Fashion Magazine Article Formats and Conventions
1.
2. In a fashion magazine, there can be a range
of different types of articles. It is common for
articles to be in an interview/Q&A, written
narratives about fashion projects/events or a
significant celebrities life or experiences.
Articles are often based around relevant
celebrity's within the fashion industry, events
relating to fashion or based on make-up or
clothing.
Article fonts are often plain and easy to read.
The font of the article may differ from the font
of the article title/masthead. The text will often
be black or a suitable colour to stand out from
the background. In various Q&A articles, it is
common for the question to be separated from
the answer through the use of different fonts,
colours and italics. An article may also begin
with a drop cap of a different colour to the text.
This is to ensure the reader knows where the
article starts. It also makes the page look more
interesting and visually appealing for the
reader. The layout of articles also vary however
popular layouts include columns which may
begin with an introductory paragraph. Columns
are popular as they are easy to follow and are
more likely to keep the readers interest.
The language used in articles often include devices to connect with
the reader. For example, first person pronouns such as ‘you’ will be
commonly used to speak directly to the reader and create a
connection. This makes the reader feel a sense of belonging with the
magazine and will make them feel more inclined to buy it regularly if
they feel a part of it.
Other features such as colloquial language will be used in order for
the audience to understand the text. If long, complicated words are
used the audience will loose interest in the article as they may not
understand it. Especially if the target audience is younger, specific
vernacular may be used. For example, if the magazine is aimed at
teenagers, stereotypical teenage colloquialisms may be used.
In some cases, mild profanity is used in articles aimed at older
audiences. However, this is more typical of music magazines of
genres such as rock to suit the personality of their audience. It is less
likely for this to occur in fashion magazine articles.
It is also common for pull quotes to be included in articles. These may
be anchored on an image or be within an article however separated
through the use of larger, bold text or be a different colour to the
surrounding article. This makes it stand out to grab the attention of
those who ‘skim-read’ magazines. Quotations marks will be used to
allow the reader to know it is a direct quote taken from the article.
Pull quotes will often be a shocking part of the article or something
controversial that the interviewee has said. The purpose of pull quotes
is to catch the readers attention and create curiosity, persuading them
to read the full article.

* In this specific article, it is written in first person perspective of the journalist. In some articles, they may use ‘we’
referring to the magazine as a company rather than ‘I’. In my article, I would like to use a Q&A format therefore the
text will differ in my article however I like the layout of this article and will take inspiration from it when including my
own article onto my DPS. My article will look more like this using different colours for the questions and answers. I
have decided to use a Q&A format as my target audience research results showed that my audience prefer this
format as they do not like to read a lot of text.
4. I have decided to research into conventions of Q&A articles and consider questions I could include in my own. I have read
through various articles to establish what typical questions are asked and what the typical responses are. This is to
ensure my article seems as professional and realistic as possible. I have looked into articles from my inspirational
magazines including Company, Cosmopolitan, Fashion Mag and Glamour.
I have established questions vary depending on the topic of the article however
common questions relating to fashion include questions about what the
interviewee wears, what their favorite make up is, how they do their hair, what
products they use, where they shop..
Due to my magazine being of the fashion genre it is important I include
questions relating to the topics of hair, makeup and clothing as this links to the
interests of my target audience therefore they will enjoy reading articles based
around their interests.
For my own article, I have also decided to interpret my regional theme into my questions by asking my interviewee
questions revolving around Newcastle Fashion Week and talk about them attending the fashion show including questions
such as ‘who was your favorite designer at the fashion show?’ etc.
5. It is common for website articles to be
organized into categories to give the audience a
choice of what type of article they would like to
read. For example, Cosmopolitan have
organized their articles into ‘ Beauty, Body,
Worklife, Love, Fashion’. These categories are in
the form of hyperlinks meaning the audience
can click on them to be directed to the page of
articles.
Featured articles are included large on the
homepage of the website as these will be the
articles with the most appeal which are most
likely going to be of more interest to the
audience. Less appealing articles will appear
smaller.
Webpage articles include a range of images
and videos intertwined into the article. The
article layouts are often small chunks of text
separated by images. Small paragraphs are
used to make the text easier to read.
Columns are rare for webpage articles as
they are more interactive. The audience can
scroll down and more images can be
included therefore it is still enjoyable and
easy for the audience to follow and read.
The language used in website articles is similar to magazine articles.
They are often informal with colloquial language to relate to the
readers way of speaking and ensure they understand the text. An
element of humor is also interpreted into articles a lot to make it
entertaining for the reader.
The style of articles are also similar however prose article formats
with the use of quotes tends to be more common than Q&A.
6. In my own article I will use regional dialect and colloquial words related to the
North East to link to my regional theme and connect with the audience and the
vernacular they use. They will feel a stronger connection to the article and be
able to personally relate to the magazine better if it includes elements of
language personal to them and their area.
I researched into website articles by visiting websites of
inspirational magazines such as Cosmopolitan and Glamour. I
would take inspiration from these websites for the layout of my
own as I found is easy to navigate around the websites and
would like my audience to be able to find the articles they want
easily. I would also like to use the convention of using a
rhetorical question as an article title to entice the reader into
clicking on that article.
The beginning of this article shows the social media icons. This is a
feature I would consider using on my webpage article to connect with
my target audience who have a large interest in social media.
I like the layout of this article as is easy for the audience to scroll down
through the article and the article text is split up into paragraphs to
make the text easier for the audience to consume.
Advertisements are also a big part of webpage articles. They tend to
advertise products that will appeal to the audience and suit the genre
of the website. For example, for a fashion article it is common for
fashion or beauty products to be advertised. To match the conventions
of webpages I could possibly include advertisements within my article.
