Autumn Rhythm, By Robert Rauschenberg, And Marilyn Diptych
Abstract Expressionism began in the 1940s and the 1950s in New York after World War II from the
ideas of Surrealism about art that looks to examining the unconscious mind, and the feelings people
hold that makes us all humans. Through the discussion of Autumn Rhythm (Number 30) by Jackson
Pollock, I will define Abstract Expression and why this work is part of this movement. Then,
through the discussion of Canyon by Robert Rauschenberg, Target with Plaster Casts by Jasper
Johns, and Marilyn Diptych by Andy Warhol, I will explain Assemblage and Pop Art and why each
of these works belong to those movements. Autumn Rhythm (Number 30) is Jackson Pollock's most
famous piece that shows action painting, a defining technique of Abstract Expressionism, and his
innovative drip painting technique he developed in 1940. Pollock created his piece by placing the
canvas on the floor, then he used brushes, or even his hands and started to drip the paint on the
surface. His distinct technique of painting makes him absorbed in the creation of his art piece
without being aware of what he is doing. Therefore, Pollock is free from realism and from his own
self through painting because it relieves his anxiety now that he is focused only on his art. Pollock's
work is classified as non–objective because Autumn Rhythm (Number 30) cannot be related to any
recognizable object from real life, so he is not constraint by reality, but goes outside the box as if
liberated to soar free and paint from his

Arthur Miller As A Tragic Hero
Arthur Miller once said, "Theatre is so endlessly fascinating because it's so accidental. It's so much
like life." For years, a playwright's goal was to make the stage a place to cultivate and create life as
it is. The public's thirst for raw, bona fide literature was quenched when Arthur Miller wrote plays
"so much like life" (Miller) itself. He did not find perfection in perfect, but in the imperfect.
Psychology, Art, and History, are not only found within the text, but they are intertwined with every
character's objective and subtext. Arthur Miller is the best playwright, not only for molding a
character's chase for the American Dream, but he has written a revolutionary view on female
characters, and has found the beauty in the tragic hero. Arthur Miller was born on October 17, 1915
in Harlem, New York. When he graduated from the University of Michigan, Arthur Miller went back
east and began his career in playwriting. After The Man Who Has All the Luck, his play with no
success, Arthur Miller finally had a breakthrough with the play, All My Sons. He continued to write
Death of a Salesman, which got him his first Tony for "Best Play" and has won awards for "Best
Revival on the Broadway stage". Death of a Salesman shined a light on the American Dream as a
false myth constructed around materialism. In addition to his other plays, The Crucible became
subject to government criticism because it supposedly was an allegory to McCarthyism. The
government intervened, however

Bowling for Columbine Thesis Statements Essay

Bowling for Columbine Thesis Statements
1) The high casualties caused by guns are a result of how easy it is to obtain one. If policies were
made stricter, casualties would go down.
I do not agree with this because it would only affect the people who go to obtain their guns legally.
If you really wanted one all you would have to do is steal it, so the policies would then have no
effect on you.
2) Minorities and blacks are made to be scarier than they are because they are always the ones
portrayed on TV causing the crimes.
I agree with this statement because when I listen to the news 90% of the time when I heard crimes
talked about they were committed by blacks or Mexicans. Only rarely do I hear of a crime ... Show

6) Charlton Heston does have some contribution to gun violence because even after the tragedies of
Columbine and Buell he held pro gun rallies in those towns, after he was asked to cancel.
I agree with this because it shows that even though he sees how guns have killed people, he is still
pushing for people to purchase them and supporting them fully.
7) Influence for violence is always put on the media and figure heads such as Marilyn Manson but
never on the president.
I agree with that because if you pay attention to society that's how it is. On the day Columbine
occurred the US also dropped the record number of bombs on Kosovo in the war, but when people
go to pinpoint the blame to say why Eric and Dylan shot up Columbine nobody ever blamed it on
the president.
8) Parents don't realize that it's harder for kids in school today than it was when they attended school
back in the day.
I agree with this because there is a lot more bullying in today's day in age than there was way back
when. Also kids take it more personally which messes with their self esteem quite a bit.
9) The US is so gun happy and has as many murders as it does because the media is continuously
pumping fear into us even if it's not true so that they have good stories to tell.
I agree with this because it has happened many times before. For example the Y2K bug which was
supposed to cause mass chaos with our computer systems never happened and the African

The Marilyn Diptych Essay
The Marilyn Diptych The Marilyn Diptych is a very famous work of art by Andy Warhol. The
Marilyn Diptych was made in 1962, immediately after the actress's death, of oil, acrylic, and
silkscreen on enamel canvas. Although it looks like this piece is all cohesive, it is made of two
separate panels, each being 6'–10"x 4'–9". Warhol used the method of printing from a silkscreen
from a photograph of Monroe because it is easy to mass produce the fifty different versions of her
face. The Marilyn Diptych (Figure 1) by Andy Warhol appears to be depthless, plain, and uses
thoughtless repetition but there is a lot of hidden meaning and thought behind this work of art. Andy
Warhol was born on August 6, 1928, and was the youngest of three boys. His interest in art started
when he was taking free art classes at Carnegie Institute, which is now the Carnegie Museum of Art,
and when he was about nine years old he got his first camera and learned how to develop his photos
all by himself in his basement. When he got older he decided to go to ... Show more content on

The Marilyn Diptych is a very famous work of art by Andy Warhol that was made from a very
complicated process called silkscreen printing on an enamel canvas. This work of art appears to be
depthless, plain, and uses thoughtless repetition but there is much more to it than that. The repetition
was done on purpose so that the audience would examine the work of art as a whole. Warhol
intended for the repetition to represent a film strip because of Marilyn's movies, he wanted to make
a statement about the worlds current obsession with television and the affects it has had on the
world. Warhol intentionally made it look depthless to make her signature features as a sex symbol to

Essay on Marilyn Monroe and Borderline Personality Disorder
Marilyn Monroe is a well–known legend and has been a public figure for several decades. Monroe
was a distinguished model, actress, and singer, who quickly became known as a major sex symbol.
Monroe starred in a large number of successful motion pictures during the late 1940s and early
1960s. She began her career as a model, which led to a film contract in 1946. Throughout her career,
Monroe's films grossed more than $200 million ("Marilyn Monroe Biography," 2013). Marilyn
Monroe swiftly became more known to the public for her behavior and outlandish actions; she was
eventually diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder.
Background History Marilyn Monroe was born on June 1, 1926 in Los Angeles, California. Monroe
was originally given ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She was also often anxious and had moderate colds and coughs. Marilyn Monroe spent the majority
of her early years living in a fictional world she created as an escape from reality. She sometimes
told the other children in her orphanage eccentric tales about her having loving parents who had just
went on a trip. Monroe would create fake postcards, she would sign from her parents to go along
with her story (Spoto, 1993, p. 47). She had also managed to convince herself that Clark Gable was
her father, although it was not a possibility (Spoto, 1993, p. 45; 54). After growing up in orphanages,
Marilyn realized the only way to be released from the foster system was to get married. Marilyn
Monroe decided to drop out of high school and marry her boyfriend at the time. Her first husband
was a merchant marine by the name James Dougherty (Hendrickson, 2000). Dougherty was much
older than Monroe who was then only sixteen years old. Although like the marriages to her other
two husbands, Joe DeMaggio and Arthur Miller did not last for various reasons.
Factors Contributing to Mental Illness One can point out many factors could have led or contributed
to Marilyn Monroe being diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. As stated in her back
ground history she had many stressful events throughout her childhood and adult life. Monroe's
childhood was filled with poverty. The simple fact of Monroe's mother being diagnosed with a
mental illness posed a greater treat of her

