Underachievement Among College Students
High achieving students have always been considered the creme of the crop and to be fully prepared
for college. However, studies, like the one that took place at Queen Mary College, have shown that
this is not always correct. In "Underachievement Among College Students" Megan Balduf discusses
how high achieving students struggle in college because they never had to try in highschool, and
thus did not develop the necessary skills like: time management, ability to adjust to independent life,
and good studying skills, skills that are essential for success. This study is important because it looks
first hand at what is causing gifted underachievers to not meet their potential and it also focuses on a
group that is often left out from gifted underachievement studies: college students.
Underachievement is a colossal issue because it is attributed to students not receiving the assistance
and having the motivation they require to succeed. Two of the ... Show more content on

Since the courses were not extensively challenging the students failed to develop the skills needed to
prosper in college. To assist with the transition from High school to college researchers suggested
that colleges provide gifted underachievers with counseling and/or skills courses to help them learn
how to motivate themselves to work when grades don't come easily. In conclusion, the research
team suggests that studies be carried out at other universities on gifted underachievers to help
determine what can be done to help these students become more successful. Then, a study should
taken of High school students to see how they feel about their academic success thus far and also
how they feel about the rigors of classes, their current studying skills, engagement to tasks, and time

There are many reasons for educational underachievement and it has been said that ethnicity is one
of these key factors. It has been found that Indian and Asian pupils are of higher educational
achievement than White, African–Caribbean, and Black, Pakistani and Bangladeshi pupils.
One possible cause of ethnic differences in education could be at the fault of the education system.
To investigate this Sewell conducted a study using semi–structured interviews and observations in
an inner–city boys' comprehensive school, his study revealed the ways in which African–Caribbean
students are labelled by their teachers, peers, white students as 'problems' in the classroom. Sewell
showed how Black boys use these negative perceptions to construct ... Show more content on

For example, the home of a pupil is a primary agent in their socialisation and education and this
therefore has the biggest impact on the pupil so when at school they will either be handicapped or at
an advantage from their upbringing. For example, Modood argued that some ethnic minorities have
higher levels of cultural capital, despite often being from a working–class background. Many
Indians and Asians originate from working–class backgrounds even though they end up with middle
class jobs. These parents therefore place particularly high values on educational success and contain
the knowledge and understanding of education to motivate their children and help them to succeed.
Strand also investigates ethnicity and achievement in education, he compared the progress of Indian,
African–Caribbean and white British pupils in their secondary education. Strand found that Indian
children made more positive progress than the white British students but African–Caribbean pupils
fell even further behind. Strand found the Indian's success was due to both material and cultural
factors such as high aspirations and dedication to homework, low levels of truancy and exclusion
and good resources at home such as computers and private tutoring.
However there was no evidence that African–Caribbean parents and pupils adopted a culture that
would hold them back in their educational success, they had high aspirations and a positive attitude
to school. Overall his research found

Native Underachievement in Canadian Schools Essay
Native Underachievement in Canadian Schools
A comparison of native students and their non–native peers quickly brings one to the realization that
native students are not experiencing a comparable degree of education success in Canadian schools.
It is vital that native Canadians address this issue thoroughly, to insure that the nation is no longer
faced with a semi–literate, unemployable population, requiring financial support. In order to fully
address native educational underachievement it is important to examine the historical causes of the
problem, the issues we are faced with today, as well as, identifying possible viable solutions. Early
European settlers in Canada unfoundedly conceived the white culture to be superior to ... Show

Thus, this is the reason many natives stood in strong opposition to early residential schools. Susan
Awashish of the council of the Atikamkw of Manawan Nation states, "If one...society imposes its
[institutions] on the other, the latter will react with hostility, adopting an adversarial attitude,
because it feels restricted where its most fundamental rights are concerned...We believe that a
dominant society has the responsibility to protect its minorities from eventual assimilation" (Royal
Commission on Aboriginal Peoples,1993). This is also the reason many natives today view the
education required in white schools to be irrelevant with regards to the traditional native lifestyle. It
is apparent that to many degrees, cultural assimilation through education did not work for a variety
of reasons. Although early native students were culturally displaced in white schools, they continued
to take tremendous pride in their heritage. It was impossible for the early aboriginal student to apply
anything learned in these early schools to anything he had previously experienced. Subjects taught
in residential schools did not generally interest the native student. Native indifference to early
formal education can be found. One student enrolled in the early schools recounts his experience, " I

Exploring the Reasons for the Underachievement of Ethnic Minority Children
Rational ========
Every child goes through the same education system, every child works through the same
'curriculum 2000' set by New Labour and every child sits the same exams up to the age of 16. So
why are there marked differences in educational attainment for ethnic minority students?
My main aim is to find out if racism is the main cause of the gap between different ethnic groups in
education, which can lead to some ethnic minority groups being over represented in low–status, low
paid jobs.
My investigation will look at the different explanations that sociologists have used over the years to
explain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet I can do a comparison with the rest of Britain by using other sociologist research on the topic,
and see how much mine and theirs vary.
I have picked this topic because I feel that education underachievement is a major problem and so is
institutional racism. This issue has gained more attention after the racially motivated murder of
Stephen Lawrence and the Mancpherson report that followed. I also believe that everyone should be
given an equal chance to do his or her best, so it is important to me to find out if racism is the real
reason for ethnic minority students underachievement.
METHODOLOGY
An important issue in my research is how am I going to go about it? The main issue is to find out the
best method that suits the nature of my research. Along side this it is important to know how
practical and ethical my research is.
I have decided to use unstructured interviews for my research. This is due to several reasons, one
being the constraints of the area I live in. Norwich generally has small amounts of ethnic diversity,
and my school shows this, as the majority of students are White. If this wasn't so then I would of
used questionnaires and observation methods. Therefore I have decided that my best opinion is to
talk to people who deal with such matters on a day–to–day

A Student Performance Essay
One of the most unpleasant and frustrating situations faced by many parents and teachers at various
stages of their lives generally involves situations where they work or live with children who do not
perform as per their capabilities or the potential, thereby being labelled under the banner as
'underachievers' though most of the people are not really clear about the deeper and exact meaning
of this term (Clinkenbeard., 2012).The point at which this term is to be used is very ambiguous as
there are not clear cut definitions of underachievement or the point from where underachievement
begins. Additionally, the circumstances which fall under this category is also very ill defined
(Clinkenbeard., 2012). If we consider an example where a student performs badly in mathematics
but is simultaneously superior while reading amongst different students present in a class, would
he/she be considered as an under achiever. Also, whether the list which defines the underachiever's
category is drawn from a single academic performance or is based upon numerous performances
which have been recorded over the time remains unclear (Clinkenbeard., 2012). Thus, from these
above situations which are being encountered quite regularly indicates that the situation relating to
underachievement is very complicated coupled with being multifaceted, just similar to those
children who are increasingly being labelled as underachievers.
It is important to address the reasons why many talented and intelligent

Making Sense of White Working Class Educational Underachievement
Summary
The article 'Making sense of white working class underachievement' by Diane Raey (2009) In the K.
P. Sveimsson (ed) Who Cares about the White Working Class? , Published by The Runnymeade
Trust, is important in indicating the weaknesses of the education system in the United Kingdom
today. According to this article, the White working class children do not perform well in academic
performance. This issue is the centre stage for a tug of war among the parents, teachers, the
government and the wealthy and middle class people within this jurisdiction. As it emerges, the
issue is more complex than it seems and includes historical perspectives, the perceptions towards the

Children from the white working families do not feature anywhere in class or in administration due
process. School administration and teachers want nothing to do with them. It is also important to
note that in most cases, the wealthy make policies of any govern sector including schools as Diane
points out.
For the white working families' children to do well in education and perform well, they would have
to change. However, changing is somehow risky and even limited. After all, the students may
change to defy all odds but they do not have an effect on the policy making process which is for the
middle class and the wealthy. At the same time, it would be extremely challenging to go above the
perceptions in the society. The middle class and the wealthy also need to change. Change in this case
is acceptance of the white working class families as they are and work together to address the
problem together. However, this seems to be just an illusion basing on the perceptions the middle
class and the wealthy have towards the white working class group.
Strengths and Weaknesses
The article by Diane Raey (2009) titled 'Making sense of white working class underachievement'
provides a lot of information on the problems leading to low academic performance of the white
working class children. The article has well–articulated sections and topics, which describe the
problem well. In each section, the author provides all the necessary information

Losing Is Good For You, By Ashely Merryman
Loss Leads to Victory In the article "Losing is Good for You", Ashely Merryman claims that
children should not be given awards for something not worth an award such as participation. She
states that our youth should not be put under the illusion that winning is as easy as one, two, three.
Based on her information, receiving an achievement should be earned instead of given. She stresses
the fact that constant praise and awards for possible effortless doings will result in a mindset that
believes that putting effort into something will not matter in the end because of the expected praise.
With that being said, she believes that constant awarding will lead to underachievement and poor
problem–solving skills. I do agree with what Merryman is

Using material from item A and elsewhere assess the view that social class differences in
educational achievement are the result of school processes such as labelling.
Social class is typically known as social grouping or hierarchy based on differences in wealth,
income or occupation. In the UK there are mainly two social classes; working class and middle
class.
33% of students who are currently on free school meals achieve 5A*–C at GCSE, however 61% of
students who are not on free school meals also achieve 5A*–C grades. 90% of the failing school are
from deprived areas, and 79% of children from a higher professional family are more likely to go to

This can affect those less able because it foes against the main stream. This is backed up by
"Gilbourn and Youdell have examined the role of educational policies in creating the context for
such school processes to take place" (Item A) Gilbourn and Youdell shows how teachers notions of
ability conclude to their decisions of which pupils have the potential to achieve 5A*–C grade gcse's.
Neil Keddie then argues that the more intelligent students get taught more complex and advanced
information and methods while the students in the lower sets are not recognised and being left
behind. However Rosenthal and Jacobson performed an experiment where they picked random
students from the class who were also working class and told teachers they are able to improve, this
later resulted in teachers spending more time with these 'selected' students which made them
improve and achieve better. Therefore showing that self–fulfilling prophecy can have an effect in
education underachievement. To conclude sub cultures, labelling, streaming and self–fulfilling
prophecy can effect education underachievement, due to social class, gender and race.
Being labelled tends to be based on your social class, where you will be labelled between smart and
dumb. Streaming is typically based on your ability on whether you're smart or dumb. Also, sub
cultures and self–fulfilling prophecy is known to go under all social class, gender and race as it is a

