How Nature Represents Social Groups in Media
1. How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
2. The Theme of Nature is Present
• The themes that have been used in the front cover and contents page relate to
nature and gives a sense of freedom (as seen by the pose of the model in the
contents page). This attracts groups that prefer aesthetically natural (the model
does not wear make up to promote a pure image despite the fierce facial
expression) appearances. In addition, to attracting audiences that prefer music in
its raw form, such as instrumental compared to electro. The theme is of nature is
emphasized in the background and the mise-en-scene of the model, this gives the
reader a subtle idea of what the artist centers on (in terms of music style) and
therefore this will attract a group that looks into the beauty of music created
through the interest of the artist rather than commercial music.
• Stereotypes such as the use of the colour green and brown and the location (being
Epping forest) conforms to the conventions of nature. The pose(s) of the model
also conforms to the expression of freedom (this links to the genre as indie in
definition is “independent”) as she raises her hands ups in the air and walks
confidently without following a specifically constricted path.
• Using the theme of nature, also allows the issue to address to a bigger
demographic as nature is relatable for many people and may mean different things
to different particular groups. Therefore, the use of nature is beneficial in this part
for including an unfocused range of people as the target audience.
3. Colours used attracts certain Genders
• The colours seen in my front cover and double page would stereotypically
attract females more than males. This is because, despite the neutral
colours (the skin colours to the colours eye-dropped colours from eg. the
forest background) the majority of the spectrum used is more feminine
due to the tones of the colours being softer. The front cover especially can
be seen to have pink (the button) and the model is a female. Therefore,
females would be more likely to pick the magazine up as they can find
similarity or equal aesthetic preferences are met. In the dps, the neon
colours reflected onto the model is a magenta or neon pink (on the walls)
which additionally would look more eye catching to females than to males.
• The models that I have used are also both females overall, so more
females can relate to the artists more than males would. In conclusion, my
magazines has targeted a females > males due to the several key points
(spoken of) which conform to what females tend to like and find eye
catching.
4. Language
• The language used when writing in the contents page as well as the
dps aims towards teen to (young) adults. Words such as ‘shook’ acts
as persuasive informal language which aims towards a younger age
group. However the overall language used can keep young adults
entertained while reading the text. The language is informative yet
also exciting, therefore a younger age group can be accommodated
for. While the sell lines written would attract more vivid older adult
groups who are interested in the information NDI can share.
• By using language that is not overly formal, the readers can connect
with the music magazine I have created. Allowing them to feel
comfortable with the content being presented as well as attracting
them to buy further issues. The language also helps to focus on a
leeway age group of 17 to 25 year olds as these ages would feel
attracted by the familiar language conventions or some slang or
phrasings.
5. Other details: Photo and Layout
• The images taken vary in shot. From an extreme close up (front cover), a
long shot (contents page) and a wide shot (double-page spread). From the
front cover, the extreme close up shot helps to focus on the expression.
The expression which shows confidence and fierce determination brings
out strength (in the artist) and at the same time promotes and inspires
female readers. The contents page also does the same as the pose (as
mentioned) gives readers an expression of relief and letting go of stress by
running into the nature (which surrounds the model).
• The layout I have in the dps gives the readers the chance to look at the
bigger picture (the main image and the model). The dps shows the artist’s
self-confidence (both in the pose she holds and her facial expression) and
would be proven to be admirable for both genders. The text is therefore
kept separately on the side in order to give room for the main image – as
its colours are strong and would attract the eyes to the photo before it
would read the text (so keeping the text and image separated would
encourage the readers not to feel overwhelmed or confused by mixing the
ratios together).