Women : The Impacts Of The Roaring Twenties
The 1920's which was also called the Roaring Twenties was a era of economic prosperity and
dramatic social change. The 19 amendment that was ratified on August 1920 gave the right of
women to vote and the impact of World War I resulted in women questioning traditional morals and
values, becoming rebellious. When men left for the war it caused women to have new jobs such as
working in factories. Also, "the number of women attending college rose to 10% of the population
by the end of the 1920's." Due to women having the opportunity to have jobs and go to college
women became more mobile. The corset limited women to be mobile in this era which caused the
production of coresets to quickly decline. Less women wearing corset made their figure to be more
boyish and straight. The women of this era was called the Flappers, free spirited women,
representing the new change of how women looked. The Flappers "lacked hips, breasts, and a
defined waist". They would dress in dresses above their knee and ankle showing more legs and
having bare arms. They would also stray away from having long hair and cut their hair into a bob to
symbolize freedom and independency. As a reason of women questioning traditional values they
began to drink, smoke and be more sexual in this era. The 1920's was also the age of Jazz which
influenced women to go out and dance and women having more flamboyant and exuberant moves.
In the 1920's to be equal among men they had to have a figure of men,

Comparison Of Marilyn Monroe And Audrey Hepburn
Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, two of the most iconic women from the entertainment
industry in the 1950's, have been able to stay relevant for decades. Despite the fact that these two
women looked and acted completely different, their road to success was very similar. After
everything they went through from their rough childhood, modeling to film careers, rocky
relationships, miscarriages, and career achievements they managed to become two of the most
famous actresses and paved the road for other women who were inspired by them.
On June 1st, 1926 Norma Jean Mortenson was born in Los Angeles. Norma would eventually
change her name to Marilyn Monroe in the year 1946. Marilyn's mother Gladys Pearl Baker decided
to give her daughter to a foster family due to many health and financial issues. Marilyn's father was
absent and she never knew who he was. Gladys visited Marilyn often and eventually took her back
in 1933 even though Marilyn's foster parents had a desire to adopt her. After several months with
Marilyn, Gladys was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and was committed into a hospital.
Gladys never recovered and stayed in and out of hospitals the remainder of her life. For the next
several years Marilyn lived with many foster families. During this time Marilyn was sexually
abused and became very shy. She spent some time in an orphanage and the staff urged Gladys'
friend Grace McKee Goddard to take her in. Grace became her legal guardian in 1936 and took her

Nineteen Fifties Research Paper
Life in the Nineteen Fifties Throughout a period of time things begin to change, rather it is for the
better or for the worse. Our country has definitely changed for the better. As time passes things like
the way we dress, the features on a car, or even things like the price of a carton of milk change.
America has changed in many forms throughout the years, rather it be our advancements in
technology, our rules, or the way we act as people. We as Americans tend to always take what we
already had and grow off of it, we are always advancing what we have. A time period of major
changes occurred in the nineteen fifties, where things began to change for the better. In the nineteen

In the movie, the majority of the characters are teenagers in high school; teenagers were the driving
force behind fashion during the nineteen fifties. As well as, the way teenagers and young women
dressed was influenced by the rock n roll craze. Today, our fashion sense is way different than it was
during that time period; however, our fashion would not be the way it is today if it was not for the
trends that were popular throughout the fifties. In several ways, the nineteen fifties took a turn in the
fashion industry, especially for the woman. Before, while the men were away fighting in World War
II, women were sent to fill their spots in the factories. At this point in time the way women dressed
was heavily restricted to where they must wear certain things, rather it be the length of their skirts to
the size of their collars; however, as women continued to work throughout the nineteen fifties, they
began to dress how they felt and dress more comfortable. Some popular fashion trends during the
nineteen fifties were poodle skirts for teenagers, slim pencil–line skirts for women, and saddle
shoes. Stiletto–heeled shoes also emerged in the early nineteen fifties and there were a variety of
different colors so you could get the pair that match your shoes to your outfit. Women such as
Audrey Hepburn helped inspire the casual look, and Marilyn Monroe inspired tiny waistlines, full
skirts, and busts. On a different note, fashion for men during the nineteen fifties was very quiet and
conservative. Men mostly wore plain fabrics in dark, like blue, brown, and grey. People were
beginning to feel more freedom in the way that they dressed, their rules were no longer as strict as
they had been in the past and they could do what they want; if they wanted to wear a dress that day
they could, as well as they could wear a skirt, or even pants. People no

Conte Poem Analysis Essay
Lenae Gomez
ENG 110.3
Professor Unger
February 11, 2013
Au Contraire In "Conte" by Marilyn Hacker, Cinderella shows the reader a glimpse of her life after
the childhood tale ends, a less happier ending than the original story implies. She feels trapped in a
constant state of misery and boredom in the royal palace. Without life experience guiding her,
Cinderella is in a dilemma caused by her ignorance of the potential consequences of her actions.
With the use of irony, structure, and diction, "Conte" shows how innocence and naïveté result in
regrettable mistakes that create life experience. The poem deviates from the basic fairy tale through
the use of ironic predicaments. Cinderella makes a bold statement from the beginning: ... Show

The poem is in free verse with no meter and consists of twenty–eight lines in one big stanza. The
poem has all the elements of a letter with the most conclusive evidence being at the end of the
poem: "Yours, C" (28). A letter is a personal form of writing and gives the reader an inside
perspective into Cinderella's palace life. Most of the sentences are declarative sentences, making the
exceptions more obvious in the poem. One of the exceptions is found on lines 17 and 18, where the
sentence ends in an exclamation point: "Why not throw it all up, live on the coast / and fish, no, no,
impossible with wives!" The exclamation point emphasizes the idea that she feels trapped in her
situation as a wife. She wants to find a way out of her misery. On lines 20 and 21 there is a question
mark on each line: "or cut my hair, teach (what?) little girls / and live at home with you?" Cinderella
reiterates that her options are limited because of her minimal experience in the world. "Conte" uses a
couple parentheses within mid–sentence. Cinderella uses the parentheses to convey deeper
explanation of her thoughts. For example, Cinderella writes, "Ladies / ignore me, or tell me all their
petty secrets / (petty because they can't attend meetings) / about this man or that" (4–7). She does
not censor her meaning of petty. Her true feelings show in the letter and validate the rough situation
that Cinderella is stuck in. At the end, Cinderella asks her

The Conceptual Schema Of Women
Women are seen powerless in many instances and Marilyn Frye details the accounts where women
are viewed as second to men in "To see and Be Seen." Frye uses a metaphysics approach to better
understand how people come to power. She gives a metaphysical understanding of how the world
has been determined by people of power, which throughout history has been men. Men have been in
authority throughout history and have come up with society's conceptual schema. Frye alludes to
people in power don't want to see people who are submissive. Men fit into the conceptual schema,
women are excluded but are allowed in the schema in certain ways and lesbians are not included.
Lesbians are seen as unnatural and are not recognized in the schema. Their perspective on society is
not taken into account, whereas women are recognized but their own perspective on society is
completely erased.
Men in charge do not identify women or lesbian's experiences and view women as a mystery. The
conceptual schema lead women to view society as men do, but lesbians do not view the world
through men's perspective. Suppressing a groups perspective excluded them from reality. Men are
dominant and women are dominated. Frye mentions Sarah Hoagland's paper saying, "In the
conceptual schemes of phallocracies... there is no such thing as a lesbian. This puts a lesbian in the
interesting and peculiar position of being something that does not exist, and this position is a
singular vantage point with respect to the

Promoting Gun Control in Bowling For Columbine Essay
The Techniques of Michael Moore in Bowling For Columbine to Present the Message on Gun
Control
Michael Moore has used several successful techniques in Bowling For Columbine to present a
provocative message on gun control in America. These techniques are composed of visuals, sounds,
editing, interviews, political messages and many more.
Camera work is used in a manipulative way in Bowling for Columbine. There is a purpose for every
camera angle used in the documentary. For example, a close up shot is taken in an emotional scene,
as it would enlarge characters' facial expressions, which then would stir stronger feelings intended
for the audience. This can be seen in the scene wherein Michael ... Show more content on

