The purpose of the lean production model is to eliminate the waste created during the manufacturing process and to increase the quality of the products
(Continental Design and Engineering, 2008). This is done by streamlining the process and eventually reduces costs and production times. There are
seven different types of waste identified by lean production: over production, inventory, conveyance, correction, motion, processing and waiting
(Continental Design and Engineering, 2008). Over production is not currently an issue that Riordan faces with the Hangzhou plant but always needs to
be kept in consideration. Extra inventory that is produced and is not sold may need to be sold–off at reduced prices at a loss to the company or may
go bad or become outdated and need to be dumped also at a loss. Careful monitoring of sales, historical and forecasted, and over–ordering of raw
materials and parts to assemble the fans can be very expensive in the long run. By instituting a computerized MRP plan with a new flexible supply
chain will help Riordan in reducing the chances of over production. Related to the over production issue is inventory. Excess inventory ties up funds not
only in the stored inventory but the costs associated with storing the inventory. This waste issue is best controlled with methods similar to those of the
over production issue. The moving of the plant from the

Project Scope, Schedule, and Budget Planning: Riordan...
Introduction Riordan Manufacturing's China plant is the company's sole manufacturer of the electric fans and related products. The Hangzhou (China)
facility represents a joint venture between Riordan Manufacturing and local partner who has expertise in the region. The local partner is responsible
for supplying the labor, communication with other local vendors, governments, and regulatory agencies as well as providing a small sum of operating
capital. The Riordan team provides the technical and process expertise as well as executive management to the Chinese joint–venture. Riordan
originally chose the Hangzhou location because of the proximity to the Qiantang River and its logistical function of allowing the factory to use the
river for the delivery of goods. The location was also well suited to source raw materials as well as work with other regional suppliers. However, as the
factory's operations continued to grow, this required the use of shipping ports located in Hong Kong and Shanghai, which allowed the company a more
cost effective logistics solution. Management has now identified the fact that a new location in Shanghai would put the company in a much better
position Riordan to increase its distribution capacity throughout Asia and Europe. Therefore a new Shanghai location plan has been incorporated into
the five year strategic planning strategy which will position the company in a way in which it can accommodate future growth and product demand.

: Production Plan for Riordan Manufacturing
Production Plan for Riordan Manufacturing The intended principle of this study is to submit suggestions for a new process design and the supply
chain at Riordan Manufacturing, Inc. The reformation will utilize the theory of Lean Production in the application of the electric fans manufacturing.
The research uses Riordan Manufacturing, Inc. intranet information. This paper will present a complete production plan for two of the Riordan
Manufacturing Inc. locations: Hangzhou, China and Pontiac, MI. Riordan's plant in Hangzhou, China specializes in the plastic fan blades and fan
housings, and the Pontiac, Michigan location provides the customized look and design of the fans. The research of Riordan's China plant exposed
obstacles to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This move from Hangzhou to MI allows customization without disrupting the flow of material and allowing customers in North America to customize
their products. The custom designs will incorporate standard fastening details, which are common to Riordan fans. Standardized parts would save the
company money through volume discounts and would eliminate waste from excess inventory of different fasteners. Once the customer decides to
purchase a significant quantity of fans, Hangzhou will start the production process in China where polymer is more abundant and labor is less expensive.
New Logistics Process Although Riordan has used a few different companies for its shipping needs, the company will benefit by taking a different
approach, which will increase operational efficiency and competitive advantage. Certainly one area of concern is the less than optimal on–time delivery
performance average of 93%, which affects negatively on the Riordan brand and customer satisfaction. Riordan will outsource its logistical
requirements to the most qualified marketing partners. "Outsourcing is the act of moving some of a firm's internal activities and decision
responsibilities to outside providers." Riordan will maintain its core competencies in–house, including the intellectual property of manufacturing high
performance fans and outsource other logistical "non–proprietary" standardized processes.

