upload, so you can’t do that now. I keep my
pictures online with Picasa so I can access
them anytime, anywhere.

This is my delicious page. As you can see, I have hundreds of bookmarks.
Let’s go to diigo.com
Here is my diigo page. What I like about it is that since I have so many bookmarks, with so many tags, I can sort by Lists as well
In my Lists, I have only those relevant bookmarks, rather than everything with that tag. This makes my daily searching much easier!
Here is the list I’ve made for the conference, and for you. Inside are bookmarks of sites we’re using today, as well as my “best of” – things I thought you would find useful, or that I think I can’t live without.
At the top is Common Craft, the company who made the video we watched on Social Bookmarking
Let’s make an account for you. First, put just “www.diigo.com” in the address bar. Then, click on either “join now” link.
Choose a username and password. If you already are a facebook user, you can use your facebook profile instead (if you want).
When you’re at home, upload your image.
You can search for your friends and see if they are already on diigo. We’ll do that later.
You will have to open a new tab and check your email to activate your account, so let’s do that real quick so we can continue.
Add the diigolet to your browser once you’re at home. Just drag and drop on your bookmarks bar.
Backspace out /dashboard/kiwijohn so that you just have www.diigo.com and hit “enter”
Here is your dashboard. From here you can see what bookmarks your network/friends have added recently. You can also edit your account and profile, and add the diigo toolbar on your own computer.
For now, lets click on “meet people” and then “search people”
Put in my email address and click “search”. Here I am!
Firstly, click on “Friend request” so we can join each others’ networks. Then type the word to prove you’re a real person.
Then, check out my lists.
I want you to join Diigo so you have access to all my NZATE 2009 bookmarks. They are my “Best Of” list, as well as those I thought would be most helpful to you. You can browse through them at your leisure and then bookmark to your account the ones you like best.
Now let’s look at Twitter. There are heaps of educators on Twitter, so using it is not “hopping on the bandwagon”, but expanding your educational network.
Let’s go to twitter.com. Click the “get started” button
Sign up. You have to type the two words to prove you’re a real person and not a computerized spammer. If they are hard to read, you can get two new words, or have the words spoken aloud.
Once you have an account, you will see your page. Yours will be empty to start because you haven’t posted anything yet. Next we’ll go to “Find People”.
Type in my username, “kiwispouse”, then click “search”
I couldn’t use myself here for obvious reasons! But you will see me, so click “follow”. Now you are following me! Go to “Home”
Now, write your first message. (Type message for network to reply.)
My recommendations of NZ teachers to follow.
Here are the names of those in our workshop so you can follow them.
It is a pity that so few are on twitter!
In “Settings” you can write your details. The more information you give, the more people will be interested in following you. If you say nothing, you won’t get many friends.
Fill in your information as above. You can add your twitter account to your blog as well. Next, click on “Picture”
You will have to put in your picture at home.
(End of twitter. Move on to blogs)
Some blog suggestions that are free
My blog
My class blog homepage
One of my students’ blogs
To join Blogger.com, sign in with your google account, (you can also use open entry via listed options) or click on “create a blog”
Create account as indicated. Once you have a google account, you have access to all google products, such as igoogle, google docs, etc.
Here’s a sample
Think carefully about your personal blog name. The type it in as the address and click “check availability”
This one wasn’t available. I clicked another choice as shown, and then clicked “check availability” again
Scroll through and click one that appeals to you. You can always change it later
Success! Click on “Start Blogging”
Let’s type in a title and a few lines, then click on Publish Post. You can always delete it later.
Everything here is fine the way it is. All you need to do is add a description.
Choose as you wish.
I find it easier to look at the blog first, but give it a try.
Here’s a brand new blog page. Firstly, let’s join each other’s blogs by “following”
Save your dashboard to your Diigo bookmarks!
First, go to 21classes.com
Save this site to your Diigo bookmarks
Click here to write the welcome on the homepage
I created each student account with the student’s first name and our class. I used their last names as their passwords.
Create student accounts all at once. Easier than inviting individual students.
Click on “View Portal” and you come to your homepage! Allow students time to make up their own pages – you’ll be pleased at how quick they can do it.
