How To Write A Defining Moment Essay
It was a sunny April afternoon. I was at the small, but beautiful green park that looked like one you
would see in movies. I was with my friend and my brother. I was just being my 7 year old second
grade self when life decided to throw a curveball at me. We were playing tag, and my friend was it. I
was sitting at the top of the slide that I had been told many times to be careful on. My brother was
hiding in the little dirt hole at the end of the grey metal slide that was rusting underneath. Thinking
Please don't make me be it. . I leaned over the edge letting my feet dangle over it. I saw her climbing
up the steep stairs that lead to the top where I was sitting. I knew that I was faster and if I had to I
could run away.
"Hey I see you up there!" she shouted climbing faster and faster and getting closer and closer.
"No you don't," I giggled. Then I turned around and began to lift my leg back onto the slide when I
felt a push and my friend saying "Tag! You're it" and felt myself slip over the edge. From what felt
like forever I hit the ground with a loud THUD! I felt pain shoot into my ... Show more content on

They handed it to my parents and told them to fill it out before my surgery. So we went home and I
had a hard time sleeping. It felt like I had just gotten home but 8 hours later I was back in the ER
room. I had to put on a gown. I walked down the hall in my gown with my parents to my operating
room. When we got there I was told to lay on the table which had white paper over it. This room had
a lot of metal tools and the pink wrap for my cast. I smelt just like the first room I had been in but it
smelt like a lot of different. cleaning supplies. They put a gas mask thing on me and told me to count

Yellow Fever Compare And Contrast
Ava Schwartz Yellow fever compare and contrast In 1793 Philadelphia suffered from a deadly
disease that spread all through the town; it was called yellow fever. The Philadelphia Doctors and
the French doctors were attempting to treat yellow fever. The doctors had many ways to try to fix
this, but they did not have the technology we do today. Yellow fever occurred 1793. The outbreak
happened in Philadelphia. This sad event that killed many people was all because of infected
mosquitoes. They came over with the ill refuges. About 2,000 to 5,000 people died. All in all, this
was one of the one of the worst things to occur in history There is so much that the French and the

Analyzing Erikson's Psychosocial Stages Of Human Development
Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial stages, is considered a significant concrete basis for
understanding human progression and development (Arnold, 2016)
This essay will identify two characters' lifespan development stages from Erik Erickson's theory,
and further explain the relevance of the identified stages in accordance with the communication used
between the pair. From this communication further identifying and describing meta–communication
factors that influenced the interpretation of the effective communication. In the clip of the two
characters Sean and the doctor, there are two factors that contributed to conflict that will be

This lack of self–awareness is apparent, in his body language, verbal, and nonverbal communication

Erickson's lifespan development stages are vital to the way the two characters Sean and the doctor
have communicated. Because both characters are at two various stages they both communicate
different. Sean for example is displaying negative factors of communication and this is resulting
from his psychosocial behaviour. This presenting stage of Sean entails communication that is
immature and appropriate for a small child having a tantrum, arguing with the doctor on what he
thinks his best interests are,
He does not have the correct decision making tools to communicate efficiently for theoretical

and naive arguing with the doctor on what his welfare should involve. Sean does not fully

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child,...
'The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the
Collision of Two Cultures' is a book written in 1997 by the author Anne Fadiman. This book is
based on a true story of the life of a Hmong child, Lia Lee who is epileptic. She suffers from
numerous grand mal seizures and eventually she becomes vegetative for the remainder of her life.
The intention of this book, however, is not Lia's condition, but to highlight the problems that exist
between the two cultures and the constant battles that Lia's doctors and parents face due to the
cultural barriers that exist between them. This is not just only a story of an ill child but about the
more diverse battle between Eastern and Western medicine and how each view and treat patients in
such different ways. In this essay the different health–seeking strategies used during Lia's illness, the
contrasting views between Lia's parents and the American healthcare professionals and the theories
of illness causation will be discussed.
The different views held by American healthcare professionals and Lia's parents are clearly
displayed in this story. There are several different theories of illness causation identified in the book.
From the very beginning, the reason Lia's epileptic seizures started are different between her parents
and doctors. Her doctors believe the scientific rationale and they try and decode the information to
find the cause (Helman, 2002). They test Lia's blood and give her several

Westlake Research Paper
Westlake Research Hospital A hospital is conducting a double blind test of a new depression drug. It
will involve about 20 doctors and about 400 patients. Half of the patients will get the new drug and
half will get traditional Prozac. Neither the doctors nor the patients will know who is getting which
drug. Only two test supervisors will know who is getting what. These tests will last about 18
months. Each doctor will see 20 patients initially, though it is expected some patients will drop out
over time. Each patient will be be coming in twice a month for a checkup and interviews with their
doctor. The drugs will be dispersed in a generic bottle by the two supervisors one of whom is a
pharmacist. To track this study, the hospital will need a database. It will need to track patients'
information from their first screening through each of their interviews. In particular, they are
looking at whether the patient seems more depressed or less, what their appetite is like, are they
sleeping, and what kind of activities they are engaged in, if any. Also, they will be looking for
specific physical side effects such as rashes, high blood pressure, irregular heart rhythms, or liver or
kidney problems. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They also need to be able to enter blood pressures, blood test results, the depression indicators, their
own notes, and so on for each session. Patients should be able to see their own medical profile, the
doctor's notes, and nothing else. Only the two researchers should be able to see everything: all
patient information, all doctors' notes, and which drug each patient is being given. There is always
some danger of spying by other companies interested in similar drugs,so in addition to the security
of the blind test, the database needs to be secured against outside intrusion as

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Universal Healthcare System
Every healthcare system in existence has advantages and disadvantages. Each healthcare system
benefits different populations. The universal healthcare system, however, is often believed to be one
of the best healthcare systems in the world. It is questionable why this is presumed because this
system has a number of flaws that creates challenges for doctors, families, and communities. Many
people can find themselves frustrated due to long waiting lists and the seemingly apathetic work of
physicians when it comes to the care of their patients. A previous 5–year resident of Canada
experienced the challenges of the universal healthcare system first hand. In an interview, she
declared that "if someone needed to go to the doctor they had to plan ... Show more content on

This has created a shortage of physicians within these rural areas, leaving many patients without a
primary physician. Bazuik lived in Ontario for the five years she was in Canada. The closest big city
being Toronto, seven hours away. During this time, she had two different physicians. She recalled,
"we did have a family physician, but some people did not and they were on a waiting list" (Bazuik).
These citizens are a part of the "1.5 million Ontarians (or 12 percent of that province's population)
[that] can't find family physicians" (Grazter). Outside of this province there are places all across
Canada with the same issues. This lack of patient care is impacting citizens to stay in these areas and
even Canada. Universal health care causes a chain of reactions within Canada. Before it begins to
impact patients and families, the doctors are affected causing the most influential outcomes within
the country. A survey done found that 55 per cent of doctors reported that their practices are being
influenced by government–driven policies rather than evidence–based clinical medicine and 70 per
cent of doctors reported that they are feeling attacked or vilified by the Canadian government (Gill).
These are a selected number of reasons that

Comparison of Two Hospital Dramas: Casualty and ER Essay
Comparison of Two Hospital Dramas: Casualty and ER
This essay will compare the two hospital dramas, Casualty and ER.
Casualty is a British hospital drama. It is shown on BBC1 at 8:05 on a Saturday evening .It has been
one of the biggest and most popular hospital dramas ever made in Britain. The fact that it's lasted
over ten series, has been sold to many countries around the world, and it still manages to pull in big
audiences speaks for itself. The series is set in the fictional town of Holby, and is set in the hospital,
Holby A+E.
ER, on the other hand, is an American based hospital drama. It is shown in America on NBC, at

