1. Question 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
My ancillary projects use convention of the Electronic dance music genre. For example the colours
used in creating the digipack and the album poster. One of these conventions was the used of the
bright neon like colour for the text, eyes and mouth on both ancillary 1 and ancillary 2 projects. This
convention can be seen for example in the album poster that I analysed by knife party, for their one
of the recent EP’s, as this used bright neon like colours.
Another way my media products apply to the conventions of the genre of music is thought the mise
en scene of the video. The setting was a garage and the way we set it up using a stage, speakers and
lights it recreate the mise en scene of a club or a live venue where the artist is preforming. An
example of an existing media product that does this is Martin Garrix and Hardwell song ‘Wizard’ the
artist are prefoming the track live which at what looks like a festival to thousands of people.
The type of camera shots that we got for the video consisted of mostly close up and mid shots.
These were most common as it gives the impression that there are more people in the video. This
means that made it easier to organise people and direct the production of getting the footage. It
also keeps to the conventions as it shows the artist preforming.
The ancillary project helped with the creation of certain aspects of the video. An example of this is
the back drop of the stage which had the artist name and the logo of the artist. This creates
consistence between the media texts. This applies to the convention which is used by Marin Garrix in
the video for ‘Animals’ as animal masks are worn which creates consistency through the promotion
of the song. Furthermore Deadmau5 also does this as whenever he preforms live h always wears a
mouse mask creating consistency with his name. Similar to our video we created a mask out of a
cardboard box and made it in the same style as the artist logo that we created in the ancillary
project.
2. Question 4: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and
evaluation stages?
In creating my video I used different types of programs that included adobe photoshop and
premiere. While in the AS year I already had used a few programs and was familiar with them for
example photoshop and prezi in creating my evolution.
When creating the my ancillary projects I already had the basic skills of using adobe photoshop from
the AS year so therefore I was further developing my skills in creating these. This year I found it
easier to create the effects that can be seen in the digipack, for example the outer glow that is
around the text and the artist logo.
When it came to filming the video I didn’t really know how to set up the camera, which was a Nikon
digital SLR. To help with this we created a short sequence with a few people in acting out scenario.
We filmed the scenario a 5 times from different angles and got different types of shots for example
close ups, and mid shots and long shots. When we did the first shoot for the music video with the
mise en scene being created to replicate a music venue, getting the opacity right to let the right
amount of light in to the camera took time and some shots came out to dark to use. We then took
time to make then adjustments to the opacity so then we next started to film the video we could
film straight away and not waste time making the adjustments.
Before creating the video I hadn’t heard of adobe premiere so it took me bit of time to get used to
how to edit the footage that we filmed. When creating which helped used get to know how to use
the camera we also used this as an opportunity to get to learn how to edit the footage. After
creating the short sequence I felt quite competent about my skills and made editing the main
product easier, especially the fast paced edits when the music is building up to drop. When creating
the video I did find it difficult I placing the clips of footage at the exact point of the change of the
beat which I got better at when I zoomed in on the work area and was able to see the bars of the
song clearer.
When using prezi this time to create my evaluation using different formats I found it easier to create
a more complex presentation the what I created in my foundation portfolio.
