Steroids In Professional Sports
The rush to Adrenaline: Steroids in professional sports
Infertility, tendon rupture, increased blood pressure, heart attack, tumors, cancer, aggression, and
severe acne; these are just some of the side effects of using anabolic steroids ("Anabolic steroid
abuse"). Why would an athlete risk all of these serious side effects just to hit a baseball a little
farther or to gain muscle mass to be superior against their opponents in football? Most people know
who big–name athletes like Jose Canseco, Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, and Lance
Armstrong are; and admire them. Barry Bonds hit 73 home runs in just one season. Lance
Armstrong won seven "Tour de France" titles in his career; both being doped up on steroids while
doing so. Could they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This lead to an investigation that ended up with positive TGH urine tests from four athletes
competing at the U.S National Championship. European 100m champion, Dwain Chambers, tested
positive for TGH. Victor Conte, the head of BALCO was sentenced to four months in prison and
then house arrest in 2005 for illegally providing athletes with an undetectable steroid. In 2007,
Marion Jones, who won three gold medals and two bronze medals at the Sydney Olympics in 2000,
admitted to THG use. In a short few months, Jones was sentenced to six months in prison after
originally lying about her steroid use in court. Jones was immediately stripped of all five medals by
the International Olympic Committee (Baker). Famous Boxer, "Sugar" Shane Mosely, used THG in
2003; Mosely claimed that he thought they were legal vitamin supplements. An athlete is liable for
the violations of taking steroids regardless of whether the athlete intentionally, unintentionally, or
negligently took the prohibited substance (Gillespie); which happened to MLB superstar Barry
Bonds whom tested positive for THG, and later claimed that his trainer gave the THG pills to him
and he had no knowledge of the pills being steroids ("Barry Bonds steroid abuse"). 14 time all–star,
Bonds, holds various MLB records that

Steroids : Steroids And Steroids
Steroids in Baseball Players like Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire and
Alex Rodriguez, just to name a few, have disobeyed the game of baseball, and for what? To add an
extra 2–5 mph on their fastball, or to hit the ball farther. If scouts liked you when you weren't on
steroids, why would you need to go on to them. It totally takes out your natural ability of what made
you the baseball player that scouts recruited you. This isn't only happening in the MLB; this is also
happening in the Minor Leagues. The entire sport of baseball has been infected by the virus of
performance enhancing drugs. The definition of steroids is a synthetic steroid hormone that
resembles testosterone in promoting the growth of muscle. Such hormones are used medicinally to
treat some forms of weight loss and (illegally) by some athletes and others to enhance physical
performance (Dictionary).
"The Steroid Era" refers to a period of time in Major League Baseball when a number of players
were believed to have used performance–enhancing drugs, resulting in increased offensive output
throughout the game. Unlike other MLB "eras," there is no defined start or end time to "the steroids
era," though it is generally considered to have run from the late '80s through the late 2000s. Though
steroids have been banned in MLB since 1991, the league did not implement league wide PED
testing until 2003. The lack of testing meant it was unlikely

All athletes want to win, but some want to win more than others. Some athletes will do anything to
get the competitive edge over their opponents. Then they turn to drugs to get the edge. Steroids are
the most common drug for athletes to take. It increases muscle mass, body weight etc. Athletes also
take androstenedione, creatine, anabolic steroids and ephedra alkaloids. 2.5–5% of adolescents are
using these drugs. There are a lot of banned drugs, just about 50–130 different drugs that cannot be
used in any kind of sport. The United States of America Doping Agency or (USADA) is requiring
more and more drugs tests on the players at the college level and professionals as well. Many of the
drugs cause acne, aggressiveness, baldness and many more ... Show more content on

I also don't understand why the big time athletes are doing drugs when the little pee wee or middle
school athletes are looking to them. If those little guys find out that their hero is on steroids, he or
she might start on them too. Only because they think it's okay because if their big time hero is doing
it then they can because they want to be him or her. Those heros have to lead by example they can't
just let the kids down. Because sooner or later the kid who is taking steroids will tell his friend,
"Hey take steroids, they make you bigger and our favorite player takes them too"! Then the other
kid will tell his friend the same thing so it will be like a chain reaction going around. Then they
don't quit and after a while they have to take a drug test and those kids fail. The kids ask, "How"?
The coach says, "Have you been taking steroids"? The kid says, "Yes how is that bad I've been
taking them because my favorite player takes them." Thats going to happen maybe it already
happened I don't know, but I think it's going to happen. I mean come on, it just isn't right. You have
the athletes that want to win and others want to win more than others. It's just unfair that some
athletes actually work in the right way and others stick a needle his or her arm and they get bigger.
It's an unfair size, speed, strength advantage. Those certain amount of athletes that take steroids or
any other enhancing drug, they are only cheating themselves. Those athletes that do that think they
can do anything they want to because they are millionaires. Well news flash, you can't do whatever