He would go off showing a typical scene and afterwards, the scene that comes out is entirely
contradicting the previous one. This method of paradox causes a larger impact towards the audience.
An example of this is the irony between the scene where the spokesman for Lockheed Martin in an
interview states "The missiles that you're talking about were built and designed to defend us from
somebody else who would be aggressors against us. Societies and countries and governments do
things that annoy one another but we have to learn to deal with that annoyance or anger or
frustration in appropriate ways. We don't get irritated with somebody and just cuz we're mad at em,
uh, drop a bomb or shoot at em – or fire a missile at em" and what comes right after it when Moore
immediately fades into this brief scene as if to say "Oh really??" and proving quite the opposite with
persuasive success in the following scene illustrating the aforementioned What a Wonderful World
montage.
Often times the music that is played in the background clashes with the visuals shown on screen.
There is juxtaposition between the serious images or visuals and the harmonious melody. The irony
makes the audience feel disturbed in what they are seeing quite unparallel to what they are hearing
hence leaving a greater impression in their minds. There is more to reality than just ecstasy. An

Death Of The Death Icon
It is sad to think that the first few people on earth needed no books, movies, games or music to
inspire cold–blooded murder. The day that Cain bashed his brother Abel's brains in, the only
motivation he needed was his own human disposition to violence. Whether you interpret the Bible
as literature or as the final word of whatever God may be, Christianity has given us an image of
death and sexuality that we have based our culture around. A half–naked dead man hangs in most
homes and around our necks, and we have just taken that for granted all our lives. Is it a symbol of
hope or hopelessness? The world's most famous murder–suicide was also the birth of the death icon
– the blueprint for celebrity. Unfortunately, for all their inspiring ... Show more content on

Times have not become more violent. They have just become more televised. Does anyone think the

there to cover it, or maybe even participate in it, like their violent car chase of Princess Di.
Disgusting g vultures looking for corpses, exploiting, fucking, filming and serving it up for our
hungry appetites in a gluttonous display of endless human stupidity. When it comes down to who's
to blame for the high school murders in Little, Colorado throw a rock and you'll hit someone who's
guilty. We're the people who sit back and tolerate children owning guns, and we're the ones who
tune in and watch the up to the minute details of what they do with them. I think it's terrible when
anyone dies, especially if it is someone you know and love. But what is more offensive is that when
these tragedies happen most people don't really any more than they Would about the season finale o
dancing with the Stars. I was dumbfounded as I watched the media snake right in, not missing a

Analysis Of Marilyn Diptych By Andy Warhol
Introduction
The following essay will be analysing the artwork Marilyn Diptych by Andy Warhol which is an
acrylic on canvas, silkscreen print. The artwork measures 2054 x 1448 x 20mm and the artwork was
painted in the year 1962. The analysis will be done by discussing the following in detail: the formal
elements, the size, materials and techniques used, line, shape/form, colour, tone as well as the
function and meaning of the piece. The analysis will also cover the historical significance of the
piece with the connotative meaning but mainly focussing on the denotative meaning of Marilyn
Diptych by Andy Warhol.
Historical background
Andy Warhol's Marilyn Diptych is made of two silver canvases on which Warhol silkscreened a
famous photograph of Marilyn Monroe fifty times, as seen in figure 1. In an analytical article on

paint from passing through the canvas. In an interview Warhol said, "In August 62 I started doing

##hol's Meaning Of Barbiturach, 1962 By Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol's work, Marilyn Diptych, 1962 is a depiction of an image of Marilyn Monroe who was
a famous actress as well as a sex symbol but had a 'dark' ending, dying of barbiturate overdose. In
this work, Warhol captures both the life and tragic death of the superstar by recreating a publicity
photo of her. In the painting, the actress's face is portrayed fifty times, twenty–five times in color on
the right and the same number of times in black and white on the left. One way to understand how
this specific work should be interpreted is by examining it as an expressionist theorist. To
experience this work properly I will act as an expressionist theorist and make sure to recognize my
feelings transmitted as I interpret the work, be aware of how it expresses emotion, and grasp the
uniqueness of the work.
As an expressionist theorist, I recognize that the use of color can express the artist's emotion. Warhol
used a warm color mix of bright yellow, orange, and turquoise on the right section and a dull color
mix of black and white tints on the left. By using mixed media that represents a slow–fade of the
photos towards the end, Warhol captures life's transition from the bright and youthful days when one
is full of energy to the tragic halt caused by death, which is also signified by the dull colors. Here,
the artist provides a form of experience of life and death that the viewer can relate to. The use of
acrylic on canvas and screen painting shows a transition in life from the

The Paradoxes Of Gender, By Judith Lorber
Judith Lorber's idea of gender meaning both sameness and difference is the key concept in Night to

goal in this piece is to show how gender is socially constructed. She does this by stating the many
components of gender within society that could be perpetrated either as a social institution
(sameness) or what gender is composed of at an individual level (difference). This paper will use
examples from Marilyn Monroe's The Seven Year Itch to demonstrate these components of gender.

In this scene, Richard's wife explains to their son that his father couldn't leave on vacation with them
because he had to stay home to make the money. This shows that families, at least at New York atn
this time, were almost totally dependent on the husbands income. That isn't to say that there were no
women working in the city at this time, but in multiple scenes it is clear that the women that stayed
to work didn't have families, meaning they had to support themselves, and had jobs that were less
corporate or hands on.
Marilyn Monroe's character was an of one of these women. She is unmarried and mentions no
family throughout the movie. She stays in New York working as a model and actress and makes just
enough to get by. Even though she is not married to Richard, she still shows a sort of dependence to
him, like when she asks to stay the night for his air conditioning, which begins to show an example
of gendered personalities, or females depending on the males in their lives. Another example of the
division of labor would be Richard's secretary. Although her role is quite minor and it is never
explicitly stated, it can assumed that she is not married through Richard's daydreams about her. She
works in an office doing whatever Richard, her boss who 's a male, tells her to do, even though he
treats her poorly.

Essay on Journey Into the Mind of Marilyn Monroe
Watching Marilyn Monroe as she moves across the large silver screen with her signature sensual
grace in the 1961 film The Misfits, it is hard to believe that by this point in her career, she had lost
virtually all sway over her impulsivity. Her day to day existence had become a series of endless
crises that grew more frantic and destructive. She was in a desperate and losing struggle within
herself. In retrospect, the wrenching dilemmas she faced off the set gave her portrayal of Roslyn a
surreal if not convincing quality that provoked familiar feelings of pity, tenderness, and compassion.

Yet, because of self–doubt, she continued to set the bar ever higher, testing to see if the admiration
was for her as the fragile person she was or for the salacious roles she played in movies such as
Some like it Hot. How could she ever be convinced?
This was the tragedy of Marilyn Monroe. In her comedic films, one has a sense of impending
disaster. It seems to skulk in the background even as she portrayed the innocent and naive pubescent
juvenile. Then, in her dramatic efforts, there was the comedy of her feeble attempts to transcend her
destiny by pretending that others could save her from herself. The comedy–drama genre was her
forte because it was the essence of who she was. It is the essential nature of her mental illness.

