wit, Valenti asserts that

Advantages And Achievements Of Benito Mussolini

  • 1. Advantages And Achievements Of Benito Mussolini Benito Mussolini, the great leader of the Italian people. He was aggressive, loved, and praised. He was the dictator of dictators to the people of Italy. Benito Mussolini had achieved many things during his rule in Italy. Yet, one of his most important achievements would have been the ability to stay in power and the creation of a cult through deception and propaganda. Benito Mussolini is most famous for being the dictator–like prime minister for Italy during World War II. He was able to keep his position of power through the deception of his people. Mussolini would broadcast victories (even small ones) and quiet down the losses. (122 and 170) This would give an impression to the people that Mussolini was doing the things he promised and ... His father was a blacksmith and a socialist who spent most of his money on politics and mistresses. His mother Rosa Maltoni was a school teacher who provided the family resources. Mussolini was an ardent socialist as a youth. He then got expelled for his believe in WW1. As Mussolini grew up he had been kicked out of several schools for defying the school's authority. As he became older he got his teaching credential and worked as a schoolmaster, like his mother. Mussolini moved to switzerland to promote socialism but authorities found out and got him dismissed from the party. For example (by Britannica article), The new york times in 1923 quoted saying that, "Mussolini is a latin (Teddy) Roosevelt who first acts and then inquires if it's legal. He has been of great service to italy." (magazine writer Isaac Marcosson). • 3. Benito Cereno In her article entitled "Black Masks: Melville's Benito Cereno", Jean Fagan Yellin says that "when Benito Cereno, Herman Melville's tale of slave revolt, appeared in 1855, it made use of Negro stereotypes already standard in American fiction" (Yellin 678). Captain Amasa Delano is characterized as the typical Yankee man. Yellin elaborates on this by analyzing his self–important, authoritarian persona, observing that he is "investigating the strange ship, self–righteously expounding the doctrine of work, officiously planning to manage affairs on the San Dominick, proudly resentful of any implied social slight, and in no way averse, after helping the distressed Spaniard, to totting up the price he expects to be paired for his trouble. He smugly believes himself the peculiarly favored child of Providence" (Yellin 682). When we view him in contrast with Cereno, an aristocratic European, Delano can now be assessed as representation of the idealistic "New World Man" or the typical American white man, meaning he is seen as "democratic, compassionate, generous, capable of decisive action, although blind to evil and unable to learn from his experience" (Yellin 682). This is best exemplified in his views of the black slaves on the San Dominick. His assumptive thinking is prevalent in the story because throughout his initial exploration of the San Dominick, he buys into the illusion that what is happening upon the ship is not deviating from reality. The presentation of black slaves as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He would control the people, no one can argue with the government. Benito is basically known for fascism. Benito Mussolini Research Paper Benito Mussolini was the first fascist dictator in history, however many historians question his ideologies that helped him rise to power and become the most powerful man in Italy. Mussolini's use of the Blackshirts was effective, to a great extent that the "authority was enforced by the use of the Blackshirts (1)." Above all many people considered him as the "only man capable of restoring order (2)", when Italy was slipping into political chaos moreover he promised to bring back the glory days of Italy in Ancient Rome. Mussolini heavily relied on the Blackshirts to help him restore order, become the Duce and to also stay in power and fight the opposition. • 6. Ghosts And Skeletons By Benito Cereno Ghostly representations of "the other" imagine a social evil that has not been put to rest. These images reoccur in the Western canon, marking the persistence of slavery long after its abolition. Haunting, ghosts and skeletons in Benito Cereno act as a vehicle through which the suppressed return to the stage with a message. The ghosts carry with them all that the imperialists wanted to control, including emotions, and more precisely, the emotions of the oppressed. I argue that ghosts and skeletons comprise an area of tension in which the appearance of the "other" reveals that the dominant party's control is incomplete. Yet, the presence is merely ghostly due to the constant policing and lack of respect for the Other. These ghosts also break through the boundaries of the dominant culture's paradigms and identities (Harpham 17), signaling potential political crisis. This text signals the fear of the retaliation of the Other through ghostly representations by projecting on to the other, their own identities of brutality and irrationality. "Benito Cereno" by Herman Melville overturns the racist images of the colonized by relocating evil in the order of slavery. Hauntings carry the perspectives and powers of the slaves by preserving the dead amidst the living and the past amidst the present, they muddle up the