Steroid Use And Steroids Use
I can say something that less and less people can say these days; I love baseball. I like football and
basketball just as much, but I do love the game of baseball. It's America's pastime, what is there not
to love. But for some reason the MLB has been clouded with steroid use, more so than a lot of other
professional sports leagues. Once I found this section in the readings I wanted to investigate it and
dig a little deeper into how big of an issue it really is, and what the league has or has not done about
it. Fortunately, this trend has seemed to fade away and become less of a problem. However, I would
still like to dive into this subject and see the progression from when steroid use began to peak and
see how the league and everyone else ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This new stricter policy is what would bring the MLB out of the "steroid–era". When most people
think about PED use in baseball the obvious names come to mind: Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds,
Alex Rodriguez, Rafael Palmeiro, and Gary Sheffield. However, some names they are not aware of
are Bay Area Laboratory Co–Operative (BALCO), or the Biogenesis of America Clinic in Florida.
What's more, it is often unknown that a large majority of the players that have been suspended
received their performance–enhancing drugs from those laboratories. According to a CNN article on
the timeline of the BALCO scandal, in the early 2000's BALCO came under investigation by federal
agents in California, and by the U.S. Anti–Doping Agency who received an anonymous tip that an
undetectable, designer steroid was being distributed by the founder of BALCO ("BALCO Fast
Facts," 2016). MLB athletes named in this case included: Barry Bonds, Gary Sheffield, Jason and
Jeremy Giambi, Armando Rios, Benito Santiago, and Bobby Estalella. All of these players were
given the steroids by a man named Greg Anderson, who was their trainer. During this investigation,
many high profiled players were subpoenaed to testify in front of a grand jury. Barry Bonds and
Gary Sheffield both testified that they unknowingly took steroids that were given to them by Greg
Anderson. Conversely, the rest of the MLB players testifying admitted to taking steroids given to
them by Greg Anderson. Though players had been

s Pastime as well as endangering the health of those who use the illegal substances. The lack of
testing and punishment for the use of illegal substances like steroids in the Major Leagues portrays a
negative image to aspiring young athletes. They see their role models using steroids and becoming
better athletes rather than seeing suspensions for the illegal behavior or the negative health effects.

It is a shame that it took a death to reveal it.
The next major blow to baseball was leaked Grand Jury testimony by reigning MVP Barry Bonds
for the case against the Bay Area Laboratory Co–operative (BALCO). BALCO was under
investigation for distributing illegal performance enhancing substances such as steroids to major
athletes including Bonds. In the testimony Bonds described taking substances given to him by his
trainer Greg Anderson, who was indicted for distributing steroids. The substances described were
similar to two types of steroids commonly distributed by BALCO. Bonds claimed ignorance stating
that he thought the substances were natural supplements for arthritis (Associated Press, np).
The final blow to the league was the tell–all book Juiced written by former MLB star Jose Canseco.
In his best–selling book Canseco admitted to personally injecting then teammate and former single
season homerun record holder Mark McGwire with steroids. In an interview on 60 Minutes Mike
Wallace read out of Canseco?s book:
What we did more times than I can count was go into a bathroom stall together, shoot up steroids.
After batting practice or right before the game, Mark and I would duck into a stall in the men's
room, load up our syringes and inject ourselves. I would often inject Mark (60 Minutes).

Essay on The Use of Steroids in Major League Baseball
The Use of Steroids in Major League Baseball
He walked into his hotel bathroom and cautiously closed the door. Clanging his 60 lb. dumbbell
against the floor, he set his travel bag full of needles on the counter. While filling his syringe with
THG, he began to think about the consequences of his actions; it is a serious problem, but he doesn't
have the willpower to give up the success rewarded from it. As the needle slowly penetrated through
the skin and half way through his muscle, he unloaded the syringe and felt the steroids settle
throughout his leg. He took a deep breath as he removed the needle, letting the last bit of steroids
squirt out of the syringe. Mentally blocking the pain, he began curling his dumbbell to pump the ...