John Lennon 's Life Of Wealth And Prestige
John Lennon, the highly influential singer and songwriter of the popular English rock band, The
Beatles, once said, "[when] I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key
to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down
'happy'. They told me I didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand
life." Although it may seem simple, Lennon 's message is deeply profound. Overachievement is a
common issue in the United States and all over the world, as well. Students everywhere overwork

area adolescents surveyed –– 58 percent – said school was their biggest cause of stress." This
demonstrates that overachievement is an especially big issue in this geographic area. Considering
the fact that the majority of students in this region of the country are overwhelmed by school,
wouldn't that mean students should relax themselves and take it easier in school to ultimately relieve
most of their stress? When it comes down to it, failing tomorrow's history test does not equate to
being a failure at life. Besides, stressing could cloud up a person 's thinking and may very well end
up in him or her performing worse. Weisman's article also mentions how "students who are afraid of
making mistakes wind up learning less and scoring lower on exams than those who focus on effort."
So, stop stressing and relax. Overachievers may appear as highly accomplished individuals on the
outer surface, but sometimes there is an unethical, weak, and insecure character shadowed
underneath, mainly in those who are pushed not by strict parents or overachievement culture, but by
themselves. According to an article from The Tribune by Linda Lewis Griffith, a poll of "4,500 high
school students in 2002 found that 75 percent admitted to cheating." The pressure to perform well
leaves most students stooping low enough to cheat. What these students need to realize is that by
doing so, they are only cheating themselves. Sure, maybe it is possible to

Tackling Chapter Summary
In a society that claims to strive for gender–equality, would it be possible to apply measures in order
to put to an end the mutual exclusion created by both genders from a young age? In her book
Tackling Gender Inequality Raising Pupil Achievement, Christine Forde analyzes and critiques the
policy and strategies implemented to tackle gender inequality. Forde's work is still relevant to
today's society as it deals with issues such as the 'underachievement' of boys making it a perfect text
to study in order to further understand the underlying causes and problems left to resolve. In this
book review, we will be objectively and critically looking at the main arguments within the text, the
positive and negative aspects of Forde's critique as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shows the reader the difficulty of the topic from the very start. This suggests that the
educational system will always be more favorable to a certain group within our society because of
societal expectations. It is also clear that because of the engrained stereotypes such as "girls are all
hardworking" (Forde, p.5) and "boys are inevitably troublesome" (Forde, p.5) complicates the task
of creating a gender–equal curriculum and environment. This is why it is important to realize that
gender in education cannot only be evaluated as an individual variable, other factors (such as
disability, poverty, religion...) come into play and can affect one's education and identity. The first
part of the book gives us background knowledge on this issue.
Chapter two deals with distinct policies and strategies put in place since the 1970s in order to
identify common trends to tackle gender inequalities. Most of the policies mentioned in the text
explain that "'gender' was a part of a more general inclusion policy and not dealt with explicitly"
(Forde, p.15) but all do nevertheless try to create a 'positive ethos'. In this chapter, it is shown that
although policies did not have a focus on gender, when children participated in gender "played role"
(Forde, p.17) stereotypical views would arise. "Girls thought that boys got more attention and both
boys and girls agreed that girls were better learners" (Forde, p.17) this emphasizes and

An Investigation of the Gender Gap of Boys' Underachieving...
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to investigate the gender gap, especially of boys' underachievement in
literacy, and discover if there are particular strategies that schools can implement in order to raise
the attainment levels of boys. As the issue of the gender gap is so wide I selected literature to review
which covered a wide range of theorists and existing studies. Specifically I wanted to identify some
of the suggested causes for the underachievement of boys and any already proposed effective
strategies which I could execute in my own study. The data I collected from the study was both
qualitative and quantitative in order to give a more valid outcome; these included an open–ended,
semi–structured interview, which I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Regardless of Gorard's (2001) analysis, there are many who still feel that the performance gap is a
concern. In 1993 the Ofsted report offered some insight into differing perspectives and explanations
for boys' underachievement, including the lack of male literacy role models, classroom strategies,
curriculum literacy content, perceptions of behaviour, social class and ethnicity (cited in Bearne,
2004). Solsken (1995, cited in Bearne, 2004) added to this list claiming that literacy is associated
more with females and femininity and believes that this possibly has a negative effect on boys and
their attitudes towards reading. Solken's (1995) argument links very closely with Watson et al.(2007)
who proposed that popular explanations often focus on boys' 'biological make–up'. They claim that
evidence shows that 'hegemonic masculinity is central to ... the struggles boys face as literacy
learners' (Watson et al. 2010: 357). Rowan et al (2002) also believes that 'boys are biologically
different to girls and that this biologically difference is the cause of behavioural differences' (Rowan
et al. 2002, cited in Watson et al. 2010:357). He believes that due to these biological differences,
boys and girls are defined by inherent masculinity and femininity characteristics and in order for
educational success this must be acknowledged and accommodated for. This is an important
assertion to consider for

Ethnic Underachievement In Education Essay
The British education system acts as an agent of secondary socialisation which delivers pupils with
the norms and values of society. The focus on ethnic differences in achievement has been prominent
in recent years as there has been a consistency of black underachievement and black exclusions
from education, which has evoked numerous explanations as to why this pattern continuously
occurs.
The DFES 2006 reports that only 39% of Black pupils achieve 5+ A*–C GCSE grades which
denotes that Black boys are among the lowest achievers at secondary school level compared to
pupils from ethnic minority groups. The DFES additionally reports that 'Nationally, African–
Caribbean pupils are nearly three times more likely to be excluded from school as white pupils, with
more than 84% of permanent exclusions being boys' (DfES 2006). Diane Abbott, a London member
of Parliament (2002) stated 'there is a silent catastrophe happening in Britain's schools in the way
they continue to fail Black British children' due to the increasing number of black pupils being
permanently excluded from schools.
Adolph Cameron, head of the Jamaican Teachers' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The idea of labelling has persistently been brought to attention when discussing ethnic
underachievement in education, due to the effects it can/may have. According to Oxford
Dictionaries, 'labelling' is defined as attaching a label to someone or something or assign to a
category (e.g. streaming). In education, pupils are often labelled either positively or negatively by
their teachers depending on their behaviour. Often when students are labelled negatively for
example 'thick' or 'troublesome', it leads to a self–fulfilling prophecy, whereby pupils eventually
believe the labels that teachers have attached to them. Therefore under these circumstances, if they
are predicted to fail or achieve low grades, it is likely to

who the audience for Reyes's article is as soon as you read the abstract because even though the
abstract is supposed to be denser, in it he does not just toss around key terms without defining them
and instead tries to make his abstract as clear as possible. Also, the very first sentence of his essay is
in bold and in capital letters to draw in the reader, and it works because rather than starting out with
a transition word it starts out with "New York City" and then nothing, a comma follows this and the
reader is left wanting to know more about this essay because they want to know what about New
York City. Then he proceeds to define New York City as "the gateway in the continental U.S. for the
Puerto Rican migration" and goes on to say that it is "the locus for the significant proportion of the
Puerto Rican 'Education Pipeline," it is this description at the beginning of the essay that hooks the
reader. It also makes it clear that his intention is to capture the attention of not only colleagues but
also common folk. After reading the article this becomes even more obvious because on page 151 he

Using Material from Item a and Elsewhere, Assess the Claim...
Using material from Item A and elsewhere, assess the claim that gender differences in educational
achievement are primarily the 'result of changes in society'
Some sociologists claim that gender differences in achievement are the result of external factors
such as changes in wider society, e.g. The impact of feminist ideas and changing employment
opportunities (as stated in Item A). However, this could also be an outcome of internal factors such
as the education system becoming 'feminised', which could have impacted the performance of girls
achievement, as it has risen at a faster rate at some levels and in some subjects. Some sociologists
also argue that the media have exaggerated the extent and nature of any problem.
External ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These changes are affecting girls' attitudes towards education in a number of ways as increased
numbers of female–headed lone–parent families may mean more women need to take on the major
'bread winner' role. This further creates a new financially independent, career–minded role model
for girls. The need for good qualifications is made very clear and the girls aspirations tend to require
academic effort. Becky Francis points out that boys are more likely to have career aspirations that
are not only unrealistic but often require few formal qualifications, e.g. professional footballer.
Evidence suggests that girls are more likely to spend their leisure time in ways which compliment
their education and contribute to educational achievements. Mitsos and Browne place considerable
emphasis on reading. Women are more likely to read than men, and mothers are more likely than
fathers to read to their children. Therefore girls are more likely to have same–sex role models to
encourage them to read. Poor language and literacy skills are likely to affect boys' performance
across a wide range of subjects.
Whilst there are factors outside school, internal factors also impact gender differences in educational
achievements hugely. According to Tony Sewell, boys fall behind in education because schools have
become more 'feminised', as indicated in Item A. This means that feminine traits such as methodical
working and attentiveness have

Essay On Codependency
Codependency is defined by Wikipedia as a type of dysfunctional helping relationship where one
person supports or enables another person's drug addiction, alcoholism, gambling addiction, poor
mental health, immaturity, irresponsibility, or underachievement. In most cases people understand
that it's a need to be dependent or the cause of one's problem. The cause can be anything stressful,
inherited, or even just not being satisfied with life. Catching the symptoms of someone under this
condition is something that is key to helping anyone or preventing them from returning to that state
of mind. Understanding the key causes that results with negative effects is key to helping individuals
return to a healthy life styles. Stress is a key contributor for individuals to become codependent
people, especially when it results out of a dysfunctional or even over loving feeling. According to