Riordan Plant in Hangzhou China
Riordan Manufacturing is a global plastics manufacturer employing 550 people with projected annual earnings of $46 million. The company is wholly
owned by Riordan Industries, a fortune 1000 enterprise with revenues in excess of $1 billion. The company produces plastic containers, custom plastic
parts, and plastic fan parts in Albany, Georgia, Pontiac, Michigan and Hangzhou, China (Apollo Group 2005– 2008). In the following sections, team C

New Process Design
The proposed process for receiving raw materials will be through the use of hand–held bar–code scanners throughout each department. As the product
is received, the bar code labels on the containers will be scanned which will automatically input the part number and quantity into the receiving
department. After product inspection, the material is moved to its designated storage space inside the warehouse. As the material is needed in
production, it is scanned and moved out of storage into the work–in–process area, which will allow the system to remove it from available inventory. As
the final product is produced, it is loaded on labeled pallets that will be shipped to designated customers. Implementation of barcode scanners will
enable a more consistent, accurate, and timely recording of available inventory on–hand.
Lean Production Lean production is an incorporated group of activities set up to attain high volume production by using low inventories of raw
materials, processing goods, and finished goods (Chase, Jacobs, & Aquilano, 2006). Using a lean production process, the China plant will be able to
produce goods at a lower cost. Riordan China plant will need to eliminate any waste in the production process to achieve the highest level of efficiency.
There are seven fundamentals to reduce waste. These fundamentals consist of focused factory networks, quality at the source, JIT

Modern City And City Of Ancient China
In 2008, my whole family has moved to Hangzhou, the capital and largest city of Zhejiang Province, in Eastern China. Hangzhou is a mix of Garden
City and Modern City. In the Southern Song Dynasty, Hangzhou was the capital city of Ancient China. The long, rich history and cultural connotation
make Hang prominent, as well as a necessary terminus of the Grand Canal. Nowadays, Hangzhou keeps its rich historical elements, also developments
with modernization construction.
Back to my home description, my family moved to an apartment, named Yinma Apartment, located at the East of Hangzhou, surrounding commercial
center and education center. As a typical Modern Architecture, the buildings follow famous architectLouis Sullivan's concept, "form follows function".
The design attempts to use simple techniques to express the human characteristics of the area. Also, by the way of repeating the same design in four
buildings, a strong sense of community is explored.
Meanwhile, the construction represents Prairie Style. Under the spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright, the architects expressed ideas that linked nature and
common space, for example, large area of garden, landscape lobbies, boulevards, open–floors with plants. While, the interior of my home was designed
by my father, an interior designer. Within the love of Chinese culture, the design of interior follows Modern Chinese Style. The designs require the
knowledge of understanding both traditional Chinese culture and contemporary

Chase et al. (2006) state that "lean production is an integrated set of activities designed to achieve high–volume production using minimal inventories
of raw materials, work–in–process, and finished goods" (p. 471). The essential components of lean production are surplus elimination, constant
work–flow, and consumer appeal. The minute these components are in the neighborhood of supply, quality and cost, this outlines the groundwork for a
lean production organization. A Japanese plan of continuous progress named the Kaizen is responsible for the lean production idea. Riordan can adjust
the lean production concept by employee empowerment and advancement, staying focused on making processes stronger, impact of consumer
relations, rapid merchandise growth and production, and cooperation with suppliers are the imperative strategies of Riordan managing lean. Features
of a lean enterprise include a combined single piece continuous workflow and near incorporation of the entire value series from raw material to
finished product. In addition, demand drives production rather than predictions. This means that manufacture designing is by consumer demand or
appeal and not to become system loading or strict work flows on the company floor. This will help Riordan keep minimal inventories at each step of
the production process. It is also important to know that having a working participation by employees involved in

