Similarities Between Rodin And Klimt
There are several different works called The Kiss, created by different artists. Auguste Rodin,
Constatin Brancusi, and Gustav Klimt all have their own version of the work. While Rodin and
Brancusi created a sculpture, Klimt created a painting. These artists conveyed many different
emotions for their viewers to perceive. These works of art also have several things in common. It is
important to learn about each artist in order to learn the ideas and thoughts that come from their
works. Auguste Rodin was French sculptor, known to be innovative and to put much spiritual and
emotional depth into his works. He lived from November 12, 1840 until November 17, 1917.He was
considered to be a realist and the originator of modern sculpture. Rodin ... Show more content on

Klimt's purpose of the painting is known to show a kiss in an erotic way, with much details, while
Brancusi's sculpture is simple and to the point, expressing the idea of love. Gustav Klimt, a member
of the Vienna Secession movement, was an Austrian painter known as a symbolist. Gustav Klimt
trained at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts as an architectural painter from 1876 until 1883. His
talent was shown at a very early age. He primarily produced paintings, murals, and sketches in
which he continuously focused on the female body. Klimt was known to have an obsession with
women, especially red heads. Many of his paintings have a hidden sexual meaning. Klimt steered
away from traditional allegory and symbolism. His painting "The Kiss" is from his prominent
'Golden Phase' which was known for its success. During this period he often used gold leaf. He
began working on one of his most famous paintings, The Kiss, in 1907. Some of the mediums used
were oil pant and gold leaf on an oil canvas, 180x180cm.The use of gold leaf has links to both the
Bronze Age art and Western Art from the use of spiral patterns and decorative tendrils. In this
painting, he depicts a couple embracing covered in elaborately decorated robes in a field of flowers.
The mans robe is gold, covered black, white, and red rectangles and circles. The woman is wearing a

Art Allows Me to Leave Reality Essay
Good art allows me to flee the realms of reality. In my mind's limitless consciousness, I can escape
the mundanity of everyday life. It opens a door in my head to a world only limited by my
imagination. I am no more a slave to gravity, chained down on the earth when I am reading. I can be
a bird and soar high above the clouds, or be a fish and swim deep down in the darkest depths of the
ocean. I am there, I am that person, and everything else around me regardless of what it is, fades
away. Sometimes these people are the one's I'd like to be but sometimes I encounter nefarious
characters I wholly condemn. I am able to feel the emotions that the artist intends for me to feel.
However, it is not merely reading or listening, but understanding ... Show more content on

Languages form an essential part of every human experience. To express oneself is one of the
simplest joys we can experience. English and Music are two such languages in my life, that
indirectly relate to, have a profound impact on mine. My interests in Music, just as in Literature,
extend to a wide array of genres, whether it be Bob Dylan or Tchaikovsky. After relentless
perseverance at the age of 16, My father bought me a black dreadnought. I spent hours upon hours
practicing by watching instructional videos and my favorite guitar players play. In no time I was
playing shows, from winning school competitions to performing at live music theatre events. I had
soon established a name for myself as a singer–songwriter by being a supporting act for many
bands. I soon began recording my rendition of songs on my laptop, eventually writing my own
music and now working on my album. This has proved to be a huge learning curve, in enabling me
to understand the dynamics of a composition, Thereby continually improving myself. In my spare
time, I have been teaching English to Arab students. It has been a remarkably challenging
experience. I have learned far more teaching than I had as a student, in trying to articulate my
thoughts in words they could understand. This has been a humbling and rewarding experience. I
realize there remains a vast ocean of knowledge I am still unaware of, which empowers me to thrive
and work hard in an undergraduate environment.

Gustav Klimt Research Paper
Gustav Klimt was one of the most decorative and erotic painters in the 19th century with having
worked iconic paintings such as The Kiss and the Portrait of Adele Bloch Bauer. He was against the
traditional culture of art which was being anti–decorative and erotic. Klimt was born in 1862 in
Vienna Austria. "His father Ernest was a immigrant from Bohemia to Austria and was coping to
engrave gold while his mother Anna was talented in the field of music but was never to put a vision
to her dreams to become a musician." (Bio.com) Klimt was so talented at the early age, that his
school sent him to another school which was the Vienna School of Arts and Craft on a full
scholarship at the age of 14 even though he was raised in poverty. While he was in the art school, he
was mostly focused on architectural painting as he wanted to become a drawing instructor as his
first career choice of a artist career. However with having such talent, Gustav ideas expended and
while still in school, he was receiving small commission. After graduating the school in 1883, his
younger brother Ernst and their friend Franz Masch opened a new studio. ... Show more content on

Descriptive Experience Of A Museum
When I first saw the museum I was amazed because the museum is surrounded by such beautiful
environment, being around such green grass, trees, and the sea although it was quite a way away
from the museum. The exterior of the museum, in my opinion, was a very cool be modelled after
Roman architecture. After entering in the lobby, I found it to be very orderly and the security gave
me a sense that the museum was heavenly guarded. After walking around the interior of the
museum, with security guards in every room, I found that it was just as great as the exterior. The
interior was amazing because each room was wide and each painting or sculpture was organized by
country and artist making a very order museum atmosphere which allowed viewers to think about
the artworks. Another thing about the inside of the museum was that each room was painted and
lighted to not clash with the artworks in the room, allowing viewers from all around the world to see
the true beauty of the artwork without the room messing up their perception of the paintings or
sculptures.
The first of the paintings I going to write about is the Allée at Schloss Kammer. The Allée at Schloss
Kammer is an oil painting which was painted by Gustav Klimt in 1912 making it one of his late
works. The painting had powerful spots of color, with a semi–rough texture I think, and showed a
multiple trees overlapping a castle creating a very beautiful painting. After reading the painting's
label I found that the castle was a

How Destruction Is Used As A Form Of Creation Everyday
I will use this chapter to look at the many ways destruction is used as a form of creation everyday in
western society and how we value it on a personal level. 'change is a natural and organic process,
one that is inherent with being human and of this world. Within this context, the change a person
personally experiences is meaningful.' (Russell and Russell, p16). Change is fundamental to our
universe. Everything in the physical world is either growing or deteriorating and our human
condition could perhaps be said to be a constant process of slowing down or speeding up, in other
words taking control over this rate of change. The ability to control is seen as a valuable commodity
and taking control over elements in one's environment in even ... Show more content on

For instance, a portrait by Leonardo da Vinci exclusively focuses the viewer's attention on the end
result. The first thought when examining The Mona Lisa for example, is not about how much paint
was dried and how the pristine white canvas was covered with colour and how many pencils or
sticks of charcoal were used in the initial sketches to create it. On the other hand there is art that
brings the concept of destruction to the forefront and the viewer can think of little else. Gustav
Metzger coined the term Auto–Destructive Art in the late 1950s to mean a public form of art that is
non–permanent and is destroyed by the artist or by itself in the process of its creation (Metzger,
1959). Metzger created art by painting and spraying stretched pieces of nylon with hydrochloric
acid. He created these pieces in public, the public gaze being an important factor in the outcome,
and which will be more thoroughly covered in chapter three. The spraying of the acid, the
disintegration of the nylon or the resulting scraps of fabric could all be considered art and it is left
up to the viewer to decide which aspect of the creation holds most meaning and therefore value to
them. If Metzger had simply presented the scraps of nylon after creating them in private, his work
would not have had produced much of an emotional reaction in the audience, as witnessing the
process of destruction was integral to the piece of art.

The Sitter Of Gustav Klimt
Up until the 18th century, status, position and character of the sitter were of a more importance.
However as we proceed into the 19th and 20th century these fundamentals of portraiture makes a
diverging change. Amongst the many 20th century painters Gustav Klimt was known for his
decorative style and depicting bodies of erotic art. Klimt was also a member of the Vienna Secession
in which a group of Austrian artists who had resigned from the Association of Austrian Artists
gathered together with a mission of bringing modern European art to Austria. The portrait of Adele

I Am Waiting For The Concert
Sunday, May 29th 2016, 2:55PM: I am waiting for the concert to begin as I watch the musicians
walk onto the stage one by one, rehearsing a few notes on their instrument to warm up a bit and
probably test the pitch of the instrument. As more and more get up on the stage, the sound of them
rehearsing feel more and more chaotic, confusing and hard to follow, reminding me of Stravinski's
work. All of the sudden, they stop and start playing harmoniously a few notes thus inviting the
conductor on the stage – the concert was about to start.
Before the main performance, there were two shorter pieces, Ibert's Bacchanale and Dusapin's
Outscape. In retrospec,t both were wonderful choices as a prelude to Holst's The Planets as I felt the
three pieces fit well together when put back to back and they even inspired to me an overarching
message.
Jacques Ibert's Bacchanale was composed in 1956, only 6 years before it's author's death. Unlike his
previous compositions which were marked by the tension and turmoil of the interwar period and
World War 2, Bacchanale is the culmination of his rather wild and hard to pigeonhole style. The title
evokes the Roman festival bearing the same name, a tribute to the wine god Bacchus. Bacchanalia
were notorious for the excessive drinking, dancing and performing for as long as the participants
could remain standing and they were living proof of the carefree lifestyle Romans could afford to
have.
The composition itself mirrors this style, having as a

