2. Through previously researching in-depth into music videos. I have developed my
understanding of why music videos portray the artist(s) in a specific way and why there
is an emphasis on media language such as camera, mise-en-scene and editing, in
relation to Carol Vernallis’ theory.
I have identified the most common shot types used in a music video are:
- Extreme close up/ Close up
- Medium shots
- Wide shots
- Long shots
The practical lip syncing activity was aimed for my group & I, to successfully show our
understanding of what shot types we would expect to see in a music video, as well as
being able to edit the base tracks in a structured ordered.
However, as a group we struggled to fulfill the task to our full potential due to the
limited use of time and my other team members finding it difficult to produce a good
performance.
As I closely studied Carol Vernallis’ theory, which is specifically based around media
language and how the 3 elements of mise-en-scene, camera and editing are used in
great detail in a music video…
3. I specifically tried to reflect her theory when editing the video, as I attempted to
produce edits in time with the tempo of the song and included all of the base tracks
we captured (which was very minimal, as we only managed to film in one location due
to limited amount of time.)
I personally feel we successfully captured a range of close ups in particular, which all
establish who the main performers were. My aim was to capture a vast range of close
ups of the artists to reflect the promotion of the artists’ image as well as helping the
audience to understand who is apart of the video, which would be commonly seen in
an actual music video.
The use of base tracks is defined to be a ‘master shot’ which clearly captures the artist
in a variety of locations, helping the audience to establish who they are. Majority of
music videos contain base tracks to satisfy the visual pleasure of the audience and
create a sense of who the artist is.
The process of editing the video, consisted of using final cut pro and placing markers
on the timeline in order to correctly sync the video and the song in time. The use of
markers, helped me drastically as wherever I wanted to place the base tracks in a certain
place, I would flag a marker which would allow me to edit in time of the beat and
place the lip syncing clip in the right place of the song.
4. In a conclusion, for our first group project I personally feel we produced a successful
outcome especially with only capturing a minimal amount of footage. I would say one
of my group members was more comfortable with the lip syncing task, which is where
the difficulty began as the other group member was preventing us from completing the
task.
For future tense, I will be taking this into consideration for when we begin to create
our official music video.
