Theme Of Gender In Twelfth Night
The Struggle of the Sexes in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night The interchangeability of the sexes is a
prevalent implication throughout William Shakespeare' Twelfth Night. In fact, the concluding
romantic pairings are only introduced, as well as established, at the very end of the play. In addition,
gender, either assumed by one character or inferred by one character of another character, proves to
be irrelevant when initial attractions develop between characters. This suggests that Shakespeare
believed, "homoerotic and heterosexual love [were] not [...] mutually exclusive in a person's
makeup" (Lindheim 692). His arbitrary portrayal of gender throughout the play thus creates a work
of literature that strays from the conventions of the romance genre of the time. The romance genre
has generally been characterized as:
"A quest undertaken by a single knight in order to gain a lady's favour; frequently its central interest
is courtly love, together with tournaments fought and dragons and monsters slain for the damsel's
sake; it stresses the chivalric ideas of courage, loyalty, honor, mercifulness to an opponent, and
elaborate manners" (Abrams 48).
Twelfth Night can more accurately be defined as a subgenre of the romance, namely the romantic
comedy:
"A love affair that involves a beautiful and engaging heroine (sometimes disguised as a man); the
course of this love does not run smooth, yet overcomes all difficulties to end in a happy union"
(Abrams 54).
While Twelfth Night fits into

Japanese Samurai Film Genre Essays
The Seven Samurai directed by Akira Kurosawa uses many film techniques and features of the
Japanese samurai film genre to engage and influence the viewing audience. The Japanese samurai
film genre focuses on the physical martial arts, and is very similar to American westerns. These
films are usually set in the Tokugawa era and the main characters are samurai, or Ronin. The Seven
Samurai is a stereotypical Japanese samurai movie set in the Tokugawa era about a village full of
farmers who hire seven samurai to protect their village from a group of bandits. Kurosawa has used
many features of a typical samurai film in The Seven Samurai such as the use of the katana, the
samurai were usually clean cut and are seen as socially superior and that ... Show more content on

In the film when the farmers are walking around the town looking for samurai to help their village it
is easy for the farmers and also the viewing audience to tell the difference between the samurai and
the peasants. The samurai walk around with pride, they have their chest up and are look above the
crowd as if they should not be there with the peasants, and the peasants are hunched over looking at
the floor. When the farmers go to the village in search of samurai, Rikichi, one of the farmers, gets
down on his knees and begs for the samurai to help his village, many of the samurai just walked past
him without blinking an eye, they should not be dealing with peasants, they are superior, they should
be answering to lords not peasants. All samurai even Ronin are seen as socially superior and they act
that way as well, most of them wouldn't work for the farmers. The samurai thought they shouldn't be
employed by mere peasants and that they should work for lords and shoguns.
Endings were usually described as bitter sweet as life goes on in the face of tragedy. This feature of
the samurai film genre focuses on the end of the film, the endings are usually have someone or a
number of important people die, the bitter part, but the main antagonist is also captured or killed, the
sweet part. The ending of The Seven Samurai is seen as bitter sweet as the bandits die, and the
village is saved however

Native Son Sociology
The major genre of Native Son is a sociological novel, which is one that "concentrates on the nature,
function, and effect of the society in which characters live" (Harmon 487). Throughout the plot,
Wright depicts a segregated Chicago and demonstrates the innate social dominance of the whites
over the black people. With this setting, Wright explores this social pyramid, showing the injustices
towards the black race and the limits and boundaries placed on them as well. Wright especially
demonstrates the effects of this racial hierarchy through the character of Bigger Thomas, who
represents the potential reactions of the oppressed that can result from the prejudice society. The
sub–genre of Native Son is a psychological novel. A psychological

Character Analysis Of Regina George And Kate Sanders
Just as rules and boundaries exist in most of the world, they also make their way into the movie
making industry, in particularly in Hollywood films. Hollywood moviemakers focus on relatable,
real–life possible events, which they dramatize and turn into big hit blockbusters. In order to
categorize their many productions, they use the notion of genre and create their own
rules/qualifications to be able to classify movies as such. This categorization even persists within the
movies themselves, especially within the extremely popular teen girl genre. Teen girl films focus
primarily on the stereotypical junior high/high school life of an adolescent female. Thus, the
narrative of the films must contain specific rules and character types that encompass high school
life. To make a real seller, the most often–used character type is the so–called 'mean' or 'popular' girl
in a social hierarchy based school. In order to be identified as the 'mean and popular' girl character,
one must be physically attractive, judgmental/cruel, and be the center of attention. To understand
this archetypal character type it is best to examine the two most 'infamous' popular girls in the
industry, Regina George, and Kate Sanders. Although, Regina George and Kate Sanders exist in two
very distinct narratives, their personality traits are not at all different or unique. Interestingly, since
The Lizzie McGuire Movie was produced before Mean Girls, Kate Sanders ends up being the first

Art and Video Game
Historically video games have been considered a novelty or technical subject, but in recent year
given the increase in technology video games have been able to show that they are more. While not
a traditional art form, video games do have an artistic basis. Video games are increasingly becoming
more story and visually based. With these increased artistic elements it is increasingly becoming
harder to deny that video games are art, but maybe they are not the art defined by a traditional
definition. Critics state that that video games do not have the artistic values that art has but perhaps
there needs to be a new definition of what art is to include video games. Art can be divide in to two
different categories, "literacy arts," art forms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Saints Row, a game some would argue immature do to its use of juvenile humor and phallic weapon
choices, is in fact a great example of video games maturing as an art form. As seen throughout the
history of movies, there is a pattern of genre creation and criticism of the genre through spoofs and
satirical works. Saints Row is an example of this development in video games, criticizing the
gangster crime genre made notorious by Grand Theft Auto. This development in the genre is an
example of a genre referring back to itself and poking holes in some of its conventions, a key
element of a maturing medium. Traditionally art has been produced by a single artist, a major
criticism of the notion that video games, a collaborative effort of a team, could be considered an art
form. This criticism is limited to mainstream video games, though, since many independently
developed video games are the works of a small team, as few as two, and they display the most
artistic characteristics. Not burdened by the heavy costs of triple–a game development indie
developers are able to put their hearts into their games and produce wonderfully artistic games and
not worry about if it will sell to the widest audience. These games are evidence of the artistically
heights video games can achieve. Video games are a collaborative art form created by a team instead
of a singular artisan (Hall). That is not to say that

Five Dimensions Of Hegemonic Masculinity
In–depth interviews and participant observation that were conducted confirm that hegemonic
masculinity exists inside rock genre. There are five dimensions of hegemonic masculinity that will
be explained in this study. First, I will discuss about hegemonic masculinity as a tool to ascertain
male domination as previously said by Connell (1987) and Schippers (2002) that takes form in
women's interest on rock music. This domination renders masculinity as the real rock fan identity
(Eastman, 2012). Masculine identity determined by the men causes men to reject or question women
who happen to be in that terrain (Bourdieu, 2001; Yates, 2014). Rejection against women is not only
done by men, but even women do so through judgment towards women who do not display
masculinity (Howe & Friedman, 2014). Lastly, women rock fans also concur to this domination
(Gramsci in Adams & Dickey, 2000). This consent is given by justifying sexist lyrics and continuing

"I wanna see it painted, painted black" : Masculinity as the Norm
The previous point has delineated men's roles as a form of hegemonic masculinity. Hegemony
manifests itself in mass media in the form of rigid gender roles (Schippers, 2002). Bennett (2009)
later adds that hegemonic masculinity is needed inside a community as a conformity towards
cultural identity. This point will later elaborate on hegemonic masculinity becoming the identity of a
group which consists of rock fans.
I gathered that women rock fans associated rock genre with men or masculinity. Tolerance towards
men's position inside rock subculture was also shown by opinions of women rock fans regarding
their identity as The Fallen as a metalhead. The Fallen is the catchy name that Avenged Sevenfold
fans from around the world call themselves. Meanwhile, metalhead refers to rock or metal fans in
general. Women rock fans, even those who are heavily invested in Avenged Sevenfold or rock genre
as a whole, were reluctant to call themselves "The Fallen" or

Discourse Community Analysis
In his article "The Concept of Discourse Community," Professor John Swales defines what a
discourse community is, following with a list of six different points that a group must align with in
order to qualify as a discourse community. These parameters are as follows: "a broadly agreed set of
common public goals," "mechanisms of intercommunication among its members," the use of
"participatory mechanisms primarily to provide information and feedback", use or possession of
"one or more genres in the communicative furtherance of its aims", "some specific lexis", and "a
threshold level of members with a suitable degree of relevant content and discoursal expertise"
(471–473).
After identifying and describing the six points of criteria for qualification, Swales writes that even if
just one attribute is missing, it may still be enough to prevent the formation of a discourse
community (469). Keeping this in mind, it is important to identify all six points when trying to
prove the existence of a discourse community. Due to the presence of all six attributes, I am a part of
a discourse community myself. During the summer months, I work as a lifeguard at Avalon Summer
Sports Club, a local ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

everyday tasks, and is "driven by the requirements for efficient communication between experts"

rescues and maintaining a safe environment. There are also terms and phrases for objects around the
pool and tasks that must be completed. For example, there is a pool cleaner that is placed in the
water at closing and left there to vacuum the bottom of the pool overnight. The vacuum is a called a
dolphin pool cleaner and guards are often told to "clean the dolphin," which often results in funny
looks from those who overhear the

