1. Modern Humanities – Poetry/Lyric Assignment
Objective: To read and gather information about a specific poet or song-writer and present your
information to the rest of the class.
Requirements:
 You must research your given poet or song-writer, primarily on your own time.
 You will be required to analyze and present the poet’s or song-writer’s meaning of the song.
Why did he or she write this piece? What does the piece mean?
 You will be required to analyze and present your meaning of the song. Why do you think
the writer wrote this piece? What does it personally mean to you after reading or hearing it?
 You will be assessed on your presentation style, including eye contact, diction, rate and your
enthusiasm. This is vital and good practice for your Boards!
 You must create one visual aide in the form of a collage. Therefore, you must use
magazines, clip art or any other kinds of pictures to create an interpretive representation of
your assigned piece. The more colorful and graphically pleasing, the better! The bigger the
better, in this case.
 You must submit 3 sources to me, in correct MLA format. These can be either books,
magazines, or websites. For most information, you will be able to find the lyrics or poems
and analysis of them on various websites.
This assignment is due the day that you are chosen to present! The first four presenters will be
starting on Wednesday, April 13. If you would like to volunteer to be one of the first, by all
means, please do so! A whopping +2 bonus points is your reward.
If you choose to memorize your given piece, you will receive 10 bonus points right off the
bat! Some of these are longer; therefore, this is an option. However, memorization of your
work does usually lend to better eye contact and inflection in presentation, therefore, better
score! This assignment is worth 80 pts.
