Why Did The Spanish Turn To African Slaves Rather Than...
1) How does the rediscovery of the slave burial ground in New York parallel the way American history has generally treated the story of Africans
arrival and survival in this land?
The historical narrative of slavery being isolated to the south is at the very least contradicted by the discovery of a slave cemetery in the north. The
slave cemetery parallels the historical narrative of slavery by its intentional segregation from the white population. It is also worth noting that it took
America over two hundred years to identify and properly care for the remains.
2) Why did the Spanish turn to African slaves rather than other sources of labor? What were enslaved people's lives like in this period?
The Spanish turned to African slaves rather than other sources of labor because as Spain colonized the continent Africans and others saw economic
value in selling human beings. The Spaniards and Portuguese took advantage of the relatively inexpensive human labor force. In my opinion, because
the African slaves were considered property, and less than human, they are deplorable treatment followed. Slaves suffered contagious European illness,
forced labor, and many other kinds of abuse.
3) What motivated the Spanish conquests in the New World? What were the expeditions led by men like de Soto like, and what roles did Africans play?
The Spanish were motivated to conquer the new world by riches that would ultimately lead to power. Men like de Soto led men that were greedy and

Essay about Colonization In America
England began colonizing America in the 1600s, when religious and political dissenters of the changes imposed by the Stuart monarchy launched one
of the largest migrations in written history В– The Great Migration В– in search of a new life free from persecution and open to numerous employment
opportunities. Each emigrant brought with him/her a blueprint in his mind of recreating the culture he left behind, yet, by 1700, the regions of New
England and the Chesapeake region had evolved into two distinct societies. Whether their motive for emigration was to attain a second chance to
mend failures, to seek an oasis that provided religious freedom, or perhaps to find a place to preserve the vanishing past of England, the settlers basically

Most of the men were single and labeled as "adventurers," rather than the "planters" of New England. The single females, in their teens, were in
search of husbands (Hawke, 1). In a consensus conducted in 1624, only 244 females were reported, among a population of 1, 292 (Hawke, 20). The
differences in the population of the two societies greatly contributed to the development of each region. With a conservative mind, the New England
settlers sought to live a peaceful life, familiar to their former lives back in England. Their hope was to preserve their old traditional lifestyles, rather
than to innovate. Settlers of the Chesapeake region, however, being young and ambitious sought to accomplish something different. Because only first
born sons in England were capable of inheriting land, younger sons were eager to immigrate to Virginia, where they could own land (Luke, 28). With
this piece of land, they intended to make great profits. Therefore, differences in ages of the groups of settlers contributed to the differences found
between the two early settlements. Distinguishable factors evident between New England and Chesapeake regions include: attitudes toward social and
religious aspects, what they made out of their land, their diets and their treatment toward others. Age distinctions led to other differences to exist in the
ambitions of the settlers, which evidently, led to diverse societies to prevail. Being religiously exploited

The Civil War Of The United States Essay
In the early years of the republic, when the Northern states were providing for immediate or gradual emancipation of the slaves, many leaders had
supposed that slavery would die out. In 1787 the Northwest Ordinance had banned slavery in the Northwest Territory. In 1808 many southerners
thought that slavery would end soon. The expectations turned out to be false. The South became united behind the institution of slavery as new
economic factors made slavery more profitable than it had been before 1790. Slavery was a huge issue. In fact, slavery was so serious it was one of
the primary reasons for the civil war. Slavery had some high times and some low times in the 1800 's, but no matter how it was going some people
were always for it and some people were always against it.
Chief among these was the rise of a great cotton–growing industry in the South, stimulated by the introduction of new types of cotton and by Eli
Whitney's invention in 1793 of the cotton gin, which separated the seeds from cotton. The cotton gin made it easier and faster to extract the seeds
within the cotton, in turn making it easier to sell the cotton quickly. Slaves could now clean 1,000 pounds of cotton a day. The faster cotton could be
produced the faster it would need to be collected, so this required more slave hands.
The Industrial revolution increased the demand for raw cotton and opening of new lands in the West greatly extended the area available for cotton
cultivation. Sugar

Perceval And Aethon: A Fictional Narrative
She waited to see if the cold had woken her son, but he did little more than shift in his bassinet and breathe a few sleepy snorts. That brought a smile to
her face in the dim chamber. Joan loved her son beyond measure. In the abstract, becoming a mother was something that sounded fulfilling and she had
wanted it, but she had not expected the overwhelming surge of love that engulfed her the first time she held her son in her arms. And that love had not
faded one whit during the four months since she'd given birth to him.
Joan closed her eyes and appreciated the final few moments of peace before she had to rise for the day. She rolled onto her back, and her right elbow
crinkled a piece of parchment. In the low light, she had to squint to read ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

"Aethon, behave yourself, will you? I'm going to check your teeth, so please do not stomp, kick, spit, or cause any other disturbance. All right?"
Perceval guided Aethon outside to the fenced area leading to the paddock. For some reason, Aethon was less likely to misbehave when getting his
teeth looked at if he was outside. While Aethon could be temperamental with others, the horse usually submitted to Perceval. But the one thing the
destrier despised was anyone getting close to his teeth. Thus, it was Perceval's job to check his horse's teeth, because if he did not, one of the stable
hands would end up kicked, stomped, or worse. Last time, Aethon had kicked down an entire stall wall, and Perceval did not want a repeat of that.
Perceval stepped closer, and Aethon let out what sounded like a growl. The animal snorted, and his breath came out in cloudy puffs in the early
morning cold.
With a flourish, Perceval held out an apple. "Look, your favorite. Have a little bite and I'll take a look."
After a haughty toss of his head, Aethon bent down and nibble the apple. Perceval lifted Aethon's lips and studied the horse's teeth. "Looks good, beast.

Nat Turner Rebellion Essay
Despite North America's large slave population, there were few powerful slave revolts before 1831. Slaves were complacent and passive so most
southern slave owners probably felt like they had enough control over their slaves. This way of thinking was completely changed by Nat Turner's
rebellion. This violent slave revolt showed people what slaves were really capable of. White southerners saw how slaves were smart enough to
organize and plan a resistance and because they were getting tired of being oppressed. Even though Nat Turner's rebellion was considered unsuccessful
being that it was shut down in a matter of days, it was successful in that it had a long lasting effect on slavery. This level of success can be attributed to
the fact that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Thomas R. Gray asks Nat Turner what led him to revolt he says:
Having soon discovered to be great, I must appear so, and therefore studiously avoided mixing in society, and wrapped myself in mystery, devoting my
time to fasting and prayer–By this time, having arrived to man's estate, and hearing the scriptures commented on at meetings, I was struck with that
particular passage which says: "Seek ye the kingdom of Heaven and all things shall be added unto you." I reflected much on this passage, and prayed
daily for light on this subject–As I was praying one day at my plough, the spirit spoke to me, saying, "Seek ye the kingdom of Heaven and all things
shall be added unto you. (Gray 9)
After two years of continuous prayer, Turner had this same revelation again, confirming that he was "ordained for some great purpose in the hands
of the Almighty" (Gray 9). He soon ran away from his plantation but returned a month later. He told his fellow slaves that he came back because
"the Spirit appeared to me and said I had my wishes directed to the things of this world, and not to the kingdom of heaven, and that I should return to
the service of my earthly master" (Klein). In 1825 Turner had his first vision. He claims to have seen a battle between black and white spirits with a
darkened sun while thunder rolled and blood flowed into the waters. He says he heard a voice saying,

