Disruptive in classroom
A studentwhointentionallycreatesadisturbance inclassthatdirectlyinterfereswiththe
teacher'sabilitytoinstructthe classand withotherstudents'abilitytolearnisconsidered
disruptive.Disruptive behaviorcanhave negative effectsonnotonlythe classroom
environment,butalsoonthe school experience asawhole..
There are a varietyof waysa studentmightbehave inadisruptive manner.Some are minor
and ofteneasilyignored,butafewtypesof disruptivebehaviorsgobeyondrudeness.A
studentwhomonopolizesdiscussionsorspeaksonparticularsubjectswithnorelevance to
the current lessonisexhibitingadisruptivebehaviorcalledgrandstanding,orshowingoff.
Excessive talkingwithotherstudentsduringclassorpassingnotesisanothertype of
disruptive behaviorwhichcanaffectthe entire classbymakingthe teacherdifficulttohear
or forcingthe teacherto interruptthe lessoninordertostop the chatter.Anothertype of
disruptive behavioroccurswhena studentchallengesthe teacher'sauthorityorknowledge
on a subjectbecause of angerovera grade or a general dislike of thatparticularteacher.
Thistype of behaviorcanevolve intoverbal orphysical threatstothe teacherorother
students.Less obviousdisruptive behaviorsincludelateness,sleepinginclass,andbringing
inand usingphonesorotherelectronicdevices..
Disruptive studentsinterfere withthe teacher'sabilitytoteacheffectively.The behaviors
require large amountsof the teacher'stime andattention.The teachermuststopthe lesson
or discussiontoaddressthe behavior,andthistakesawayfromthe valuable time neededto
instructthe rest of the class. If the disruptive behavioristhreatening,itmaychallenge the
teacher'sauthorityandcan create tensioninthe classroom, whichpusheslearningtothe
background.Disruptive behaviorbyone studentalsoencouragesotherstudentstodothe
same,whichcompromisesthe teacher'sauthorityandabilitytocontrol the group..
The learningprocessforotherstudentsisaffectedwhenone ormore studentsbehaveina
disruptive manner.Constantinterruptionscaninterferewithfocus.Studentsare forcedto
waitwhile the behaviorisaddressed,ortheyare sidetrackedbythe disruptive student's
attemptsto be noticed.Thiscanresultinlowergradesandbehavioral issueswithother
studentsaswell aswiththe studentwhoiscausingthe interruption.Peerstendtohave a
significantinfluence overeachother,andif one studentisdisruptive,itmayencourage
similarbehaviorinotherclassmateswhomightnothave hadtrouble otherwise..
Oftenschoolsmustfocustime andresourcesthatcouldbe usedelsewhere ontryingtostop
disruptive behaviorinstudents.Thistakesawayfromthe educational mandateof most
schools,whichisusuallytoprovide asafe,effectivelearningenvironmentforall students.
Teachersare oftennotequippedtodeal withsome typesof extremedisruptivebehaviors,
and as a result,the studentiseithersent outof classor the school must enlistthe aidof
outside professionalstotryto intervene.Thistakesresourcesandfunding,whichcouldbe
betterusedtoimprove the educational environmentforall studentsinsteadof justone.
