The Old Testament can be very hard for many people to look to for guidance. The difficulty often
comes because the questions they have in today's society may not relate to the Old Testament.
"Much biblical scholarship is narrowly historical–critical and does not seek to draw out the ethical–
theological dimensions of the text." (297) Pastors have the task of relating the Old Testament to
today's problems and it can be quite a challenge. Addressing moral issues is a difficult issue that
pastors are faced with when addressing them through the Old Testament. This article addresses
many factors that contribute to pastors not effectively addressing morals because of the complexity
of relating them to Old Testament context.

Terence E. Fretheim speaks from a perspective that shows the challenges that pastors face in regard

Good News Bible : The Testament And The New Testament
The term "Bible" is an interesting one as it potentially encompasses many different entities. There
are thousands of versions of the Bible, many arranged and presented in a variety of ways. They vary
physically & in content, and as I recently discovered aren 't necessarily Christian. Below I delve into
a rather interesting version of the book published in 1976 by HarperCollins (in conjunction with the
American Bible Society). Good News Bible is a compilation of the Old Testament and the New
Testament in their entirety (the American Bible Society had actually made their version of the New
Testament available a decade prior). This information is made easily available in small print on the
first few pages just as in most relatively modern books. The society was founded in 1816 and its
goal has always been to make the Bible more intelligible. The stories contained within the Good
News Bible don 't deviate from those that most Christians are accustomed to, however, the way
which these stories are conveyed is rather unique. The book is written in simple everyday English
and it is comprehensible to nearly everyone with even the slightest grasp of the language. The basic
elements of the book (including cover, binding, paper, font, headings, maps, paper, illustrations,
chronology, etc.) are all incorporated deliberately and make it apparent that Good News Bible is

helped bring salvation to Jews and Gentiles alike. In order to understand this theme throughout the
New Testament it has to be through the scope of the culture that Jesus was brought in and in of each

under pressure from the Roman Empire. The Gospel's tell of the story of Jesus and how he proved to

of the lessons that He taught the people. The high priests did not enter these rural communities
because they were unsafe in them. Jesus chose twelve disciples to follow Him for two reasons. He
needed someone to continue on the work when He left and also to symbolize the twelve tribes of
Judah. Jesus is part of the Davidic line of kings, so He then exemplifies the King of the Jews. Jesus
proclaiming that He is the King of Jews also resonates the idea that He is the Messiah.

1. The Old Testament consisted of a set of the spiritual text of documentations, which were written
by different people at various times to a different audience. Most of the Old Testament contains
short stories of traditional stories and those stories of distinguish ways God established mankind.
These stories are often told to the people in narrative form, which are guidelines often referred to as
laws, songs, genealogies, and list from these authors that composed the Old Testaments. The
pressing of set documentation is essential because it is the framework for the lives of Gods
followers. The term "Old Testament" originated as a means to express spoken traditions and Gods
creation from that particular era. It is a method of philosophical investigation was designed to
answer the why questions within these spiritual text documentations. These religious
documentations consist of four parts. These four sections include the Old Testaments are the laws,
history, wisdom and prophecy. The laws are a rule of behavior enforced within the community. The
rules are sometimes called "Torah." When analyzing these Torah, these rules were located in the first
five spiritual books of the Bible. For example, in the first Torah in Genesis, it explains the creation,
Noah's Flood, Abraham and Isaac, and Joseph's coats of many colors. However, the laws in Exodus
were in regards to the going out. The going out took about 40 plus years, until the people were lead
to the promise land of God.