Prelude To A Kiss
Prelude to a Kiss by Craig Lucas, is about a newly married couple that experiences a supernatural
event that will test their love and commitment towards each other. This play was a very interesting
and comedic read. Prelude to a kiss is a play any audience would enjoy and get something out of it .
Therefore, UNI ought to produce Prelude to a Kiss next year or at least soon. It is a great romantic
comedy for the audience to see and will leave the audience appreciating their life more. Prelude to a
Kiss is set in the modern times, probably around the 1990's for it has some modern elements but
some of the jokes they give or things they talk about seem dated. The time span of the play is the

The author Craig Lucas never gave an explanation on why there was a supernatural element just
there was one and it made the conflict. Beside the supernatural aspect there was some spirituality in
the play. Craig Lucas never mentioned in the play that they were religious but they had a christian
wedding so there must have a spiritual element in there beside the supernatural. The language of the
play was very modern, but when Rita and the Old Man changed bodies, the Old Man would say
many oldish sayings or just many things that didn't fit with how Rita and Peter talked. Also, many
times when one of the characters were speaking, other characters speak over them so they did a lot
of overlapping. At times it was kind of confusing and chaotic but it just added a human element. The
way they spoke made them seem nervous and willing to fill up empty void as to not have awkward
silence. The nature of the play was very evident in the script. Peter was the only one who ever
acknowledged the audiences, in fact he spoke directly to the audience in several different occasions.
So this play has a presentational contract with a non realistic vibe due to having a supernatural
occurrence happen on stage. Craig

Biography of Gustav Mahler
To Sibelius, Mahler expressed the belief that "The symphony must be like the world. It must
embrace everything." Biography Gustav Mahler, a late–Romantic Austrian composer, was born on
July 7th, 1860 in what was then the Austro–Hungarian Empire, now Kaliště in the Czech Republic.
The region where Mahler spent his youth was strongly associated with the Czech independence
movement. Being a Jew, Mahler had developed an everlasting sense of exile, illustrated by his
famous quote "I am thrice homeless, as a native of Bohemia in Austria, as an Austrian among
Germans, and as a Jew throughout the world. Everywhere an intruder never welcomed." Mahler was
considered by the public to be a great conductor with symphonies which were too long for their
liking, while Mahler viewed himself as a composer, forced to spend most of his years conducting.
His status as a conductor was unquestionably established, while his own pieces started to gain
momentum after periods of immense neglect, which included a ban on their performance in a good
deal of Europe throughout the Nazi era. As a composer, Mahler acted as a bridge between the 19th–
century Austro–German tradition and the modernism of the early 20th century. Mahler is well
known for his lengthy, deep, and painfully emotional works. He adored nature and all life within it,
but due to his early exposure to the darkness life brings, a suicide and a brutal rape he witnessed,
Mahler feared death. This duality is evident in just about all his

The Kiss, And 'The Kiss' Made By Gustav Klimt
Whether on purpose or not, artworks will always have emotion and messages etched into them
which viewers pick up on. The viewers develop these emotions and messages by analysing certain
elements and principles of the piece. One can often find that if you use an element in two ways that
are the complete opposite to each other, you will effect the mood similarly. For example, cool
colours are associated with sadness, while warm tones with happiness. Another example being that
of the two emotions love and loneliness which are openly displayed in two pieces we will be
analysing. The first being a Austrian piece 'The Kiss' made by Gustav Klimt in 1908. A well known
piece highly associated with love, and quite the opposite to Russel Drysdale's 'The Drover's Wife'.
Made in 1945, the Australia artwork shows loneliness. These two artworks deliver completely
different meanings to the viewers simply by differing the ways in which certain elements and
principles are used. Some of which being colour, space, and emphasis. By analysing these emotive
pieces, we will develop an understanding of why and how art can make us feel different emotions.
The beautiful, gilded style piece that is known as 'The Kiss' is an emotive piece expressing love. The
focal point of this piece is the two lovers embraced in a kiss in the centre of the canvas. The artwork
on its own shows a strong display of emotion, an evoked love, passion and love. How the audience
comes to this conclusion is in how Klimt uses

Principally, the theory of "restrictive" sovereign immunity is basically when the Department of
States can elect to instill immunity, or otherwise not let immunity happen (Murphy, 305). There are
specifically two areas that either allows this unit to acclaim immunity and or reject immunity
(Murphy, 305). The first area is known as jure imperii. When governments of other nations have an
undertaking that is relevant to the community, then immunity is acclaimed (Murphy, 305). The
second area is known as jure gestionis. If a government of another nation has relayed information on
undertakings in being profit–oriented, then rejecting immunity is the option (Murphy, 305).

3rd Writing Assignment
At the end of the 19th century, fin de siècle did not just indicate the end of one century: it indicated
the collapse of language and a way of thinking. This idea was illustrated by works such as von
Hofmannstahl's Lord Chandos Letter and Schnitzler's Dream Story, which seem to argue that a new
mode of thinking was necessary for a new age. Indeed, Freud's writings and Trakl's poems offered
this new mode of thinking by challenging the border between what is "real" and what is "imaginary"
through their works. In music and art, a similar trend was taking place: late 19th century works
offered the audience a window into the artist's emotions, experiences, and desires. This idea is seen
in Gustav Mahler's 1st Symphony and Egon Schiele's Seated Male Nude, in which both artists
channel their experiences and emotions to release suppressed elements of their psyches. However,
the purpose for their expressivity is different: Mahler's expressivity stems from a desire to find relief
from mental stress stemming from his turbulent life, Schiele's from a desire to explore new ways of
conveying the self.
Mahler's 1st Symphony holds an intimate relationship with his childhood and upbringing; the music
reflects and reveals Mahler's experiences and desires for what his future will look like. From the
beginning of his 1st Symphony, Mahler paints a vast, open space with the string's sustained, unison

The Old Man And The Sea
Gustav Freytag, a famous German novelist and playwright, developed a well–known structure
himself called Freytag's Pyramid or dramatic structure. Freytag's Pyramid is divided into five stages
the exposition, the rising action, climax, falling action, and the denouement. Each one of the stages
describe the different parts of novels and short stories. Ernest Hemingway author of "Hills Like
White Elephants" and other works, such as, "A Farewell to Arms" and "The Old Man and the Sea"
has made many accomplishments throughout his writing career. His novel "The Old Man and the
Sea" won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953. Hemingway also received the Nobel Prize for
literature in 1954. Hemingway's works are great examples of stories that displays the five stages of
fiction. "Hills Like White Elephants" was published in 1927 in Hemingway's second collection of
short stories. "Hills Like White Elephants" is the story of two characters, the American and Jig, and
their conversation at a train station in a valley in Spain. The two lovers talk vaguely about an
operation and both have opposing views on it; Jig ends the conflict by giving in to the American's

Women During The Greek Period
Women during The Greek Period and Now Art and sculptures have been created since the beginning
of mankind in order to express themselves and demonstrate human potential. From simple carvings
on a rock walls to magnificent works of art, such as the sixteenth chapel, art has continued to
progress throughout time and it continues to progresses even further. There are many different types
of art to depict different things the artist wants to transfer to his viewers if not created for himself.
Since works of art are made to express aspects within life, it creates symbolics meanings the vary on
the message the artist wants to give out. Besides symbolic meanings, a work of art can notify the
viewer of the history during the time period it was created, roles within society, the way people lived
during the time it was made, how society functioned, what they believed in, and many more things
about life that are uncountable. Women were among one of the things artist painted and sculpted
about. They did this and continue to do this in order to show what women meant to people during
that time. Comparing an old painting with a contemporary painting we can see how some aspects,
techniques, and styles within the art have changed and how women 's roles have become different in
society over the course of time. We can also see what artistic aspects, techniques, and style have
remained the same, and what we can see what has remained the same about women today. We can

Who Is Gustav Klimt Scandal
During his lifetime, Gustav Klimt rose to fame due to the scandal his paintings causes. With his art,
he shocked his way to success, with his erotic depictions in stark moral contrast with turn–of–the
century Austrian society. As said in Gustav Klimt: Modernism in the Making, "Klimt's reputation
grew as much upon scandal as it did upon the quality of work itself."
But what exactly was the scandal? Nude paintings were hardly new to the art world. It wasn't
subject that was causing a stir, but rather the actions of his subjects. Klimt explicitly depicted female
masturbation and lesbianism in his art. "Apart from the studies depicting the most intimate union of
man and woman, the artist concentrated mainly on the various forms of self–gratifying ... Show

This painting was considered so scandalous that it was kept in a special cabinet and rarely showed
as not only did Klimt portray the uncomfortable truth about infant mortality but also depicted a
pregnant woman in a sexual manner. Typically, that whenever a pregnant woman is depicted in art,
she is shown with about as much sexuality as the Virgin Mary. Jill Lloyd, an expert in twentieth–
century German and Austrian art wrote that "Klimt's allegorical women, moreover, are frequently
seductive; even a young woman in the full bloom of pregnancy like Hope I has a seductive allure.
Whereas anti–feminists associated women with traditional, saintly ideas of motherhood that were
radically opposed to the threatening sexuality of the prostitute or femme fatale, Klimt combines
elements of both stereotypes to achieve a more complex, ambivalent representations." Even society,
currently likes to hold onto the idea that once a woman has given birth, she is no longer a sexual
being.
Even more controversial was Water Serpents I, painted in 1907. The painting shows two women
both nude and surrounded by the typical Klimt level of ostentatious ornamentation. These two
women are both nude and in a clearly sexual