The Explanations Of Working Class Underachievement Essay
This essay will aim to outline and evaluate the explanations of working class underachievement.
This will be through examining the home and school factors that affect these individuals and then
reaching a conclusion that highlights the most influential factors while finding connections between
them. A person is considered working class if they are typically employed in manual or industrial
work in order to achieve a wage.
Home factors play a major role in the underachievement of the working class. The April 2013 Great
British class survey found that the traditional working class had an annual average income of
£13,000, approximately £34,000 economically worse off than the established middle class (Savage,
et al., 2013). This links into an important area called material deprivation, this is the idea that
children who come from families that are denied certain material things in life due to their low of
income and so may not have access to, for example, standard of housing or to consumer goods
which could expand intellectual understanding and this puts them at an educational disadvantage.
This can be supported by Halsey (1980) who found that the most important factor that influenced
whether a working class child decided to stay on at school after 16 was the amount of financial
support they received. The majority of working class is lacking in this and could explain why the
only 6.4% in 1943–52 (see appendix) of the working class go into further and or higher education

Social Class And Underachievement In Sociology
Pursuing this discussion further, it could be implied that there is a connection drawn between
education and social class. Usually when conferring about these two aspects, social class and
underachievement becomes the focus of attention. "Working–class children experience a much
greater cultural clash when they enter school than those from more privellaged homes" (Giddens
and Griffiths, 2006, p.710). Gillborn and Youdell (2000) took this further suggesting how teachers
believed that ability was 'fixed' (Darmody, Tyrrell and Song, 2011) and saw working class pupils as
having less ability and as lower achievers. Dunne and Gazeley (2008) also believe that
underachievers came from working class backgrounds and were labelled as 'underachievers' which
resulted in many internalizing it and living up to the self–fulfilling prophecy. Both sociologists
defined working class underachievement in a manner which was beyond outside their control by
locating their reasoning on aspects such as a low quality of life at home for such individuals
(Lawson, Heaton and Brown, 2010). "And reflected in the minutiae of teachers' perception and
interactions with students" (Youdell, 2006, p.15) this is when teachers expectations of working class
students as 'lazy' 'trouble–some' and middle class pupils as 'bright' (Hargreaves, 1967) is translated
into actual outcomes affecting the educational achievement of different social classes.

Importance Of Boys Underachievement In Reading And Writing
Although there is evidence that proves boys' underachievement in reading and writing in contrast to
girls', it is important to first note that there are sources that identify boys being less committed to
school than girls, but why is this? A significant aspect is boys' attitude to school and examinations.
Weis (1990) effectively argues that the majority of boys are not concerned with excelling in school,
but only with passing. This evidence strongly suggests that boys' attitude to education is
significantly lower than girls due to only requiring to pass exams instead of exceeding their
limitations and reaching their full potential. A positive attitude to education is essential to ensure all
pupils obtain higher than satisfactory academic achievements, resulting in a high–quality learning
experience, although there are also numerous factors that contribute to boys' underachievement in
reading and writing and the ways it can be tackled.
Boys' underachievement in reading and writing can be traced to activities within their household.
For example, it is not common that young boys witness their father reading novels instead of
newspapers, yet there is evidence to suggest that young boys are strongly influenced by this.
Pickering (1997, p. 49) supports this by expertly stating that, "it seems hard to deny that children are
affected to some extent in their learning by the home." As a result, it can be argued that mothers are

Essay On Gender Inequality In The Caribbean
Critical Reading and Writing in Social Sciences: FOUN1013
Documented Essay
Worldwide, women are achieving higher representation and success. At the post–secondary level
women are earning most of the degrees awarded. Where did our males disappear to? Gender
inequality is an extensive, complex and often vague concept. Simply it is defined as the ranking of a
particular gender, whether male or female, over the other and how they are treated based on their
gender. Gender inequality and the result of male underperformance in schools have become major
issues in the Caribbean, and affect the individuals involved and the society on a whole. Boys'
underachievement therefore should not be ignored and an analysis of ... Show more content on

Delinquent behaviours may also develop, such as crime when males find other ways of surviving in
providing for themselves and their families. Society, on the other hand, is economically affected by
the reduction in the workforce. Less people working in an economy, results in a decline in levels of
production. Unemployed persons may also put a strain on the countries' resources. This is the
current state of Jamaica's economy. As society progresses and changes, the roles of males and
females continue to change. Historically, Caribbean men were known to take part in manual work or
attend schools, as academic excellence was seen as a male domain, while females did domestic
work. Men were also given better paying jobs, while females had to work twice as hard to be
qualified for those same jobs. In contemporary Caribbean society, the roles have interchanged and it
appears that men are lagging in education as well as in job placements. Due to the history of the
socialisation of males, it is evident in today's society that they are more likely to survive after not
attending school than females, whose only other option is domestic labour. This is so because males
are hardened to find other ways of making a living. (Chevannes, 1999) Figueroa (2004) identifies
other minor factors which influence male underperformance such as: the absence of motivational
factors, a

Defining Underachievement
Under–achievement is a threatening position to educators and can be a disruptive force throughout
education systems. The idea of under–achievement suggests that the systems is at fault because
students do not reach their potential under the guidance of that system. The purpose of this essay is
to analyze the idea or terminology of under–achievement in the context of my specific teaching
scenario. I will present my argument by first, introducing literature that has been specifically
enlightening towards the subject. This essay will then highlight my personal experiences with this
phenomenon in my own class room and how certain experiences have helped me define what
under–achievement actually is and can help me recognize its features in the future. Lastly, this essay
will offer some guidelines in fixing the problems that will be indentified in examining under–
achievement, and focus on strategies that may be useful in improving this particular area of
education and learning.
Defining Under–Achievement Under–achievement is a difficult idea to grasp in its entirety due to its
reliance on forecasted expectations. It is important to realize that educators are not prophets and
cannot successfully predict the academic success of students based on past performance. Although
we cannot fully capture, qualitatively what under achievement really consists of, this idea is better
understood in a subjective manner. Reiss (2009) suggested that there are six motives that can

Male Underachievment Ia
Introduction. Male Underachievement continues to be a major part of academics, not only in the
Caribbean but worldwide. It has been heavily encouraged through negative stereotypes as well as
media. For example in some television series, the protagonist is shown as being 'too cool for school'
and in some cases has failing grades. The problem of male underachievement is becoming more
prevalent within our society today, and can be seen as result due to a vichyssoise of problems such
as peer pressure, negative portrayal by the media and lack of proper upbringing in homes. This
problem continues to be detrimental to our society, not only in terms of the short term but also in the
long run. The best solution for the lack of performance in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Therefore we can see that in Trinidad the marginalization of the father figure role is leading to not
only an increase in male underachievement but also eventually an increase in other social problems
such as crime.
Singh S. (2007) sees underachievement as occurring even at higher levels of education. For instance
she has noted that "females have yet again outshone males with 65 percent of the first degrees and
63 percent of higher degrees being secured by females." This presents a worrying situation as it
means that there would be less men who are educated and employable within the country, what this
could lead to is an eventual labour vacuum, due to the inability to fill positions. This she argues is
based mainly on cultural factors, which must be addressed. If this is not done, the performance of
males may continue to spiral downwards leading to disastrous results.

Critical Analyzing Rickard Jonsson's Research 'Boys'...
Student achievement is one of the most significant goals that every education policy is intended to
make better. Recent developments in information and communication technology (ICTs) and
pedagogical improvisations create better platforms for positive student achievement. However,
many aspects are associated with the overall achievement including physical, biological, and
psychological aspects. All the three parts are associated with the gender. Many studies have shown
that gender affects the achievement of students in schools and in most of the cases boys perform
poorly as compared to girl students. This paper is intended to establish a diagnostic framework of
reasons behind the underachievement of boys by critically analysing Rickard Jonsson's research
'Boys' Anti–School Culture? Narratives and School Practices'. The researcher selected two
secondary schools situated at Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden. This place is a recognized
multi–ethnic suburb with diverse cultural richness. In this research study, Jonsson (p. 277) asserts
that underachievement of boys has been a very hot public debate and at most of the times it is
pedagogical framework that is being continuously changed to get the even results. The main
argument of the article is stated as "how the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Tackling Gender Underachievement in Literacy and Numeracy...
Introduction
In recent years there has been much research into gender learning issues and the apparent learning
disparity between boys and girls.
Such research has included investigations into boys' underachievement in literacy and girls'
underachievement in mathematics. The aim of such research is to recognise key reasons why such
trends are occurring and perhaps more importantly, to address these within the classroom. Since the
introduction of the National Curriculum, national testing and assessment has provided a
comprehensive account of attainment at all key stages, especially in the key areas of numeracy,
literacy and science. However, such results should not be used exclusively when discussing gender

The Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CPLE) has extensively studied gender differences in
learning. One such area of their research is the Gender and Literacy project investigating 4
Londonschools and their findings are now being used to tackle the underachievement of boys in
literacy education.
Social stereotyping is believed to play a major part in the child's learning (Head, 1999), and such
role reinforcement will affect that child's attitude and motivation towards classroom education. It is
normal for young children to spontaneously play in single sex groups and this can be considered as
an early introduction into the single sex peer groups that will dominate in later life. Such group play
may be simply due to a common, shared interest, but the need to conform to group dynamics and the
need for group acceptance may reinforce stereotyping. Within the school environment boys tend to
adopt an
"anti swot culture" (Bradford, 1996:P1), Head states that "the swot is derided and one should be
'cool' about school work. Boys cannot be seen as taking this work too seriously." (1999:P65). The

Assess the Argument That Is Neither Possible nor Desirable...
Assess the argument that is neither possible nor desirable to use experiments in social research
Experiments are a scientific procedure which is used to test a hypothesis. There are two different
types of experiments which are available to the researcher, these are laboratory and field.
In laboratory experiments all variables are under the control of the researcher, the researcher will
obtain their results from taking two groups which are identical. One group will be the control group
and the other will be the experimental group. The researcher will then alter the independent variable
in the experimental group to see if the variable that the researcher is investigating changes in any
way when compared to the control group. If there is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This therefore, makes laboratory experiments appear to be not possible to conduct in regards to
social research.
Additionally, laboratory experiments in social research can cause the Hawthorne effect which can
reduce the validity of the research and also make them seem undesirable. The Hawthorne effect is
when the presence of a researcher changes the behaviour of the group that is being studied. The
participants are not showing their true behaviour and one reason why they may be altering their
behaviour when in the presence of a researcher is because they think that they have guessed what
the researcher is studying and therefore wants to help them with their research by acting in the way
that they think the researcher wants to see. Their assumptions though are not always correct.
Field experiments are those conducted in the real world and under normal social conditions, but
following a similar procedure to the laboratory experiments. Participants in this experiment do not
normally know that they are being studied in an experiment; this therefore eradicates the Hawthorne
effect, but causes another undesirable outcome as it causes a problem with getting consent.
Interpretivists are typically interested in using field experiments as they want to know how
meanings and labels can get attached to different people and then how others then view them.

