• It is a process to attain maturity in social
relationship
• A learning process to confirm to a group’s
standard, morals and traditions.
• A process where new types of behaviour is
learnt.
• change in interests occurs and new friendships
are developed
• An adjustment to a new environment

• There are some standards regarding what is
approved and not, based on social norms
• Children must know what are those approved
behaviours
• Children must model their behaviour along
the approved line

• Learned social roles must be played according
to situations that in culturally and the socially
approved way.

• Franks: “Home & family is the only institution
for child’s socialization and transmission of
cultural heritage which shapes the basic
structure of child’s personality
• Home is a seat of learning for social skills
• If children enjoy social relationships with family
members , they enjoy social relationship
outside also.

• Relationship with parents, siblings and grand
parents affect children’s attitude towards
outsiders
• there must be great cooperation between
parents and their children
• If the overall home environment is favourable
of good social attitudes children will become

attention and the child expect the same from
others.

• It involves
– Planning
– formulating
– implementing
a programme of bringing up children in a certain
way that is in line with the requirement of the
family and society.

Democratic homes make best social adjustments
– Children from democratic families are socially
outgoing and active
Rejected children may turn within themselves and
become introverts, inactive and withdrawn
Authoritarian parents suppress children’s curiosity
and creativity.
– Accepted and loved children will become
extroverts.
– Parental motivation helps children to develop
socially acceptable behaviour.