Proverbs 25:2 says, "It is God 's privilege to conceal things and the king 's privilege to discover
them." So, I would like to propose that Christians should read the Old Testament to discover the
story and character of God that is concealed within the pages of the Old Testament stories. By taking
a little time to understand the context of the stories in the Old Testament readers can see the
faithfulness, loving nature, and kindness of God. Most times people are dissuaded from reading the
Old Testament books because they assume God is mean and harsh within those pages, but that
simply isn't the truth. God is revealed in every story in the Bible – Old Testament and New
Testament.
The Old Testament is a foundation of one 's understanding of God and His purpose for the world. It
contains the story of creation and original intent for the world. Eden was a place of complete
communion with The Father. We can see in Genesis 3:8 "When the cool evening breezes were
blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden..." that God was
with Adam and Eve, walking among them in Eden. He was there to intimately do life with and
among His people. Sin entered the garden because of their disobedience, and the verse goes on to
say "...So they hid from the Lord God among the trees" (Gen. 3:8, NLT). If we don't understand the
fall, then we don't understand what we lost because of sin. Thus, we wouldn't understand the

Christianity is a religion that is based on the life experiences and teachings of Jesus Christ in the
New Testament. Christianity is the largest religion on Earth, with over two billion followers which
are called Christians. Jesus is believed to be the Son of God and the Savior of Humanity who is

Comparing The Story Of The Old Testament And The New...
Utilizing the understanding of the later definition make is extremely easier to incorporate the
narrative of the Old Testament and the New Testament into one chronicle event moving along the
time line to teach and understand the mission of the church. It follows the events of "knowing the
story" and where the church came from and where it is headed. Clearly the church is not complete as

The letter to the Romans has been one of the icons among the books of the New Testament; the
content of the book of Romans has a very significant importance for its pastoral, theological and

Rom 3:23 says, "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Our physical death is surely a
part of the consequences of our sinful nature, however, Romans 3:23 went deeper, and gave us a
glimpse of our secondary death. God is life and fall short of the glory of God is falling short of life.

Testament. These books offered more messages than biblical history. The four gospels in The New
Testament were written in a time where Jesus was born. He was born to offer hope and salvation to

with God through his son, Jesus. God has still continued to work in mysterious ways and bless those

and making the blind see again. People are able to trust what Jesus has said because he is the Son of

Through studying the Old Testament, there have been several instances that I have come across that
help us better understand who God is. In the Old Testament, the prophet Isaiah states, "Do you not
know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He
will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom" (Isaiah 40:28). Many of the
stories and passages in the Bible allow us to fully grasp who the God is that we serve, and His

captives in Egypt, God saw them and said "I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I

(Exodus 3:7). The Israelites had been crying out to God to rescue them for quite some time, and

to the prophets, leaders, or the nation of Israel, He presents opportunities for obedience in the form
of covenants. Faithfulness is also needed to secure an association with God. Obedience is probably

promises and pacts between God and humanity. I will present evidence from each of the Four

There were eight named writers of the New Testament: Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul,
Peter, James, and Jude. The New Testament was formalized within the early Christian community,
the Church. The Church Fathers were important to the early Church, for they were the ones who had
an important role in the process of the formation of the New Testament, as well as the interpretation
of Scripture. Their objective was to choose those written books which were truly inspired by the
Holy Spirit and best reflected the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, as understood within the
Tradition of the Church.
Jesus Christ selected 12 men from among his early followers to become his closest disciples. After
an intensive discipleship course and following his resurrection from the dead, the Lord fully
commissioned the apostles (Matthew 28:16–2, Mark 16:15) to advance God 's kingdom and carry
the gospel message to the world.
These men became the pioneering leaders of the New Testament church, but they were not without
faults and shortcomings. Interestingly, not one of the chosen 12 disciples was a scholar or rabbi.
They had no extraordinary skills. Neither religious, nor refined, they were ordinary people, just like
you and me.
But God chose them for a purpose–to fan the flames of the gospel that would spread across the face

most Jews and Christians turn to in an effort to justify marriage, committed sexual relations, and
procreation within the marital relationship. Yet, the Bible teaches that the most prominent figure of
the New Testament, Jesus of Nazareth was a staunch practitioner of the celibate lifestyle. As a
partner in the creation of the universe, Jesus Christ would understand the mandate given by God the
Father to populate the earth. The Christian Scriptures are clear that the historical Jesus was well
steeped in knowledge of the Hebrew Scriptures (Luke 2:32–49, John 6:59, Luke 4:15–21) and as a

big scheme of things. First, there are no mention of Jesus having any sort of sexual relations or even

