Mental Attitude: These Five Life Skills Can Boost Your Well-Being. In a study involving more than 8,000 people,
investigators found that individuals with emotional stability, determination, control, optimism, and conscientiousness
experienced fewer chronic diseases, less depression, less social isolation, and greater financial stability. Study co-leader Dr.
Andrew Steptoe comments, “We were surprised by the range of processes—economic, social, psychological, biological, and
health and disability related—that seem to be related to these life skills. Our research suggests that fostering and maintaining
these skills in adult life may be relevant to health and well-being at older ages.”

Health Alert: An Increasing Numbers of Younger Americans Are Having Strokes! New research suggests that strokes are
on the rise among Americans under the age of 65. An analysis of data on stroke hospitalizations in the United States found the
number of adults under age 65 admitted to the hospital for stroke increased 21% over the last decade. The researchers suspect
that an increase in stroke risk factors—such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, and smoking—are to
blame for the rise in strokes among younger adults. JAMA Neurology, April 2017
Diet: Are You Lactose Intolerant? If you’re lactose intolerant, you may suffer from symptoms such as bloating, gas, and
diarrhea after you eat or drink dairy products. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases notes that
lactose intolerance can lead to the following: uncomfortable digestive symptoms from being unable to digest lactose; lack of
calcium and vitamin D due to insufficient dairy consumption; and the development of osteoporosis (weakening of bones).

Exercise: Heart-Rate Accuracy of Popular Activity Trackers Not So Accurate. Wrist-worn activity trackers don’t appear to
reliably assess heart rate. In a new study, investigators tested four popular activity trackers against the results of an
electrocardiograph (EKG) and found the results varied among the different models and they were much less accurate during
exercise than at rest. Annals of Internal Medicine, April 2017
Chiropractic: Pregnancy Increases Risk of a Degenerative Spinal Condition. A condition called degenerative
spondylolisthesis is a major cause of low back pain in the older adults, especially women. Since low back pain and impaired
abdominal muscle function are common during pregnancy, researchers recently set out to determine if pregnancy could be a
factor in the development of this degenerative spondylolisthesis. The study included 332 women who completed questionnaire
regarding pregnancies, surgeries, and age of menopause, among other things. The results revealed that each full-term pregnancy
increases a woman’s odds of developing degenerative spondylolisthesis by 22%. Additionally, women who had a hysterectomy
had double the odds for degenerative spondylolisthesis when compared with those who did not undergo the procedure. Previous
studies have shown that individuals with spondylolisthesis can benefit from chiropractic treatment. Spine, March 2017
Wellness/Prevention: Safe Eating at Work. Do you eat lunch at work? If you do, make sure you follow these food safety
rules from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: wash your hands with soap and water before and after you eat; don't allow
your lunch or leftovers to be unrefrigerated for more than two hours; reheat leftovers to 165 degrees Fahrenheit (73.9 degrees
Celsius); store perishable foods in the refrigerator set to below 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4.44 degrees Celsius); if you re-use the
same lunch bag, wash it frequently; and defrost frozen foods in the microwave or refrigerator.