When the steroid scandal heightened and the talk of drug testing began, it is apparent that Giambi
got scared and stopped his steroid problem. When Giambi reported to spring training this year, he
came in with a sunken in face and weighed 20 pounds less, which is an occurrence that happens
when an athlete discontinues his steroid cycle.
Steroids are becoming a huge problem in Major League Baseball. Records in the past, such as the
single season home run record, were set by people who were truly amazing athletes and achieved
their record from hard work and dedication. From 1966 through 1994, two players hit at least 50 or
more home runs. Since 1995, 18 players have reached 50. Roger Maris' single–season record of 61
home runs stood for 27 years and has been surpassed six times since 1998. Morals in baseball have
been lost; whatever happened to achieving greatness with the talents God had given them? Now
players are chemically making themselves stronger so that they can make record books, and they are
ruining their bodies as well as the competition to do it. Players now have to start "juicin' up" just to
contend with the competition. The NBA, NFL, NCAA, and Olympics all ban steroids, and it is
coming to the day where baseball needs too as well (Caminiti).
Well, what are steroids? Where did they come from? And how do they make someone so much

Drugs And Performance Enhancing Drugs
In today's sports world, performance enhancing drugs have become more and more of a problem.
Famous athletes with prestigious accomplishments do not always play by the rules. Celebrities with
countless amounts of fans and admirers turn out to be nothing but a cheater. These athletes earn
millions of dollars to simply perform, entertain, and follow the rules of their respected sport.
Unfortunately, performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) have changed the way people look at athletes
and their legacies. The practice of unethical crimes in sports dates back much farther than recent
dates. According to Georgios A. Antonopoulos (2013, Pg.1), the first documented case of match–
fixing or PEDs, occurred in 338 BC when Eupolos of Thessaly persuaded three of his boxers to
cheat in attempt to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games. Antonopoulos (2013, Pg.1) also states
that athletes from the Ancient Greece consumed assorted amounts of wine, brandy, hallucinogenic
mushrooms, and sesame seeds to increase their performance levels. Even gladiators that competed
in Rome's Colosseum and knights of the medieval era used various undefined stimulants in order to
enhance stamina and overcome injuries. Clearly the professional athletes of today's society did not
start this trend. The greats that shaped this world two–thousand years ago have transformed their
body's potential through the use of drugs before officials even classified drugs as a threat. Granted,
times have changed and the use for these

Steroids : A Lifestyle Of Cheating
Ravaging 'Roids: A lifestyle of Cheating Gym Candy, 'roids, juice, pumpers, weight trainers, clear,
beans and hype (Steroids and their). All of these words are slang for the illegal substance known
more commonly as anabolic steroids and HGH, or human growth hormone. The controversy
surrounding anabolic steroids and HGH in sports has stormed to the forefront of the many problems
that plague America today. Anabolic steroids are synthetic chemicals that mimic the effects of the
male sex hormone testosterone. Steroids promote increased muscle gain and muscle mass. Steroids
are also highly addictive and addiction to steroids can be worse than an addiction to other drugs in
terms of the effect of withdrawal and dependency. Steroids can take the form of tablets, capsules,
injectable liquids, and drops (Steroids– Better). According to Fox News, ¬¬¬5% of middle school
and high school aged–children have or currently use anabolic steroids. 30 to 40% of college and
professional athletes have used steroids, as well as 10–20% of high school athletes (Ricki Lewis).
Despite their illegality, law enforcement officials cannot devote more resources to policing steroid
use and trafficking because they are still fighting the abuse of other illegal drugs that affect many
more young people (McCloskey and Bailes). Steroids are more on the outskirts of the drug war law
enforcement is fighting right now. Many athletes looking to gain a competitive edge on all levels

Drugs And Sports : The Use Of Drugs In Sports
Drugs in sports, also known as doping, is very common around the world. The usage of drugs in
sport goes way back, about all the way back to where the concept of sports was invented, during the
1960's. Doping is a practice that has been going on since the time of "ancient Greek athletes, who
supposedly ate herbs, sesame seeds, dried figs, and mushrooms for this purpose" (Hoberman, 1992,
104).In ancient times, when the fittest of a nation were selected as athletes or combatants, they were
fed diets and given treatments considered beneficial. For instance, Scandinavian mythology says
Berserkers could drink a mixture called "butotens", to greatly increase their physical power at the
risk of insanity. One theory is that the mixture was prepared from the Amanita muscaria mushroom,
though this has been disputed. The German missionary and doctor Albert Schweitzer wrote of
Gabon in the early 19th century: "The people of the country can, having eaten certain leaves or
roots, toil vigorously all day without feeling hungry, thirsty or tired and all the time showing a
happiness and gaiety. In ancient Rome , where chariot racing had become a huge part of their
culture, athletes drank herbal infusions to strengthen them before chariot races.
Many athletes use drugs to make them stronger and faster to win the competition. One of the most
known news about it was when Michael Phelps used steroids in the 2008 Olympics. Even though all
the tests came negative, he still got caught and that is when doping was starting to be more of an
issue. Matthew Irby, a reporter for the Bleacher Report stated, "The drug that Phelps has allegedly
tested positive for is a rarely used and/or seen steroid, DDP. DDP stands for Delphinus Delphis
Ponticus." DDP builds endurance in an athlete by increasing the production of oxygen–rich red
blood cells. Similar to its sister drug EPO, DDP has been modified so that it targets specific areas of
endurance and recovery for swimmers. Given the advantage of taking the illegal steroid, a swimmer
could performer better during races and then recover quicker if another race was soon to come.
After this 2008 incident, Phelps was then tested sixteen times the 2016 olympics. Phelps was not at