Cultural Significance Of Teen Films
Teen films are the definitive genre that captures the adolescent zeitgeist during the 1980s, and its
popularity still hold cultural relevance in the present day. The teen films produced during the 1980s
effectively represent youth concerns and the coming–of–age narrative, in terms of adolescent
identity, the different roles characters play, sexuality, gender, relationships, class issues and the
generational divide. Exploring these issues is essential for recognizing the cultural significance of
this specific group of films and how they are important in addressing concerns of the adolescent
coming of age narrative. The Breakfast Club by John Hughes is an exploration and reflection of the
changing Hollywood industry, political, economic, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sex and relationships are recurring themes throughout the genre and are essential elements teen
narrative. Their portrayal ranges from comic interactions to serious exchanges and emotional
liberation from restrictive forces. Timothy Shary explains the significance of these two thematic
threads: "Romantic longing and sexual curiosity take on heightened intensity and profundity for
youth in the adolescent years struggle to recognise and cope with the emotional and psychological
changes"(2002). The character's experience with sex are usually comedic and linked to sexual
discovery and loss of virginity, which are continually present topics in the narrative. It is is often a
determinant that shapes teen identity, as well as providing a commentary on societal questions
regarding a desire of intimacy. The sexual exploits between the teen male and female investigates
teen behavior and the conceptualization of feelings and emotions in their discovery of identity.
Another convention which surfaces again and again during the 1980s teen genre is the generational
divide that exists in the familial structure, resulting in teens rebelling against adult authority. Within
the genre adults are often portrayed in a negative light in both comical and serious ways: teachers
are depicted as corrupt and arrogant as incompetent social figures. Parents are often unseen, distant,
emotionally detached, cold, violent and abusive. The setting and

Comparing Ecotopia And Thomas More's Utopian Genre
The Utopian genre has evolved over a number of decades in order to experiment with changing
values and ideals of the ever–evolving societies of the times. Thomas More's Utopia defined a new
literary genre within the 16th century and onwards, allowing for an array of texts to explore the
particular ideals and values that were often preached during the respective time period but never
formally recognized. This is also the case for Ernest Callenbach's Ecotopia, a utopian text written in
the 1970s, attaching fundamental importance to the restoration of the natural world and the feminist
values of Ecotopian society. The development of the genre from the 16th to 20th centuries is evident
through the differences in principles that are addressed in each text, all of which are a reflection of
the values of their respective time periods.
More's Utopia established the existence of the utopian genre, exhibiting a political vision of 16th
century Britain. The composer presents a model of an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

representation of the poor as hardworking and productive, where the composer describes their "daily

the poor emphasizes More's criticism of the European social system, hinting that the greed and

Netflix's Reconfiguration Of Flow
In 2007, Netflix, an online video rental service founded in the late 1990s, changed courses and
began to offer a video on demand streaming service that, though not the first of its kind, profoundly
altered the way in which viewers watch and categorize televisual texts in the Post–Network Era of
streaming and individualization of television viewing. This influence warrants a reconfiguration of
Raymond Williams' classic theory of flow as well as of Ethan Thompson's more recent theory,
which makes necessary advances by correctly accounting for a shift toward catering to audience
tastes, but fails to address the particularities of the streaming platform. This essay argues that what I
call "streaming flow", still encourages continual viewing, but ... Show more content on

Netflix has engendered a generic recategorization of texts into previously established genres, as well
as into newly established generic categories meant to organize these diverse texts in new and very
specific adjective based genres, such as political dramas or spiritual documentaries, which combine
descriptive and generic words meant to capture viewers. This generic specificity also accounts for
the fact that texts are often cross–listed across multiple of these traditional and contemporary genres.
Additionally, texts are categorized on each user's homepage according to generic categories
generated by the user's profile and viewing history, with categories like, "you might also like this"
and "because you watched...". In accordance with Mittell's genre theory, which states that genre is a
cultural practice situated in larger cultural hierarchies and power relations and accounts for specific
attributes of the medium, Netflix's unique genre categories account for the particular attributes of the
medium, but also, significantly, of the new digital platform as well. In making these arguments, I
analyze the functions of the platform which create "streaming flow", its algorithm, format, and
generic categorization, as well as texts such as Arrested Development (2003–) and Stranger Things
(2016–), that comprise streaming flow and which are generically categorized by

Analysis Of Her Mistress's Clothes By Harriet Cany Peale
Her Mistress's Clothes by Harriet Cany Peale is a wonderful example of a composition that
identifies African American and Anglo–Saxon women in 1848, displaying the difference of race and
their identities within this period.
Cany Peale's painting shows an Anglo–Saxon woman engaging with an African American woman,
at first glance, one could assume this is a genre painting, that of a peaceful scene demonstrating
people in everyday activities ("Genre Painting"). Two women intimately engaging "in a grooming
ritual" (Byrd) however this thought is fractured as you see the controlling way the Anglo–Saxon
woman holds the bottom of the African American woman's face as she gazes upon herself in the
mirror. A spectacle of power and control that is further illustrated as the Anglo–Saxon woman stands
slightly taller than the African American, demonstrating the hierarchy and to establishing their
identities as Mistress and slave.
The slave is compositionally arranged in front of the Mistress in a predominant position, however as
noted in our text this week, most of the slaves placed in the foreground of a painting in this era were
done so in humor, to tease or to make them look immature (Pohl 278). As the title suggests, this
slave has been dressed up by her Mistress in her Mistress's clothing as a way for the Mistress to
make fun of the slave, teasing her with a taste of wealth and upper class. Cany Peale's previous
career in fancy–goods gave her the understanding of what was in fashion

conventions at various points in film history. 'Scarface' was highly influential within this genre and
when it was released there was not the same censorship as there is in the 21st century. The

Similarly to 'Scarface' and 'The Godfather', violence and crime are key themes in the films and
therefore the male characters dominate the violent scenes and radiate willpower. Mia Wallace, the
wife of the gangster Marsellus Wallace is portrayed as powerful and seductive. At first, it appears
that she is stable within her relationship with Wallace, and is additionally feared by other individuals
such as Vincent, when he arrives at her house to escort her for a night out. However, later on Mia
mistakes heroin for cocaine and manages to overdose, which results in her relying on the man in her
life because she is so weak. Even so, in the promotional poster of 'Pulp Fiction', Uma Thurman
(Mia), is shown posing on a bed with a cigarette in one hand and a gun in front of her. This in many
ways signifies power as the gun has become a key piece of iconography in the gangster genre, and
guns hold a lot of power in them as they have the ability, with help, to kill or cause serious bodily
harm. Nevertheless, this is misleading as the women, specifically Mia Wallace, do not actually hold
any power in the film. Mia Wallace's character is a reminder of Marsellus'

Perk Of Being A Wallflower, And The Perks Of Being A...
To the average American teenager, high school may have seemed like a real–life nightmare. So why
is it that so many movies today revolve around this hellish concept? According to David Denby, the
author of "High–School Confidential: Notes on Teen Movies", there is a whole genre of these teen
films. As explained by Denby, such genre films include stereotypical male and female villains of the
social queen or jock type, mixed up emotions and teens rising above the "poisonous system of
status, snobbery and exclusion" that is commonly known as high school (Denby 367). By this
definition, the film The Perks of Being a Wallflower can be categorized as a teen film. Based on the
book published in 1999, The Perks of Being a Wallflower follows Charlie ... Show more content on

However, for the majority or teens, there is a considerable amount of teen angst that comes from this
emotional growth. When depicted in movies, Denby explains that "these films arise from
remembered hurts which then get recast in symbolic form." (Denby 369). In Denby's example, the
main character may have suffered from the death of a parent and thus "is ill equipped for the
emotional pressures of school." (Denby 369). This can be seen to be incredibly true for the main
character of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Through out the film, there are memories brought up
from Charlie's past about his best friend's suicide, his Aunt's Death, and his past sexual abuse. For
example, when Sam kisses Charlie and rubs his leg, Charlie gets flashbacks of a similar situation in
which his adult Aunt sexually abuses him. Due to his past, Charlie is depicted as unable to cope with
the problems he faces, through his actions over the course of the film. Charlie takes a passive role in
his life. For example, when his sister is abused by her boyfriend, Charlie does not step in. He also
doesn't speak up when Mary Elizabeth declares that she and Charlie are dating, though he clearly
doesn't have any interest in her. From the audience's point of view, it is known that his passive
actions are a result of his emotional problems. However, as explained by Denby, "the motherless
child also has powers and will someday be a

Isolation In A Little Princess And Children Of Men
Throughout his career, Alfonso Cuarón has proven himself to be a talented and versatile director in
multiple genres. This report will discuss two of Cuarón's works, A Little Princess (1995) and
Children of Men (2006). Released almost a decade apart, the Disney family film and dystopian
drama share many differences but also some important similarities. In particular, the themes of
segregation and isolation play a central role in both films and are both adapted to screen using
similar film techniques such as use of colour and camera angles. Through an analysis of these key
themes, this report will discuss their significance and endurance in Cuarón's wider body of work.
The theme of segregation is prevalent throughout both A Little Princess and Children of Men. In the
former it is most prevalent in the character of Becky, a black servant girl who is forbidden from
speaking to the schoolgirls and is dressed only in rags. Becky's segregation is two–fold as she falls
to the bottom of the social hierarchy in terms of both class and race. Following the
miscommunication of her father's death, Sara was also thrust to the bottom of the social hierarchy, ...

