Michael Oher Challenges
What is the overall "challenge" that the main character faces? The main character, Michael Oher,
has come from poverty. He was separated from his drug–addicted mother at a very young age, and
has moved from one foster parent, to another. Due to all these changes, it was difficult for him to
identify himself with any of the families he lived with. His latest challenge, was his introduction
into "white" culture by being enrolled into a private catholic school. This made him question
anything he believed he was until then. This is expressed in his writing "White Walls" which his
biology teacher found tossed in the garbage. Therefore Oher's biggest problem, was finding his
identity and where he truly belonged.

What do they discover about themselves? Maslow's hierarchy of needs begins with physiological
needs, before Michael Oher was able to meet his needs, he was living in poverty and had little
access to food or a proper place to sleep. His physiological needs were met when the Tuohy's
invited Oher to their home and they provided him with shelter. The next stage in Maslow's hierarchy
is safety, before Oher met his safety needs, he had no sense of security. Those needs were met when
he was asked to stay in the Tuohy's home and was officially offered his own room. As per Oher's
words he stated "I don't want to go anyplace else." The third stage in Maslow's hierarchy is
belongingness. For the longest time, Oher felt as if he was an outsider, and for the first time he felt

Compare And Contrast The Blind Side And Michael Oher
On a Friday night, Mary asked, "Girls, what movie should we watch? The Blind Side or Soul
Surfer?" Replied Sarah, "Both are similar!" Alisha responded with disavow, "No, they're two
different films." The Blind Side and Soul Surfer are both Hollywood movies that are based on actual
events that had happened to Michael Oher and Bethany Hamilton during their teenage years.
Furthermore, "The Blind Side" is a 2009 American biographical sports film directed by John Lee
Hancock and based on the 2006 book "The Blind Side" by Michael Lewis, which describes the true
story of Michael Oher, a homeless teenager who was able to overcome great obstacles in order to
become a first round draft pick in the NFL. Whereas "Soul Surfer" is a 2011 American

While in "Soul Surfer", all people seemed to know each other which indicated that everybody was
living equally for the movie did not exhibit a difference in classes between people and you can
notice that as everyone came to visit her from her town. In the first movie, family did not seem to
take a huge part from Michael's life for he did not have any family member to count on in the
beginning; however, towards the end of the movie, Michael found himself a family that cared about
him and helped him graduate high school. Whereas in the second movie, Bethany's family seemed
to have a significant role in her life for they encouraged and strengthened her to overcome the
tribulation since the start. Even though Bethany did not wait for anyone to aide her to get back up on
her feet and be a champion like she one was for she was determined, Michael's life and fate
demanded him to have somebody to help him achieve his goals. Similarly, both movies address an
important message which is no matter how complex a thing is or no matter how hard the hurricane
seems like, eventually it will pass, but for it to pass we must lose something ,which

The Early Years: The Effects of Nurturance During...
"Although experience may affect human brain structure and function throughout the entire life span,
evidence.....suggests that early experience may be particularly critical" (Rao et al., 2010). During the
childhood years, adequate nurturance by parents has a large impact on optimal biological and
psychological development. This includes neurological, social, emotional, and cognitive growth.
Rao et al. (2010) broadly define nurturance as including "warmth, affection, and acceptance" (p.
1145). Like nurturance, many researchers have looked at the importance of similar issues such as
attention, attachment, and bonding. Conversely, issues such as stressful environments and unstable

Farah et al. (2008) noted that "Prolonged maternal separation...has been shown to exert lasting
negative effects on hippocampal development (p. 794) which negatively affects memory and stress
regulation later in life. In addition, in a study done with children in Quebec, Canada, Lupien et al.
(2000) found that a child with a depressive mother was more likely to have high salivary levels of
cortisol. High levels of the stress hormone cortisol have been linked to "Cognitive deficits and
atrophy of brain structures involved in learning and memory" (as cited in Lupien, King, Meaney, &
McEwan, 2000, p. 979). Further, studies done with rats have shown that limited variety in their cage
environment negatively influences brain structures such as the number of neurons, glial cells,
dendrites, and synapses (Farah et al., 2008). As these studies show, a non–nurturing and or high
stress environment can inhibit a child's proper brain development that has been associated with
problems later in the child's life. The quality of nurturance that a child receives also has profound
effects on his or her social and emotional development. A study done by Pungello et al. (2009)
explored the relationship between a mother's sensitivity, measured by how well she responded to the
child's physical and emotional needs, and a child's expressive communication, measured by vocal