Disputes between doctors and nurses arise. The use of technical language is used a lot to make the
viewers respect the doctors for what they are doing and make the program seem more realistic. The
viewers also treat them as professionals. Doctors and nurses home life often affects their work. A
doctor or nurse often has a hidden secret, which could affect his/her work. A junior doctor often
disagrees with a senior doctor in a life or death situation, sometimes the junior doctor is right, but
sometimes s/he is wrong.
To be successful over a long period of time and keep the same amount of audiences, though, the
writers have to develop the conventions and change them slightly. They may make them more
detailed.
This, as the popularity and ratings show for the two programmes, works and in my mind the two
programmes are still as good as when they first started, around ten series ago.
In order to pull big audiences the two programmes use fairly attractive doctors and nurses (which, in
reality is very unlikely). To pull a mix of races, the doctors and nurses, in the two shows, are of
mixed race. The writers know that this will bring a bigger audience to the show. For example. If a
black doctor or nurse is used, this will attract a black audience.
I think that this is very successful and attracts a larger amount of people than it would if only white

Is It A Right Or Wrong?
There comes a time when sometimes you feel more right than someone else. Your evidence can be
true to prove a point, but also someone else 's can be true too and just have a different approach to it.
This may result in a disagreement over who has the best way to do it. The world is filled with
different people, which will result in multiple ways to do certain things even if the facts are the
same. Sometimes we get into arguments with people over the simplest stuff because of the things we
believe or think are morally right based on our culture or facts that we are taught. It's a part of life
and it will happen. To me, facts are the evidence or information given to prove that something is
true. It's how we face reality, by having something ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, he believed that the US knew all about this attack happening and decided not to do anything
about it. Basil Rauch, disagrees with Beard 's argument saying that " America did not know of any
attack in advance. It, however, knew that there would be an attack somewhere. America had made
some efforts to challenge Japan to take the first shot, (Casanova313)." He 's saying that this had
nothing to do with the raw material and that American knew that there would be a possibility of
something happening, but not this. Another historian, Roberta Wohlster looked at this attack in a
different way, not paying a lot of attention to if the government needed an attack on Japan, but the
knowledge about the attack before it happened. Wohlster concluded, "America, in fact, had received
enough warning and it almost obvious that Japan was to attack. They, however, chose to ignore the
evidence, (Casanova313)." She believes they knew about and didn't want to do anything. Her point
of view is similar to Beard, who also thought the US knew that the attack from Japan would occur.
These viewpoints change as years go by due to new information coming in, which causes that
change in perspective. An example of this is from John Toland, an American writer, and historians,
stating, "...that the navy knows of the attack days before the attack, which meant that the president
had some knowledge of it, (Casanova313)." Toland came to this

Informative Essay: Doctors Without Borders Legacy
Doctors Without Borders Legacy "It's simple really: go where the patients are. It seems obvious, but
at the time it was a revolutionary concept because borders got in the way." Says one of the founders
of international organization, Doctors Without Borders. This unit was all about legacies, both good
and bad. A legacy is what a person leaves and lots of times other people judge them by it. For this
project the instructions were to pick a person or movement to research. Started during an extremely
disastrous time, Doctors Without Borders helps people all over the world. According to Wikipedia,
before 1970 over 15% of France's population was below the poverty line ("Poverty in France"). At

countries. Not only does the organization focus on helping people with mental and physical
problems but also is very outspoken about the issues the world is facing. Started during an

Kouchner said before, Doctors Without Borders organization goes wherever the people who need

Philadelphia Yellow Fever
224 years ago, in 1793, a yellow fever epidemic roared over Philadelphia. This was a devastating
time for all Philadelphians. Although there were no cures, there were treatments. There were two
types of doctors back in this time; the French doctors and the American. Mosquitos are the cause of
this. They (the mosquitos) got infected by the refuges. The mosquitos spread the yellow fever to
mankind. This epidemic killed a couple thousand people. The Doctors were the only people who
could treat this bilious fever. The doctors had some similar tactics or ways to treat. First of all, both
of the doctors truly cared for there patients. Evidently, in the second to last paragraph, it read that
"the "French Cure" is keeping their patients alive" and for the Philadelphian it reads "they had
always cared for their patients". The second comparison I can make is to feed the patient's lots of
liquids. For example, in paragraph 3 it says for Philadelphian "Drink wine and take cold baths" and
for French is reads "Dr. Deveze advocating giving patients plenty of fluids". Last but not least, the
two doctors (French and Philadelphian) both give out pain relievers. In paragraph 2 it says, "Take a
salt of tartar in lime juice and barley water and laudanum (pain killer)" and in paragraph 12 it also
says, " Pain medications and fever–reducing medications were used to relieve symptoms of fever
and aching". ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the French doctors make the victims take a ice cold bath instead. Last of all, the American doctors

Kant's Doctor-Placebo Case Study
If Kant were correct by saying that his formulas all connect and have similar and the same results, in
his Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals, the humanity formulation would produce the same
result as universal formulation , but this is not the case. Kant argues that the differences between the
formulas are only subjective , meaning they have different connotations – one is directed towards
universal morality and the other humanity morality. However, he sees that there is no objective
practical differences between the formulas, which imply that the formulas end results, would parallel
one another; they'd be the same either both rational or both not. But here is Kant's problem. When
looking at the doctor–placebo scenario through the lens of universal law and then through the lens of
humanity law we are left with opposing results. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

What wasted resources or wasted efforts have you seen/heard about in health care today? After

to the Institute of Medicine, about 30 percent of U.S. health care spending (about $750 billion) was
wasted in 2009 on unnecessary services, excessive administrative costs, fraud and other problems
(Shalby & Rolfes, 2012). One of the examples that got my attention was a 72–year–old male that

Role of Cross-Cultural Misunderstanding in Ruining Lia's Life
Role of Cross–cultural Misunderstanding in Ruining Lia's Life Lia is born of a loving Hmong

Hmong community, the condition is curable, and the presence of spirits in such a patient's soul is
considered a blessing. However, American doctors in a community medical center fail to understand
and appreciate Lia's parents' approach to the child's disease, and are only interested in saving this

This sequence of events is an affirmation that the doctors ought to have given a chance to the
Shamans, whose initial contribution might have ensured a normal life for the girl. Language barrier
was a major factor that served to extend the boundary existing between the two cultures. Some of
the utterances made by the doctors were interpreted right but were understood wrongly (Swartz 2).
This resulted in a worsened discernment of the American doctors by the Lees and Hmong as an
entity alike. In the case of an emergency, the Lees needed to contact an ambulance, but could not
communicate with the hospital. This necessitated the involvement of their learned nephew, who
would call an ambulance. The interpretation process would at times limit the effectiveness of the
message intended by either party. For instance, when Lia was undergoing critical care in MCMC,
the Lees needed to be comforted, a process which had to be done by an interpreter. Before the final
discharge, miscommunication between Lia's mother and the doctors had her think that the nurses
disconnected medicine tubes off Lia in order to give it to some other patient; a mean act. In the same
incident, Lia's father was made to sign a letter of discharge for Lia, which would happen in two
hours. However, he understood this as a letter to guarantee death in two

Two Fundamental Differences Between Medical Doctors And...
Chiropractic Myths
When it comes to chiropractic, the general public have come a long way with their basic
understanding of what they actually do, but there are still some myths and mystery which continue
to surround this profession. There are two fundamental differences between medical doctors and
doctors of chiropractic. A standard doctor is a general practitioner (GP) who applies medical
knowledge to treat patients when a symptom presents itself. A chiropractor is a specialist who
corrects spinal alignment with highly specialised manipulation techniques, encouraging the body's
well–being, with a holistic philosophy. Here are a couple of common misconceptions.
Myth 1 – Is a Chiropractor a REAL Doctor?
Once a doctor of chiropractic achieves their degree, their learning institution grants them a DC or
Doctor of Chiropractic degree. This takes several years and requires lengthy study. They are licensed
health care providers and follow a similarly fierce and gruelling medical curricula to that of a degree
in medicine. In fact, they spend more hours in the classroom than their medical counterparts. As
with medical doctors, prior to graduation, supervised residency work is required with real patients
and these are undertaken in a clinical environment.
Chiropractors are subject to government standards and national peer–review boards and in many
countries, including Australia, are included in compensation programmes such as Medicare. The
main difference between medical doctors

Disadvantages Of A Doctor
A doctor is a person who maintains or restore human health through the practice of medicine. A
doctor will diagnose and treat human diseases, injuries, ailments or other conditions.
A doctor's schedule will be determined based on the kind of medicine they practice. Some doctors
work in hospitals and some work in clinics or polyclinics. However there are also doctors working
in laboratory, those doctors are trying to find a new cure to diseases.
Typical doctors have very long working hours and they must be ready for emergencies all around

the laboratory will be asked to make a lot of different cures. One wrong move and the patient will

depending on how their body reacts to the medication. These doctors must also rush a cure during
emergencies. One example of such emergencies is the SARS breakout. These doctors had to rush
out a cure as soon as possible. Every minute they waste may result in another death. Hence, they
will feel very stress.