gives dialogue to the underlying tone and feelings of sadness throughout the film. While differing in

different from the social dancing we experience today. There are different layers to baroque dance

Even while the events took place, guests would be invited to dance depending on their "rank". The
king and queen would participate in minute dancing and it is as literal as it sounds. The king and
queen would dance for a literal minute before the queen would dance with the princes' and then the
princes would move on to dance with the princesses all before then bowing to the king (Kassing
109–110). There was structure, strict structure at that, and all though this is a subtle structure to the
baroque era, it is this structure that is related to the art of ballet we study today. Part of what made
the baroque era a defined art was its intensity of aristocrat power, "...the Baroque approach was
likely to exhibit some combination of power, massiveness, or dramatic intensity, embellished with
pageantry, color, and theatrical adventure" (Guisepi). Reflecting on these words, it makes sense why
the ballet we train for today has a certain stoic technique. Ballet was conceived in a royal context.
Yes, it was more clearly developed in later eras, but the baroque era was the seed of such intentional
technique. Ballet has grown to be a very intense performance with a strict technique and it is still
associated as one of the most important, if not the most important, genre to be taught. Especially
since it is the base of many other dance techniques. Again, these social

Tips on Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing
Within academic writing it is advised that a combination of both direct and indirect quotes
(paraphrasing) are used. Often it is better to paraphrase what an author has said as opposed to using
lengthy direct quotations. But what does it mean 'to paraphrase'? According to the MacMillan
English Dictionary (MacMillan, 2012:online), to paraphrase is "to express what someone else has
said or written using different words, especially in order to make it shorter or clearer." When you
paraphrase another author's writing you rewrite their argument using your own words, phrasing and
interpreting it in your own way.

Many think that the appeal of rap music, commonly portrayed with blatant sex, gratuitous violence,

irrelevant or foolish. But you can't ignore the fact that many other genres of music do the same
thing. Many old rock and roll songs referenced illegal drugs, other rock songs frequently refer to
violence and other crimes of the sort, and modern pop frequently talks about love, sometimes in a
very explicit way. Even some operas and classical compositions were written to portray the stories
of star–crossed lovers, killing everyone who tried to refute their love. But hip–hop can be more than
this. Looking at songs such as "1–800" by Logic once again, or "I'm sorry" by Joyner Lucas, both of
these songs include the very emotional topic of suicide. Rap can express any meaning other musical

Analysis Of Anselm Kiefer's Burning Rods
The painting Burning Rods, made by Anselm Kiefer is very interesting all the way around from the
materials that are being used to the message it gives. At first glance of this artwork, it looks like a

acrylic emulsion, and shellac on canvas with lead, copper wire, straw, iron, and ceramic (STL). This
is a very interesting combination of media with a finished result of a texture and flaky looking

one of the elements that help with understanding why he created this artwork in the first place.

Tom Stoppard and the Crime-Writing Genre
Mankind has perpetually maintained a fascination with what constitutes a crime and enjoyed piecing
together the clues that authors of the crime genre provide us in solving their mysteries, thus
appealing to our curiosity in the darker side of our humanity. The crime–writing genre embodies
humankind in its fullest, revealing our potential for both good and evil, a notion that is responsible
for the genre's cross–contextual survival and universal appeal. It is due to this undying interest that
writers of crime texts have the ability to subvert conventions and thereby deconstruct the
philosophical and psychological assumptions that crime fiction is constructed upon. By subverting
the conventions of the crime–writing genre, composers are able to more freely explore issues
concerning their respective contexts, a significant factor that has contributed to the genre's
endurance. Tom Stoppard's play 'The Real Inspector Hound' is a post–modern text which utilises its
absurdist nature to reflect the nihilistic philosophy of crime. The text simultaneously adheres to and
discards the conventions of the crime genre through its employment of parody and its satirical
characteristics.
Tom Stoppard's 'The Real Inspector Hound', first performed in 1968, is a one act play and dual satire
of Agatha Christie's conventional Golden Age, 'cosy' locked room mystery 'The Mousetrap' and the
crime writing genre itself. Though the setting of the action is in a theatre, the play within a play is

Archetype In Elhery II : The Destruction Of Audrey II
"Feed me, Seymour!" (Ashman). When spectators go to the theater, or sit down to watch a movie–
musical, they certainly aren't expecting the surprise Little Shop of Horrors brings them. The villain
of this tale, Audrey II, is a seemingly innocent venus fly trap with an attitude and, as the audience
finds out later, a taste for human blood. It's extremely rare for a musical to have an actual alien–like
monster onstage, not just for technical reasons, but because it's hard to ask an audience to suspend
disbelief to the point of them believing an animatronic, and sometimes puppeteered, plant is
genuinely dangerous. Because of this, Audrey II, who for all intensive purposes will be referred to
as a male, is unlike any other character in musical theatre history. However, not only is he a villain
the theater world is unfamiliar with, he's a metaphor for so much more. Audrey II is a predestinate,
alien–like monster who symbolizes the grotesqueness of greed and power, especially in political
climates, and shows how easily the line between survival and longing for world domination can be
crossed. Prior to properly excavating the hidden layers of this massive plant, it is important to have a
strong base of knowledge regarding archetypes, and more specifically in this case, the alien
archetype. In layman's terms, an archetype can be defined as "a recurrent symbol or motif in
literature, art, or mythology" (Mac.) According to Orson Scott Card's "Hierarchy of Foreignness"

Casta Painting Analysis
'Casta Paintings' refer to a pictorial genre developed in the early eighteen centuries in New Spain to
portray procreation. They are sequencing of images that illustrate the three major races that resided
in the Americas: Indigenes (indios), Spaniards (Españoles), and Africans (negros). The process of
mixing ancestries in the union of people of different races was known as mestizaje. 'Casta' was a
hierarchical system of race classification created by Spanish elites in Hispanic America during the
18th century. Casta paintings, produced for elite criollo audiences (those of Spanish ancestry born in
the Americas), bolstered economic and social inequality and legitimized a racial hierarchy that kept
criollos at the top. The "whiter" the heritage a person could claim, the higher in status they could
claim, conversely, darker features meant less ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each scene depicts a man and a women and their offspring, accompanied by a label identifying each
person by a casta category to reflect their degree of racial mixing. As we begin to examine the series
of Casta paintings by the artist José de Alcíbar from the second half of the 18th century we explore
the relationship between visual and textual depictions of colonial space. In the Series of 16, No. 1:
Spaniard and Indian produce a Mestizo, we see that the Spaniard is depicted as a white male, the
Indian as a dark woman, and the child as a white Mestizo. As stated before, the whiter one is the
higher prestige they have as well as an economic and social equality. The way they are labeled also
demonstrates the hierarchy that keep the criollos at the top. The way they are dressed also depicts
their origin, having the child be dressed in all white to demonstrate similar

Deconstructing A Maturer Pieter De Hooch
Deconstructing a Maturer Pieter de Hooch
Pieter de Hooch has humble origins. In 1629, he was born in Rotterdam in a butcher's family.
Receiving his early training under Ludolph de Jongh in Rotterdam, De Hooch later served his
apprenticeship under the landscape painter Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem in Haarlem. He is recorded as
a painter and footman to a wealthy merchant–adventurer Justus de la Grange in 1653. In 1654, he
married Jannetje van der Burch of Delft, and later he had seven children. Moving to Delft after his
marriage, he was registered with the Delft guild and became an independent artist in 1655. During
the years in Delft, he produced his most characteristic works. In 1661, he moved to Amsterdam and
remained there for the rest of his life. De Hooch's three periods in Rotterdam, Delft, and Haarlem
represent his three phases in painting with gradually maturer artistry. This paper uses De Hooch's
The Visit, a transitional work that was executed in 1657, his early Delft period, as a case study to
examine the development in De Hooch's artistic style in terms of the scene, composition and
perspective.
The Visit, also titled A Merry Company with Two Men and Two Women, delineates an familiar but
interesting scene in which two women entertain two visiting gentlemen in a seventeenth–century
Dutch living room. The group of four people portrayed in this representation can be further
subdivided into two groups. In one group, wearing a knowing smile, the woman appareled a

How Did The Black Plague Affect Society
The Black Plague was the worst pandemic in history, wiping out nearly a third of the population of
Europe during the 13th century, but it can also be considered a turning point of history. The Black
Plague caused a ripple effect that had a hand in the change of societal construct, religion, the arts,
and medicine.
Societal Hierarchy
During the High Middle Ages, Feudalism and the Societal Hierarchy was the social construct of the
land. In that time period only 10% of peasants were actually free men, the rest were under the social
class of serfs. Europe was becoming overpopulated due to periods of peace and prosperity, making it
incredibly convenient for cheap labor. Working for the lords of the land, Serfs were very much close
to slaves, but this all changed during the 1350s. The population began to decline due to mass
starvation caused by poor harvest, throughout parts of Europe. Increased warfare also contributed to
decline in population, such as Hundred Years' War. Perhaps the most detrimental of all this is, the
black plague, which began to wreak havoc in Europe around 1348. The Black Plague, "Black
Death", was a disease that civilization had no answer to. The massive deaths of the population
caused the feudal lords to face severe labor shortages, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, known as Raphael, has known art all of his life. His father, Giovanni