Michael Oher's Adoption In The Blind Side
In The Blind Side, a movie directed by John Lee Hancock, it describes the heartwarming tale of
Michael Oher's rise from a child born in a crime ridden neighbourhood with a drug and alcohol
addicted mother, to a star in the National Football League. However, this feat was not accomplished
by Michael alone; during a pivotal moment of his life, he was brought back from despair after the
Tuohy family, seeing his poor predicament, adopted him. In regards to ethics, actions that are done

Perseverance Is Key To Success
"Through perseverance many people win success out of what seemed destined to be certain failure"
(Benjamin Disraeli). Perseverance is a trait that is key to success in the future. Everybody is going
to face a time in their life where an obstacle is in front of them and they have to avoid it to keep
going. During these times individuals are going to want to quit and give up. This is when
perseverance comes into play. With perseverance people will take on this obstacle and find a way to
get through it. They will not let this stop them from achieving their overall goal. Perseverance is a
continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition. Perseverance

In the book The Blind Side, Michael Oher had to persevere through many hard situations with no
one believing in him. If Michael would have gave up then he would not be the NFL superstar he is

the nine kids integrating Central High School, she was abused physically and mentally. If she would

Michael Oher Biography
After trading their first and fifth round draft picks to the New England Patriots in exchange for the
23rd overall pick, the Baltimore Ravens' front office was buzzing with excitement. They knew what
they needed, and they knew who they wanted: a 6'5 322 pound force on the offensive line. Earning
First Team Freshman All–America honors and First Team Freshman All–SEC, playing in all 11
games and paving way for Ole Miss RB Mico McSwain to establish the freshman rushing record,
left tackle Michael Oher was a force to be reckoned with. His talent and size were unmatched and
unheard of on his path to greatness. His success on the field, however, doesn't truly reflect his
struggled upbringing and scarred past. The story of Michael Oher is a true rags to riches story.

When Sean Tuohy first laid eyes upon Big Mike, which is what he was referred to around school, he
saw a boy with nothing but potential. The dilemma for Tuohy, however, was how he planned to get
him there. It was during one of the Briarcrest basketball games when he had his first encounter with
Oher; a large black kid at a rich predominantly white Christian school picking up unfinished
popcorn buckets off the bleachers. Tuohy began to pay for Oher's lunches without his knowledge,
but it wasn't until his wife Leigh Anne Tuohy met Big Mike that they really began to impact his life
for the better. She took him in, and became a sort of mother to him. She clothed him, fed him, and
even let him sleep in their home. It was through this generosity and provided stability that Oher

The Blind Side( Michael Oher)
Michael Oher is an immense human being. At the age of sixteen, he had a 20–inch neck, 50–inch
waist, and a 58–inch chest. Larger measurements, that is, than every single member of the
Washington Redskins. This fact alone meant that his final years in high school, Oher was the focus
of attention of college coaches across America – grown men taking detours of hundreds of miles to
watch him practice, in the hope of persuading him to play for their team. Had these coaches the
power to design a prototypical left tackle, Oher's six–foot–five, 330–pound frame would have been
pretty close to their model. And yet the fact that he was even still at high school was, in itself,
nothing short of a miracle.

The condition of his being accepted by his high school was greater academic achievement; unless
his grade point average reaches a certain level, he won't be allowed to go to college – no matter how
many coaches are desperate for him to play.
The subject of the relationship between high school sports and educational achievement has been
covered before. Buzz Bissinger's 'Friday Night Lights', which has since been the inspiration for a
movie and a TV series, followed a high school team in Texas for a season. Far from the saccharine,
wholesome version of schooldays that we are accustomed to, Bissinger painted an unhappy and
controversial portrait – of a white community interested in black children only so far as they could
help compete for the state championship; a school with $5,000 for the English department but
$70,000 for travel to away matches; allegations of pain–killers being used illegally to get injured
teenagers playing as soon as possible. Such was the controversy the book caused that Bissinger, who
had spent a year in the town, didn't return until 20 years later.
The Blind Side has a more uplifting tale at its heart. Yet this does not stop it from being an
unsettling story. The Tuohys are accused of taking Michael into their lives solely to ensure that he

