2. New England Colonies
• Consists of: Rhode Island, Connecticut,
Massachusetts and New Hampshire
• People who settled here wanted to keep their
family together
• Mainly settled by Puritans and Pilgrims
• They were previously religious dissenters in
England
• Many settled for religious freedom
3. • Few settled to make money
• Largely subsistence farming and fishing
communities
• People made their own things, like clothes
and shoes
• Grew their own food
• Any other food was shipped from England
4. • Had large easily navigated ports
• Shipbuilding was important
• Boston was major New England port in
Massachusetts
• Then Massachusetts started expanding into
new colonies
• Stricter puritans formed Connecticut
• Less restrictive puritans formed Rhode Island
5. Middle Colonies
• Consisted of Delaware, Pennsylvania, New
York, and New Jersey
• People wanted to practice their own religion
• Settlers didn’t bring their families
• Quakers settled in Pennsylvania, named for
William Penn
• Pennsylvania became a prosperous place
6. • Most of the people were not indentured
servants
• Many were able to establish themselves upon
arriving
• Part agricultural, part industrial
• Crops grown in Pennsylvania and New York
• Factories in Maryland and Pennsylvania
• Also traded with England

• Purpose of Georgia was to be a buffer