Raphael took over his father's workshop and surpassed the painting skills that Giovanni. In 1500,

lasted about four years once Raphael quickly gained all the knowledge and experience that Perugino

who always had a great eye for great art. In 1504, he left Perugino studio and went in search of the

Satire In Miller's Tale
Chaucer's tone comes forth as more ironic rather than direct criticism. Chaucer overly satirizes the
Miller's profession in order to manipulate the genre of estate satire to hopefully spark public
discourse. Miller understands the "Miller's Tale" as a complaint aimed at the hierarchy of estates
(Miller 147–48). For Chaucer's purposes, estate satire illustrates hierarchical divisions and social
function and morality of each character type. However, the subtle portraits of Chaucer's pilgrims
bring out how difficult it is to form moral and social judgments because of their dependence upon
each other. Chaucer tries to save himself from ridicule by saying he is only a scribe. In making the
criticism of the estate hierarchy the Miller's complaint ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Every night, Absolon would go sing outside of Alisoun's window: "Til he cam to the carpenteres

seems ridiculous in that he delusional in thinking that he could ever win Alisoun's love. However,
Absolon continues to try and court Alisoun in a fin amours type of manner. In terms of the Miller's
ideas concerning medieval social structure, Absolon's character presents a vehicle with which to

Absolon's late night courting obtains him no reward besides kissing Alisoun's buttocks. Enraged by

Since there is a concert we have to perform in a few months, it is especially important to work
together. In the lab portion of the class, the people who chose to do percussions meet up twice a
week and practice the piece we've been working on. In order to communicate with each other, we all
meet up and practice together. We occasionally get emails from the professor telling us important
dates and lessons. We use those mechanisms of communication in order to slowly improve as a
group. Between our meetings and the emails, I think that the emails are the genre of the discourse
community. While meeting as a group is important, it can be difficult and confusing based on the
person. The emails that the professor sends are a genre because it is understood by everyone. They
are useful because of the help they give students in the community, and it doesn't require a specific
lexicon to know what is being said. There aren't many rules for the class, but it there are hidden
ones. They are mainly common sense things like participate with the class, show up, and be on time.
In the lab, it is important to have the necessary vocabulary to understand the class. Language is a
key component to pass the lecture course. If you don't know the difference between adagio and
allegro, it is difficult to keep up with the class. Knowledge about music terms is completely
necessary because it is all of the things we're graded on. We were all required to know terms like

watching the professor perform. In the lecture portion of the class, the main goal is to have

Sublime In Frankenstein Essay
Most Gothic novels aim to show the sinister side of human nature. They depict the dark terrors
which lie beneath the reader 's mentality. The term "Gothic" suggests a genre which deals with
frightening and mysterious settings by giving connotations of ghostly castles and supernatural
events. The Sublime experience as stated by the critic Longinus is, "…a matter of treatment. The
particular form of the sublime experience that requires prepossessing objects is not only the form; it
is simply the form in which enthusiasm preponderates over irony" [1] . The Castle of Otranto is the
first Gothic novel written by Horace Walpole in which the idea of the Sublime is presented through

Edmund Burke a theorist stated in his works that, "…Whatever is fitted in any sort to excite the
ideas of pain and danger; that is to say, whatever is in any sort terrible, or is conversant about
terrible objects or operates in a manner analogous to terror, is a source of the sublime" [2] . The
critic attempts to assemble an authoritative definition of the sublime here. Furthermore Gothic
castles were built as symbols of systematic power; they were definite assertions of ambition that
rested on the owner 's control of others. A sense of empowerment is suggested through this idea
therefore indicating to the Sublime having a dominant role in the Gothic genre. Intended to convey a
disputing power, Walpole implies images of force, hierarchy, stability and command in the novel.
The Castle Of Otranto, attempts to capture a sense of realism through its illustration of settings and
characters. Burke commented that: "whatever is fitted to produce such a tension must be productive
of a passion similar to terror; and consequently must be a source of the sublime, though it should
have no idea of danger connected with it" [3] . Consequently the Sublime is shown to be produced
by a passion which is closely related to terror, this is evident through the tension created by the
settings and characters; a sense of terror is illustrated. The novel was an original Gothic behind the
overthrow of the Roman Empire, therefore Gothic at the time applied to

Analysis Of Burial Rites By Hannah Kent
Burial Rites is a novel based on a true story by Hannah Kent, which provides a voice to Agnes
Magnusdottir, a convicted criminal who was executed for a crime she may or may not have
committed. Kent conveys the historical genre through the novel and utilises setting in order to
engage readers by including modes of communication, transport and the way of life in the 1800's
that are not commonly used anymore. Throughout the novel, Kent optimises dialogue through the
use of old terms and utilising old court documents which place readers in the 1800's, engaging them
in a historical event that has been silenced.
Burial Rites explores the historical aspect of this compelling, real life tale through setting by using
horses as transport, letters as communication and execution as a punishment for murder. Horses are
no longer commonly used as a mode of transport and letters are generally no longer used as a form
of communication, however, Kent optimises these historical features in her novel by including
predominant ways of life in the 1800's. This effectively engages the readers as it sets them in an
alternative world. In the 1800's, when Agnes' life was taken not knowing if she was innocent or not,
death was her sentence. Kent includes this within the novel to enhance the historical genre as in
many countries of the world today, it is usually 20 years in prison for murder Setting functions to
engage readers through placing them in a time and place foreign to them, as today, many

Distinction Analysis : Pierre Bourdieu 's Theory Of Social...
Distinction reminds me of my school days in Korea. There were always popular kid groups from
wealthy families and whenever they worn new and fancy brand shoes and bags, the fashion became
an epidemic among peers in schools. Many kids tried to buy the same clothing and to be looked like
the popular kids groups. Even a lot of parents wanted to be close to parents of those kids and to
share private education lessens that the popular kids took out side of class. In Distinction, Pierre
Bourdieu explains the dominant class determines what higher or lower culture is then; the lower
class accepts the choice. Also, the aesthetic choice shows class distinction and presents people's
social position in our society. Even if his theories were established in France during the 1960's,
Bourdieu's argument is still effective and useful in contemporary society.
The author, Pierre Bourdieu is a French socialist and his work often stressed the capitalism of social
life different from traditional idealists. In Distinction, he uses quantitative and geometric data
analysis, empirical research and survey that were conducted in France during 1963–1968 to support
his theories. Bourdieu claims that individual person's status in the social space is defined by multiple
aspects of capital that they own. He focuses more on cultural capital, which is not related to
financial assets or economic meanings such as education, intellectual ability, style of speech and
attires. The social upper class oppresses

We Didn 't Start The Fire, By Billy Joel
There is no denying that over a multitude of years, music has inevitably found ways to challenge
power and power structures around the world. Music has found a way to use not only lyrics, but also
the gender of musicians and genres of music to oppose powerful entities. Throughout music 's long
lived history, lyrics have been the most obvious example of musical oppositions to power. Music
and songs have been created to protest wars, raise awareness to violence, express pride in one 's race
and culture, and challenge political forums, only to name a few examples. For example, "We Didn't
Start the Fire" by Billy Joel was created to oppose United States involvement in the Vietnam War,
along with raising awareness of both drug and race problems in America. Furthermore, lyrics are a
way in which an artist or composer can specifically tailor a message to explicitly state their take on a
given institution or outlet of power. On the other hand, lyrics have also been used in a coded fashion
to indirectly attack structures of power rather than explicitly attacking structure of power, which has
been proven useful in times of serious civil oppression. Lyrics tell a story, and historically singers
and songwriters have used them in a multitude of ways to construct a variety of messages that have
challenged societal norms and structures of power.
Additionally, there is no denying that the gender of the composer or artist plays a critical role in
challenging power dynamics. Female artists

The Armies has often come under critical scrutiny as a literary journalistic text that amalgamates

Mailer, the author, prefers the open ending of his narrative by closing the first book with his

Reflection Of A Discourse Community
John Swales (1990), professor of linguistics, defines a discourse community as an exclusive group
of people brought together by a common goal. According to John Swales (1990), every discourse
community has six characteristics that makes them a discourse community. Overall the group must
have a shared goal, in which they communicate with each other through different genres and lexis
they have developed; genres are different types of communication that the group employ and lexis is
the specialized language utilized by that particular discourse community. They also tend to have a
hierarchy within the group and require individual group members to truly participate to be counted
as a part of the discourse community. (p. 471–73)