Sociological Concepts In The Bind Side By John Lee Hancock
Introduction The movie "The Bind Side," directed by John Lee Hancock is based on the life of
Michael Oher, the ___________. The movie follows his life from being a homeless African
American boy in the projects going to a primarily white school. Through this he meets the Tuohy
family who change his life. They give him shelter and become his family all while improving his
talents with football and his education. In the end he chooses to go to the college his new family, the
Tuohy's, have gone to for generations and becomes a successful football player. His journey not
only changed his life by the Tuohy family's life as well. The purpose of this essay is to analyze how
six sociological concepts and one theoretical perspective are portrayed in the film "The Blind Side".
The six theoretical perspectives I found throughout the film were latent function, manifest function,
master status, role conflict, status inconsistency, and _____. "The Blind Side" made apply these
concepts easy due to its look into the personal life of two very different people, Michael Oher and
Leigh Anne Tuohy. The contrast from a wealthy white woman and a homeless African American

As defined by Henslin (2001), latent function is "the unintended beneficial consequences of people's
actions," and manifest function is "the intended beneficial consequences of people's actions" (p.85).
In the "Blind Side" the manifest function of the Tuohy's letting Michael Oher live at their home was
to improve the life of someone less fortunate. Even though they were weary it was in their Christian
nature to help him. The latent function of their action was that Michael Oher brought the Tuohy's
closer together as a family. For example, after he moved into the Tuohy's home they started eating
dinner together at a dinner table instead of just eating in front of the

Michael Oher Characteristics
Michael Oher, a young teen boy who had nothing left but himself, well at least that's what he
thought. Oher wasn't born into the rich life, but the eight characteristics he carried with him are what
made him rich. Each characteristic helps Michael Oher become a professional football player, but
also winning the love of a kind family, the Tuohy family. So, how do the eight characteristics of a
successful student tie into the life of Michael Oher? Summary: Michael Oher was a young boy who
had to go through rough times as he was growing up. Fatheralong, Oher was taken in by the Tuohy
family after they saw Oher didn't have a home or anyone to go to for help. Once Oher gained the
love of the Tuohy family, he became their adopted son, and soon he became the star football player
of Briarcrest Christian School (BiJog). He became an interest to many colleges and after high
school, he attended University of Mississippi. Personal Responsibility: In the movie The Blind Side,
Michael Oher was part of the Tuohy family and after earning their trust, he was given a car. Later
on, Sean Tuohy and Michael Oher were both in the car and having a good time riding together and
on their way to pick up a new game. Oher got distracted and hit another car. After the blow both of
the boys had taken, Michael made himself responsible (Hancook, The Blind Side). Accepting
personal responsibility may be hard sometimes, but it takes a great deal of courage.

Difference Between The Blind Side And Michael Oher

Blind Side, Michael Oher is a young man who has a had a rough childhood with no stability. His life

these actions can create life–changing situations and benefit one's future. From Protecting one's
family to teammates, perseverance of one's learning, and the depth of caring a man can have for
others. In the movie, The Blind Side Michael Oher has been through a rough life already for
someone his age. From his past, he always wanted to escape his foster home to run to his mother to
protect her. This protection is what will be discussed throughout the movie and this paper. In The
Blind Side Michael meats Leigh Ann when walking to the Gym at school. This was the connection
of how they meet, and the connection is made. From this point, Mrs. Touhy offers Michael a place

The Blind Side By Michael Oher
Most movies are predictable and don't connect with people in special ways. They are made for the
entertainment, not to tell an actual story. Sometimes one can dig deep into your heart and tug at the
strings. The award winning movie, The Blind Side, is a true story about a less – privileged, African
American, Teenage boy, Michael Oher, who is taken in by a white Christian family, the Tuohy's.
Oher is then placed on the football team and becomes an all–star Football player with the love of the
Tuohy's supporting him. Directed by John Lee Hancock and feature Sandra Bullock (Leigh Ann
Touhy), Quinton Aaron (Michael Oher) and Tim McGraw (Sean Tuohy), The Blind Side is a movie
that encourages and motivates people that not all hope is lost. Michael is out of relevance when it
comes to his family and his new school. He has been raised in a drug haven, ran down side of the
city, and the Tuohy's are a rich, proper family in the middle of Memphis. Michael was homeless at
the time the Tuohy's took him in. He was showering and sleeping in his school. Once he is taken in,
he is enrolled in a Christian school where he was the only colored boy in school. Being taken in by
this family really impacts Michael in ways no one would have ever thought. As you watch this
movie, you experience both sadness and joy as you watch "Big Mike" go from being homeless to
becoming a famous football star. One of the saddest parts of the movie is when Mrs. Tuohy goes

Discrimination is a linking issue to homelessness affecting employment and access to resources.

scene is where the sister joins to sit with her brother Michael, regardless of her school friend's racist

character, by learning from Michael's experiences coming from a harsh and violent environment.

