My Goals To Become An Elementary School Teacher
Trip to College It has been my dream since Elementary School to become an Elementary School
teacher. The decision to attend college has not always been an easy decision. I have many goals to
obtain my college degree. I have had many conversations about attending college. Some
conversations being very helpful and persuasive, some being very negative and nerve wrecking. The
school that I chose to attend in the end was Alabama State University. I promised myself that this
school will make me the best teacher since I chose my favorite teacher. Choosing my career, that
was not entirely easy. Back in Elementary School, I had a couple of teachers that were very good to
me. They are who began to make my mind think and wonder about if this job would make a good
career for me. It was not only my Elementary School teachers who helped convince me. There were
some middle school teachers and a couple high school teachers who persuaded me. These teachers
taught me with passion in their hearts. There was nothing but patience and love in their teaching.
They taught me the different ways you can teach and get the lesson across to your students. I have
kept their ways of teaching in mind for the days when it is time to work towards my degree.
Watching my different teachers over the years have given me different reasons to want this career.
Becoming what I wanted to be was the main goal. The goal was always to become what I wanted to
no matter what it took. Being a teacher, I knew would be a

Martin Luther King Research Paper
Michael Luther King Jr, later known as Martin, was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929.
Martin attended Booker T. Washington High, a segregated school. ("Martin Luther King Jr") He was
able to skip the ninth and eleventh grade in high school and graduated at the age of fifteen. King
attended Moorehouse collegeCollege for undergraduate school. ("Martin Luther King Jr"). He later
enrolled to Boston University for graduate school. While in Boston, he met Coretta Scott. Martin
and Coretta Scott were married in 1953. Martin III, Yolanda, Dexter, and Bernice are their children.
("Martin Luther King Jr") Martin was known for his hard work in civil rights. His most famous
speech "I Have a Dream" was spoken in Washington on August28, 1963.("Martin Luther King Jr")
He received a Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. The right to vote was a big issue with the black people of
Selma, Alabama. African Americans made up at least half the population but only 2.1 percent were
able to vote. The march from Selma to Montgomery on the bridge was called a demonstration. On
Sunday, March 7,1965, there were 600 people planning to march but it did not end well.(Jakoubek
97) Alabama state troopers blocked the bridge and warned the marchers to leave. The marchers
refused because they wanted a peaceful march to be able to vote.(Jakoubek 98) The state troopers
released tear gas, trampled the marchers with horses, and beat them with sticks and whips.
(Jakoubek 98). They day became known as "Bloody Sunday". The marchers returned to the bridge
days later with Martin Luther King Jr. John Lewis was the key organizer. Voting rights were later
enabled.(Jakoubek 102) Martin was later shot to death in Memphis Tennessee at the Lorraine Hotel
on his balcony. ("Martin Luther King Jr"). His murderer was James Earl Ray. Martin Luther King Jr.
Made a huge impact on the civil rights movement. ("Martin Luther King Jr"). He made a huge
impact on America because without him I believe there would be no change and we could still be
segregated.
Rosa McCauley was born on February 4,1913. She was born in Tuskegee Alabama. Her
grandparents were former slaves, which is where her desire of change came from. Rosa attended

Wall Street Journal Reporter: Calvin Lee

Montgomery Resident
White Ethnicity
Attitude towards the Boycott: FOR
Famous for supporting the blacks, despite the tension between the two ethnicities and the majority
attitude of the whites opposing the boycott. Their lives were at total risk, from ostracism to threats
on their loves.
INTERVIEWER: Mr and Mrs Herbert, can you please tell us why you chose to be involved in the
Boycott?
SARAH HERBERT: "Well firstly, ethnicity didn't matter to me and my late husband, Woodson. We
both opposed the Jim Crow Laws, which had stood for 79 years since 1876. We both truly wanted
equality for those Negros, especially as we had ones close to us, e.g our house maids. We didn't
understand why even when they were paying the same amount as us whites to ride on the buses that
they had to get off the bus, enter through the rear exit and sit at the back. They deserved to have
equal access to any part of the bus they wanted. It just seemed bizarre and it made them look
inferior. During the boycott, when the community taxi effort by the 18 negro owned bus companies
in Montgomery was halted by the council for it's 'too low' fares of 10¢ instead of the usual 45¢, the
blacks began their own carpooling initiative to help each other get around. There were around 300
cars used at the time for this task, and I decided along with my neighbour and a few other of my
white friends that if we were going to

John Lewis March Character Analysis
John Lewis' Turning Points
Growing up during the civil rights era for many presented a world of harsh segregation and
inequality. The graphic novel March, written by John Lewis and coauthor Andrew Aydin with
illustrations by Nate Powell, provides the reader a glimpse into the life of a young John Lewis.
Coming from a humble beginning as the child of a farmer in Alabama, he later became a prominent
leader of the civil rights movement. While there are many turning points throughout John Lewis'
life, four critically influenced his direction and philosophy by establishing a sense of purpose, and
creating opportunities that promoted growth and development of character.
The first turning point in John Lewis' life came at an early age during the trip ... Show more content

His childhood trip North with his uncle, being introduced to and inspired by Dr. King after hearing
his sermon on the radio, returning to Nashville after being unable to attend Troy State, and finally
his first arrest, all influenced his direction and philosophy towards the methods he would implement
in his pursuit of equality. Further, they paved the way for opportunities that would lead him to
becoming a prominent leader of the civil rights movement. And whether you believe in coincidence,
fate or the "spirit of history"; it's hard to deny that these moments were critical in shaping the man

Black Seamstress : Rosa Parks And The Civil Rights Movement
By refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama, city bus in 1955, black
seamstress Rosa Parks (1913–2005) helped initiate the civil rights movement in the United States.
The leaders of the local black community organized a bus boycott that began the day Parks was
convicted of violating the segregation laws but are her effects held up today? I say yes Rosa Parks
would be happy in the way things changes because of the peaceful protest and the way the ¨whites¨
act.
Rosa McCauley was born in Tuskegee, Alabama, on February 4, 1913. She moved with her parents,
James and Leona, to Pine Level, Alabama, at the age 2 to reside with Leona's parents.Rosa moved to
Montgomery, Alabama, at age 11 and eventually attended high school there, a laboratory school at
the Alabama State Teachers' College for Negroes. She left at 16, in 11th grade because she needed to
care for her grandmother and, shortly thereafter, her chronically ill mother. ¨In 1932, at 19, she
married Raymond Parks, a self–educated man 10 years her senior who worked as a barber and was a
long–time member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He
supported Rosa in her efforts to earn her high–school diploma, which she ultimately did the
following year.¨(Newsmakers) even at a young age of 19 she supported african American rights and
dedicated her life to education and caring for people but nothing prepared her for what was going to

The Complexity Of John Wayne In Film
John Wayne (1907 – 1979), an iconic American actor, director, and producer, known for playing
heroes in westerns on the big screen for fifty years. He won an Academy Award for True Grit (1969)
and is consider one of the top leading actors during Hollywood's classic period. In Red River,
Wayne stars in the unusual role of Thomas Dunson, who borders on good and bad tendencies
throughout the film. "Wayne, often typecast, is given a tortured, conflicted character to play" (Ebert
392), and does remarkably well portraying someone with questionable values. Wayne is sometimes
considered more of a natural force than an actor, but here his understated acting is right on the
money; the critic Joseph McBride says that John Ford, who had directed Wayne many times, saw
Red River and told Hawks, "I never knew the big son of a bitch could act" (Ebert 393). Some of
Wayne's best films include Stagecoach (1939), Angel and the Badman (1947), She Wore a Yellow
Ribbon (1949), Sands of Iwo Jima (1949), The Searchers (1956), Rio Bravo (1959), The Man Who
Shot Liberty Valance (1962), and True Grit (1969). "Footage from Red River was later incorporated

