2. Globalization will make our
societies more creative and
prosperous, but also more
vulnerable.
- LORD ROBERTSON
3. What is Globalization?
Globalization is the process of accelerating the movements and
trades of multiple resources and goods such as: Goods, Services,
Capital, Technologies, Cultural Practices or even Humans. One of its
effects is that it increases and promotes interaction between people
from different regions of the globe. Changing the way nations,
businesses and people interact.
5. Globalization and Asia
An alternative way to see the relationship between globalization and the
Asia Pacific and South Asia is one where the region is more of an autonomous
agent serving as an engine for globalization. This framework mirrors a broader
intellectual change that seeks to re-interpret the facile narrative that
globalization is simply a form of Westernization imposing itself upon Asia.
Colonialism too has come under a new lens recently as scholars have argued
that colonies in the Asia Pacific and South Asia influenced the West as much as
vice versa.
6. Globalization and Asia
Practices and technologies such as counterinsurgency, surveillance, and
torture were developed and perfected in the colonial Philippines before making
their way back to the core of the US national security state. China became one
of the world's largest importers of basic raw materials such as iron and has
surpassed Japan, the United States, and Europe in steel production and In terms
of its low wage labor and supply chain management, China has also had an
enormous impact on the availability and consumption of goods around the
globe. Sometimes, India is often mentioned in the same breath as China for its
scale and impact on globalization.
7. Globalization and Asia
While the political and economic systems vary considerably from China,
India too has opened up and emphasized an export-oriented strategy. It is
playing a key role in global service provision as trends in outsourcing and off-
shoring increase. Women constitute a large majority of many countries' migrant
pool including the Philippines, 71%, and Sri Lanka, 66%. In 2007, India, China,
and the Philippines were three of the top four recipient states of migrant
remittances totaling US$70 billion with the other one being Mexico.
9. Pink Globalization
The region is the source of a wide variety of cultural phenomena that
have spread outward to the West and the rest of the world. Much of this has
come to be understood as the spread of a kawaii or 'cute' culture, or what
some have called 'Pink Globalization'. Gangnam Style' by Korea pop star PSY
became a viral sensation on YouTube. Released in July 2012, the song topped
music charts in over two countries. Asia Pacific and South Asia have been on
the receiving end of globalization. This can be seen across a range of domains
from economy to political structures to culture.
10. Pink Globalization
Asia Pacific and South Asia have been on the receiving end of
globalization. This can be seen across a range of domains from economy to
political structures to culture. For much of the early modern era, Asia was the
site of some of the world's most important trade routes. China has surpassed
the World Bank in lending to developing counties. India has opened up and
emphasized an export-oriented strategy with high-value exports such as
software development.
12. Globalization
Globalization, although bringing resources, goods, and even traditions all
around the globe, has also done harm while doing good. As for decades, it has
been limiting, or even preventing, the development of third world countries all
the while encouraging the more developed core countries to exploit them for
resources. Slowing down or even halting the country’s process towards a much
more advanced society. Not only that, it has the adverse affect of bringing
Terrorism, Job Insecurity, Currency Fluctuation and even Price Instability. So
overall, is Globalization truly good or not? The answer isn’t solid however. As it
brings just as much good as it does harm. One thing is for certain however.
Globalization is here to stay for a long while.