Michael Oher Transformation
In chapters four to six of "The Blind Side Evolution of a Game", Michael Lewis displays the
evolution and growth of Michael Oher as he's developing into a more refined person. As an African
American "freak of nature" living in a primarily white environment, Oher has the odd predicament
of adapting to a richer environment that he's not familiar with. Lewis effectively exhibits the
evolution of Oher through his grasp of life, knowledge of football, and development of personality.
Starting in chapter four, "The Blank Slate", Michael Oher moves to Briarcrest High School, a
wealthy private school. He no longer lives in the slum or poverty stricken neighborhoods he once
lived. Now he's having a human experience, away from the monotony and struggles of a kid from
the ghetto. Being as such, he has a tough time adjusting, lacking a base of knowledge of how

Chapter five is a transition for the book, shifting towards how the stars aligned for Michael to
become the prime example of a star offensive lineman. As he grew as a person and football player,
the game evolved with him. When he got more mechanically skilled, Oher stood out. Meanwhile in
the NFL, there was "a new prototype of the NFL tackle that made [Oher] so interesting to football
coaches." (103). Now he was a star, the perfect build and skills to make the NFL, which for a high
school athlete is incredibly high praise. Without the growth he experienced playing for Briarcrest,

horrible student that he even flunked weight lifting class. Michael didn't care about going to school,
in fact in the fourth grade he didn't show up for about fifty days of a single term. Michael's teacher
described his career as, "He was sensationally absent: forty six days of a single term of his first
grade year for instance" (Lewis 46). During his middle school career, Michael was tested for his IQ
to see his academic potential. The testing showed that Michael had limitations to his academic
potential: The testing proved that, "The boy had measured IQ of 80, which puts him in mankind's

Michael Oher Conflicts
Michael Oher faced many conflicts throughout the book. His main conflict being that he had to
adapt to a new life. Michael Oher was taken from his mom at age 6. Michael was then placed in a
foster home but hated it so much he fled leaving his siblings. Michael's new family found him when
they were driving and he was walking on the side of the road. At first, the father of the family, Sean
Sr. Tuohy, drove right past Michael but the mother, Leigh Anne Tuohy, makes them turn around and
pick him up. Michael had to face new pressures such as having brothers and being put into a new
school. Michael had to adjust to a new school where people called him names and he was friendless.
Michael responded very well in school and soon made better grades and better friends. Michael was
then adopted by the Touhy's and he lived with them. Michael now had chores to do and a house to
look after. Michael adapted very well to a new life.

This book taught me that other people don't have a nice community, a nice house, a loving family,
athletic ability, or the brains that most people in Marvin and Waxhaw have. Michael or grew up with

mine. Michael Oher took nothing for granted and learned that you have to work for everything and
nothing is given to you for free. I also learned that I should never give up. People say that all the
time; but MIchael was a true character who never gave up and look where he is now. If you give up,
then you are saying that it is too hard and I don't want to work for the satisfaction or the result.
People give up too much, and all they are wasting is the great idea they will produce or the
satisfaction of success. Michael never gave up and persevered to become a football player. Michael

Discrimination In The Movie, The Blind Side, By Michael Oher
The movie The Blind Side was released in 2009. It is about a young man, named Michael Oher, who
grew up in a poor environment. In the beginning of the movie, Michael was homeless and not
currently attending school. All of that changed when a woman, named Leigh Anne Tuohy, offered
Michael the chance to stay with her and her family. The Tuohy family was well off, unlike Michael,
so it was an adjustment for both the family and him to live together. However, the family was very
warm and welcoming to Michael, which differed from many of the other people Michael
encountered. In the movie, Michael experienced racism, discrimination, and prejudice towards him
from a variety of people. Michael lived in a bad area when he was a young boy. This ... Show more

Michael was laying on the ground because he was tackled but after the referee blew the whistle, a
member from the other team kicked Michael in the head. Michael did nothing to react in a
threatening way, he just continued laying on the ground. His couch asked the referee why the other
team did not get a penalty for kicking Michael. The referee then waved his yellow rag and called
"un–sportsman like conduct" for Michael team, despite the fact that they did not do anything wrong.
Another example of discrimination towards Michael on the field was when he was blocking a player
on the other team. Michael did not execute any foul plays, yet the referee's called out his team. The
coach asked the referee what they did wrong and they responded by saying, "I don't know...
excessive blocking." The referee's obviously did not have a significant reason for blowing their
whistles and they likely would not have mentioned it if Michael was white. Similarly to real life,
people are prejudice and racist towards people behind their backs too. The movie displays a good
example of this. As I previously mentioned, the Tuohy family had a large amount of money, they
even owned multiple chains of Taco Bell. Due to their money, Leigh Anne was friends with women
who were wealthy as well. One day, Leigh Anne and her friends were eating at an expensive
restaurant and while they were waiting on their food, they began a conversation about Michael. One
of the women said "Hey, does Michael get the