A Popular Model Designed By Bruce W. Tuckman
So what are genres? When most people are asked this question they will reply with something like
science fiction, horror, mystery, or romance. While these are not fundamentally wrong answers,
those with such responses do not understand the full breadth of what genres truly are. According to
the dictionary, a genre is "a class or category of artistic endeavor having a particular form, content,
technique, or the like" (Genre). Still though this does not capture the full breadth of what a genre
really is. To explain how genres form, dynamically change, and serve their purposes we must first
take a step back and look at some other fundamental concepts. A popular model designed by Bruce
W. Tuckman suggests that all groups experience five phases: forming, storming, norming,
performing, and adjourning (Gulati 439–440). At our cores, humans seek to be accepted and
acknowledged by others. We seek to form social hierarchies to find meaning the areas we are
passionate about. This part of human nature is nothing new, it is something programmed deep into
our genes for millennia. It happens before our eyes every day; sports fans meet in stadiums, video
game fans meet at conventions, artists meet at exhibitions, and so on. People of similar interest
meet, one way or another, and are drawn together by their passion. Some groups remain small friend
circles, while others may grow vastly to be composed of millions of members. These vast
communities, known as discourse communities,

Traditional Ideologies Of Women During The Victorian Period
The Victorian period was an era of constantly shifting and contradicting ideologies concerning
women, which extended over many areas of society and culture including politics and the media, the
family and domestic field as well as the contemporary and traditional beliefs within the art
institutions. The body of the belief systems about women and the feminine ideal that are present in
each of these areas involve a combination of established or traditional ideas versus those of a
contemporary and revolutionary nature. Whether traditional or revolutionary these evolving
ideologies played a consistent and prominent role in regulating the methods by which women

Flower painting was thought to be a suitable subject for women to pursue because it occupied a low
rank in the hierarchy of genres which would not intimidate them and it therefore seems that if a
female artist dared enter the masculine sphere of the fine arts she was generally pressured to
conform to the rules that were established by men. It was noted that fruit and flowers are always
welcome from the hands of ladies, which displays the way that women were slowly penetrating the
masculine spheres and being excepted into educational institutions but it also demonstrates the
extent that traditional ideologies about women were still a prominent and consistent issue guiding
their efforts. It may be argued that there are a number of reasons as to why society considered this to
be an appropriate subject matter, however few of them seem to suggest that it was due to the female
artists own, autonomous choice. Firstly, when considering the female artist being limited to produce
her art in the home due to the established belief that this was where she ought to be, one can see how
limited her choice of subject matter becomes simply for practical reasons relating to physical space.

H. P. Lovecraft's Influence In Literature
How could someone become famously known as an author if they have never even written a book in
their lifetime? Well, the acceptance of H. P. Lovecraft as an important American writer, and as the
finest exponent of dark fantasy or (Lovecraftian horror) since Poe, has not come quickly or easily.
Much of this neglect was due to the rejection of "pulp" writers. The primary outlet for his stories
was "Weird Tales", a pulp magazine whose circulation barely reached twenty thousand a month
although its influence on horror fiction has been enormous. His two most famous works were "The
Outsider" and "The Call Of Cthulhu," who's contributions to the supernatural horror genre and
original approach to dark fantasy revitalized the genre and influenced every important new writer in
the field. (Charles 1) H.P Lovecraft was born on August 20th 1890 in Providence, Rhode Island to
parents Winfield Scott Lovecraft and Sarah Susan ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He created his own writing style and even a literary movement known as cosmism. His unique
writing style that he called "Lovecraftian Horror (Some people use it interchangeably with "Cthulhu
Mythos" or "Cosmic Horror") Also Cosmicism (Cosmicism is comprised of several core tenets: 1)
There is no recognizable divine presence; 2) The cosmos and the forces in it are indifferent toward
humanity; and, 3) Humanity is insignificant, and is not the first or the last, nor a particularly special,
species in the universe. Writers who have touched on these concepts include Olaf Stapledon, David
Brin, Stanislaw Lem, and to some extent Arthur C. Clarke. (Davis) In his final years, Lovecraft was
barely able to support himself. He took editing and ghostwriting work to try to make ends meet. But
eventually Lovecraft died of cancer on March 15, 1937, in Providence, Rhode Island. He left behind
more than 60 short stories and a few novel and novellas, including "The Case of Charles Dexter