concept of time and therefore defy the Western dream of complete control. • 7. Benito Mussolini Changes How Mussolini Changed Rome By Luke Hornby December 23, 2016 This paper examines changes to Rome during Mussolini's rise and rule of Italy from 1922–1945. Mussolini saw himself as the next great Caesar, and wanted the power of his radical political ideology, Fascism, to be projected throughout the city. As Mussolini's changed from the leader of an empire city to a puppet of Nazi Germany, so did the city. Mussolini states his love of Rome in his autobiography, My Rise and Fall: "I have given particular attention to the Capital. Rome is a universal city, dear to the hearts of Italians and the whole world" . Mussolini's My Rise and Fall is a two–volume book. Mussolini wanted to remember the parts of Rome's past that were in accordance with fascist thought and prosperity while destroying areas that were representative of negative times from the fascist point of view . As a result, many areas not in line with his ideas, including areas of the ***were destroyed. Mussolini also wanted to create space in Rome, as to make the city as receptive to aesthetics as possible. Any impurities that lied within the city were destroyed or moved outside or Rome . To complete making Rome the ultimate fascist tourist city, he ensured that the censored media did not publish any news that would convince tourist to stay from Italy . The Capitoline Hill, Piazza Venizia, and the Boulevard Via del fiori all saw major changes, as did many other places in Rome . Benito Mussolini, upon being removed from the Socialist Party for advocating Italy 's participation in battle, organized the Fascist Party following the war. Mussolini believes that "the foundation of Fascism is the conception of the State, its character, its duty, and its aim." While the state is responsible for organizing the nation, there is a sufficient amount of liberty for the individual. Under Fascism, an Empire is able to lead other nations without conquering them. It resembles Social Darwinism closely. The idea of the survival of the fittest means that the strong nation comes out ahead, and Mussolini promises to become the strongest. • 10. Philosophy Of Benito Mussolini Benito Mussolini was one of the most influential leaders of the twentieth century. He led a fringe political party to the creation of a new order in the country of Italy after World War One; seemingly taking and implementing notes from teaching of Niccoló Machiavelli's The Prince in his early rule as "Il Duce". However, after his rise to power he stumbled and went against many of the things Machiavelli taught. Mussolini's triumphs as the leader of Italy must be looked at with admiration due to the fact of how well he follows Machiavelli's teachings in his early rule. Mussolini used virtue instead of fortune to get to his political standings. In 1919, Benito created the "Black Shirts" which he used to terrorize political opponents who went against his beliefs (biography.com). He capitalized on the discontent of the Italian people due to the Treaty of Versailles instead of relying solely on his socioeconomic standings to get power. He followed the teaching of Machiavelli, "Men like these who become princes through the exercise of their own virtu find it hard to achieve that status but easy to keep it" (Machiavelli, 11). He took the harder path of earning the people's trust through words and actions rather than money and wealth. He was a private citizen who relied on his ability to lead people instead of only throwing money at problems to him in a chair of political significance. The initial coming of the redstones in 1928 was met with a fearful curiosity at first but ultimately something potentially harmful across the seas, Italy had far more important matters at hand such as forging an alliance with the Vatican, recognizing it as a sovereign state and Mussolini with his family receiving an official blessing from the Pope. It officially declared itself a totalitarian state in 1935 and using propaganda to depose the king through plebiscite thus making Benito Mussolini the sole leader. Wanting to increase its prestige on the national stage it successfully and swiftly invaded Ethiopia in 1935 making it a subservient colony. Other nations viewed this as quite irresponsible as the redstone crisis was a far greater concerns that needed the cooperation of all Great Powers. Of course Italy didn't care. Red Tide Following the days of the USSR's attack on Poland, on October 5th Italy declared war on it following France's and the UK's example. Initially it sent a large numbers of forces to support the rearming German and Hungarian troops before the Soviets reached their borders but it proved futile as the Soviet spearheaded themselves all the way to Paris by December. The first decided to create a government in which he believed everyone was created to serve the nation. He was very successful, so the second copied his regime tactics, but just kicked up the ruthlessness. Therefore, the second ruler overshadowed the first, and this is where the real story begins. This novel is filled with so much symbolism that it makes it very difficult to get a clear and succinct analysis of the novel. As one reads this novel different themes and symbols become apparent. One such theme is good vs. evil. Melville utilizes color symbolism to signify that black was completely evil and