Hate Crimes: The Case Of Mr. Byrd Jr.
Within the next five years, two cases would gain media attention and spark activist movements across the nation that would lead to expansion of the
existing hate crime laws. My recollection of these two cases is pretty vivid, although I was pretty young at the time; I was inquisitive in nature and
tended to watch the evening news with my parents:
June 7, 1998, 49 year old James Byrd Jr. was murdered in the most notorious and gruesome, stomach turning, hate crimes in recorded history. Late one
summer night, as he was walking home from a friend's house after a party, John William King, along with Lawrence Russell Brewer and Shawn
Allen Berry pulled up in a pickup truck offered Mr. Byrd a ride home. He jumped into the bed of their truck and was driven to an isolated wooded
area, severely beaten, urinated on, and chained to the back of a truck by his ankles and dragged for over three miles on a bumpy road before the men,
later identified as white supremacists, threw what was left of his body– a shredded torso– into a cemetery. Byrd's severed head, neck and right arm
were found nearly a mile away from the cemetery. Police reports indicate that that there was a trail of blood, body parts and personal effects that
stretched for more than two miles and that Brewer spray–painted Mr. Byrd's face with black paint before he was killed.
October 7, 1998, 21–year–old Matthew Wayne Shepard was murdered in what is likely the most infamous anti–gay hate crimes in American History.

the life of a field slave VS the house Slave
The Life of a Field Slave VS the House Slave
Slavery was a ruthless and dreadful way of life for all slaves. Yet there were differences in rank between slaves. Minor class slaves were "field
slaves". Superior class slaves were "house slaves". The daily routines of these slaves differed to a great extent. Field slaves only function was
production. Their duties were to plant and cultivate the crops, clear the land, flame the undergrowth, roll the wood, split rails, transport water, restore
fences, spread fertilizer, and break the soil. Working since sunrise to sunset was purely and analogy for slave labor, they regularly worked before
sunrise and considerably past dusk. A house slave every day routine incorporated... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Any time one group thought that another group was getting something that they weren't getting tensions often rise. The field slaves were mindful of
the better treatment such as the cultural and travel opportunities, and educational opportunities that house slaves received. This normally caused
tension with field slaves and house slaves because field slaves felt it was biased.
According to some African literature books the classification of these two classes were created base on physical appearance and skin color. The
more the skin completion of the slave favor the master the likely it would be for this slave to be a house slave, and the darker skin complexion of the
slave would classify them to be a field slave. History show that slavery on those ranks was in both genders it wasn't a sense of discrimination against
the slave. After all slaves were treated equally, it was a way that the institution was design to control the slave.
Overall slavery was about the same for both of those classes when viewing it in labor and suffering ways. Both the field slave and the house slave
were treated on very inhuman ways. Anybody who loses their dignity and freedom will feel like they would have nothing to live

The museum was a complex rather than one building. The complex was surrounded by a black metal fence. The main building itself maintained its
original style. In the late 1920s, the area was build as the Southern Pacific Depot freight line. It ran from Brownsville to Edinburg until 1952. Then, the
loading/unloading building began restoration to become a museum. Finally, the Historic Brownsville Museum opened its doors in 1986. The complex

in different categories. The first room was the information desk and gift shop. The two museum guides were unable to present a tour, but they happily

The Major Battles of the Civil War Essay
The Major Battles of the Civil War
No other war seems to hold our focus like the Civil War. Scholars have chosen to make it their life's work, authors have written reams about it, and we
all feel some kind of connection to the Civil War. This paper was created to highlight some of the major battles that took place during that conflict.
Major battles usually marked a drastic change in the momentum from one side to the other or led to massive losses of troops. These battles and their
results all played a huge part in the outcome of the war.
One of the war's first battles was the Battle of First Bull Run. Today's site of the Battle of First Bull Run is a tranquil pasture surrounded by trees and

General Pierre Beauregard, commander of Confederate troops at the Battle of First Bull Run and second–in–command during the Battle of Shiloh,
commented that the enemy was given "...the most surprising surprise" but the delays allowed Union reinforcements to take their place on the
battlefield beside their comrades and drive the rebels back after two days of fighting. No ground was gained, no strategic town was taken, no supply
depot was sacked, but the Union victory did force the evacuation of Confederate troops from much of Tennessee and split the rebel forces along the
lines formed by the Mississippi River.
Albert Sidney Johnson was a Troop Commander in this battle. Johnston was born in Kentucky and obtained his education at West Point. He
graduated in 1826. Johnston's first taste of active service came in 1832 during the Black Hawk Indian War. He resigned his commission afterwards
only to return to active duty in 1836. He fought against the United States Indians on the River Neches and served in the Mexican War with Major
General Zachary Taylor. Taylor made Johnston a paymaster during Taylor's presidency. He continued his rise in the ranks by becoming a colonel in the
2nd Calvary, a brevet brigadier general commanding the Utah military district and in 1861 the commander of the Pacific Coast.

Pros And Cons Of Slaughterhouse Farms
As you open your mouth to take a bite out of a juicy hamburger topped with bacon, do you ever wonder what you're actually eating? I used to not
care about what happened to the animals that provided my food, just as long as I had food. It is very rare that we really know what happens to the
animals as they are becoming our food. The cow and pig you are about to eat had suffered a great amount of inhumanity before being slaughtered.
Animals that are living on slaughterhouse farms have been abused and mistreated in many ways. It is highly unnecessary for us to mistreat animals
when they're providing food for us.
Animals that are grown up on slaughterhouse farms start their lives off living through animal cruelty. Vegan Outreach says, "At one... Show more

By not consuming animal products people are slowly solving the problem with animal welfare. About 56 billion animals die every year due to the daily
intake humans consume (Google). This is obviously a problem, and I can't understand why people would want to disagree.
The treatment of animals on slaughterhouse farms get treated like they have no use, when they are of great use to humans. Animals should not get
treated like they are useless. The workers that treat animals poorly need to be fired. They are being inhumane and unreasonable. Those animals that
are suffering are doing it to provide a meal on millions of people's tables. The way we kill animals makes no sense. Think about being in those
animals positions. What would you want to change if people were skinning you alive, or pounding your head to the ground so you'll die?
The conditions in slaughterhouses are wrong, and need to change. From a Ted Talks video a man, Mark Bittman, stars in it and states "... We don't
need animal products...We're not born craving Whoppers or Skittles..." (Ted Talks). Therefor, we are not born craving meat. There are many other
ways we can get the everyday protein we need without consuming animal products. One way we can get protein is from nuts, beans, or even