Theme Of Gender In Twelfth Night

  • 1. Theme Of Gender In Twelfth Night The Struggle of the Sexes in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night The interchangeability of the sexes is a prevalent implication throughout William Shakespeare' Twelfth Night. In fact, the concluding romantic pairings are only introduced, as well as established, at the very end of the play. In addition, gender, either assumed by one character or inferred by one character of another character, proves to be irrelevant when initial attractions develop between characters. This suggests that Shakespeare believed, "homoerotic and heterosexual love [were] not [...] mutually exclusive in a person's makeup" (Lindheim 692). His arbitrary portrayal of gender throughout the play thus creates a work of literature that strays from the conventions of the romance genre of the time. The romance genre has generally been characterized as: "A quest undertaken by a single knight in order to gain a lady's favour; frequently its central interest is courtly love, together with tournaments fought and dragons and monsters slain for the damsel's sake; it stresses the chivalric ideas of courage, loyalty, honor, mercifulness to an opponent, and elaborate manners" (Abrams 48). Twelfth Night can more accurately be defined as a subgenre of the romance, namely the romantic comedy: "A love affair that involves a beautiful and engaging heroine (sometimes disguised as a man); the course of this love does not run smooth, yet overcomes all difficulties to end in a happy union" (Abrams 54). • 3. Japanese Samurai Film Genre Essays The Seven Samurai directed by Akira Kurosawa uses many film techniques and features of the Japanese samurai film genre to engage and influence the viewing audience. The Japanese samurai film genre focuses on the physical martial arts, and is very similar to American westerns. These films are usually set in the Tokugawa era and the main characters are samurai, or Ronin. The Seven Samurai is a stereotypical Japanese samurai movie set in the Tokugawa era about a village full of farmers who hire seven samurai to protect their village from a group of bandits. Kurosawa has used many features of a typical samurai film in The Seven Samurai such as the use of the katana, the samurai were usually clean cut and are seen as socially superior and that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the film when the farmers are walking around the town looking for samurai to help their village it is easy for the farmers and also the viewing audience to tell the difference between the samurai and the peasants. The samurai walk around with pride, they have their chest up and are look above the crowd as if they should not be there with the peasants, and the peasants are hunched over looking at the floor. When the farmers go to the village in search of samurai, Rikichi, one of the farmers, gets down on his knees and begs for the samurai to help his village, many of the samurai just walked past him without blinking an eye, they should not be dealing with peasants, they are superior, they should be answering to lords not peasants. All samurai even Ronin are seen as socially superior and they act that way as well, most of them wouldn't work for the farmers. The samurai thought they shouldn't be employed by mere peasants and that they should work for lords and shoguns. Endings were usually described as bitter sweet as life goes on in the face of tragedy. This feature of the samurai film genre focuses on the end of the film, the endings are usually have someone or a number of important people die, the bitter part, but the main antagonist is also captured or killed, the sweet part. Native Son Sociology The major genre of Native Son is a sociological novel, which is one that "concentrates on the nature, function, and effect of the society in which characters live" (Harmon 487). Throughout the plot, Wright depicts a segregated Chicago and demonstrates the innate social dominance of the whites over the black people. With this setting, Wright explores this social pyramid, showing the injustices towards the black race and the limits and boundaries placed on them as well. Wright especially demonstrates the effects of this racial hierarchy through the character of Bigger Thomas, who represents the potential reactions of the oppressed that can result from the prejudice society. • 7. Character Analysis Of Regina George And Kate Sanders Just as rules and boundaries exist in most of the world, they also make their way into the movie making industry, in particularly in Hollywood films. Hollywood moviemakers focus on relatable, real–life possible events, which they dramatize and turn into big hit blockbusters. In order to categorize their many productions, they use the notion of genre and create their own rules/qualifications to be able to classify movies as such. This categorization even persists within the movies themselves, especially within the extremely popular teen girl genre. Teen girl films focus primarily on the stereotypical junior high/high school life of an adolescent female. Thus, the narrative of the films must contain specific rules and character types that encompass high school life. To make a real seller, the most often–used character type is the so–called 'mean' or 'popular' girl in a social hierarchy based school. In order to be identified as the 'mean and popular' girl character, one must be physically attractive, judgmental/cruel, and be the center of attention. To understand this archetypal character type it is best to examine the two most 'infamous' popular girls in the industry, Regina George, and Kate Sanders. Although, Regina George and Kate Sanders exist in two very distinct narratives, their personality traits are not at all different or unique. Interestingly, since The Lizzie McGuire Movie was produced before Mean Girls, Kate Sanders ends up being the first typical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Art and Video Game Historically video games have been considered a novelty or technical subject, but in recent year given the increase in technology video games have been able to show that they are more. While not a traditional art form, video games do have an artistic basis. Video games are increasingly becoming more story and visually based. With these increased artistic elements it is increasingly becoming harder to deny that video games are art, but maybe they are not the art defined by a traditional definition. Critics state that that video games do not have the artistic values that art has but perhaps there needs to be a new definition of what art is to include video games. Art can be divide in to two different categories, "literacy arts," art forms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Saints Row, a game some would argue immature do to its use of juvenile humor and phallic weapon choices, is in fact a great example of video games maturing as an art form. As seen throughout the history of movies, there is a pattern of genre creation and criticism of the genre through spoofs and satirical works. Saints Row is an example of this development in video games, criticizing the gangster crime genre made notorious by Grand Theft Auto. This development in the genre is an example of a genre referring back to itself and poking holes in some of its conventions, a key element of a maturing medium. Traditionally art has been produced by a single artist, a major criticism of the notion that video games, a collaborative effort of a team, could be considered an art form. This criticism is limited to mainstream video games, though, since many independently developed video games are the works of a small team, as few as two, and they display the most artistic characteristics. Not burdened by the heavy costs of triple–a game development indie developers are able to put their hearts into their games and produce wonderfully artistic games and not worry about if it will sell to the widest audience. These games are evidence of the artistically heights video games can achieve. Video games are a collaborative art form created by a team instead of a singular artisan (Hall). • 11. Five Dimensions Of Hegemonic Masculinity In–depth interviews and participant observation that were conducted confirm that hegemonic masculinity exists inside rock genre. There are five dimensions of hegemonic masculinity that will be explained in this study. First, I will discuss about hegemonic masculinity as a tool to ascertain male domination as previously said by Connell (1987) and Schippers (2002) that takes form in women's interest on rock music. This domination renders masculinity as the real rock fan identity (Eastman, 2012). Masculine identity determined by the men causes men to reject or question women who happen to be in that terrain (Bourdieu, 2001; Yates, 2014). Rejection against women is not only done by men, but even women do so through judgment towards women who do not display masculinity (Howe & Friedman, 2014). Lastly, women rock fans also concur to this domination (Gramsci in Adams & Dickey, 2000). This consent is given by justifying sexist lyrics and continuing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "I wanna see it painted, painted black" : Masculinity as the Norm The previous point has delineated men's roles as a form of hegemonic masculinity. Hegemony manifests itself in mass media in the form of rigid gender roles (Schippers, 2002). Bennett (2009) later adds that hegemonic masculinity is needed inside a community as a conformity towards cultural identity. This point will later elaborate on hegemonic masculinity becoming the identity of a group which consists of rock fans. I gathered that women rock fans associated rock genre with men or masculinity. Tolerance towards men's position inside rock subculture was also shown by opinions of women rock fans regarding their identity as The Fallen as a metalhead. The Fallen is the catchy name that Avenged Sevenfold fans from around the world call themselves. Meanwhile, metalhead refers to rock or metal fans in general. • 13. Discourse Community Analysis In his article "The Concept of Discourse Community," Professor John Swales defines what a discourse community is, following with a list of six different points that a group must align with in order to qualify as a discourse community. These parameters are as follows: "a broadly agreed set of common public goals," "mechanisms of intercommunication among its members," the use of "participatory mechanisms primarily to provide information and feedback", use or possession of "one or more genres in the communicative furtherance of its aims", "some specific lexis", and "a threshold level of members with a suitable degree of relevant content and discoursal expertise" (471–473). After identifying and describing the six points of criteria for qualification, Swales writes that even if just one attribute is missing, it may still be enough to prevent the formation of a discourse community (469). Keeping this in mind, it is important to identify all six points when trying to prove the existence of a discourse community. Due to the presence of all six attributes, I am a part of a discourse community myself. During the summer months, I work as a lifeguard at Avalon Summer Sports Club, a local ... • 15. Cultural Significance Of Teen Films Teen films are the definitive genre that captures the adolescent zeitgeist during the 1980s, and its popularity still hold cultural relevance in the present day. The teen films produced during the 1980s effectively represent youth concerns and the coming–of–age narrative, in terms of adolescent identity, the different roles characters play, sexuality, gender, relationships, class issues and the generational divide. Exploring these issues is essential for recognizing the cultural significance of this specific group of films and how they are important in addressing concerns of the adolescent coming of age narrative. Sex and relationships are recurring themes throughout the genre and are essential elements teen narrative. Their portrayal ranges from comic interactions to serious exchanges and emotional liberation from restrictive forces. Timothy Shary explains the significance of these two thematic threads: "Romantic longing and sexual curiosity take on heightened intensity and profundity for youth in the adolescent years struggle to recognise and cope with the emotional and psychological changes"(2002). The character's experience with sex are usually comedic and linked to sexual discovery and loss of virginity, which are continually present topics in the narrative. It is is often a determinant that shapes teen identity, as well as providing a commentary on societal questions regarding a desire of intimacy. The sexual exploits between the teen male and female investigates teen behavior and the conceptualization of feelings and emotions in their discovery of identity. Another convention which surfaces again and again during the 1980s teen genre is the generational divide that exists in the familial structure, resulting in teens rebelling against adult authority. Within the genre adults are often portrayed in a negative light in both comical and serious ways: teachers are depicted as corrupt and arrogant as incompetent social figures. Comparing Ecotopia And Thomas More's Utopian Genre The Utopian genre has evolved over a number of decades in order to experiment with changing values and ideals of the ever–evolving societies of the times. Thomas More's Utopia defined a new literary genre within the 16th century and onwards, allowing for an array of texts to explore the particular ideals and values that were often preached during the respective time period but never formally recognized. This is also the case for Ernest Callenbach's Ecotopia, a utopian text written in the 1970s, attaching fundamental importance to the restoration of the natural world and the feminist values of Ecotopian society. The development of the genre from the 16th to 20th centuries is evident through the differences in principles that are addressed in each text, all of which are a reflection of the values of their respective time periods. More's Utopia established the existence of the utopian genre, exhibiting a political vision of 16th century Britain. The composer presents a model of an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Netflix's Reconfiguration Of Flow In 2007, Netflix, an online video rental service founded in the late 1990s, changed courses and began to offer a video on demand streaming service that, though not the first of its kind, profoundly altered the way in which viewers watch and categorize televisual texts in the Post–Network Era of streaming and individualization of television viewing. This influence warrants a reconfiguration of Raymond Williams' classic theory of flow as well as of Ethan