Maria- Scott We are professional school counselors who focus on academic success, college & career readiness and social/emotional development of al students
Previously, the iPads have been used primarily by our teachers in the classroom. However, Student Services has started to adapt the new technology into our curriculum; a curriculum that is designed to meet the needs of all our students
(2)By the end of our time here together, we truly believe that you will agree, we are 100% ready to have a 1 to 1 ratio between our students and iPads.
(2)The Student Services department continues to strengthen its relationship with teachers and students through collaborative efforts involving the iPad.
(2)Utilizing the iPads and working with the teachers helps the counselors to understand the different types of applications that are being used, this in turn allows us to better serve our students and help them meet their goals.
(3)Our department has the unique and distinct opportunity to meet with all of the students in the school, multiples times a year, and provide them with a developmentally appropriate curriculum as they advance each year.
(3)As you will soon hear we are making great strides in utilizing technology to enhance our curriculum and delivery of services to all students in all academic areas. We are also dramatically increasing our access to student data, which helps us make informed data driven decisions.
Scott
We are very proud of the fact that our department has been considered trailblazers in meeting many of the district’s initiatives.
(Ramp Career Pathway -4 year course plans 23 support groups and growing Highest graduations rate in the district innovative uses of tech)
- however, we can only be as strong as our weakest link.
- A vast majority of students do in deed have an iPads, which we thank you for. However, we do meet some roadblocks.
With 15% of our students lacking iPads, we struggle to reach 100% of our students in all areas. When some students don’t have the same level of access to resources as others, they fall behind and we create a gap in learning.
Our department focuses on these three main areas, and it is important that we remove any roadblocks, so that all of our students can benefit from all the advantages that come from utilizing the iPads.
Our comprehensive program connects with the district goals, and we express this through the Pathways PLUS model which will outlined throughout the presentation.
Hello, I’m Deb Ohler, counselor at EG. This curriculum is based on academic, career, and personal/social standards and is developmentally appropriate for each grade level. The delivery of this curriculum directly supports the school improvement plan as the school counselor plays an integral role in advancing students to the next grade level. Our curriculum can be cross-walked with teacher standards to reinforce material and to provide interdisciplinary instruction. Students receive these services via classroom guidance lessons and group activities so that all students are exposed to the school counseling curriculum, not just those who self-advocate or whose parents advocate.
One way we achieve our goals is through the use of Naviance. This technology is critical to facilitate students career research and development. Via Naviance, students identify their career interests, career clusters, and pathways. Students have constant access to this information through 1:1 iPad access and Naviance. Each student has access to his/her individual portfolio on Naviance which houses their career pathways, 4-year course plans, and post-secondary goals. Students, counselors, parents and teachers collaboratively engage in developing and updating each students 4-year plan.
Intro me
In my role as the college/career counselor I work with all students and I know that equal technology access will help all kids PROGRESS.
EG continues to show progress, but if all kids had iPads it would create equal access
EQUAL ACCESS- to a technology tool will help facilitate student improvement from success in the classroom to
The premise here is that we are meeting everyone at where they are at. We provide differentiated reading materials through differnt apps.
In terms of writing, there is room for scaffolding. Explicitly support the Student Services department writing college applications.
Hi, I’m Alex Sanchez, counselor here at EG. As we begin to wrap-up the Pathways Plus Model, we arrive at the Social Wellness component where we offer all students direction in regards to responsibility, emotional health, and career guidance.
The 3 primary tenets of Social Wellness, as part of our Pathways PLUS model are: promoting a sense Citizenship, the establishment of positive Connections, and the building of a healthy Community.
A specific and important area in which a school wide 1 : 1 opportunity would foster social wellness is via our Social Wellness Groups. iPads would allow for immediate feedback from group participants having the ability to take pre/post surveys, as well as, academic skill readiness surveys and even emotional state assessments right then and there, which would would better guide our instruction.
As a proactive department functioning as part of a data driven school, we would be better able to assess and address immediate student needs. Furthermore, a 1 : 1 opportunity would personalize our response to the needs of individuals, and/or a targeted groups of students.
An example of proactive services targeted towards a specific group is some of the work that has been done with English Language Learners and Long-Term Learners with the aid of iPads. Myself and our other ELL counselor, Ruby Aleman have begun to “push services into” the classrooms of our traditional ELLs, as well as, our often struggling Long-Term Learners. With iPads at the center, we have designed a variety of lessons that aim to increase Social Wellness among these at-risk learners…
(ex: anonymous virtual discussions helping to remove the challenge of sharing difficult info aloud) (in connecting hard/soft skills/communication, students researched clubs and activities, and emailed sponsors to find out about meeting days/times/topics/etc.) (we explore safe and positive digital presence in an ever increasing digital world)
And finally, an overarching, legitimate concern that can be gauged from this graphic, deals with some of the contributing factors to the achievement gap. Given our demographical statistics, a 1 : 1 opportunity would avoid the potential to perpetuate the achievement gap with the creation of a “technology gap”.
Scott: You’ve heard from members of our team talk about how 1:1 will support the entire Pathways Plus model, which supports success for every student.
Here are a few visuals that illustrate the model
The sequence of our curriculum is developmental and reaches all students, each year.
Our program allows us to collaborate with teachers in each department.
Collaborate in each department
So as you can see we’re a little upside down without out all of our students having a 1:1.
With all the wonderful advances we are making in reaching our students, it would be a shame to leave a few behind.
Ultimately, we are asking you to help us remove one huge road block, and provide all of our students with equal access to success.
With 85% of our students utilizing iPads, we truly believe our school is ready to move to a 1:1 ratio. You will now hear from our colleagues how they too will benefit from having a 1:1 ratio.
