1. In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions o
real media products?
Question 1 Media evaluation
2. Lucy Rose portrays herself through her music as an indie folk
pop/singer songwriter. Ourmedia products fit intothis mould and
conform tothe conventions ofthe genre and style Lucy Rose fits into.
She represents herself as an artist who is in the lime light andnot
seeking for attention tobecome acelebrity. Therefore she portrays her
meta-narrative as an authentic singer songwriter.
Lucy Rose asan artist
Her real media products on
the leftours on the right.
This is our digipak front
cover compared to her
real media products.
Ourmedia product is
conventional as the front
cover has the artist on it
clearly andis looking at the
camera as she is doing in one
of her frontcovers. The other
cover is in nature as is ours
which is typically
conventional ofa singer/
songwriter.
Atypical convention of her work
is also her melancholy look and
stable position forexample she is
not running orjumping. Neither
does it look as if she is posing for
a photoshoot making her look
ethereal.
3. A conventional Promotional campaign
A conventional visually links the artist with the album. This can be done
through an image of the artist or a key symbol of the artist if well known.
As we can see here the real
album cover fits into
conventions of a promotional
campaign . As does ours. Our
album cover does this by
including an image of the artist.
The real media product also
does this. Other aspects linking
these two album covers is the
font and they artist is looking at
the camera. This therefore
connects to the artist through
visual signifiers of the artist and
constructs a meta-narrative.

4. Generic conventions of musicvideos: Andrew Goodwin
Goodwin states that within music videos a
common convention is that the visuals
within the video connect with the lyrics. For
example in music videos such as in Jake
Bugg Messed up Kids. Above there is a
screenshot from the music video in which
the music states there's kids on the corner
with no money. For our music video we
have done this by involving lip syncing and
shots of the character looking sad
connecting the visuals to the music.
Lyrics:“Remember how
we were”
Lyrics: “The messed up
kids there on the corner
with no money”
5. For the music video the text is moreclosed ratherthan polysemic.
Thereis more thanone lineof action which controls the audiences pathway of thought. Thepresence of two lines off action adds narrativefuzz, this
therefore makesthe video engaging and repeatable to watch. Which is similar to other musicvideos and artists conforming to theconventions of this genre.
Thereare examples of this on the next two slides.
Narrativebased storyline tries to add narrativefuzz.
Thefact that the audiencecould viewthis product inan ambient way suggests that the artist.
6. GoodwinCombinationofPerformanceandNarrative
Goodwin states that a music video either has to be
perceptual ora combination of performanceand narrative.
An artist such as Cloud control similar to LucyRose has done
this as wecansee from the photos of the manabove.
Goodwin states this to create a sense of para-social
intimacy, believing that we now know the artist at a social
level. Thereare both performance and narrativeshots in this
video as in ours and otherLucyRose videos suchas like an
arrow in the next slide.

Here wecan see similarities inour video to hersconforming to conventions of herreal media
products. For example the shots areall innatureas inour video manyshots are also in nature. This
connectsthe artist to the landscape connoting a hippy independent feel.
7. Thetop image conforms to the conventions as the artist is appearing in themusic video lip
syncing. Theframingis also conventional usingthe ruleof thirds and a mediumclose up shot. The
bottom oneof our shots is also conventional due to that theartist is present and the long shot
creates a sense of anchoringherwithin herenvironment. Theenvironmentof naturethat she is in
is conventional of hermusic videos as shown on theprevious slide.

8. Summary
Therefore we have constructed Lucy Rose as an
introverted singer/songwriter that conforms to most
conventions of a singer/songwriter. For example
her ethereal meta based narrative which fits into
her unique singer/songwriter genre. Lucy Rose as
an artist is not objectified and this can be seen
throughout ours and hers work. This is conventional
and can be seen in other singer/songwriters such
as Laura Veirs above. This is constructed due to
the composition of the shot being just her face and
the mise-en-scene. For example her clothes are
not scantily cut and her glasses connote
intelligence.
We have constructed a hetero-narrative
as even though there is no kiss there is an
assumption of love within the music
video and other media texts created with
a man.
9. Goodwin
• A link between the lyrics and the visuals and between music and
visuals
• Combination of performance and narrative
• Asychronous narrative arc
• Narrative codes
• Para-social intimacy (belief of knowing artist)