Afterwards, I was surprised by the complexity of Wayne's character of Dunson (a welcome chance)
and how dark it was. The give away was subtle, besides his obvious rude manners, but the Dunson's
attire changed to darker clothes, and his cowboy hat went from white to black. The change in
appearance (much like Star Wars' Anakin Skywalker transformation into Darth Vader) is more than
just dark clothing, it symbolizes the lack of goodness and virtues now harden by pain and lost love,
and a burden Dunson must bare. I fully enjoyed this movie for its moodiness, dueling characters,
and Howard Hawk's great

Everyone wants the perfect mate, but very few easily find him or her. You want to find want that is
both visually appealing and have appealing qualities. You need to try to find a perfect balance
between the two. It can be hard but don't give up. Try to mentally list the traits that you find the
most attractive. If I could choose my perfect mate she would be very kind. She would be able to take
good care of me when I am ill. She wouldn't be ridiculously tall or short. She would have long and
beautiful hair that would be light in color. She would have to have a sense of humor. I would like her
to be talkative. I would want her to be a loving spouse. My mother on the other hand would want my
mate to be fun and talkative. She would also want

Beliefs And Traditions Of Those Who Came Before Me
Here is why it is important to know the beliefs and traditions of those who came before us, and what
could happen if we ignore it .
When you know what happened in the past with your family, you won't have to make the same
mistakes they did, and if you do know and find a better solution. When you know what happened in
the past with your family you can make sure your other family members and friends know so they
don't make the same mistakes, and you're being a good person.
When you know the beliefs and traditions of your family, you can continue them so the next
generation knows, and you keep the family going.

their good past or better their bad past, and keep the flow and set a good example for your kids, and

he wanted to be a better person and have a better life.
That is why it is important to know your family's beliefs, and traditions and to know your family's
past.
Here are my thoughts and feelings about the stories and how they impacted my life. First, this
impacted my life because i had never thought about my family's past and what it was supposed to
mean to me. My thoughts and feelings about the story as we continued they have greatly expanded, I
have so much respect for people and things. I feel that I take for granted what I have, and mistreat
things and people that I have lost the meaning of everything, like the person in " I Am a Native

Small Change By Malcolm Gladwell
Malcolm Gladwell the author of "Small Change" Why the Revolution Will Not Be Retweeted.
Educates readers about Civil Rights movement events from the past, and the effects of social media
in today's time. Technology has evolved over the years, giving birth to social media. Social media is
wonderful for a lot of things, but is social media an effective resource for activism? In the article,
Gladwell starts off by telling the story about four friends. Their names were David Richmond,
Franklin McCain, Ezell Blair, and Joseph McNeil. The four friends were freshmen of North
Carolina A&T a black college located in Greensboro. February 1, 1960 at approximately 4:30pm the
four college students went to lunch at Woolworths. Woolworth was located in downtown
Greensboro. There scenery inside the diner was a L shaped counter that could set up to 60 people
with a stand up snack bar at the end. The bar was for the whites and the snack bar was for the
blacks. The four friends set at the counter and Ezell Blair asked the waitress for a cup of coffee. The
waitress replied "we don't serve negroes here". This statement started a civil rights movement. The
four students could of just left and found somewhere else to have lunch, but instead they returned on
the next day with Twenty–seven men and four women. They began to protest and preform a sit–in at
the diner. On the third day the number of protesters moved up to eighty people. The fourth day the
protesters numbered three hundred, including

Apathy–Mantra–Death; Apathy–Empathy–Healing William D. Tammeus, a journalist, once wrote
that "You don't really understand human nature unless you know why a child on a merry–go–round
will wave at his parents every time around – and why his parents will always wave back." This
quote beautifully paints a picture of the natural love present between a parent and child. However,
sometimes this love becomes obscured and a disconnection occurs that prevents the parent from
empathy. The stories "Two Kinds, and "The Rocking Horse Winner" show that a parent's lack of
empathy impacts the child's search for the self in the following phases: first, the search for the self is

I pictured this prodigy part of me as many different images, and I tried each one on for size" (Tan
405). However as the time passes by, the mother's tests driven by a lack of empathy begins to
suffocate and stunt the search for the self within Jing–mei. She recalls, "And after seeing, once
again, my mother's disappointed face, something inside me began to die" (Tan 406). As her search
for the self is suffocated to its threshold, Jing–mei stands in front of the mirror. Here her search for
the self is completely buried and replaced with mantras, "filled with lots of wont's. I won't let her
change me... I won't be what I'm not" (Tan 406).
In the second stage, the mantra intensifies and this can be observed in Paul as his mother continues
to deprive him of her empathy. While Paul's search for the self is deeply buried, his initial mantra
does get him the luck he is searching for. He wins five thousand pounds to secretly give to his
mother. This is an important and emotional gift to her because "He was very anxious to see the
effect of the birthday letter..." (Lawrence 359). This is an open window for Paul's healing and
recovery of the self if she could muster some emotion and empathy for his efforts. Instead, she
leaves him still deprived. "When Paul watched her face as she read the letters... her face hardened
and became more expressionless" (Lawrence 359). Asking for one last chance to see emotion
capable of love and empathy on her mother's face, Paul asks,

Selma Book Vs Book Essay
The conflicts met between the Civil Rights Movement protesters and the white people of the South
were incredibly gruesome. While peace and equality for African Americans was the driving force of
the protests, violence and inhuman resistance was the force for the white people. In the March
Trilogy Books, written by John Lewis and Andrew Aydin, and in the movie Selma, written by Paul
Webb and directed by Ava DuVernay, we are given a glimpse of these troubling times during the
1960's. The tone was very dark, harsh, and violent. Because voting rights and equality were
important to them, the mass of marchers continued their protests despite the beatings and cruelty
they faced. Although there were horrendous acts made against the African ... Show more content on

opposition and met with conflict, they continued their protests. The books and the movie displayed
conflict throughout. One example is during the first attempt to cross the bridge, when the marchers
were met by the Alabama State Troopers. It went very dark, very quick, as the troopers barged
towards them, making this day known as "Bloody Sunday", March 7, 1965. When asked for his
comments in the movie by the press after the brutal attack on the marchers, King says "While
rageful violence continues towards the unarmed people of Selma, while they are assaulted with tear
gas and batons like enemy in a war, no citizen of this country can call themselves blameless, for we
all bear a responsibility for our fellow man. I am appealing to men and women of God and goodwill
everywhere, white, black and otherwise. If you believe all are created equal, come to Selma. Join us.
Join our march against injustice and inhumanity. We need you to stand with us". The second attempt
to cross the bridge on March 9, 1965 brought clergy, men, and women from all over to join. But
faced conflict as well, this time between Martin Luther King Jr, and the marchers themselves.
However, there was a major difference regarding this attempt to cross, between the books and the
movie. In the books, the marchers were met on the bridge by a Federal Official who