Some clinics might charge high consultation fee only because the medication they use is very new

The personality of Doctor Manette has greatly altered throughout the book due to realizing he is
capable of great feats. Doctor Manette was first terrified of the world and needed people to guide

all people and items of the world were unknown and strange. To cope with his anxiety, the Doctor
turned to shoemaking, working for countless hours in the Defarge's tavern. Meeting his daughter
Lucie helped greatly decrease this peculiar behavior, but the Doctor still did not have a sense of self.
When asked if he would like to have a life similar to what he had before he was imprisoned, the
Doctor responded, "'I hope you care to be recalled to life? And the old answer: 'I can't say'" (Dickens

therefore does not know otherwise from it. He has been secluded from the outside world for so long

The Role of Resurrection in A Tale of Two Cities Essay
Robespierre, the dictator of the Committee of Public Safety during the Reign of Terror once said,
"Terror is nothing other than [just], prompt, severe, [and] inflexible." If terror is just, would 30,000
men and women across France have lost their lives during the Reign of Terror? In Charles Dickens's
book, A Tale of Two Cities, Dickens uses the injustice in the French Revolution and the corruption
in societies of that time to show the theme of resurrection along with many other themes. In the
novel, the heroes and heroine use sacrifices to resurrect someone important in their lives. However,
through the process of resurrecting another, some characters are also resurrected themselves. The

The theme is first shown in the second chapter of the book through the trial of Charles Darnay, one
of the main characters in the novel. During the trial, Charles Darnay is accused of spying for the
Americans during the American Revolution. He would have been found guilty; however, Sydney
Carton, the novel's greatest hero, saved him from a death sentence. By showing the similarities
between Darnay and himself, Sydney Carton destroys one of the witnesses' statements. This shows
again the theme of resurrection because Carton recalls Darnay to life from a near–death experience.
Through Darnay's resurrection, readers are also introduced to Sydney Carton, a lawyer who is, in the
public's eye, nothing but a lazy drunk who has never amounted to anything as shown in Charles
Darnay's trial. This description later gets contradicted once Dickens shows Carton to be a rather
intelligent man who wasted his life by working for others rather than showing his worth to the
public. Carton is even described as a jackal who is always working for the lion, aka Mr. Stryver,
Carton's business partner. As Book Two develops, it became obvious to the reader that Carton is a
man in need of resurrection,

The Wilmington Riots Of 1898
Inspired by the Wilmington Riots of 1898, Charles Chesnutt delves deep into the racial tensions of
the South in his novel On the Marrow of Tradition. Despite being set well after the end of the Civil
War, the struggle between the black and white races is far from over. The white race insists on
maintaining complete control in every aspect of society, including personal matters. They are
constantly demanding that the black community serve them. On the other end, the black race is
struggling to survive the harsh conditions the white–dominated society imposes on them.
Throughout the novel, Chesnutt reminds us of the ongoing battle between the two races. At the same
time, Chesnutt explores the effect this has on various members in society. The youngest two
characters in the novel, Dodie and Doctor Miller's son, exemplify the conditions and consequences
for the black and white races. Although they seem to be secondary characters in On the Marrow of
Tradition, both Dodie and Doctor Miller's son play a crucial role in the representation of their
respective races. It does not take long to ascertain the striking resemblance between the two children
in the novel. The novel opens with the birth of Dodie, the only son of one of the most successful
white characters in the novel, Major Carteret. As the founder of "the Morning Chronicle...the
leading organ of his party and the most influential paper in the State," Major Carteret could easily be

In his historical fiction novel, A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens uses the experiences of Doctor

Doctor Manette introduces the theme of resurrection through his experience of being recalled to life.
The first book title of the novel is "Recalled to Life". Right away, Dicken's expresses this theme
through the very first words of the novel so he can use it throughout the rest of it. The title is
referring to Doctor Manette and his resurrection, as it is the most prominent, if not only, resurrection
present. If one is to be resurrected, they need to be resurrected from somewhere, and in this instance,
that place would be the cell above Monsignor Defarge's shop, who was the Doctor's close friend.
The description of the Doctor shows him as an old, decrepit, worn down, and broken man. Before,
Mr. Lorry mentions someone who has been "buried alive for eighteen years" (20), and it is later
revealed that he is talking about the Doctor. Then, after meeting the Doctor and taking him in a
carriage, Mr. Lorry refers to the cell as a "grave" and that Doctor Manette has been "dug out", or
resurrected. Through Doctor Manette, Dickens shows that even people who have been cast out for
years are able to be resurrected. Dickens then leaves the first book as a cliffhanger, as Lorry
questions, "would you like to be recalled to life?" and Manette simply responds with, "I can't say"
(52). Even after

Effective Communication And Communication Between The...
Effective communication is fundamental to delivering great patient care in healthcare settings. It is
critically important to create an environment in which clients are able to express their needs and
concerns, especially to alert health providers to unsafe situations. However, communication failures
occur sometimes due to a series of inappropriate verbal and non–verbal communication, which
finally lead to confusion or conflict. There are a number of effective techniques that can be used to
resolve conflicts. This essay will discuss the evidence of lifespan development stages and its
relevance to communication between the doctor and the patient based on the fourth clip. It will also
provide illustrations of two factors that have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Obviously, his behaviours are totally at the opposite characteristics of intimate relationships. For

Language development and communication skills have been changing throughout a person's
lifespan. According to Erikson's psychosocial stage of personality development, doctor and his
patient Sean, both of them are in the development stage of young adulthood, whose age range is
between 21 and 39 (Marcia & Josselson, 2013). Because of more mature communication abilities
and interpersonal skills in adulthood, people usually come to know one another in greater depth.
However, those two people in the clip hold the diametrically opposite attitude towards
communication, the doctor basically in a intimacy state while the patient in isolation. As the doctor
in the intimacy stage, he has the sense of creating a comfortable environment for the patient.
Moreover, the doctor also has the ability to use therapeutic communication skills and tries to acquire
the basic trust with his patient. Obviously, the doctor is successful in a committed relationship. He is
able to open up and communicate well with others. In contrast, the patient isolates himself from the
public and he does not respect or follow his doctor 's advice. Also, he failures to establish effective
communication skills when communicating with his doctor, such as the use of harsh tone of voice.

