Storytelling has been used for all of human existence to pass down ideas and morals. Writing was just the next step in allowing additional
individuals to have access to the multitude of new stories being created. When different people read the same story, they are able to glean different
things from it. This is due to the fact that people read the stories on different levels and with differing viewpoints. Upon the first reading of "Dream
Children", by Gail Godwin, a reader may view the story as a timeless, boring love story. However, if a reader dives into the story from a feministic
approach, one sees a deeper plot where Mrs. McNair is imprisoned by societal norms and longs for an understanding of her feelings and desires. In
1976, when the short story was written, the second feminist wave was taking place. This movement focused on equality in the workplace, with the
success of having The Equal Credit Opportunity Act being passed two years prior to the release of the short story and the first marital rape law
enacted in Nebraska the same year. Godwin intertwined the latter law, by mentioning how the McNairs "lay tenderly together on these weekends, like

In his article, The Strategies of Finding a Mate, David M. Buss discusses the act of finding a mate and the characteristics that people are drawn to in a
mate. He begins the article with a brief look at the history of mating and the theories that have previously been proposed. In particular he addressed
Charles Darwin's theory of sexual evolution and belief in preferential mate choice. Buss proposes that there are three components to human mating. He
states that "human mating is inherently strategic... mating strategies are context–dependent... [and that] men and women have faced different mating
problems over the course of human evolution and, as a consequence, have evolved different strategies" (Buss, 1994, p. 241). He uses this theory to
propose nine different hypotheses to prove that despite humans being varied and different from each other, all humans look for similar characteristics

My mother always said "You are a princess and your body is a temple, so treat it like one". As I grew up, that was the phrase that made a profound
impact on my childhood. My parents felt that for me to be confident and successful, I would have to be at peace emotionally and physically during

Sexual harassment in itself is not new, women have been harassed at work ever since they have worked alongside men. In 1840, women working
in the mines were described in a Royal Commission investigation as being constantly pressured for sexual favors by men. The actual term of sexual
harassment is relatively new. A women's movement in the 1970's brought the term to the United States and it became widely known in the United
Kingdom in the 1980's(2). As time has continued to move and women began to fill up the workforce, the issue has become a bigger problem.
Obviously, since there are more women and men working together, there are going to be more cases of sexual harassment. Since sexual
harassment, as an act, has been going on for centuries, there is no conclusive evidence as to what studies pinpointed the problem as to when and
where it began. However, many studies have been conducted since sexual harassment has become more of a problem and these studies deal with
the definition from different people as well as the extreme cases of what was actually said and done. Many case studies are being conducted in
order to obtain a true since of what is being said and they provide information to the workforce as to the extremes of some cases. Barbara Gutek, in
her book Sex and the Workplace, provided a series of sexually harassing experiences from women as well as mutually entered social–sexual experiences
that occurred in the workplace.

He doesn't quite catch
onto the eroticism of the story, and in stead, chooses to focus on the more
crude innuendoes. "...The chrysanthemum stalks seem to be phallic symbols,
and Eliza's "over–eager" snipping of them suggests castration. Then in the

"rooting" bed, Eliza herself becomes masculine, inserting the "little crisp
shoots" into open, receptive furrows" (Hughes 235). He goes on explaining
how the shoots became Eliza's children and how she communicates with the
tinker on how to care for them. This makes perfect sense, but Eliza seems
more concerned with the loss of her own life. For too long, the
chrysanthemums have served in place of children. She is looking into
reclaiming her own life, not finding another electric connection to live
her life through. Hughes seems to ignore this, because all women by nature
want to procreate and have children, right? The androgyny of Eliza's
character, however, would suggest otherwise. She isn't as pulled by that
biological need as Hughes would suggest.
Elizabeth E. McMahan is strong in saying that although people will
agree that "The Chrysanthemums" is a story of a woman's frustration, no one
can adequately explain why. McMahan attributes the frustration to her

Alison Bechdel Fun Home Analysis
Alison Bechdel uses her graphic memoir, Fun home, to explore her relationship with her father. She uses the book as a tool to reflect on her life and
the affect her father had on her. She discovers how her fathers closeted sexuality affected her childhood and her transition into adulthood. His death
left a powerful mark and left her searching for answers. She clearly states this when she says, "it's true that he didn't kill himself until I was nearly
twenty. But his absence resonated retroactively, echoing back through all the time I knew him." (23). This feeling drove her to look back on their
relationship and find what binds her so strongly to a man she never understood. She discovered how her fathers closeted sexuality affected her
childhood, her sexuality, and her relationship with literature.
Bechdel opens the book with a scene of her playing with her father. She uses this memory of them playing airplane (3) to describe the "normal" part of
their relationship. This is contrasted by the frequent outbursts she describes throughout her childhood. In chapter 1 she uses the film It's a Wonderful
Life as an analogy. She draws a parallel between George's rare outburst on his children to the frequent outburst her father displayed as she grew up (11).
This scene gives clear insight on how the relationship with her father fluctuates between calm and strenuous. the inconsistences in their relationship