The Blind Side By Michael Oher
"In life, it doesn't matter what happens to you or where you came from. It matters what you do with
what happens and what you've been given" (The Obstacle). Many examples from real life may
exemplify the preceding quote, but few do it in larger–than–life terms than the larger–than–life
Michael Oher. Where he "came from" was, in many ways, a living nightmare. But as the
biographical film "The Blind Side" clearly illustrates, Michael Oher did a lot with "what happens,"
doing so with the help of a surrogate family who refused to let the young man 's early life dictate his
future.
Directed by John Lee Hancock, "The Blind Side" is based on a true story of a homeless African–
American teenager, Michael Oher. Michael has never met his father and his mother is a disengaged
drug addict. A wealthy white family who helps him to achieve his greatest potential, the Touhy 's,
discovers Michael and eventually take him in to be a part of their family. Michael has little to no
education, however; Mrs. Tuohy soon takes charge in making sure that he has every opportunity to
succeed. Michaels presence in the Touhy 's household leads them to many discoveries when he
expresses an interest in football. They end up hiring a tutor to help him improve his grades and
boost his GPA in order to be considered for the NCAA Division I athletic scholarship. Living in this
new environment, Michael encounters many challenges he must overcome. As a football player and

The Blind Side, By Michael Oher
The world is far from a uniform system. Each and every individual is placed in a different situation
depending on everything from location, race, beliefs, and economic status. Psychology looks at how
individuals come out of these specific environments and how they transform into an adult through
the trials and tribulations of their growth. In The Blind Side, director John Lee Hancock focuses on
an athletically skilled African–American teen, Michael Oher, who is transformed from a homeless
orphan from the projects into a highly sought after college football prospect through a positive
change in family, school, and supportive surroundings.
Michael was brought up in poor project housing that was consumed by drugs, alcohol, and gangs.
He was pushed in and out of foster homes forcefully being separated from his mother and siblings.
As the movie showed in harsh flashbacks, Michael is deeply affected by the forceful separation
from his mother. This constant absence from the mother or other supportive figures leaves Michael
unable to make a secure attachment to any strong base. Erikson's stage of trust versus mistrust is
displayed due to Michael's inability to count on the kindness and compassion of others which leads
him to withdraw from his surroundings (p 248). This abrupt memory in life affects Michael in his
idea of family and commitment. The harsh environment also kept Michael from attending school,
and the times he did there was no support for him to even try in school.

Michael Oher : Michael Oher And The Movie For Young Teens
The Blindside, a popular movie for young teens, has been touching the hearts of many since it came
out in 2009. By transforming the inspiring story of Michael Oher from a movie to a book, author
Michael Lewis has given us a thorough memoir of Michael Oher. Raised with a rough childhood,
Michael has become the strong person he is today because of his work ethic and influences. Along
the way he has faced many troubles and gained many achievements. The story of Michael Oher
continues to inspire people whether it be by reading his book or watching the movie. Michael
attended Briarcrest Christian School, a prestigious college preparatory school in the rich part of
Memphis. Coming from the poor side of town, Michael was a stranger to the school and one of the
first African American students there. Though the school was not racist, they did not have faith that
Michael would fit in here. Racism has affected Oher throughout his life, whether it be in school or
sports. In 1992 Bill Clinton was elected 42nd president. "You are defending the people who killed
the lives you say matter. ... Tell the truth. You are defending the people who caused young people to
go out and take guns." (Clinton, democracynow.org) Bill Clinton being elected as president was
important to Michael because he was pro civil rights movement. Not only did this have to do with
the racism in Michael's life, but also the Million Man March on October 16, 1995. Led by Louis

when he was 16, and the Tuohys became Oher's legal guardians when he was 17". In his junior year
of high school, Oher began to excel in football. By the beginning of his senior year, Oher was the

that when he was taken in by Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy and they became his legal guardians he