Professional Athletes who Cheat in Sports Essay
Professional athletes are role models to the American children across the Nation. Professional
athletes must follow ethical standards to play fairly in their sport. This means that players must
compete without the assistance of performance enhancing drugs such as steroids (Tynes, 2006). Yet,
professional athletes choose to cheat by taking illegal substances, which results in the death of some
players and a wide variety of health problems. The Federal Government realized that the use of
anabolic steroids is a form of cheating and defrauds the players and fans of "real" competition. As a
result, for the concern of the athletes' health and concern for the ethical standards of the game
played, the Anabolic Steroid Act of 1990 (ASCA) was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Victor Conte, founder of BALCO, was under investigation when athletes began testing positive for
illegal steroid substances in 2000. Due to the test results and rumors of the athletes, the U.S Anti–
Doping agency began their operation during the same year. In 2002, the Federal investigation of the
BALCO Company began. A narcotics task force received tips that professional baseball players
were doping and receiving undetected illegal performance enhancement supplements from
BALCO's founder, Victor Conte. Later in 2003, a disgruntled sprint coach, Trevor Graham turned
over a sample of the drug tetrahydrogestrinone (THG) nicknamed "The Clear" to the World Anti–
Doping agency. The BALCO case begins to build. By the Fall of 2003, federal agents raid BALCO
offices where HGH (human growth hormones) were found. As a result of the raid athletes were
accused and fingers were pointed. Many athletes involving baseball players Barry Bonds, Jason
Giambi, and track and field athletes Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery testified before the
BALCO Grand jury. The USA track and field approved a policy called "zero tolerance" that if the
ban was legal they would include lifetime bans for first offenses on steroids, at the same time The
International association of athletics federation had legal questions arise when they tried to change

Studies of narcissism indicated that nothing appeals more to people than themselves, so why not

they could thus spark love affairs by the millions, and the sale of self–images soon was expediting

major problems the motivational analysts had to grapple with, for though self–indulgent and easy–

absolution. Cigarette advertising began to reflect the insights of MR: people were shown smoking
while under pressure or as a reward for tough jobs done. Similarly, candy was marketed as a way to
reward oneself, or, when sold in bite–sized pieces, as self–indulgence in moderation. Household

Thesis Statement For Auroville
Thesis – The Body A. Introduction Research Proposal condensed– Reason for the study. Why is it
important to try and belong to your built environment? Especially today, when we see that lots of
efforts are being taken to try and bridge this gap, especially in the cities in India. Where the
development has been haphazard, now it's too late to go backwards and carefully plan, so the
relevance in looking at a careful approach from the beginning holds a lot of interest for me. There
are different attempts being made in the cities to now bridge the gap but what does it mean to
continuously bridge the gap and not do it as an after thought? This is the attempt that I find most
prominent in Auroville, and also the most challenging in its development. ... Show more content on

She drew a basic diagram (diagram). As envisioned the town was to be divided into four major
zones; namely residential, cultural, international and Industrial zones with a meditation space at the
centre. In 1966, Roger Anger, a French Architect from Paris working with the Ashram, also Mother's
Grand son–in law, presented two plans. The first plan was based on a strict orthogonal grid, divided
the city into two major sectors, housing and industries facing each other, with the meditation space
on an artificial lake, which was surrounded by the international sector on three sides. The second
model represented the city in a form of a radial circular plan with the meditation garden at the centre
and sectors divided by concentric and radial streets and avenues. The former plan was rejected by
Mother and was developed on circular lines. She said 'it is the open city' [the 'Nebula']. It also
resembled the sketch she had given Roger. Whilst, retaining the dynamism of the previous plan, its
spiral form radiates from the spiritual centre of the town, with a progressive densification and
increase of height towards it. There were no mega–structures in the final master–plan; only a
succession of buildings of decreasing height towards the periphery, down to a minimum height. . (