Analysis Of I Have A Dream Speech
The year was 1963, as the chaos of segregation was unfolding in the Southern states, Governor
George C. Wallace and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, are at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement.
In the beginning of the year, Governor Wallace will be addressing his constituents with his well–
known, "Segregation Now, Segregation Forever" speech. Nevertheless, it will be seven months later,
that Dr. King will convey his message in his famous, "I Have a Dream" speech. Individually, they
deliver historical speeches concerning civil rights, however, the dialogue encompasses completely
different messages. Comparatively, the two speeches will be presented side by side using Kairos,

to Ethos. Governor Wallace attended the University of Alabama and graduated with a law degree,
which soon after he joined the US Army Air Corp. and was involved in a combat mission over
Japan. Upon returning, he became an Assistant States Attorney, and later a judge of the Third
Judicial Circuit of Alabama. George C. Wallace, campaigned for the Governor's seat in Alabama and
much to his dismay, he lost to his opponent who was a segregationist. Be that as it may, four years
later his decision was to run again, but this time he was endorsed by the Ku Klux Klan, who helped
him obtain the Governorship.
Martin Luther King Jr., was from a middle–class family with strong Baptist beliefs. Surprisingly, at
the young age of 15, he attended Morehouse College and later enter Boston University. Dr. King
obtained his pastoral and doctorate degrees, and appeared that he followed in the footsteps of his
grandfather and father to become a Baptist Pastor. While living in Montgomery, Alabama, a small
group of civil rights activists launched a boycott against the public bus system. Unbeknownst to Dr.
King, the activist would choose him as the representative for their cause. This would launch the
beginning of Dr. King's ongoing struggle to end segregation.

Lewis asked, "How could our quest for human dignity spawn such evil?" (3:16). Another example
that they both showed in common was the tension portrayed at the time of the first attempt to march
across the Edmond Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. Lewis and Hosea Williams led the marchers.
As they were walking across the bridge, Williams asked Lewis, "Can you swim?" (Lewis and Aydin

Analysis Of All The Missing Girls
Is it monsters from the dark, mysterious woods, jealous ex–boyfriends, or ditching town? These are
all theories as to why two teenage girls from the, supposedly, postcard–worthy town have
disappeared in the past ten years. In All the Missing Girls, Nic is back in her hometown, for a
sojourn for the first time since her friend, Corrine, disappeared ten years ago, and now Annaleise
Carter is missing. The memories of Corrine's case begin to resurface as alibis, motives, and
connections between the cases are questioned. In a small town like Cooley Ridge, rumors are the
plague, spreading everywhere not caring whose lives they ruin. (☺ Metaphor) I finished reading
The Woman in Cabin 10, and the resolution is that Richard commits suicide after killing his real
wife, and his fake wife and Lo both survive. The three most important searches in All the Missing
Girls are the search for connections between the two cases of the missing girls, the search for
Corinne, and Tyler's search for love.
The search for connections between the cases leads to Tyler being questioned as a suspect, and Nic
going on a mission to solve the cases. Tyler is suspected because he is dating Annaleise. He claims
they broke up the night before she disappears, which heightens suspicions. He also ditches town
after Annaleise goes missing. Nic thinks, "Tyler was starting to feel like a ghost, like if I blinked for
too long, he might slip away for good" (Miranda 171). He is fleeing the investigation. By

Speech About Billy Cheeseburger
Billy Cheeseburger
Do you want to hear a story? Oh, you're going to hear a story alright a story that you will most likely
think of your whole life. This is the story of Billy Cheeseburger.
I grew up in Southern Alabama as a slave to an extremely rude owner with my mother in the 1840s.
We tried escaping hundreds of times, but we always managed a way to get caught. Due to our
relentless efforts in trying to escape, we would get whipped extremely hard, but I didn't care as long
as I was with my momma I knew that I was safe. Then that terrible day happened our owner
informed us there was a slave auction in Montgomery Alabama, 10 miles away from our home in
Richmond, Alabama. Like any other greedy white man, our owner came to my momma and told her
that she was going to be auctioned for money. Oh how much I cried that day. That night I tried
convincing my mother to escape in the morning and go to Fort Washington which was right across
Montgomery but my momma just wouldn't budge. She said that "They will find me and try and sell
me to another owner far away from you and you know yo momma can't run fast". To make me
happy, my momma told me that she was just going to be gone for a few weeks and that she will
eventually come back and that the two of us will escape to Fort Washington.
The Decision
I went with my momma to the auction where there were a lot of white men shouting about how
much money they would spend for a certain slave. My momma was up next for auctioning she said

1965 Voting Rights Act
I think there were many events that helped the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act to pass some I
would not characterize as fortunate.
I would point out that Television was now in people's homes, news came more instantaneous than
before, the death of a young black man named Jimmie Lee Jackson's, and Bloody Sunday.
The first event that leads us to Selma is the encounter with Sheriff Jim Clark who on the town hall
steps stops blacks from entering the building thus not allowing them to register to vote. This event
leads the Sheriff to club a black man on the steps of city hall making him fall down and what
appears to be him now unconscious on the ground. This was all filmed by a news organization.

Here we see the irony of men's decisions the decision to march by King his uncertain feelings about
the march and that of Johnson also not wanting the event to take place. This is why I believe the
Selma march was a major change for the civil rights movement as a whole. It galvanized most
American of the plight of the African American in the south. This also gave government official
some courage to vote for this type of legislation.
The march its self was peaceful on the side of those marching however the police where by no

Analytical Essay On The Movie Selma
The United States of America, a country viewed by many as glorious and opportunistic, endured
moments in history that shall never be forgotten. Since the beginning of the Civil War in the 1800s,
the act to end slavery was gruesome and horrifying. A war was fought between the free and slave
states to eradicate slavery in the country for ever. In the year 1865, slavery was abolished,
nonetheless, the evil in many Confederate cities and states was still alive. Selma is a breath–taking
movie about Martin Luther King Jr. and his fight against this evil. With death threats sent to his
home, and his own followers beaten by troopers, Dr. King never backed down. Having the right to
vote is exceedingly vital in having a voice in the government, and the kinds of laws and bills that
should be passed. In the beginning of this movie, an African American woman prepares her
documents to be allowed to vote. When she hands the documents to the white worker, he begins
questioning the woman. His main incentive is simply not give her the right to vote. The movie states
that fifty percent of Selma is African American, however, merely two percent are allowed to vote. It
is the power held by white officials that denied their vote. Many people took to the streets to
peacefully protests this injustice and inequality that loomed in the system. As stated both in the
movie and the New York Review article, people have suffered and died for the right to vote. For
instance, a young man named Jimmie

Martin Luther King And The Civil Rights Movement
Martin Luther King remains one of the most controversial historical figures of the 20th century.
Historians and modern politicians alike, challenge his contributions to the Civil Rights Movement
and the legitimacy of his leadership. While King is traditionally presented as a leader of the
movement, Ella Baker, an African American Civil Rights activists, questions this convention and
claims "the [Civil Rights] movement made Martin." Furthermore, often portrayed as the decisive
factor of social change, King's leadership and significance in the Civil Rights Movement is largely
overemphasized and his exaggerated historical importance, detracts from the myriad of social
factors and local movements that propelled social change. Although Martin ... Show more content

Moreover, the true start of the Civil Rights Movement began with the Emmett Till Case, as it was a
tipping point for the Civil Rights movement and revealed the discrimination that oppressed African–
American. Media was a medium in which African Americans can expose the evil and oppression of
racial discrimination in America, and the media was to which King owed much of his social
influence and publicity.
Martin Luther king played a central role in mobilising African American Communities for national
activism through his leadership in religious communities and activism such as the National Council
of Churches and the Montgomery Improvement Association; however, his leadership in the
movement was largely shaped by local grassroot movements, which played far greater roles in
national protest and activism as demonstrated by Nashville sit–ins and boycotts. Similarly to the
events in Montgomery, the Nashville Sit– ins were led primarily by students and local activists. The
grassroots leaders and students who founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee acted
upon their own initiative, and although the movement often called upon King's leadership and
oratory skills, the movement was primarily guided by self–reliant grassroots leaders. Furthermore,
the students had other sources of tactical and ideological inspiration such as Rosa parks and E.D.