white was pure good. The issue of good vs. evil is present throughout "Benito Cereno", and can be seen through the actions of Captain Delano and the Blacks on board San Dominick. It is also seen through the writing of Herman Melville himself. Captain Amasa Delano, the captain of a Massachusetts whaling ship, is the complete embodiment ... Though he was a strong leader with a lot of persistence, his works and contributions in WWII weren't as successful as he would have hoped. Even though he had the almighty Adolfo Hitler on his side, he still somehow succeeded to turn his entire country against him in the end and lose one of the most well known wars in all of history. The Pact of Steel: How it All Started Mussolini and his country were an independent cause. Mussolini was a fascist who didn't want handouts from other countries or people. Hitler knew this, and began to persuade him into joining forces with Germany. Mussolini objected at first; he despised Hitler, jealous of his success and eager to achieve it with Italy alone. But Hitler persisted, talking highly of Mussolini and his troops everywhere, about his invasions of Ethiopia and all of his successes as a dictator and general. This made Mussolini feel good, and eventually, it swooned him over to Hitler's plea for Italy to work with Germany. Mussolini, in the end, believed this would be a good idea, because if the strong countries– Italy and Germany– took on the rest of the weaker countries, they wouldn't stand a chance. So, he issued a contract to unite the two. This was titled "The Pact of Steel". It stated that both Germany and Italy would be there for each other, military wise or otherwise, and eventually, help each other conquer the rest of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He notices that Cereno is uncharacteristically passive for a captain, that there are no officers on board, and that the slaves move freely on the ship and behave inappropriately towards the crew. What happened to the negresses to make them use "their utmost influence to have the deponent made away with" (99)? These statements also raise the question of process: how were these people questioned or interrogated? During the battle with the Bachelor's Delight, "nearly a score of the Negroes were killed . . . many were mangled; their wounds . . . resembling . . . the poled scythes of the Highlanders" (91). Were their wounds treated? What were the conditions of their prisons? Were they chalked? Were they tortured? Did the tribunal sentence the enslaved people with incomplete information? Cereno's testimonial extract, combined with Delano's third–person limited narration, does not offer the complete story. Instead, Cereno and Delano's narratives are used to build the case against the enslaved people and maintain the colonialist's position of power. In other words, the cultural narrative and the official archival documents are missing the voices of the population who planned and instigated the revolt. Melville's narrative strategy forces the reader to see these gaps in Delano's narrative and the tribunal's deposition, gaps that Michel–Rolph Trouillot calls absences or silences. In Silencing the Past: Power and the Production of History (1995), Trouillot writes that "presences and absences embodied in sources (artifacts and bodies that turn and event into a fact) or archives (facts collected, thematized, and processed as documents and monuments) are neither neutral or natural. They are created" (48). He goes on to say that "the very mechanisms that make any historical recording possible also ensure that historical facts are not created equal" (49). • 22. Dictator Essay : Benito Mussolini Dictator Essay: Benito Mussolini The dictionary defines a tyrant as a cruel or obsessive ruler. Who could be so evil as to act in such a way? One example is Benito Mussolini. Benito Mussolini was an inhumane and heartless ruler of Italy. He abused his power as leader, using terror and intimidation to get what he wanted. He was a dictator with a great ego, which allowed him to be a fascist who massacred nearly a million people. As a child, Benito Mussolini had an affinity for violence and maliciousness. He attended a Catholic school, but at the age of 10, he was expelled for stabbing a classmate in the arm. Mussolini's violence continued: he got expelled from his next school, once again, for stabbing a classmate. The stabbings continued, as Mussolini openly admitted to knifing his girlfriend in the arm. The violence did not end there: within his local church, Benito Mussolini would pinch others so hard that they would begin to sob. However, even as a child, Mussolini was born to be a leader. He would inspire others in violence, often leading gangs of boys to raid the local farmsteads. As Mussolini grew up, he believed that a community and state needed to be run in a similar way as the Roman Empire. Based on this thought, Mussolini decided that he wanted to become a modern day Caesar. It is believed that Mussolini grew to become a ruler of absolute power because he loved making everyone feel lower than him. In order to gain this power, Mussolini formed his very own Fascist Party with the support of unemployed war veterans. Mussolini then took action, with the help of his supporters, "The Blackshirts", by terrorising his political opponents. Soon enough, the Blackshirts had been asked to join the coalition government. By then, Mussolini's