The Underachievement Of Male And Female Education
The underachievement of males in society has been a growing problem that is being widely ignored
by society. Children are experiencing the most important and emotional part of their lives when they
are in school that will leave ever–lasting effects. The success of people as students are not real
indicators of how they will do later in life, but it is the confidence and self–esteem that people will
remember in their school days that might stay with adults until they realize that it is keeping them
down or until death. Stereotypes, lack of male role models, more feminized school system, and
combining this all together to find the underlying problem of the female majority who are
succeeding, graduating, and are accepted more often than males. These are the main issues to figure
out when it comes to the imbalance of male and female education. Male Underachievement in
Education Introduction In recent years, female achievement in the education system has grown very
strong, but in its place, male achievement in education has plummeted. Due to male stereotypes,
lack of male role models in school and at home along with the adoption of more feminized school
places and practices, males are no longer being challenged to take risks and freely engage in critical
thinking skills to be able to succeed as much as females in the current educational system. Since the
recent uprising of the feminist movement, the fact that females are faring better than their male
counterparts,

Factors Causing Gender Inequity
The gender gap has been a concern for decades, it used to be that females lagged behind males when
it came to academic achievement. Females now outperform males academically and are more likely
to obtain college degrees and enroll in graduate school despite the gender inequalities that remain in
American society. The underachievement of females has diminished if not vanished due to the focus
of the United States for the past 30 years to close the gender achievement gap. Yet, the concern in
the most recent years has been both the lower performance of girls in mathematics and science and
now males' underperformance in most academic areas (Del Rio & Strasser, 2012). Why is it that
despite that females and males attend the same educational environment, males are having a hard
time keeping up and females continue to be less likely to take advanced math or science classes or
enroll in science and math related careers?
There are several factors that cause gender inequity and have caused the gender achievement gap to
grow. Factors such as society, culture, and students' beliefs and attitudes about learning. As members
of a society we value certain rules, customs, and values and we learn to follow our society's rules,
customs and values. This is called socialization and part of this socialization includes gender roles.
As a society we have learned that males and females have different roles and we expect them to act
differently depending on their gender. Children learn at a

Underachievement Of Black Males Essay
According to Marian Wright Edelman, "Education is a precondition to survival in America Today.
Unfortunately, a good quality education that will ensure a successful and economically stable future
for our children today is not available to all children, especially young Black males. According to
Jenkins (2006) in the needs assessment for African American Men of Arizona State University
(AAMASU) program, the university noted that Black males experience a high level of
underachievement in the higher education arena, over involvement in the criminal system, and high
rates of unemployment, poverty, and dying via homicide (Arizona State University, 2004). All too
often African American males have been caught in a web of stereotyped notions of race and gender
that place them at considerable disadvantages in schools and ultimately society (Howard, 2008).
According to Hooks (2004) more than any other group of men in our society black males are
perceived as lacking intellectual skills. The 1900 census reports that 57% of black males were
illiterate. Now as we move onward in the twenty–first century, black males make up a huge
percentage of those who are illiterate (Hooks, 2004). Society will looks at our young black men and
label them as lazy, uneducated, underachievers, and highly involved in the criminal justice system,
however at the same time, it overlooks how they got there. According to Jenkins (2006) this has not
always been the case. Prior to the segregation of schools, young

Evaluate the Claim That Factors Outside the School Are the...
Underachievement in schools can be heavily linked to factors that are internalised within the school.
Both internal and external factors can contribute to the underachievement of pupils who belong to a
working class background, and they may be equally as effectual on the underachievement of the
pupil.
One of the major causes of underachievement is the lack of economic capital, proposed by Pierre
Bourdieu (1984), that a working class family possess. As item A states, 'sociologists claim that
factors outside the school, such as parental attitudes and parental income, are the main causes of
working class underachievement.' Children who belong to a working class background may not be

This is due to the elaborated code being used by teachers, as well as questions and textbooks being
written with more complex vocabulary. As well as this, Bernstein said that the elaborated code is a
more effective tool for analysing and reasoning and for expressing thoughts clearly and effectively,
which are all essential in achieving highly during education. This, ultimately leads to higher
achievement for middle class children cause they are comfortable with more complex language, and
therefore have the necessary understanding to achieve highly. Comparatively, working class children
struggle to understand the elaborated code, because they simply haven't been brought up in a
household where this type of speech is used frequently. This leads to underachievement amongst the
working class. Due to the use of the restricted code, these pupils may be labelled by teachers as less
able and therefore streamed into lower sets, leading to a self–fulfilling prophecy. These lower sets
may consist if pupils who belong to an anti–school subculture, which can disrupt the learning of
fellow pupils, thus leading to a higher chance of underachievement.
Thirdly, parenting style is also a hugely contributing factor for underachievement. As item A states,
'factors outside the school, such as parental attitudes and parental income, are the main causes of
working class underachievement.' Educated parents emphasise consistent

The Long Tail Of Underachievement Essay
"Education systems are expressly set up to help achieve quality of opportunity and outcome(APA)",
but question is, are they? Statistic 's put out by the 'Trends in International Mathematics and Science
Study ' (TIMSS) showed our 9–year–olds were ranked 34th out of 53 countries–effectively bottom
equal with other developing nations along with a whole lot of unforgiving data findings (Johnston,
2015). Social inequality has a much bigger role to play in the "long tail of underachievement". It is
common knowledge that in New Zealand the gap between the wealthy and the poor has widened
enormously over the past two decades (APA). To analyses this dilemma we need to look at the
defection of socioeconomic status. Max Weber formed the term socioeconomic status (SES): "An
individual 's or group 's position within hierarchical social structure. Socioeconomic status depends
on a combination of variables, including occupation, education, income, wealth, and place of
residence" (APA). I will shed some light on answering this question and to also look at historical
issues relating to socioeconomic status and New Zealand 's education. I will also mention some
solutions that have put forward, to provide opportunities for all children in New Zeland.
From where it all began, the first contact with Pakeha in the late 1700s and early 1800s, was largely
on Maori terms. It is often suggested that one of the main reasons that the first European settles

These characteristics can also cause the already identified students to not achieve to their fullest due
to stress and lack of motivation.
It is very hard to understand why students don't perform to their full potential when you know they
are capable. This is known as underachievement. "Both early researchers and more recent authors
have defined underachievement in Social and Emotional Development of the Gifted 3 terms of a
discrepancy between a child's school performance and some ability index such as an IQ score."
(Delisle & Galbraith, 2002). "Gifted children who do not succeed in school are often successful in
outside activities such as sports, social events, after–school jobs, talent or hobby interests." (Delisle
& Galbraith, 2002). So we wonder what causes the underachievement.
Bainbridge (2014), believes these problems result from gifted children being able to intellectually
understand abstract concepts but are then unable to deal with those concepts emotionally. Ones
physical development may also lead to an inability to complete a task that they are capable of
intellectually envisioning. "Perfectionism can lead to fear of failure, in turn causing a gifted child to
avoid failure by refusing to even try something." (Bainbridge, 2014). This often leads to a lack of
motivation among students.

Working Class Underachievement
Contemporary views are that class is still the most significant social factor for accounting for
differences in educational achievement. It seems that middle class children tend to do better than
working class children. Most sociologists believe that in every social class there is the same range of
ability, this means that class differences in educational attainment are not due to class differences in
intelligence, but due to other circumstances such as the home and socialization. However some
sociologists would argue that attainment in classes results from sifting, sorting and assessment of
pupils in terms of teacher's perceptions of class, ability and conduct. Throughout this essay, the view
that working class underachievers in school is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This theory states that those at the bottom of the class system are deprived of important values,
attitudes, experiences and skills which are essential for educational success. Their home life lacks
the kind of stimulation needed for high attainment, for example, the absence of books and
educational toys. Basil Bernstein identified two forms of speech pattern, the restricted code and the
elaborate code. The restricted code is a kind of shorthand speech. In comparison, in the elaborated
code, meanings are made explicit, explanations are provided and details are spelt out. According to
Bernstein, most middle class children have been socialised in both the restricted and elaborated
codes whereas many working class children are limited to the restricted code. As teachers use the
elaborated code, working class children have an immediate disadvantage and may be criticised for
misunderstanding. Working class children learn this language code at home, therefore being another
reason for underachievement in school being related to home circumstances. Further more, the
French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu starts from the idea that there is a dominant culture in society.
Children born into the middle class have a built in advantage. Their culture is closer to the culture of
the school so they will be more likely to succeed, their language is closer to that of the teachers so
they will be more likely to

Black Male Underachievement : African American Males
The lives of young African American males is under constant threat in the United States. "Only 41%
of African American males graduate from high school in the U.S., leaving more than half of African
American males between the ages of 16 and 19 unemployed" (McGee, 2013). According to McGee
(2013), fifty percent of African American males in grades 6–12 have been suspended compared to
21 % of White males. Seventeen percent of African American males have been expelled, compared
to 1 % of White males and there are more African Americans (mostly male) under correctional
control today–in prison or jail, on probation or parole–than were enslaved in 1850, a decade before
the Civil War began. Looking at these statistics it is easy to recognize the many hardships African
American males have to endure and it also depicts the portrait of Black male underachievement at
various points in their lives. "There is no shortage of empirical evidence to highlight the difficulties
African American males encounter, including the realm of education and the consequences
associated with being undereducated (McGee, 2013). According to McGee (2013), many educators
oftentimes frame African American male achievement in ways that emphasize underachievement,
which frequently leads to the misconception that all African American males, as a whole, are failing
in school and in life without exception. Some research on African American male students shows
that they are at least three grades behind Whites in

