1. Who are the people in the photograph?
The suits on the left could be feds, and the people besides them could be on lookers or
pedestrians.
2. What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the
photo that tells you this.
I believe that this photo was taken during the 1920’s during prohibition. This is based on
their clothing and the cobbled streets. I think that the people with jugs are pouring out
bathtub gin because that’s what I want it to be. They could be celebrating a new
underground sewage system.
3. What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
I think that this photo could have been in a newspaper to convey that the government is
going to take down anyone who breaks the law.
4. Why is this photograph important to history?
I think it is, it tells one side of prohibition the government’s side. It is certainly a powerful
photo.
5. What questions does this photograph raise?
What is in those jugs??? Are they celebrating the fact that they have an underground
sewage system?
6. Write your own caption for the photograph:
a. J.Edgar Hoover showing everyone that prohibition is against the law.
b. Street cleaners before the machines were invented
c. “How to get rid of toxic waste” The book cover
d. the cast of Newsies get a different job instead of bitching about the one
they lost
e. Feds vs. Bartenders
7. What could you do to find more information about this photograph?
Research prohibition, and find out who lead the war against booze during this era.
8. Based on what you have observed list 3 things you might infer from the
photograph
1- This is outside a factory due to the work gloves and the building in the
foreground.
2- It seems to be wintertime due to the clothing.