Development Of The Vienna Secession
Development of the Vienna Secession
The establishment of the Viennese Secession in 1897 marked the genesis of modern art in Austria–a
nation at the time known for its strong holdings on conservative traditions and values. It was the first
movement of artists and designers who were devoted to the renewal of art's meaning–the projection
of inner states of emotion. Led by Gustav Klimt, the Secession was the most influential breakaway;
rejecting the revivalist styles endorsed by the conservative academies, the group promoted an art
that would celebrity modernity. The Secession was largely attributed for the responsibility of the rise
to international fame of several of its members, including Gustav Klimt, Joseph Maria Olbrich,
Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffman, who helped Austrian art become renowned once again. There
were no unifying characteristics between paintings or sculptures, or even architecture: instead, its
members were committed to the ideal of modernizing Austrian art by acquainting it with latest
modern art movements–Art Nouveau, Post–Impressionism and Expressionism. The initial
movement was short lived. By 1905, there were internal divisions ultimately fracturing the "group's
monopoly on the scene for contemporary and decorative arts" (Rosenman). However, the Secession
was vital for the promotion of Austrian contemporary art.
In 1903, Hoffman and fellow associate Moser and banker Fritz Warndorfer founded the Wiener

The Work Of Egon Schiele
Introduction
The work of Egon Schiele is very important to me personally.
In this Extended Essay I focus on Egon Schiele because his artworks influence me. He likes to show
his hands in his painting and photos. In his self–painting, I can always find out that the hands always
attract my eyes. His hands really impress me and I really like his hands. This gives me an idea that
to put my own hands on the social software and see that will people love my hands in this era. Now,
I think the answer is yes. There are more than 6,000 people like my hands in that social software.
Egon Schiele used different action of his hands to show his expression and maybe his attitude to the
era. That makes me pay attention to Egon Schiele's life and experience, and then I am interested in
Egon Schiele's whole life. Although he do not had a long life, I still want to explain the meaning of
his short life.
Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter, who is the disciple of Gustav Klimt. In the early 20th century,
Egon Schiele was one of the major figurative painters at that era. His artwork is famous for its
intensity and also its raw sexuality. For example, the paintings of naked women and the many self–
portraits he produced, including naked self–portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive
line of Egon Schiele 's paintings and drawings marked him as a pioneer of Expressionism in the
early 20th century.

The Kiss By Gustav Klimt
Born in 1862, Gustav Klimt is an Austrian artist who is best known for his ornate paintings and
involvement in the Art Nouveau movement. He often used mixed media in his work, incorporating
paint, gold leafing, beads and jewels. According to restorers, he did not use varnish on his painting.
This helped Klimt avoid a shiny finish over the canvas and made the paint quite 'dry'. His most
popular work could be described as a coming together of realistic and natural forms and intricate
decoration. The Art Nouveau movement is best defined by a move away from conservative and
traditional ideals. It focused a lot on design and the incorporation of objects. Art Nouveau is closely
related to the Arts and Crafts movement. Gustav Klimt is most known for his painting The Kiss and
it is often still referenced today as a pop culture icon. Completed between 1907 and 1908, The Kiss
depicts two human figures who appear to be flattened out. Their drapery and background are further
flattened by gold leafing and stylistic patterns. The painting is 1.8x1.8m and is oil paints on canvas.
The female figure is being held by a man who is turned away from the viewer. It leaves you with a
feeling of mystery. Along with The Kiss, Klimt's Beethoven frieze boosted his popularity. The fresco
mural was created solely as a tribute to a Max Klinger exhibition in 1902 and is the only work to
survive. The frieze depicted the struggles of humanity and overcoming the hostile throughout life.

were beginning to gain power; art was changing. Gustav Klimt and his Vienna Secession played a
great role in this modernization of Vienna. Klimt began as an academic painter; however, after both
his father and brother died, his style began to change. He helped found the Vienna Secession, and he
began to draw and paint nude models. He never married, but he had multiple affairs with his models.
During the 1890s–due to all the changes in his life and the city around him–his lifestyle and
therefore artistic style began to completely and radically change from heavily academic art to
extremely scandalous, almost pornographic work. The rise of feminism and general empowerment
of women in Vienna stimulated the Vienna Secession, specifically Gustav Klimt's work, which also
assisted the growth of feminist movements. Gustav Klimt and Viennese feminist movements had a
symbiotic relationship, each helping and needing the other succeed.
Klimt was not a feminist; however, without the feminist movements of Vienna, he would not have
been nearly as successful. He enjoyed the eroticization of women, and his work was rebellious in its
portrayal of nude women. Even his work that did not actually depict nude women was still
extremely sexual, and it was offensive due to its highly erotic and taboo nature. Klimt's art
astounded the Viennese population and became a scandal, making it more well–known.

Klimt The Kiss Summary
The painting was made by Gustav Klimt a now famous artist, he was born in the Austrian Empire. I
believe that Klimts "the Kiss" is a masterpiece that was under appreciated at his time. Today his
artwork the kiss is a widely popular piece of art made over one hundred and nearly 10 years ago.
Klimt was not a popular artist at the time and was widely viewed as a sinful artist because of a
painting he did earlier on. His painting "The Kiss" shows a man kissing a woman on the head and is
one of his most famous art pieces. It is a painting adored by many, for its strong golden based colors
and the way the artist expresses the male and female. The formal aspects of the kiss contain an array
of colors. The piece of art contains a very light sided color theme as its primary color is a golden
yellow. Around the figures heads he adds leafs to the males head in a crown shape to show that he is
important, like the leader of the situation, he also adds flowers to the females hair to emphasize the
Beauty of the woman. As you go down the male, his uniform seems to be laced with darker elements
along with the gold color to outline his side of the art and separate him from the female. As you go
down the females side she has flowers all over her dress to separate her from the males darker side
of the clothes, and outline the dress she is wearing. the display of colors on the female range from
mostly lighter colors to few dark colors in the flowers. and as you go further down you notice the

Gustav Mahler was born in 1860 in the small town of Kalischt, Bohemia. He was a late romantic–
era composer. He was one of the leading conductors of his generation. Mahler was a bridge between
the 19th–century Austro–German tradition and the modernism of the early 20th century. In 1897 he
was the director of the Vienna Court Opera. He stayed in Vienna for 10 years, but during that time
he got a lot of opposition from the Anti– Semitic Press. His awesome productions and high
production standards gave him the name of Greatest of Opera Conductors. Composing was only his
part time job as living as a conductor was his full time. Most of his pieces are for large orchestra
forces, symphonic choruses, and operatic soloists.

He left his school in 1878 with a diploma but no silver medal for outstanding achievement. Gustav
went to the University of Vienna for a year studying litature and philosophy. He than went on to

influences also had something else that some called "Pure Mahler." His first performance was
delayed till 1901 so they could make a shortened version of it. Gustav was interested in German
Philosophy and got introduced to the works of Arthur Schopenhauer, Friedrich Nietzsche, Gustav
Fechner and Hermann Lotze. These thinkers influenced Gustav's music long after his student years.
In 1881 Mahler did his first full–scale opera with a small but resourceful company. After his six–
month engagement he returned to Vienna and worked as a part–time chorus–master. In 1883 Mahler
started his first real job as a conductor but had a poor relationship with the orchestra but despite that
he made 5 new operas there and won over the press that earlier had insulted his work. He then went
on to the Royal Theater and after only a week was titled the theaters "musical and choral director."
Despite what the name makes you think the guy in charge of the music at the theater hated Mahler
and make it his goal to make him miserable. He than got a six year contract with Leipzip Opera

Gustav Mahler Essay
Mahler was born in Kalischt, Bohemia, on July 7, 1860. At the time, Bohemia (later to form a major
component of Czechoslovakia, and later the Czech Republic) was part of the Austro–Hungarian
empire, then enduring its final crumbling decades, and the region where Mahler spent his youth was
strongly associate with the Czech independence movement. However, Mahler also was a Jew, and
Jews in the region were associated by ethnic Czechs with Germans. Mahler famous quote is:
"I am thrice homeless, as a native of Bohemia in Austria, as an Austrian among Germans, and
as a Jew throughout the world. Everywhere an intruder, never welcomed." Then add to that the
fact that the public considered Mahler to be a gifted conductor with a habit of ... Show more content

He also ruled with an iron fist, helping create the image of conductor as dictator. This was not,
however, the result of simple ego, but rather of Mahler's artistic honesty and desire. When members
of the opera orchestra complained that one or another lazy practice was tradition, Mahler's favorite
reply was that "[t]radition is laziness." Mahler believed that opera was the highest form
of art, not mere entertainment. A classic example is when Mahler decided to give the Vienna
premiere of Charpentier's Louise. Charpentier came to the dress rehearsal and criticized the sets, the
costumes and Mahler's conducting. Mahler's reaction was to cancel the premier and redo the
costumes and set to Charpentier's specifications and studied the score with the composer so that his
conducting, too, would be to Charpentier's satisfaction.
Another demonstrative incident during his leadership of the Vienna Opera was his attempts to
present Richard Strauss' opera, Salome. Mahler was a basically prudish man, and his wife, Alma
Mahler, later stated that he had argued against Strauss setting Wilde's Salome. Strauss, of course,
went ahead and composed the piece, submitted it for production by the Vienna Opera, and was
informed that the Censorship Board had banned the work due to Strauss' references to Christ

Klimt style of art developed when he worked with family portraits in the central hall of the Peles

Nouveau elements exist side by side. Klimt's work at Peles, in particular, needs to be understood
against the background of this eclecticism. (Curta, 2005) and several recent accounts of Klimt's life
and work have briefly referred to his Peles paintings. Gustav Klimt represent just such an active

