She talks about her daily life which involves the caring of the children and looking after the house,
both very domestic features, and most of the story, and her life, are set in and around the house. As
the strongest maternal character in the story, her descriptions of the children are often loving but she
is not afraid to talk truthfully about their bad aspects. The narrative following the main character's
growth from children to adults, the five marriages that take place in the two households, and the
changes of character's hierarchy in society, all very domestic elements. Though Nelly has this
maternal view and love of the younger generations under her care, she is still frightened by them,
notably during Heathcliff's final days with his sudden metamorphosis in mood from his general
sullenness to being "uncommonly animated" (Brontë 328). During this time Nelly is quite unnerved
by his drastically changed demeanour and one night goes to take him some supper. She is terrified
by what she sees in his room, "The light flashed on his features... I cannot express what a terrible
view I got, by that momentary view! Those deep black eyes! That smile, and ghastly paleness! It
appeared to me, not Mr Heathcliff, but a goblin; and in my terror, I let the candle bend towards the

John Swales (1990), professor of linguistics, defines a discourse community as an exclusive group
of people brought together by a common goal. According to John Swales (1990), every discourse
community has six characteristics that makes them a discourse community. Overall the group must
have a shared goal, in which they communicate with each other through different genres and lexis
they have developed; genres are different types of communication that the group employ and lexis is
the specialized language utilized by that particular discourse community. They also tend to have a
hierarchy within the group and require individual group members to truly participate to be counted

It was easier to figure out the functions and the mechanisms of this group because there were only
about eleven students. I focused more on the interactions between the students, instead of looking
farther into the communication between the TA and the students. Students usually are concentrated
more on getting the TA's opinion on their problems, I wanted to see what was happening in a small
group without the TA's input. There shared goal was obviously to pass their chemistry class,
especially because chemistry is known to be a very rigorous and difficult course to pass. This
particular TASL workshop required the students come to every meeting because it counted for a
portion of their overall grade in their actual chemistry class. They were given a packet of chemistry
problems by the TA to complete together by assigning each member a portion of the assignment.
Each of the packet's five problems were broken into smaller parts to be assigned to each group
member for them to get everyone's input and perspective. It forced the other people in the group to
participate or at least pay attention to each person completing a part of the problem because if they
didn't it would throw the rest of the problem off. This gave them the opportunity to see from each
other's different perspectives to get a better understanding of chemistry. By making the students

So what are genres? When most people are asked this question they will reply with something like
science fiction, horror, mystery, or romance. While these are not fundamentally wrong answers,
those with such responses do not understand the full breadth of what genres truly are. According to
the dictionary, a genre is "a class or category of artistic endeavor having a particular form, content,
technique, or the like" (Genre). Still though this does not capture the full breadth of what a genre
really is. To explain how genres form, dynamically change, and serve their purposes we must first
take a step back and look at some other fundamental concepts. A popular model designed by Bruce
W. Tuckman suggests that all groups experience five phases: forming, storming, norming,
performing, and adjourning (Gulati 439–440). At our cores, humans seek to be accepted and
acknowledged by others. We seek to form social hierarchies to find meaning the areas we are
passionate about. This part of human nature is nothing new, it is something programmed deep into
our genes for millennia. It happens before our eyes every day; sports fans meet in stadiums, video
game fans meet at conventions, artists meet at exhibitions, and so on. People of similar interest
meet, one way or another, and are drawn together by their passion. Some groups remain small friend
circles, while others may grow vastly to be composed of millions of members. These vast

The Victorian period was an era of constantly shifting and contradicting ideologies concerning
women, which extended over many areas of society and culture including politics and the media, the
family and domestic field as well as the contemporary and traditional beliefs within the art

Flower painting was thought to be a suitable subject for women to pursue because it occupied a low
rank in the hierarchy of genres which would not intimidate them and it therefore seems that if a
female artist dared enter the masculine sphere of the fine arts she was generally pressured to
conform to the rules that were established by men. It was noted that fruit and flowers are always
welcome from the hands of ladies, which displays the way that women were slowly penetrating the

their lifetime? Well, the acceptance of H. P. Lovecraft as an important American writer, and as the

Much of this neglect was due to the rejection of "pulp" writers. The primary outlet for his stories