The Art Of Racing In The Rain Rhetorical Analysis
The Art of Racing in the Tears
The Art of Racing in the Rain is a novel written in the point of view of an intelligent dog named Enzo. The unique point of view of this novel is what
makes it so entertaining and easy to read. Specific scenes that show how Enzo transcends scenes include the zebra scene. Another is when Enzo kills
the squirrel. The last is Enzo's dying scene. In the Art of Racing in the Rain, Garth Stein manipulates his style by writing through the unusual point of
view of a dog named Enzo, which transcends an ordinary scene into an extraordinary scene, by using specific syntax, diction, and the unique point of
view of Enzo.
As Enzo was left to starve and hallucinate he encountered the evil zebra.
"The now living–zebra said nothing to me at all, but when it saw me it began to dance, a twisting, jerky ballet which, culminated with the zebra
repeatedly thrusting its gelded groin into the face of an innocent Barbie doll. That made me quite angry, and I growled at the molester zebra, but it
simply smiled and continue its assault, this time picking on a stuffed frog, which it mounted from behind and rode bareback it's hoof in the air like a
bronco rider, yelling out
"Yee–haw! Yee–haw!""(53).
In this passage Enzo witnesses a horrific sight, but if told by through a different point of view, the scene would seem very different. In reality Enzo
was seeing illusions but what was really happening was Enzo tearing up a little girl's stuffed animal. Because this scene was told through the point of
view of Enzo the scene really enticed the reader and pulled in their attention. Stein used word choice such as "molester zebra" and "gelded groin" to
simulate a nightmarish scene. Stein also writes his sentences in a way that makes the audience read in a rapid yet fearful way by using syntax.
Examples of this are the excessive use of commas and short/easy pronounceable words. "The now living–zebra said nothing to me at all....into the face
of an innocent Barbie doll". Because of Enzo's genuine fear and anxiety, this scene is transformed into an exciting, fearful scene because it is told
through the point of view of Enzo.
Another scene where the perspective Enzo provides changes a scene is when he kills the

Who Killed John Fitzgerald Kennedy?
Who killed John Fitzgerald Kennedy? This question can be considered as cryptic as the meaning of life. Does anyone know who killed Kennedy?
The J.F.K Assassination is a conspiracy wrapped in a conspiracy, wrapped in an enigma? Can the people of the world serious accept what the U.S
government has told them – Lee Harvey Oswald single handily killed the President of the U.S.A? Evidence shows that it seems possible that the
American Central Intelligence Agency could have been involved in the president 's death? All the facts suggest that this assassination was not the
work of one, Lee Harvey Oswald, but a higher power, one which had the clearance to change motorcade routes, fake photo 's and successfully

John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, on May 29, 1917. Graduating from Harvard in 1940, he entered the Navy. In 1943,
when a Japanese destroyer sank his PT boat, Kennedy, despite injuries, led the survivors to safety. On his return from the war,John F. Kennedy became

Junior Research Paper: the Changing Face of Democracy
The Changing Face of "Democracy"
The nation we knew as the United States is no more. The fair, war–weary republic that we've all known and loved has been replaced by a tired war
hungry, that has been so split that it is hardly worthy of being called the "United" States. But what happened, one might ask. When looking into the
past, the major turning point occurred in the year 2000. In that year, the dynastic candidate George W. Bush was elected president, and since has
reigned with an iron will to turn the United States into the nation that it is today. Going back to the year 2000, the inside facts are plenty. The primary
elections chose two candidates: the republican George Bush and the Democrat Al George. From the start, this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

But don't let the kind praise fool you, the nation isn't so great as in past decades. As Bush's policies continued the problems have become even more
present. One matter in particular has taken care of our old and sick, but Bush is fixing the nation for the future, for "Social Security has been the
crown jewel of the nation's social insurance commitment to American families through the administrations of 10 presidents. Yet only a few years
after a Republican leader declared Social Security a politically untouchable "third rail of American politics," the nation twice elected a president who
promised to end the system as it has operated successfully for 70 years" (Freidman 1). With Bush in the lead, the changes to the American way of life
just keep piling up. Continuing onto his second term, Bush's luck just kept on improving; at the retirement of Sandra O'Conner and the death of the
William Rehnquist, Bush has been successful in gaining more power over the Supreme Court and has since challenged many laws. "Among the laws
Bush said he can ignore are military rules and regulations, affirmative–action provisions, requirements that Congress be told about immigration services
problems, В‘whistle–blower' protections for nuclear regulatory officials, and safeguards against political interference in federally funded research"

Discussion On The Death Of Animal
DISCUSSION
In Illinois, if an animal injures or attacks a person who does not provoke, is acting peaceably, and are injured in a place where that person is lawfully
allowed to be, then the owner of that animal can be liable for the injuries that the person sustains. The Illinois statute states, "If a dog or other animal,
without provocation, attacks or injures any person who is peaceably conducting himself in any place where he may lawfully be, the owner of such dog
or other animal is liable in damages to such person for the full amount of the injury sustained." 510 Ill. Comp. Stat. Ann. 5/16 (West 2003). There are

In the next ten years of visit to Alaska, Muir would track glaciers and observe them.
John Muir will spend the rest of his life writing books about nature and speak out for nature. He will suffer the lost of his wife and abate his grief by
observing a pertrified forest. John Muir really was a man of the mountains.
I believe that John Muir was a very hard working and determined man.
The fact that he overcomes the struggles of his life to accomplish all that he did makes him an even more remarkable man. I think that it is great that
there is a man that would speak out for such a wonderful thing like nature in a time where people didn't care. He has accomplished so much in his life
that I am surprised that he is not as well–known. He should be written about and taught about more. John Muir can inspire a person to care more for
nature and become more considerate and passionate to it.

Audra Knelt On A Pillow Before The Altar In The Castleв
Ђ™S
Audra knelt on a pillow before the altar in the castle's chapel. A month ago, the tiny room served as an overflow guest chamber, but Audra had it
converted into a place where people might pray and reflect. It was on the first floor, tucked away in a corner, and offered a view of the garden (if one
strained her neck).
As Audra grew older, the gods and goddesses seemed closer, more accessible and less mysterious. She in no way considered herself a pious woman,
but when she prayed, she felt heard. While the gods and goddesses certainly did not solve all her problems, they listened, and that was often all the
support she needed. This was all a part of aging, she assumed, casting off the doubts of youth and connecting to something larger, a ... Show more

And, of course, Vaughan, Faye, and their family were always at Audra's side. Vaughan and Faye were her two oldest friends, and she could never thank
them enough for their unwavering loyalty and love. They had taught her the true meaning of enduring friendship.
Of course, one could never forget Geraint, even though she'd seen him recently. They promised to visit one another every other year, with him visiting
one year and she the next. They'd never be parted for long again.
Audra closed her eyes and smiled, thinking of Dillan and how proud Trana and Eudaf would be of their son. He was the definition of a free thinker,
but she had never known a young man so devoted to his kingdom and duties as a knight and advisor. Dillan was like another son to her, but she
realized she needed to do a better job of showing him that. As always, she let her memories drift to the deceased and whispered words of love to
them–Lowri, Petra, Eudaf, Trana, and Owena (yes, Owena). She saved her mother and Carlton for last.
"Mam, I love you. I can never thank you enough for teaching me the importance of second chances. Thank you for loving me. I did not have you back
in my life for long enough," whispered Audra, "but our time together changed me. Thank you."
When her focus shifted to Carlton, her throat tightened, but that was typical. While Maxen had captured her heart and soul, she still treasured those the
years she spent with Carlton. She and her Carlton had shared a close bond,

