The Private Memoirs And Confessions Of A Justified Sinner
The history of gothic literature is a discussion of how the classic gothic literature has morphed into
today's contemporary gothic literature. From the beginning days of gothic writing one of the main
focuses has been on the issues that were relevant in the county or world at the time. Most people
think of gothic writings as a scary story of gloom and doom, but there are many aspects that
encompass a gothic writing. The true is that there are many elements to a gothic writing. The writer
does not need to use all of them at the same time, but to use some of them to make it a gothic
writing. As technology and the social atmosphere have evaluated writers have incorporated these
elements into their writing. Gothic literature is said to have ... Show more content on

(Ringel) Mary Snodgrass points out, "Decades before Sigmund Freud provided a paradigm for the
human psyche, echoes of disturbing behaviors forced readers of gothic literature to interpret subtexts
of prejudice, classism, and abnormality in thought and action: in the motivation for James Hogg's
The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner." (Snodgrass) Many people of authority
in America believed that the gothic genre was source of outside evil on the new world. This is
supported by Reverend Enos Hitchcock's Memoirs of the Bloomsgrove Family, in which he "blames
the corruption of young women in the new nation on "foreign writings and foreign manners" and
prays "May this rising empire cease to import both the one and the other!" (Ringel) The 1800's rang
in a new era of writers and twist on the gothic style. One of the major contributors was Edgar Allan
Poe with stories and poetry that still resonates with high schoolers to this day. Works that are still
read or at the very least spoken of in high school are stories by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman

Cubism and Multiplicity of Narration in the Waste Land
Cubism and Multiplicity of Narration in The Waste Land
Abstract
The aim of this essay is to consider the multiplicity of narration in The Waste Land and its
relationship in enrichment of content and meaning in the poem. There is an attempt to convey the
Cubist traits and find concrete examples in the poem. This study will try to specify evidences for
conformity of cubism and multiplicity of narration in the poem. While Eliot juxtaposed so many
perspectives in seemingly set of disjointed images, there is "painful task of unifying .., jarring and
incompatible perspectives" in The Waste Land. Like a cubist painting, there is a kind of variety of
narration in unity through the poem. The usage of different languages and narrations in the poem ...

Part of this sense of the totality of the modern self adding up to a fractured variety emerges, not just
from the shifting sense of the images and the multiplicity of narration , but also from the variety in
the verse style. It's as if in the modern age, there cannot be a single authoritative way of expressing
how one feels. There is not enough confidence in the forms of language itself. Just as the traditional
community has become the unreal city, a vision of a modern inferno. So The Waste Land is
abundant with multiplicity of narration in different language and set of seemingly disordered
images.
The images in The Waste Land are supported by two distinct ways of narration. The lyric voice
opening the poem uses metaphoric, often symbolic images and speaks in repetitive, stylized syntax.
It has suggested on the one hand order and propriety, and on the other hand stasis. This voice speaks
with authority and finality as it recurs in scenes throughout the poem where the vision of barrenness
and revulsion from life is intensely clear and controlled. This voice contrasts with many voices
speaking in metonymically rendered narrative scenes full of movement and change. These other
voices resist categorization. These voices rang from vivid characters such as Marie, the hyacinth
girl, Stetson's friend, Madame Sosostris, the nervous woman, the pub woman, Tiresias, and the
Thames daughters,

Charles Baudelaire
Charles Baudelaire's poem 'L'Ennemi' from his famous collection Les Fleurs du Mal is a poem
which criticises times, specifically the progression of time, using the extended metaphor of seasons
passing along with a lexical field of natural imagery. Whilst fruits and flowers are discussed
throughout this poem, Baudelaire's true subject matter is his own poems and his struggle to write
them as he has become weary over time and has used up all his ideas and is unable to create any
others. Time is held responsible for this. However, many critics have argued that the enemy of the
poem is not in fact time, but something else. The poem remains ambiguous in this sense, but what is
certain is that Baudelaire is trying to demonstrate that good can come ... Show more content on

This continues on from the progression of seasons, indicating time passing, seen in the first quatrain.
Opening the quatrain with 'voilà que' demonstrates that what Baudelaire is about to describe is a
consequence of what he described in the first quatrain, namely the metaphorical storms of childhood
which still effect him today. Autumn, symbolic of death, suggests the death of Baudelaire's
imagination in the sense that he can no longer think of any poems to write. The 'automne des idées'
suggests that, whilst there was once a time for ideas (possibly during the 'brillants soleils' of
childhood), this time has passed; something which is reflective of Baudelaire's pessimistic views of
the 'progress' being made in the world. In the second line, Baudelaire uses the metaphor of physical
labour to elucidate the idea of the mind working hard to be more creative. The idea of digging could
represent planting seeds (either for fruit or plants) which will then bloom into ideas for poems;
continuing this extended metaphor. The use of everyday items and the suggestion of the physical
(rather than the mental which is actually being discussed) leads to a visual illustration of the disaster
being described. Furthermore, the use of the indicative in this line suggests that what Baudelaire is
saying is applicable to, not only himself, but also his readers; it

Rodin's Influence On The Gates Du Mal
The foremost, and the most impressive influence on the Gates of Hell is by its namesake, the 16th
century epic Inferno. The first of a three piece long epic by Dante Alighieri, it described Dante's
descent into hell. After choosing his inspiration for his sculpture, Rodin closely studied Dante's
masterpiece, though likely in a French translation, speaking of carrying it about with him. While
Rodin was looser than some of his predecessors in the story telling of the gates ("The Gates of
Hell." Rodin Museum), notable figures from literature emerge. On top of the door are reside the
Shades, somewhere in the mess of people are Paolo et Francesca, and Ugolino is emerges from an