It is hard for a person to stay quiet when everyone knows your name, for Marilyn Monroe this was
the case; Monroe was everyone's new trend. Since her first breath Monroe was destined to have
fame and fortune, just from her looks. Life carried on for her in a less luxurious way then expected,
her story is essentially a reflection of Cinderella. As connections formed at a young age and talent
was already recognized, life kicked in like a rocket for Monroe from the moment she was born.
Doors of opportunity were constantly being opened for her. Singing Happy Birthday for JFK, and
being Hugh Hefner's first model are only things that Monroe can be responsible for (Jackson,
Denny). Marilyn Monroe's career may seem as if she made it all by herself; instead, she already had
strong connections to Hollywood through her mother's career, and the Kennedy's family name.
The iconic sex symbol of the 50's has history unlike any other Hollywood superstar. Marilyn
Monroe was born into an unstable family, and soon later given up for adoption. However, two points
don't add up. Her mother Gladys Pearl Baker was involved in the film industry during her pregnancy
with Monroe (Jackson, Denny). Why would a film star abandoned her soon to be superstar
daughter? The un–luxurious life of Norma Jeane Baker, a.k.a Marilyn Monroe, took place in foster
homes and oddly old "parents". Monroe was unclear that connections through Hollywood were
brewing as

Why Is Marilyn Monroe A Mystery
Red lipstick. Bombshell blonde hair. Holding down a white dress. Iconic. Marilyn Monroe was icon
known by people all over the world. She was widely known for her iconic picture of her holding
down the front of her white dress when the wind blew up the grate. She quickly became the sex
symbol of the 60's. But her death is still a mystery. The mystery of Marilyn Monroe is surrounded
by two theories: the Kennedy family had her killed or she died of a suicidal drug overdose.
Marilyn Monroe was an internationally known actress and star whose actions and whereabouts were
always known, but the death of the star is still a mystery. Even the time of her death is unknown.
There is no solid evidence what time she died. At 11 p.m August 4, Monroe was supposedly found
dead by her publicist Arthur Jacobs. But Marilyn's doctor wasn't called to the house until 3:40 a.m,
10 minutes after she was discovered at 3:30 a.m by her housekeeper (Newton 245). When the found
Monroe she was "lying face down, naked on her bed with her phone in her hand" ("Marilyn Monroe
is Found Dead"). Although it is not known what she talked about over the phone, it is known that ...

amount of sedatives were in her system ("Marilyn Monroe"). Some of those sedatives being chloral

Marilyn had "overdosed on multiple occasions before and had to be resuscitated a few times" ("The

Theme Of Death In Elvis Presley's 'Marilyn Diptych'
Having began my career in the realm of commercial art, I draw great inspiration from the world of
advertising and our consumerist society. My works can be seen as aesthetically pleasing pictures on
the walls of this gallery, but they represent far more. They address the influence of advertising, the
nature of celebrity life and the significance of death in the legacy of a celebrity.
As an artist I find interest in contrasting themes of life, fame, wealth and success to themes of death
and disaster. I guess my work Marilyn Diptych encapsulates all I hope to achieve in my art. I have
tried to visually represent the contrast between her bright and exciting celebrity life, to the dark and
fading reality of her death by suicide. Her long history of depression was hidden behind a facade of
radiance and luxury. This work juxtaposes two of my main themes – cult of the celebrity and death.

Why Did Andy Warhol Choose To Use Famous People To...
Why did Andy Warhol choose to use famous people to represent pop–art? Warhol used his process
throughout the 1960s to reproduce multiple portraits of celebrities, including Marilyn Diptych,
Michael Jackson , Elizabeth TaylorV and Mao. Andy Warhol duplicated images of mass–produced
commercial prints, using famous people, suggesting that the media marketed celebrities just like
products. Warhol, was fascinated with the rich and famous since his childhood. Marilyn Diptych, by
Andy Warhol in 1962, it is made in a process called silkscreen. Its dimensions are 80.88 in ×114.00
in. Marilyn Diptych painting by Warhol was created as a tribute to the legendary Hollywood actress
Marilyn Monroe who had died just weeks earlier. It contains fifty images of the actress, which are
all based on a single publicity photograph from the 1953 film Niagara, in which Marilyn starred.
The twenty–five pictures on the left side of the diptych are vibrantly colored while the twenty–five
on the right are made in black and white evoking the relation between the celebrity's life and death.
Andy Warhol was an award–winning illustrator, instead of making his own drawing of Marilyn
Monroe, he appropriates an image that already exists. Furthermore, the image is not some other
artist's drawing, but a photograph made for mass reproduction, a publicity photo for Monroe's 1953
film Niagara. Marilyn Diptych was bought by Tate in London in 1980 and it's still part of the

The Depiction Of Strong Women On The Film ' Waiting For...
The depiction of strong women in leading roles is fairly uncommon because of unrealistic, universal
ideas of how women should be. Throughout the years, there have been a few strong female roles,
but not enough. In Frank Bruni's article, "Waiting for Wonder Woman", he declares that there aren't
enough movies with strong female characters. Bruni starts off with, "Maybe because I have seven
nieces whose dreams matter to me, maybe because I have so many female friends whose talents
dazzle me." He goes into how he has plenty of women around him that he knows have strong
passions and dreams. He believes that movies should be more equal. There should be women that
are saving citizens or the world, or at least doing something heroic, not just men. The appearance of
strong women are missing in popular movies and shows.. The world wants this "equality", yet what
everyone watches on the TV is the complete opposite.
Many women roles in movies consist of being feminine, girly, unintelligent, silly, and/or "princess–
like." There are plenty of different actresses that have only ever played these so–called "dumb" roles
such as Marilyn Monroe. In the 1950's, Marilyn Monroe portrayed a beautiful "dumb blonde" that
preferred her looks more than brains, in two separate films. Monroe played these roles because she
looked the part. She was a beautiful woman that kept her hair blonde. Back then, she was all the
directors had for an actress that didn't have to physically change to play a part.

Impact Of Consumer Culture In The 1950s
During the 1950's art took a major turn in history from traditional styles depicting people and scenes
of everyday life to abstract thoughts and ideas that were transformed onto a canvas to express
emotions and ideals in society. People, events, and society have always impacted several styles of
art, but the consumer culture in the 1950's impacted art in a new completely unique way. Post WWII
society was more industrialized and more focused on developing and selling new products. The
postwar generation had more disposable income to spend on the latest and greatest products and the
market turned to advertisements in mass media to get their products out there to consumers. With
televisions and films increasing in popularity the market flooded these forms of media with catchy
flashy ads that showed favorable people like movie stars using products. With the increasing use of
mass media, the culture shifted to consumerism which effectively shifted art as well. Art was
directly impacted by the consumer culture because of society's use of advertisements, photographs,
and films which artists like Richard Hamilton and Andy Warhol used those elements in their own
works to portray the change of societal standards in a new modern style of art called pop art.
During the 1950's in people were concerned with the idea of consumerism which meant that society
was constantly looking for the next best product to come on the market. This idea comes from
people who are constantly buying more and

Marilyn Monroe 's Fight Against Mental Disorder
Marilyn Monroe's Fight Against a Mental Disorder One of the most famous and iconic women in
history, known by the name of Marilyn Monroe, lived a life of a star in the views of thousands of
fans. From her beauty to her beautiful, bubbly personality, and the fame she acquired through
movies and photographs might be the world to many, but for Marilyn it was worthless. Her exterior
expressed happiness and pure bliss in front of the cameras, but nobody seem to pay attention to what
was going on in her head much less her mental wellbeing. Her mental problems escalated with time
and lead to her untimely death at the age of thirty–six (Bingaman, 2012). The news of her death
shocked many, but more over the fact that she killed herself with an overdose ("A psychological",
2014). During this time, therapeutic interventions used during her time were ill–conceived and
implemented, which in a different setting could have possibly saved her life (Doll, 2007). After her
death, information about her early life gave a sign that Marilyn Monroe had a predisposition to a
mental disorder, which only worsen over time expressed in her inability to have a normal–stable life.
Marilyn Monroe was born as Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926, by her mother Gladys Pearl

Looking at Hugh Hefner's Portrait from Various Lenses Essays
Cynthia Freeland argued that art communicates significance but there is no one precise hypothetical
approach that tells us how to best interpret a work of art. Although there are better interpretations of
a piece artwork than others, there is no one–way to interpret a single piece of art. The best
interpretations understand the background of the artist while also focusing on the style that the artist
uses. The emotions and ideas that come from looking at a piece of art work can come from the
artist's perspective of that of the viewer. When understanding the expressionist theory we can look to
Freeland's definition: "expression theory holds that art communicates something in the realm of
feelings and emotions" (Freeland, 155). In a broader ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The different expressions all give the same underlying look of envy. The girl sitting on the ottoman
is glaring at the other girls while the two girls on the bed are engaging in conversation while
showing wariness. The woman on the floor is looking longingly at the camera as if she wants to say
something but you do not know what. Tolstoy's belief of "an artist's chief job is to express and
communicate emotions to an audience" (Freeland, 155) is conveyed when you initially look at the
Hugh Hefner portrait. Every viewer has their own interpretation, but most would argue that when
you look at this portrait you are able to see different expressions on the five characters faces–
impacting the viewer with the same experience that Shay got when photographing this image.
Tolstoy and Freud both understand that art can communicate emotions and feelings, while Tolstoy
believes that art communicates conscious emotions and feelings, Freud believes that art
communicates unconscious emotions and feelings.
Interpretations are very diverse and come from all different areas and when we view Hugh Hefner,
photographed by Art Shay, through Freud's perspective, we are filled with emotions that are taken
from past experiences. Freud believed that when we look at a portrait or another art form, it ignites
"unconscious feelings–ones the artist [or the viewer] might not even admit to having" (Freeland,
157). When looking at Hugh Hefner in Freud's lenses, the different viewers