Melody Of Love Analysis
The theme I chose is love, and I chose the early 1900s as a time period to focus on. I believe that
this is a topic worth exploring in humanities because everybody can relate to it, and people tend to
create impactful art, music, etc., in the name of love. Love can have a huge impact and play an
essential and influential role in a person's life. The reason why I chose this specific time period is
because I believe that it was a great time of romanticism. It was the beginning of a time where
people took different approaches to showcase their thoughts and feelings, especially through art and
music. The time period was also more modern, so many of the works involving love are relatable to
people today. "Melody of Love" – Composed by Hans Engelmann
Hans Engelmann lived from 1872 to 1914. He was a German composer who traveled to
Pennsylvania to pursue his dreams of becoming a professional pianist, as he was dissatisfied with
his life working in a mercantile office. Not much is remembered about him today, but his music was
very popular and appreciated during his time. Other songs composed by him include "Poppy Buds,"
"Heart's Melody," "Spanish Serenade," and many others. Our focus, "Melody of Love," was
composed in 1903 and was meant to be played on the piano. The cultural context of the song greatly
reflects Engelmann's German upbringing, where it is customary for young boys to go through
musical training at the time. The song was very popular at the time, and

Analyzing Intercultural Communication : An Intercultural...
Films are considered to be a very valuable tool when examining intercultural communications,
because they depict the way people and cultures communicate their identities. In The Woman In
Gold, Maria Altmann, a Jewish refugee teams up with a young but determined lawyer, Randy
Schoenberg (Reynolds), to reclaim the painting of her aunt, and with it, a part of her heritage. The
painting, completed by the very famous Gustav Klimt, was stolen from her home during World War
II. It was then displayed at the Belvedere, becoming what the movie refers to as the "Mona Lisa of
Austria." Due to its immense importance to the Austrian society and the personal connection to Mrs.
Altmann, the battle for the masterpiece is both an intercultural and an interpersonal conflict for the
characters. In many ways, The Woman In Gold, serves as a good example for the theories and
concepts of intercultural communication. The Martin and Nakayama text defines political history as
history that focuses on political events. But in the case with Maria Altmann, the holocaust was more
than just 'political history.' It was also a religious and ethnic history, in that it affected all of the
Jewish communities and shaped Jewish history in general. It even served as a cultural and a
diasporic history, after it changed Europe and provoked a massive migration of refugees. In short,
the war was not just an independent political event that "just happened", but an event that shaped
Mrs. Altmann's idea of self. The war

I feel that the fourteen members of chamber orchestra and the two vocalists did an outstanding job.
This piece was well put together. I loved the harmony that was brought forth between the orchestra
and the vocalists. The two vocalists a tenor known as Paul Groves and a soprano known as Anna
Larson, did a beautiful job staying in tune. The way that their voices went back and forth in
harmony was just beautiful. Although I enjoyed both pieces of music I really enjoyed the works of
Gustav Mahler and his piece Lied von der Erde. This piece is rich in drama. I feel that the texture
used is this song is imitative polyphony. I feel that there are various parts in this song that use the
similar melodies. I feel that the harmony between the two vocalists were right on with each other
and the orchestra. You can hear the brass instruments in the very beginning of the songs then the
strings, wind instruments along with the piano and keyboards begin to make their entrance. They
come together very strong but in a peaceful way at first. Towards the middle of the song the tempo
and rhythm really picks up (it seems as if all of their emotions are bursting out) then it slowly begins
to drop back to slower movements. You can really hear the strings during this time. But surprisingly

Gustav Mahler : An Era Of Musical Progression
Inspiration, idealistic, caustic, unorthodox, assertive, ambiguous, Gustav Mahler has astonished the
world with symphonies ranging in violence to tenderness throughout the 20th century. During an era
of musical progression in fin–de–siécle, an anxious mood, Mahler, a conductor and composer, took
an inherent stance in composition. Even though much of his musical works weren't popular until 40
years after his death, the discovery of his ingenious talents were unparalleled to other composers of
that time. His role in war and revolutionary music has led to advancements in orchestral repertoire
in his career as an opera conductor across Vienna. A unique sound in his nine full symphonies of
various forms of Romanticism made him a pioneer of compositional techniques that refined music
and influenced Arnold Schoenberg, Benjamin Britten, Dmitry Shostakovich, and other artists that
have contributed to revolutionary music.
Mahler's life began in Kaliště, Bohemia of Austrian Empire, on July 7, 1860. He was born Jewish
and part of a German–speaking minority, as opposed to the Czech population. Because of anti–
Semitic discrimination, that was becoming increasingly popular in that region, he had fewer
opportunities than most Aryan Germans. His interest in music first sparked as early as 4 years old
after he assembled common melodies on a piano from his grandmother's attic. At this age, his talent
in military music is also observed as he indulged in a folk song he heard near barracks by

Gustav Klimt created his oil on canvas painting The Kiss between 1907 and 1908 using oil with
layers of gold leaf. This piece also uses mosaic techniques as well as fresco. Just as the title

embracing the woman, the woman in return is accepting the kiss and leaning up to him (Cruz 34).
The painting is exhibited at the Osterrelchische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna, Austria. The Kiss is a
large piece measuring 180 x 180 cm, roughly a square of 6' x 6' (Nerit 1). There are several elements

Movie Analysis : The Movie ' Starts With Klimt '
1. This movies employs an unreliable and omniscient narration. This film is not structured
chronological, but rather takes on the role of square dancing. Therefore, the movie starts with Klimt
on a bed in the hospital and the last scene is him, dead, on the same bed. Moreover, the second scene
is Klimt being in cafe society event with cake being a recurring object and the scene before he dies
focuses on a table full of cakes in that same event.
2. The point of view presented is through a combination of Klimt's and of Schiele's. This is
represented with the camera angle of the scene right before where Klimt 's hallucinations based on
his life are shown. The camera directs to Klimt pointing at the mirror which Schiele nears it, and
then it ripples into Klimt's life. Both of these artists' style is mostly absurd and distorted, which
reflects the way their mind is working, and because of this, it does to an extent hinder the objective
of the film.
3. There are three distinct main characters in this film. They include Gustav Klimt the artist, Midi
the fashion designer and a life companion of Klimt and Schiele who is Klimt's protege. There is a
fourth main character that is mentioned by the name of Lea De Castro an actress from George
Milenes' movie, where Klimt falls "in love" with her. However, there is no certainty that she is a real
person as she is portrayed in doubles. Moreover, Klimt saw her as a 'perfect' woman, which opposes

Essay on Gustav Holst
Gustav Holst
Music derived from astrology is surprisingly rare. The ancient Greek philosophers, whatever their
intellectual attitudes towards astrology may have been, were certainly not ignorant of astrological
teachings and ideas. It was they, after all who put forward the idea of the "Music of the Spheres", the
idea that these vast objects twirling around and whirling through space, must have hummed a tone
as they went along their courses, much as a ball spun on a string will whistle. They knew of seven
planets: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Not surprisingly, western music
evolved with seven–tone scales. Music and astrology come together again in this suite devoted to
the seven planets, though Uranus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From 1895 to 1898, he studied composition at the Royal College of Music. He eventually became an
orchestral trombonist, after teaching composition at Stanford University for some time. In 1905,
Holst was chosen as the Director of Music at the St. Paul's Girl's School in Hammersmith, just west
of London, which he did for almost of the rest of his life. One of Holst's contemporaries and good
friends was the noted composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. They often wrote letters, exchanging
critiques and ideas. Holst had a wife, Isobel, and a daughter, Imogen.
Holst's most famous work, The Planets, is a seven–movement orchestral suite. Each movement
represents a different planet in our solar system. Since The Planets is a work based on astrology, the
Earth is ignored in the movements. It should also be noted that this piece was also written before
Pluto was discovered, thus it only contains seven movements.
The first movement, Mars, the Bringer of War emphasizes bass and low brass using an unusual 5/4
rhythm. The greatest moment in war–torn Mars comes shortly before the end as the orchestra rises
to a massive climax, supported by organ and gong. It is a moment of sheer terror, transformed into a
still darker terror, as the same two–note motif is repeated in a lower register but still highly
dissonant. This is the first 'spiritual' moment of the work, in my opinion: the wrath of God at the
warring, sinful nature of Man and the consequences of this, as I

Klimt's Influence On Egon Schiele
Egon Schiele, early 20th century artist and apprentice of Gustav Klimt, caused quite a controversy
with his risquee nudes unapologetic eroticism. Schiele, though associated with figurative painting,
was also considered an early predecessor of the Expressionist movement through his expressive and
emotive lines. Schiele's paintings and drawings are far from being simply suggestive, and are rather
explicit in their subject matter. His blatant display of sexuality in the majority of his works has
consequently made his retrospective iconic, rather than raising only a few specific works to iconic
status. Schiele's pieces can often be characterized by its subject matter– models, mainly from lower
classes, and those near to him. By considering his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although he acted as protege to Gustav Klimt, a symbolist painter, he himself is characterized in a
figurative and early expressionist style. Figurative by definition indicates a work created according
to a real source, model or object. While almost all of Schiele's works are modelled after people, they
are not entirely realistic; whether that be by definition of colour, line, form or space. Schiele's
association with early Expressionism comes through his evident divergence of realism, seen through
his starkly contrasted colour palette and distorted, emotional lines (Schmidt 1988). Besides the
extremely risquee subject matter for a conservative pre World War I Austria, Schiele experimented
with the angles of his pieces. There are a handful of his works featuring more than one model, but
the relationship between the models is almost disconnected by a lack of linear perspective (Fischer
2004). In images such as Three Girls (1911) it is unclear whether three separate models are
interacting with one another, or rather one model who was drawn three times in different positions
and perspectives. Schiele is said to have drawn from atop a ladder to gain a "bird's eye view" per say
of his subjects (Fischer 2004). Through this process he could easily gain a sense of the sometimes
unnatural contortion of the bodies and adjust them accordingly. A more recognizable work to
consider is that of Seated Woman with Bent Knee (1917). While