Examples Of Bravery In To Kill A Mockingbird
True bravery is standing up for what you believe in. Does anyone else agree with that statement?
Everyone is born with true bravery but it's up to them if they will show it and a couple did. For
example Atticus Finch and Martin Luther king jr, they both stood up for what they believe in and
what was right. They never backed down they had the confidence to stand up and they did, stood tall
and brave. Atticus Finch stood up for Tom Robinson. Martin Luther King Jr stood up for black

The Trials And Tribulations Between The March Trilogy...
The Trials and Tribulations between the March Trilogy Books and the Movie Selma As Martin
Luther King, Jr. once said, "The nonviolent approach does not immediately change the heart of the
oppressor. It first does something to the hearts and souls of those committed to it. It gives them new
self–respect; it calls up resources of strength and courage they did not know they had". (King) The
conflicts met between the Civil Rights Movement protesters and the white people of the South were
incredibly gruesome. While peace and equality for African Americans was the driving force of the
protests, violence and inhuman resistance was the force of the white people. In the March Trilogy

Lewis and Hosea Williams led the marchers. As they were walking across the bridge, Williams
asked Lewis, "Can you swim?" (Lewis and Aydin 3:197) as if to insinuate that going over the bridge
may be what was to come, not knowing what they were to face at the end of the bridge. Where a
crowd of resisters was waiting for them. Even though the marchers faced violent opposition and met
with conflict, they continued their demonstrations. The books and the movie displayed controversy
throughout. One example is during the first attempt to cross the bridge, when the marchers were met
by the Alabama State Troopers. It went very dark, very quick, as the troopers barged towards them,
making this day known as "Bloody Sunday", March 7, 1965. When asked for his comments in the
movie by the press after the merciless attack on the marchers, King says "While rageful violence
continues towards the unarmed people of Selma, while they are assaulted with tear gas and batons
like enemy in a war, no citizen of this country can call themselves blameless, for we all bear a
responsibility for our fellow man. I am appealing to men and women of God and goodwill

The Civil Rights Movement : The New York Times Newspaper...
In 1960 the Civil Rights Movement was beginning to gain a lot strength. Many civil rights leaders
put a full–page ad in the New York Times newspaper company. The ad was to raise money to help
civil rights leaders, including Martin Luther King, Jr. There were sixty popular
Americans who signed it. The ad put in the paper was describing how " an unprecedented wave of
terror" was rising with police actions against peaceful demonstrators in Montgomery,
Alabama. The ad was mostly accurate, but a few of the charges in it were not true. An example is
that the ad said police "ringed" a college campus where many protesters were, but this charge was
completely exaggerated. The ad also read the false statement: "When the entire student body

The background to New York Times v. Sullivan is pretty complex and has a lot to it. The city of
Montgomery, Alabama, was already considered to be in civic stress when The New York
Times published an ad by the name of "Heed Their Rising Voices" on March 29, 1960. February
25, about 35 students from the Alabama State College, which was an all–black school, were buying
food in a snack bar in the basement of the Montgomery County Courthouse. They were taken into
custody and arrested. The day after the arrest Governor John Patterson, who was once the officio
chairman for the state board of education, demanded for the expulsion of the African
American students from the public college. Two days after the expulsion almost all of the 800
students that attended Alabama State marched to the state capitol to protest against Patterson's
actions with the students. While state and Montgomery police stood by, members of the Ku Klux
Klan wielding baseball bats assaulted the students of the college. The attack was unpunished even
though the Montgomery Advertiser produced and printed pictures of the incident, with several
clearly identified members. (Urofsky pg. 2)

Analysis Of The March By John Lewis
The graphic novel trilogy, The March, tells a series of events that happen in John Lewis's life for the
better and for the worse. Throughout the books, he is faced with challenges that test his ability to
stay true to his beliefs. When Lewis was a child, he received his first Bible from his uncle which
was what sparked his heavy faith in God. During his spiritual journey, he began to listen to the
teachings of MLK Jr. who impacted his life greatly. Lewis became the SNCC's newest executive
coordinating committee which opened his eyes to all the violence that was really apparent at the
time. John Lewis, even from a very young age wanted to become a preacher. "I'll never forget my

He applied the principles of the church to what was happening now, today. It was called the social
gospel... and I felt like he was preaching directly to me." (Lewis and Aydin 1:56). MLK Jr. sparked
John Lewis's love to fight for what's right to him personally, for example, his acceptance into Troy
State. "But if you want to go, we'll help... we'll raise the money to file those suites, and we'll support
you all the way. But you must keep in mind... your parents could lose their jobs. Your family home
could be bombed or burned." (Lewis and Aydin 1:71). He and MLK Jr. worked on many projects
together as it was in both of their interests. Lewis became very involved with non–violent protesting
and everything MLK Jr. introduced him to. Everything the two of them did was always associated
with the teachings of Christ. "His words liberated me. I thought this is it... this is the way out."
(Lewis and Aydin 1:78). MLK Jr. was in charge of a group called SNCC. In that group, he dealt with
the religious aspects of the racism in the country. John Lawson was asked to become head of the
executive coordinating committee which meant he would be even more involved in the group. "I
saw myself as a doer. I never had any thoughts of being chairman... and I was elected chairman of
SNCC." (Lewis and Aydin 2:142). He went to campaign after campaign and gathered the knowledge
that things were only getting more and more violent. "The black masses are restless, Mr. President...

Why Iceland Is Considered One Of The Safest Countries
On Earth there are one hundred ninety–five countries, and they are very diverse. There are hundreds,
if not thousands of religions in the world. Many countries have the same religion but there can be a
major difference between them. Religion is not the only difference between countries, including
food, laws, healthcare, cultural beliefs, weather, and the list goes on and on. There is no difference
when it comes to comparing the community in my home town, Akureyri, and Faulkner's community.
When I came to Faulkner I got a shock, and I know now why Iceland is considered one of the safest
countries in the world.
In Iceland the main religion is Christianity. The population of three hundred thirty thousand, divides
up in to, 80% Christianity and 20% that have other religion, or are atheist. According to a survey
from 2010, the average Icelander goes to church four times every year. Counting every time they go
to a funeral, wedding, confirmation and baptism. At Faulkner University I would say that at least
one–third of students here go to church every Sunday. Icelandic education system is put up so that
every child learns about Christianity. Addition to that they have to learn the foundation of main
religions in the world; Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism. In Iceland an ethics class is
mandatory, we learn that there is nothing that says that we are any better than the rest of the world.
Nothing says that our believes, and culture is more correct than in other countries.

Likewise, Dr. King stood in a place of great significance. Here, in front of the statue of President
Lincoln, is where he will present his infamous "I Have a Dream" speech and it is evident of the great
significance it represents. It was in 1863 that President Lincoln fought to abolish slavery and by
coincidence, one hundred years later, Dr. King will be addressing more than 200,000 demonstrators
fighting the same fight. On this day Dr. King will articulately responds to Governor Wallace's
speech that had taken place seven months prior. As the prominent Dr. King put it, "Now is the time
to make justice a reality for all of God's children" (archives.gov). In other words, Dr. King is stating,
that equality and fair justice should not be based on, ethnicity, color, or status, but in essence we are
all created equal and ought to live harmoniously. Throughout these two speeches, Dr. King and
Governor Wallace, both use strong evidence to strengthen their credibility and appeal to Ethos.