The Spirit Catches You And You Fall Down By Anne Fadiman...
After reading The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman and The Immortal Life
of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, I have discovered that although both of the books are written
about medical ethics within different cultures and both Fadiman and Skloot side with the patients
being treated, the two authors have different argumentation styles and ways of building their
arguments. Fadiman writes in a Rogerian argumentation style while Skloot is more Aristotelian and
Fadiman uses inductive reasoning while Skloot uses deductive reasoning. The only similarity
between how the authors make their arguments is that both Fadiman and Skloot commit the red
herring logical fallacy. After analyzing the arguments the authors are making and ... Show more

It then occurred to me that this last skill had officially been contradicted by the American
government, which had legally declared her a child abuser" (105). These two different statements
show that Fadiman shows both sides of the story, but subtly sides with the Lees.
While Fadiman uses the Rogerian approach, Skloot uses an Aristotelian approach, which is a more
aggressive style of writing, but much more persuading. To use the Aristotelian approach, you must
state your claim at the very beginning, and then use evidence, the three appeals, and
counterarguments to back up your claim, which is exactly what Skloot does. Skloot starts off the
first couple chapters of the book by describing Henrietta and her family, and how Henrietta did not
deserve what had happened to her. By doing this, Skloot shows her side of the argument and
develops an emotional connection between the readers and Henrietta, which is an example of
pathos. Later on in the story, Skloot interviews Henrietta's cousin Cootie after her death and Cootie
says, "'Everything about Henrietta dead except them cells... You know other countries be buying her
for twenty–five dollars, sometimes fifty? Her family didn't get no money out of it'" (80–81). Skloot
uses this interview to support her claim that Henrietta did not deserve to

Cultural Conflict between Hmong's and American Culture
This entry book" spirit catches you and you fall down" is talking about the cultural conflict between
the Hmong's culture and American culture. These differences are brought by the strong beliefs in the
Hmong's culture, and the difficulties to accept a new culture. There is a lot of
misunderstanding/conflicts between these two cultures in the book. Usually, when the doctors are
trying to convince the Lee's family about Lia's treatments, the Lees are stuck in their ways and really
hard to accept what the doctors have to say about their beloved daughter. They believe in their own
ways, even if it is helpful or not. They refuse to accept the doctors' ideas, and because the treatments
that the doctors give are based on the scientific experiences, so the doctors believe that the Hmong's
ideas are unreasonable or even stupid .However, when the culture conflicts face the love, these
cultural differences become meaningless, which lead me to think that love is the only way that bring
these cultures to connect.
The Hmong cultural/religious belief in shamanistic animism claim that wicked spirits are
continually searching human souls, mostly those of defenseless or unappreciated children. For
Hmong culture, epilepsy is known as qaug dab peg which means, "the spirit catches you and you fall
down" in English (Fadiman 1997), which epileptic invasions are seen as affirmation of the
epileptic's capability to enter and stay temporarily into the spirit world (unconsciousness). In Hmong

Doctors Make Mistakes: A Commentary On Medical Errors
Doctors Make Mistakes
In Dr. Goldman's article "Doctors Make Mistakes: A Commentary on Medical Errors" (TedTalk) he
asserts the doctors are reluctant to admit making errors. Doctors are human so they make errors but
they are reluctant to admit them. Dr. Goldman states that a culture of denial and shame exists in the
medical community. He further asserts that the culture is pervasive within the medical profession
and that it makes doctors afraid to come forward. However, there may be another explanation that
explains why doctors are reluctant to admit making errors in their medical practice. Economics and
hubris are just two of these alternate explanations. Being a doctor carries with it an assumption of
affluences. Doctors make money. A look at an average doctor's bill will verify this claim.
Additionally, individual doctor's labs, pharmacies, specialists, and hospitals all bill independently
for the same treatment or visit therefore, there is an obvious, and predominate financial incentive to

When Doctors Should Have Taken Away Essay
How would you feel if your doctor was a criminal that was still allowed to practice medicine? Or a
Nazi doctor that did terrible things to Jews? What about someone who has had three botched brain
surgeries within three months? All of these situations have actually occurred. Therefore, when
doctors get their medical license taken away, they shouldn't be able to get it back. In a court trial,
they have to be found guilty of the crime they committed, to get their license revoked. For example,
if doctors have to go to court, three basic things can happen with their medical license. First, it can
be taken away. Second, it can be suspended for a period of time. Finally, they can keep it and go on
probation with certain restrictions. When on probation, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We have always been told to give people second chances, well when does that stop? What line do
people have to cross to not get a second chance? A mistake could cost a life, or permanently change
one life or several lives. In the case of Dennis Quaid, it could have taken both his twins lives. The
twins had to be treated with heparin and were supposed to be given 10 mL instead received 10,000
mL, that is 1,000 times the needed amount. The hospital stated later that nobody checked the dosage
at the supplier or the pediatric center. This is only one example of how mistakes happen when
protocols are not followed. Should the doctors and pediatricians get a second chance, what if this
happened and they didn't realize it in time? The doctors didn't end up losing their licenses, but the
hospital was sued for $750,000. The twins could have died or suffered permanent damage.
Obviously, more could have been done to prevent this accident. The doctors, nurses and other
medical professionals have to be held to higher standards when lives are on the line.

Characters In Charles Dickens's A Tale Of Two Cities
Characters are crucial to all books, novels, articles, and other pieces of literature. Their
characteristics, actions, personalities, and looks allow an author to create any story he or she can
dream of with the use of unique characters. Charles Dickens creates a powerful story with the use of
his characters in A Tale of Two Cities. Some of his characters are more important than others, but
none of them go unnoticed and none of them are unnecessary. Dickens refrains from using complex
characters, therefore making them easy to understand and relate to. The development of each of his
characters is clear and evident. Theme is also important to a story; without theme, there would be no
moral to a story. Alongside the development of the characters, Charles Dickens creates a very
powerful theme in this novel. The theme in A Tale of Two Cities is the need for sacrifice. Dickens
uses three specific characters to present this theme. A different story is told through each character
and Dickens uses them in three unique ways. Charles Dickens develops the characters of Doctor
Manette, Charles Darnay, and Sydney Carton to display the theme of the need for sacrifice.
Charles Dickens builds Doctor Manette's character by first explaining his background, which

Doctor Mengele's Two Experiments: An Analysis
without the women knowing (282). To put it another way not a single prisoner was asked permission
of experimentation (277). Although the death camps were specifically for experimentation and the
killing off of Jews some prisoners would get lucky if they had a certain ability such as nursing or
medical experience. Some prisoners would lie about their experience just to get out of experiments
and their certain death (278). As the prisoners filed in, being asked questions of whether or not they
had any experience in medicine, what their race was and any other questions soldiers may ask them,
there would be yelling and screaming and the occasional gunfire from a soldier to the body of an
uncooperative prisoner. Yet some readers may challenge the view that this was to keep order, while
others may think this is just an easier way to get rid of weak races (285). Racial hygiene was the
main goal of these experiments. According to Annas and Grodin, three laws were generated to
maintain racial perfection, they are the Sterilization Law, the Nuremberg Law and the Euthanasia
Operation (20). These laws are important because they show what type of guidelines the Nazis

Theme of Resurrection in Charles Dickens’s Book, A Tale of...
Robespierre, the dictator of the Committee of Public Safety during the Reign of Terror once said,
"Terror is nothing other than justice, prompt, severe, inflexible." If terror is justice, would 30,000
men and women across France have lost their lives during the Reign of Terror? In Charles Dickens's
book, A Tale of Two Cities, Dickens used the injustice in the French Revolution and the corruption
in societies of that time to show the theme of resurrection along with many other themes. In the
novel, the heroes and heroine uses sacrifice to resurrect an important person in their lives. However,
through the process of resurrecting another, some characters also resurrected themselves. The two

The term resurrection means rising from the dead and in a way, Doctor Manette was raised revived
from the Bastille, which symbolizes his grave. Doctor Manette was successfully resurrected, as
shown by his actions in the following chapters. In Book Two, the theme of resurrection became even
more prominent as the author introduces new characters into the novel. The theme is first shown in
the second chapter of the book through the trial of Charles Darnay, one of the main characters in the
novel. In the trial, Charles Darnay was accused of being a spy for the Americans during the time of
the American Revolution. He was to be found guilty had not Sydney Carton, the novel's greatest
hero, saved him from a death sentence. By showing how the similarities between Darnay and
himself, Sydney Carton destroyed one of the witnesses' statements. This showed the theme of
resurrection because Carton had recalled Darnay to life when he was on the brink of death. If Carton
had not saved Darnay, he was sure to have been found guilty by the jury and sentenced to death. For
the first time, the readers were introduced to Sydney Carton, a lawyer who was, in the public's eye,
nothing but a lazy drunk who has never amounted to anything as shown in Charles Darnay's trial.
However, in Book Two, Dickens showed Carton to be a very intelligent man but had wasted his life

