Ergonomic Hazards Policy Paper
The purpose of the Ergonomics Hazards Policy is to prevent the occurrence of work–related
musculoskeletal disorders (MDS). According to OSHA, Ergonomic Hazards is referred to as any
injury due to risk factors at work, such as lifting heavy items, bending, reaching overhead, pushing
and pulling heavy loads, working in awkward body postures and performing the same or similar
tasks repetitively (OSHA, 2017). Training will be given to all new employees on basic MDS
information, and will be conducted by a qualified Healthcare Provider. Employees will be informed
of any MDS they may experience and the risk factors that can cause or aggravate them and how to

There are many issues present in the workplace that pose a threat to workplace safety. Some of these
include simple problems such as slipping hazards which include but are not limited to water, dust, or
oil on the floor; tripping hazards, which include but are not limited to walking areas that have
debris, have electrical cords across them or are uneven; and falling hazards, which include but are
not limited to ladders and lifts; that can cause more long term complications, such as wrist, arm or
back injuries. Back injuries are among one of the worst workplace injuries that occur due to
workplace issues that occur, especially in the nursing field.
WebMD (2017) explains:
The spine, or backbone, is made up of a column of 33 bones and tissue extending from the skull to
the pelvis. These bones, or vertebrae, enclose and protect a cylinder of nerve tissues known as the
spinal cord. Between each one of the vertebra is an intervertebral disk, or band of cartilage serving

If something is to happen to any of these vertebrae, intervertebral disks, band of cartilage, or the
nerves in the back due to a workplace accident, more issues arise.

This does not sound like it is that high, but the shoes are arranged on the shelves to where the
smaller sizes are on the top shelf and the larger sizes are on the bottom. Customers constantly
complain that the shoes need to be in the opposite order because it would make more sense and the
shorter people could reach their rightful sizes. The middle section consists of lower walls (about 3/5
the size of the left–most and right–most walls) in which there are two spate walls. This space is
considered the "kitchen" and is where most of the customers can sit and try on shoes. Then the
right–most walls are exactly the same as the left–most walls. The space in between each wall on the
left and right is four feet of space. In the middle section, the two walls are separated by 12 feet of
space. The four–foot spacing between the walls on the left and right are not ideal for the amount of

clear link between sitting for hours during the day, and colon, lung and endometrial cancer. Regular
exercise did not lower the risks, which were 66 percent higher for those who are typically

Paramedic license, I do not want to become a statistic and suffer from a back injury that so many
first responders suffer from these days. There are so many variables to staying healthy such as
eating right, staying fit, and learning proper mechanics for lifting heavy loads. When taking these
variables into account, how can someone in my profession improve the quality of our work

Office ergonomics works towards preventing work–related injuries including risk factors that pose a
threat to an individual's mental health. From my point of view, office ergonomics is an evaluation of
an office setting that takes into consideration the employees' physical, emotional, and social needs.
Does the employee feel isolated? Is there enough natural light? Are employees given adequate

were prevalent at this workstation and significant engineering and administrative controls are

Patient handling and movement tasks are physically demanding, generally performed under critical
conditions and often unpredictable in nature. Patients offer multiple challenges including variations
in size, physical disabilities, cognitive function, level of cooperation and fluctuations in condition.
As a given weight to be lifted, they are awkward packages, lack even weight distribution and have
been known to become combative during the lift process. Many patients/residents, especially
nursing home residents, are totally dependent on staff members to provide activities of daily living,
such as dressing, bathing, feeding, and toileting. Each of these activities involves multiple
interactions with handling or transferring of patients/residents and could result in employee injuries.

Ergonomics is concerned with the design of systems in which people carry out work. Its name
comes from the Greek words ergon which means "work" and monos which means "law". All work
systems consist of a human component and a machine component embedded in a local environment.
When designing any system where humans and machines work together to produce something, we
need to know about the characteristics of the people involved and be able to apply this knowledge to
the design. This activity is the fundamental function of ergonomics.
Ergonomics came about as a consequence of the design and operational problems presented by new
work systems which had evolved with the advance of technology. It owes its development to the
same historical processes, which gave rise to the to other work system disciplines such as industrial
engineering and occupational medicine.
The practice of ergonomics requires that knowledge about human anatomy, physiology, and
psychology be applied to the design of work systems. Particular emphasis is placed on the design of
the human – machine interface to ensure increased safety and usability of equipment and the
removal of harmful stressors.4

  • 1. Ergonomic Hazards Policy Paper The purpose of the Ergonomics Hazards Policy is to prevent the occurrence of work–related musculoskeletal disorders (MDS). According to OSHA, Ergonomic Hazards is referred to as any injury due to risk factors at work, such as lifting heavy items, bending, reaching overhead, pushing and pulling heavy loads, working in awkward body postures and performing the same or similar tasks repetitively (OSHA, 2017). Training will be given to all new employees on basic MDS information, and will be conducted by a qualified Healthcare Provider.