Arthur Miller Essay Writing
Arthur Miller was best known for his play that he wrote which made it to Broadway, but his other
works may have been some of the most electrifying stories from this era. Arthur Miller was born in
Harlem, New York on October 17th, 1915. His family lost nearly everything they had in the stock
market crash of 1929, however Arthur Miller attended the University of Michigan to study
journalism in 1929 ("Arthur Miller" 1). While he attended Michigan, he was the night editor of the
student paper, the "Michigan Daily". Arthur Miller is best known for writing radio plays,
screenplays, short stories, and novels (1). While in college, Miller won several awards including the
"Avery Hopwood Award" for the first play he wrote, No Villain. After college, Arthur Miller moved
back home to begin his career in playwriting. Arthur Miller's writings defied his readers by being
fearless in his stories that he wrote. Miller worked very hard to get the best information for his
stories. One example was The Crucible, this was about Joe McCarthy and his communist hunts (1).
Miller wrote about this and got down to the last detail. Miller was even blacklisted, which prevented
him from working in theaters and for movie companies, this was soon reversed however, as it was
unnecessary (3).
One way in which Arthur Miller influenced other writers in his era was by pushing the limits for
awards and best stories. His play Death of a Salesman was a hit in 1947 and pushed Broadway plays
to beat his works.

The investigation went on for three months and one would think that after a thorough three month
investigation that trained investigators would find evidence to support the fact that Monroe was
murdered. However, they did not find any evidence because there was no credible evidence to
support the fact that she was murdered. Although, there was plenty of evidence found by
investigators to display that she died of an overdose. Including her autopsy, this displayed no signs
of foul play but an abundant amount of drugs. If she was murdered, there would obviously be signs
of foul play. Lastly, it is important to note that Marilyn had a drug addiction, and this was not the
only time she had tried drugs. Since she had heavily relied on pills in her daily life to just function
normally and maintain the image that she was still rather normally, she became heavily dependent
on those pills, which inevitably lead to an addiction. The pills Monroe was addicted to were used to
control her behavior, which leads to the assumption that she was plagued with mental issues, and it
is not uncommon for someone with a mental disorder to want to end their life. Therefore, it is
evident that there is credible evidence to support the fact that Monroe died from an overdose

Essay on The Ideology of Media Blame
The Ideology of Media Blame For generations the media has been unfairly seen as the catalyst of
violence and crime with in society. The Media, particularly television and film have been blamed for
many atrocities over the years; some of these can be indirectly related to the media's involvement on
people's lives. But some cannot. As a Media and Psychology student I have different views on the
debate of media blame. As a psychologist I can understand the connection with the media and
violence, i.e. violence is a behaviour, which in theory, is learnt and repeated on another. Therefore
this behaviour must derive from a source. Which it can be argued, could be a media text. But as a

This is an electronic device fitted within a television, which allows the operator to block out
programmes, defined as violent or sexual explicit. This in turn has raised a lot of questions about
cultural competency. In order to understand the issues surrounding cultural competency first we
must define it. The French Sociologist Pierre Bourdieu penned the theory that social class and
gender carry with them different cultural competencies. And these affect the ease of understanding
and hence the enjoyment of different media and art forms. Therefore it follows that some media
formats may exclude sections of society who do not possess those required competences. The 'v'

defines as violent or sexual explicit. Consequently it could be argued that violence or sex may be
needed in order to get a certain agenda across to the audience. For example the violence seen within
Quentin Tarantino's 'Reservoir Dogs' can be accepted and justified because it is shown to be painful
and in a suitable context to the plot and the characters. As a result with out the violent climax to the

look up to for his lyrics and deep meanings behind his persona, but some people take his antichrist
persona too seriously and go down a dark path. April 20, 1999 is a perfect example of the media
glorifying Manson's persona. At approximately 11:10 a.m. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold got out of
their cars outside of Columbine High School (history.com, 2009). No one could have guessed what
was going to happen within the next thirty

