assess the environmental performance of new and existing buildings.
Standard types of BREEAM assessment scheme exist for common building types:

Building regulations are closely connected to Code, which are the least building standards required
by LAW. The Code flags the future heading of Building Regulations in connection to carbon

Generally, the term recycling is applied to metal cans, glass bottles, papers, plastic bottles, food
waste, and cardboard boxes. However, water can also be recycled every time you shower or wash
your hands. The water that comes from these activities is called greywater. It is not as dark as
sewage water, and it is easily distinguishable from tap water. Water recycling is defined as reusing
treated wastewater for beneficial purposes such as watering gardens, field irrigation, parks, golf
courses, fire hydrants, cooling industry machinery, and toilet flushing. Recycling water helps saves
fresh water and money as well. Recycled graywater applications are becoming popular due to
increased demand caused by droughts and increased domestic energy needs. Water recycling will
soon be economical, effective, and successful in creating a new and reliable water supply without
compromising the health of the general population. By addressing this issue, we can ensure the
conservation of water by reusing what we already have.
A few changes to current plumbing methods will allow us to recycle and reuse greywater as can be
seen in my model. All new residential constructions should use an enhanced version of my prototype
and should include pipe outlets to collect gray water at a central tank. Filtration of grey water
techniques is out of scope of my project. Reusing treated greywater for toilet flushing can save
approximately 25 gallons of potable, or drinking, water in an average household every day.
Additionally, reusing treated greywater in a clothes washer can save approximately 40 gallons of
potable water in an average household per day. This shows that by making a small adjustment, great
impacts can be made. In Texas, no authorization is required for the domestic use of less than 400
gallons of gray water each day. Recycling water can save energy because its takes a lot of power to
send water around. It may also contain high nutrients and is useful for irrigation. Recycled water can
help reduce waste water discharge into oceans and thus reduces pollution. The only possible way we

source is solar energy. Solar energy is a great alternative because it is cost effective, low

Here's a little history behind reclaimed water. This is not something new this has been around for
almost 100 years, for instance in 1912 the first use of reclaimed water began with the irrigation of
the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. In 1966 Florida established the Tallahassee Reclaimed
Water Farm, and because of that Florida now has 440 systems that reclaim 659 million gallons of
water per day this is more than any other state. However the question still remains is reclaim water
safe? According to the Water Reuse Foundation (2009), major studies have proven that reclaimed
water is infact safe for landscape irrigation and other purposes. Also, reclaimed water through the
process that it goes through is essentially pathogen–free, sparkling clear and can safely be used by

Water scarcity is the lack of sufficient water sources in a country or a region. It can affect 2.8 billion
people around the world one month out of a year. More than 1.2 billion people around the world
lack access to clean drinking water.
According to the UN about 2.7 billion people across the globe will face water shortages by 2050 if
changes aren't put into place. That's nearly ⅓ of the world's population and on top of that 2.5 billion
will find it hard to find enough freshwater to meet their daily needs.
As the driest inhabited continent, Australia is definitely not immune to this and must make some
changes. So, how do people go about making changes and what are those changes?
Water scarcity can be caused by water pollution. Water pollution comes from many sources
including pesticides and fertilizers that wash away from farms, untreated and untested human
wastewater, and industrial waste. Even some groundwater isn't safe from pollutants because they can
leak through the ground to underground aquifers.
Another cause of water scarcity can be agriculture. Agriculture uses ~70% of the worlds freshwater,
and still some 60% of this water is wasted due to leaking irrigation systems, bad methods of use and

warming's higher temperatures. That means less moisture in the air, meaning even less precipitation,

Water is a tasteless, odorless and transparent liquid and is commonly described as the universal
solvent (Shih, 2014). Solid, liquid and gas are the states of water that exist in the environment. The
most abundant molecular compound covering seventy percent of our planet's surface is water (Shih,
2014). The amount of water is constant (Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources [OMNR], 2009).
However, only point zero one percent of the total water on the planet is fresh water (OMNR, 2009).
In reference to the city of Toronto, Lake Ontario is the source of fresh water in Toronto. The fresh
water from the lake goes through series steps of purification before it reaches the consumers as tap
water. Firstly, the water from the lake through the pipes. The water then goes through the screening,
where large objects and debris are removed. Next is the pre–chlorination, where chemicals such as
chlorine and alum are mixed in the water. Chlorine kills the pathogens while alum causes the small
particles of dirt to clump together. The clumps of dirt are known as floc. The solid particles are
collected as they settle at the bottom of the basin. To eliminate the impurities from the water, it
undergoes filtration where layers of graded gravel, fine sand and carbon or anthracite. The water is