power was growing so much so that he ruined the relatively new country (which had previously been separate states) known as Italy. Mussolini had stripped Italy of its freedom of press and freedom of speech. He had replaced any freedom and independence that this country had and replaced it with fear and hate. In 1922, King Victor Emmanuel then invited Mussolini to form a government after him and The Blackshirts had marched on Rome. At this point, Mussolini had begun to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 28. Benito Cerreno Essay In the beginning of Herman Melville's "Benito Cereno", we were introduced with the character of Captain Amasa Delano. Delano was described as person with "singularly undistrustful good nature, not liable, except on extraordinary and repeated incentives, and hardly then, to indulge in personal alarms" (35). The description of Captain Delano implies that he is a good–natured person with an open hearted mind. Even though, Delano seems like a clever and experienced captain; during the events of the story he appears as a person who is naive to his surroundings. In my research I will try to answer questions regarding why Delano was unaware of the act that Babo and the rest of the slaves were playing. Delano is constantly exposed to the clues left to him by Benito Cereno and his sailors; but he chooses to ignore all of them and only sees the best possible image of the slaves. Upon ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most notable clue was on the relationship between Cereno and Babo, which was not of a master and his slave; but was of a soldier and his prisoner. Delano did not suspect the weird relationship between the two but thought of it as an affectionate relationship. "Captain Delano could not but bethink him of the beauty of that relationship" (45). Delano was not only pleased by Babo's actions towards Cereno; but he also offered to purchase him and make him his servant. "I should like to have your man here myself what will you take for him?" (58). If someone would assume that the relationship between Cereno and Babo was innocent and classify it as normal relationship; then it would be normal to choose to ignore it but it is not normal to also ignore the sailor's weird behaviors. Ignoring these behaviors as well changes this decision from a normal good–hearted decision to a naive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. Themes In Benito Cereno Henry Melville's Benito Cereno starts by introducing Amasa Delano, the captain of the ship Bachelor's Delight, who is stopping at a deserted island for temporary refuge. On the second day of his visit one of his crewmates tells Delano that a ship is headed toward the island. Delano sees that the ship's called San Dominick, and under the name it says "Seguid vuestro jefe", which means "follow your leader." Amasa Delano is enticed to go to the ship to see what's happening; he meets Benito Cereno, a crazy looking captain, and his "slave" Babo, a black servant. Delano learns that Cereno and his men had left Buenos Ayres to got to Lima almost six weeks ago, and that the ship is filled with calm black slaves that are walking around in the boat. Delano ... This ultimately gives Melville more control in how he tells by the story by being able to share what Delano is thinking to himself. These internal thoughts can be found throughout the story, specifically when when Delano is looking at the suspicious behavior happening on the ship, " There is something in the negro which, in a peculiar way, fits him for avocations about one's person. Most negroes are natural valets and hair–dressers; taking to the comb and brush congenially as to the castinets, and flourishing them apparently with almost equal satisfaction. But a certain easy cheerfulness, harmonious in every glance and gesture; as though God had set the whole negro to some pleasant tune"(page 200). Mussolini continued to write for Socialist newspapers such as Avanti and rose through the ranks to become a prominent leader in the Italian Socialist Party after returning to Italy and spending two years as a soldier, followed by a few years teaching. However, World War I and Mussolini's expulsion from the Socialist Party marked a drastic change in Mussolini's public political stance. Shortly after the initiation of World War I, on August 2nd, 1914, Italy declared neutrality, a sentiment which most members of Il Partito Socialista Italiano or the Italian Socialist Party shared. William Welk (1938, 7–9), observes that in this conflict, Mussolini made his first divergence from the socialist party, repudiating the stance of the PSI, by speaking openly in favor of intervention. Hereafter, Mussolini established himself as an incendiary figure in favor of the interventionist objective. This ultimately led to his expulsion from the party in November of 1914, as well as being relieved of his role as editor of Avanti. He then started his own paper Il Popolo d'Italia and continued to exert his influence in Italian media, this time outside of the bounds of the Socialist Party. He then turned this movement into a legitimate party called the Fascist Party. By doing this he gained more credit and obtained more followers and supporters. Fascism is this overwhelming idea of patriotism throughout a country. Italy had been going through a stage where many of its people were focused on materialistic things and not on the pure