Hebrews 11:27 tells of Moses and his faith in God's sovereignty, "By faith he forsook Egypt, not
fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible." Through the faith of
Moses, God brought down seven plagues, hardened a Pharaoh's heart, parted a sea and lead his
people out of Egypt. Moses, who had never know God, did not have parents or teachers to show him
who God was, put his faith and in and gave his life to God. God instructs Abram to leave his land,
his family and his people, all that Abram knew and go to a different land, and Abram departs to
follow God's instructions. He again follows God's direction to sacrifice Isaac, without question,
faithful in God. God knows his people and his purpose for each before he created them, proving

Youngblood (1998) points out that in our day much attention is being given what is called "situation
ethics" or "the morality of relativism". We in modern times continue to change the interpretation of

My son is one whom I treasure and feel responsibility for. I want to protect him and teach his in

It has become a theme for people to refer more to the New Testament than to the Old Testament,
when trying to answer issues about their daily lives. This is becoming a trend because it appears to

Brueggemann states, "The Torah occupies the primary place of authority, significance, and influence
in the mediation of Yahweh's purpose, presence, and power to Israel." Through this quote it is seen
how important the Torah is to us, it holds the laws that we are to follow as God's people. The Ten
Commandments are something that is taught to everyone that attends Sunday school, these are a list
of things that God gave to Moses that we should not do in order to fully follow God in our lives. I

last words God ever wrote to man is recorded on the pages of the New Testament. In the Old

but the full and final revelation came through Jesus Christ in the New Testament (Jensen.15).The

The New Testament The second part of the Christian Bible is the sacred books of the New
Testament. It is the recordings of Jesus and his earliest followers' lives and teachings. The New
Testament only covers several decades unlike the Old Testament, which covers thousands of years.
The earliest manuscript we have containing all the books of the New Testament comes from 300
A.D however it included books that are not in the Bible today (Schenck, 2010, p. 27). "The Council
of Carthage in A.D. 397 gave the list official approval, accepting these twenty–seven writings as the
New Testament" (Schenck, 2010, p. 28). The New Testament is not a single book written by one
man, but, rather, twenty–seven books written in Greek by at least eight different inspired men of
God from various places. For these books to even be considered part of the New Testament
Scriptures, they had to have been verified that they were the inspired work of an apostle or a
prophet. There are at least four different kinds of genres used in the New Testament, possibly more
(Schenck, 2010, p. 22). The Gospels which are composed of the first four books, Matthew, Mark,
Luke, and John. Each of these books contains important events and teachings from Jesus' life on
earth. The fifth, the book of Acts reads like a history book with detailed, orderly, accounts of the

The Old Testament is the largest part of the bible nestled behind the leather binding in the front of
the book. Unlike most books, told from one–person or even two this is comprised of multiple, some
stories even having two different versions in another point of view; over time it has become a large
collection of ancient texts written and re–written by different authors and editors over the many
years. The stories show the ancient Israelites, they show the laws, and rituals, which make up their
religion and the small embers, which will one day, turn to a flame that is Christianity. The Jewish
people view these stories as collected in what they call the Torah, is the collection for what makes

The Bible is a collection of stories and teachings made up of two parts, the Old Testament and the
New Testament, as well as the Pentateuch or the first five books of the Bible. The Pentateuch and
Old Testament follow the days of creation, the stories of Moses, and all that happened before Jesus
was born. The New Testament follows the life, teachings, and death of Jesus. Before the Bible was
written around 3000 years ago, it was told through narratives, poetry, and songs. Much like
fairytales, which are a non–religious way of teaching kids to be safe, such as in Hansel and Gretel,
making smart decisions, such as in Sleeping Beauty, or to not talk to strangers, such as in Little Red

Shakespeare, each of his characters, though quite dramatic, all have a tragic flaw that often aides in
the failures of the character but each tragic flaw is extremely human. Many times the Bible or the

Prophet! What is a prophet exactly? A prophet in the Old Testament was a person from various
backgrounds, who God used to communicate his message to the world. Going to church as a child I
always heard that in the Old Testament all prophets were men. That isn't exactly the case. Even
though a majority of them were men, there were also women that were also prophets. The term for a
female prophet is Prophetesses. God gave some women approval to speak to his people, but just like
men they used their authority for good but also some evil. Five women were mentioned in the Old