Thompson's more recent theory, which makes necessary advances by correctly accounting for a shift toward catering to audience tastes, but fails to address the particularities of the streaming platform. This essay argues that what I call "streaming flow", still encourages continual viewing, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Netflix has engendered a generic recategorization of texts into previously established genres, as well as into newly established generic categories meant to organize these diverse texts in new and very specific adjective based genres, such as political dramas or spiritual documentaries, which combine descriptive and generic words meant to capture viewers. This generic specificity also accounts for the fact that texts are often cross–listed across multiple of these traditional and contemporary genres. Additionally, texts are categorized on each user's homepage according to generic categories generated by the user's profile and viewing history, with categories like, "you might also like this" and "because you watched...". In accordance with Mittell's genre theory, which states that genre is a cultural practice situated in larger cultural hierarchies and power relations and accounts for specific attributes of the medium, Netflix's unique genre categories account for the particular attributes of the medium, but also, significantly, of the new digital platform as well. In making these arguments, I analyze the functions of the platform which create "streaming flow", its algorithm, format, and generic categorization, as well as texts such as Arrested Development (2003–) and Stranger Things (2016–), that comprise streaming flow and which are generically categorized by ... • 21. Analysis Of Her Mistress's Clothes By Harriet Cany Peale Her Mistress's Clothes by Harriet Cany Peale is a wonderful example of a composition that identifies African American and Anglo–Saxon women in 1848, displaying the difference of race and their identities within this period. Cany Peale's painting shows an Anglo–Saxon woman engaging with an African American woman, at first glance, one could assume this is a genre painting, that of a peaceful scene demonstrating people in everyday activities ("Genre Painting"). Two women intimately engaging "in a grooming ritual" (Byrd) however this thought is fractured as you see the controlling way the Anglo–Saxon woman holds the bottom of the African American woman's face as she gazes upon herself in the mirror. A spectacle of power and control that is further illustrated as the Anglo–Saxon woman stands slightly taller than the African American, demonstrating the hierarchy and to establishing their identities as Mistress and slave. The slave is compositionally arranged in front of the Mistress in a predominant position, however as noted in our text this week, most of the slaves placed in the foreground of a painting in this era were done so in humor, to tease or to make them look immature (Pohl 278). As the title suggests, this slave has been dressed up by her Mistress in her Mistress's clothing as a way for the Mistress to make fun of the slave, teasing her with a taste of wealth and upper class. 'Scarface' was highly influential within this genre and when it was released there was not the same censorship as there is in the 21st century. Similarly to 'Scarface' and 'The Godfather', violence and crime are key themes in the films and therefore the male characters dominate the violent scenes and radiate willpower. At first, it appears that she is stable within her relationship with Wallace, and is additionally feared by other individuals such as Vincent, when he arrives at her house to escort her for a night out. However, later on Mia mistakes heroin for cocaine and manages to overdose, which results in her relying on the man in her life because she is so weak. Even so, in the promotional poster of 'Pulp Fiction', Uma Thurman (Mia), is shown posing on a bed with a cigarette in one hand and a gun in front of her. This in many ways signifies power as the gun has become a key piece of iconography in the gangster genre, and guns hold a lot of power in them as they have the ability, with help, to kill or cause serious bodily harm. • 27. Perk Of Being A Wallflower, And The Perks Of Being A... To the average American teenager, high school may have seemed like a real–life nightmare. So why is it that so many movies today revolve around this hellish concept? According to David Denby, the author of "High–School Confidential: Notes on Teen Movies", there is a whole genre of these teen films. As explained by Denby, such genre films include stereotypical male and female villains of the social queen or jock type, mixed up emotions and teens rising above the "poisonous system of status, snobbery and exclusion" that is commonly known as high school (Denby 367). By this definition, the film The Perks of Being a Wallflower can be categorized as a teen film. Based on the book published in 1999, The Perks of Being a Wallflower follows Charlie ... When depicted in movies, Denby explains that "these films arise from remembered hurts which then get recast in symbolic form." (Denby 369). In Denby's example, the main character may have suffered from the death of a parent and thus "is ill equipped for the emotional pressures of school." (Denby 369). This can be seen to be incredibly true for the main character of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Through out the film, there are memories brought up from Charlie's past about his best friend's suicide, his Aunt's Death, and his past sexual abuse. For example, when Sam kisses Charlie and rubs his leg, Charlie gets flashbacks of a similar situation in which his adult Aunt sexually abuses him. Due to his past, Charlie is depicted as unable to cope with the problems he faces, through his actions over the course of the film. Charlie takes a passive role in his life. For example, when his sister is abused by her boyfriend, Charlie does not step in. He also doesn't speak up when Mary Elizabeth declares that she and Charlie are dating, though he clearly doesn't have any interest in her. From the audience's point of view, it is known that his passive actions are a result of his emotional problems. This report will discuss two of Cuarón's works, A Little Princess (1995) and Children of Men (2006). Released almost a decade apart, the Disney family film and dystopian drama share many differences but also some important similarities. In particular, the themes of segregation and isolation play a central role in both films and are both adapted to screen using similar film techniques such as use of colour and camera angles. Through an analysis of these key themes, this report will discuss their significance and endurance in Cuarón's wider body of work. The theme of segregation is prevalent throughout both A Little Princess and Children of Men. In the former it is most prevalent in the character of Becky, a black servant girl who is forbidden from speaking to the schoolgirls and is dressed only in rags. There was structure, strict structure at that, and all though this is a subtle structure to the baroque era, it is this structure that is related to the art of ballet we study today. Part of what made the baroque era a defined art was its intensity of aristocrat power, "...the Baroque approach was likely to exhibit some combination of power, massiveness, or dramatic intensity, embellished with pageantry, color, and theatrical adventure" (Guisepi). Reflecting on these words, it makes sense why the ballet we train for today has a certain stoic technique. Ballet was conceived in a royal context. Many think that the appeal of rap music, commonly portrayed with blatant sex, gratuitous violence, countless firearms, copious amounts of drugs, and stacks of seemingly endless money, is somewhat irrelevant or foolish. But you can't ignore the fact that many other genres of music do the same thing. Many old rock and roll songs referenced illegal drugs, other rock songs frequently refer to violence and other crimes of the sort, and modern pop frequently talks about love, sometimes in a very explicit way. Even some operas and classical compositions were written to portray the stories of star–crossed lovers, killing everyone who tried to refute their love. But hip–hop can be more than this. Tom Stoppard and the Crime-Writing Genre Mankind has perpetually maintained a fascination with what constitutes a crime and enjoyed piecing together the clues that authors of the crime genre provide us in solving their mysteries, thus appealing to our curiosity in the darker side of our humanity. The crime–writing genre embodies humankind in its fullest, revealing our potential for both good and evil, a notion that is responsible for the genre's cross–contextual survival and universal appeal. It is due to this undying interest that writers of crime texts have the ability to subvert conventions and thereby deconstruct the philosophical and psychological assumptions that crime fiction is constructed upon. By subverting the conventions of the crime–writing genre, composers are able to more freely explore issues concerning their respective contexts, a significant factor that has contributed to the genre's endurance. When spectators go to the theater, or sit down to watch a movie– musical, they certainly aren't expecting the surprise Little Shop of Horrors brings them. The villain of this tale, Audrey II, is a seemingly innocent venus fly trap with an attitude and, as the audience finds out later, a taste for human blood. It's extremely rare for a musical to have an actual alien–like monster onstage, not just for technical reasons, but because it's hard to ask an audience to suspend disbelief to the point of them believing an animatronic, and sometimes puppeteered, plant is genuinely dangerous. Because of this, Audrey II, who for all intensive purposes will be referred to as a male, is unlike any other character in musical theatre history. However, not only is he a villain the theater world is unfamiliar with, he's a metaphor for so much more. Audrey II is a predestinate, alien–like monster who symbolizes the grotesqueness of greed and power, especially in political climates, and shows how easily the line between survival and longing for world domination can be crossed. Prior to properly excavating the hidden layers of this massive plant, it is important to have a strong base of knowledge regarding archetypes, and more specifically in this case, the alien archetype. The process of mixing ancestries in the union of people of different races was known as mestizaje. Receiving his early training under Ludolph de Jongh in Rotterdam, De Hooch later served his apprenticeship under the landscape painter Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem in Haarlem. He is recorded as a painter and footman to a wealthy merchant–adventurer Justus de la Grange in 1653. In 1654, he married Jannetje van der Burch of Delft, and later he had seven children. Moving to Delft after his marriage, he was registered with the Delft guild and became an independent artist in 1655. During the years in Delft, he produced his most characteristic works. In 1661, he moved to Amsterdam and remained there for the rest of his life. De Hooch's three periods in Rotterdam, Delft, and Haarlem represent his three phases in painting with gradually maturer artistry. This paper uses De Hooch's The Visit, a transitional work that was executed in 1657, his early Delft period, as a case study to examine the development in De Hooch's artistic style in terms of the scene, composition and perspective. The Visit, also titled A Merry Company with Two Men and Two Women, delineates an familiar but interesting scene in which two women entertain two visiting gentlemen in a seventeenth–century Dutch living room. How Did The Black Plague Affect Society The Black Plague was the worst pandemic in history, wiping out nearly a third of the population of Europe during the 13th century, but it can also be considered a turning point of history. In order to communicate with each other, we all meet up and practice together. We occasionally get emails from the professor telling us important dates and lessons. We use those mechanisms of communication in order to slowly improve as a group. Between our meetings and the emails, I think that the emails are the genre of the discourse community. While meeting as a group is important, it can be difficult and confusing based on the person. The emails that the professor sends are a genre because it is understood by everyone. They are useful because of the help they give students in the community, and it doesn't require a specific lexicon to know what is being said. There aren't many rules for the class, but it there are hidden ones. They are mainly common sense things like participate with the class, show up, and be on time. In the lab, it is important to have the necessary vocabulary to understand the class. Language is a key component to pass the lecture course. If you don't know the difference between adagio and allegro, it is difficult to keep up with the class. Knowledge about music terms is completely necessary because it is all of the things we're graded on. We were all required to know terms like dynamics, rhythm, and what is on a staff. The goal in the lecture is to understand key concepts of music, in order to improve ourselves when we play in the lab section of the class. In the community regardless of if we're experienced or new to music, we all learn everything through practice and watching the professor perform. In the lecture portion of the class, the main goal is to have knowledge about the terms in music. The class is all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 56. Sublime In Frankenstein Essay Most Gothic novels aim to show the sinister side of human nature. They depict the dark terrors which lie beneath the reader 's mentality. The term "Gothic" suggests a genre which deals with frightening and mysterious settings by giving connotations of ghostly castles and supernatural events. The Sublime experience as stated by the critic Longinus is, "…a matter of treatment. The particular form of the sublime experience that requires prepossessing objects is not only the form; it is simply the form in which enthusiasm preponderates over irony" [1] . The Castle of Otranto is the first Gothic novel written by Horace Walpole in which the idea of the Sublime is presented through its physical, transcending and overpowering imagery. This ... Edmund Burke a theorist stated in his works that, "…Whatever is fitted in any sort to excite the ideas of pain and danger; that is to say, whatever is in any sort terrible, or is conversant about terrible objects or operates in a manner analogous to terror, is a source of the sublime" [2] . The critic attempts to assemble an authoritative