This document contains a summary of the movie "A Day Without a Mexican" from the perspective of a student named Hana Hinds. Some key points:
- The student found the movie's production value and choppy editing to be poor, but thought the concept of Hispanics in California disappearing and causing economic collapse was interesting.
- Scenes of racism from politicians and a TV producer made the student cringe, including a demand that an actress change her accent.
- Problems in the movie included economic collapse, lack of food, and a pink fog blocking communication, but the solution of just waiting for things to return to normal was not very realistic.
- The student proposes more practical solutions like

A Day Without A Mexican
Although I find the overall movie to have a terrible production value, and watching was physically
painful, the concept/ theme of the film was interesting. Hispanic people in California going missing, and
that results in their economy collapsing? I never would have thought of that. Maybe it is an American’s
blind ignorance because this is a first world country, but I certainly have opened my eyes now. I know
it’s a mockumentary but the scenes were cut in such a choppy way that it was hard to watch. I was
confused for a good half of it. My favorite part is definitely when a scene stops and there are captions.
They are informative and funny. The unabashed racism from the governor and the TV producer made
me cringe. Especially during the job interview when the TV producer made Lila Rodriguez change her
accent was justdepressing. I thought that the pink fog surrounding the state was lazy writing, and the
blonde woman who lost her husband was by far the worst actress in the movie. The movie was forced
and it seemed that they came up with a concept (Hispanic people disappearing), then improvised from
there.
These are the problems that are presented in the movie. California’s economy collapsed, they
were running out of food, the pink fog blocked all communication from the outside world; restaurant
workers disappear, fruit is left unpicked, overall panic, and blatant racism. However the solution for
their problems was far from a usable one if this ever happened. They just waited it out until more
Hispanic folks came from elsewhere and it was safe for the people that the border patrol stuffed into a
car was safe to come out.
This is what I think the solution could be to California’s problem. I think that since everyone is
panicking, and food is running out the people who have jobs that are no longer relevant due to the fog
(i.e. tech, executives, etc.) should man up and get pick food for California’s population. I mean they are
doing nothing, get off your ass and help! Another option could be nonprofit organization could help
clean up the abandoned cars, and help with the food problem. Also they could ration food until a more
permanent solution came about. This his movie helped me realize how much the rest of the country
relies on California’s economy to function normally. It also helped me cement my feelings of how lazy
American’s are.