She is mentioned in Nehemiah 6:14. Noadiah wasn't really a true prophetess of god. Though it is not
known if she was a real prophetess, it seems important to speak of her because she was called
powerful and a prophetess in the bible. She was a Jewess who confederated with Tobiah, Sanballet,
and other false prophets. Noahdiah was basically a two–faced woman, she pretended to be friends
with Nehemiah and befriended the Gentile devils. Later Nehemiah would become a foe to Noadiah
instead of a friend. In Nehemiah 6:14, Nehemiah says, "My God, think thou upon Tobiah and
Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the
prophets, that would have put me in fear." This gives us the sense that Noadiah was not nice and
Nehemiah saw through her. Noadiah attempted to stop God's will for Israel. She opposed to
Nehemiah restoring the Jerusalem wall. Noadiah was head of a Jerusalem based Prophetic guild and

Paul explained to the Ephesians that when the fullness of time came, God sent His Son into the
world to make known His will for the salvation of humanity. (Ephesians 1: 9–10) However,
according to Paul, that plan had extended from the foundation of the world. "According as he hath
chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame
before him in love." (Ephesians 1: 4) And, it is mentioned in the very first book of the Bible. Some
say that it can be traced back to the creation in the sentence that God placed upon the serpent; that in
the words "He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel," there is an intimation that God
had in mind the plan of salvation that would eventually come in its completeness, And that might be
so. We do know that it goes as far back as Abraham, because Paul said that was what He was talking
about. (Galatians 3:16) Moses said, "The Lord our God will raise up unto you a prophet like unto

The term Son of Man is translated differently by the prophets, apostles, and people of the Old
Testament when compared to how the term is viewed in the New Testament. In analyzing how the
terms are perceived during these times, it becomes possible to trace the theme of the Son of Man,
and how it was viewed in the Old Testament, to how the Son of Man has been viewed in the New
Testament. In observing these differences, one can clearly see the term had similar meanings, but
was represented in a different fashion, depending on the peoples and circumstances of the time
period. In analyzing these occasions in which the term Son of Man is used throughout the two
testaments, it will become clear as to their intended, and actual interpretations.
In the Old Testament, it is Ezekiel who is the 'protagonist, ' in a sense. This becomes apparent,
because Ezekiel plays such a vital role to the message behind the books of the Old Testament.
Ezekiel was a man as God had intended, and can also be viewed as the coming savior in the Old
Testament (Morris Henry, Ph.D., 1–3). The importance of Ezekiel is soon observed, and as noticed
in chapter 2, verse 1 of the book Ezekiel of the Old Testament, God commands Ezekiel to stand, so
that he may be commissioned as a prophet for the peoples of Israel (UcoG,

Paul, who is the author of Ephesians, is writing to the church in Ephesus and possibly surrounding
Asia minor cities. He wrote the book of Ephesians sometime between AD 60–62 when he was
imprisoned in Rome (3:1, 4:1, 6:20). The letter was taken to Ephesus by Tychicus (vs 6:21–22). Paul
knew that the Christians in Ephesus and the surrounding towns were growing and had heard about
their faith so he addresses the Ephesians as a corporate body (Hultgren, 2015). At the time, Ephesus

Context Literary: Most of Paul's letters are written as expositions which are carefully reasoned
explanations of his letter and well thought out words that are crucially placed to build agreement and
action among the people (Hendricks and Hendricks, 2007, p. 224). However, this particular passage
of Ephesians 3: 14–21 is a prayer among his exposition.
Right before this passage, Paul pleads with the Ephesians that the church needs to be made known
of the "authorities in the heavenly places" (Ephesians 3:10) so that they may have confidence in
their faith (vs 12). Paul starts verse 14 with "For this reason" showing his readers that this is why he
is adding a prayer in the middle of his discussion.