Outside of the more obvious influences of its namesake, Rodin's Gates were influenced by other
sources of art and literature. The most prevalent and prominent is the work of Charles Baudelaire,
specifically Les Fleurs du Mal. Les Fleurs du Mal was Baudelaire's poetic masterpiece, consisting of
over a hundred poems in any of its additions, all somewhat intertwined with one another. The
importance behind Baudelaire's works, however, lies not in the poetic mastery, but in the bleak and
rather gritty feelings the poems induced, focused around the "general human predicament"(
Burton.). These dark poems, banned at one time after their publication, were a great inspiration to
Rodin, seeking to create his own grim and slightly disturbed feel for his hell. The influence of
Baudelaire is most clearly documented on Rodin's Je Suis Belle named from the first line of
Baudelaire's poem La Beauté, "Je suis belle, ô mortels! comme un rêve de pierre," (Baudelaire). The
first stanza is engraved in the base of the sculpture, further driving the connection. (Figure 1). The
figures that make up this piece, known as The Falling Man and The Crouching Women/Lust are
found within the gates, and thus make a very visible and physical connection for the poet's
influence. An additional connection that Rodin had to Baudelaire was 1884,

Sunday Afternoon On The Island Of The Grande Latte Summary
Before nineteen century, most artworks depicted religious of mythological or religious scenes, and
the purpose of the artwork was telling a story and instructing people. And artists were always
working for wealthy people or church. However, with the rapid development of science and society,
the Industrial Revolution have changed the manufacturing, transportation, and technology, which
also affect the way people live, travel and work. And with the great expand of city and prosperous of
urban center, people flocked to cities to get new jobs and city life, which speeded up the
urbanization in a unprecedented way and made many modern cities like Paris, and the modernism
has straight impact on its people, in its public space, on its popular entertainments, and most
importantly, on artists. At that time, artists started to making arts of new ideas or things they
interested in, and some of them even experimented with the expressive use of color, new material
and new techniques and mediums, which led to the invention of "Neo–Impressionism", a new genre
of paintings. And in this essay, I'm going to talk about the representation of "Neo–Impressionism":

"Earth's a cake...and full of sweetness." These are the words of Charles Baudelaire, who was one of
the most compelling poets of the nineteenth century. Born in Paris on April 9, 1821, Baudelaire was
a notable French poet who was known for his controversial poems. He also worked as an essayist,
an art critic, and even as a pioneering translator of Edgar Allan Poe, whom he called his "twin soul".
Charles Baudelaire published his first collection of verse poetry, "Les Fleurs du Mal" or "The
Flowers of Evil" in 1857. This collection consisted of 100 poems that dealt with a range of themes
which included love, time, sexuality, and human existence. Due to being too erotic and obscene, six
of these poems were banned. Les Fleurs du mal became a byword ... Show more content on

The Earth figuratively being a cake is a symbol that states that the content of the earth is full of
sweetness and joy. In addition, this line is also a metaphor, it describes the earth to be a cake which
in a literal sense is not true but is used to make a comparison between two unlike things such as the
earth and a cake to provide symbolism. The deeper meaning of the line reveals that there are many
positives to take from the world as life is sweet like a cake and should be consumed. Baudelaire
expresses that happiness is all around "and full of sweetness" which declares that there is happiness
within all aspects of life. The voice then speaks to the subject and states that "I can give you an
appetite of equal size" the voice is saying that it can bring joy and happiness to the subject so then
there would be no end to the subject's pleasure. Furthermore the voice comforts the subject and
wants the subject to be happy and realize that there is joy all around him. This is evident because in
line five and six, the voice "sang" to him and "caressed" him; Baudelaire uses the word "sang"
which has a positive connotation of beauty and joy rather than chanted or mumbled which implies a

Revealing In Oscar Wilde's The Picture Of Dorian Gray
One thing that happens to everyone in life, is confronting the reality of growing up, which comes
with the aspect of maturity. As one matures, they are subject to many things that ultimately change
their very being. Oscar Wilde portrays this within The Picture of Dorian Gray by having the
protagonist, Dorian, encounter a plethora of moral and philosophical dilemmas, that are represented
through the physical aspects of Victorian life. Revealing that becoming corrupt in some way is
inevitable if one is to live in the world of man, that which corrupts one's self comes in many forms.
In a society such as Victorian England, the views of the general public and of persons with higher
social status often reform one's morals in the course of maturing. Those who are perceived to be
divinely beautiful by the masses, who have terrible rumours about themselves, are often still treated
as innocent because of their beauty. "Sin is a thing that writes itself across a man's face. It cannot be
concealed. People talk sometimes of secret vices...If a wretched man has a vice, it shows itself in the
lines of his mouth, the droop of his eyelids the moulding of his hands even...But you, Dorian, with
your pure , bright, innocent face...I can't believe anything against you"(Wilde 127). Basil basically
states that sin is for the ugly, for those who have sinned will forever wear it because of how it will
always affect one's visage. Such an inference can not only be made from what Basil tells Dorian,

Existentialism in The Stranger and "Le Cygne"
Albert Camus, in his famous novel The Stranger, and Charles Baudelaire, in one of his famous
poems from the collection Les Fleurs du Mal, "Le Cygne," both express a common theme of the
absurdity of life stemming from the philosophical ideal of Existentialism. In their portrayals of a
man devoid of most emotion, Andromache, and a swan, Baudelaire and Camus express this ideal of
absurd actions and pointless existence.
Existentialism has several main points that are expressed in both The Stranger and "Le Cygne"
including the free will of humankind, the responsibility of humans to accept the consequences of
their actions and the indifference of the world to the struggles of mankind. Absurdism, a branch of
the traditional existentialist view, is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only does she suffer the loss of her husband, but also she cannot even have his body for a proper
burial since he was lost at sea. She therefore is pictured in the eternal absurd state of mourning
without even a physical body to mourn and with an existence as empty as the tomb beside her. There
is no way out of her misery. Camus' Meursault experiences this exact same feeling of hopelessness
during his time in prison, "Now, there was no way out, and no one can imagine what nights in prison
are like" (Camus 81). During his time in prison before his hearing, Meursault spends much time
pondering those words that resonated so much with him from a conversation with one of the nurses
at Maman's funeral, "there was no way out" (Camus 17). This idea that there is "no way out" of the
endless cycle of absurd meaninglessness of life reflected in both Andromache and Meursault is