Determination In William Carlos Williams The Use Of Force
In William Carlos Williams' story The Use of Force, a resolute doctor takes an unconventional
course of action and lets his frustration fuel his drive as he attempts to diagnose a very stubborn
little girl with a life–threatening illness. The antagonist of the story, Matilda, portrays a persevering
young girl with a secret, a secret she is determined to keep. Point of view makes a serious impact in
the complexity of this story. While experiencing this story through the Doctors eyes, we are able to

longing for muscular release are the operatives. One goes on to the end" (William 1336) then begins
to question his own actions, yet can't seem to convince himself to accept defeat. With ongoing
determination, the doctor gives one last "assault" and "overpowered the child's neck and jaws. (He)

Finally, the doctor has succeeded. A feeling of attainment overwhelms the doctor as he uncovers the

two characters. While the reader is clearly able to experience the doctor's frustrations and follow his
determination to defeat Matilda, they are also able to grasp her frustrations towards the doctor. After

Character Analysis Of Doctor Manette
In the unabridged text of A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens, Doctor Manette is a dynamic
character who changes from weak to independent proving recovery is possible. This novel takes the
reader on a journey throughout the French Revolution by using the connections of characters living
in two different cities. Doctor Manette is a rescued prisoner who moves in with his daughter. Along
the way, they learn how to support one another and survive the chaos of the revolution. Doctor
Manette must strengthen himself in order to survive during this time. In the beginning, he starts off
relying on his daughter, Lucie Manette. In the nighttime, "Ladybird has learnt to know then that his
mind is walking up and down... She hurries to him, and they go on together..." (74). This establishes
Doctor Manette's needs because his mind is focused on being in prison and he needs to recover.
When Doctor Manette gets in these small fits, Lucie will walk back and forth in the halls to help
him. He is fragile and needs the support from his daughter. These fits could last anywhere from a
few hours to nine days. As the story continues, Doctor Manette found ways to cope so they did not
happen as frequently. One way was dexterously fixing shoes. "In the morning, he was up betimes,
and went straight to his bench and to work" (151). This exhibits Doctor Manette recovering because
putting his mind to work during an episode allowed his memories of prison to vanish. Without the

In this case AMH has requested the SWOB to responded and recover organs for transplant. Once the
brain death diagnosis is made the attending doctor does not have any more contact with the patient.
This prevents the conflict of interest question from being raised.
The responding organ bank, as well as the centers that receive the organs for transplant, provide on–
call doctors to assist in the recovery process. The hospital however maintains control of the patient.
This chain of command is for the protection of all involved in the recovery and transplant process.
In this situation the organ bank was challenging the diagnosis of brain death made by a member of
the professional staff of AMH. Not only was there a challenge but it was being made by some one
other then a doctor. Only a doctor can pronounce a patient dead. So here was another dilemma in
that there was a challenge to the doctor's diagnosis being made by a nurse. This in it self goes
against the State Nursing Rules for licensure. Nurses are not allowed to diagnosis nor practice
medicine.
The transplant coordinator nurse needed the support of the organ bank's medical staff. The organ
bank's medical staff was not on scene and thus had to take the word of the transplant coordinator.
In this case the transplant coordinator could have just continued with the recovery and not said
anything. The coordinator could have

shows, one can view them as polar opposites. However, both the British television shows share
exceedingly similar qualities in their plot and characteristics of the main leads and their companions

How To Write A Defining Moment Essay

  • 1. How To Write A Defining Moment Essay It was a sunny April afternoon. I was at the small, but beautiful green park that looked like one you would see in movies. I was with my friend and my brother. I was just being my 7 year old second grade self when life decided to throw a curveball at me. We were playing tag, and my friend was it. I was sitting at the top of the slide that I had been told many times to be careful on. My brother was hiding in the little dirt hole at the end of the grey metal slide that was rusting underneath. Thinking Please don't make me be it. . I leaned over the edge letting my feet dangle over it. I saw her climbing up the steep stairs that lead to the top where I was sitting. I knew that I was faster and if I had to I could run away. "Hey I see you up there!" she shouted climbing faster and faster and getting closer and closer. "No you don't," I giggled. Then I turned around and began to lift my leg back onto the slide when I felt a push and my friend saying "Tag! You're it" and felt myself slip over the edge. From what felt like forever I hit the ground with a loud THUD! I felt pain shoot into my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It felt like I had just gotten home but 8 hours later I was back in the ER room. I had to put on a gown. I walked down the hall in my gown with my parents to my operating room. When we got there I was told to lay on the table which had white paper over it. This room had a lot of metal tools and the pink wrap for my cast. I smelt just like the first room I had been in but it smelt like a lot of different. cleaning supplies. They put a gas mask thing on me and told me to count back from one hundred. So I lay there getting sleepier counting 99,98,97. I don't remember saying the rest but when I woke up there was a pink cast on my right arm. The doctors gave me donut and some ... Yellow Fever Compare And Contrast Ava Schwartz Yellow fever compare and contrast In 1793 Philadelphia suffered from a deadly disease that spread all through the town; it was called yellow fever. The Philadelphia Doctors and the French doctors were attempting to treat yellow fever. The doctors had many ways to try to fix this, but they did not have the technology we do today. Yellow fever occurred 1793. The outbreak happened in Philadelphia. This sad event that killed many people was all because of infected mosquitoes. They came over with the ill refuges. About 2,000 to 5,000 people died. All in all, this was one of the one of the worst things to occur in history There is so much that the French and the Philadelphia doctors had ... Analyzing Erikson's Psychosocial Stages Of Human Development Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial stages, is considered a significant concrete basis for understanding human progression and development (Arnold, 2016) This essay will identify two characters' lifespan development stages from Erik Erickson's theory, and further explain the relevance of the identified stages in accordance with the communication used between the pair. From this communication further identifying and describing meta–communication factors that influenced the interpretation of the effective communication. In the clip of the two characters Sean and the doctor, there are two factors that contributed to conflict that will be identified and discussed. This lack of self–awareness is apparent, in his body language, verbal, and nonverbal communication and personality traits, conceivably a factor causing additional anxiety in this situation, relates to Sean's insecurities, is the environment of a hospital setting, were Sean has no control. Erickson's lifespan development stages are vital to the way the two characters Sean and the doctor have communicated. Because both characters are at two various stages they both communicate different. Sean for example is displaying negative factors of communication and this is resulting from his psychosocial behaviour. This presenting stage of Sean entails communication that is immature and appropriate for a small child having a tantrum, arguing with the doctor on what he thinks his best interests are, He does not have the correct decision making tools to communicate efficiently for theoretical development stage. Sean's communication is aggressive, hostile and destructive. he is undeveloped and naive arguing with the doctor on what his welfare should involve. • 7. The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child,... 'The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures' is a book written in 1997 by the author Anne Fadiman. This book is based on a true story of the life of a Hmong child, Lia Lee who is epileptic. She suffers from numerous grand mal seizures and eventually she becomes vegetative for the remainder of her life. The intention of this book, however, is not Lia's condition, but to highlight the problems that exist between the two cultures and the constant battles that Lia's doctors and parents face due to the cultural barriers that exist between them. This is not just only a story of an ill child but about the more diverse battle between Eastern and Western medicine and how each view and treat patients in such different ways. In this essay the different health–seeking strategies used during Lia's illness, the contrasting views between Lia's parents and the American healthcare professionals and the theories of illness causation will be discussed. The different views held by American healthcare professionals and Lia's parents are clearly displayed in this story. There are several different theories of illness causation identified in the book. From the very beginning, the reason Lia's epileptic seizures started are different between her parents and doctors. Her doctors believe the scientific rationale and they try and decode the information to find the cause (Helman, 2002). They test Lia's blood and give her several ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Half of the patients will get the new drug and half will get traditional Prozac. Neither the doctors nor the patients will know who is getting which drug. Only two test supervisors will know who is getting what. These tests will last about 18 months. Each doctor will see 20 patients initially, though it is expected some patients will drop out over time. Each patient will be be coming in twice a month for a checkup and interviews with their doctor. The drugs will be dispersed in a generic bottle by the two supervisors one of whom is a pharmacist. To track this study, the hospital will need a database. It will need to track patients' information from their first screening through each of their interviews. In particular, they are looking at whether the patient seems more depressed or less, what their appetite is like, are they sleeping, and what kind of activities they are engaged in, if any. Also, they will be looking for specific physical side effects such as rashes, high blood pressure, irregular heart rhythms, or liver or kidney problems. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 11. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Universal Healthcare System Every healthcare system in existence has advantages and disadvantages. Each healthcare system benefits different populations. The universal healthcare system, however, is often believed to be one of the best healthcare systems in the world. It is questionable why this is presumed because this system has a number of flaws that creates challenges for doctors, families, and communities. Many people can find themselves frustrated due to long waiting lists and the seemingly apathetic work of physicians when it comes to the care of their patients. A previous 5–year resident of Canada experienced the challenges of the universal healthcare system first hand. In an interview, she declared that "if someone needed to go to the doctor they had to plan ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This has created a shortage of physicians within these rural areas, leaving many patients without a primary physician. Bazuik lived in Ontario for the five years she was in Canada. The closest big city being Toronto, seven hours away. During this time, she had two different physicians. She recalled, "we did have a family physician, but some people did not and they were on a waiting list" (Bazuik). These citizens are a part of the "1.5 million Ontarians (or 12 percent of that province's population) [that] can't find family physicians" (Grazter). Outside of this province there are places all across Canada with the same issues. This lack of patient care is impacting citizens to stay in these areas and even Canada. Universal health care causes a chain of reactions within Canada. Before it begins to impact patients and families, the doctors are affected causing the most influential outcomes within the country. A survey done found that 55 per cent of doctors reported that their practices are being influenced by government–driven policies rather than evidence–based clinical medicine and 70 per cent of doctors reported that they are feeling attacked or vilified by the Canadian government (Gill). These are a selected number of reasons that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Comparison of Two Hospital Dramas: Casualty and ER Essay Comparison of Two Hospital Dramas: Casualty and ER This essay will compare the two hospital dramas, Casualty and ER. Casualty is a British hospital drama. It is shown on BBC1 at 8:05 on a Saturday evening .It has been one of the biggest and most popular hospital dramas ever made in Britain. The fact that it's lasted over ten series, has been sold to many countries around the world, and it still manages to pull in big audiences speaks for itself. The series is set in the fictional town of Holby, and is set in the hospital, Holby A+E. ER, on the other hand, is an American based hospital drama. It is shown in America on NBC, at 10:00 on a Thursday night and also in Britain on E4, at 9:30 on a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Disputes between doctors and nurses arise. The use of technical language is used a lot to make the viewers respect the doctors for what they are doing and make the program seem more realistic. The viewers also treat them as professionals. Doctors and nurses home life often affects their work. A doctor or nurse often has a hidden secret, which could affect his/her work. A junior doctor often disagrees with a senior doctor in a life or death situation, sometimes the junior doctor is right, but sometimes s/he is wrong. To be successful over a long period of time and keep the same amount of audiences, though, the writers have to develop the conventions and change them slightly. They may make them more detailed. This, as the popularity and ratings show for the two programmes, works and in my mind the two programmes are still as good as when they first started, around ten series ago. In order to pull big audiences the two programmes use fairly attractive doctors and nurses (which, in reality is very unlikely). To pull a mix of races, the doctors and nurses, in the two shows, are of mixed race. The writers know that this will bring a bigger audience to the show. For example. If a black doctor or nurse is used, this will attract a black audience. I think that this is very successful and attracts a larger amount of people than it would if only white doctors