Paul uses this interchange in prayer as a Chiasm which is a list of ideas that are structured to parallel
each other in certain lines such as line A, line B, line C, line B, line A (Duvall and Hays, 2012, p.
100). He starts the prayer out with Praise to the Father with words such as "I bow my knees before
the Father" (vs 14). He then explains God's great power in verses 15 and 16. Finally, he states his
purpose of the prayer in verse 17 with words such as "so that". In verses 17–19 he tells us the
purpose which is three–fold: that Christ may dwell in our hearts, to know the love of Christ, and to
be filled with fullness of God. In verse 20 he goes back to talking about God's great power and in
verse 21 he closes the prayer with more

The Old Testament
The purpose of the Old Testament is to give historical background as well as to give prophesies to
the world and also to look towards the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus came to
transform and replace old laws with his sacrifice and free gift. He took the Mosaic divorce law and
the law regarding the Sabbath. Jesus was tested by the Pharisees and he won every time. He knew
how to answer, many times in the form of a question, parable or story; he always had a response. I
believe that the strict view of inerrancy is the truth. The Bible should be taken literally. Because God
is omnipresent and omniscient, he know the future and spoke through the Old Testament writers. He
knew that the Sabbath needed to be kept holy and that it would benefit the people. He also knew that
divorce was a wide spread issue in the time of Mose and would continue to be an issue. Both of
these topics were and are common in the time of the Old Testament as well as today. This is no
surprise to God. He knew that many issues discussed in the Old Testament and in the time of Jesus
would still be a great concern today. This is hard for humans to understand that God is all–knowing;
but being human we make the same mistakes; this is why we still have many issues from before
Christ. As humans, we are fallen and cannot live perfect lives; we will always sin and the Bible is
the book where we see God's guidance and truth on these issues. God could have created the world

The Testament Of The New Testament
The New Testament is known as the second major part of the Christian biblical cannon. The New
Testament, unlike the Old Testament is responsible for spreading Christianity Theology to the world.
The book was written by the disciples of Jesus. When one hear of the book, one's mind think about
the apostle Paul, since he is the one responsible for a large portion of the book and is one of the most
studied out of the apostles. Paul has written: First Thessalonians, Galatians, Philemon, Romans and
many more. However, with the dates of these gospels going back to million years ago; no one can
truly attribute all the Pauline epistles to him. Titus, Ephesians, and First and Second Timothy are all
in question of the authorship being Paul or one his followers which has been seen as a common
theme in history. Paul's main purpose for writing these letters was to educate the communities about
how to obtain a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. There were other letters that he wrote that
were foreshadows of the apocalypse and destruction and one letter that he wrote on behalf of a slave
(Letter to Philemon). Galatians is one of those letters were he is writing to the citizens of Galatia
and trying to help the gentile Christians one again. Paul achieves this by recalling events of his past
life, preaching the gospel that was giving him to by Jesus, and by being expressive and telling the
citizens of Galatia that they have betrayed the Lord Jesus Christ by following the Jewish Laws.

The Word Love In The New Testament And Old Testament
Love is taken in many directions in the New Testament and Old Testament. The way God and Jesus
Christ present this emotion throughout the bible, shows a better understanding of unconditional love
to others. Love is one of the characteristics of God and an important part of His nature. Therefore, I
will bring forth explanation of how well the word "Love" is used from translation to translation. My
research will be coming out of the New Testament and Old Testament, even though there are many
other books I could talk about for the word love. In the New Testament, Almost everyone knows that
" God so loved the world" (John 3:16) and "God is love" (John 4:8), and when love appears nobody
can express it better than Jesus. We mainly hear about love in the beginning of the first Corinthians (
1 CO 13) at wedding ceremonies. As new translation were coming out over the years, the version
NIV used love as sex acts in Genesis to express the word rather than KJV and ESV used love as
knowing the feeling and NASB used love as strong relations. In the 1 corinthians, Paul created a
message saying," the love of god, the love of jesus christ, and the love that the christian expresses in

Testament? There are many facts and studies that prove this claim to be true contrary to popular
belief by non–Christians and other religions alike. There are at least three reasons that it can be

originals. Including the amount of copies, age, and determining that the variants within the Bible do