The beginnings and ends of what we choose to call centuries are almost invariably years of little
significance. But there is little agreement over when the twentieth century c.e. arrived, and there
were several points both before the year 2000 (the collapse of the Soviet Union, the reunification of
Germany, the surge of globalization from the mid–1990s) and afterward (9/11, or the global
recession of 2008) when one could quite plausibly argue that a new era had begun. A compelling
case can be made for viewing the decades of the global scramble for colonies after 1870 as a
predictable culmination of the long nineteenth century, which was ushered in by the industrial and
political revolutions of the late 1700s. But at the same time, without serious attention to the
processes and misguided policies that led to decades of agrarian and industrial depression from the
late 1860s to the 1890s, as well as the social tensions and political rivalries that generated and were
in turn fed by imperialist expansionism, one cannot begin to comprehend the causes and
consequences of the Great War that began in 1914. That conflict determined the contours of the
twentieth century in myriad ways. On the one hand, the war set in motion transformative processes
that were clearly major departures from those that defined the nineteenth–century world order. On
the other, it perversely unleashed forces

Drugs, Cheating, and the Purity of America's Pastime...
Most children who have grown up in an American household have at one point in their lives looked
up to sports figures as heroes. Whether it was your grandfather telling his stories of watching Babe
Ruth become a legend, your father's stories of Mickey Mantle and the legendary Yankee teams of
the 1950's and 1960's, or your own memory of Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa chasing the home
run record, the feeling of wholesomeness that baseball provides has always found its way into many
people's hearts. Steroids have tarnished these sacred memories, cast doubts in the minds of many on
the legitimacy of records and statistics and finally affected the way younger players play the game.

This latest discovery of steroid use has the chance to step on the hearts of many young fans of the
game, and turn away the most loyal of fans. This whole situation has the opportunity to become a
crushing blow to a country at war in need of its national pastime; a country that needs its heroes.
The most rampant issue regarding steroids in baseball lately has to do with the investigation of
BALCO (Bay Area Laboratory Co–Operative), its dispensing of steroids, and the players that
willingly accepted them. Aside from the fact that these are illegal
drugs, and several BALCO employees face federal punishment for distributing them, just as
someone selling heroin or cocaine on the street would be, the investigation must be able to tell us
which players accepted and used the steroids which they were given. So far the only discovery that
has been made was that three superstar players Barry Bonds, Gary Sheffield, and Jason Giambi,
allegedly received the drugs from BALCO, but there has been no proof as to when, or even if they
were definitely used by them. (Wada Williams) The fact that three of the most prominent, popular,
and notable players in the game had been given steroids radically changes the public's perception of
them. Whether or not they used the steroids given to them is another story in itself, but the mere fact
that they

The Use of Performance Enhancing Drugs in Sports Today
Performance enhancers are very prominent in professional sports today. A lot of players are facing
suspensions and other penalties for using them. The sport that gets scrutinized the most for this is
Baseball. Many former users in the MLB (or formally the NABBP) have come out saying that they
were using these drugs while playing. Some of these players are Jorge Sosa, Antonio Bastardo, and
the famous Alex Rodriguez. Although these drugs have been prohibited, players are still finding
ways around the tests which is why in some other countries they are legal so that no one player can
have an unfair advantage. There have been many arguments and disputes about the origin of the
sport known as baseball. This has led many people to wonder where 'America's favorite pastime'
came from. Some people believe that the sport has taken shape from a primeval community game
called rounders. Other historical sources remark that Thomas Wilson condemned this game and a
few other sports. In England he was considered a conformist leader. These speculations have led to
curiosity to the game of stool ball. In this game, the batter would stand in front of a stool while a
different person pitched him the ball. If the batter's ball was caught in the field he would be out.
Also, if the ball hit the stool that was behind the batter, he would again be out.

Steriods in Sports Should Be Banned
Sheila Sim Mrs. Virginia Link–Pease English 122 02 October 2010 Steroid Use in Sports Should Be
Banned Day by day professional athletes are being praised for their ability and accomplishments in
their respective sports. The professional athletes that are succeeding the most are generally using
performance enhancing drugs, other known as anabolic steroids (Mayo Clinic). Anabolic steroids
are drugs which imitate the effect of the male sex hormone, Testosterone. The cells producing
protein increase and then turn into cellular tissue build up in the muscles. The professional athletes
that are taking advantage of the performance enhancing drugs, or steroids, should be prohibited
from their particular sports, if not terminated from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All these achievements were reached while under the use of steroids. Merriman's suspension was
never announcement because he reserved his right to appeal his suspension (Mortensen). There have
been many other NFL players who have been caught using anabolic steroids. Each of these players