Essay on Eco-Poetics Reading in The Wate Land by T.S. Eliot
What is an eco–poetics reading of T. S. Eliot's, 'The Waste Land'?
In this discussion of Eliot's poem I will examine the content through the optic of eco–poetics. Eco–
poetics is a literary theory which favours the rhizomatic over the arborescent approach to critical
analysis. The characteristics of the rhizome will provide the overarching structure for this essay.
Firstly rhizomes can map in any direction from any starting point. This will guide the study of
significant motifs in 'The Waste Land.' Secondly they grow and spread, via experimentation within a
context. This will be reflected in the study of the voice and the language with which the poem
opens. Thirdly rhizomes grow and spread regardless of breakage. This will allow for an ... Show

Charles Baudelaire Les Fleurs Du Mal
In Charles Baudelaire Les Fleurs du Mal, the condition of modern mankind is explored with both
condemnation and celebration. Baudelaire expresses emerging emotional states, flawed fascinations,
and new forms of beauty that he finds himself surrounded by. These themes are all centered around
the common thread of modernity. He focuses only on things that are unique to the present. The
beauty of modernity is the only beauty worthwhile to Baudelaire, despite the mainstream effort to
silence modern movements with more traditionalist values. Modernity is a focus and beauty that
constantly changes, it is enjoyed in fleeting moments, intolerant to nostalgic dwelling. One
emerging modern state of mind in particular catches the attention of Baudelaire. ... Show more

He hates it, but he loves the conditions from which it sprouts. It is a defining factor of modernity
and in modern life Baudelaire finds new beauty and truth. He knows the contrary pleasure in
displeasure, and sees boredom as the opportune call to action for the modern man. He offers a
solution to the slavery to boredom,"It is Time to get drunk! If you are not to be martyred slaves of
Time, be perpetually drunk! With wine, with poetry, or with virtue, as you please" (Baudelaire, "Get
Drunk," 81). Passion is they key to having meaningful endeavors in the modern lifetime. Lacking
clear focus and goals is not a hindrance as it once was within traditionalist values, blind enthusiasm
is better than lacking enthusiasm completely. The modern self must remain an open vessel, like a
drunk, seeing opportunity in the mundane. Or you might pour yourself into passion through art and
creation, materializing your enthusiasm and existence. Or the modern self can strive for a self
improvement. The key lies in disregarding instant gratification and indifference to opt for
meaningful experience and slow payoff. This does not mean that being "drunk" is a surefire escape
from boredom, rather that the modern man and women use their boredom as a mechanism to propel
themselves into greater possibility, as an excuse to "get

Charles Baudelaire Critique Essay
Final Critique
The topic of this critique about Charles Baudelaire is kind of an insight into the background of his
life. His life was filled with an immense amount of mental and physical suffering. Charles was an
alcoholic and had lots of drug addictions. He seemed to dwell in his own problems and self–pity (p.
93).
In the poem "The Dog and the Scent Bottle" there are examples of his self–regard. This poem
explained how his life went up and down and all the problems he had to overcome. It is noted to be
"garbage" and was rejected (as he was in life). Another example of his vulgar techniques is found in
the poem "Carrion". His idea of transgressed existence is interpreted ... Show more content on

I would have to say that the critic was very successful in persuading me, the reader, to lean towards
his views of this author. As soon as I read this essay I was easily persuaded into thinking the man in
this poem was probably a loner, and a drunk. I came to the conclusion that he based his works on his
personal strengths and weaknesses. An example of this would be in two of his works, "Allegory"
and Metamorphoses of a Vampire" each describing a woman. In each, the women are both
prostitutes but they go on from there to two different routes. One maintains her purity while the
other is a temptress who sucks the life out of her helpless victims. The critic takes these two points
and forms his assumption. Baudelaire had not given up hope on ultimate purity even under the skin
of a prostitute. I find that to be a strong example of strength he may have.
Both of these poems relate to Charles Baudelaire's life because they both explain how the ups and
downs go. No matter what happens in life you should never give up hope and always have faith until
the end regarding anything you do. He writes a lot of poems about what he had previously
experienced in his life and always hints that it's not easy but never give up.
The critic did an excellent job getting his views across. He knew the works well enough to relate
them to Baudelaire's life and he worked with the history of his life.

Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Baudelaire have always shared a mystical relationship that was a

the work of both authors will reveal similarities in terms of style, themes and characters, and

Dennison (2001) clarifies that in Baudelaire's poems we have a continuous feeling of the concept of
interest love that will turns out to be a menacing death. This makes the reader feel the evil seduction
of women who will tend at the end of a relationship to kill the man and/or consume him
(Baudelaire's "Le Metamorphose du Vampire"). "The poet kisses what destroys him and he becomes
his own vampire "(Dennison, 2001). Of course this is how Baudelaire described the woman mind
and what he saw in it as a taunting ambiguity in a metaphorical way. In an analysis of Baudelaire's
life, Mills (n.d) explains that man has two characteristics according to Baudelaire. One is the love of
Beauty and the other is the sensual love. Those two characteristic are, according to Mills (n.d), the
origin of all kind of sins for Baudelaire. In further analysis we notice in all his poem how lethal is
the beauty of women. Mills (n.d) adds that in his poems, Baudelaire's love cycle are reflected, but
without the ability of the reader to know it or at least take conscious of who it is directed. Dennison