  • 16. Is It A Right Or Wrong? There comes a time when sometimes you feel more right than someone else. Your evidence can be true to prove a point, but also someone else 's can be true too and just have a different approach to it. This may result in a disagreement over who has the best way to do it. The world is filled with different people, which will result in multiple ways to do certain things even if the facts are the same. Sometimes we get into arguments with people over the simplest stuff because of the things we believe or think are morally right based on our culture or facts that we are taught. It's a part of life and it will happen. To me, facts are the evidence or information given to prove that something is true. It's how we face reality, by having something ... Basil Rauch, disagrees with Beard 's argument saying that " America did not know of any attack in advance. It, however, knew that there would be an attack somewhere. America had made some efforts to challenge Japan to take the first shot, (Casanova313)." He 's saying that this had nothing to do with the raw material and that American knew that there would be a possibility of something happening, but not this. Another historian, Roberta Wohlster looked at this attack in a different way, not paying a lot of attention to if the government needed an attack on Japan, but the knowledge about the attack before it happened. Wohlster concluded, "America, in fact, had received enough warning and it almost obvious that Japan was to attack. They, however, chose to ignore the evidence, (Casanova313)." She believes they knew about and didn't want to do anything. Her point of view is similar to Beard, who also thought the US knew that the attack from Japan would occur. These viewpoints change as years go by due to new information coming in, which causes that change in perspective. An example of this is from John Toland, an American writer, and historians, stating, "...that the navy knows of the attack days before the attack, which meant that the president had some knowledge of it, (Casanova313)." Although there were no cures, there were treatments. There were two types of doctors back in this time; the French doctors and the American. Mosquitos are the cause of this. They (the mosquitos) got infected by the refuges. The mosquitos spread the yellow fever to mankind. This epidemic killed a couple thousand people. The Doctors were the only people who could treat this bilious fever. The doctors had some similar tactics or ways to treat. First of all, both of the doctors truly cared for there patients. Evidently, in the second to last paragraph, it read that "the "French Cure" is keeping their patients alive" and for the Philadelphian it reads "they had always cared for their patients". The second comparison I can make is to feed the patient's lots of liquids. For example, in paragraph 3 it says for Philadelphian "Drink wine and take cold baths" and for French is reads "Dr. Deveze advocating giving patients plenty of fluids". Last but not least, the two doctors (French and Philadelphian) both give out pain relievers. In paragraph 2 it says, "Take a salt of tartar in lime juice and barley water and laudanum (pain killer)" and in paragraph 12 it also says, " Pain medications and fever–reducing medications were used to relieve symptoms of fever and aching". ... Kant's Doctor-Placebo Case Study If Kant were correct by saying that his formulas all connect and have similar and the same results, in his Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals, the humanity formulation would produce the same result as universal formulation , but this is not the case. Kant argues that the differences between the formulas are only subjective , meaning they have different connotations – one is directed towards universal morality and the other humanity morality. However, he sees that there is no objective practical differences between the formulas, which imply that the formulas end results, would parallel one another; they'd be the same either both rational or both not. After researching online about wasted recourses in health care in United states I was in shock. According to the Institute of Medicine, about 30 percent of U.S. health care spending (about $750 billion) was wasted in 2009 on unnecessary services, excessive administrative costs, fraud and other problems (Shalby & Rolfes, 2012). One of the examples that got my attention was a 72–year–old male that suffers from diabetes. Role of Cross-Cultural Misunderstanding in Ruining Lia's Life Role of Cross–cultural Misunderstanding in Ruining Lia's Life Lia is born of a loving Hmong family, and just three months into her life, begins to reveal epileptic symptoms. Chiropractic Myths When it comes to chiropractic, the general public have come a long way with their basic understanding of what they actually do, but there are still some myths and mystery which continue to surround this profession. There are two fundamental differences between medical doctors and doctors of chiropractic. A standard doctor is a general practitioner (GP) who applies medical knowledge to treat patients when a symptom presents itself. A chiropractor is a specialist who corrects spinal alignment with highly specialised manipulation techniques, encouraging the body's well–being, with a holistic philosophy. Here are a couple of common misconceptions. Myth 1 – Is a Chiropractor a REAL Doctor? Once a doctor of chiropractic achieves their degree, their learning institution grants them a DC or Doctor of Chiropractic degree. This takes several years and requires lengthy study. They are licensed health care providers and follow a similarly fierce and gruelling medical curricula to that of a degree in medicine. In fact, they spend more hours in the classroom than their medical counterparts. As with medical doctors, prior to graduation, supervised residency work is required with real patients and these are undertaken in a clinical environment. Doctor Manette was first terrified of the world and needed people to guide him through daily tasks. After being released from prison after almost two decades in pure isolation, all people and items of the world were unknown and strange. To cope with his anxiety, the Doctor turned to shoemaking, working for countless hours in the Defarge's tavern. Meeting his daughter Lucie helped greatly decrease this peculiar behavior, but the Doctor still did not have a sense of self. When asked if he would like to have a life similar to what he had before he was imprisoned, the Doctor responded, "'I hope you care to be recalled to life? And the old answer: 'I can't say'" (Dickens 57). It is clear that the Doctor still believes and sees flashbacks from his horrors in prison, and therefore does not know otherwise from it. The Role of Resurrection in A Tale of Two Cities Essay Robespierre, the dictator of the Committee of Public Safety during the Reign of Terror once said, "Terror is nothing other than [just], prompt, severe, [and] inflexible." If terror is just, would 30,000 men and women across France have lost their lives during the Reign of Terror? In Charles Dickens's book, A Tale of Two Cities, Dickens uses the injustice in the French Revolution and the corruption in societies of that time to show the theme of resurrection along with many other themes. In the novel, the heroes and heroine use sacrifices to resurrect someone important in their lives. During the trial, Charles Darnay is accused of spying for the Americans during the American Revolution. By showing the similarities between Darnay and himself, Sydney Carton destroys one of the witnesses' statements. This shows again the theme of resurrection because Carton recalls Darnay to life from a near–death experience. Through Darnay's resurrection, readers are also introduced to Sydney Carton, a lawyer who is, in the public's eye, nothing but a lazy drunk who has never amounted to anything as shown in Charles Darnay's trial. This description later gets contradicted once Dickens shows Carton to be a rather intelligent man who wasted his life by working for others rather than showing his worth to the public. Despite being set well after the end of the Civil War, the struggle between the black and white races is far from over. The white race insists on maintaining complete control in every aspect of society, including personal matters. They are constantly demanding that the black community serve them. On the other end, the black race is struggling to survive the harsh conditions the white–dominated society imposes