The effects of Steroids Essay
One of the hottest topics on the news recently has been steroid use by athletes. From talk radio to
the best seller list to the Senate floor, the controversy has only grown during the 2006 baseball
season, as Barry Bonds continues his quest to move right on past Babe Ruth and break Hank
Aaron's home run record.
Although Bonds' case has certainly attracted the most publicity, the issue is definitely not confined
to baseball. The best–selling book "Game of Shadows" was written by two reporters who had spent
months investigating top athletes from a variety of sports, including Olympians like track star
Marion Jones. While it does focus extensively on Bonds, this meticulously researched bestseller
also describes in detail how many other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The synthesis of testosterone was first achieved in 1930s Nazi Germany, but the initial discovery
was greeted with indifference Over the next few decades, however, athletes and their coaches
(especially bodybuilders) began to realize and covet the performance enhancing qualities of these
drugs. (Wikipedia)
During the 1950s, and at the 1952 Olympic games in particular, Americans were blown away by the
power of their Russian and European competitors. It did not take American doctors long to realize
that the "unnatural" performance of these athletes was just that. These bodybuilders and wrestlers
had been given steroids in the form of synthetic testosterone.
U.S. doctors scrambled to come up with a drug that with do the same for American athletes, and by
the late 1950s they had succeeded in bringing such a drug to the market, known as Dianabol. It was
the first of many. (Wikipedia)
Whatever their intentions, these early pioneers in the field of steroid development did not realize the
Pandora's box they had opened, and they certainly did not realize that the demons thus released
would continue to plague sports into the next century.
Anabolic steroids definitely did what they were supposed to insofar as promoting muscle growth,
resulting in a more powerful and bigger athlete. At first it seemed ideal, and use of these drugs was
soon widespread.

Essay on Use of Steroids in Baseball
Use of Steroids in Baseball
Since Major League Baseball all–star Ken Caminiti openly admitted to Sports Illustrated to have
used steroids during his career, steroid use as a muscle and performance enhancer has been
uncovered and become a big issue Major League Baseball is wrestling with. The "ongoing and
delicate subject, baseball's dirty, little secret that is no secret anymore," is a huge and growing
problem (Curry B20). Now that light has been shed on the issue, critics are beginning to realize the
magnitude of this problem and do not like it. Steroids are a cheating virus that is spreading quickly.
Users cheat other players, themselves, the fans, and the game itself. Action must be taken to rid

At least half the guys are using steroids" (Caminiti in "Totally Juiced"). Verducci commented,
"Steroid use, which a decade ago was considered a taboo violated by a few renegade sluggers, is
now so rampant in baseball that even pitchers and wispy outfielders are juicing up" (Verducci).
Though the real number probably lies under twenty percent, it is a significant enough number to
have a detrimental impact on the game.
The correct term for the steroids being used is anabolic androgenic steroids. Anabolic describes its
effect of increasing muscle mass. Androgenic describes its effect on the development of male sexual
characteristics. They are commonly referred to as anabolic steroids, "juice," "'roids," or simply
steroids. Despite all the negative accusations of using anabolic steroids as a muscle enhancer, the
fact is they do work. They increase strength and muscle mass, improve fast twitch muscles, and
ultimately allow an athlete to transcend physical limitations and reach a higher level of
performance. Texas pitcher Kenny Rodgers said:
Basically, steroids can jump you a level or two. The average player can become a star, and the star
player can become a superstar, and the superstar? Forget it. He can do things we've never seen
before. You take a guy who already has great hand–eye coordination and make him stronger, and
without a doubt he'll be better. (Rodgers in "Totally Juiced")

commonly as anabolic steroids and HGH (human growth hormone). The controversy surrounding
anabolic steroids and HGH in sports has stormed to the forefront of the many problems that plague
America today. Anabolic steroids are synthetic chemicals that mimic the effects of the male sex
hormone testosterone. Some athletes seeking increased muscular strength and size abuse anabolic
steroids (Ricki Lewis). According to Fox News, ¬¬¬5% of middle school and high school aged–
children have or currently use anabolic steroids. 30 to 40% of college and professional athletes use
steroids, as well as 10–20% of high school athletes (Ricki Lewis). Despite their illegality, law
enforcement officials cannot devote more resources to policing steroid use and trafficking because
they are still fighting the abuse of other illegal drugs that affect many more young people
(McCloskey and Bailes). Many athletes looking to gain a competitive edge on all levels use anabolic
steroids because of their muscle growth and muscle building benefits, but overlook the extensive list
of sometimes life–threatening side effects that steroids may bring. I believe that athletes should not
believe they have the right to take steroids to gain an even slight competitive advantage because it
leads to a larger ethical problem