The Challenges Of Underachievement In Gifted Students
Underachievement in gifted education can be attributed to a number of challenges that gifted
students face. Gifted students are capable of achieving, but factors such as learning disabilities and
poor self–efficacy, prevent them from performing adequately. There are interventions that teachers
and parents can work together to implement to help work against these factors of underachievement.
According to the article, "Underachieving gifted students: Two case studies", gifted students need
specific interventions to help them be successful in the gifted classroom. Through the
implementation of a Creative Writing Program, it was found that positive reinforcement, one to one
teacher support, and differentiation are interventions that help to alleviate gifted underachievement
(Bennett–Rappell & Northcote, 2016). I personally loved this article because it spoke from the
honest application of specific interventions within a realistic classroom situation. The specificity of
interventions and honest reports of success when implemented were extremely helpful in
determining effective instructional decisions when working with this niche student group. As a new
teacher, it is intimidating to see a pattern happening amongst your students and not know the best
practices that I should implement to help alleviate the pattern. In addition, the article "Exploring
Teachers' Experiences of Working with Gifted Students Who Underachieve", explored a different

Everywhere we look there are children participating in sports and activities. These activities may
include baseball, softball, gymnastics, dance or swim team. Many of these children are likely filled
with excitement just thinking about winning the championship game, hitting a homerun, winning
dance competitions, catching the winning ball or swimming that winning relay. As a result, children
likely daydream that their rooms could one day be filled with trophies and first place ribbons. In
reality though, most children do not achieve such greatness. Society has decided that we should now

"If children know they will automatically get an award, what is the impetus for improvement? Why

children recognize that the children will gain an award just for joining the team or group and don't
actually have to try, practice or do the kid's best, it will teach the child that they do not have to try in
anything in life. "In college, those who've grown up receiving endless awards do the requisite work,
but don't see the need to do it well." This explanation shows that if children are raised receiving
participation awards for not doing a child's best or trying, they will carry out this attitude with them
for a child's whole life. Thus, giving participation trophies teaches kids it's okay to do only the
requisite and they therefore become

Character Analysis Of Will Hunting
Analysis of Will Hunting Advice for the Foster Parents The fictional character Will Hunting is an
orphan so I will address his foster care parents in my paper. Will Hunting is a brilliant
underachieving gifted student. As his foster care parents you need to realize he has learned to
underachieve early in his academic because he has already mastered the material easily and he has
not had to push himself to succeed academically (Ruff, Deborah, 2011). Will has never been placed
in a nurturing environment so you will need to realize he uses his humor as a defense mechanism. If
you learn to appreciate his humor you realize it is an extremely enjoyable part of his personality
(Ruff, Deborah, 2011). He will need tons of emotional support because as a gifted child he
experiences the world around him in a heightened state (Cross, Tracy, et al. 2018). You should be
upfront with Will about his IQ and abilities this will lead him to better deal with his abilities (Ruff,
Deborah, 2011). You will need to help him learn to prioritize to better help his gifts flourish and on
the same hand you will also have to help him learn how to let go of things that are out of his control
(Ruff, Deborah, 2011). Try to help Will pursue his math abilities and other things he finds extremely
interesting (Ruff, Deborah, 2011). The stress of raising a gifted child can be more unique then
raising other children. It has been compared to raising a special needs child (Renati, Robert, et al.,
2016, p.6). One study found gifted students long term happiness is directly related to whether they
thought their parents were warm and supportive (Renati, Robert, et al., 2016, p.6). The main sources
of stress for parents raising gifted children have been identified as: lack of parenting alliance, stress
that stems from finding helpful educational strategies, lack of persistence, and lack of management
of family routines (Renati, Robert, et al, 2016, 13–14). So if you can come up with a plan between
the two of you to try to combat these issues ahead of time they may save you stress in the long run.
The relationship between the parents or care takers of the gifted child must be strong in order to aid

Underachievement Among College Students

  • 1. Underachievement Among College Students High achieving students have always been considered the creme of the crop and to be fully prepared for college. However, studies, like the one that took place at Queen Mary College, have shown that this is not always correct. In "Underachievement Among College Students" Megan Balduf discusses how high achieving students struggle in college because they never had to try in highschool, and thus did not develop the necessary skills like: time management, ability to adjust to independent life, and good studying skills, skills that are essential for success. This study is important because it looks first hand at what is causing gifted underachievers to not meet their potential and it also focuses on a group that is often left out from gifted underachievement studies: college students. Underachievement is a colossal issue because it is attributed to students not receiving the assistance and having the motivation they require to succeed. Two of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since the courses were not extensively challenging the students failed to develop the skills needed to prosper in college. To assist with the transition from High school to college researchers suggested that colleges provide gifted underachievers with counseling and/or skills courses to help them learn how to motivate themselves to work when grades don't come easily. In conclusion, the research team suggests that studies be carried out at other universities on gifted underachievers to help determine what can be done to help these students become more successful. Then, a study should taken of High school students to see how they feel about their academic success thus far and also how they feel about the rigors of classes, their current studying skills, engagement to tasks, and time ... • 3. Using Material from Item a and Elsewhere Assess the... There are many reasons for educational underachievement and it has been said that ethnicity is one of these key factors. It has been found that Indian and Asian pupils are of higher educational achievement than White, African–Caribbean, and Black, Pakistani and Bangladeshi pupils. One possible cause of ethnic differences in education could be at the fault of the education system. To investigate this Sewell conducted a study using semi–structured interviews and observations in an inner–city boys' comprehensive school, his study revealed the ways in which African–Caribbean students are labelled by their teachers, peers, white students as 'problems' in the classroom. Sewell showed how Black boys use these negative perceptions to construct ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, the home of a pupil is a primary agent in their socialisation and education and this therefore has the biggest impact on the pupil so when at school they will either be handicapped or at an advantage from their upbringing. For example, Modood argued that some ethnic minorities have higher levels of cultural capital, despite often being from a working–class background. Many Indians and Asians originate from working–class backgrounds even though they end up with middle class jobs. These parents therefore place particularly high values on educational success and contain the knowledge and understanding of education to motivate their children and help them to succeed. Strand also investigates ethnicity and achievement in education, he compared the progress of Indian, African–Caribbean and white British pupils in their secondary education. Strand found that Indian children made more positive progress than the white British students but African–Caribbean pupils fell even further behind. Strand found the Indian's success was due to both material and cultural factors such as high aspirations and dedication to homework, low levels of truancy and exclusion and good resources at home such as computers and private tutoring. However there was no evidence that African–Caribbean parents and pupils adopted a culture that would hold them back in their educational success, they had high aspirations and a positive attitude to school. Overall his research found ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Native Underachievement in Canadian Schools Essay Native Underachievement in Canadian Schools A comparison of native students and their non–native peers quickly brings one to the realization that native students are not experiencing a comparable degree of education success in Canadian schools. It is vital that native Canadians address this issue thoroughly, to insure that the nation is no longer faced with a semi–literate, unemployable population, requiring financial support. In order to fully address native educational underachievement it is important to examine the historical causes of the problem, the issues we are faced with today, as well as, identifying possible viable solutions. Early European settlers in Canada unfoundedly conceived the white culture to be superior to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, this is the reason many natives stood in strong opposition to early residential schools. Susan Awashish of the council of the Atikamkw of Manawan Nation states, "If one...society imposes its [institutions] on the other, the latter will react with hostility, adopting an adversarial attitude, because it feels restricted where its most fundamental rights are concerned...We believe that a dominant society has the responsibility to protect its minorities from eventual assimilation" (Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples,1993). This is also the reason many natives today view the education required in white schools to be irrelevant with regards to the traditional native lifestyle. It is apparent that to many degrees, cultural assimilation through education did not work for a variety of reasons. Although early native students were culturally displaced in white schools, they continued to take tremendous pride in their heritage. It was impossible for the early aboriginal student to apply anything learned in these early schools to anything he had previously experienced. Subjects taught in residential schools did not generally interest the native student. Native indifference to early formal education can be found. One student enrolled in the early schools recounts his experience, " I do not remember any book ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Exploring the Reasons for the Underachievement of Ethnic... Exploring the Reasons for the Underachievement of Ethnic Minority Children Rational ======== Every child goes through the same education system, every child works through the same 'curriculum 2000' set by New Labour and every child sits the same exams up to the age of 16. So why are there marked differences in educational attainment for ethnic minority students? My main aim is to find out if racism is the main cause of the gap between different ethnic groups in education, which can lead to some ethnic minority groups being over represented in low–status, low paid jobs. My investigation will look at the different explanations that sociologists have used over the years to explain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet I can do a comparison with the rest of Britain by using other sociologist research on the topic, and see how much mine and theirs vary. I have picked this topic because I feel that education underachievement is a major problem and so is institutional racism. This issue has gained more attention after the racially motivated murder of Stephen Lawrence and the Mancpherson report that followed. I also believe that everyone should be given an equal chance to do his or her best, so it is important to me to find out if racism is the real reason for ethnic minority students underachievement. METHODOLOGY An important issue in my research is how am I going to go about it? The main issue is to find out the best method that suits the nature of my research. Along side this it is important to know how practical and ethical my research is. I have decided to use unstructured interviews for my research. This is due to several reasons, one being the constraints of the area I live in. Norwich generally has small amounts of ethnic diversity, and my school shows this, as the majority of students are White. If this wasn't so then I would of used questionnaires and observation methods. Therefore I have decided that my best opinion is to talk to people who deal with such matters on a day–to–day

