Popular music is an example of what cultural industries produce and also what Theodor Adorno criticizes in his essay, On Popular Music. Theodor
Adorno is a German philosopher, socialist, and also a composer. He analyzes popular music with the perspective not only from music, but also from
the economic system based on Marx's idea. This paper first discusses his theory about popular music, including three important key terms and then
how he develops this theory based on Marxism. Further, this paper will also apply Adorno's theory to a Disney movie, Frozen in order to evaluate his
theory. By comparing popular music with serious music, Theodor Adorno makes a theory that criticizes popular music, suggesting three key words to
describe characteristics of popular music: standardization, pseudo–individualization, and social cement. In other words, because of these
characteristics, Adorno thinks popular music as inferior to serious music. The first and the primary characteristic of popular music, standardization
means that popular music is assimilated to successful music in both structure and content (Adorno 73). As the example of the standardized structure, he

I will be using Bell Hook's book Feminism is for Everybody which is about the movement to end sexism to help understand why men feel the need
to degraded women in their music. Hook's talks about patriarchal power which is general structure in which men have power over women (male
domination). "Males as a group have and do benefit the most from patriarchy, from the assumption that they are superior to females and should rule
over us. But those benefits have come with a price. In return for all the goodies men receive from patriarchy, they are required to dominate women, to

Analysis
The artifacts I will be using are the songs "Superman" by Eminem and "Cyclone" by Baby Bash. These songs are a prime examples of male artist
using downgrading word towards women and creating an negative image of them. The first song I will analyze will be Eminem song "Superman".
The song relates to his history with women, the song begins with passionate lines describing eminem and a women "wanting" each other and "loving"
each other. Then in the next few lines the "superman" term is introduced. The Lyrics say "They call me superman, I'm here to rescue you."(Marshall).

The leaders of this genre were all white teenagers from poor southern backgrounds. The most iconic artist of Rockabilly was Elvis Presley who
moved from house to house, several times throughout his childhood. Other famous Rockabilly artists included Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Buddy
Holly, and Jerry Lee Lewis. They all grew up poor and managed to combine the two most popular forms of southern music, blues and country. In
1953, Sun Records, a declining R&B record label, ended up finding Elvis Presley who instantly became a star due to the fact that he was the first
white man who perfected singing the R&B genre. He soon gained a massive fanbase of teenage girls who tore apart his clothes after every concert.

In 1956, Jerry Lee Lewis, nicknamed "The Killer", joined Sun Records where he combined R&B with country on piano. At first he wasn't very
successful, but then he appeared on The Steve Allen Show on July 28, 1957 where he ended up kicking the piano stool into the audience while
shaking his hair and banging on the keys like a madman. After that, he ended up topping the charts with "Great Balls of Fire". Carl Perkins, whose
music was very similar to Elvis', was possibly the greatest Rockabilly guitarist of the time. Known for his hit, "Blue Suede Shoes", he almost
became as famous as Elvis. Though this all changed when he got into a car accident on March 22, 1956 where he broke his collarbone, thus putting
his career on hold. After this, Elvis recorded a popular version of "Blue Suede Shoes" and Perkins seemed to fade away, being more known for his

I hold improvising close to me, and use it as a technique for creating original songs, and turning cover songs into my own. When one improvises, they
make choices that are unique to them, which leads into the question of where ideas in improvising come from.
Singer–songwriter Matt Corby spoke about the idea that inspiration does not come from you, rather "it's something that you channel. Song writing,
being able to create something new, is a regurgitation of everything that you have experienced musically in your entire life. Your ideas [are] just a
product of what you know and what you place value upon musically or artistically". Though he is speaking more so about song writing, this
especially resonates in improvisation, as the process is even more free flowing and spontaneous than creating a song. In improvising, this concept of
"the body acting prior to thought" is key, however when taking part in free improvisation, it is often difficult to continue coming up with different
ideas and variation, and I feel I am often too similar and somewhat predictable in my improvising. A musician's "personal conventions [can become]
too familiar" and it is often necessary to "search for a wider spectrum of ideas." I wanted to put myself out of my comfort zone, in order to explore new
things, and was able to do so in the workshops.

Adorno's Critique Of Popular Music And Capitalism Analysis
Throughout history, music has been seen as a medium in which different people all over the world can relate. Adorno criticizes, however, that songs
that have the most "hits" on the top music charts or are most listened to, otherwise known as popular music, are being produced for and consumed by
the masses as a commodity. He identifies popular music as being a part of a culture used for capitalism, and that we as listeners, are falling into a trap
in which we believe songs have individuality and that we have the freedom to choose what we listen to. He argues that in reality these popular songs
are all standardized and made to seem different through various elements that are added. In this paper, I will display how Adorno's critique of popular
music being used for capitalism applies to the song,1–800–273–8255, by hip–hop and rap artist Logic, through its standardized elements in both its
content and marketing; however, I will argue that although it contains these elements, the audience is actively listening and responding to the song as it

'popular music charts' accurately depict what is considered to be popular? By thoroughly analyzing the methods of accessing the popularity of music,
Billboard Magazine uses in their top 25 dance/electronic songs for November 30th – December 7th, 2013 this paper aims to discover whether or not
popular music charts are the best implication of what is to be considered popular. The analysis will critically examine the contents of the chart in

Authenticity in popular music has been an area of discussion since Elvis (Moore 2002 as cited by Gunders 2013) and the meaning and subsequent

I agree to some extent with Adorno and Horkheimer's views on popular music and culture industry. I agree that popular music is indeed standardized