on them. Throughout the novel, Chesnutt reminds us of the ongoing battle between the two races. At the same time, Chesnutt explores the effect this has on various members in society. The youngest two characters in the novel, Dodie and Doctor Miller's son, exemplify the conditions and consequences for the black and white races. Although they seem to be secondary characters in On the Marrow of Tradition, both Dodie and Doctor Miller's son play a crucial role in the representation of their respective races. It does not take long to ascertain the striking resemblance between the two children in the novel. The novel opens with the birth of Dodie, the only son of one of the most successful white characters in the novel, Major Carteret. • 40. Doctor Manette, Charles Darnay, And Sydney Carton's A Tale... In his historical fiction novel, A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens uses the experiences of Doctor Manette, Charles Darnay, and Sydney Carton to develop the theme that resurrection is possible. Doctor Manette introduces the theme of resurrection through his experience of being recalled to life. The first book title of the novel is "Recalled to Life". Right away, Dicken's expresses this theme through the very first words of the novel so he can use it throughout the rest of it. The title is referring to Doctor Manette and his resurrection, as it is the most prominent, if not only, resurrection present. If one is to be resurrected, they need to be resurrected from somewhere, and in this instance, that place would be the cell above Monsignor Defarge's shop, who was the Doctor's close friend. The description of the Doctor shows him as an old, decrepit, worn down, and broken man. Before, Mr. Lorry mentions someone who has been "buried alive for eighteen years" (20), and it is later revealed that he is talking about the Doctor. Then, after meeting the Doctor and taking him in a carriage, Mr. Lorry refers to the cell as a "grave" and that Doctor Manette has been "dug out", or resurrected. Through Doctor Manette, Dickens shows that even people who have been cast out for years are able to be resurrected. Dickens then leaves the first book as a cliffhanger, as Lorry questions, "would you like to be recalled to life?" and Manette simply responds with, "I can't say" (52). Even after ... Fadiman writes in a Rogerian argumentation style while Skloot is more Aristotelian and Fadiman uses inductive reasoning while Skloot uses deductive reasoning. • 46. Cultural Conflict between Hmong's and American Culture This entry book" spirit catches you and you fall down" is talking about the cultural conflict between the Hmong's culture and American culture. These differences are brought by the strong beliefs in the Hmong's culture, and the difficulties to accept a new culture. There is a lot of misunderstanding/conflicts between these two cultures in the book. Usually, when the doctors are trying to convince the Lee's family about Lia's treatments, the Lees are stuck in their ways and really hard to accept what the doctors have to say about their beloved daughter. They believe in their own ways, even if it is helpful or not. They refuse to accept the doctors' ideas, and because the treatments that the doctors give are based on the scientific experiences, so the doctors believe that the Hmong's ideas are unreasonable or even stupid .However, when the culture conflicts face the love, these cultural differences become meaningless, which lead me to think that love is the only way that bring these cultures to connect. The Hmong cultural/religious belief in shamanistic animism claim that wicked spirits are continually searching human souls, mostly those of defenseless or unappreciated children. For Hmong culture, epilepsy is known as qaug dab peg which means, "the spirit catches you and you fall down" in English (Fadiman 1997), which epileptic invasions are seen as affirmation of the epileptic's capability to enter and stay temporarily into the spirit world (unconsciousness). • 52. Characters In Charles Dickens's A Tale Of Two Cities Characters are crucial to all books, novels, articles, and other pieces of literature. Their characteristics, actions, personalities, and looks allow an author to create any story he or she can dream of with the use of unique characters. Charles Dickens creates a powerful story with the use of his characters in A Tale of Two Cities. Some of his characters are more important than others, but none of them go unnoticed and none of them are unnecessary. Dickens refrains from using complex characters, therefore making them easy to understand and relate to. The development of each of his characters is clear and evident. Theme is also important to a story; without theme, there would be no moral to a story. Alongside the development of the characters, Charles Dickens creates a very powerful theme in this novel. The theme in A Tale of Two Cities is the need for sacrifice. Dickens uses three specific characters to present this theme. A different story is told through each character and Dickens uses them in three unique ways. Although the death camps were specifically for experimentation and the killing off of Jews some prisoners would get lucky if they had a certain ability such as nursing or medical experience. • 56. Theme of Resurrection in Charles Dickens’s Book, A Tale of... Robespierre, the dictator of the Committee of Public Safety during the Reign of Terror once said, "Terror is nothing other than justice, prompt, severe, inflexible." If terror is justice, would 30,000 men and women across France have lost their lives during the Reign of Terror? In Charles Dickens's book, A Tale of Two Cities, Dickens used the injustice in the French Revolution and the corruption in societies of that time to show the theme of resurrection along with many other themes. In the novel, the heroes and heroine uses sacrifice to resurrect an important person in their lives. However, through the process of resurrecting another, some characters also resurrected themselves. The two most important characters that relates to the theme ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The term resurrection means rising from the dead and in a way, Doctor Manette was raised revived from the Bastille, which symbolizes his grave. Doctor Manette was successfully resurrected, as shown by his actions in the following chapters. In Book Two, the theme of resurrection became even more prominent as the author introduces new characters into the novel. The theme is first shown in the second chapter of the book through the trial of Charles Darnay, one of the main characters in the novel. In the trial, Charles Darnay was accused of being a spy for the Americans during the time of the American Revolution. He was to be found guilty had not Sydney Carton, the novel's greatest hero, saved him from a death sentence. By showing how the similarities between Darnay and himself, Sydney Carton destroyed one of the witnesses' statements. This showed the theme of resurrection because Carton had recalled Darnay to life when he was on the brink of death. If Carton had not saved Darnay, he was sure to have been found guilty by the jury and sentenced to death. For the first time, the readers were introduced to Sydney Carton, a lawyer who was, in the public's eye, nothing but a lazy drunk who has never amounted to anything as shown in Charles Darnay's trial. However, in Book Two, Dickens showed Carton to be a very intelligent man but had wasted his life by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Making Medical Decisions As a decision analyst, both the short–form fast–and–frugal decision tree and the 50–item long form of the heart disease decision support tools are great tools for doctors to make medical decisions. However, in a life and death urgent situation, a doctor has to make a decision fast and accurately, he or she will have to rely on their knowledge and various tools to make a sound decision that will impact a patient's life. So, as a decision analyst, putting clinical analysis aside, a doctor will need to decide and compare as to which of these tools can better support and guide them to provide a sound decision. One goes on to the end" (William 1336) then begins to question his own actions, yet can't seem to convince himself to accept defeat. With ongoing determination, the doctor gives one last "assault" and "overpowered the child's neck and jaws. (He) forced the heavy silver spoon back to her teeth and down her throat till she gagged"(Williams 1336). Finally, the