Steroid Use in Baseball: a Social Injustice?
Steroid Use in Baseball: A Social Injustice?
In the year of 1998 the sport of baseball ruled the landscape of the sports world as people all over
the country were watching Mark Mcgwire and Sammy Sosa race towards the single–season home
run record. Major League Baseball, the ruling body of professional baseball in the United States,
was all too thrilled with their newfound popularity and growing revenues. The game of baseball had
long been considered "the" American pastime, but entering the 98' season the league was still
searching for ways to reopen the enthusiasm, and wallets, of baseball fans that had lost interest in
the sport, largely due to the strike–shortened campaign in 1994. The home run race between
McGwire and Sosa that took ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The steroid scandal would ultimately culminate with a Congressional investigation into baseball
which produced the most comprehensive document on the subject known as "The Mitchell Report."
This document is a written report to Commissioner Bud Selig summarizing the widespread use of
steroids and performance enhancing drugs that had run rampant through baseball, with players from
every team being found to have had some experience with performance enhancing drugs. The 2007
federal report also accuses Major League Baseball of sacrificing the issue of drug testing during
collective bargaining junctions with the player's union in the interest of economics (Mitchell).
Steroid use in baseball must be considered a social injustice for several reasons. As previously
stated, until recently baseball was considered "the" American pastime. Major League Baseball
maintains an audience of tens of millions Americans, many children, making it a social issue.
Additionally, if justice is defined as the principle of social order that defines everything each person
is due, then the violation of a fair and equal workplace is clearly evident here. Other perspectives
through which one can examine this issue are the ethics of steroid use in competition, or possibly
the seemingly conscienceless lies told by the players and others, in court and out. Furthermore
aspects of this issue that one might