The 1950's were a time in which televised news sources were not as frequent and plentiful as they

Montgomery, known as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, shows just how effective media can be when

The Impact Of Internet On Public Opinion On Society
Today, the Internet is where society can find any type information, including the news worldwide.
Companies, advertisers and online systems have personalized Internet experiences to draw in users.
In other words, users are forced to read certain topics based on their search history and are
recommended more of the same topics. This causes a large impact on public opinion in society, but
the ability to find diverse content is more of an issue. The challenges to overcome diversity include,
the user 's motivation, awareness and ability to seek for diverse content (Hoffman et al. 1). With the
obstacles of filtering and web programming, are users receiving all the different viewpoints? Media

Based on the user's search history, filtering is applied in the system. Programming would find a way
to determine the search, in some way, similar to previous searches. Hoffman discusses more that,
"The awareness challenge lies in users ' inability or difficulty in experiencing diversity due to a lack
of knowledge about the production, filtering, and consumption mechanisms at play" (3). This forces
users to view only what they are given. It will have viewers looking at stuff based on their previous
searches. With this in mind, users awareness of different content is becoming nearly impossible if
filtering is applied.
The media is becoming more specific from large companies such as Google or Facebook, that can
draw us to different sides with filtering technology for profit benefits. In Engin Bozdag's 2013
article, he shares that personalization is a major aspect for advertisers, and can be used for online
targeting for potential customers (107). There are more online product purchases than ever before,
and advertisers design these online personalization systems to persuade customers (Li and Unger
623). Advertisers collect customer data to design recommendations. Bozdag also adds, "Facebook
uses various profile elements to display targeted advertising including age, gender, marital status,
and education" (98). These companies earn large profit with advertisements because of filtering and
personalization. In addition, it

Rosa Parks And The Freedom Movement Essay
Segregation is the action or state of setting someone or something apart from other or thing or being
set apart. Segregation started in 1867 . Segregation is hard to deal with. At this time African
Americans did not have as much freedom as they do now. They had to basically walk around on
eggs shells because if they did not it could have got them into big trouble. They did not have any
rights they would be taken to prison for a simple thing of standing up for the right that they "were
born" with. A person who had a lot to do with the change of that time is Rosa Parks. Rosa Parks was
born February 4, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. Her full name Rosa Louise McCauley. Her mother a
teacher and her father was a carpenter. At the age of 2 years old she was baptized which led to her
growing up a devoted member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Rosa grew up a sick

Gladwell has made an interesting argument about how people become successful. In this paper, I

The Success Of Martin Luther King Jr.
There were many great leaders of the civil rights movement. Just a few are Martin Luther King Jr.,
Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, and Andrew Goodman. These people helped make the civil rights
movement become a reality and a success. These people risked and sometimes lost their lives in the
name of freedom and equality. Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered famously for his speeches

The policy is applied various ways at Downtown Browne's Emergency Shelter. Two of the ways the

What Is The Montgomery Bus Boycott's Story?
"The story of the Montgomery Bus Boycott is often told as a simple, happy tale of the "little people"
triumphing over the seemingly insurmountable forces of evil. The truth is a little less romantic and a
little more complex" (Cozzens). In all reality, it was more so a living disaster that ending in
tremendous joy to those involved. On December 1st, 1955 all hell broke loose between the blacks
and the whites, as for the Montgomery Bus Boycott had officially began. As I got on the bus
heading home from my first day as a dentist, assisting Dr. Moon in Shakespeare, AL, an older
African American women got on the bus. I took my seat in the first chair that was available near the
front. The back of the bus was of course filled with your average African American, and i had no
problem with that. As the lady entered the front of the bus, she looked around for a place to sit near
the back. Considering there were few whites on the bus, she sat in the row in front ... Show more

She looked very tired and she seemed like she was just unconditionally zoned out. I figured she had
just had a long day at work and would soon realize the white was standing and offer him her seat.
Unfortunately that wasn't the case. As the bus driver began to yell at her, as well as the three other
blacks that were sitting with her, she continued to ignore him. "The angry bus drivers puts on the
emergency break, get out of his seat and marches over... He demands she move to the back of the
bus. When she doesn't, he leaves the bus and returns with a policeman" (Rosa Parks Arrested for
Violating Segregation Laws). I soon learned the woman's name was Mrs. Rosa Parks. She was a
Civil Rights Activist. Once this was addressed, I wasn't as worried for her because I knew she had

The Collection That I Am A Building Essay
The collection that I am going to be building will be focusing on children's books that feature
racially diverse main characters and or themes. The focus of this collection proposal is to bring
books with diverse characters onto the shelves and make them easily accessible and visible to young
children and families. I was provided with an allocated 5,000 dollars Canadian to spend on this
special collection. My initial goal was to select books with people of colour as the main characters
exclusively. The issue with this plan is there are lots of books about African Canadian children but
not very many about Indigenous children. Due to this, I expanded my search criteria to include
books featuring diverse characters where there were also people of colour featured as secondary
characters. By expanding my search, I was able to feature more racially diverse characters. The first
step in my selection process was searching online for lists of books published by organizations,
schools and blogs that featured racially diverse main characters. I used Amazon extensively once I
had found titles of interest. Amazon provided me with the ISBN numbers to search as specifically as
possible and offered similar title suggestions. I cross referenced the titles through the Halifax Public
Libraries Discover Catalog to see if they were already owned. My goal was to select new titles so I
was not building a collection that already existed somewhere else. I paid particular attention to
books