Fascination with the dead is one major aspect of the Victorian era, to the point where post–mortem
photography, or photographing the recently deceased was a popular practice; there is, without a
doubt, a suggestion of necrophilia. Naturally, this interest is reflected in Victorian literature and art,
where women are frequently portrayed as dead or in some other static position, such as sleeping or
as a statue. These stationary women are time and again included in the works of two representative
writers of the Victorian era: Charles Baudelaire and his greatest admirer, Algernon Charles
Swinburne. Both Baudelaire's "The Murderer's Wine" and Swinburne's "The Leper" contain

towards their lovers are unconventional, they are nonetheless acts of love.
A poem included in Les Fleurs du mal, or The Flowers of Evil, in "The Murderer's Wine,"
Baudelaire seems to expose the evils of alcohol as factors that contribute to the speaker's violence.
While this is true, upon closer reading, it becomes more obvious that the speaker's violence is

Poetry Of Charles Baudelaire's Les Fleurs Du Mal
French poet Charles Baudelaire is undisputably one of the greatest names in poetry. Pioneer of
symbolism and modernity, which is designating the fleeting experience of life in urban metropolis,
he was influence to many, from Verlaine to Rimbaud. Persecuted by many, for his innovativeness
and boldness to write about taboo themes such as eroticism, profane love and death, he never
stopped creating until his death at age 44. Baudelaire's most famous body of work is collection of
140 poems, called Les Fleurs du mal. Collection is divided into 6 thematically segregated sections.
Through the book, poet is confessing his dreams, hopes, failures and sins. Unlike traditional poetry,
he doesn't rely on serene beauty of the natural world to convey emotions, he rather thinks that
modern poetry must evoke artificial aspects of life, but that is because he believes beauty can evolve
on it's own, irrespective to nature and even fueled by sin. The result is a clear line between two
worlds, the world of the ideal and the world of the real, where you can get to the world of ideal
through drugs and alcohol. First section is called Spleen and Ideal. In opening poem, "To the

Summary Of Charles Pierre Baudelaire
Throughout time, France has become home to some of the world's most renown authors and literary
works. France is located in Western Europe and because of this, is a prominent figure in many
political, social, and artistic domains. As specified by Kids National Geographic (2017), "France,
the largest country in Western Europe, has long been a gateway between the continent's northern and
southern regions" (Kids National Geographic, 2017). Accordingly, France has undergone a
significant amount of economic and political issues due to their close proximity to other nations.
The influence of other cultures on French individuals have led to industrial and revolutionary
advances. These advances not only influenced French culture, but also enabled France to become a
World Superpower. With that being said, these advances also sparked individuals, like Charles
Pierre Baudelaire, to write about France and all of its Earthly embodiments. Charles Pierre
Baudelaire was born in Paris, France on April 9, 1821 to François and Caroline Baudelaire. In 1827,
Baudelaire's father passed away and shortly after, his mother remarried Major Jacques Aupick, who
was an ambassador to Louis–Napoléon. These events sparked Baudelaire's work with poetry that led
him to develop a substantial amount of debt. In correlation with Les Fleurs du Mal (The Flowers of
Evil) by Charles Baudelaire (2008), it states, "Because Baudelaire has been spending his capital and

its financial deficits from various wars and inabilities to impose adequate taxes upon the correct
classes. This began with the construction of new railroads around 1842 (Khan Academy). After the
aforementioned revolution myriad economic changes ensued to develop the Paris to a status of
power and prosperity as the capital of France. With the efficacious economy came new
technological advances through Industrialization that modernized Paris. Under the rule of Napoleon
III a plan to modernize Paris was implemented by Baron Georges–Eugene Haussmann in 1853
(Alvarado). This included new architectural buildings to house the overcrowded population,
efficient sanitary systems, wider streets, boulevards, public lighting, and a new road system. All of
these changes accounted for the monumental population that was migrating to Paris for its art scene
and frivolous nightlife. These improvements also drew more tourists and immigrants who brought
new art cultures which influenced the evolution of art in Paris. With industrialization came the
increasing popularity and creation of art galleries, museums, and critics (Adams). This is when
Baudelaire pursued his career in artistic critiques of new styles and rising artists. "Charles
Baudelaire urged artists to find poetry in contemporary

Morality In The Picture Of Dorian Gray
Hamza A. Dorsey
Schwartz
Ap Lit Rough Draft #2(slight corrections)

The And, The, And The Element Of A Person 's Psychological...
The term "fetish" and the element around it can be taken as far back and before the 18th century, the
Portuguese, predominantly West African natives, referred to certain objects that were used in
religious cults and their workings during worship. These religious objects and artefacts described
were mainly used in voodoo and witch craft and were believed to be incredibly supernatural items.
From this, the concept evolved from an item or object that is seen to have magical and enchanting
powers in a more primitive situation to something closer to what we know now.
Attention turned away from the people's relationship with a higher being to relationship with
material objects which in comparison would not seem to hold such power as the ... Show more

Austrian neurologist and psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud was one of the first people to address the
subject of sexual fetishism and wrote an essay on the matter. After his investigation he'd come to
believe that the purpose and meaning behind an individual's "fetish" would always be one and the
same;
"The fetish is a substitute for the penis...for a particular and quite special penis that had been
extremely important in early childhood but had later been lost......It remains a token of triumph over
the threat of castration and a protection against it."
– Sigmund Freud, FETISHISM (1927)
According to Freud, a person's fetish, whether it may be a material object, act or some sort of
obsessive compulsive conduct, then that person is substituting the connection to the penis that they
had emotionally lost at childhood and finding support in that object or action. The word FETISH in
fact originated from Portugal, the word feitiço which means "spell". This suggests a representation
of power or power over something, in this case power over an individual and one's extreme
attachment to an object, body part or specific situation.
Carrying on from Freud's conclusions, which were made after studying and analysing a number of
men, he decided that the determination

discussion infinie.
compromet notre propre bonheur?'
tuer?' L'ouvrage en quelque mots Quand le pasteur a visité une vieille