Comparing The Cities Of Baghdad And The City Of Hangzhou
Base on the document, cosmopolitan was a place where people with different or shared the same ideas and culture existed or lived. I will discuss how
the city of Baghdad and the city of Hangzhou were cosmopolitan. Firstly, the city of Hangzhou was the largest city during that and Marco Polo
describes it through his visit. According to his account, the city was 200 square mile and it consisted of a lot of bridges which makes the city beautiful
and attractive. Mostly the occupation of the people were merchants or craftsmen. In chapter nine, merchants were traders and some even adopted the
Chinese culture through mostly marriage. The manner in which business activities was done also shows the city was cosmopolitan. The city had ten

How Did Indian Ocean Trade Affect Ancient Asia
Asia was heavily involved in trading, from the Silk Road and the Indian Ocean to other Muslim trade routes.
The Silk Road, which passed through cities such as Xian, Baghdad, and Constantinople, spanned from China to the Black Sea. Silk from China was a
majorly traded luxury good, so China played a large part in Silk Road trade. Hence, important technology that had been invented in China such as
papermaking and gunpowder spread west, passing through Islamic civilizations and eventually Europe. The Silk Road also contributed to disease. The
Black Death, a major pandemic in the Eastern Hemisphere, originated in China in the 14th century and spread from central Asia to most of Europe.
Religions such as Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity were also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The volume of trade, number of people involved, and interaction of various cultures was unmatched. The western part was dominated by Arabs, the
central part by Indians, and the eastern part by the Chinese. Indian Ocean trade routes were arguably the most successful trade routes around 1000 CE.
For example, bulk items such as timber, ivory, spices, and cotton were more easily transferred by ocean than by land which made the Indian Ocean
ideal. Additionally, because of the size of the ocean, the Indian Ocean was open to all merchants until European involvement in the 15th century. Indian
Ocean trade also contributed to the growth of port cities such as Mogadishu, Hangzhou, and Malacca. Mogadishu, being one of the Muslim city–states
along the Swahili coast, contributed gold, ivory, and exotic animals to the Indian Ocean trade. Hangzhou was a departure point for Chinese goods to
Korea, Japan, southeast Asia, as well as the Indian Ocean, which exceeded Silk Road trade. Malacca produced spices which were sold on the Indian
Ocean, and the city's location on important waterways allowed it to control tolls and passage. All of these cities grew rich off of the lucrative Indian
Ocean trade. The expansion of Buddhism was another impact of Indian Ocean trade. In southeast Asia, for example, Srivijaya thrived on spice trade as
well as spread Buddhism to other kingdoms. Finally, new maritime technologies arose in the Indian Ocean such as the Dhow ship, used by Arabs and
able to withstand wind, as well as the astrolabe, used to determine

Cross Cultural Communication Barriers
Doing business in a foreign country is not easy, because many people do not know how to communicate effectively with others of different cultures and
background. Statistics show that more than half of international joint ventures fail within two to three years because of a lack of cultural Intelligence.
Cultural differences became the main barriers of cross–cultural communication, and therefore overcoming cross–cultural communication barriers has
become the common problems in the business world today. Most of the foreigners still cannot fit into a differentculture when they have to transfer to
another country to work with different people, even they were international business major or have learned the basic concept of international
management in their colleges. Therefore, it is better to have someone who are familiar with the culture.
When choosing an emerging market country or region I would consider working in for an extended period of time, I would choose China. There are
many factors that make me get into this decision. In order to work well in another country, it is very important to know the culture very well, as culture
barriers can cause misunderstanding when communicating across culture. Most importantly, I was born in Hong Kong, which is a part of China, and I
know their culture very well. Although Hong Kong has its own political system, which is democratic, whereas Mainland China is Communist, their
cultures are still very similar. China has the largest market