The Blind Side By Michael Oher
The world is full of struggles, but simple acts of kindness and determination can change the lives of
many. This is one of the many lessons that The Blind Side tries to teach its audience by telling the
story of Michael Oher, a teenager who knows little about having a home and much less a family.
When Leigh Anne Tuohy and her family open up their home to Michael, his life and future are
forever changed. Not only does Michael gain courage and determination, but Leigh Anne and her
family learn the valuable lesson of the bonds that tie family and friendships forever. The Blind Side
shows viewers that a person's social class doesn't necessarily define his or her character, racism can
have negative psychological effects on a person, and one can be part of a loving family without any
biological ties. One message in The Blind Side is that a person chooses his or her character,
regardless of social class born into. Michael grew up in poverty, but never followed the example of
his peers of joining gangs or consuming drugs. By not following his peers, Michael showed the
world that his nature wasn't to harm people or himself. After all, he had nothing to lose, yet he never
gave in, despite the constant peer pressure. In fact, Scott even describes Michael as "shy, grateful,
sometimes sad and always... an open book." On the other side of the spectrum, Leigh Ann Tuohy
became determined to help a stranger (Michael) despite her peers disagreeing with her actions.

1. Messages: What are the important messages and themes of the film?
The hit blockbuster movie, The Blind Side transmits the message that we take 'so much in life for
granted.' Michael Oher was a homeless adolescent which has never had "a bed before". Therefore,
he is grateful that the Touhy's brought him into their life and adopted him. One of the themes is the
need to take action. Human action is seen as a crucial element in the film as Leigh Anne takes action
in helping Michael. He also listens and honours Leigh Anne on and off the field in order for his