  • 10. A Student Performance Essay One of the most unpleasant and frustrating situations faced by many parents and teachers at various stages of their lives generally involves situations where they work or live with children who do not perform as per their capabilities or the potential, thereby being labelled under the banner as 'underachievers' though most of the people are not really clear about the deeper and exact meaning of this term (Clinkenbeard., 2012).The point at which this term is to be used is very ambiguous as there are not clear cut definitions of underachievement or the point from where underachievement begins. Additionally, the circumstances which fall under this category is also very ill defined (Clinkenbeard., 2012). If we consider an example where a student performs badly in mathematics but is simultaneously superior while reading amongst different students present in a class, would he/she be considered as an under achiever. Also, whether the list which defines the underachiever's category is drawn from a single academic performance or is based upon numerous performances which have been recorded over the time remains unclear (Clinkenbeard., 2012). Thus, from these above situations which are being encountered quite regularly indicates that the situation relating to underachievement is very complicated coupled with being multifaceted, just similar to those children who are increasingly being labelled as underachievers. It is important to address the reasons why many talented and intelligent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Making Sense of White Working Class Educational Underachievement Summary The article 'Making sense of white working class underachievement' by Diane Raey (2009) In the K. P. Sveimsson (ed) Who Cares about the White Working Class? , Published by The Runnymeade Trust, is important in indicating the weaknesses of the education system in the United Kingdom today. According to this article, the White working class children do not perform well in academic performance. This issue is the centre stage for a tug of war among the parents, teachers, the government and the wealthy and middle class people within this jurisdiction. As it emerges, the issue is more complex than it seems and includes historical perspectives, the perceptions towards the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Children from the white working families do not feature anywhere in class or in administration due process. School administration and teachers want nothing to do with them. It is also important to note that in most cases, the wealthy make policies of any govern sector including schools as Diane points out. For the white working families' children to do well in education and perform well, they would have to change. However, changing is somehow risky and even limited. After all, the students may change to defy all odds but they do not have an effect on the policy making process which is for the middle class and the wealthy. At the same time, it would be extremely challenging to go above the perceptions in the society. The middle class and the wealthy also need to change. Change in this case is acceptance of the white working class families as they are and work together to address the problem together. However, this seems to be just an illusion basing on the perceptions the middle class and the wealthy have towards the white working class group. Strengths and Weaknesses The article by Diane Raey (2009) titled 'Making sense of white working class underachievement' provides a lot of information on the problems leading to low academic performance of the white working class children. The article has well–articulated sections and topics, which describe the problem well. In each section, the author provides all the necessary information ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Losing Is Good For You, By Ashely Merryman Loss Leads to Victory In the article "Losing is Good for You", Ashely Merryman claims that children should not be given awards for something not worth an award such as participation. She states that our youth should not be put under the illusion that winning is as easy as one, two, three. Based on her information, receiving an achievement should be earned instead of given. She stresses the fact that constant praise and awards for possible effortless doings will result in a mindset that believes that putting effort into something will not matter in the end because of the expected praise. With that being said, she believes that constant awarding will lead to underachievement and poor problem–solving skills. I do agree with what Merryman is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Using Material from Item a and Elsewhere, Asses the View... Using material from item A and elsewhere assess the view that social class differences in educational achievement are the result of school processes such as labelling. Social class is typically known as social grouping or hierarchy based on differences in wealth, income or occupation. In the UK there are mainly two social classes; working class and middle class. 33% of students who are currently on free school meals achieve 5A*–C at GCSE, however 61% of students who are not on free school meals also achieve 5A*–C grades. 90% of the failing school are from deprived areas, and 79% of children from a higher professional family are more likely to go to university, whilst only 15% of children from unskilled and manual backgrounds go to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This can affect those less able because it foes against the main stream. This is backed up by "Gilbourn and Youdell have examined the role of educational policies in creating the context for such school processes to take place" (Item A) Gilbourn and Youdell shows how teachers notions of ability conclude to their decisions of which pupils have the potential to achieve 5A*–C grade gcse's. Neil Keddie then argues that the more intelligent students get taught more complex and advanced information and methods while the students in the lower sets are not recognised and being left behind. However Rosenthal and Jacobson performed an experiment where they picked random students from the class who were also working class and told teachers they are able to improve, this later resulted in teachers spending more time with these 'selected' students which made them improve and achieve better. Therefore showing that self–fulfilling prophecy can have an effect in education underachievement. To conclude sub cultures, labelling, streaming and self–fulfilling prophecy can effect education underachievement, due to social class, gender and race. Being labelled tends to be based on your social class, where you will be labelled between smart and dumb. Streaming is typically based on your ability on whether you're smart or dumb. • 18. John Lennon 's Life Of Wealth And Prestige John Lennon, the highly influential singer and songwriter of the popular English rock band, The Beatles, once said, "[when] I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down 'happy'. They told me I didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life." Although it may seem simple, Lennon 's message is deeply profound. Overachievement is a common issue in the United States and all over the world, as well. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... area adolescents surveyed –– 58 percent – said school was their biggest cause of stress." This demonstrates that overachievement is an especially big issue in this geographic area. Considering the fact that the majority of students in this region of the country are overwhelmed by school, wouldn't that mean students should relax themselves and take it easier in school to ultimately relieve most of their stress? When it comes down to it, failing tomorrow's history test does not equate to being a failure at life. Besides, stressing could cloud up a person 's thinking and may very well end up in him or her performing worse. Weisman's article also mentions how "students who are afraid of making mistakes wind up learning less and scoring lower on exams than those who focus on effort." So, stop stressing and relax. Overachievers may appear as highly accomplished individuals on the outer surface, but sometimes there is an unethical, weak, and insecure character shadowed underneath, mainly in those who are pushed not by strict parents or overachievement culture, but by themselves. According to an article from The Tribune by Linda Lewis Griffith, a poll of "4,500 high school students in 2002 found that 75 percent admitted to cheating." The pressure to perform well leaves most students stooping low enough to cheat. What these students need to realize is that by doing so, they are only cheating themselves. • 20. Tackling Chapter Summary In a society that claims to strive for gender–equality, would it be possible to apply measures in order to put to an end the mutual exclusion created by both genders from a young age? In her book Tackling Gender Inequality Raising Pupil Achievement, Christine Forde analyzes and critiques the policy and strategies implemented to tackle gender inequality. Forde's work is still relevant to today's society as it deals with issues such as the 'underachievement' of boys making it a perfect text to study in order to further understand the underlying causes and problems left to resolve. In this book review, we will be objectively and critically looking at the main arguments within the text, the positive and negative aspects of Forde's critique as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This shows the reader the difficulty of the topic from the very start. This suggests that the educational system will always be more favorable to a certain group within our society because of societal expectations. It is also clear that because of the engrained stereotypes such as "girls are all hardworking" (Forde, p.5) and "boys are inevitably troublesome" (Forde, p.5) complicates the task of creating a gender–equal curriculum and environment. This is why it is important to realize that gender in education cannot only be evaluated as an individual variable, other factors (such as disability, poverty, religion...) come into play and can affect one's education and identity. The first part of the book gives us background knowledge on this issue. Chapter two deals with distinct policies and strategies put in place since the 1970s in order to identify common trends to tackle gender inequalities. Most of the policies mentioned in the text explain that "'gender' was a part of a more general inclusion policy and not dealt with explicitly" (Forde, p.15) but all do nevertheless try to create a 'positive ethos'. In this chapter, it is shown that although policies did not have a focus on gender, when children participated in gender "played role" (Forde, p.17) stereotypical views would arise. "Girls thought that boys got more attention and both boys and girls agreed that girls were better learners" (Forde, p.17) this emphasizes and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to investigate the gender gap, especially of boys' underachievement in literacy, and discover if there are particular strategies that schools can implement in order to raise the attainment levels of boys. As the issue of the gender gap is so wide I selected literature to review which covered a wide range of theorists and existing studies. Specifically I wanted to identify some of the suggested causes for the underachievement of boys and any already proposed effective strategies which I could execute in my own study. The data I collected from the study was both qualitative and quantitative in order to give a more valid outcome; these included an open–ended, semi–structured interview, which I ... In 1993 the Ofsted report offered some insight into differing perspectives and explanations for boys' underachievement, including the lack of male literacy role models, classroom strategies, curriculum literacy content, perceptions of behaviour, social class and ethnicity (cited in Bearne, 2004). Solsken (1995, cited in Bearne, 2004) added to this list claiming that literacy is associated more with females and femininity and believes that this possibly has a negative effect on boys and their attitudes towards reading. Solken's (1995) argument links very closely with Watson et al.(2007) who proposed that popular explanations often focus on boys' 'biological make–up'. They claim that evidence shows that 'hegemonic masculinity is central to ... the struggles boys face as literacy learners' (Watson et al. 2010: 357). Rowan et al (2002) also believes that 'boys are biologically different to girls and that this biologically difference is the cause of behavioural differences' (Rowan et al. 2002, cited in Watson et al. 2010:357). He believes that due to these biological differences, boys and girls are defined by inherent masculinity and femininity characteristics and in order for educational success this must be acknowledged and accommodated for. • 24. Ethnic Underachievement In Education Essay The British education system acts as an agent of secondary socialisation which delivers pupils with the norms and values of society. The focus on ethnic differences in achievement has been prominent in recent years as there has been a consistency of black underachievement and black exclusions from education, which has evoked numerous explanations as to why this pattern continuously occurs. The DFES 2006 reports that only 39% of Black pupils achieve 5+ A*–C GCSE grades which denotes that Black boys are among the lowest achievers at secondary school level compared to pupils from ethnic minority groups. The DFES additionally reports that 'Nationally, African– Caribbean pupils are nearly three times more likely to be excluded from school as white pupils, with more than 84% of permanent exclusions being boys' (DfES 2006). Diane Abbott, a London member of Parliament (2002) stated 'there is a silent catastrophe happening in Britain's schools in the way they continue to fail Black British children' due to the increasing number of black pupils being permanently excluded from schools. Adolph Cameron, head of the Jamaican Teachers' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Oxford Dictionaries, 'labelling' is defined as attaching a label to someone or something or assign to a category (e.g. streaming). In education, pupils are often labelled either positively or negatively by their teachers depending on their behaviour. Often when students are labelled negatively for example 'thick' or 'troublesome', it leads to a self–fulfilling prophecy, whereby pupils eventually believe the labels that teachers have attached to them. Also, the very first sentence of his essay is in bold and in capital letters to draw in the reader, and it works because rather than starting out with a transition word it starts out with "New York City" and then nothing, a comma follows this and the reader is left wanting to know more about this essay because they want to know what about New York City. Then he proceeds to define New York City as "the gateway in the continental U.S. for the Puerto Rican migration" and goes on to say that it is "the locus for the significant proportion of the Puerto Rican 'Education Pipeline," it is this description at the beginning of the essay that hooks the reader. Using material from Item A and elsewhere, assess the claim that gender differences in educational achievement are primarily the 'result of changes in society' Some sociologists claim that gender differences in achievement are the result of external factors such as changes in wider society, e.g. The impact of feminist ideas and changing employment opportunities (as stated in Item A). However, this could also be an outcome of internal factors such as the education system becoming 'feminised', which could have impacted the performance of girls achievement, as it has risen at a faster rate at some levels and in some subjects. Some sociologists also argue that the media have exaggerated the extent and nature of any problem. External ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These changes are affecting girls' attitudes towards education in a number of ways as increased numbers of female–headed lone–parent families may mean more women need to take on the major 'bread winner' role. This further creates a new financially independent, career–minded role model for girls. The need for good qualifications is made very clear and the girls aspirations tend to require academic effort. Becky Francis points out that boys are more likely to have career aspirations that are not only unrealistic but often require few formal qualifications, e.g. professional footballer. Evidence suggests that girls are more likely to spend their leisure time in ways which compliment their education and contribute to educational achievements. Mitsos and Browne place considerable emphasis on reading. Women are more likely to read than men, and mothers are more likely than fathers to read to their children. Therefore girls are more likely to have same–sex role models to encourage them to read. Poor language and literacy skills are likely to affect boys' performance across a wide range of subjects. Whilst there are factors outside school, internal factors also impact gender differences in educational achievements hugely. According to Tony Sewell, boys fall behind in education because schools have become more 'feminised', as indicated in Item A. • 34. The Explanations Of Working Class Underachievement Essay This essay will aim to outline and evaluate the explanations of working class underachievement. This will be through examining the