One of the most well known arguments a skeptic will use is "How can we actually know what the
Bible authors actually wrote, all we have is copies of copies?" Metzger would argue that all of these
copies are actually quite useful. Since, there are so many manuscripts that can help to cross–
reference copies and create a better depiction of what the original would say. With all of the copies
and differing languages, this makes the cross–referencing even stronger. The book with next highest
amount of manuscripts is Homer's Iliad, which is the equivalent of the Bible to the ancient Greeks,
with only 650 manuscripts to cross–reference. The 5,000 Greek manuscripts of the Bible alone make

The Old Testament is one of the few religious books that over the centuries has not changed and
been a central tool to the Christian. But what is it about? What are the fundamental teachings this
amazing story explains. Well like any good story it is about unlikely heroes, kings, seers, nations
rising up and falling. But though all the different turns it makes there is one key theme that can be
seen throughout. Notably, it is that despite our many sins God 's desires a personal relationship with
his people.
So how did it all begin? Well as it reads God created the heavens and the earth. He created every
living thing that is in the universe and he created man, male and female did he create them. And he
placed Adam and Eve in a garden and gave them everything that they needed only stimulating that
they could not eat from the tree in the center of the garden, the tree of good and evil. Unfortunately,
they were tempted and gave into there human desires. This is how sin came into the world making
everything chaotic and apart from what it was created to be. Now Adam and Eve had numerous
descendants but many were evil and there was only one who was righteous in the sight of the Lord,
Noah. Hence, God gave directions to Noah concerning the construction of a large boat, otherwise
known as an Ark. Into this craft would go Noah and his family and two of every animal which
moved upon the face of the earth to escape the great flood that would sweep across the earth. The

I have learned a lot in the New Testament. It's important to know how the author intended the book
to be interpreted. Also if we know the basic historical background, it could help comprehend the
meaning behind the book being written. If we really want to understand the bible to help us grow
spiritually, we must be informed in our history. It could tell us why our ancestors went through
certain trials. We can then know why we still face dilemmas from their past actions today. History
continues to affect our lives, and if we learn from the past it could salvage the future. The Gospels
are written for different reasons. Some go more in depth on particular topics, based mainly on what
the author thought would be useful for us. The books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John weren't
necessarily written in the order they appear in the New Testament. It is believed Mark was written
first, and some of the other books took notes from Mark. Matthew, Mark, and Luke are known as the
Synoptic Gospels. They share some of the same material. They wrote the story of Jesus for the next
generation. If told by mouth, it could lead to facts being changed. They wanted fellow believers to
know the story of Jesus, and the lessons taught by Him. Matthew was written to tell Jesus's
genealogy, and the path made for his ministry. Matthew is the only book about the "church".
Matthew focuses on how Jesus didn't conform to the Law, but being the human image of God. Mark

Many Christians focus majority of studies in the New Testament. The New Testament catches many
attentions because it describes Jesus' life and birth of the church. As people focus more on the New
Testament, the Old Testament is viewed as an unnecessary book to read. Christians have debated
whether the Old Testament is needed to be read. Many Christians have claimed that the Old
Testament is unnecessary to the biblical study with the New Testament containing all the study
materials needed. Even so, Old Testament is vital literature needed for Christians. The Old
Testament's importance comes from its prophecies, stories, and ideas. The Old Testament helps to
complete the New Testament The Old Testament is fundamental text for Christians due to the fact it
contains many prophecies, fulfilled in both the Old Testament and New Testament. The prophets of
the Old Testament, such as Amos, Hosea, Isaiah, and Jeremiah prophesied that Judah and Israel will
fall if they disobey God further (NIV Amos 7:17, NIV Hosea 13:9–16, NIV Isaiah 8:14, NIV
Jeremiah 6:1–15). These prophecies came true in the Old Testament as both Israel and Judah were
destroyed with many people exiled into foreign empires for about 80 years. The prophets' prophesies
did come true without any flaws as mouthpieces of God.
The prophets of the Old Testament not only prophesied the fall of Judah and Israel, but also about
the Messiah, as well. The Bible mentions the coming of the Messiah who would bring liberation.