Adolf Hitler spent much of his life wanting to be a painter and when he was eighteen years old he

When the museums are brought the paintings Jewish people will try to fight for the painting because
it was part of the heritage. Some museums cooperate and others do not and the battle between who
the painting belongs to becomes an enormous court battle. The central theme of The Rape of Europa
describes the lengths and expenses that a community should go to preserve their art. I believe that
communities should go extreme lengths and expenses to preserve their art because art is part of our
cultural and if past generations did not preserve their art then future generations would not be able to
learn about their cultural, background and heritage. Also, in earlier times art was a way of
communication. For instance, cave men and women would draw cave drawings and if scientist did
not preserve these drawings then we would not know what life was like back then. The arts are a
powerful vehicle for communication, a way to express visions that are beyond the capacity of words
and a medium for cultural enlightenment and insight. Art also allows viewers to connect with the art
and the artist in a deeper way than life can sometimes express. Communities should go extreme
lengths and expenses to preserve their art because it provided a deeper insight to life. One of the
most famous pieces of artwork that was purged during World War II by the German Nazis was

Essay about Egon Schiele's Self-Portrait
Egon Schiele's Self–Portrait
When I look at this portrait, the first thing that hits me is the way the artist, Egon Schiele, appears to
have made himself look animated, like a cartoon. The way in which his right eye is rounded like a
cartoon character and his left eye is squinting and almost shut, adds to the idea of a the portrait being
a cartoon. The squinted left eye is as if he is sneaking around and evaluating his surroundings. If you
cover the right side of the face (with the widely opened eye), it makes you realise that the left side
with the squinted eye does not look very lifelike, but the two eyes seem to cancel each other out.
The over exaggerated wrinkles on Schiele's face and neck make him look a lot older than he actually

I have found out that at the time of this painting, Egon Schiele like to give an expression of extreme
poverty. But his claims that at this time he was virtually in rags are at odds not only with what his
contemporaries have to say, but with the photographs taken of him. His letters make it plain that he
suffered from a degree of persecution mania (a feeling that others have evil designs against one's
well–being) – for example, he wrote in a letter of 1910: 'How hideous it is here! Everyone envies me
and conspires against me. Former colleagues regard me with malevolent eyes.' This information
could back up the idea that Schiele was making himself look older in the paintings and look
animated because he actually felt old, and the fact that the left eye is squinting as if looking around
and being paranoid could also be due to his persecution mania at the time.
The portrait is basically just an artist's self–portrait. Around this time, Egon Schiele became
fascinated by his own appearance, and made self–portraits in large numbers. This is one of those
portraits. The title does not give away any clues to the meaning or symbolism of the piece, it is just
called "Self–Portrait Pulling Cheek".
One of Schiele's idols was Gustav Klimt, who had previously studied at the same school, the School
of Arts and Crafts in Vienna. We cannot really compare any similarities between the two artists
styles, but we can maybe say that Schiele was influenced by