Michael Oher Challenges

  • 1. Michael Oher Challenges What is the overall "challenge" that the main character faces? The main character, Michael Oher, has come from poverty. He was separated from his drug–addicted mother at a very young age, and has moved from one foster parent, to another. Due to all these changes, it was difficult for him to identify himself with any of the families he lived with. His latest challenge, was his introduction into "white" culture by being enrolled into a private catholic school. This made him question anything he believed he was until then. This is expressed in his writing "White Walls" which his biology teacher found tossed in the garbage. Therefore Oher's biggest problem, was finding his identity and where he truly belonged. Compare the main character in the film to each level of the hierarchy of needs. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What do they discover about themselves? Maslow's hierarchy of needs begins with physiological needs, before Michael Oher was able to meet his needs, he was living in poverty and had little access to food or a proper place to sleep. His physiological needs were met when the Tuohy's invited Oher to their home and they provided him with shelter. The next stage in Maslow's hierarchy is safety, before Oher met his safety needs, he had no sense of security. Those needs were met when he was asked to stay in the Tuohy's home and was officially offered his own room. As per Oher's words he stated "I don't want to go anyplace else." The third stage in Maslow's hierarchy is belongingness. For the longest time, Oher felt as if he was an outsider, and for the first time he felt ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Compare And Contrast The Blind Side And Michael Oher On a Friday night, Mary asked, "Girls, what movie should we watch? The Blind Side or Soul Surfer?" Replied Sarah, "Both are similar!" Alisha responded with disavow, "No, they're two different films." The Blind Side and Soul Surfer are both Hollywood movies that are based on actual events that had happened to Michael Oher and Bethany Hamilton during their teenage years. Furthermore, "The Blind Side" is a 2009 American biographical sports film directed by John Lee Hancock and based on the 2006 book "The Blind Side" by Michael Lewis, which describes the true story of Michael Oher, a homeless teenager who was able to overcome great obstacles in order to become a first round draft pick in the NFL. Whereas "Soul Surfer" is a 2011 American autobiographical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While in "Soul Surfer", all people seemed to know each other which indicated that everybody was living equally for the movie did not exhibit a difference in classes between people and you can notice that as everyone came to visit her from her town. In the first movie, family did not seem to take a huge part from Michael's life for he did not have any family member to count on in the beginning; however, towards the end of the movie, Michael found himself a family that cared about him and helped him graduate high school. Whereas in the second movie, Bethany's family seemed to have a significant role in her life for they encouraged and strengthened her to overcome the tribulation since the start. Even though Bethany did not wait for anyone to aide her to get back up on her feet and be a champion like she one was for she was determined, Michael's life and fate demanded him to have somebody to help him achieve his goals. Similarly, both movies address an important message which is no matter how complex a thing is or no matter how hard the hurricane seems like, eventually it will pass, but for it to pass we must lose something ,which ... • 4. The Early Years: The Effects of Nurturance During... "Although experience may affect human brain structure and function throughout the entire life span, evidence.....suggests that early experience may be particularly critical" (Rao et al., 2010). During the childhood years, adequate nurturance by parents has a large impact on optimal biological and psychological development. This includes neurological, social, emotional, and cognitive growth. Rao et al. (2010) broadly define nurturance as including "warmth, affection, and acceptance" (p. 1145). Like nurturance, many researchers have looked at the importance of similar issues such as attention, attachment, and bonding. Conversely, issues such as stressful environments and unstable relationships have been shown to have negative consequences on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Farah et al. (2008) noted that "Prolonged maternal separation...has been shown to exert lasting negative effects on hippocampal development (p. 794) which negatively affects memory and stress regulation later in life. In addition, in a study done with children in Quebec, Canada, Lupien et al. (2000) found that a child with a depressive mother was more likely to have high salivary levels of cortisol. High levels of the stress hormone cortisol have been linked to "Cognitive deficits and atrophy of brain structures involved in learning and memory" (as cited in Lupien, King, Meaney, & McEwan, 2000, p. 979). Further, studies done with rats have shown that limited variety in their cage environment negatively influences brain structures such as the number of neurons, glial cells, dendrites, and synapses (Farah et al., 2008). As these studies show, a non–nurturing and or high stress environment can inhibit a child's proper brain development that has been associated with problems later in the child's life. The quality of nurturance that a child receives also has profound effects on his or her social and emotional development. A study done by Pungello et al. (2009) explored the relationship between a mother's sensitivity, measured by how well she responded to the child's physical and emotional needs, and a child's expressive communication, measured by vocal ... Michael Oher's Adoption In The Blind Side In The Blind Side, a movie directed by John Lee Hancock, it describes the heartwarming tale of Michael Oher's rise from a child born in a crime ridden neighbourhood with a drug and alcohol addicted mother, to a star in the National Football League. However, this feat was not accomplished by Michael alone; during a pivotal moment of his life, he was brought back from despair after the Tuohy family, seeing his poor predicament, adopted him. Perseverance is a trait that is key to success in the future. Everybody is going to face a time in their life where an obstacle is in front of them and they have to avoid it to keep going. During these times individuals are going to want to quit and give up. This is when perseverance comes into play. With perseverance people will take on this obstacle and find a way to get through it. If she would not have persevered during these times schools would still probably be segregated. • 7. Michael Oher Biography After trading their first and fifth round draft picks to the New England Patriots in exchange for the 23rd overall pick, the Baltimore Ravens' front office was buzzing with excitement. They knew what they needed, and they knew who they wanted: a 6'5 322 pound force on the offensive line. Earning First Team Freshman All–America honors and First Team Freshman All–SEC, playing in all 11 games and paving way for Ole Miss RB Mico McSwain to establish the freshman rushing record, left tackle Michael Oher was a force to be reckoned with. His talent and size were unmatched and unheard of on his path to greatness. His success on the field, however, doesn't truly reflect his struggled upbringing and scarred past. As soon as his grades were adequate enough to provide him eligibility for sports, he started working towards basketball season. It was also during this time period when he first met the Tuohy family. When Sean Tuohy first laid eyes upon Big Mike, which is what he was referred to around school, he saw a boy with nothing but potential. The dilemma for Tuohy, however, was how he planned to get him there. It was during one of the Briarcrest basketball games when he had his first encounter