In science fiction, technology is an omnipresent force in all stories. Whether robots are cleaning up
after us like The Jetsons, or our robot overlords like The Terminator, or anywhere in between on that
spectrum, technology can take on a variety of roles in different stories. Authors use technology in
many ways to vastly different ends. In the two stories I have chosen to look at, The Birthmark by
Nathaniel Hawthorne and There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradburry, technology is as
important to the story as any of the main characters. In The Birthmark, technology is used to induce
a sense of wonder from the reader, while in There Will Come Soft Rains, technology is used to
convey a sense of dread. Although both stories use technology to different effects, both of these
stories share one common trait with their portrayal of technology; in both instances, technology is
presented with a sense of irony. In The Birthmark, science and technology are the most important
thing in the world to Aylmer. Aylmer is a man of science, first and foremost. Aylmer has devoted his

Hollis's 1995 study focused on the effects of technology on young learner's enthusiasm for learning
science inside and outside of the classroom. This area of focus studied how implementing
technology to teach science concepts impacted student's motivation for learning science in the
classroom. The teacher researcher's study involves both teaching and learning as it focused on
properly training teachers how to use and implement technological tools and software. Once
teachers knew how to efficiently implement technology into their classrooms, they were able to
incorporate such technology as tools to enhance student's learning. Hollis (1995) notes "today's
middle school students have grown up in a technological world with television, electronic toys,
video games, VCRs, cellular phones and more" and "they are accustomed to receiving and
processing information through multi–sensory sources" (p. 1).
Research Questions The researcher states an answerable question in this action research project that

Over the past decade the use of instructional technologies has grown exponentially in the high
school setting. With the creation of cloud services and the increased accessibility of devices that can
access those cloud services through wireless internet connection, the general classroom can be
transformed into a portable lab for teachers to use with their students. Providing students access to
those devices within the class period requires teachers to become comfortable with the emersion of

in 1983–84, both performed in more than twenty countries, found that boys performed better than

Aside from all the opposing arguments made about space exploration there are lots of innovations
stemming from it. Exploration of space has helped create new technologies and advancements that
have directly benefitted our lives. The challenge of space exploration drives a seemingly never
ending effort to design ever more capable, resilient, and efficient technologies requiring the utmost
ingenuity.
Space exploration missions use the highest level of synchronism of humans and robots to achieve
ambitious exploration goals. Augmenting these capabilities of humans and robots for the

This article originated from the author 's presentation at the 2010 Cooley Law School Symposium
on the "CSI Effect." It reviews the results of two empirical studies of Michigan jurors in various
jurisdictions, which previously concluded that the "prosecutor version" of the so–called CSI effect
cannot be substantiated empirically. The article then describes merged data from the two studies and
the analysis of that merged data. The data supports the earlier suggestion of a "tech effect" based on
cultural changes, rather than any direct impact on certain television programs or genres. It is
suggested that while the prosecutor version of the CSI effect is a myth, there are increased juror
expectations that arise from the combination of the tech effect, the general media portrayal of
forensic evidence, and the misperception of attorneys and judges that the CSI effect does exist.
Possible justice system responses to that combined effect are described, and it is suggested that the
legal system must adapt itself to modern juror expectations rather than blaming jurors for