My Goals To Become An Elementary School Teacher

  • 1. My Goals To Become An Elementary School Teacher Trip to College It has been my dream since Elementary School to become an Elementary School teacher. The decision to attend college has not always been an easy decision. I have many goals to obtain my college degree. I have had many conversations about attending college. Some conversations being very helpful and persuasive, some being very negative and nerve wrecking. The school that I chose to attend in the end was Alabama State University. I promised myself that this school will make me the best teacher since I chose my favorite teacher. Choosing my career, that was not entirely easy. Back in Elementary School, I had a couple of teachers that were very good to me. They are who began to make my mind think and wonder about if this job would make a good career for me. It was not only my Elementary School teachers who helped convince me. There were some middle school teachers and a couple high school teachers who persuaded me. These teachers taught me with passion in their hearts. There was nothing but patience and love in their teaching. They taught me the different ways you can teach and get the lesson across to your students. I have kept their ways of teaching in mind for the days when it is time to work towards my degree. Watching my different teachers over the years have given me different reasons to want this career. Becoming what I wanted to be was the main goal. The goal was always to become what I wanted to no matter what it took. Being a teacher, I knew would be a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The right to vote was a big issue with the black people of Selma, Alabama. African Americans made up at least half the population but only 2.1 percent were able to vote. The march from Selma to Montgomery on the bridge was called a demonstration. On Sunday, March 7,1965, there were 600 people planning to march but it did not end well.(Jakoubek 97) Alabama state troopers blocked the bridge and warned the marchers to leave. The marchers refused because they wanted a peaceful march to be able to vote.(Jakoubek 98) The state troopers released tear gas, trampled the marchers with horses, and beat them with sticks and whips. (Jakoubek 98). They day became known as "Bloody Sunday". The marchers returned to the bridge days later with Martin Luther King Jr. John Lewis was the key organizer. Interview 1 Wall Street Journal Reporter: Calvin Lee Sarah Herbert and spouse, Woodson (Couple) Montgomery Resident White Ethnicity Attitude towards the Boycott: FOR Famous for supporting the blacks, despite the tension between the two ethnicities and the majority attitude of the whites opposing the boycott. Their lives were at total risk, from ostracism to threats on their loves. INTERVIEWER: Mr and Mrs Herbert, can you please tell us why you chose to be involved in the Boycott? SARAH HERBERT: "Well firstly, ethnicity didn't matter to me and my late husband, Woodson. We both opposed the Jim Crow Laws, which had stood for 79 years since 1876. We both truly wanted equality for those Negros, especially as we had ones close to us, e.g our house maids. We didn't understand why even when they were paying the same amount as us whites to ride on the buses that they had to get off the bus, enter through the rear exit and sit at the back. They deserved to have equal access to any part of the bus they wanted. It just seemed bizarre and it made them look inferior. During the boycott, when the community taxi effort by the 18 negro owned bus companies in Montgomery was halted by the council for it's 'too low' fares of 10¢ instead of the usual 45¢, the blacks began their own carpooling initiative to help each other get around. There were around 300 cars used at the time for this task, and I decided along with my neighbour and a few other of my white friends that if we were going to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The graphic novel March, written by John Lewis and coauthor Andrew Aydin with illustrations by Nate Powell, provides the reader a glimpse into the life of a young John Lewis. Coming from a humble beginning as the child of a farmer in Alabama, he later became a prominent leader of the civil rights movement. Black Seamstress : Rosa Parks And The Civil Rights Movement By refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama, city bus in 1955, black seamstress Rosa Parks (1913–2005) helped initiate the civil rights movement in the United States. The leaders of the local black community organized a bus boycott that began the day Parks was convicted of violating the segregation laws but are her effects held up today? I say yes Rosa Parks would be happy in the way things changes because of the peaceful protest and the way the ¨whites¨ act. Rosa McCauley was born in Tuskegee, Alabama, on February 4, 1913. She moved with her parents, James and Leona, to Pine Level, Alabama, at the age 2 to reside with Leona's parents.Rosa moved to Montgomery, Alabama, at age 11 and eventually attended high school there, a laboratory school at the Alabama State Teachers' College for Negroes. She left at 16, in 11th grade because she needed to care for her grandmother and, shortly thereafter, her chronically ill mother. ¨In 1932, at 19, she married Raymond Parks, a self–educated man 10 years her senior who worked as a barber and was a long–time member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He supported Rosa in her efforts to earn her high–school diploma, which she ultimately did the following year.¨(Newsmakers) even at a young age of 19 she supported african American rights and dedicated her life to education and caring for people but nothing prepared her for what was going to happen next in life. • 11. The Complexity Of John Wayne In Film John Wayne (1907 – 1979), an iconic American actor, director, and producer, known for playing heroes in westerns on the big screen for fifty years. He won an Academy Award for True Grit (1969) and is consider one of the top leading actors during Hollywood's classic period. In Red River, Wayne stars in the unusual role of Thomas Dunson, who borders on good and bad tendencies throughout the film. "Wayne, often typecast, is given a tortured, conflicted character to play" (Ebert 392), and does remarkably well portraying someone with questionable values. Wayne is sometimes considered more of a natural force than an actor, but here his understated acting is right on the money; the critic Joseph McBride says that John Ford, who had directed Wayne many times, saw Red River and told Hawks, "I never knew the big son of a bitch could act" (Ebert 393). Some of Wayne's best films include Stagecoach (1939), Angel and the Badman (1947), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), Sands of Iwo Jima (1949), The Searchers (1956), Rio Bravo (1959), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), and True Grit (1969). The give away was subtle, besides his obvious rude manners, but the Dunson's attire changed to darker clothes, and his cowboy hat went from white to black. The change in appearance (much like Star Wars' Anakin Skywalker transformation into Darth Vader) is more than just dark clothing, it symbolizes the lack of goodness and virtues now harden by pain and lost love, and a burden Dunson must bare. • 17. Small Change By Malcolm Gladwell Malcolm Gladwell the author of "Small Change" Why the Revolution Will Not Be Retweeted. Educates readers about Civil Rights movement events from the past, and the effects of social media in today's time. Technology has evolved over the years, giving birth to social media. Social media is wonderful for a lot of things, but is social media an effective resource for activism? In the article, Gladwell starts off by telling the story about four friends. Their names were David Richmond, Franklin McCain, Ezell Blair, and Joseph McNeil. The four friends were freshmen of North Carolina A&T a black college located in Greensboro. February 1, 1960 at approximately 4:30pm the four college students went to lunch at Woolworths. Woolworth was located in downtown Greensboro. There scenery inside the diner was a L shaped counter that could set up to 60 people with a stand up snack bar at the end. The bar was for the whites and the snack bar was for the blacks. The four friends set at the counter and Ezell Blair asked the waitress for a cup of coffee. The waitress replied "we don't serve negroes here". This statement started a civil rights movement. The four students could of just left and found somewhere else to have lunch, but instead they returned on the next day with Twenty–seven men and four women. They began to protest and preform a sit–in at the diner. On the third day the number of protesters moved up to eighty people. The fourth day the protesters numbered three hundred, including ... • 19. Empaty Lacking Essay Jomel Sodusta Professor Wilkinson English 111 16 November 2013 Apathy–Mantra–Death; Apathy–Empathy–Healing William D. Tammeus, a journalist, once wrote that "You don't really understand human nature unless you know why a child on a merry–go–round will wave at his parents every time around – and why his parents will always wave back." This quote beautifully paints a picture of the natural love present between a parent and child. However, sometimes this love becomes obscured and a disconnection occurs that prevents the parent from empathy. The stories "Two Kinds, and "The Rocking Horse Winner" show that a parent's lack of empathy impacts the child's search for the self in the following phases: first, the search for the self is stunted ... However as the time passes by, the mother's tests driven by a lack of empathy begins to suffocate and stunt the search for the self within Jing–mei. She recalls, "And after seeing, once again, my mother's disappointed face, something inside me began to die" (Tan 406). As her search for the self is suffocated to its threshold, Jing–mei stands in front of the mirror. Here her search for the self is completely buried and replaced with mantras, "filled with lots of wont's. I won't let her change me... I won't be what I'm not" (Tan 406). In the second stage, the mantra intensifies and this can be observed in Paul as his mother continues to deprive him of her empathy. While Paul's search for the self is deeply buried, his initial mantra does get him the luck he is searching for. He wins five thousand pounds to secretly give to his mother. This is an important and emotional gift to her because "He was very anxious to see the