with Oher; a large black kid at a rich predominantly white Christian school picking up unfinished popcorn buckets off the bleachers. Tuohy began to pay for Oher's lunches without his knowledge, but it wasn't until his wife Leigh Anne Tuohy met Big Mike that they really began to impact his life for the better. • 8. The Blind Side( Michael Oher) Michael Oher is an immense human being. At the age of sixteen, he had a 20–inch neck, 50–inch waist, and a 58–inch chest. Larger measurements, that is, than every single member of the Washington Redskins. This fact alone meant that his final years in high school, Oher was the focus of attention of college coaches across America – grown men taking detours of hundreds of miles to watch him practice, in the hope of persuading him to play for their team. Had these coaches the power to design a prototypical left tackle, Oher's six–foot–five, 330–pound frame would have been pretty close to their model. And yet the fact that he was even still at high school was, in itself, nothing short of a miracle. The focal point of Michael Lewis's The Blind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The condition of his being accepted by his high school was greater academic achievement; unless his grade point average reaches a certain level, he won't be allowed to go to college – no matter how many coaches are desperate for him to play. The subject of the relationship between high school sports and educational achievement has been covered before. Buzz Bissinger's 'Friday Night Lights', which has since been the inspiration for a movie and a TV series, followed a high school team in Texas for a season. Far from the saccharine, wholesome version of schooldays that we are accustomed to, Bissinger painted an unhappy and controversial portrait – of a white community interested in black children only so far as they could help compete for the state championship; a school with $5,000 for the English department but $70,000 for travel to away matches; allegations of pain–killers being used illegally to get injured teenagers playing as soon as possible. Such was the controversy the book caused that Bissinger, who had spent a year in the town, didn't return until 20 years later. The Blind Side has a more uplifting tale at its heart. Yet this does not stop it from being an unsettling story. The Tuohys are accused of taking Michael into their lives solely to ensure that he can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Sociological Concepts In The Bind Side By John Lee Hancock Introduction The movie "The Bind Side," directed by John Lee Hancock is based on the life of Michael Oher, the ___________. The movie follows his life from being a homeless African American boy in the projects going to a primarily white school. Through this he meets the Tuohy family who change his life. They give him shelter and become his family all while improving his talents with football and his education. In the end he chooses to go to the college his new family, the Tuohy's, have gone to for generations and becomes a successful football player. His journey not only changed his life by the Tuohy family's life as well. The purpose of this essay is to analyze how six sociological concepts and one theoretical perspective are portrayed in the film "The Blind Side". The six theoretical perspectives I found throughout the film were latent function, manifest function, master status, role conflict, status inconsistency, and _____. "The Blind Side" made apply these concepts easy due to its look into the personal life of two very different people, Michael Oher and Leigh Anne Tuohy. As defined by Henslin (2001), latent function is "the unintended beneficial consequences of people's actions," and manifest function is "the intended beneficial consequences of people's actions" (p.85). In the "Blind Side" the manifest function of the Tuohy's letting Michael Oher live at their home was to improve the life of someone less fortunate. Even though they were weary it was in their Christian nature to help him. The latent function of their action was that Michael Oher brought the Tuohy's closer together as a family. For example, after he moved into the Tuohy's home they started eating dinner together at a dinner table instead of just eating in front of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Michael Oher Transformation In chapters four to six of "The Blind Side Evolution of a Game", Michael Lewis displays the evolution and growth of Michael Oher as he's developing into a more refined person. As an African American "freak of nature" living in a primarily white environment, Oher has the odd predicament of adapting to a richer environment that he's not familiar with. The referee then waved his yellow rag and called "un–sportsman like conduct" for Michael team, despite the fact that they did not do anything wrong. Another example of discrimination towards Michael on the field was when he was blocking a player on the other team. Michael did not execute any foul plays, yet the referee's called out his team. The referee's obviously did not have a significant reason for blowing their whistles and they likely would not have mentioned it if Michael was white. • 27. The Blind Side, By Michael Oher The world is far from a uniform system. Each and every individual is placed in a different situation depending on everything from location, race, beliefs, and economic status. Psychology looks at how individuals come out of these specific environments and how they transform into an adult through the trials and tribulations of their growth. In The Blind Side, director John Lee Hancock focuses on an athletically skilled African–American teen, Michael Oher, who is transformed from a homeless orphan from the projects into a highly sought after college football prospect through a positive change in family, school, and supportive surroundings. Michael was brought up in poor project housing that was consumed by drugs, alcohol, and gangs. He was pushed in and out of foster homes forcefully being separated from his mother and siblings. As the movie showed in harsh flashbacks, Michael is deeply affected by the forceful separation from his mother. This constant absence from the mother or other supportive figures leaves Michael unable to make a secure attachment to any strong base. Erikson's stage of trust versus mistrust is displayed due to Michael's inability to count on the kindness and compassion of others which leads him to withdraw from his surroundings (p 248). This abrupt memory in life affects Michael in his idea of family and commitment. The harsh environment also kept Michael from attending school, and the times he did there was no support for him to even try in school. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. The Blind Side By Michael Oher The world is full of struggles, but simple acts of kindness and determination can change the lives of many. This is one of the many lessons that The Blind Side tries to teach its audience by telling the story of Michael Oher, a teenager who knows little about having a home and much less a family. When Leigh Anne Tuohy and her family open up their home to Michael, his life and future are forever changed. Not only does Michael gain courage and determination, but Leigh Anne and her family learn the valuable lesson of the bonds that tie family and friendships forever. The Blind Side shows viewers that a person's social class doesn't necessarily define his or her character, racism can have negative psychological effects on a person, and one can be part of a loving family without any biological ties. One message in The Blind Side is that a person chooses his or her character, regardless of social class born into. Michael grew up in poverty, but never followed the example of his peers of joining gangs or consuming drugs. By not following his peers, Michael showed the world that his nature wasn't to harm people or himself. After all, he had nothing to lose, yet he never gave in, despite the constant peer pressure. In fact, Scott even describes Michael as "shy, grateful, sometimes sad and always... an open book."