Personal Narrative: Americas Funniest Home
I have one memory from my childhood that is very vivid, most likely because I was seen on Americas Funniest Home Videos. It all started when
my brother had an idea, at the time it seemed very fun and harmless. The idea was to make a skate video of him, but like always I wanted to be just
like him so I wanted in on this video as well. Little did I know I was going to end the day in the emergency room, in tears, with an ice pack and
twelve stitches, and later find myself on national television. It was a hot summer day, sometime around noon in my driveway. My brother Will was
fourteen years old, he had his friend Jared over at our house who was thirteen years old, he was also our next door neighbor and the camera man. Then

Fire Symbolism In A Rose For Emily
Symbolism in Faulkner: "A Rose for Emily" and "Barn Burning" In the Faulkner book "A Rose for Emily", Faulkner has a few parts of the story
that show symbolism. One piece of symbolism that I saw was that of Emily's house. Emily was the only remaining person of a perishing world of
southern aristocracy. The outside of the particularly large framed house is richly decorated. The cupolas, spires, and scrolled balconies are the
hallmarks of a decadent style of architecture that became popular in the 1870s. Around the time that the story takes place, a variety of things had
changed. The street and neighborhood that was once prosperous, pristine, and indulged, had lost their standing as the realm of the elite. The house,

Snopes's destruction is a swipe at the financial security that de Spain has and that Snopes lacks, as well as a clear statement of his unhappiness at
being subservient to de Spain for his livelihood. Without even knowing the de Spains, Snopes resents them simply for being prosperous landowners
and in a superior position. A barn holds a farmer's livelihood, including crops, livestock, and machinery, and this is Snopes's usual target. Extending his
criminal reach to the rug signals that Snopes's resentment now encompasses the domestic sphere as well. The shocking act of smearing the rug with
excrement eventually leads to the rug's complete destruction, which then leads to another court hearing, another act of revenge, and ultimately Snopes's

objectives] By the end of this section, you will be able to: Describe the reasons why many Americans doubted that Abraham Lincoln would be
reelected Explain how the Union forces overpowered the Confederacy By the outset of 1864, after three years of war, the Union had mobilized its
resources for the ongoing struggle on a massive scale. The government had overseen the construction of new railroad lines and for the first time used
standardized rail tracks that allowed the North to move men and materials with greater ease. The North's economy had shifted to a wartime model. The
Confederacy also mobilized, perhaps to a greater degree than the Union, its efforts to secure independence and maintain slavery. Yet the Confederacy
experienced ever–greater hardships after years of war. Without the population of the North, it faced a shortage of manpower. The lack of industry,
compared to the North, undercut the ability to sustain and wage war. Rampant inflation as well as food shortages in the South lowered morale.
[H2]THE RELATIONSHIP WITH EUROPE From the beginning of the war, the Confederacy placed great hope in being recognized and supported by
Great Britain and France. European intervention in the conflict remained a strong possibility, but when it did occur, it was not in a way anticipated by
either the Confederacy or the Union. Napoleon III of

The Great Joe Rantz: The Boys In The Boat
The Great Joe Rantz I had the pleasure of reading an outstanding, best seller book called, The Boys In The Boat Nine Americans and Their Epic
Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by Daniel James Brown. This book is about the life of Joe Rantz, and the "boat." Joe was born in
Spokane. At the age of three his mother passed away. With the start of theGreat Depression people had lost their jobs, homes, and had nowhere to go.
He went though some hard obstacles including being left behind at the age of fifteen. Joe said "The whole thing was over in five minutes"

Essay On Sonny Brooks
In our town there was an old man who would come out of his house and take his walk along the sides of the streets in the town. There were not
many sidewalks, so he shared the street with the cars, but in the backstreets the cars went by slowly. He was a tall, thin old guy that walked kind of
hunched over. He was the father of the doctor in our town. He held his cane in one hand and a bag in the other, and he walked quickly, but with such
small steps that he did not get very far very fast.
The warm weather has returned, but he does not show up on the streets. In the cold weather there are no old men on the streets. Now that the warm

Ohio Adverse Possession Laws Case Summary
On January 1, 2008, four lawsuits involving Brad Pitt were filed in Ohio. The first was brought by Matt Damon against Brad Pitt to acquire quiet title
to one–acre of Brad's land that Matt had cleared and built a barn on. Looking into quiet titles and adverse possession laws will determine if Matt
can get title to the land or not. The second case involves Snazzy Jeff, a paparazzo, seeing Maddox, Brad's son, dropped his PokГ©mon camera.
Snazzy Jeff then came up and took the item hoping to find pictures to sell on it without informing Brad or Maddox. This may be a case of lost property
or theft that needs to be evaluated. The third case involves Brad suing Jackie Philabaum at the request of his wife. At the parade, Brad took off his coat

To acquire a quiet title to the land Matt Damon only needs 21 of those years. According to Ohio law, the person wanting to obtain title fromadverse
possession must have possessed the property for 21 years without the permission of the owner, but in clear knowledge of the owner ("Ohio
Adverse Possession Laws"). There are four requirements listed to obtain a quiet title starting with using the land without permission of the owner.
Then they must treat the land as their own, use the land in an obvious way and for a continuous period of time without sharing with others ("Ohio
Adverse Possession Laws"). Matt Daman easily completes all four of these requirements. He never asked Brad for permission to clear the land
and build a barn on Brad's land, but did. Brad repeatedly visited and inspected the property in 1986, 1996, and 2002, seeing the barn but never
saying anything to Matt. Matt appears to have also used the land for a continuous period totaling 21 years before requesting title to the one acre of
land. Brad may have a defense if he had talked to Matt at any time about the property and can prove it, but it will be a hard case to win for him.
Matt will win this case for a quiet title to the one acre of land with his barn on it because of the time that had passed with no objection or other claims
of possession by Brad. Later, with four children to

Causes Of The Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was a symbol of the conflict that still existed post–WWII between the free world and communist Russia. Hard feelings abounded
toward Germany for the atrocities it had committed and for turning against Russia, which had once been its ally. Russia used the building of the Wall
as a means to punish and humiliate Germany. Proverbs 21:1 tells us, "The king's heart is in the Lord's hand...He turneth it whithersoever He will."
Twenty years later a powerful leader arose in the free world–President Reagan–and God used him to change the political climate. The tearing down of
the Berlin Wall ended the conflict and became a significant historical event if the power of compromise.
A few events that led to the building of the Berlin Wall was during WWII. During WWII, the Nazi's were originally allied with Russia against France,
Great Britain, and the United States. Russia was uncomfortable with treaties and alliances with any country after Hitler's invasion. Even though both
Germany and Russia were on the same side they both had very different ideologies. This led to many conflicts between the two countries throughout
the war. After the war, at the conference of Yalta in February 1945, the division of Germany had been decided. Stalin, Churchill, and Roosevelt
decided to split the country of Germany into four zones for the Soviets, Americans, British, and French. The Soviets got Berlin, Germany's capital
which would also be split into four more zones. America, France,