Similarities Between Rodin And Klimt Paintings

  • 1. Similarities Between Rodin And Klimt There are several different works called The Kiss, created by different artists. Auguste Rodin, Constatin Brancusi, and Gustav Klimt all have their own version of the work. While Rodin and Brancusi created a sculpture, Klimt created a painting. These artists conveyed many different emotions for their viewers to perceive. These works of art also have several things in common. It is important to learn about each artist in order to learn the ideas and thoughts that come from their works. Auguste Rodin was French sculptor, known to be innovative and to put much spiritual and emotional depth into his works. He lived from November 12, 1840 until November 17, 1917.He was considered to be a realist and the originator of modern sculpture. Rodin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Klimt's purpose of the painting is known to show a kiss in an erotic way, with much details, while Brancusi's sculpture is simple and to the point, expressing the idea of love. Gustav Klimt, a member of the Vienna Secession movement, was an Austrian painter known as a symbolist. Gustav Klimt trained at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts as an architectural painter from 1876 until 1883. His talent was shown at a very early age. He primarily produced paintings, murals, and sketches in which he continuously focused on the female body. Klimt was known to have an obsession with women, especially red heads. Many of his paintings have a hidden sexual meaning. Klimt steered away from traditional allegory and symbolism. His painting "The Kiss" is from his prominent 'Golden Phase' which was known for its success. During this period he often used gold leaf. He began working on one of his most famous paintings, The Kiss, in 1907. Some of the mediums used were oil pant and gold leaf on an oil canvas, 180x180cm.The use of gold leaf has links to both the Bronze Age art and Western Art from the use of spiral patterns and decorative tendrils. In this painting, he depicts a couple embracing covered in elaborately decorated robes in a field of flowers. The mans robe is gold, covered black, white, and red rectangles and circles. The woman is wearing a dress with different sized ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Art Allows Me to Leave Reality Essay Good art allows me to flee the realms of reality. In my mind's limitless consciousness, I can escape the mundanity of everyday life. It opens a door in my head to a world only limited by my imagination. I am no more a slave to gravity, chained down on the earth when I am reading. I can be a bird and soar high above the clouds, or be a fish and swim deep down in the darkest depths of the ocean. I am there, I am that person, and everything else around me regardless of what it is, fades away. Sometimes these people are the one's I'd like to be but sometimes I encounter nefarious characters I wholly condemn. I am able to feel the emotions that the artist intends for me to feel. However, it is not merely reading or listening, but understanding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Languages form an essential part of every human experience. To express oneself is one of the simplest joys we can experience. English and Music are two such languages in my life, that indirectly relate to, have a profound impact on mine. My interests in Music, just as in Literature, extend to a wide array of genres, whether it be Bob Dylan or Tchaikovsky. After relentless perseverance at the age of 16, My father bought me a black dreadnought. I spent hours upon hours practicing by watching instructional videos and my favorite guitar players play. In no time I was playing shows, from winning school competitions to performing at live music theatre events. I had soon established a name for myself as a singer–songwriter by being a supporting act for many bands. I soon began recording my rendition of songs on my laptop, eventually writing my own music and now working on my album. This has proved to be a huge learning curve, in enabling me to understand the dynamics of a composition, Thereby continually improving myself. In my spare time, I have been teaching English to Arab students. It has been a remarkably challenging experience. I have learned far more teaching than I had as a student, in trying to articulate my thoughts in words they could understand. This has been a humbling and rewarding experience. I realize there remains a vast ocean of knowledge I am still unaware of, which empowers me to thrive and work hard in an undergraduate environment. Art ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Gustav Klimt Research Paper Gustav Klimt was one of the most decorative and erotic painters in the 19th century with having worked iconic paintings such as The Kiss and the Portrait of Adele Bloch Bauer. He was against the traditional culture of art which was being anti–decorative and erotic. Klimt was born in 1862 in Vienna Austria. "His father Ernest was a immigrant from Bohemia to Austria and was coping to engrave gold while his mother Anna was talented in the field of music but was never to put a vision to her dreams to become a musician." (Bio.com) Klimt was so talented at the early age, that his school sent him to another school which was the Vienna School of Arts and Craft on a full scholarship at the age of 14 even though he was raised in poverty. While he was in the art school, he was mostly focused on architectural painting as he wanted to become a drawing instructor as his first career choice of a artist career. However with having such talent, Gustav ideas expended and while still in school, he was receiving small commission. After graduating the school in 1883, his younger brother Ernst and their friend Franz Masch opened a new studio. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One high–profiled work that they made together at the time were the murals of the Vienna Burgtheater and ceiling above the staircase at the Kunschithistiches Museum. • 7. Descriptive Experience Of A Museum When I first saw the museum I was amazed because the museum is surrounded by such beautiful environment, being around such green grass, trees, and the sea although it was quite a way away from the museum. The exterior of the museum, in my opinion, was a very cool be modelled after Roman architecture. After entering in the lobby, I found it to be very orderly and the security gave me a sense that the museum was heavenly guarded. After walking around the interior of the museum, with security guards in every room, I found that it was just as great as the exterior. The interior was amazing because each room was wide and each painting or sculpture was organized by country and artist making a very order museum atmosphere which allowed viewers to think about the artworks. Another thing about the inside of the museum was that each room was painted and lighted to not clash with the artworks in the room, allowing viewers from all around the world to see the true beauty of the artwork without the room messing up their perception of the paintings or sculptures. The first of the paintings I going to write about is the Allée at Schloss Kammer. The Allée at Schloss Kammer is an oil painting which was painted by Gustav Klimt in 1912 making it one of his late works. The painting had powerful spots of color, with a semi–rough texture I think, and showed a multiple trees overlapping a castle creating a very beautiful painting. After reading the painting's label I found that the castle was a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. How Destruction Is Used As A Form Of Creation Everyday I will use this chapter to look at the many ways destruction is used as a form of creation everyday in western society and how we value it on a personal level. 'change is a natural and organic process, one that is inherent with being human and of this world. Within this context, the change a person personally experiences is meaningful.' (Russell and Russell, p16). Change is fundamental to our universe. Everything in the physical world is either growing or deteriorating and our human condition could perhaps be said to be a constant process of slowing down or speeding up, in other words taking control over this rate of change. The ability to control is seen as a valuable commodity and taking control over elements in one's environment in even ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance, a portrait by Leonardo da Vinci exclusively focuses the viewer's attention on the end result. The first thought when examining The Mona Lisa for example, is not about how much paint was dried and how the pristine white canvas was covered with colour and how many pencils or sticks of charcoal were used in the initial sketches to create it. On the other hand there is art that brings the concept of destruction to the forefront and the viewer can think of little else. Gustav Metzger coined the term Auto–Destructive Art in the late 1950s to mean a public form of art that is non–permanent and is destroyed by the artist or by itself in the process of its creation (Metzger, 1959). Metzger created art by painting and spraying stretched pieces of nylon with hydrochloric acid. He created these pieces in public, the public gaze being an important factor in the outcome, and which will be more thoroughly covered in chapter three. The spraying of the acid, the disintegration of the nylon or the resulting scraps of fabric could all be considered art and it is left up to the viewer to decide which aspect of the creation holds most meaning and therefore value to them. If Metzger had simply presented the scraps of nylon after creating them in private, his work would not have had produced much of an emotional reaction in the audience, as witnessing the process of destruction was integral to the piece of art. • 11. The Sitter Of Gustav Klimt Up until the 18th century, status, position and character of the sitter were of a more importance. However as we proceed into the 19th and 20th century these fundamentals of portraiture makes a diverging change. Amongst the many 20th century painters Gustav Klimt was known for his decorative style and depicting bodies of erotic art. Klimt was also a member of the Vienna Secession in which a group of Austrian artists who had resigned from the Association of Austrian Artists gathered together with a mission of bringing modern European art to Austria. • 13. I Am Waiting For The Concert Sunday, May 29th 2016, 2:55PM: I am waiting for the concert to begin as I watch the musicians walk onto the stage one by one, rehearsing a few notes on their instrument to warm up a bit and probably test the pitch of the instrument. As more and more get up on the stage, the sound of them rehearsing feel more and more chaotic, confusing and hard to follow, reminding me of Stravinski's work. All of the sudden, they stop and start playing harmoniously a few notes thus inviting the conductor on the stage – the concert was about to start. Before the main performance, there were two shorter pieces, Ibert's Bacchanale and Dusapin's Outscape. In retrospec,t both were wonderful choices as a prelude to Holst's The Planets as I felt the three pieces fit well together when put back to back and they even inspired to me an overarching message. Jacques Ibert's Bacchanale was composed in 1956, only 6 years before it's author's death. Unlike his previous compositions which were marked by the tension and turmoil of the interwar period and World War 2, Bacchanale is the culmination of his rather wild and hard to pigeonhole style. The title evokes the Roman festival bearing the same name, a tribute to the wine god Bacchus. Bacchanalia were notorious for the excessive drinking, dancing and performing for as long as the participants could remain standing and they were living proof of the carefree lifestyle Romans could afford to have. The composition itself mirrors this style, having as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Prelude To A Kiss Prelude to a Kiss by Craig Lucas, is about a newly married couple that experiences a supernatural event that will test their love and commitment towards each other. This play was a very interesting and comedic read. Prelude to a kiss is a play any audience would enjoy and get something out of it . Therefore, UNI ought to produce Prelude to a Kiss next year or at least soon. It is a great romantic comedy for the audience to see and will leave the audience appreciating their life more. Prelude to a Kiss is set in the modern times, probably around the 1990's for it has some modern elements but some of the jokes they give or things they talk about seem dated. The time span of the play is the time it takes to perform it, but it usually has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The author Craig Lucas never gave an explanation on why there was a supernatural element just there was one and it made the conflict. Beside the supernatural aspect there was some spirituality in the play. Craig Lucas never mentioned in the play that they were religious but they had a christian wedding so there must have a spiritual element in there beside the supernatural. The language of the play was very modern, but when Rita and the Old Man changed bodies, the Old Man would say many oldish sayings or just many things that didn't fit with how Rita and Peter talked. Also, many times when one of the characters were speaking, other characters speak over them so they did a lot of overlapping. At times it was kind of confusing and chaotic but it just added a human element. The way they spoke made them seem nervous and willing to fill up empty void as to not have awkward silence. The nature of the play was very evident in the script. Peter was the only one who ever acknowledged the audiences, in fact he spoke directly to the audience in several different occasions. So this play has a presentational contract with a non realistic vibe due to having a supernatural occurrence happen on stage. Craig ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Biography of Gustav Mahler To Sibelius, Mahler expressed the belief that "The symphony must be like the world. It must embrace everything." Biography Gustav Mahler, a late–Romantic Austrian composer, was born on July 7th, 1860 in what was then the Austro–Hungarian Empire, now Kaliště in the Czech Republic. The region where Mahler spent his youth was strongly associated with the Czech independence movement. Being a Jew, Mahler had developed an everlasting sense of exile, illustrated by his famous quote "I am thrice homeless, as a native of Bohemia in Austria, as an Austrian among Germans, and as a Jew throughout the world. Everywhere an intruder never welcomed." Mahler was considered by the public to be a great conductor with symphonies which were too long for their liking, while Mahler viewed himself as a composer, forced to spend most of