1. Lover Not A Fighter – TinieTempah Ft Labrinth
Genre elements Conventions
Characters –
representations,
stereotypes, behaviour,
body language, specific
actors/stars
Characters in the video include the artist TinieTempah and Labrinth. There are also two
women in the video. The artists are represented in the videos as the lovers while the
women are shown as the fighters in sports cars showing aggressive behaviour. This breaks
the stereotypical gender bias of men and women. The genre of the song is Hip/hop but as
the 2 Artist don’t really show this in the conventional way of over excessive jewellery and
tattoos as they are dressed in high end fashion. However they are wearing the
stereotypical sunglasses throughout.
Narrative events –how is
the narrative ordered and
structured? Can character
types or other narrative
elements such as
opposites/ stages of
equilibrium/disequilibriu
m be applied to
photos/video?
The video is both performance and has a narrative running through the whole text.
Elements of performance can be seen when the artists are together alone in what looks lik
and abandoned warehouse as you see then rapping and sing into the camera. A clear
narrative structure is evidence through the video. It is shown when the 2 artist are alone at
the start in next to the coast and walking towards the bull ring that they are looking for
women to love and the women that are sat on the sports car are there targets. When they
meet for the first time this is when the equilibrium is broke and throughout the rest of the
video there is a binary opposites shown between the men and the women, with the
women shown to be the fighters and men to be the lovers. At the end equilibrium is
restored when the start talking to each other and look as If they have found the love they
were looking for.
Iconography – props,
symbolic
codes/fonts/colour
schemes
Props used in the video include the sports cars and red bull fighting flags. There is also a
black banner with a red strip across it, which is the symbol or the album cover and was
used during the promotion of the album. The video has a summery feel about it because
of the colours of the cloths the characters are wearing. The women are dressed in short
provocative shorts and red and white t shirts. The males in the video are wearing white
shirts and TinieTempah wearing a patterned shirts in 1 scene. The males wearing the white
also suggests there innocence in the situation during the video.
Setting- mise en scene in
moving image/photos
The mise en scene of the video is a abandoned bull ring in Malaga, in the middle of the
night. The other to scene shows the artist on the coast while the sun is going down over
the sea with the mountains in the distant background, while the other scene is in the
interior of the bull ring that has wall painted red looking jaded.
Technical and audio
codes – camera use,
editing, lighting,
diegetic/non diegetic
sound, sfx/page layout:
the Guttenberg
principle/rule of thirds
The lighting throughout the video is quite high key in the bull ring due to flood lights that
have been assembled as they are filming the video in the middle of the night. The same
can be said for the scene near the sea as the sun is going down over the sea and is
captured by the camera but the scene inside is has low key lighting. The camera work in
the video is mainly a collection of middle shits with a few close us and long shots. The
camera also tracks across when the artist are singing and rapping into the camera.
Furthermore there is some non diegetic sound of a voice over, traditional Spanish music
and screeching tyres all before the song starts to play.