Abraham Lincoln 'The Rail Splitter'
Abraham Lincoln was first called "The Rail Splitter" while running for president in 1860. The image was intended to portray him as a
hardworking, frontiersman who wielded an ax to split logs to make rail fences. Lincoln folklore says that Lincoln's use of an ax began early in life.
When the Lincoln family moved from Kentucky to Indiana in the autumn of 1816, they first lived in a rough temporary shelter. The following
spring a more permanent house had to be built. He was only eight, though he was too young for strenuous manual labor, he was big for his age, and
willing to work. By the 1860 election Lincoln wasn't doing manual labor anymore. He was a prominent lawyer, not a backwoodsman. Still, Lincoln
was comfortable with the story of him learning to use an ax as a boy when his campaign biography was being written. He perhaps, recognized that his
history of working with an ax could have political advantages.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Richard Oglesby was quite familiar with Lincoln's stories of his early life and planned to capitalize on Lincoln's humble background for political

to their new homestead along the Sangamon River. He asked John Hanks to find the location, where the two had felled trees and made fence rails.
Hanks said he could, and the next day the two men set off to authentic Lincoln–chopped fence rails. John Hanks inspected a fence, and declared they
were the very rails he and Lincoln had cut. Hanks claimed he knew them by the wood, black walnut and honey locust. Oglesby was satisfied he had

Traveling, trade, economy, technologies were completely changed after its creation. The world became smaller, and people started to think differently
about the world. Two main stories are important for the invention of the aircraft. First, the Wright brothers are known as the creators of the airplane.
They are believed to be the inventors of the machine for the most part of the world. The brothers created a prototype that was able fly with the help of
a catapult, in other words, the machine could just float. It could not put itself in the by using self–propulsion. The second story is that the creation of
the airplane is given to Santos Dumont, a Brazilian citizen that expanded his aircraft studies in France; A man who studied many different types of
flying equipment, including the airplane. His prototype, the14 BIS, could fly and handle itself on the air with a gas engine developed to do so. The
first airplanes were developed in the beginning of the 20th century right before the World War I in which aircraft was most utilized for observation.
With the evolution of the technology, aircraft started to have more utilization so that during the World War II they were very important weapons
delivery and bombing the battle fields. Reconnaissance was another function for the aircraft during World War II. Thus, the development of the planes
had to be followed by the creation of the airports. In the early days of aviation airports were known as flying

The Body By Steven King Analysis
How does a child receive the necessary parental guidance growing up if their parents and all other adults in their life are abusive, neglectful, and at
best uninvolved? Throughout Steven King's novella "The Body" it becomes evident that children will try to find guidance in almost anything. But,
as King demonstrates in his novella, the most common source of guidance comes from a child's friends. All four boys, Gordie, Teddy, Vern, and
Chris replace the rolls of their parents by comforting, protecting, and counselling each other through tough times. First, the boys replace the
guidance rolls of their parents by comforting each other. This can be scene multiple times throughout the novella and probably produces some of
the most dramatic scenes in the Novella. The boys comfort each other in multiple ways with the most common way of comfort being through
words. At the dump, when Milo and Teddy have the whole name calling incident, Teddy is cut deep emotionally by Milo's rude comments about his
father. This is where King implements the first dose of parental comfort from a friend into the story. Walking along the tracks after leaving the
dump, Teddy breaks down and begins to sob, this is when Chris steps in to comfort Teddy. Chris comforts Teddy by telling him, "'Lissen, Teddy,

Civil War Battles
The Major Battles of the Civil War
No other war seems to hold our focus like the Civil War. Scholars have chosen to make it their life's work, authors have written reams about it, and
we all feel some kind of connection to the Civil War.

As a consequence, he was recalled to Washington on 7 November to hand over his command to Major General Ambrose Burnside.
The Troop Commander for this battle was Ambrose Powell Hill. A. P. Hill was considered by Lee to be one of his best generals. He took care of
his troops, yet wasn't afraid to put them in battle when the time came. As a West Point graduate of 1847, he served in the US Artillery and saw
action in Mexico in the last year of the war there, 1848. He spent some time in the Third Seminole War and on the frontier. When Hill answer the
call of his native Virginia and joined the side of the Confederacy, he did so as a first lieutenant. He was promoted to colonel of the 13th Virginia and
saw his first big action at First Bull Run. Afterward, he was promoted to brigadier general and performed well during the Peninsula Campaign. His
efforts there won him a promotion to major general as head of a division. His division, the Light Division, won a firm reputation as a fast moving
force. Hill himself would lead his troops into battle. The Battle of Gettysburg was "accidentally" the bloodiest battle of the war. Neither Lee nor
Meade wanted to fight at Gettysburg which was the cross roads for 10 different roads. Major forces from both armies collided there and the battle
began. Not only did it claim many American lives but it also changed the course of the war.

You Know How To Ride?-Personal Narrative

"Absolutely," I replied. Though I really wasn't so sure. I had only ridden a horse once at a fair, but I was the type that whenever I felt like something

"Believe me," I said, climbing onto one of the horse's backs, "we got this."
We trotted alongside a split–rail fence that divided the dewy meadows from the desolate road. On the banks, gold, orange, and blood–red poppies
drooped like pasty butterflies in the afternoon sun. Then we cut between the shaggy vines, where a few pickers were plucking bushels of green and

Section 1
Pre and Post Assessment:
After reviewing the assessment data recorded in Project A, I created learning goals to aid my students. Only 38% of the entire class was able to
answer at least two of the three questions that required them to decode unknown words. Therefore, one of my objectives focuses on using known
words to decipher unfamiliar words in a sentence. This goal correlates with the Georgia Standard of Excellence: ELAGSE5RI4 (Georgia Department
of Education, 2015). My pre–assessment consists of an article taken from ReadWorks (2015) onAbraham Lincoln. Section three of the pre–assessment
demands the students to read a group of sentences and determine the most accurate definition of the bolded word. By accomplishing this goal, the
students will be able to read more fluently, and better comprehend what they are reading. The second learning goal is: students will pinpoint the main
idea of the passage. This goal aligns with the Georgia Standard of Excellence: ELAGSE5RI2 (Georgia Department of Education, 2015). While
examining the reading comprehension quizzes, only half of the students were able to complete this task. Question 4 of the pre–assessment requires the
students to find the main idea of the passage: "U.S. Presidents– Abraham Lincoln". This skill will allow students to recognize the purpose for reading
the passage, and aid the students in their reading comprehension.

feel inferior. The terms 'superiority' and 'inferiority' are seen ubiquitously in terms of gender. A man is often paired off with words such as 'strength'
and 'authority', all things great and superior. Whereas a woman would usually be compared to words such as 'dependent' and 'small', all things... Show