home and school factors that affect these individuals and then reaching a conclusion that highlights the most influential factors while finding connections between them. A person is considered working class if they are typically employed in manual or industrial work in order to achieve a wage. Home factors play a major role in the underachievement of the working class. The April 2013 Great British class survey found that the traditional working class had an annual average income of £13,000, approximately £34,000 economically worse off than the established middle class (Savage, et al., 2013). This links into an important area called material deprivation, this is the idea that children who come from families that are denied certain material things in life due to their low of income and so may not have access to, for example, standard of housing or to consumer goods which could expand intellectual understanding and this puts them at an educational disadvantage. This can be supported by Halsey (1980) who found that the most important factor that influenced whether a working class child decided to stay on at school after 16 was the amount of financial support they received. The majority of working class is lacking in this and could explain why the only 6.4% in 1943–52 (see appendix) of the working class go into further and or higher education after ... • 36. Social Class And Underachievement In Sociology Pursuing this discussion further, it could be implied that there is a connection drawn between education and social class. Usually when conferring about these two aspects, social class and underachievement becomes the focus of attention. "Working–class children experience a much greater cultural clash when they enter school than those from more privellaged homes" (Giddens and Griffiths, 2006, p.710). Gillborn and Youdell (2000) took this further suggesting how teachers believed that ability was 'fixed' (Darmody, Tyrrell and Song, 2011) and saw working class pupils as having less ability and as lower achievers. Dunne and Gazeley (2008) also believe that underachievers came from working class backgrounds and were labelled as 'underachievers' which resulted in many internalizing it and living up to the self–fulfilling prophecy. Both sociologists defined working class underachievement in a manner which was beyond outside their control by locating their reasoning on aspects such as a low quality of life at home for such individuals (Lawson, Heaton and Brown, 2010). "And reflected in the minutiae of teachers' perception and interactions with students" (Youdell, 2006, p.15) this is when teachers expectations of working class students as 'lazy' 'trouble–some' and middle class pupils as 'bright' (Hargreaves, 1967) is translated into actual outcomes affecting the educational achievement of different social classes. ... • 38. Importance Of Boys Underachievement In Reading And Writing Although there is evidence that proves boys' underachievement in reading and writing in contrast to girls', it is important to first note that there are sources that identify boys being less committed to school than girls, but why is this? A significant aspect is boys' attitude to school and examinations. Weis (1990) effectively argues that the majority of boys are not concerned with excelling in school, but only with passing. This evidence strongly suggests that boys' attitude to education is significantly lower than girls due to only requiring to pass exams instead of exceeding their limitations and reaching their full potential. A positive attitude to education is essential to ensure all pupils obtain higher than satisfactory academic achievements, resulting in a high–quality learning experience, although there are also numerous factors that contribute to boys' underachievement in reading and writing and the ways it can be tackled. Boys' underachievement in reading and writing can be traced to activities within their household. For example, it is not common that young boys witness their father reading novels instead of newspapers, yet there is evidence to suggest that young boys are strongly influenced by this. Pickering (1997, p. 49) supports this by expertly stating that, "it seems hard to deny that children are affected to some extent in their learning by the home." As a result, it can be argued that mothers are to blame as they are the ones reading stories to their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Society, on the other hand, is economically affected by the reduction in the workforce. Less people working in an economy, results in a decline in levels of production. Unemployed persons may also put a strain on the countries' resources. This is the current state of Jamaica's economy. As society progresses and changes, the roles of males and females continue to change. Historically, Caribbean men were known to take part in manual work or attend schools, as academic excellence was seen as a male domain, while females did domestic work. Men were also given better paying jobs, while females had to work twice as hard to be qualified for those same jobs. In contemporary Caribbean society, the roles have interchanged and it appears that men are lagging in education as well as in job placements. Due to the history of the socialisation of males, it is evident in today's society that they are more likely to survive after not attending school than females, whose only other option is domestic labour. This is so because males are hardened to find other ways of making a living. • 42. Defining Underachievement Under–achievement is a threatening position to educators and can be a disruptive force throughout education systems. The idea of under–achievement suggests that the systems is at fault because students do not reach their potential under the guidance of that system. The purpose of this essay is to analyze the idea or terminology of under–achievement in the context of my specific teaching scenario. I will present my argument by first, introducing literature that has been specifically enlightening towards the subject. This essay will then highlight my personal experiences with this phenomenon in my own class room and how certain experiences have helped me define what under–achievement actually is and can help me recognize its features in the future. Lastly, this essay will offer some guidelines in fixing the problems that will be indentified in examining under– achievement, and focus on strategies that may be useful in improving this particular area of education and learning. Defining Under–Achievement Under–achievement is a difficult idea to grasp in its entirety due to its reliance on forecasted expectations. It is important to realize that educators are not prophets and cannot successfully predict the academic success of students based on past performance. It has been heavily encouraged through negative stereotypes as well as media. For example in some television series, the protagonist is shown as being 'too cool for school' and in some cases has failing grades. The problem of male underachievement is becoming more prevalent within our society today, and can be seen as result due to a vichyssoise of problems such as peer pressure, negative portrayal by the media and lack of proper upbringing in homes. This problem continues to be detrimental to our society, not only in terms of the short term but also in the long run. The best solution for the lack of performance in ... Singh S. (2007) sees underachievement as occurring even at higher levels of education. For instance she has noted that "females have yet again outshone males with 65 percent of the first degrees and 63 percent of higher degrees being secured by females." This presents a worrying situation as it means that there would be less men who are educated and employable within the country, what this could lead to is an eventual labour vacuum, due to the inability to fill positions. This she argues is based mainly on cultural factors, which must be addressed. If this is not done, the performance of males may continue to spiral downwards leading to disastrous results. Primary sources refer to data that has been collected by the researcher themselves, while secondary sources refers to all data collected from through another person's work. • 46. Critical Analyzing Rickard Jonsson's Research 'Boys'... Student achievement is one of the most significant goals that every education policy is intended to make better. Recent developments in information and communication technology (ICTs) and pedagogical improvisations create better platforms for positive student achievement. However, many aspects are associated with the overall achievement including physical, biological, and psychological aspects. All the three parts are associated with the gender. Many studies have shown that gender affects the achievement of students in schools and in most of the cases boys perform poorly as compared to girl students. This paper is intended to establish a diagnostic framework of reasons behind the underachievement of boys by critically analysing Rickard Jonsson's research 'Boys' Anti–School Culture? Narratives and School Practices'. The researcher selected two secondary schools situated at Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden. This place is a recognized multi–ethnic suburb with diverse cultural richness. In this research study, Jonsson (p. 277) asserts that underachievement of boys has been a very hot public debate and at most of the times it is pedagogical framework that is being continuously changed to get the even results. Social stereotyping is believed to play a major part in the child's learning (Head, 1999), and such role reinforcement will affect that child's attitude and motivation towards classroom education. It is normal for young children to spontaneously play in single sex groups and this can be considered as an early introduction into the single sex peer groups that will dominate in later life. Such group play may be simply due to a common, shared interest, but the need to conform to group dynamics and the need for group acceptance may reinforce stereotyping. Within the school environment boys tend to adopt an "anti swot culture" (Bradford, 1996:P1), Head states that "the swot is derided and one should be 'cool' about school work. Boys cannot be seen as taking this work too seriously." (1999:P65). • 53. The Underachievement Of Male And Female Education The underachievement of males in society has been a growing problem that is being widely ignored by society. Children are experiencing the most important and emotional part of their lives when they are in school that will leave ever–lasting effects. The success of people as students are not real indicators of how they will do later in life, but it is the confidence and self–esteem that people will remember in their school days that might stay with adults until they realize that it is keeping them down or until death. Stereotypes, lack of male role models, more feminized school system, and combining this all together to find the underlying problem of the female majority who are succeeding, graduating, and are accepted more often than males. Females now outperform males academically and are more likely to obtain college degrees and enroll in graduate school despite the gender inequalities that remain in American society. The underachievement of females has diminished if not vanished due to the focus of the United States for the past 30 years to close the gender achievement gap. Yet, the concern in the most recent years has been both the lower performance of girls in mathematics and science and now males' underperformance in most academic areas (Del Rio & Strasser, 2012). Why is it that despite that females and males attend the same educational environment, males are having a hard time keeping up and females continue to be less likely to take advanced math or science classes or enroll in science and math related careers? There are several factors that cause gender inequity and have caused the gender achievement gap to grow. Factors such as society, culture, and students' beliefs and attitudes about learning. • 57. Underachievement Of Black Males Essay According to Marian Wright Edelman, "Education is a precondition to survival in America Today. Unfortunately, a good quality education that will ensure a successful and economically stable future for our children today is not available to all children, especially young Black males. According to Jenkins (2006) in the needs assessment for African American Men of Arizona State University (AAMASU) program, the university noted that Black males experience a high level of underachievement in the higher education arena, over involvement in the criminal system, and high rates of unemployment, poverty, and dying via homicide (Arizona State University, 2004). All too often African American males have been caught in a web of stereotyped notions of race and gender that place them at considerable disadvantages in schools and ultimately society (Howard, 2008). Both internal and external factors can contribute to the underachievement of pupils who belong to a working class background, and they may be equally as effectual on the underachievement of the pupil. One of the major causes of underachievement is the lack of economic capital, proposed by Pierre Bourdieu (1984), that a working class family possess. As well as this, Bernstein said that the elaborated code is a more effective tool for analysing and reasoning and for expressing thoughts clearly and effectively, which are all essential in achieving highly during education. This, ultimately leads to higher achievement for middle class children cause they are comfortable with more complex language, and therefore have the necessary understanding to achieve highly. Comparatively, working class children struggle to understand the elaborated code, because they simply haven't been brought up in a household where this type of speech is used frequently. • 63. The Long Tail Of Underachievement Essay "Education systems are expressly set up to help achieve quality of opportunity and outcome(APA)", but question is, are they? Statistic 's put out by the 'Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study ' (TIMSS) showed our 9–year–olds were ranked 34th out of 53 countries–effectively bottom equal with other developing nations along with a whole lot of unforgiving data findings (Johnston, 2015). Social inequality has a much bigger role to play in the "long tail of underachievement". It is common knowledge that in New Zealand the gap between the wealthy and the poor has widened enormously over the past two decades (APA). To analyses this dilemma we need to look at the defection of socioeconomic status. Max Weber formed the term socioeconomic status (SES): "An individual 's or group 's position within hierarchical social structure. Socioeconomic status depends on a combination of variables, including occupation, education, income, wealth, and place of residence" (APA). I will shed some light on answering this question and to also look at historical issues relating to socioeconomic status and New Zealand 's education. I will also mention some solutions that have put forward, to provide opportunities for all children in New Zeland. From where it all began, the first contact with Pakeha in the late 1700s and early 1800s, was largely on Maori terms. It is often suggested that one of the main reasons that the first European settles came to New Zealand was to get away from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Social And Emotional Development Of The Gifted Social and Emotional Development of the Gifted 1 Running head: SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE GIFTED Social and Emotional Development of the Gifted Emily Medford Arkansas State University Social and Emotional Development of the Gifted 2 Social and Emotional Development of the Gifted When dealing with gifted children, there are often many social and emotional problems that are underlying. Gifted students are not like other students. These students are often referred to as the ones that are smart with good grades and have superior test scores. Gifted students are envisioned as the students that are extraordinary in many aspects! What is not always ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These characteristics can also cause the already identified students to not achieve to their fullest due to stress and lack of motivation. It is very hard to understand why students don't perform to their full potential when you know they are capable. This is known as underachievement. "Both early researchers and more recent authors have defined underachievement in Social and Emotional Development of the Gifted 3 terms of a discrepancy between a child's school performance and some ability index such as an IQ score." (Delisle & Galbraith, 2002). "Gifted children who do not succeed in school are often successful in outside activities such as sports, social events, after–school jobs, talent or hobby interests." (Delisle & Galbraith, 2002). So we wonder what causes the underachievement. Bainbridge (2014), believes these problems result from gifted children being able to intellectually understand abstract concepts but are then unable to deal with those concepts emotionally. Ones physical development may also lead to an inability to complete a task that they are capable of intellectually envisioning. "Perfectionism can lead to fear of failure, in turn causing a gifted child to avoid failure by refusing to even try something." (Bainbridge, 2014). This often leads to a lack of motivation among students. McCoach & Siegle (2005), believe that motivated students appear to