Comparing Sonnet 55 And Charles Baudelaire's Le Portrait
This essay aims to compare and contrast two poems, William Shakespeare's Sonnet 55 and Charles
Baudelaire's Le Portrait, the last sonnet from a 4 part sonnet sequence, Un Fantôme. There are many
translated versions of Le Portrait; this essay will focus on the 1997 English translation by Walter
Martin from his book Complete Poems. Firstly a brief background of both poems will be reviewed,
followed by a comparison of their structure. An interpretation of the figurative meaning of each will
be explored, and then continued with an analysis of similarities and differences of the poetic
technique used. Finally the essay will conclude by comparing the general themes of both poems.
Sonnet 55 was composed by the English Poet William Shakespeare, assumed composition date
1603–04 (Duncan–Jones, 1997, p10) and published in 1609. Early 17th century England was in the

Martin does lose the eloquence of Baudelaire's rhyming structure, "Baudelaire always rhymes when
he writes in verse" (Howard, 1982, pxx), however this sacrifice is compensated by the strong use of
poetic technique previously described to retain the overall essence of the original. Both poems
express the memories of love to the speakers beloved, although the speaker in Sonnet 55 is
addressing the subject directly as 'you', in The Portrait the memory is more self reflective addressing
the subject as 'her'. Baudelaire is clearly bitter to feel the loss of his passion, recognising failure and
struggling to relate to Duval, as suggested by Lloyd "incapable of sharing any of his intellectual or
artistic interests" (Lloyd, 2008, p154). Both poems also express their feelings over the long passage
of time, showing contempt to time regarding its decaying effect, however they both immortalise
their beloved's memories through poetry until the end of time at Judgement

The Famous Poems Of Charles Baudelaire's Les Fleurs Du Mal
One of the most famous poems of Charles Baudelaire "Les Fleurs du mal", he introduces the term
Flaneur. Meaning stroller or anbler, this word has no literal explanation in the English language.
Flâneur is a person who generally moves around on the streets. Baudelaire, in one of his earliest
poems, "The Sun" which depicted the spontaneous quality of frolic through the city: "Along the old
outskirts of town, where Venetian blinds in hovel hide secret lecheries, when the cruel sun strikes
with redoubled ray town and country, rooftop and wheatfield, I go to practice by myself my
whimsical swordsmanship, sniffing at any corner for chance rhymes, tripping over words like curbs,
bumping sometimes into lines long sought in dreams." Flâneur strays around the city to understand
the secretive bliss in its earliest embodiment. The poetic creativity here is considered as the origin of
capital. The stroller or the artist can happily forget about the worries when on the streets and here he
even finds the rhythm and expression to nourish his poetry. In later demonstrations, Flaneur is filled
with separation, sorrow and spleen as it has been described. Paris was considered to be the most
typical lieu d'exil, which was the emblem of the barren status of modernity. Flaneur goes through an
intense namelessness which lines the personality of the flâneur. The skill of the Flaneur lies in his
craft of converting the "spleen", discontent and agony into bliss.

A Critical Commentary Of Le Cygne
A critical commentary of Le Cygne. "Le Cygne" is a poem by Baudelaire, published in the
"Tableaux parisiens" of "Fleurs du Mal. Between 1853 and 1870 the city of Paris underwent vast
amounts of renovation by order of Napoléon III. It included the destruction of many poor and
unhealthy old neighborhoods to be replaced by avenues, parks, squares and large boulevards. Many
of the writers at the time where unhappy with these changes and "Le Cygne" can be read as
Baudelaire's reaction to these changes which make him feel alone and lost in this new city. In my
commentary, I will suggest that Baudelaire attempts to create a virtual encyclopedia of exiled
individuals, and thus have felt similar emotions to that of Baudelaire's response to the changing city.
The poem is also dedicated to Victor Hugo, who at the time of the poem was in exile on a channel
island. I will first try and explore the meaning behind the different stories in the open. I will then try
to understand how each of these stories share a certain type of parallel or similarity in the terms of
the emotions felt, and finally what the main themes of the poem are altogether. Baudelare starts the
poem with a shout of 'Andromaque, je pense à vous!' (l.1). Andromache was the widow of ancient
Troy's great warrior, Hector. When Andromache's husband Hector was slain, the Greek warriors
went on to defeat the Trojans and burn Troy. Andromache heavily mourned the loss of her city and
her husband. 'Andromache serves as the