Autumn Rhythm, By Robert Rauschenberg, And Marilyn Diptych

  • 1. Autumn Rhythm, By Robert Rauschenberg, And Marilyn Diptych Abstract Expressionism began in the 1940s and the 1950s in New York after World War II from the ideas of Surrealism about art that looks to examining the unconscious mind, and the feelings people hold that makes us all humans. Through the discussion of Autumn Rhythm (Number 30) by Jackson Pollock, I will define Abstract Expression and why this work is part of this movement. Then, through the discussion of Canyon by Robert Rauschenberg, Target with Plaster Casts by Jasper Johns, and Marilyn Diptych by Andy Warhol, I will explain Assemblage and Pop Art and why each of these works belong to those movements. Autumn Rhythm (Number 30) is Jackson Pollock's most famous piece that shows action painting, a defining technique of Abstract Expressionism, and his innovative drip painting technique he developed in 1940. Pollock created his piece by placing the canvas on the floor, then he used brushes, or even his hands and started to drip the paint on the surface. His distinct technique of painting makes him absorbed in the creation of his art piece without being aware of what he is doing. Therefore, Pollock is free from realism and from his own self through painting because it relieves his anxiety now that he is focused only on his art. Pollock's work is classified as non–objective because Autumn Rhythm (Number 30) cannot be related to any recognizable object from real life, so he is not constraint by reality, but goes outside the box as if liberated to soar free and paint from his ... • 3. Arthur Miller As A Tragic Hero Arthur Miller once said, "Theatre is so endlessly fascinating because it's so accidental. It's so much like life." For years, a playwright's goal was to make the stage a place to cultivate and create life as it is. The public's thirst for raw, bona fide literature was quenched when Arthur Miller wrote plays "so much like life" (Miller) itself. He did not find perfection in perfect, but in the imperfect. Psychology, Art, and History, are not only found within the text, but they are intertwined with every character's objective and subtext. Arthur Miller is the best playwright, not only for molding a character's chase for the American Dream, but he has written a revolutionary view on female characters, and has found the beauty in the tragic hero. Arthur Miller was born on October 17, 1915 in Harlem, New York. When he graduated from the University of Michigan, Arthur Miller went back east and began his career in playwriting. After The Man Who Has All the Luck, his play with no success, Arthur Miller finally had a breakthrough with the play, All My Sons. He continued to write Death of a Salesman, which got him his first Tony for "Best Play" and has won awards for "Best Revival on the Broadway stage". Death of a Salesman shined a light on the American Dream as a false myth constructed around materialism. In addition to his other plays, The Crucible became subject to government criticism because it supposedly was an allegory to McCarthyism. The government intervened, however ... • 5. Bowling for Columbine Thesis Statements Essay October 17, 2010 Bowling for Columbine Thesis Statements 1) The high casualties caused by guns are a result of how easy it is to obtain one. If policies were made stricter, casualties would go down. I do not agree with this because it would only affect the people who go to obtain their guns legally. If you really wanted one all you would have to do is steal it, so the policies would then have no effect on you. 2) Minorities and blacks are made to be scarier than they are because they are always the ones portrayed on TV causing the crimes. I agree with this statement because when I listen to the news 90% of the time when I heard crimes talked about they were committed by blacks or Mexicans. Only rarely do I hear of a crime ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 6) Charlton Heston does have some contribution to gun violence because even after the tragedies of Columbine and Buell he held pro gun rallies in those towns, after he was asked to cancel. I agree with this because it shows that even though he sees how guns have killed people, he is still pushing for people to purchase them and supporting them fully. 7) Influence for violence is always put on the media and figure heads such as Marilyn Manson but never on the president. I agree with that because if you pay attention to society that's how it is. On the day Columbine occurred the US also dropped the record number of bombs on Kosovo in the war, but when people go to pinpoint the blame to say why Eric and Dylan shot up Columbine nobody ever blamed it on the president. 8) Parents don't realize that it's harder for kids in school today than it was when they attended school back in the day. I agree with this because there is a lot more bullying in today's day in age than there was way back when. Also kids take it more personally which messes with their self esteem quite a bit.
  • 6. 9) The US is so gun happy and has as many murders as it does because the media is continuously pumping fear into us even if it's not true so that they have good stories to tell. I agree with this because it has happened many times before. For example the Y2K bug which was supposed to cause mass chaos with our computer systems never happened and the African ... • 8. The Marilyn Diptych Essay The Marilyn Diptych The Marilyn Diptych is a very famous work of art by Andy Warhol. The Marilyn Diptych was made in 1962, immediately after the actress's death, of oil, acrylic, and silkscreen on enamel canvas. Although it looks like this piece is all cohesive, it is made of two separate panels, each being 6'–10"x 4'–9". Warhol used the method of printing from a silkscreen from a photograph of Monroe because it is easy to mass produce the fifty different versions of her face. The Marilyn Diptych (Figure 1) by Andy Warhol appears to be depthless, plain, and uses thoughtless repetition but there is a lot of hidden meaning and thought behind this work of art. Andy Warhol was born on August 6, 1928, and was the youngest of three boys. His interest in art started when he was taking free art classes at Carnegie Institute, which is now the Carnegie Museum of Art, and when he was about nine years old he got his first camera and learned how to develop his photos all by himself in his basement. When he got older he decided to go to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Marilyn Diptych is a very famous work of art by Andy Warhol that was made from a very complicated process called silkscreen printing on an enamel canvas. This work of art appears to be depthless, plain, and uses thoughtless repetition but there is much more to it than that. The repetition was done on purpose so that the audience would examine the work of art as a whole. Warhol intended for the repetition to represent a film strip because of Marilyn's movies, he wanted to make a statement about the worlds current obsession with television and the affects it has had on the world. Warhol intentionally made it look depthless to make her signature features as a sex symbol to stand out. The colored and black and white sides individually hold a lot of symbolism and meaning, but also work together to make a bold statement about pop culture and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Essay on Marilyn Monroe and Borderline Personality Disorder Marilyn Monroe is a well–known legend and has been a public figure for several decades. Monroe was a distinguished model, actress, and singer, who quickly became known as a major sex symbol. Monroe starred in a large number of successful motion pictures during the late 1940s and early 1960s. She began her career as a model, which led to a film contract in 1946. Throughout her career, Monroe's films grossed more than $200 million ("Marilyn Monroe Biography," 2013). Marilyn Monroe swiftly became more known to the public for her behavior and outlandish actions; she was eventually diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. Background History Marilyn Monroe was born on June 1, 1926 in Los Angeles, California. Monroe was originally given ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She was also often anxious and had moderate colds and coughs. Marilyn Monroe spent the majority of her early years living in a fictional world she created as an escape from reality. She sometimes told the other children in her orphanage eccentric tales about her having loving parents who had just went on a trip. Monroe would create fake postcards, she would sign from her parents to go along with her story (Spoto, 1993, p. 47). She had also managed to convince herself that Clark Gable was her father, although it was not a possibility (Spoto, 1993, p. 45; 54). After growing up in orphanages, Marilyn realized the only way to be released from the foster system was to get married. Marilyn Monroe decided to drop out of high school and marry her boyfriend at the time. Her first husband was a merchant marine by the name James Dougherty (Hendrickson, 2000). Dougherty was much older than Monroe who was then only sixteen years old. Although like the marriages to her other two husbands, Joe DeMaggio and Arthur Miller did not last for various reasons. Factors Contributing to Mental Illness One can point out many factors could have led or contributed to Marilyn Monroe being diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. As stated in her back ground history she had many stressful events throughout her childhood and adult life. Monroe's childhood was filled with poverty. The simple fact of Monroe's mother being diagnosed with a mental illness posed a greater treat of her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Women : The Impacts Of The Roaring Twenties The 1920's which was also called the Roaring Twenties was a era of economic prosperity and dramatic social change. The 19 amendment that was ratified on August 1920 gave the right of women to vote and the impact of World War I resulted in women questioning traditional morals and values, becoming rebellious. When men left for the war it caused women to have new jobs such as working in factories. Also, "the number of women attending college rose to 10% of the population by the end of the 1920's." Due to women having the opportunity to have jobs and go to college women became more mobile. The corset limited women to be mobile in this era which caused the production of coresets to quickly decline. Less women wearing corset made their figure to be more boyish and straight. The women of this era was called the Flappers, free spirited women, representing the new change of how women looked. The Flappers "lacked hips, breasts, and a defined waist". They would dress in dresses above their knee and ankle showing more legs and having bare arms. They would also stray away from having long hair and cut their hair into a bob to symbolize freedom and independency. As a reason of women questioning traditional values they began to drink, smoke and be more sexual in this era. The 1920's was also the age of Jazz which influenced women to go out and dance and women having more flamboyant and exuberant moves. In the 1920's to be equal among men they had to have a figure of men, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Comparison Of Marilyn Monroe And Audrey Hepburn Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, two of the most iconic women from the entertainment industry in the 1950's, have been able to stay relevant for decades. Despite the fact that these two women looked and acted completely different, their road to success was very similar. After everything they went through from their rough childhood, modeling to film careers, rocky relationships, miscarriages, and career achievements they managed to become two of the most famous actresses and paved the road for other women who were inspired by them. On June 1st, 1926 Norma Jean Mortenson was born in Los Angeles. Norma would eventually change her name to Marilyn Monroe in the year 1946. Marilyn's mother Gladys Pearl Baker decided to give her daughter to a foster family due to many health and financial issues. Marilyn's father was absent and she never knew who he was. Gladys visited Marilyn often and eventually took her back in 1933 even though Marilyn's foster parents had a desire to adopt her. After several months with Marilyn, Gladys was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and was committed into a hospital. Gladys never recovered and stayed in and out of hospitals the remainder of her life. For the next several years Marilyn lived with many foster families. Our country has definitely changed for the better. As time passes things like the way we dress, the features on a car, or even things like the price of a carton of milk change. America has changed in many forms throughout the years, rather it be our advancements in technology, our rules, or the way we act as people. As well as, the way teenagers and young women dressed was influenced by the rock n roll craze. Today, our fashion sense is way different than it was during that time period; however, our fashion would not be the way it is today if it was not for the trends that were popular throughout the fifties. In several ways, the nineteen fifties took a turn in the fashion industry, especially for the woman. Before, while the men were away fighting in World War II, women were sent to fill their spots in the factories. At this point in time the way women dressed was heavily restricted to where they must wear certain things, rather it be the length of their skirts to the size of their collars; however, as women continued to work throughout the nineteen fifties, they began to dress how they felt and dress more comfortable. Some popular fashion trends during the nineteen fifties were poodle skirts for teenagers, slim pencil–line skirts for women, and saddle shoes. Stiletto–heeled shoes also emerged in the early nineteen fifties and there were a variety of different colors so you could get the pair that match your shoes to your outfit. Women such as Audrey Hepburn helped inspire the casual look, and Marilyn Monroe inspired tiny waistlines, full skirts, and busts. On a different note, fashion for men during the nineteen fifties was very quiet and conservative. Men mostly wore plain fabrics in dark, like blue, brown, and grey. People were beginning to feel more freedom in the way that they dressed, their rules were no longer as strict as they had been in the past and they could do what they want; if they wanted to wear a dress that day they could, as well as they could wear a skirt, or even pants. • 20. Conte Poem Analysis Essay Lenae Gomez ENG 110.3 Professor Unger February 11, 2013 Au Contraire In "Conte" by Marilyn Hacker, Cinderella shows the reader a glimpse of her life after the childhood tale ends, a less happier ending than the original story implies. She feels trapped in a constant state of misery and boredom in the royal palace. Without life experience guiding her, Cinderella is in a dilemma caused by her ignorance of the potential consequences of her actions. With the use of irony, structure, and diction, "Conte" shows how innocence and naïveté result in regrettable mistakes that create life experience. The poem deviates from the basic fairy tale through the use of ironic predicaments. Cinderella makes a bold statement from the beginning: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The poem is in free verse with no meter and consists of twenty–eight lines in one big stanza. The poem has all the elements of a letter with the most conclusive evidence being at the end of the poem: "Yours, C" (28). A letter is a personal form of writing and gives the reader an inside perspective into Cinderella's palace life. Most of the sentences are declarative sentences, making the exceptions more obvious in the poem. One of the exceptions is found on lines 17 and 18, where the sentence ends in an exclamation point: "Why not throw it all up, live on the coast / and fish, no, no, impossible with wives!" The