  3. Applying CX tools and techniques to analyse the candidate and new starter journey. First focussed on the applicant/candidate journey – analysing how we can we make the journey smoother, easier, quicker, more consistent. At the same time, we were transforming our recruitment model in response to changing candidate behaviour. Central to this is developing a new employer brand, which we created with our employees. Focus groups with recent new starters and managers and conducted interviews to ensure that we created a brand that was authentic and representative and attract the talent we want to join our organisation From this research we created a new dedicated careers website with a unique design and which helps us stand out as a less typical, forward facing local authority The insights provided helped identify areas of focus. Two themes kept recurring: 1. The lack of consistency of the new starter experience. We’ve developed a cohesive identity/brand and so it’s important that this continues through into the new starter process. 2. Black hole in communication between offer and day 1 – needed a solution to address this. Some new starters didn’t hear from the organisation for months   In response to these challenges, we wanted to find a cost effective means to address them. Why? Because: -Onboarding a new starter well is vital. Onboarding goes way beyond induction training. It’s about creating an experience, a feeling. -We agreed that onboarding starts before day 1. It starts the moment someone accepts an offer. We want people to feel part of Bucks as soon as they’ve accepted an offer. The reasoning behind providing a great onboarding experience is sound: -New hires are expensive, we need to protect our recruitment investment -Early staff turnover (those who join and leave with 12 months) has wide reaching negative impact – financial being one of them, but also detrimentally impacts on team culture, morale and opportunity loss of not capitalising on that person’s potential and ideas. -Great onboarding process that extends beyond the initial training and that begins before the first day with engagement and information, can affirm to new starters that they made the right choice and that they see their future here.

It was informative and friendly. I told my colleagues in my previous job about it and also showed it to my daughter who is a HR Advisor for a global organisation. The section about the Water Garden area and 'bring your own mug' made the presentation very personal and reassuring. Thank you for ensuring my first week got off to a good start and that I was well prepared! It was very helpful and made me feel valued as a new employee, thank you.