effect of the birthday letter..." (Lawrence 359). This is an open window for Paul's healing and recovery of the self if she could muster some emotion and empathy for his efforts. Instead, she leaves him still deprived. "When Paul watched her face as she read the letters... her face hardened and became more expressionless" (Lawrence 359). • 21. Selma Book Vs Book Essay The conflicts met between the Civil Rights Movement protesters and the white people of the South were incredibly gruesome. While peace and equality for African Americans was the driving force of the protests, violence and inhuman resistance was the force for the white people. In the March Trilogy Books, written by John Lewis and Andrew Aydin, and in the movie Selma, written by Paul Webb and directed by Ava DuVernay, we are given a glimpse of these troubling times during the 1960's. The tone was very dark, harsh, and violent. Because voting rights and equality were important to them, the mass of marchers continued their protests despite the beatings and cruelty they faced. Even though the marchers faced violent opposition and met with conflict, they continued their protests. The books and the movie displayed conflict throughout. One example is during the first attempt to cross the bridge, when the marchers were met by the Alabama State Troopers. It went very dark, very quick, as the troopers barged towards them, making this day known as "Bloody Sunday", March 7, 1965. When asked for his comments in the movie by the press after the brutal attack on the marchers, King says "While rageful violence continues towards the unarmed people of Selma, while they are assaulted with tear gas and batons like enemy in a war, no citizen of this country can call themselves blameless, for we all bear a responsibility for our fellow man. I am appealing to men and women of God and goodwill everywhere, white, black and otherwise. If you believe all are created equal, come to Selma. Join us. Join our march against injustice and inhumanity. We need you to stand with us". The second attempt to cross the bridge on March 9, 1965 brought clergy, men, and women from all over to join. But faced conflict as well, this time between Martin Luther King Jr, and the marchers themselves. However, there was a major difference regarding this attempt to cross, between the books and the movie. In the books, the marchers were met on the bridge by a Federal Official who ... Lewis and Hosea Williams led the marchers. As they were walking across the bridge, Williams asked Lewis, "Can you swim?" • 27. Analysis Of All The Missing Girls Is it monsters from the dark, mysterious woods, jealous ex–boyfriends, or ditching town? These are all theories as to why two teenage girls from the, supposedly, postcard–worthy town have disappeared in the past ten years. In All the Missing Girls, Nic is back in her hometown, for a sojourn for the first time since her friend, Corrine, disappeared ten years ago, and now Annaleise Carter is missing. The memories of Corrine's case begin to resurface as alibis, motives, and connections between the cases are questioned. In a small town like Cooley Ridge, rumors are the plague, spreading everywhere not caring whose lives they ruin. (☺ Metaphor) I finished reading The Woman in Cabin 10, and the resolution is that Richard commits suicide after killing his real wife, and his fake wife and Lo both survive. The three most important searches in All the Missing Girls are the search for connections between the two cases of the missing girls, the search for Corinne, and Tyler's search for love. The search for connections between the cases leads to Tyler being questioned as a suspect, and Nic going on a mission to solve the cases. Tyler is suspected because he is dating Annaleise. He claims they broke up the night before she disappears, which heightens suspicions. He also ditches town after Annaleise goes missing. Nic thinks, "Tyler was starting to feel like a ghost, like if I blinked for too long, he might slip away for good" (Miranda 171). He is fleeing the investigation. By ... This is the story of Billy Cheeseburger. I grew up in Southern Alabama as a slave to an extremely rude owner with my mother in the 1840s. We tried escaping hundreds of times, but we always managed a way to get caught. Due to our relentless efforts in trying to escape, we would get whipped extremely hard, but I didn't care as long as I was with my momma I knew that I was safe. Then that terrible day happened our owner informed us there was a slave auction in Montgomery Alabama, 10 miles away from our home in Richmond, Alabama. Like any other greedy white man, our owner came to my momma and told her that she was going to be auctioned for money. Oh how much I cried that day. That night I tried convincing my mother to escape in the morning and go to Fort Washington which was right across Montgomery but my momma just wouldn't budge. She said that "They will find me and try and sell me to another owner far away from you and you know yo momma can't run fast". To make me happy, my momma told me that she was just going to be gone for a few weeks and that she will eventually come back and that the two of us will escape to Fort Washington. The Decision I went with my momma to the auction where there were a lot of white men shouting about how much money they would spend for a certain slave. • 31. 1965 Voting Rights Act I think there were many events that helped the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act to pass some I would not characterize as fortunate. I would point out that Television was now in people's homes, news came more instantaneous than before, the death of a young black man named Jimmie Lee Jackson's, and Bloody Sunday. The first event that leads us to Selma is the encounter with Sheriff Jim Clark who on the town hall steps stops blacks from entering the building thus not allowing them to register to vote. This event leads the Sheriff to club a black man on the steps of city hall making him fall down and what appears to be him now unconscious on the ground. This was all filmed by a news organization. • 35. Analytical Essay On The Movie Selma The United States of America, a country viewed by many as glorious and opportunistic, endured moments in history that shall never be forgotten. Since the beginning of the Civil War in the 1800s, the act to end slavery was gruesome and horrifying. A war was fought between the free and slave states to eradicate slavery in the country for ever. In the year 1865, slavery was abolished, nonetheless, the evil in many Confederate cities and states was still alive. Selma is a breath–taking movie about Martin Luther King Jr. and his fight against this evil. With death threats sent to his home, and his own followers beaten by troopers, Dr. King never backed down. Having the right to vote is exceedingly vital in having a voice in the government, and the kinds of laws and bills that should be passed. In the beginning of this movie, an African American woman prepares her documents to be allowed to vote. When she hands the documents to the white worker, he begins questioning the woman. His main incentive is simply not give her the right to vote. The movie states that fifty percent of Selma is African American, however, merely two percent are allowed to vote. It is the power held by white officials that denied their vote. Many people took to the streets to peacefully protests this injustice and inequality that loomed in the system. As stated both in the movie and the New York Review article, people have suffered and died for the right to vote. For instance, a young man named Jimmie ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Martin Luther king played a central role in mobilising African American Communities for national activism through his leadership in religious communities and activism such as the National Council of Churches and the Montgomery Improvement Association; however, his leadership in the movement was largely shaped by local grassroot movements, which played far greater roles in national protest and activism as demonstrated by Nashville sit–ins and boycotts. Similarly to the events in Montgomery, the Nashville Sit– ins were led primarily by students and local activists. The grassroots leaders and students who founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee acted upon their own initiative, and although the movement often called upon King's leadership and oratory skills, the movement was primarily guided by self–reliant grassroots leaders. Throughout the books, he is faced with challenges that test his ability to stay true to his beliefs. When Lewis was a child, he received his first Bible from his uncle which was what sparked his heavy faith in God. During his spiritual journey, he began to listen to the teachings of MLK Jr. who impacted his life greatly. "But if you want to go, we'll help... we'll raise the money to file those suites, and we'll support you all the way. But you must keep in mind... your parents could lose their jobs. Your family home could be bombed or burned." (Lewis and Aydin 1:71). He and MLK Jr. worked on many projects together as it was in both of their interests. Lewis became very involved with non–violent protesting and everything MLK Jr. introduced him to. Everything the two of them did was always associated with the teachings of Christ. "His words liberated me. I thought this is it... this is the way out." (Lewis and Aydin 1:78). MLK Jr. was in charge of a group called SNCC. In that group, he dealt with the religious aspects of the racism in the country. John Lawson was asked to become head of the executive coordinating committee which meant he would be even more involved in the group. "I saw myself as a doer. There are hundreds, if not thousands of religions in the world. Many countries have the same religion but there can be a major difference between them. Religion is not the only difference between countries, including food, laws, healthcare, cultural beliefs, weather, and the list goes on and on. There is no difference when it comes to comparing the community in my home town, Akureyri, and Faulkner's community. When I came to Faulkner I got a shock, and I know now why Iceland is considered one of the safest countries in the world. In Iceland the main religion is Christianity. The population of three hundred thirty thousand, divides up in to, 80% Christianity and 20% that have other religion, or are atheist. According to a survey from 2010, the average Icelander goes to church four times every year. Counting every