his years conducting. His status as a conductor was unquestionably established, while his own pieces started to gain momentum after periods of immense neglect, which included a ban on their performance in a good deal of Europe throughout the Nazi era. As a composer, Mahler acted as a bridge between the 19th– century Austro–German tradition and the modernism of the early 20th century. Mahler is well known for his lengthy, deep, and painfully emotional works. He adored nature and all life within it, but due to his early exposure to the darkness life brings, a suicide and a brutal rape he witnessed, Mahler feared death. This duality is evident in just about all his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The Kiss, And 'The Kiss' Made By Gustav Klimt Whether on purpose or not, artworks will always have emotion and messages etched into them which viewers pick up on. The viewers develop these emotions and messages by analysing certain elements and principles of the piece. One can often find that if you use an element in two ways that are the complete opposite to each other, you will effect the mood similarly. For example, cool colours are associated with sadness, while warm tones with happiness. Another example being that of the two emotions love and loneliness which are openly displayed in two pieces we will be analysing. The first being a Austrian piece 'The Kiss' made by Gustav Klimt in 1908. A well known piece highly associated with love, and quite the opposite to Russel Drysdale's 'The Drover's Wife'. Made in 1945, the Australia artwork shows loneliness. These two artworks deliver completely different meanings to the viewers simply by differing the ways in which certain elements and principles are used. Some of which being colour, space, and emphasis. By analysing these emotive pieces, we will develop an understanding of why and how art can make us feel different emotions. The beautiful, gilded style piece that is known as 'The Kiss' is an emotive piece expressing love. The focal point of this piece is the two lovers embraced in a kiss in the centre of the canvas. The artwork on its own shows a strong display of emotion, an evoked love, passion and love. How the audience comes to this conclusion is in how Klimt uses ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Define and explain the significance of jure imperii and jure gestionis (reference the theory of sovereign immunity to which they are relevant). Principally, the theory of "restrictive" sovereign immunity is basically when the Department of States can elect to instill immunity, or otherwise not let immunity happen (Murphy, 305). There are specifically two areas that either allows this unit to acclaim immunity and or reject immunity (Murphy, 305). The first area is known as jure imperii. When governments of other nations have an undertaking that is relevant to the community, then immunity is acclaimed (Murphy, 305). The second area is known as jure gestionis. If a government of another nation has relayed information on undertakings in being profit–oriented, then rejecting immunity is the option (Murphy, 305). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. S 1st Symphony And Lord Chandos Letter And Schnitzler's... Jaehun Lee 12/4/17 3rd Writing Assignment At the end of the 19th century, fin de siècle did not just indicate the end of one century: it indicated the collapse of language and a way of thinking. This idea was illustrated by works such as von Hofmannstahl's Lord Chandos Letter and Schnitzler's Dream Story, which seem to argue that a new mode of thinking was necessary for a new age. Indeed, Freud's writings and Trakl's poems offered this new mode of thinking by challenging the border between what is "real" and what is "imaginary" through their works. In music and art, a similar trend was taking place: late 19th century works offered the audience a window into the artist's emotions, experiences, and desires. This idea is seen in Gustav Mahler's 1st Symphony and Egon Schiele's Seated Male Nude, in which both artists channel their experiences and emotions to release suppressed elements of their psyches. However, the purpose for their expressivity is different: Mahler's expressivity stems from a desire to find relief from mental stress stemming from his turbulent life, Schiele's from a desire to explore new ways of conveying the self. Mahler's 1st Symphony holds an intimate relationship with his childhood and upbringing; the music reflects and reveals Mahler's experiences and desires for what his future will look like. From the beginning of his 1st Symphony, Mahler paints a vast, open space with the string's sustained, unison A. Various musical figures in the beginning of the 1st ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Who Is Gustav Klimt Scandal During his lifetime, Gustav Klimt rose to fame due to the scandal his paintings causes. With his art, he shocked his way to success, with his erotic depictions in stark moral contrast with turn–of–the century Austrian society. As said in Gustav Klimt: Modernism in the Making, "Klimt's reputation grew as much upon scandal as it did upon the quality of work itself." But what exactly was the scandal? Nude paintings were hardly new to the art world. It wasn't subject that was causing a stir, but rather the actions of his subjects. Klimt explicitly depicted female masturbation and lesbianism in his art. "Apart from the studies depicting the most intimate union of man and woman, the artist concentrated mainly on the various forms of self–gratifying ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jill Lloyd, an expert in twentieth– century German and Austrian art wrote that "Klimt's allegorical women, moreover, are frequently seductive; even a young woman in the full bloom of pregnancy like Hope I has a seductive allure. Whereas anti–feminists associated women with traditional, saintly ideas of motherhood that were radically opposed to the threatening sexuality of the prostitute or femme fatale, Klimt combines elements of both stereotypes to achieve a more complex, ambivalent representations." Even society, currently likes to hold onto the idea that once a woman has given birth, she is no longer a sexual being. Even more controversial was Water Serpents I, painted in 1907. • 35. Development Of The Vienna Secession Development of the Vienna Secession The establishment of the Viennese Secession in 1897 marked the genesis of modern art in Austria–a nation at the time known for its strong holdings on conservative traditions and values. It was the first movement of artists and designers who were devoted to the renewal of art's meaning–the projection of inner states of emotion. Led by Gustav Klimt, the Secession was the most influential breakaway; rejecting the revivalist styles endorsed by the conservative academies, the group promoted an art that would celebrity modernity. The Secession was largely attributed for the responsibility of the rise to international fame of several of its members, including Gustav Klimt, Joseph Maria Olbrich, Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffman, who helped Austrian art become renowned once again. There were no unifying characteristics between paintings or sculptures, or even architecture: instead, its members were committed to the ideal of modernizing Austrian art by acquainting it with latest modern art movements–Art Nouveau, Post–Impressionism and Expressionism. The initial movement was short lived. By 1905, there were internal divisions ultimately fracturing the "group's monopoly on the scene for contemporary and decorative arts" (Rosenman). However, the Secession was vital for the promotion of Austrian contemporary art. In 1903, Hoffman and fellow associate Moser and banker Fritz Warndorfer founded the Wiener Werkstatte, Vienna Workshop. It was a decorative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. The Kiss By Gustav Klimt Born in 1862, Gustav Klimt is an Austrian artist who is best known for his ornate paintings and involvement in the Art Nouveau movement. He often used mixed media in his work, incorporating paint, gold leafing, beads and jewels. According to restorers, he did not use varnish on his painting. This helped Klimt avoid a shiny finish over the canvas and made the paint quite 'dry'. His most popular work could be described as a coming together of realistic and natural forms and intricate decoration. The Art Nouveau movement is best defined by a move away from conservative and traditional ideals. It focused a lot on design and the incorporation of objects. Art Nouveau is closely related to the Arts and Crafts movement. Gustav Klimt is most known for his painting The Kiss and it is often still referenced today as a pop culture icon. Completed between 1907 and 1908, The Kiss depicts two human figures who appear to be flattened out. Their drapery and background are further flattened by gold leafing and stylistic patterns. The painting is 1.8x1.8m and is oil paints on canvas. The female figure is being held by a man who is turned away from the viewer. It leaves you with a feeling of mystery. Along with The Kiss, Klimt's Beethoven frieze boosted his popularity. The fresco mural was created solely as a tribute to a Max Klinger exhibition in 1902 and is the only work to survive. The frieze depicted the struggles of humanity and overcoming the hostile throughout life. The mural was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. Modernism: Vienna, Klimt, and Feminism Vienna was a city in turmoil at the end of the nineteenth century. Society was changing; women were beginning to gain power; art was changing. Gustav Klimt and his Vienna Secession played a great role in this modernization of Vienna. Klimt began as an academic painter; however, after both his father and brother died, his style began to change. He helped found the Vienna Secession, and he began to draw and paint nude models. He never married, but he had multiple affairs with his models. During the 1890s–due to all the changes in his life and the city around him–his lifestyle and therefore artistic style began to completely and radically change from heavily academic art to extremely scandalous, almost pornographic work. The rise of feminism and general empowerment of women in Vienna stimulated the Vienna Secession, specifically Gustav Klimt's work, which also assisted the growth of feminist movements. Gustav Klimt and Viennese feminist movements had a symbiotic relationship, each helping and needing the other succeed. Klimt was not a feminist; however, without the feminist movements of Vienna, he would not have been nearly as successful. He enjoyed the eroticization of women, and his work was rebellious in its portrayal of nude women. Even his work that did not actually depict nude women was still extremely sexual, and it was offensive due to its highly erotic and taboo nature. Klimt's art astounded the Viennese population and became a scandal, making it more well–known. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I believe that Klimts "the Kiss" is a masterpiece that was under appreciated at his time. Today his artwork the kiss is a widely popular piece of art made over one hundred and nearly 10 years ago. Klimt was not a popular artist at the time and was widely viewed as a sinful artist because of a painting he did earlier on. His painting "The Kiss" shows a man kissing a woman on the head and is one of his most famous art pieces. It is a painting adored by many, for its strong golden based colors and the way the artist expresses the male and female. The formal aspects of the kiss contain an array of colors. The piece of art contains a very light sided color theme as its primary color is a golden yellow. Around the figures heads he adds leafs to the males head in a crown shape to show that he is important, like the leader of the situation, he also adds flowers to the females hair to emphasize the Beauty of the woman. As you go down the male, his uniform seems to be laced with darker elements along with the gold color to outline his side of the art and separate him from the female. As you go down the females side she has flowers all over her dress to separate her from the males darker side of the clothes, and outline the dress she is wearing. the display of colors on the female range from mostly lighter colors to few dark colors in the flowers. and as you go further down you notice the ... He also ruled with an iron fist, helping create the image of conductor as dictator. This was not, however, the result of simple ego, but rather of Mahler's artistic honesty and desire. When members of the opera orchestra complained that one or another lazy practice was tradition, Mahler's favorite reply was that "[t]radition is laziness." Mahler believed that opera was the highest form of art, not mere entertainment. A classic example is when Mahler decided to give the Vienna premiere of Charpentier's Louise. Charpentier came to the dress rehearsal and criticized the sets, the costumes and Mahler's conducting. Mahler's reaction was to cancel the premier and redo the costumes and set to Charpentier's specifications and studied the score with the composer so that his conducting, too, would be to Charpentier's satisfaction. Another demonstrative incident during his leadership of the Vienna Opera was his attempts to present Richard Strauss' opera, Salome. Mahler was a basically prudish man, and his wife, Alma Mahler, later stated that he had argued against Strauss setting Wilde's Salome. Strauss, of course, went ahead and composed the piece, submitted it for production by the Vienna Opera, and was informed that the Censorship Board had banned the work due to Strauss' references to Christ ... • 53. Melody Of Love Analysis The theme I chose is love, and I chose the early 1900s as a time period to focus on. I believe that this is a topic worth exploring in humanities because everybody can relate to it, and people tend to create impactful art, music, etc., in the name of love. Love can have a huge impact and play an essential and influential role in a person's life. The reason why I chose this specific time period is because I believe that it was a great time of romanticism. It was the beginning of a time where people took different approaches to showcase their thoughts and feelings, especially through art and music. The time period was also more modern, so many of the works involving love are relatable to people today. "Melody of Love" – Composed by Hans Engelmann Hans Engelmann lived from 1872 to 1914. He was a German composer who traveled to Pennsylvania to pursue his dreams of becoming a professional pianist, as he was dissatisfied with his life working in a mercantile office. Not much is remembered about him today, but his music was very popular and appreciated during his time. Other songs composed by him include "Poppy Buds," "Heart's Melody," "Spanish Serenade," and many others. Our focus, "Melody of Love," was