  • 68. Working Class Underachievement Contemporary views are that class is still the most significant social factor for accounting for differences in educational achievement. It seems that middle class children tend to do better than working class children. Most sociologists believe that in every social class there is the same range of ability, this means that class differences in educational attainment are not due to class differences in intelligence, but due to other circumstances such as the home and socialization. However some sociologists would argue that attainment in classes results from sifting, sorting and assessment of pupils in terms of teacher's perceptions of class, ability and conduct. Throughout this essay, the view that working class underachievers in school is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This theory states that those at the bottom of the class system are deprived of important values, attitudes, experiences and skills which are essential for educational success. Their home life lacks the kind of stimulation needed for high attainment, for example, the absence of books and educational toys. Basil Bernstein identified two forms of speech pattern, the restricted code and the elaborate code. The restricted code is a kind of shorthand speech. In comparison, in the elaborated code, meanings are made explicit, explanations are provided and details are spelt out. According to Bernstein, most middle class children have been socialised in both the restricted and elaborated codes whereas many working class children are limited to the restricted code. As teachers use the elaborated code, working class children have an immediate disadvantage and may be criticised for misunderstanding. Working class children learn this language code at home, therefore being another reason for underachievement in school being related to home circumstances. Further more, the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu starts from the idea that there is a dominant culture in society. Children born into the middle class have a built in advantage. Their culture is closer to the culture of the school so they will be more likely to succeed, their language is closer to that of the teachers so they will be more likely to ... • 70. Black Male Underachievement : African American Males The lives of young African American males is under constant threat in the United States. "Only 41% of African American males graduate from high school in the U.S., leaving more than half of African American males between the ages of 16 and 19 unemployed" (McGee, 2013). According to McGee (2013), fifty percent of African American males in grades 6–12 have been suspended compared to 21 % of White males. Seventeen percent of African American males have been expelled, compared to 1 % of White males and there are more African Americans (mostly male) under correctional control today–in prison or jail, on probation or parole–than were enslaved in 1850, a decade before the Civil War began. Looking at these statistics it is easy to recognize the many hardships African American males have to endure and it also depicts the portrait of Black male underachievement at various points in their lives. "There is no shortage of empirical evidence to highlight the difficulties African American males encounter, including the realm of education and the consequences associated with being undereducated (McGee, 2013). According to McGee (2013), many educators oftentimes frame African American male achievement in ways that emphasize underachievement, which frequently leads to the misconception that all African American males, as a whole, are failing in school and in life without exception. Some research on African American male students shows that they are at least three grades behind Whites in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. The Challenges Of Underachievement In Gifted Students Underachievement in gifted education can be attributed to a number of challenges that gifted students face. Gifted students are capable of achieving, but factors such as learning disabilities and poor self–efficacy, prevent them from performing adequately. There are interventions that teachers and parents can work together to implement to help work against these factors of underachievement. According to the article, "Underachieving gifted students: Two case studies", gifted students need specific interventions to help them be successful in the gifted classroom. Through the implementation of a Creative Writing Program, it was found that positive reinforcement, one to one teacher support, and differentiation are interventions that help to alleviate gifted underachievement (Bennett–Rappell & Northcote, 2016). I personally loved this article because it spoke from the honest application of specific interventions within a realistic classroom situation. The specificity of interventions and honest reports of success when implemented were extremely helpful in determining effective instructional decisions when working with this niche student group. As a new teacher, it is intimidating to see a pattern happening amongst your students and not know the best practices that I should implement to help alleviate the pattern. In addition, the article "Exploring Teachers' Experiences of Working with Gifted Students Who Underachieve", explored a different side of underachievement in gifted ... • 76. Persuasive Essay: Should Everyone Get A Prize? Everywhere we look there are children participating in sports and activities. These activities may include baseball, softball, gymnastics, dance or swim team. Many of these children are likely filled with excitement just thinking about winning the championship game, hitting a homerun, winning dance competitions, catching the winning ball or swimming that winning relay. As a result, children likely daydream that their rooms could one day be filled with trophies and first place ribbons. In reality though, most children do not achieve such greatness. Society has decided that we should now reward all participants with ribbons for participation and being a member of the group or team. However, not all kids have the same abilities in sports ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "If children know they will automatically get an award, what is the impetus for improvement? Why bother learning problem–solving skills, when there are never obstacles to begin with?" This quote is from the article, "Losing is Good for You", by Ashley Merryman. Merryman demonstrates that if children recognize that the children will gain an award just for joining the team or group and don't actually have to try, practice or do the kid's best, it will teach the child that they do not have to try in anything in life. "In college, those who've grown up receiving endless awards do the requisite work, but don't see the need to do it well." This explanation shows that if children are raised receiving participation awards for not doing a child's best or trying, they will carry out this attitude with them for a child's whole life. Thus, giving participation trophies teaches kids it's okay to do only the requisite and they therefore become ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Character Analysis Of Will Hunting Analysis of Will Hunting Advice for the Foster Parents The fictional character Will Hunting is an orphan so I will address his foster care parents in my paper. Will Hunting is a brilliant underachieving gifted student. As his foster care parents you need to realize he has learned to underachieve early in his academic because he has already mastered the material easily and he has not had to push himself to succeed academically (Ruff, Deborah, 2011). Will has never been placed in a nurturing environment so you will need to realize he uses his humor as a defense mechanism. If you learn to appreciate his humor you realize it is an extremely enjoyable part of his personality (Ruff, Deborah, 2011). He will need tons of emotional support because as a gifted child he experiences the world around him in a heightened state (Cross, Tracy, et al. 2018). You should be upfront with Will about his IQ and abilities this will lead him to better deal with his abilities (Ruff, Deborah, 2011). You will need to help him learn to prioritize to better help his gifts flourish and on the same hand you will also have to help him learn how to let go of things that are out of his control (Ruff, Deborah, 2011). Try to help Will pursue his math abilities and other things he finds extremely interesting (Ruff, Deborah, 2011). The stress of raising a gifted child can be more unique then raising other children. It has been compared to raising a special needs child (Renati, Robert, et al., 2016, p.6). One study found gifted students long term happiness is directly related to whether they thought their parents were warm and supportive (Renati, Robert, et al., 2016, p.6). The main sources of stress for parents raising gifted children have been identified as: lack of parenting alliance, stress that stems from finding helpful educational strategies, lack of persistence, and lack of management of family routines (Renati, Robert, et al, 2016, 13–14). So if you can come up with a plan between the two of you to try to combat these issues ahead of time they may save you stress in the long run. The relationship between the parents or care takers of the gifted child must be strong in order to aid in the success of raising the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