time they go to a funeral, wedding, confirmation and baptism. At Faulkner University I would say that at least one–third of students here go to church every Sunday. Icelandic education system is put up so that every child learns about Christianity. Addition to that they have to learn the foundation of main religions in the world; Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism. In Iceland an ethics class is mandatory, we learn that there is nothing that says that we are any better than the rest of the world. By enslaving Africans and other ethnicities, wealthy white forced them to long hard toils under the sun. Fast forward to the middle 19th century and those enslaved have been set free yet those people are still being oppressed. Fast forward now to the middle 20th century where one hundred ... The media do not realize the problems created by the haphazard ways of this kind of reporting. In the 1950's, media could be said as being the polar opposite of today. The 1950's were a time in which televised news sources were not as frequent and plentiful as they are now. One particular situation that needs to be pointed out happened right in the city of Montgomery, known as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, shows just how effective media can be when the priority is to give the news without hyperbole or exaggeration. Going to Randall Kennedy's Yale Law article, the writer describes the climate of the south at this time period "Segregation was a way of life determined in large part by whites who virtually monopolized state power and used that power to subjugate blacks. (Kennedy)" This is what minorities went through in the beautiful state of Alabama. The media effectively allowed the visual representation of what was happening in Montgomery at the time. Of course, there were some bias because of the majority white journalists at the time, but it was difficult to state anything other than the truth with video evidence and picture evidence proving the reality. The year was 1963, as the chaos of segregation was unfolding in the Southern states, Governor Wallace and Dr. King were prepared to give their speech on Civil Rights. • 63. The Impact Of Internet On Public Opinion On Society Today, the Internet is where society can find any type information, including the news worldwide. Companies, advertisers and online systems have personalized Internet experiences to draw in users. In other words, users are forced to read certain topics based on their search history and are recommended more of the same topics. This causes a large impact on public opinion in society, but the ability to find diverse content is more of an issue. The challenges to overcome diversity include, the user 's motivation, awareness and ability to seek for diverse content (Hoffman et al. 1). With the obstacles of filtering and web programming, are users receiving all the different viewpoints? Media content with filtering, personalization and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Based on the user's search history, filtering is applied in the system. Programming would find a way to determine the search, in some way, similar to previous searches. Hoffman discusses more that, "The awareness challenge lies in users ' inability or difficulty in experiencing diversity due to a lack of knowledge about the production, filtering, and consumption mechanisms at play" (3). This forces users to view only what they are given. It will have viewers looking at stuff based on their previous searches. With this in mind, users awareness of different content is becoming nearly impossible if filtering is applied. The media is becoming more specific from large companies such as Google or Facebook, that can draw us to different sides with filtering technology for profit benefits. In Engin Bozdag's 2013 article, he shares that personalization is a major aspect for advertisers, and can be used for online targeting for potential customers (107). There are more online product purchases than ever before, and advertisers design these online personalization systems to persuade customers (Li and Unger 623). Advertisers collect customer data to design recommendations. Bozdag also adds, "Facebook uses various profile elements to display targeted advertising including age, gender, marital status, and education" (98). These companies earn large profit with advertisements because of filtering and personalization. In addition, it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Rosa Parks And The Freedom Movement Essay Segregation is the action or state of setting someone or something apart from other or thing or being set apart. Segregation started in 1867 . Segregation is hard to deal with. At this time African Americans did not have as much freedom as they do now. They had to basically walk around on eggs shells because if they did not it could have got them into big trouble. They did not have any rights they would be taken to prison for a simple thing of standing up for the right that they "were born" with. A person who had a lot to do with the change of that time is Rosa Parks. Rosa Parks was born February 4, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. Her full name Rosa Louise McCauley. Her mother a teacher and her father was a carpenter. At the age of 2 years old she was baptized which led to her growing up a devoted member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Rosa grew up a sick child. She used Christian hymns to comfort her. At a young age she would memorize bible verses and quote them. "God is everything to me" Rosa grew up in the center of segregation in the south things were different for blacks and whites. It needed many changes to return to the important mission of educating students and preparing them for the workforce. Bradley 's efforts have been very successful. Working with a dedicated team, the two–year college system was restored and the ongoing effort to serve students and the people of Alabama has been refocused to its proper goals. In his role as Chancellor, Bradley also served as Chairman of the State Workforce Planning Council. He oversaw all of Alabama 's workforce development efforts. This gives him an understanding of the state 's ability to expand the workforce by encouraging a business climate that creates good jobs. In 2013 Byrne was elected to congress. Street Culture Paper In the following paragraphs, I will describe a Street Culture organizational policy, how and when the policy is applied in practice, develop recommendations for improving the policy, and discuss how I would evaluate the implementation of my recommendations. I decided to collect policy information on Street Culture Project's search protocol at Downtown Browne's Emergency Shelter. The youth search protocol is integral to service delivery and sets the guidelines regarding what personal belongings are allowed in the Shelter (Street Culture Project Inc., n.d.). In applying a youth–centred approach, the protocol is developed with an emphasis on creating awareness for the participants of what items are allowed (SCPI, n.d.). Although a youth may choose ... Two of the ways the policy is applied are when a participant enters the Shelter or during daily room checks. When a participant enters the Shelter, they must empty all pockets, conduct a self pat down, and empty bag(s) of all belongings. During daily room checks, staff members utilize a comprehensive room checklist to search for contraband or anything that may jeopardize the safety of everyone at the Shelter. To improve the policy, I would recommend that Street Culture Project's board members ensure that staff know how to conduct a thorough search of each youth's room at the Shelter and that all staff be provided with a list of what is considered contraband. To evaluate the implementation of the above recommendations, appropriate guidelines of the youth search protocol at the Shelter should be implemented, staff are required to provide the board members' with regular feedback and ideas to improve safety at the Shelter, and regular reviews of the youth search protocol should be performed (McNamara, ... • 75. What Is The Montgomery Bus Boycott's Story? "The story of the Montgomery Bus Boycott is often told as a simple, happy tale of the "little people" triumphing over the seemingly insurmountable forces of evil. The truth is a little less romantic and a little more complex" (Cozzens). In all reality, it was more so a living disaster that ending in tremendous joy to those involved. On December 1st, 1955 all hell broke loose between the blacks and the whites, as for the Montgomery Bus Boycott had officially began. As I got on the bus heading home from my first day as a dentist, assisting Dr. Moon in Shakespeare, AL, an older African American women got on the bus. I took my seat in the first chair that was available near the front. The back of the bus was of course filled with your average African American, and i had no problem with that. • 77. The Collection That I Am A Building Essay The collection that I am going to be building will be focusing on children's books that feature racially diverse main characters and or themes. The focus of this collection proposal is to bring books with diverse characters onto the shelves and make them easily accessible and visible to young children and families. I was provided with an allocated 5,000 dollars Canadian to spend on this special collection. My initial goal was to select books with people of colour as the main characters exclusively. The issue with this plan is there are lots of books about African Canadian children but not very many about Indigenous children. Due to this, I expanded my search criteria to include books featuring diverse characters where there were also people of colour featured as secondary characters. By expanding my search, I was able to feature more racially diverse characters. The first step in my selection process was searching online for lists of books published by organizations, schools and blogs that featured racially diverse main characters. I used Amazon extensively once I had found titles of interest. Amazon provided me with the ISBN numbers to search as specifically as possible and offered similar title suggestions. I cross referenced the titles through the Halifax Public Libraries Discover Catalog to see if they were already owned. My goal was to select new titles so I was not building a collection that already existed somewhere else. I paid particular attention to books ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