This clearly shows the traditional gender roles because it was made clear that Buddy, a male, was born with the capability to read people, giving
him more power. Another simile was used to describe Buddy's personality. As Esther began to have second thoughts about not going down the slope,
Buddy saw this and "his arms chopped the air like khaki windmills". The choice of words negatively impacts Buddy's personality. Buddy was just
persuading her to come down with hand motions but through the word choices such as 'chopped' and 'windmills' it made the action seem more harsh
and mechanical. 'Chopped' refers to cutting down on something with extreme and quick force. This translates that Buddy's personality was on the
extreme side and quite forceful. This again shows the traditional gender roles as Buddy is described as a forceful person, which can be referring to
both strength in the physical aspect and strength in persuasiveness. Buddy was also compared to the " split–rail fence behind him–– numb, brown and
inconsequential." All the adjectives and the noun used to describe Buddy were negative. 'Split' is rarely used positively because it explains a sense of
multiple pieces and not just one whole. To be 'numb' is to not have any sense towards any stimulation or emotion, which in this case would mean that
Buddy is a dispassionate being. The last term of 'inconsequential', meaning 'without significance' shows how un–valued Buddy's character

Slavery In North America
Slavery in America began in 1619 when the first African slaves were brought to Jamestown, Virginia to aid in the production of lucrative crops such
as, tobacco. When the North America continent was first colonized by the Europeans, the land was vast, the work was strenuous, and there was a
severe shortage of labor. Whites who paid their passage across the ocean from Europe by becoming indentured servants, helped with the labor, but did
not solve the problem. Europeans needed more men and women to work for them. Slavery was introduced as the solution to the economic crisis during
this time. Slaves were purchased for life and forced from their homelands to do free labor. With the invention of the cotton gin in 1793 by Eli Whitney
and the growing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wherever tobacco, sugar, cotton, indigo, and rice grew, slaves worked in large groups monitored from dusk to dawn by white overseers. The
white overseers were well equipped with weapons such as a whip or cobbing board to beat slaves who slowed down production of the crops. Close
supervision meant the slaves had no privacy, and they could barely do what they wanted to do. Profit took precedence over the slave's wellbeing.
Slaves who cultivated tobacco in the Upper South worked long hours picking the sticky, sometimes poisonous, leaves. Tobacco cultivation took
eleven months to harvest. So, slaves were required to constantly care for the tobacco plant production, shading it from the hot summer sun, and
loosening the soil. Slave women did heavy field work, even during pregnancy. In South Carolina and Georgia, planters started the task system where
slaves were assigned amounts of work to be performed within a given time period. Slaves had to plow, hoe, pick cotton, pull corn, drive the mule at
the gin, clear land, split fence rails, and so on. Using the task system, men were expected to pick 200–300 pounds of cotton per day; women were
expected to pick 150 pounds of cotton per day; and children had to pick less amounts. Those who could not keep up with the daily quota would be
punished. (Nolen, 73). Prizes were sometimes offered in order to make the slaves keep up with the daily

Why Did The Spanish Turn To African Slaves Rather Than...