The Private Memoirs And Confessions Of A Justified Sinner The history of gothic literature is a discussion of how the classic gothic literature has morphed into today's contemporary gothic literature. From the beginning days of gothic writing one of the main focuses has been on the issues that were relevant in the county or world at the time. Most people think of gothic writings as a scary story of gloom and doom, but there are many aspects that encompass a gothic writing. The true is that there are many elements to a gothic writing. The writer does not need to use all of them at the same time, but to use some of them to make it a gothic writing. As technology and the social atmosphere have evaluated writers have incorporated these elements into their writing. Gothic literature is said to have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Ringel) Mary Snodgrass points out, "Decades before Sigmund Freud provided a paradigm for the human psyche, echoes of disturbing behaviors forced readers of gothic literature to interpret subtexts of prejudice, classism, and abnormality in thought and action: in the motivation for James Hogg's The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner." (Snodgrass) Many people of authority in America believed that the gothic genre was source of outside evil on the new world. This is supported by Reverend Enos Hitchcock's Memoirs of the Bloomsgrove Family, in which he "blames the corruption of young women in the new nation on "foreign writings and foreign manners" and prays "May this rising empire cease to import both the one and the other!" (Ringel) The 1800's rang in a new era of writers and twist on the gothic style. • 5. Cubism and Multiplicity of Narration in the Waste Land Cubism and Multiplicity of Narration in The Waste Land Abstract The aim of this essay is to consider the multiplicity of narration in The Waste Land and its relationship in enrichment of content and meaning in the poem. There is an attempt to convey the Cubist traits and find concrete examples in the poem. This study will try to specify evidences for conformity of cubism and multiplicity of narration in the poem. While Eliot juxtaposed so many perspectives in seemingly set of disjointed images, there is "painful task of unifying .., jarring and incompatible perspectives" in The Waste Land. Like a cubist painting, there is a kind of variety of narration in unity through the poem. The usage of different languages and narrations in the poem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Part of this sense of the totality of the modern self adding up to a fractured variety emerges, not just from the shifting sense of the images and the multiplicity of narration , but also from the variety in the verse style. It's as if in the modern age, there cannot be a single authoritative way of expressing how one feels. There is not enough confidence in the forms of language itself. Just as the traditional community has become the unreal city, a vision of a modern inferno. So The Waste Land is abundant with multiplicity of narration in different language and set of seemingly disordered images. The images in The Waste Land are supported by two distinct ways of narration. The lyric voice opening the poem uses metaphoric, often symbolic images and speaks in repetitive, stylized syntax. It has suggested on the one hand order and propriety, and on the other hand stasis. This voice speaks with authority and finality as it recurs in scenes throughout the poem where the vision of barrenness and revulsion from life is intensely clear and controlled. This voice contrasts with many voices speaking in metonymically rendered narrative scenes full of movement and change. These other voices resist categorization. These voices rang from vivid characters such as Marie, the hyacinth girl, Stetson's friend, Madame Sosostris, the nervous woman, the pub woman, Tiresias, and the Thames daughters, ... • 7. Charles Baudelaire Charles Baudelaire's poem 'L'Ennemi' from his famous collection Les Fleurs du Mal is a poem which criticises times, specifically the progression of time, using the extended metaphor of seasons passing along with a lexical field of natural imagery. Whilst fruits and flowers are discussed throughout this poem, Baudelaire's true subject matter is his own poems and his struggle to write them as he has become weary over time and has used up all his ideas and is unable to create any others. Time is held responsible for this. However, many critics have argued that the enemy of the poem is not in fact time, but something else. The poem remains ambiguous in this sense, but what is certain is that Baudelaire is trying to demonstrate that good can come ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This continues on from the progression of seasons, indicating time passing, seen in the first quatrain. Opening the quatrain with 'voilà que' demonstrates that what Baudelaire is about to describe is a consequence of what he described in the first quatrain, namely the metaphorical storms of childhood which still effect him today. Autumn, symbolic of death, suggests the death of Baudelaire's imagination in the sense that he can no longer think of any poems to write. The 'automne des idées' suggests that, whilst there was once a time for ideas (possibly during the 'brillants soleils' of childhood), this time has passed; something which is reflective of Baudelaire's pessimistic views of the 'progress' being made in the world. In the second line, Baudelaire uses the metaphor of physical labour to elucidate the idea of the mind working hard to be more creative. The idea of digging could represent planting seeds (either for fruit or plants) which will then bloom into ideas for poems; continuing this extended metaphor. The use of everyday items and the suggestion of the physical (rather than the mental which is actually being discussed) leads to a visual illustration of the disaster being described. Furthermore, the use of the indicative in this line suggests that what Baudelaire is saying is applicable to, not only himself, but also his readers; it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Rodin's Influence On The Gates Du Mal The foremost, and the most impressive influence on the Gates of Hell is by its namesake, the 16th century epic Inferno. The first of a three piece long epic by Dante Alighieri, it described Dante's descent into hell. After choosing his inspiration for his sculpture, Rodin closely studied Dante's masterpiece, though likely in a French translation, speaking of carrying it about with him. While Rodin was looser than some of his predecessors in the story telling of the gates ("The Gates of Hell." Rodin Museum), notable figures from literature emerge. The most prevalent and prominent is the work of Charles Baudelaire, specifically Les Fleurs du Mal. Les Fleurs du Mal was Baudelaire's poetic masterpiece, consisting of over a hundred poems in any of its additions, all somewhat intertwined with one another. The importance behind Baudelaire's works, however, lies not in the poetic mastery, but in the bleak and rather gritty feelings the poems induced, focused around the "general human predicament"( Burton.). These dark poems, banned at one time after their publication, were a great inspiration to Rodin, seeking to create his own grim and slightly disturbed feel for his hell. The influence of Baudelaire is most clearly documented on Rodin's Je Suis Belle named from the first line of Baudelaire's poem La Beauté, "Je suis belle, ô mortels! comme un rêve de pierre," (Baudelaire). The first stanza is engraved in the base of the sculpture, further driving the connection. (Figure 1). The figures that make up this piece, known as The