exclamation point emphasizes the idea that she feels trapped in her situation as a wife. She wants to find a way out of her misery. On lines 20 and 21 there is a question mark on each line: "or cut my hair, teach (what?) little girls / and live at home with you?" Cinderella reiterates that her options are limited because of her minimal experience in the world. "Conte" uses a couple parentheses within mid–sentence. Cinderella uses the parentheses to convey deeper explanation of her thoughts. For example, Cinderella writes, "Ladies / ignore me, or tell me all their petty secrets / (petty because they can't attend meetings) / about this man or that" (4–7). She does not censor her meaning of petty. Her true feelings show in the letter and validate the rough situation that Cinderella is stuck in. At the end, Cinderella asks her ... • 22. The Conceptual Schema Of Women Women are seen powerless in many instances and Marilyn Frye details the accounts where women are viewed as second to men in "To see and Be Seen." Frye uses a metaphysics approach to better understand how people come to power. She gives a metaphysical understanding of how the world has been determined by people of power, which throughout history has been men. Men have been in authority throughout history and have come up with society's conceptual schema. Frye alludes to people in power don't want to see people who are submissive. Men fit into the conceptual schema, women are excluded but are allowed in the schema in certain ways and lesbians are not included. Lesbians are seen as unnatural and are not recognized in the schema. Their perspective on society is not taken into account, whereas women are recognized but their own perspective on society is completely erased. Men in charge do not identify women or lesbian's experiences and view women as a mystery. The conceptual schema lead women to view society as men do, but lesbians do not view the world through men's perspective. Suppressing a groups perspective excluded them from reality. Men are dominant and women are dominated. Frye mentions Sarah Hoagland's paper saying, "In the conceptual schemes of phallocracies... there is no such thing as a lesbian. This puts a lesbian in the interesting and peculiar position of being something that does not exist, and this position is a singular vantage point with respect to the ... These techniques are composed of visuals, sounds, editing, interviews, political messages and many more. Camera work is used in a manipulative way in Bowling for Columbine. There is a purpose for every camera angle used in the documentary. This can be seen in the scene wherein Michael ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He would go off showing a typical scene and afterwards, the scene that comes out is entirely contradicting the previous one. This method of paradox causes a larger impact towards the audience. An example of this is the irony between the scene where the spokesman for Lockheed Martin in an interview states "The missiles that you're talking about were built and designed to defend us from somebody else who would be aggressors against us. Societies and countries and governments do things that annoy one another but we have to learn to deal with that annoyance or anger or frustration in appropriate ways. Often times the music that is played in the background clashes with the visuals shown on screen. There is juxtaposition between the serious images or visuals and the harmonious melody. The day that Cain bashed his brother Abel's brains in, the only motivation he needed was his own human disposition to violence. Whether you interpret the Bible as literature or as the final word of whatever God may be, Christianity has given us an image of death and sexuality that we have based our culture around. A half–naked dead man hangs in most homes and around our necks, and we have just taken that for granted all our lives. Is it a symbol of hope or hopelessness? The artwork measures 2054 x 1448 x 20mm and the artwork was painted in the year 1962. The analysis will be done by discussing the following in detail: the formal elements, the size, materials and techniques used, line, shape/form, colour, tone as well as the function and meaning of the piece. The analysis will also cover the historical significance of the piece with the connotative meaning but mainly focussing on the denotative meaning of Marilyn Diptych by Andy Warhol. Historical background Andy Warhol's Marilyn Diptych is made of two silver canvases on which Warhol silkscreened a famous photograph of Marilyn Monroe fifty times, as seen in figure 1. In an interview Warhol said, "In August 62 I started doing silkscreens. I wanted something stronger that gave more of an assembly line effect. With silk– screening you pick a photograph, blow it up, transfer it in glue onto silk, and then roll ink across it so the ink goes through the silk but not through the glue" (MOOC peer assessment 2014:06). In this work, Warhol captures both the life and tragic death of the superstar by recreating a publicity photo of her. In the painting, the actress's face is portrayed fifty times, twenty–five times in color on the right and the same number of times in black and white on the left. One way to understand how this specific work should be interpreted is by examining it as an expressionist theorist. To experience this work properly I will act as an expressionist theorist and make sure to recognize my feelings transmitted as I interpret the work, be aware of how it expresses emotion, and grasp the uniqueness of the work. As an expressionist theorist, I recognize that the use of color can express the artist's emotion. Warhol used a warm color mix of bright yellow, orange, and turquoise on the right section and a dull color mix of black and white tints on the left. By using mixed media that represents a slow–fade of the photos towards the end, Warhol captures life's transition from the bright and youthful days when one is full of energy to the tragic halt caused by death, which is also signified by the dull colors. Here, the artist provides a form of experience of life and death that the viewer can relate to. The use of acrylic on canvas and screen painting shows a transition in life from the ... The Paradoxes Of Gender, By Judith Lorber Judith Lorber's idea of gender meaning both sameness and difference is the key concept in Night to His Day, an excerpt from her book The Paradoxes of Gender. In Night to His Day Lorber's main goal in this piece is to show how gender is socially constructed. She does this by stating the many components of gender within society that could be perpetrated either as a social institution (sameness) or what gender is composed of at an individual level (difference). This paper will use examples from Marilyn Monroe's The Seven Year Itch to demonstrate these components of gender. At it's time, The Seven Year Itch was highly received in popular culture. In this scene, Richard's wife explains to their son that his father couldn't leave on vacation with them because he had to stay home to make the money. This shows that families, at least at New York atn this time, were almost totally dependent on the husbands income. That isn't to say that there were no women working in the city at this time, but in multiple scenes it is clear that the women that stayed to work didn't have families, meaning they had to support themselves, and had jobs that were less corporate or hands on. Marilyn Monroe's character was an of one of these women. She is unmarried and mentions no family throughout the movie. She stays in New York working as a model and actress and makes just enough to get by. Even though she is not married to Richard, she still shows a sort of dependence to him, like when she asks to stay the night for his air conditioning, which begins to show an example of gendered personalities, or females depending on the males in their lives. Another example of the division of labor would be Richard's secretary. Although her role is quite minor and it is never explicitly stated, it can assumed that she is not married through Richard's daydreams about her. Informative Essay On Marilyn Monroe Jacy Pringle Mrs. Peter 11th LA October 9, 2017 It is hard for a person to stay quiet when everyone knows your name, for Marilyn Monroe this was the case; Monroe was everyone's new trend. Since her first breath Monroe was destined to have fame and fortune, just from her looks. Life carried on for her in a less luxurious way then expected, her story is essentially a reflection of Cinderella. As connections formed at a young age and talent was already recognized, life kicked in like a rocket for Monroe from the moment she was born. Doors of opportunity were constantly being opened for her. Singing Happy Birthday for JFK, and being Hugh Hefner's first model are only things that Monroe can be responsible for (Jackson, Denny). Marilyn Monroe's career may seem as if she made it all by herself; instead, she already had strong connections to Hollywood through her mother's career, and the Kennedy's family name. The iconic sex symbol of the 50's has history unlike any other Hollywood superstar. Marilyn Monroe was born into an unstable family, and soon later given up for adoption. However, two points don't add up. Her mother Gladys Pearl Baker was involved in the film industry during her pregnancy with Monroe (Jackson, Denny). Warhol used his process throughout the 1960s to reproduce multiple portraits of celebrities, including Marilyn Diptych, Michael Jackson , Elizabeth TaylorV and Mao. Andy Warhol duplicated images of mass–produced commercial prints, using famous people, suggesting that the media marketed celebrities just like products. Warhol, was fascinated with the rich and famous since his childhood. Marilyn Diptych, by Andy Warhol in 1962, it is made in a process called silkscreen. Its dimensions are 80.88 in ×114.00 in. Throughout the years, there have been a few strong female roles, but not enough. In Frank Bruni's article, "Waiting for Wonder Woman", he declares that there aren't enough movies with strong female characters. Bruni starts off with, "Maybe because I have seven nieces whose dreams matter to me, maybe because I have so many female friends whose talents dazzle me." He goes into how he has plenty of women around him that he knows have strong passions and dreams. He believes that movies should be more equal. There should be women that are saving citizens or the world, or at least doing something heroic, not just men. The appearance of strong women are missing in popular movies and shows.. The world wants this "equality", yet what everyone watches on the TV is the complete opposite. Impact Of Consumer Culture In The 1950s During the 1950's art took a major turn in history from traditional styles depicting people and scenes of everyday life to abstract thoughts and ideas that were transformed onto a canvas to express emotions and ideals in society. People, events, and society have always impacted several styles of art, but the consumer culture in the 1950's impacted art in a new completely unique way. Post WWII society was more industrialized and more focused on developing and selling new products. The postwar generation had more disposable income to spend on the latest and greatest products and the market turned to advertisements in mass media to get their products out there to consumers. With televisions and films increasing in popularity the market flooded these forms of media with catchy flashy ads that showed favorable people like movie stars using products. With the increasing use of mass media, the culture shifted to consumerism which effectively shifted art as well. Art was directly impacted by the consumer culture because of society's use of advertisements, photographs, and films which artists like Richard Hamilton and Andy Warhol used those elements in their own works to portray the change of societal standards in a new modern style of art called pop art. He uses icons of the media such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and Elizabeth Taylor and recognizable objects from the modern household such as Campbell soup cans and Coca–Cola bottles, these objects bridge the gap between the classes of fine and commercial art. However as the mural touched the nerves of many and was painted over with silver paint weeks before the fair opened. Showing undesirables that are of normal appearance but have criminal records, was very controversial as fine art was thought to only depict desirables. These wanted men were however relevant to the time in which they were depicted by the commissioned artists. Warhol also chose the subject of the electric chair, in paintings such as Electric Chair and Lavender Disaster, in which an unknown person, a convicted killer will be executed. These works show an electric chair, easily identifiable by the restraints attached in an otherwise empty room. Looking at Hugh Hefner's Portrait from Various Lenses Essays Cynthia Freeland argued that art communicates significance but there is no one precise hypothetical approach that tells us how to best interpret a work of art. Although there are better interpretations of a piece artwork than others, there is no one–way to interpret a single piece of art. The best interpretations understand the background of the artist while also focusing on the style that the artist uses. The emotions and ideas that come from looking at a piece of art work can come from the artist's perspective of that of the viewer. Tolstoy's belief of "an artist's chief job is to express and communicate emotions to an audience" (Freeland, 155) is conveyed when you initially look at the Hugh Hefner portrait. Every viewer has their own interpretation, but most would argue that when you look at this portrait you are able to see different expressions on the five characters faces– impacting the viewer with the same experience that Shay got when photographing this image. Tolstoy and Freud both understand that art can communicate emotions and feelings, while Tolstoy believes that art communicates conscious emotions and feelings, Freud believes that art communicates unconscious emotions and feelings. Interpretations are very diverse and come from all different areas and when we view Hugh Hefner, photographed by Art Shay, through Freud's perspective, we are filled with emotions that are taken from past experiences. Freud believed that when we look at a portrait or another art form, it ignites "unconscious feelings–ones the artist [or the viewer] might not even admit to having" (Freeland, 157). Arthur Miller Essay Writing Arthur Miller was best known for his play that he wrote which made it to Broadway, but his other works may have been some of the most electrifying stories from this era. Arthur Miller was born in Harlem, New York on October 17th, 1915. His family lost nearly everything they had in the stock market crash of 1929, however Arthur Miller attended the University of Michigan to study journalism in 1929 ("Arthur Miller" 1). While he attended Michigan, he was the night editor of the student paper, the "Michigan Daily". Arthur Miller is best known for writing radio plays, screenplays, short stories, and novels (1). While in college, Miller won several awards including the "Avery Hopwood Award" for the first play he wrote, No Villain. After college, Arthur Miller moved back home to begin his career in playwriting. Arthur Miller's writings defied his readers by being fearless in his stories that he wrote. Miller worked very hard to get the best information for his stories. One example was The Crucible, this was about Joe McCarthy and his communist hunts (1). Miller wrote about this and got down to the last detail. Miller was even blacklisted, which prevented him from working in theaters and for movie companies, this was soon reversed however, as it was unnecessary (3). One way in which Arthur Miller influenced other writers in his era was by pushing the limits for awards and best stories. His play Death of a Salesman was a hit in 1947 and pushed Broadway plays to beat his works. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