  • 1. Why Did The Spanish Turn To African Slaves Rather Than... 1) How does the rediscovery of the slave burial ground in New York parallel the way American history has generally treated the story of Africans arrival and survival in this land? The historical narrative of slavery being isolated to the south is at the very least contradicted by the discovery of a slave cemetery in the north. The slave cemetery parallels the historical narrative of slavery by its intentional segregation from the white population. It is also worth noting that it took America over two hundred years to identify and properly care for the remains. 2) Why did the Spanish turn to African slaves rather than other sources of labor? What were enslaved people's lives like in this period? The Spanish turned to African slaves rather than other sources of labor because as Spain colonized the continent Africans and others saw economic value in selling human beings. The Spaniards and Portuguese took advantage of the relatively inexpensive human labor force. In my opinion, because the African slaves were considered property, and less than human, they are deplorable treatment followed. Slaves suffered contagious European illness, forced labor, and many other kinds of abuse. 3) What motivated the Spanish conquests in the New World? What were the expeditions led by men like de Soto like, and what roles did Africans play? The Spanish were motivated to conquer the new world by riches that would ultimately lead to power. Men like de Soto led men that were greedy and were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Essay about Colonization In America England began colonizing America in the 1600s, when religious and political dissenters of the changes imposed by the Stuart monarchy launched one of the largest migrations in written history В– The Great Migration В– in search of a new life free from persecution and open to numerous employment opportunities. Each emigrant brought with him/her a blueprint in his mind of recreating the culture he left behind, yet, by 1700, the regions of New England and the Chesapeake region had evolved into two distinct societies. Whether their motive for emigration was to attain a second chance to mend failures, to seek an oasis that provided religious freedom, or perhaps to find a place to preserve the vanishing past of England, the settlers basically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most of the men were single and labeled as "adventurers," rather than the "planters" of New England. The single females, in their teens, were in search of husbands (Hawke, 1). In a consensus conducted in 1624, only 244 females were reported, among a population of 1, 292 (Hawke, 20). The differences in the population of the two societies greatly contributed to the development of each region. With a conservative mind, the New England settlers sought to live a peaceful life, familiar to their former lives back in England. Their hope was to preserve their old traditional lifestyles, rather than to innovate. Settlers of the Chesapeake region, however, being young and ambitious sought to accomplish something different. Because only first born sons in England were capable of inheriting land, younger sons were eager to immigrate to Virginia, where they could own land (Luke, 28). With this piece of land, they intended to make great profits. Therefore, differences in ages of the groups of settlers contributed to the differences found between the two early settlements. Distinguishable factors evident between New England and Chesapeake regions include: attitudes toward social and religious aspects, what they made out of their land, their diets and their treatment toward others. Age distinctions led to other differences to exist in the ambitions of the settlers, which evidently, led to diverse societies to prevail. Being religiously exploited ... Being situated on a map at 40.7594В° N, 73.5028В° W, it can be found between Oyster Bay Cove and Mill Neck on the "Gold Coast", miles off of Oyster Bay Sound. The town of Oyster Bay is roughly 170 square miles and the highest elevation of the town is around 180 feet. Us "Baymen" say, "You either live in Oyster Bay, or you're just passing through". • 4. The Civil War Of The United States Essay In the early years of the republic, when the Northern states were providing for immediate or gradual emancipation of the slaves, many leaders had supposed that slavery would die out. In 1787 the Northwest Ordinance had banned slavery in the Northwest Territory. In 1808 many southerners thought that slavery would end soon. The expectations turned out to be false. The South became united behind the institution of slavery as new economic factors made slavery more profitable than it had been before 1790. Slavery was a huge issue. In fact, slavery was so serious it was one of the primary reasons for the civil war. Slavery had some high times and some low times in the 1800 's, but no matter how it was going some people were always for it and some people were always against it. Chief among these was the rise of a great cotton–growing industry in the South, stimulated by the introduction of new types of cotton and by Eli Whitney's invention in 1793 of the cotton gin, which separated the seeds from cotton. The cotton gin made it easier and faster to extract the seeds within the cotton, in turn making it easier to sell the cotton quickly. Slaves could now clean 1,000 pounds of cotton a day. The faster cotton could be produced the faster it would need to be collected, so this required more slave hands. The Industrial revolution increased the demand for raw cotton and opening of new lands in the West greatly extended the area available for cotton cultivation. Sugar ... • 5. Perceval And Aethon: A Fictional Narrative She waited to see if the cold had woken her son, but he did little more than shift in his bassinet and breathe a few sleepy snorts. That brought a smile to her face in the dim chamber. Joan loved her son beyond measure. In the abstract, becoming a mother was something that sounded fulfilling and she had wanted it, but she had not expected the overwhelming surge of love that engulfed her the first time she held her son in her arms. And that love had not faded one whit during the four months since she'd given birth to him. Joan closed her eyes and appreciated the final few moments of peace before she had to rise for the day. She rolled onto her back, and her right elbow crinkled a piece of parchment. In the low light, she had to squint to read ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... XXXX "Aethon, behave yourself, will you? I'm going to check your teeth, so please do not stomp, kick, spit, or cause any other disturbance. All right?" Perceval guided Aethon outside to the fenced area leading to the paddock. For some reason, Aethon was less likely to misbehave when getting his teeth looked at if he was outside. While Aethon could be temperamental with others, the horse usually submitted to Perceval. But the one thing the destrier despised was anyone getting close to his teeth. Thus, it was Perceval's job to check his horse's teeth, because if he did not, one of the stable hands would end up kicked, stomped, or worse. Last time, Aethon had kicked down an entire stall wall, and Perceval did not want a repeat of that. Perceval stepped closer, and Aethon let out what sounded like a growl. The animal snorted, and his breath came out in cloudy puffs in the early morning cold. With a flourish, Perceval held out an apple. "Look, your favorite. Have a little bite and I'll take a look." After a haughty toss of his head, Aethon bent down and nibble the apple. Perceval lifted Aethon's lips and studied the horse's teeth. "Looks good, beast. Now you can ... • 6. Nat Turner Rebellion Essay Despite North America's large slave population, there were few powerful slave revolts before 1831. Slaves were complacent and passive so most southern slave owners probably felt like they had enough control over their slaves. This way of thinking was completely changed by Nat Turner's rebellion. This violent slave revolt showed people what slaves were really capable of. White southerners saw how slaves were smart enough to organize and plan a resistance and because they were getting tired of being oppressed. Even though Nat Turner's rebellion was considered unsuccessful being that it was shut down in a matter of days, it was successful in that it had a long lasting effect on slavery. This level of success can be attributed to the fact that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Thomas R. Gray asks Nat Turner what led him to revolt he says: Having soon discovered to be great, I must appear so, and therefore studiously avoided mixing in society, and wrapped myself in mystery, devoting my time to fasting and prayer–By this time, having arrived to man's estate, and hearing the scriptures commented on at meetings, I was struck with that particular passage which says: "Seek ye the kingdom of Heaven and all things shall be added unto you." I reflected much on this passage, and prayed daily for light on this subject–As I was praying one day at my plough, the spirit spoke to me, saying, "Seek ye the kingdom of Heaven and all things shall be added unto you. (Gray 9) After two years of continuous prayer, Turner had this same revelation again, confirming that he was "ordained for some great purpose in the hands of the Almighty" (Gray 9). He soon ran away from his plantation but returned a month later. He told his fellow slaves that he came back because "the Spirit appeared to me and said I had my wishes directed to the things of this world, and not to the kingdom of heaven, and that I should return to the service of my earthly master" (Klein). In 1825 Turner had his first vision. He claims to have seen a battle between black and white spirits with a darkened sun while thunder rolled and blood flowed into the waters. Hate Crimes: The Case Of Mr. Byrd Jr. Within the next five years, two cases would gain media attention and spark activist movements across the nation that would lead to expansion of the existing hate crime laws. My recollection of these two cases is pretty vivid, although I was pretty young at the time; I was inquisitive in nature and tended to watch the evening news with my parents: June 7, 1998, 49 year old James Byrd Jr. was murdered in the most notorious and gruesome, stomach turning, hate crimes in recorded history. Late one summer night, as he was walking home from a friend's house after a party, John William King, along with Lawrence Russell Brewer and Shawn Allen Berry pulled up in a pickup truck offered Mr. Byrd a ride home. He jumped into the bed of their truck and was driven to an isolated wooded area, severely beaten, urinated on, and chained to the back of a truck by his ankles and dragged for over three miles on a bumpy road before the men, later identified as white supremacists, threw what was left of his body– a shredded torso– into a cemetery. Byrd's severed head, neck and right arm were found nearly a mile away from the cemetery. Police reports indicate that that there was a trail of blood, body parts and personal effects that stretched for more than two miles and that Brewer spray–painted Mr. Byrd's face with black paint before he was killed. October 7, 1998, 21–year–old Matthew Wayne Shepard was murdered in what is likely the most infamous anti–gay hate crimes in American History. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to some African literature books the classification of these two classes were created base on physical appearance and skin color. The more the skin completion of the slave favor the master the likely it would be for this slave to be a house slave, and the darker skin complexion of the slave would classify them to be a field slave. • 14. The Art Of Racing In The Rain Rhetorical Analysis The Art of Racing in the Tears The Art of Racing in the Rain is a novel written in the point of view of an intelligent dog named Enzo. The unique point of view of this novel is what makes it so entertaining and easy to read. Specific scenes that show how Enzo transcends scenes include the zebra scene. Another is when Enzo kills the squirrel. The last is Enzo's dying scene. In the Art of Racing in the Rain, Garth Stein manipulates his style by writing through the unusual point of view of a dog named Enzo, which transcends an ordinary scene into an extraordinary scene, by using specific syntax, diction, and the unique point of view of Enzo. As Enzo was left to starve and hallucinate he encountered the evil zebra. "The now living–zebra said nothing to me at all, but when it saw me it began to dance, a twisting, jerky ballet which, culminated with the zebra repeatedly thrusting its gelded groin into the face of an innocent Barbie doll. That made me quite angry, and I growled at the molester zebra, but it simply smiled and continue its assault, this time picking on a stuffed frog, which it mounted from behind and rode bareback it's hoof in the air like a bronco rider, yelling out "Yee–haw! Yee–haw!""(53). In this passage Enzo witnesses a horrific sight, but if told by through a different point of view, the scene would seem very different. In reality Enzo was seeing illusions but what was really happening was Enzo tearing up a little girl's stuffed animal. Because this scene was told through the point of view of Enzo the scene really enticed the reader and pulled in their attention. Stein used word choice such as "molester zebra" and "gelded groin" to simulate a nightmarish scene. Stein also writes his sentences in a way that makes the audience read in a rapid yet fearful way by using syntax. Examples of this are the excessive use of commas and short/easy pronounceable words. "The now living–zebra said nothing to me at all....into the face of an innocent Barbie doll". Because of Enzo's genuine fear and anxiety, this scene is transformed into an exciting, fearful scene because it is told through the point of view of Enzo. The New York City Draft Riots [H1]15.4: The Union Triumphant [keywords] Copperheads New York City Draft Riots Sherman's March to the Sea [/keywords] [learning objectives] By the end of this section, you will be able to: Describe the reasons why many Americans doubted that Abraham Lincoln would be reelected Explain how the Union forces overpowered the Confederacy By the outset of 1864, after three years of war, the Union had mobilized its resources for the ongoing struggle on a massive scale. The government had overseen the construction of new railroad lines and for the first time used standardized rail tracks that allowed the North to move men and materials with greater ease. The North's economy had shifted to a wartime model. The Confederacy also mobilized, perhaps to a greater degree than the Union, its efforts to secure independence and maintain slavery. Yet the Confederacy experienced ever–greater hardships after years of war. Without the population of the North, it faced a shortage of manpower. The lack of industry, compared to the North, undercut the ability to sustain and wage war. Rampant inflation as well as food shortages in the South lowered morale. The Great Joe Rantz: The Boys In The Boat The Great Joe Rantz I had the pleasure of reading an outstanding, best seller book called, The Boys In The Boat Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by Daniel James Brown. With the start of theGreat Depression people had lost their jobs, homes, and had nowhere to go. He went though some hard obstacles including being left behind at the age of fifteen. Joe said "The whole thing was over in five minutes" (www.gritfire.com). Mr. Rantz also becomes self–reliant by finding his own way. He also learns how to rebuild trust with his father, and to others. When Joe became self–reliant he knew what he had to do, which make enough money for school each year. He even met back up with his dad to help him build the new house. After Thula passed away; Joe was welcomed back into the home, where Joyce and Joe would "play house". Harry, Joyce and the kids would cheer Washington's team when they raced. Ulbrickson found out that his team would have to be in lane six on race day. Don Hume was deadly ill. As Bobby was trying to get Hume's attention he went white in the face, and was not responding to anyone. The race was four miles long. Washington came in first place! The men won the gold medal. "He had come to realize that the medal wasn't the most important thing he would take from Germany (355). He made some great friends, that no one could break the bond, he learned to trust again. There were not many sidewalks, so he shared the street with the cars, but in the backstreets the cars went by slowly. He was a tall, thin old guy that walked kind of hunched over. The first was brought by Matt Damon against Brad Pitt to acquire quiet title to one–acre of Brad's land that Matt had cleared and built a barn on. Looking into quiet titles and adverse possession laws will determine if Matt can get title to the land or not. The second case involves Snazzy Jeff, a paparazzo, seeing Maddox, Brad's son, dropped his PokГ©mon camera. Snazzy Jeff then came up and took the item hoping to find pictures to sell on it without informing Brad or Maddox. This may be a case of lost property or theft that needs to be evaluated. To acquire a quiet title to the land Matt Damon only needs 21 of those years. According to Ohio law, the person wanting to obtain title fromadverse possession must have possessed the property for 21 years without the permission of the owner, but in clear knowledge of the owner ("Ohio Adverse Possession Laws"). There are four requirements listed to obtain a quiet title starting with using the land without permission of the owner. Then they must treat the land as their own, use the land in an obvious way and for a continuous period of time without sharing with others ("Ohio Adverse Possession Laws"). Matt Daman easily completes all four of these requirements. He never asked Brad for permission to clear the land and build a barn on Brad's land, but did. Brad repeatedly visited and inspected the property in 1986, 1996, and 2002, seeing the barn but never saying anything to Matt. Matt appears to have also used the land for a continuous period totaling 21 years before requesting title to the one acre of land. Brad may have a defense if he had talked to Matt at any time about the property and can prove it, but it will be a hard case to win for him. Hard feelings abounded toward Germany for the atrocities it had committed and for turning against Russia, which had once been its ally. Russia used the building of the Wall as a means to punish and humiliate Germany. Proverbs 21:1 tells us, "The king's heart is in the Lord's hand...He turneth it whithersoever He will." Twenty years later a powerful leader arose in the free world–President Reagan–and God used him to change the political climate. The tearing down of the Berlin Wall ended the conflict and became a significant historical event if the power of compromise. A few events that led to the building of the Berlin Wall was during WWII. During WWII, the Nazi's were originally allied with Russia against France, Great Britain, and the United States. The image was intended to portray him as a hardworking, frontiersman who wielded an ax to split logs to make rail fences. Lincoln folklore says that Lincoln's use of an ax began early in life. When the Lincoln family moved from Kentucky to Indiana in the autumn of 1816, they first lived in a rough temporary shelter. The following spring a more permanent house had to be built. He was only eight, though he was too young for strenuous manual labor, he was big for his age, and willing to work. By the 1860 election Lincoln wasn't doing manual labor anymore. First, the Wright brothers are known as the creators of the airplane. They are believed to be the inventors of the machine for the most part of the world. The brothers created a prototype that was able fly with the help of a catapult, in other words, the machine could just float. It could not put itself in the by using self–propulsion. • 31. The Body By Steven King Analysis How does a child receive the necessary parental guidance growing up if their parents and all other adults in their life are abusive, neglectful, and at best uninvolved? Throughout Steven King's novella "The Body" it becomes evident that children will try to find guidance in almost anything. But, as King demonstrates in his novella, the most common source of guidance comes from a child's friends. All four boys, Gordie, Teddy, Vern, and Chris replace the rolls of their parents by comforting, protecting, and counselling each other through tough times. First, the boys replace the guidance rolls of their parents by comforting each other. This can be scene multiple times throughout the novella and probably produces some of the most dramatic scenes in the Novella. The boys comfort each other in multiple ways with the most common way of comfort being through words. At the dump, when Milo and Teddy have the whole name calling incident, Teddy is cut deep emotionally by Milo's rude comments about his father. This is where King implements the first dose of parental comfort from a friend into the story. Walking along the tracks after leaving the dump, Teddy breaks down and begins to sob, this is when Chris steps in to comfort Teddy. Chris comforts Teddy by telling him, "'Lissen, Teddy, what do you care what a fat old pile of shit like him said about your father? Huh? I mean, sincerely! That don't change nothing, does it? With the great level of complication in the human life, it is normal to want to feel secure and follow a type of lifestyle. With a difficult world, it is also easy to have the need to feel powerful, and to do that, one will need to make others feel inferior. The terms 'superiority' and 'inferiority' are seen ubiquitously in terms of gender. A man is often paired off with words such as 'strength' and 'authority', all things great and superior. Another simile was used to describe Buddy's personality. As Esther began to have second thoughts about not going down the slope, Buddy saw this and "his arms chopped the air like khaki windmills". The choice of words negatively impacts Buddy's personality. Buddy was just persuading her to come down with hand motions but through the word choices such as 'chopped' and 'windmills' it made the action seem more harsh and mechanical. 'Chopped' refers to cutting down on something with extreme and quick force. This translates that Buddy's personality was on the extreme side and quite forceful. This again shows the traditional gender roles as Buddy is described as a forceful person, which can be referring to both strength in the physical aspect and strength in persuasiveness. Buddy was also compared to the " split–rail fence behind him–– numb, brown and inconsequential." All the adjectives and the noun used to describe Buddy were negative. 'Split' is rarely used positively because it explains a sense of multiple pieces and not just one whole. To be 'numb' is to not have any sense towards any stimulation or emotion, which in this case would mean that Buddy is a dispassionate being. Slaves who cultivated tobacco in the Upper South worked long hours picking the sticky, sometimes poisonous, leaves. Tobacco cultivation took eleven months to harvest. So, slaves were required to constantly care for the tobacco plant production, shading it from the hot summer sun, and loosening the soil. Slave women did heavy field work, even during pregnancy. In South Carolina and Georgia, planters started the task system where slaves were assigned amounts of work to be performed within a given time period. Slaves had to plow, hoe, pick cotton, pull corn, drive the mule at the gin, clear land, split fence rails, and so on.
