Explore the importance of collaboration and how E-learning for Health used the Adapt tool to meet their requirements. Developing capability across the organisation and allowing different teams and regions all over the UK to collaborate and share vital content.
14. “We can’t do that…..yet!”
We can’t do what
they want with what
we have and …
We will not fail to
give them what
they want so …
Tear up the book
and start again!
18. In summary….
We collaborated with subject matter experts

“We are not following a path …
we are cutting through the
undergrowth … and shedding
light on the shadows”
Introduce myself
20 years in and around e-learning, variety of roles
Currently Programme Lead at HEE e-LfH
Who here has heard of Health Education England?
HEE is responsible for making sure the workforce is properly trained to deliver patient care
We are responsible for the e-learning part of that.
Kings Fund video on Youtube
Started in 2005 with R-ITI to use e-learning to supplement existing training to increase training capacity for radiologists
CMO Sir Liam Donaldson called it “one of the most positive developments in medical education in 20 years”
Subjects now range from audiology to anaesthesia, dentistry to dermatology, endoscopy to end of life care, safeguarding to sepsis.
Over 100 programmes and over 10,000 unique pieces of content
All in NHS blue
Started out mainly working on medical content for doctors
Image scroller
Case study
Scenario-based learning
Also do more soft skills type content
This is a video to demonstrate how a clinician should approach a patient who has suffered female genital mutilation
Usual question types: radio button, drag and drop,
We do a lot of reflective learning, that’s a big thing in clinical education
All very typical e-learning
Accessed through an LMS, users had accounts and logged in, recorded scores and statuses using SCORM etc
So that majority of our content is aimed at a clinical audience.
It’s very diverse audience but they all work in the same sector.
This is aimed at families of children and young people who suffer poor mental health
I’ll just give you some background into the situation with regards to child mental health in this country
1 in 10, that’s three per classroom of 30 kids, will suffer from poor mental health
50% of lifetime mental illnesses are present by age 14
Early detection and intervention can make a difference
Saving money and potentially save someone’s life
HEE are experts in e-learning, not children’s mental health so we collaborate with experts in the relevant field
To gather that expertise, a consortium was put together with different areas of expertise
Counselling vs medication
Research charity vs ‘front line’ charity
Sat down with a group of parents of children who suffered from poor mental health to hear their stories.
This was a powerful session that gave us invaluable insight and brand new requirements.
If I had to trace the success of the project back to one thing, it would be that meeting.
A new user base with new requirements
All very different to what we had done before:
No tracking and no assessment required
no log in or other barriers
ability to jump around easily
easy to understand/no jargon
mobile friendly
1) Shared author teams – with parents for parents – important collaboration – co-authoring model

3) Built to the same high quality standards
4) Fully device responsive
All done in 9 months and within original budgets!
Had to create responsive content because of audience needs
late night, nowhere else to turn, iPad at the kitchen table
Waiting to see specialist
Selection process ended up choosing Adapt
Collaboration with Learning Pool
Previously we had done lots of tech development ourselves but we tapped into Learning Pool’s expertise
New style of learning
Shorter, more interactive
Distinctive, strong look
Graphically rich
Easy to jump around – more like a website
Reading age sensitive,
Easy read versions for all topics
We knew we didn’t have the answers alone, so we collaborated in all directions, particularly with parents, and it was fundamental to our success,
Breaking down stigma by getting the knowledge out there: ‘bringing light to the shadows’
