4. Once you have decided what you’re
going to do you need to plan
carefully
G – Genre
A – Audience
P – Purpose
These need to be clearly established
and maintained in your writing.
5. Task One
Look at the collection of non-fiction texts you
have been given.
In your groups read the texts and write down
the G.A.P for each text.
Which text is the most effective and
engaging? Why?
Decide what theme links your texts.
Be prepared to feed back your findings.
6. Task Two
Use the planning grid below to organise your
ideas and begin planning your work.
Genre – What form will your work
take? What are the literary and
linguistic features of this Genre?
Audience – Who is your text aimed
at?
Purpose – What is the overall
purpose of the text? Why are you
writing it? To inform, explain,
instruct…. What are the literary
and linguistic features for this
purpose?
7. Review
Swap your work with another pupil and peer
assess their work.
Have they clearly planned to write for the
correct G.A.P?
Are there any further literary and linguistic
features for this genre and purpose that they
have not included?
Can you suggest any improvements or anything
else they should include in their finished piece?
8. Homework
To research the features of the genre and
purpose you are writing for.
Find at least two examples of this text type.
Read carefully and highlight the literary and
linguistic features used in the text.