Italian culture. Mussolini changed Italy for the better at first, but then he twisted the idea of fascism into something it's not. • 36. Benito Cereno Analysis In Herman Melville's grey novella, "Benito Cereno", Captain Amasa Delano observers, what appears to be, a distressed Spanish slave ship navigating into the harbor of St. Maria. Disregarding the opposition from his crew, Captain Delano leaves his ship, Bachelor's Delight, and approaches the stranger vessel, San Dominick, via a whaleboat. In addition to offering water and provisions to the vessel in distress, Captain Delano encounters–who seems to be in command of the vessel–Don Benito Cereno, and his "faithful" negro servant Babo. Throughout the novella, Captain Delano witnesses many suspicious behaviors from Benito Cereno, Babo, and the other slaves on board. Although Captain Delano has mixed feelings about Benito Cereno, in which he often views him as a "paper captain" who has "little of command but the name", Captain Delano fails to latch onto his intuition of who is truly in command of the ship until it's almost too late. Despite the many subtle clues that hints at the notion of Melville spinning a web of deceit in Benito Cereno, the most revealing clue that best exemplifies this is when Benito Cereno leaps into Captain Delano's whaleboat while Babo chases after them, and attempts to stab his beloved "master"–Benito Cereno. In what seems to be an emotional ending to the novella, Benito Cereno bids his emotional adieus to Captain Delano while holding his hand; however, after Captain Delano and his crew is settled in their boat and the bowsman pushes the whaleboat off of the San Dominick, Benito Cereno suddenly springs into Captain Delano's whaleboat and is then swam after by three Spanish sailors who attempt to climb on board. Still unsure on what to make of the situation, Captain Delano spots Babo with a dagger in his hand, and believes that his intent is to stab him. With this in mind, Captain Delano flings the boarded Spaniards aside and grapples the dagger that is aimed at his heart away from Babo. Although there were many clues that hints at Melville spinning a web of deceit, this very clue in the text unpacks the novella as a whole:"Glancing down at his feet, Captain Delano saw the freed hand of the servant aiming with a second dagger–a small one, before concealed in his wool–with this he was ... • 37. Benito Mussolini Justified "My objective is simple. I want to make Italy great, respected and feared," (UXL Biographies 1). This was a quote from one of the most famous dictators in Italy, Benito Mussolini. Before World War One, Mussolini was director of the Avanti, a socialist newspaper in Milan, but he began to disagree with socialists so he broke ties and joined the military, reaching the rank of corporal. After he was discharged from the army, he created the fascist party and worked towards dismantling all socialist institutions (UXL Biographies 1). Mussolini was a powerful public speaker and delivered speeches mainly about how great he would make Italy. This allowed him to gain the public's trust, leading to him becoming Prime Minister and later the dictator of Italy (UXL Biographies 1). In April 1945, Mussolini and his mistress were fleeing anti–fascist partisans disguised as German soldiers. When they were crossing the Swiss border, him and his mistress were captured by partisans and the next day were shot and killed. (Klein 1). The assassination of Benito Mussolini was justified because of he adopted Nazi ideals about Jews and he ultimately initiated the demise of his country and followers. Despite this many believe that Mussolini actually helped Italy. First and foremost, Mussolini was extremely anti–semitic. His mistress recorded a remark by him in which he said "These disgusting Jews, I must destroy them all," (The Economist 34). This shows that Mussolini was very against the Jewish ... • 39. Ambiguity In Benito Cereno Herman Melville's short story "Benito Cereno" or "The Other Moby Dick" as Greg Grandin, a contributing writer for Mother Jones magazine, refers to it, is a fictionalized account of an encounter that an American ship captain and seal killer/trader by the name of Amasa Delano had in February 1805 in the South Pacific (Grandin). Delano, who was "quick to flog his men," was "the sort of American sea captain Melville knew well and hated" (Stuckey 271). Delano chronicled his encounter in "A Narrative of Voyages and Travels, in the northern and southern hemispheres: comprising three voyages around the world, together with a voyage of survey and discovery in the Pacific Ocean and Oriental Islands" (Boston, 1817). Arguably one of Melville's best works, "Benito Cereno" in all of its ambiguity is more than a fictionalized account of a seafaring vessel and its less than admirable captain, it is a historical reflection of what was happening in the world during the time it was written. Since its publication, "Benito Cereno" critics and casual readers alike have struggled to find clarity in Herman Melville's chronicle of the slave ship "San Dominick" in his short story "Benito Cereno." In an attempt to disaggregate Melville's story, scholars have focused on various elements of the elusive tale. Articles have been written on a range of topics that run the gamut from the symbolic nature of the ships to Melville's purpose and intent in writing the story. To wit, Valenti asserts that ...