Steroids In Professional Sports

  • 1. Steroids In Professional Sports The rush to Adrenaline: Steroids in professional sports Infertility, tendon rupture, increased blood pressure, heart attack, tumors, cancer, aggression, and severe acne; these are just some of the side effects of using anabolic steroids ("Anabolic steroid abuse"). Why would an athlete risk all of these serious side effects just to hit a baseball a little farther or to gain muscle mass to be superior against their opponents in football? Most people know who big–name athletes like Jose Canseco, Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, and Lance Armstrong are; and admire them. Barry Bonds hit 73 home runs in just one season. Lance Armstrong won seven "Tour de France" titles in his career; both being doped up on steroids while doing so. Could they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This lead to an investigation that ended up with positive TGH urine tests from four athletes competing at the U.S National Championship. European 100m champion, Dwain Chambers, tested positive for TGH. Victor Conte, the head of BALCO was sentenced to four months in prison and then house arrest in 2005 for illegally providing athletes with an undetectable steroid. In 2007, Marion Jones, who won three gold medals and two bronze medals at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, admitted to THG use. In a short few months, Jones was sentenced to six months in prison after originally lying about her steroid use in court. Jones was immediately stripped of all five medals by the International Olympic Committee (Baker). Famous Boxer, "Sugar" Shane Mosely, used THG in 2003; Mosely claimed that he thought they were legal vitamin supplements. An athlete is liable for the violations of taking steroids regardless of whether the athlete intentionally, unintentionally, or negligently took the prohibited substance (Gillespie); which happened to MLB superstar Barry Bonds whom tested positive for THG, and later claimed that his trainer gave the THG pills to him and he had no knowledge of the pills being steroids ("Barry Bonds steroid abuse"). 14 time all–star, Bonds, holds various MLB records that ... • 2. Steroids : Steroids And Steroids Steroids in Baseball Players like Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire and Alex Rodriguez, just to name a few, have disobeyed the game of baseball, and for what? To add an extra 2–5 mph on their fastball, or to hit the ball farther. If scouts liked you when you weren't on steroids, why would you need to go on to them. It totally takes out your natural ability of what made you the baseball player that scouts recruited you. This isn't only happening in the MLB; this is also happening in the Minor Leagues. The entire sport of baseball has been infected by the virus of performance enhancing drugs. The definition of steroids is a synthetic steroid hormone that resembles testosterone in promoting the growth of muscle. Such hormones are used medicinally to treat some forms of weight loss and (illegally) by some athletes and others to enhance physical performance (Dictionary). "The Steroid Era" refers to a period of time in Major League Baseball when a number of players were believed to have used performance–enhancing drugs, resulting in increased offensive output throughout the game. Unlike other MLB "eras," there is no defined start or end time to "the steroids era," though it is generally considered to have run from the late '80s through the late 2000s. Though steroids have been banned in MLB since 1991, the league did not implement league wide PED testing until 2003. The lack of testing meant it was unlikely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are a lot of banned drugs, just about 50–130 different drugs that cannot be used in any kind of sport. It's America's pastime, what is there not to love. But for some reason the MLB has been clouded with steroid use, more so than a lot of other professional sports leagues. Once I found this section in the readings I wanted to investigate it and dig a little deeper into how big of an issue it really is, and what the league has or has not done about it. This new stricter policy is what would bring the MLB out of the "steroid–era". When most people think about PED use in baseball the obvious names come to mind: Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Rafael Palmeiro, and Gary Sheffield. However, some names they are not aware of are Bay Area Laboratory Co–Operative (BALCO), or the Biogenesis of America Clinic in Florida. What's more, it is often unknown that a large majority of the players that have been suspended received their performance–enhancing drugs from those laboratories. According to a CNN article on the timeline of the BALCO scandal, in the early 2000's BALCO came under investigation by federal agents in California, and by the U.S. Anti–Doping Agency who received an anonymous tip that an undetectable, designer steroid was being distributed by the founder of BALCO ("BALCO Fast Facts," 2016). MLB athletes named in this case included: Barry Bonds, Gary Sheffield, Jason and Jeremy Giambi, Armando Rios, Benito Santiago, and Bobby Estalella. All of these players were given the steroids by a man named Greg Anderson, who was their trainer. During this investigation, many high profiled players were subpoenaed to testify in front of a grand jury. Steroids are becoming a huge problem in Major League Baseball. Records in the past, such as the single season home run record, were set by people who were truly amazing athletes and achieved their record from hard work and dedication. Famous athletes with prestigious accomplishments do not always play by the rules. Celebrities with countless amounts of fans and admirers turn out to be nothing but a cheater. These athletes earn millions of dollars to simply perform, entertain, and follow the rules of their respected sport. Unfortunately, performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) have changed the way people look at athletes and their legacies. The practice of unethical crimes in sports dates back much farther than recent dates. According to Georgios A. Antonopoulos (2013, Pg.1), the first documented case of match– fixing or PEDs, occurred in 338 BC when Eupolos of Thessaly persuaded three of his boxers to cheat in attempt to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games. Antonopoulos (2013, Pg.1) also states that athletes from the Ancient Greece consumed assorted amounts of wine, brandy, hallucinogenic mushrooms, and sesame seeds to increase their performance levels. Even gladiators that competed in Rome's Colosseum and knights of the medieval era used various undefined stimulants in order to enhance stamina and overcome injuries. • 10. Drugs And Sports : The Use Of Drugs In Sports Drugs in sports, also known as doping, is very common around the world. The usage of drugs in sport goes way back, about all the way back to where the concept of sports was invented, during the 1960's. Doping is a practice that has been going on since the time of "ancient Greek athletes, who supposedly ate herbs, sesame seeds, dried figs, and mushrooms for this purpose" (Hoberman, 1992, 104).In ancient times, when the fittest of a nation were selected as athletes or combatants, they were fed diets and given treatments considered beneficial. For instance, Scandinavian mythology says Berserkers could drink a mixture called "butotens", to greatly increase their physical power at the risk of insanity. One theory is that the mixture was prepared from the Amanita muscaria mushroom, though this has been disputed. The German missionary and doctor Albert Schweitzer wrote of Gabon in the early 19th century: "The people of the country can, having eaten certain leaves or roots, toil vigorously all day without feeling hungry, thirsty or tired and all the time showing a happiness and gaiety. In ancient Rome , where chariot racing had become a huge part of their culture, athletes drank herbal infusions to strengthen them before chariot races. Many athletes use drugs to make them stronger and faster to win the competition. One of the most known news about it was when Michael Phelps used steroids in the 2008 Olympics. Even though all the tests came negative, he still got caught and that is when doping was starting to be more of an issue. Matthew Irby, a reporter for the Bleacher Report stated, "The drug that Phelps has allegedly tested positive for is a rarely used and/or seen steroid, DDP. DDP stands for Delphinus Delphis Ponticus." DDP builds endurance in an athlete by increasing the production of oxygen–rich red blood cells. Similar to its sister drug EPO, DDP has been modified so that it targets specific areas of endurance and recovery for swimmers. Given the advantage of taking the illegal steroid, a swimmer could performer better during races and then recover quicker if another race was soon to come. The first plan was based on a strict orthogonal grid, divided the city into two major sectors, housing and industries facing each other, with the meditation space on an artificial lake, which was surrounded by the international sector on three sides. The second model represented the city in a form of a radial circular plan with the meditation garden at the centre and sectors divided by concentric and radial streets and avenues. But there is little agreement over when the twentieth century c.e. arrived, and there were several points both before the year 2000 (the collapse of the Soviet Union, the reunification of Germany, the surge of globalization from the mid–1990s) and afterward (9/11, or the global recession of 2008) when one could quite plausibly argue that a new era had begun. A compelling case can be made for viewing the decades of the global scramble for colonies after 1870 as a predictable culmination of the long nineteenth century, which was ushered in by the industrial and political revolutions of the late 1700s. But at the same time, without serious attention to the processes and misguided policies that led to decades of agrarian and industrial depression from the late 1860s to the 1890s, as well as the social tensions and political rivalries that generated and were in turn fed by imperialist expansionism, one cannot begin to comprehend the causes and consequences of the Great War that began in 1914.