composed in 1903 and was meant to be played on the piano. The cultural context of the song greatly reflects Engelmann's German upbringing, where it is customary for young boys to go through musical training at the time. • 55. Analyzing Intercultural Communication : An Intercultural... Films are considered to be a very valuable tool when examining intercultural communications, because they depict the way people and cultures communicate their identities. In The Woman In Gold, Maria Altmann, a Jewish refugee teams up with a young but determined lawyer, Randy Schoenberg (Reynolds), to reclaim the painting of her aunt, and with it, a part of her heritage. The painting, completed by the very famous Gustav Klimt, was stolen from her home during World War II. It was then displayed at the Belvedere, becoming what the movie refers to as the "Mona Lisa of Austria." Due to its immense importance to the Austrian society and the personal connection to Mrs. Altmann, the battle for the masterpiece is both an intercultural and an interpersonal conflict for the characters. In many ways, The Woman In Gold, serves as a good example for the theories and concepts of intercultural communication. The Martin and Nakayama text defines political history as history that focuses on political events. But in the case with Maria Altmann, the holocaust was more than just 'political history.' It was also a religious and ethnic history, in that it affected all of the Jewish communities and shaped Jewish history in general. It even served as a cultural and a diasporic history, after it changed Europe and provoked a massive migration of refugees. In short, the war was not just an independent political event that "just happened", but an event that shaped Mrs. Altmann's idea of self. The war ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Gustav Mahler : An Era Of Musical Progression Inspiration, idealistic, caustic, unorthodox, assertive, ambiguous, Gustav Mahler has astonished the world with symphonies ranging in violence to tenderness throughout the 20th century. During an era of musical progression in fin–de–siécle, an anxious mood, Mahler, a conductor and composer, took an inherent stance in composition. Even though much of his musical works weren't popular until 40 years after his death, the discovery of his ingenious talents were unparalleled to other composers of that time. His role in war and revolutionary music has led to advancements in orchestral repertoire in his career as an opera conductor across Vienna. A unique sound in his nine full symphonies of various forms of Romanticism made him a pioneer of compositional techniques that refined music and influenced Arnold Schoenberg, Benjamin Britten, Dmitry Shostakovich, and other artists that have contributed to revolutionary music. Mahler's life began in Kaliště, Bohemia of Austrian Empire, on July 7, 1860. He was born Jewish and part of a German–speaking minority, as opposed to the Czech population. Because of anti– Semitic discrimination, that was becoming increasingly popular in that region, he had fewer opportunities than most Aryan Germans. Moreover, the second scene is Klimt being in cafe society event with cake being a recurring object and the scene before he dies focuses on a table full of cakes in that same event. 2. The point of view presented is through a combination of Klimt's and of Schiele's. This is represented with the camera angle of the scene right before where Klimt 's hallucinations based on his life are shown. The camera directs to Klimt pointing at the mirror which Schiele nears it, and then it ripples into Klimt's life. Both of these artists' style is mostly absurd and distorted, which reflects the way their mind is working, and because of this, it does to an extent hinder the objective of the film. 3. There are three distinct main characters in this film. They include Gustav Klimt the artist, Midi the fashion designer and a life companion of Klimt and Schiele who is Klimt's protege. There is a fourth main character that is mentioned by the name of Lea De Castro an actress from George Milenes' movie, where Klimt falls "in love" with her. However, there is no certainty that she is a real person as she is portrayed in doubles. Moreover, Klimt saw her as a 'perfect' woman, which opposes his view represented his paintings. He ... Difference Between Klimt And Claude Monet Gustav Klimt and Claude Monet both famous artist whom are born in different country which has different type of culture that influence the artist styles of painting or creating an artwork. Both are very different from each others artwork and both also have their own unique way of expressing their artwork. One thing they have in common is that both of them are involved in the making of modern arts. Gustav Klimt was a very well–known artist back in the 19th century, he was born on the 14th of July in 1862 in Vienna,Austria. His father, Ernst Klimt was a gold engraver whereas his mother, Anna Klimt whos ambition was to be a musical performer. When he was younger his father who was in a gold engraver had already taught him some arts and this made him realise his passion for arts. This paintings subject matters are the human figures and the patterns just like the pervious painting ' The Kiss'. He also uses symbolism for the black bird on the right side of the tree., it is said that the black bird often symbolize as death. To me this painting is well detailed with all the patterns and it also has a focal point which is the tree, the tree was the main reason why I choose this painting, it is an unusual way to draw an tree this ... • 71. Essay on Gustav Holst Gustav Holst Music derived from astrology is surprisingly rare. The ancient Greek philosophers, whatever their intellectual attitudes towards astrology may have been, were certainly not ignorant of astrological teachings and ideas. It was they, after all who put forward the idea of the "Music of the Spheres", the idea that these vast objects twirling around and whirling through space, must have hummed a tone as they went along their courses, much as a ball spun on a string will whistle. They knew of seven planets: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Not surprisingly, western music evolved with seven–tone scales. Music and astrology come together again in this suite devoted to the seven planets, though Uranus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From 1895 to 1898, he studied composition at the Royal College of Music. He eventually became an orchestral trombonist, after teaching composition at Stanford University for some time. In 1905, Holst was chosen as the Director of Music at the St. Paul's Girl's School in Hammersmith, just west of London, which he did for almost of the rest of his life. One of Holst's contemporaries and good friends was the noted composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. They often wrote letters, exchanging critiques and ideas. Holst had a wife, Isobel, and a daughter, Imogen. Holst's most famous work, The Planets, is a seven–movement orchestral suite. Each movement represents a different planet in our solar system. Since The Planets is a work based on astrology, the Earth is ignored in the movements. It should also be noted that this piece was also written before Pluto was discovered, thus it only contains seven movements. The first movement, Mars, the Bringer of War emphasizes bass and low brass using an unusual 5/4 rhythm. The greatest moment in war–torn Mars comes shortly before the end as the orchestra rises to a massive climax, supported by organ and gong. It is a moment of sheer terror, transformed into a still darker terror, as the same two–note motif is repeated in a lower register but still highly dissonant. This is the first 'spiritual' moment of the work, in my opinion: the wrath of God at the warring, sinful nature of Man and the consequences of this, as I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Klimt's Influence On Egon Schiele Egon Schiele, early 20th century artist and apprentice of Gustav Klimt, caused quite a controversy with his risquee nudes unapologetic eroticism. Schiele, though associated with figurative painting, was also considered an early predecessor of the Expressionist movement through his expressive and emotive lines. Schiele's paintings and drawings are far from being simply suggestive, and are rather explicit in their subject matter. His blatant display of sexuality in the majority of his works has consequently made his retrospective iconic, rather than raising only a few specific works to iconic status. Schiele's pieces can often be characterized by its subject matter– models, mainly from lower classes, and those near to him. By considering his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although he acted as protege to Gustav Klimt, a symbolist painter, he himself is characterized in a figurative and early expressionist style. Figurative by definition indicates a work created according to a real source, model or object. While almost all of Schiele's works are modelled after people, they are not entirely realistic; whether that be by definition of colour, line, form or space. Schiele's association with early Expressionism comes through his evident divergence of realism, seen through his starkly contrasted colour palette and distorted, emotional lines (Schmidt 1988). Besides the extremely risquee subject matter for a conservative pre World War I Austria, Schiele experimented with the angles of his pieces. There are a handful of his works featuring more than one model, but the relationship between the models is almost disconnected by a lack of linear perspective (Fischer 2004). In images such as Three Girls (1911) it is unclear whether three separate models are interacting with one another, or rather one model who was drawn three times in different positions and perspectives. Schiele is said to have drawn from atop a ladder to gain a "bird's eye view" per say of his subjects (Fischer 2004). Through this process he could easily gain a sense of the sometimes unnatural contortion of the bodies and adjust them accordingly. A more recognizable work to consider is that of Seated Woman with Bent Knee (1917). While ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Essay about Making the St. Louis Connection Adolf Hitler spent much of his life wanting to be a painter and when he was eighteen years old he fled with two other young men to Vienna. He and the two other men wanted to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. The two other men were accepted but Adolf Hitler was not. He blamed his non–acceptance on the fact that the art academy had been run by the Jewish and were discriminating against him. After years of failing in the art industry, Hitler's political ambitions rose to the surface and he brought the Nazi Party to power in Germany. The Rape of Europa investigates Hitler and other leading advisors, and how they looted numerous of the great museums and private art collections of Europe during the duration of World War II in order to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the museums are brought the paintings Jewish people will try to fight for the painting because it was part of the heritage. Some museums cooperate and others do not and the battle between who the painting belongs to becomes an enormous court battle. The central theme of The Rape of Europa describes the lengths and expenses that a community should go to preserve their art. I believe that communities should go extreme lengths and expenses to preserve their art because art is part of our cultural and if past generations did not preserve their art then future generations would not be able to learn about their cultural, background and heritage. Also, in earlier times art was a way of communication. For instance, cave men and women would draw cave drawings and if scientist did not preserve these drawings then we would not know what life was like back then. The arts are a powerful vehicle for communication, a way to express visions that are beyond the capacity of words and a medium for cultural enlightenment and insight. Art also allows viewers to connect with the art and the artist in a deeper way than life can sometimes express. Communities should go extreme lengths and expenses to preserve their art because it provided a deeper insight to life. One of the most famous pieces of artwork that was purged during World War II by the German Nazis was Klimt's Portrait of Adele Bloch–Bauer. According to Elana Shapira, it was the summer of 1903 that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Essay about Egon Schiele's Self-Portrait Egon Schiele's Self–Portrait When I look at this portrait, the first thing that hits me is the way the artist, Egon Schiele, appears to have made himself look animated, like a cartoon. The way in which his right eye is rounded like a cartoon character and his left eye is squinting and almost shut, adds to the idea of a the portrait being a cartoon. The squinted left eye is as if he is sneaking around and evaluating his surroundings. If you cover the right side of the face (with the widely opened eye), it makes you realise that the left side with the squinted eye does not look very lifelike, but the two eyes seem to cancel each other out. The over exaggerated wrinkles on Schiele's face and neck make him look a lot older than he actually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I have found out that at the time of this painting, Egon Schiele like to give an expression of extreme poverty. But his claims that at this time he was virtually in rags are at odds not only with what his contemporaries have to say, but with the photographs taken of him. His letters make it plain that he suffered from a degree of persecution mania (a feeling that others have evil designs against one's well–being) – for example, he wrote in a letter of 1910: 'How hideous it is here! Everyone envies me and conspires against me. Former colleagues regard me with malevolent eyes.' This information could back up the idea that Schiele was making himself look older in the paintings and look animated because he actually felt old, and the fact that the left eye is squinting as if looking around and being paranoid could also be due to his persecution mania at the time. The portrait is basically just an artist's self–portrait. Around this time, Egon Schiele became fascinated by his own appearance, and made self–portraits in large numbers. This is one of those portraits. The title does not give away any clues to the meaning or symbolism of the piece, it is just called "Self–Portrait Pulling Cheek". One of Schiele's idols was Gustav Klimt, who had previously studied at the same school, the School of Arts and Crafts in Vienna. We cannot really compare any similarities between the two artists styles, but we can maybe say that Schiele was influenced by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