doctor has succeeded. A feeling of attainment overwhelms the doctor as he uncovers the two tonsils covered in "membrane". This victory is the final event that ends the conflict between the two characters. • 62. Character Analysis Of Doctor Manette In the unabridged text of A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens, Doctor Manette is a dynamic character who changes from weak to independent proving recovery is possible. This novel takes the reader on a journey throughout the French Revolution by using the connections of characters living in two different cities. Doctor Manette is a rescued prisoner who moves in with his daughter. Along the way, they learn how to support one another and survive the chaos of the revolution. Doctor Manette must strengthen himself in order to survive during this time. In the beginning, he starts off relying on his daughter, Lucie Manette. In the nighttime, "Ladybird has learnt to know then that his mind is walking up and down... She hurries to him, and they go on together..." (74). This establishes Doctor Manette's needs because his mind is focused on being in prison and he needs to recover. When Doctor Manette gets in these small fits, Lucie will walk back and forth in the halls to help him. He is fragile and needs the support from his daughter. These fits could last anywhere from a few hours to nine days. As the story continues, Doctor Manette found ways to cope so they did not happen as frequently. One way was dexterously fixing shoes. "In the morning, he was up betimes, and went straight to his bench and to work" (151). This exhibits Doctor Manette recovering because putting his mind to work during an episode allowed his memories of prison to vanish. Without the focus of skillfully ... On the face of it, the series looks to be like any other. One with lots of monsters, mystery and adventure. Also with the important point of it being another Moffat series to add to his collection (which isn't a terrible collection at that). So, what makes Series 9 that much more gripping, even before it airs? What have got Whovians the world over raving about the series during the tenth anniversary year of the revival? Well in this article, you will find all the answers to that question in six parts, and perhaps more reasons to declare it one of the greatest series yet if it delivers on all aspects. Two–parters ... It was as if in certain episodes he was one way, then the next few he was something else. It was a jumbled characterisation at the time. That is all change this year, as it truly is the time of the Twelfth Doctor. The scripts have been manufactured exactly to the new Doctor's character, which promises more differences, but also more consistency in his character this time around. We will be getting a more identifiable portrayal of the Twelfth Doctor himself. Peter is now far more comfortable in the role, and he will no doubt be giving it the best he has got, which is a lot! He will be sensational, and with trusted companion Clara in a less commanding position this time around. The beauty of the Twelfth Doctor's character will shine ever brighter. • 66. Charles Dickens's Characters In A Tale Of Two Cities Characters play an important role in books, novels, articles, and other pieces of literature. Their characteristics, actions, personalities, and looks allows an author to create any story he or she wants with the use of unique characters. Charles Dickens creates a powerful story with his characters in A Tale of Two Cities. Some of his characters are more important than others, but none of them go unnoticed, and none of them are unnecessary. Dickens does not create complex characters, and each of his characters are easy to understand and connect with. The development of each of his characters is clear and evident. Theme is also important to a story, without theme there would be no moral to a story. Along with the development of characters, Charles Dickens also creates a very powerful theme in this novel. The theme in A Tale of Two Cities is the need for sacrifice. Dickens uses three specific characters to present this theme. Through each character a different story is told, and Dickens uses them in three unique ways. Charles Dickens develops the characters of Doctor Manette, Charles Darnay, and Sydney Carton to display the theme of the need for sacrifice. Charles Dickens builds Doctor Manette's character by first explaining his background, which leads to the theme of the need for sacrifice. Doctor Manette is a kind and forgiving character that has suffered many years in prison because of the St. Evremonde family. Doctor Manette suffers greatly because of the haunting years in prison. In the article "A Tale of Two Cities" the author says, "Manette is mentally ill from his time in prison. He is reunited with his daughter, Lucie, and brought to England, where he slowly begins to recover" (1). Doctor Manette is released after eighteen years and reunites with his daughter, Lucie, in Paris, and he falls in love with her. Lucie becomes her father's source of happiness and his reason for staying healthy. Dickens displays this connection by saying that the sound of Lucie's voice and the touch of her hand benefits Doctor Manette greatly (72). When Doctor Manette has flashbacks from prison, Lucie is the only person that helps him come back to himself. Doctor Manette frantically makes shoes, a hobby he learned in prison, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this case AMH has requested the SWOB to responded and recover organs for transplant. Once the brain death diagnosis is made the attending doctor does not have any more contact with the patient. This prevents the conflict of interest question from being raised. The responding organ bank, as well as the centers that receive the organs for transplant, provide on– call doctors to assist in the recovery process. The hospital however maintains control of the patient. This chain of command is for the protection of all involved in the recovery and transplant process. In this situation the organ bank was challenging the diagnosis of brain death made by a member of the professional staff of AMH. Not only was there a challenge but it was being made by some one other then a doctor. Only a doctor can pronounce a patient dead. So here was another dilemma in that there was a challenge to the doctor's diagnosis being made by a nurse. This in it self goes against the State Nursing Rules for licensure. Nurses are not allowed to diagnosis nor practice medicine. The transplant coordinator nurse needed the support of the organ bank's medical staff. The organ bank's medical staff was not on scene and thus had to take the word of the transplant coordinator. In this case the transplant coordinator could have just continued with the recovery and not said anything. The coordinator could have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He descended down a short staircase and grounded himself among the Dread Doctors by placing his feet apart and crossing his arms. "You haven't gotten your latest yet," Theo pointed out. No one seemed to be paying attention to him. "She was taken by the Satori and–" "We know," the Spectacle Doctor said, a loud hissing noise punctuating the finality in his voice. Theo tossed his next words around in his mind for a minute before annunciating them. "And what about Rebecca?" He was met with no response, but dare he say it, he dreaded to hear one. A Doctor who wasn't facing him breathed out slowly. Another one mimicked the sound, only louder. Theo ground his teeth together, but before he could voice his frustration the last Doctor cut through his thoughts. "Failures." "B–both?" Theo cleared his throat and tried again, embarrassed. "Both? So you're going to kill them both?" "The Unknown Positive is not compatible," the Doctor continued. "The Unknown Negative," the second Doctor corrected. "The Unknown Negative will be disposed of," the Doctor said. "In time." Theo clenched his jaw. "Let me take care of her." His statement was once again met with eerie silence, apart from the occasional drip of something unpleasant from deep within the workshop. Throughout her travels with the Doctor, Rose discovers that the Doctor is missing an essential emotional component that is shared by most of humanity, which of course, is because the Doctor is not human. She often finds herself in a position to show him how to be compassionate (Britton). It is this empathy that makes Rose such a strong character, and makes it easy to see why the Doctor would love her.