Falling Man and The Crouching Women/Lust are found within the gates, and thus make a very visible and physical connection for the poet's influence. Born in Paris on April 9, 1821, Baudelaire was a notable French poet who was known for his controversial poems. He also worked as an essayist, an art critic, and even as a pioneering translator of Edgar Allan Poe, whom he called his "twin soul". Charles Baudelaire published his first collection of verse poetry, "Les Fleurs du Mal" or "The Flowers of Evil" in 1857. The Earth figuratively being a cake is a symbol that states that the content of the earth is full of sweetness and joy. In addition, this line is also a metaphor, it describes the earth to be a cake which in a literal sense is not true but is used to make a comparison between two unlike things such as the earth and a cake to provide symbolism. The deeper meaning of the line reveals that there are many positives to take from the world as life is sweet like a cake and should be consumed. Baudelaire expresses that happiness is all around "and full of sweetness" which declares that there is happiness within all aspects of life. The voice then speaks to the subject and states that "I can give you an appetite of equal size" the voice is saying that it can bring joy and happiness to the subject so then there would be no end to the subject's pleasure. Furthermore the voice comforts the subject and wants the subject to be happy and realize that there is joy all around him. • 15. Revealing In Oscar Wilde's The Picture Of Dorian Gray One thing that happens to everyone in life, is confronting the reality of growing up, which comes with the aspect of maturity. As one matures, they are subject to many things that ultimately change their very being. Oscar Wilde portrays this within The Picture of Dorian Gray by having the protagonist, Dorian, encounter a plethora of moral and philosophical dilemmas, that are represented through the physical aspects of Victorian life. Revealing that becoming corrupt in some way is inevitable if one is to live in the world of man, that which corrupts one's self comes in many forms. In a society such as Victorian England, the views of the general public and of persons with higher social status often reform one's morals in the course of maturing. Those who are perceived to be divinely beautiful by the masses, who have terrible rumours about themselves, are often still treated as innocent because of their beauty. "Sin is a thing that writes itself across a man's face. It cannot be concealed. People talk sometimes of secret vices...If a wretched man has a vice, it shows itself in the lines of his mouth, the droop of his eyelids the moulding of his hands even...But you, Dorian, with your pure , bright, innocent face...I can't believe anything against you"(Wilde 127). Madison Goldstein European Literature Gavin Drummond 17 December 2015 Existentialism in The Stranger and "Le Cygne" Albert Camus, in his famous novel The Stranger, and Charles Baudelaire, in one of his famous poems from the collection Les Fleurs du Mal, "Le Cygne," both express a common theme of the absurdity of life stemming from the philosophical ideal of Existentialism. In their portrayals of a man devoid of most emotion, Andromache, and a swan, Baudelaire and Camus express this ideal of absurd actions and pointless existence. Existentialism has several main points that are expressed in both The Stranger and "Le Cygne" including the free will of humankind, the responsibility of humans to accept the consequences of their actions and the indifference of the world to the struggles of mankind. In this discussion of Eliot's poem I will examine the content through the optic of eco–poetics. Eco– poetics is a literary theory which favours the rhizomatic over the arborescent approach to critical analysis. The characteristics of the rhizome will provide the overarching structure for this essay. Firstly rhizomes can map in any direction from any starting point. This will guide the study of significant motifs in 'The Waste Land.' Secondly they grow and spread, via experimentation within a context. This will be reflected in the study of the voice and the language with which the poem opens. Thirdly rhizomes grow and spread regardless of breakage. This will allow for an ... Baudelaire expresses emerging emotional states, flawed fascinations, and new forms of beauty that he finds himself surrounded by. These themes are all centered around the common thread of modernity. He focuses only on things that are unique to the present. The beauty of modernity is the only beauty worthwhile to Baudelaire, despite the mainstream effort to silence modern movements with more traditionalist values. His life was filled with an immense amount of mental and physical suffering. Charles was an alcoholic and had lots of drug addictions. He seemed to dwell in his own problems and self–pity (p. 93). In the poem "The Dog and the Scent Bottle" there are examples of his self–regard. This poem explained how his life went up and down and all the problems he had to overcome. As soon as I read this essay I was easily persuaded into thinking the man in this poem was probably a loner, and a drunk. I came to the conclusion that he based his works on his personal strengths and weaknesses. An example of this would be in two of his works, "Allegory" and Metamorphoses of a Vampire" each describing a woman. In each, the women are both prostitutes but they go on from there to two different routes. One maintains her purity while the other is a temptress who sucks the life out of her helpless victims. The critic takes these two points and forms his assumption. Baudelaire had not given up hope on ultimate purity even under the skin of a prostitute. I find that to be a strong example of strength he may have. Both of these poems relate to Charles Baudelaire's life because they both explain how the ups and downs go. No matter what happens in life you should never give up hope and always have faith until the end regarding anything you do. He writes a lot of poems about what he had previously experienced in his life and always hints that it's not easy but never give up. The critic did an excellent job getting his views across. These alterations can be expounded in depth via the economic, technological, and sociological aspects of each. Through the persona and exploration of the well–known writer, artist, and critic, Charles Baudelaire, these innovations can be expatiated and exemplified. Examining Charles Baudelaire's background is essential to understanding the way ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The wave of Industrialization reached Paris around 1840 which was later than other countries due to its financial deficits from various wars and inabilities to impose adequate taxes upon the correct classes. This began with the construction of new railroads around 1842 (Khan Academy). After the aforementioned revolution myriad economic changes ensued to develop the Paris to a status of power and prosperity as the capital of France. With the efficacious economy came new technological advances through Industrialization that modernized Paris. Under the rule of Napoleon III a plan to modernize Paris was implemented by Baron Georges–Eugene Haussmann in 1853 (Alvarado). This included new architectural buildings to house the overcrowded population, efficient sanitary systems, wider streets, boulevards, public lighting, and a new road system. All of these changes accounted for the monumental population that was migrating to Paris for its art scene and frivolous nightlife. These improvements also drew more tourists and immigrants who brought new art cultures which influenced the evolution of art in Paris. With industrialization came the increasing popularity and creation of art galleries, museums, and critics (Adams). This is when Baudelaire pursued his career in artistic critiques of new styles and rising artists. "Charles Baudelaire urged artists to find poetry in contemporary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Morality In The Picture Of Dorian Gray Hamza A. Dorsey Schwartz Ap Lit Rough Draft #2(slight corrections) One thing that happens to everyone in life, is confronting the reality of growing up, which comes with the aspect of maturity. Basil basically states that sin is for the ugly, for those who have sinned will forever wear it because of how it will always affect one's visage. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. The And, The, And The Element Of A Person 's Psychological... The term "fetish" and the element around it can be taken as far back and before the 18th century, the Portuguese, predominantly West African natives, referred to certain objects that were used in religious cults and their workings during worship. These religious objects and artefacts described were mainly used in voodoo and witch craft and were believed to be incredibly supernatural items. From this, the concept evolved from an item or object that is seen to have magical and enchanting powers in a more primitive situation to something closer to what we know now. Attention turned away from the people's relationship with a higher being to relationship with material objects which in comparison would not seem to hold such power as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Austrian neurologist and psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud was one of the first people to address the subject of sexual fetishism and wrote an essay on the matter. After his investigation he'd come to believe that the purpose and meaning behind an individual's "fetish" would always be one and the same; "The fetish is a substitute for the penis...for a particular and quite special penis that had been extremely important in early childhood but had later been lost......It remains a token of triumph over the threat of castration and a protection against it." – Sigmund Freud, FETISHISM (1927) According to Freud, a person's fetish, whether it may be a material object, act or some sort of obsessive compulsive conduct, then that person is substituting the connection to the penis that they had emotionally lost at childhood and finding support in that object or action. The word FETISH in fact originated from Portugal, the word feitiço which means "spell". This suggests a representation of power or power over something, in this case power over an individual and one's extreme attachment to an object, body part or specific situation. • 47. Comparing Sonnet 55 And Charles Baudelaire's Le Portrait This essay aims to compare and contrast two poems, William Shakespeare's Sonnet 55 and Charles Baudelaire's Le Portrait, the last sonnet from a 4 part sonnet sequence, Un Fantôme. There are many translated versions of Le Portrait; this essay will focus on the 1997 English translation by Walter Martin from his book Complete Poems. Firstly a brief background of both poems will be reviewed, followed by a comparison of their structure. An interpretation of the figurative meaning of each will be explored, and then continued with an analysis of similarities and differences of the poetic technique used. Finally the essay will conclude by comparing the general themes of both poems. Sonnet 55 was composed by the English Poet William Shakespeare, assumed composition date 1603–04 (Duncan–Jones, 1997, p10) and published in 1609. Early 17th century England was in the Renaissance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Martin does lose the eloquence of Baudelaire's rhyming structure, "Baudelaire always rhymes when he writes in verse" (Howard, 1982, pxx), however this sacrifice is compensated by the strong use of poetic technique previously described to retain the overall essence of the original. Both poems express the memories of love to the speakers beloved, although the speaker in Sonnet 55 is addressing the subject directly as 'you', in The Portrait the memory is more self reflective addressing the subject as 'her'. Baudelaire is clearly bitter to feel the loss of his passion, recognising failure and struggling to relate to Duval, as suggested by Lloyd "incapable of sharing any of his intellectual or artistic interests" (Lloyd, 2008, p154). Both poems also express their feelings over the long passage of time, showing contempt to time regarding its decaying effect, however they both immortalise their beloved's memories through poetry until the end of time at Judgement ... • 49. The Famous Poems Of Charles Baudelaire's Les Fleurs Du Mal One of the most famous poems of Charles Baudelaire "Les Fleurs du mal", he introduces the term Flaneur. Meaning stroller or anbler, this word has no literal explanation in the English language. Flâneur is a person who generally moves around on the streets. Baudelaire, in one of his earliest poems, "The Sun" which depicted the spontaneous quality of frolic through the city: "Along the old outskirts of town, where Venetian blinds in hovel hide secret lecheries, when the cruel sun strikes with redoubled ray town and country, rooftop and wheatfield, I go to practice by myself my whimsical swordsmanship, sniffing at any corner for chance rhymes, tripping over words like curbs, bumping sometimes into lines long sought in dreams." Flâneur strays around the city to understand the secretive bliss in its earliest embodiment. The poetic creativity here is considered as the origin of capital. The stroller or the artist can happily forget about the worries when on the streets and here he even finds the rhythm and expression to nourish his poetry. In later demonstrations, Flaneur is filled with separation, sorrow and spleen as it has been described. Paris was considered to be the most typical lieu d'exil, which was the emblem of the barren status of modernity. Flaneur goes through an intense namelessness which lines the personality of the flâneur. The skill of the Flaneur lies in his craft of converting the "spleen", discontent and agony into bliss. ... • 53. A Critical Commentary Of Le Cygne A critical commentary of Le Cygne. "Le Cygne" is a poem by Baudelaire, published in the "Tableaux parisiens" of "Fleurs du Mal. Between 1853 and 1870 the city of Paris underwent vast amounts of renovation by order of Napoléon III. It included the destruction of many poor and unhealthy old neighborhoods to be replaced by avenues, parks, squares and large boulevards. Many of the writers at the time where unhappy with these changes and "Le Cygne" can be read as Baudelaire's reaction to these changes which make him feel alone and lost in this new city. In my commentary, I will suggest that Baudelaire attempts to create a virtual encyclopedia of exiled individuals, and thus have felt similar emotions to that of Baudelaire's response to the changing city. The poem is also dedicated to Victor Hugo, who at the time of the poem was in exile on a channel island. I will first try and explore the meaning behind the different stories in the open. I will then try to understand how each of these stories share a certain type of parallel or similarity in the terms of the emotions felt, and finally what the main themes of the poem are altogether. Baudelare starts the poem with a shout of 'Andromaque, je pense à vous!' (l.1). Andromache was the widow of ancient Troy's great warrior, Hector. When Andromache's husband Hector was slain, the Greek warriors went on to defeat the Trojans and burn Troy. Andromache heavily mourned the loss of her city and her husband.
