2. Introduction to Joseph Henry
• Joseph Henry, from Sonoma County, discovered the Universities
Fighting World Hunger (UFWH) through his studies in The
Sparkman Centre for Global Health.
• He applied for a scholarship to the UFWH conference in Auburn in
2010 and was accepted.
• Heard stories of the things people did to raise the profile of the
UFWH and raise money for the WFP at the summit.
• He was especially impressed with one gentleman who had run
three marathons in three consecutive days — a total of 78.6 miles

• Henry has been running marathons and ultramarathons
(about 50 miles) for a few years, but never anything like
this.
• He plans to run about 30 miles a day for 17 days during
his venture.
• He will arrive in Guelph Feb. 25, the day the UFWH
summit begins.

• He's been running marathons and ultramarathons (about

• To prepare for this run, he trained for six months, lifting
weights and working with a trainer.
• Accompanying him on his trek to Guelph are his father,
Rick, a registered nurse, and another UAB student, Leslie
Lloyd.
5. Impact of Joseph Henry’s Venture
• Joseph hopes to raise $100,000 for the United Nations
World Food Program
• He will stop at other universities to talk to students and
the media to inspire others, particularly young people,
to take action against hunger.
• He hopes to raise awareness for both the hunger
conference and the need for people to come together to
find solutions to solve global hunger.