People have proposed many theories as to why Marilyn died; the most popular conspiracy theory being the result of her death by the hands Kennedys. However, some people may say that there is evidence to support this theory, but these are just fabricated lies spread by people trying to harm the Kennedy's reputation. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The investigation went on for three months and one would think that after a thorough three month investigation that trained investigators would find evidence to support the fact that Monroe was murdered. However, they did not find any evidence because there was no credible evidence to support the fact that she was murdered. Although, there was plenty of evidence found by investigators to display that she died of an overdose. Including her autopsy, this displayed no signs of foul play but an abundant amount of drugs. If she was murdered, there would obviously be signs of foul play. Lastly, it is important to note that Marilyn had a drug addiction, and this was not the only time she had tried drugs. Since she had heavily relied on pills in her daily life to just function normally and maintain the image that she was still rather normally, she became heavily dependent on those pills, which inevitably lead to an addiction. The pills Monroe was addicted to were used to control her behavior, which leads to the assumption that she was plagued with mental issues, and it is not uncommon for someone with a mental disorder to want to end their life. Therefore, it is evident that there is credible evidence to support the fact that Monroe died from an overdose because the amount of drugs in her body was way passed the lethal amount, a thorough investigation was conducted to look for evidence that she was murdered and there was none, and lastly she suffered from ... The Media, particularly television and film have been blamed for many atrocities over the years; some of these can be indirectly related to the media's involvement on people's lives. But some cannot. As a Media and Psychology student I have different views on the debate of media blame. As a psychologist I can understand the connection with the media and violence, i.e. violence is a behaviour, which in theory, is learnt and repeated on another. Therefore this behaviour must derive from a source. Which it can be argued, could be a media text. But as a media student I can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is an electronic device fitted within a television, which allows the operator to block out programmes, defined as violent or sexual explicit. This in turn has raised a lot of questions about cultural competency. In order to understand the issues surrounding cultural competency first we must define it. The French Sociologist Pierre Bourdieu penned the theory that social class and gender carry with them different cultural competencies. And these affect the ease of understanding and hence the enjoyment of different media and art forms. Therefore it follows that some media formats may exclude sections of society who do not possess those required competences. The 'v' Chip can be seen to automatically define and exclude members of society based on what a panel defines as violent or sexual explicit. Consequently it could be argued that violence or sex may be needed in order to get a certain agenda across to the audience. For example the violence seen within Quentin Tarantino's 'Reservoir Dogs' can be accepted and justified because it is shown to be painful and in a suitable context to the plot and the characters. As a result with out the violent climax to the film, the plot would not be able to achieve its aim, as a fictional view of murderous crime.