definition of the sublime here. Furthermore Gothic castles were built as symbols of systematic power; they were definite assertions of ambition that rested on the owner 's control of others. A sense of empowerment is suggested through this idea therefore indicating to the Sublime having a dominant role in the Gothic genre. Intended to convey a disputing power, Walpole implies images of force, hierarchy, stability and command in the novel. The Castle Of Otranto, attempts to capture a sense of realism through its illustration of settings and characters. Burke commented that: "whatever is fitted to produce such a tension must be productive of a passion similar to terror; and consequently must be a source of the sublime, though it should have no idea of danger connected with it" [3] . Consequently the Sublime is shown to be produced by a passion which is closely related to terror, this is evident through the tension created by the settings and characters; a sense of terror is illustrated. The novel was an original Gothic behind the overthrow of the Roman Empire, therefore Gothic at the time applied to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 58. The Portrayal Of Women In Western Genre In Western genre, women are repeatedly portrayed as either the helpless damsel in distress or the wild saloon girl. Most Western movies have elements of a gunfight, rivalry, redemption, and/or romance written into the script. A large percentage of the stereotypes of the American West comes from these exaggerated characters and storylines. Very rarely do western films present a strong female lead. When they do, there is frequently a subplot of romance written into it. Few Western genre and cinema portray the true nature of what women in the West were like. In Marcia Mullers "Sweet Cactus Wine", the female protagonist Katy is not what most people think when they read Western genre. Portrayed as an independent, widowed woman who makes her own ... • 60. Analysis Of Burial Rites By Hannah Kent Burial Rites is a novel based on a true story by Hannah Kent, which provides a voice to Agnes Magnusdottir, a convicted criminal who was executed for a crime she may or may not have committed. Kent conveys the historical genre through the novel and utilises setting in order to engage readers by including modes of communication, transport and the way of life in the 1800's that are not commonly used anymore. Throughout the novel, Kent optimises dialogue through the use of old terms and utilising old court documents which place readers in the 1800's, engaging them in a historical event that has been silenced. Burial Rites explores the historical aspect of this compelling, real life tale through setting by using horses as transport, letters as communication and execution as a punishment for murder. Horses are no longer commonly used as a mode of transport and letters are generally no longer used as a form of communication, however, Kent optimises these historical features in her novel by including predominant ways of life in the 1800's. This effectively engages the readers as it sets them in an alternative world. In the 1800's, when Agnes' life was taken not knowing if she was innocent or not, death was her sentence. Kent includes this within the novel to enhance the historical genre as in many countries of the world today, it is usually 20 years in prison for murder Setting functions to engage readers through placing them in a time and place foreign to them, as today, many ... • 62. Distinction Analysis : Pierre Bourdieu 's Theory Of Social... Distinction reminds me of my school days in Korea. There were always popular kid groups from wealthy families and whenever they worn new and fancy brand shoes and bags, the fashion became an epidemic among peers in schools. Many kids tried to buy the same clothing and to be looked like the popular kids groups. Even a lot of parents wanted to be close to parents of those kids and to share private education lessens that the popular kids took out side of class. In Distinction, Pierre Bourdieu explains the dominant class determines what higher or lower culture is then; the lower class accepts the choice. Also, the aesthetic choice shows class distinction and presents people's social position in our society. Even if his theories were established in France during the 1960's, Bourdieu's argument is still effective and useful in contemporary society. The author, Pierre Bourdieu is a French socialist and his work often stressed the capitalism of social life different from traditional idealists. In Distinction, he uses quantitative and geometric data analysis, empirical research and survey that were conducted in France during 1963–1968 to support his theories. Bourdieu claims that individual person's status in the social space is defined by multiple aspects of capital that they own. He focuses more on cultural capital, which is not related to financial assets or economic meanings such as education, intellectual ability, style of speech and attires. • 64. We Didn 't Start The Fire, By Billy Joel There is no denying that over a multitude of years, music has inevitably found ways to challenge power and power structures around the world. Music has found a way to use not only lyrics, but also the gender of musicians and genres of music to oppose powerful entities. Throughout music 's long lived history, lyrics have been the most obvious example of musical oppositions to power. Music and songs have been created to protest wars, raise awareness to violence, express pride in one 's race and culture, and challenge political forums, only to name a few examples. For example, "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel was created to oppose United States involvement in the Vietnam War, along with raising awareness of both drug and race problems in America. Furthermore, lyrics are a way in which an artist or composer can specifically tailor a message to explicitly state their take on a given institution or outlet of power. On the other hand, lyrics have also been used in a coded fashion to indirectly attack structures of power rather than explicitly attacking structure of power, which has been proven useful in times of serious civil oppression. Lyrics tell a story, and historically singers and songwriters have used them in a multitude of ways to construct a variety of messages that have challenged societal norms and structures of power. Additionally, there is no denying that the gender of the composer or artist plays a critical role in challenging power dynamics. Female artists ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. The Armies: The Battle Of The Pentagon The Armies has often come under critical scrutiny as a literary journalistic text that amalgamates fictional narratives with factual information of the October 1967 Peace March on the Pentagon to protest against Vietnam War. The Armies shows the literary talents of Mailer, the journalist, who have an inner desire, not to tell the news objectively, but to narrate, interpret, and reflect upon such news subjectively. The text is divided into two books as indicated in the subtitle. The first book, entitled "The History as a Novel: The Steps of the Pentagon", tells the story of the March and Mailer's active participation in it (historical fact) from the highly subjective perspective of the author (narrative technique). Moreover, in an attempt to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It also paves the way for the text to have a sequel, the second Book, entitled "The Novel as History: The Battle of the Pentagon". In the second book, as its title indicates, the author adopts a highly objective and omniscient point of view in an attempt to give a realistic account of "the Battle of the Pentagon" that occurred after the arrest of the protagonist between the demonstrators and the police. Therefore, the framework of the text indicates that it has two–fold perspectives in dealing with the political issue of the war in Vietnam. The first book presents a subjective view from within the march. As a fiction, it unravels the protagonist's personal experience and his involvement in the March. In the second book, Mailer, the author, puts on the cloak of the journalist or the historian who objectively and omnisciently accounts for the March as an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. Reflection Of A Discourse Community John Swales (1990), professor of linguistics, defines a discourse community as an exclusive group of people brought together by a common goal. According to John Swales (1990), every discourse community has six characteristics that makes them a discourse community. Overall the group must have a shared goal, in which they communicate with each other through different genres and lexis they have developed; genres are different types of communication that the group employ and lexis is the specialized language utilized by that particular discourse community. They also tend to have a hierarchy within the group and require individual group members to truly participate to be counted as a part of the discourse community. (p. 471–73) The data ... Students usually are concentrated more on getting the TA's opinion on their problems, I wanted to see what was happening in a small group without the TA's input. There shared goal was obviously to pass their chemistry class, especially because chemistry is known to be a very rigorous and difficult course to pass. This particular TASL workshop required the students come to every meeting because it counted for a portion of their overall grade in their actual chemistry class. They were given a packet of chemistry problems by the TA to complete together by assigning each member a portion of the assignment. Each of the packet's five problems were broken into smaller parts to be assigned to each group member for them to get everyone's input and perspective. It forced the other people in the group to participate or at least pay attention to each person completing a part of the problem because if they didn't it would throw the rest of the problem off. This gave them the opportunity to see from each other's different perspectives to get a better understanding of chemistry. • 74. A Popular Model Designed By Bruce W. Tuckman So what are genres? When most people are asked this question they will reply with something like science fiction, horror, mystery, or romance. While these are not fundamentally wrong answers, those with such responses do not understand the full breadth of what genres truly are. According to the dictionary, a genre is "a class or category of artistic endeavor having a particular form, content, technique, or the like" (Genre). Still though this does not capture the full breadth of what a genre really is. To explain how genres form, dynamically change, and serve their purposes we must first take a step back and look at some other fundamental concepts. A popular model designed by Bruce W. Tuckman suggests that all groups experience five phases: forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning (Gulati 439–440). At our cores, humans seek to be accepted and acknowledged by others. We seek to form social hierarchies to find meaning the areas we are passionate about. This part of human nature is nothing new, it is something programmed deep into our genes for millennia. It happens before our eyes every day; sports fans meet in stadiums, video game fans meet at conventions, artists meet at exhibitions, and so on. People of similar interest meet, one way or another, and are drawn together by their passion. Some groups remain small friend circles, while others may grow vastly to be composed of millions of members. These vast communities, known as discourse communities, ... Traditional Ideologies Of Women During The Victorian Period The Victorian period was an era of constantly shifting and contradicting ideologies concerning women, which extended over many areas of society and culture including politics and the media, the family and domestic field as well as the contemporary and traditional beliefs within the art institutions. The body of the belief systems about women and the feminine ideal that are present in each of these areas involve a combination of established or traditional ideas versus those of a contemporary and revolutionary nature. Whether traditional or revolutionary these evolving ideologies played a consistent and prominent role in regulating the methods by which women produced their art and the subject areas and genres in which they employed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Flower painting was thought to be a suitable subject for women to pursue because it occupied a low rank in the hierarchy of genres which would not intimidate them and it therefore seems that if a female artist dared enter the masculine sphere of the fine arts she was generally pressured to conform to the rules that were established by men. It was noted that fruit and flowers are always welcome from the hands of ladies, which displays the way that women were slowly penetrating the masculine spheres and being excepted into educational institutions but it also demonstrates the extent that traditional ideologies about women were still a prominent and consistent issue guiding their efforts. It may be argued that there are a number of reasons as to why society considered this to be an appropriate subject matter, however few of them seem to suggest that it was due to the female artists own, autonomous choice. Firstly, when considering the female artist being limited to produce her art in the home due to the established belief that this was where she ought to be, one can see how limited her choice of subject matter becomes simply for practical reasons relating to physical space. Also, to consider again the ideal Victorian female who is seen as delicate and considered closer to nature than men, flowers seem to be an appropriate theme not only because they can be physically accessible to women in the home and garden, but also because ... • 78. H. P. Lovecraft's Influence In Literature How could someone become famously known as an author if they have never even written a book in their lifetime? Well, the acceptance of H. P. Lovecraft as an important American writer, and as the finest exponent of dark fantasy or (Lovecraftian horror) since Poe, has not come quickly or easily. Much of this neglect was due to the rejection of "pulp" writers. The primary outlet for his stories was "Weird Tales", a pulp magazine whose circulation barely reached twenty thousand a month although its influence on horror fiction has been enormous. His two most famous works were "The Outsider" and "The Call Of Cthulhu," who's contributions to the supernatural horror genre and original approach to dark fantasy revitalized the genre and influenced every important new writer in the field.