In accomplishing this, the JIT lean production process will minimize use of facility space, materials and supplies, stocks, labor, capital and time. This,
in turn, will reduce costs by increasing production efficiency and overall output.
This lean production technique involves using a range of "practices designed to reduce waste and improve productivity and quality" (Chase, Jacobs, &
Aquilano, 2006). The JIT principles use tools, and techniques that allow Riordan Manufacturing "to produce and deliver products in small quantities,
with short lead times, to meet specific customer need" (Chase, Jacobs, & Aquilano, 2006).
Simply put, JIT delivers the electric fan products at the right time in the right amounts for each customer. The power of JIT is that it allows Riordan to
be sensitive to any shifts in customer demand. The main benefit of JIT is that it can 'improve production efficiency and therefore competitiveness'
(Chase, Jacobs, & Aquilano, 2006). It does this by: preventing over–production, minimizing waiting times and transport costs, saving resources by
streamlining the production systems, reducing the capital Riordan may have tied up in stock, and decreasing product defects. It also reduces the need
for storage and allows Riordan to have increased space for production at their facility in China.
Possible Bottlenecks and Offered Solutions Possible bottlenecks to the Riordan manufacturing process in their Chinese facility include:

Second, an article that accompanying the fax indicated 400 laborers at the Yin Motor Company are on strike. This strike could possibly affect the
financial stability of the Yin Motor Company. Third, "while this company attempts to maintain adequate quantities of electric motors in stock to meet
all its order requirements, its on–time deliveries over the past year have averaged only 93%" (Riordan Mgf. Operations – Supply Chain (Hangzhou,
China), 2014).
To address these concerns, Riordan should negotiate with its Chinese partners to obtain rights to directly work with suppliers. It can do this by insuring
its Chinese partners they will maintain the relationship between the Chinese plant and the Yin Motor Company. Riordan then can work directly with
the Yin Motor Company to improve their labor situation and increase their on–time deliveries. This strategy will increase Riordan's supply chain
strength.
Lean Production Principles
To maximize the efficiency and effectiveness at Riordan, a make–to–stock process is used. Filling customer orders as received from finished goods
inventory and maintaining a small inventory on hand reduces gaps in seasonal fluctuations at Riordan. Forging a strong alliance with Chinese supply
chain partners will increase quality and volume of the

Summary Of The Record Of The Peach Blossom Spring By Tao...
In the 4th century, there was a story about a fisherman. After an exhausting day, he accidentally encountered a lovely stream full of peach trees on the
shores. He followed the trace of the water, and entered an extremely narrow cave. Yet, when he eventually walked through the tunnel, the scene he saw
stunned him:
After walking another twenty or thirty paces, he suddenly exited onto an open clearing. The land became flat and broad. Houses were neatly arranged
in rows. There were fertile fields, beautiful ponds, mulberry trees, bamboo groves and the like. Pathways crisscrossed the fields, and one could hear
the intermingled sounds of chickens and dogs. There were people walking back and forth, busying themselves with planting crops. The clothing of the
men and women was unlike anything he had ever seen. Old and young alike seemed happy and contented. (Tao Yuanming, The Record of thePeach
Blossom Spring, excerpt of the 2nd paragraph)
What an ideal life of retreat! Deep in the unknown mountain range hidden a traditional village with pleasant scenery, careful orderliness, empowered
productivity, and most importantly, happy residents. The author of the ancient text, Tao Yuanming, was himself a reclusive figure who quit his
governmental post in exchange of a peaceful rural life in which he was able to interact harmoniously with nature and his own spirit. Under his pen, a

Personal Statement Of Academic Performance In High School
PERSONAL STATEMENT
Growing up, I spent most of my time focusing on my academic performance and I was never a fan of fashion till the age of 18. The high school I
attended had a very strict dress code and every student must wear a full set of uniform, including a shirt, a jacket and long trousers, which led me to
less or none exposure to the fashion industry.
Because of my outstanding performance in high school, I was qualified to be exempted from university entrance exam. I recommended by my high
school for the direct admission to Zhejiang University. Being exempted from the exam means I got extra six months of vacation compare to other
students of my age. After taking off my high school uniform, I started traveling around the world which gave me the chance to see so many luxurious
designer brands. At first, I was attracted by their exquisite appearance but then I began to understand the meanings and stories behind each brand and
design concept.
Once again because of my outstanding performance at Zhejiang University, I was unanimously elected as the president of the student council of the
School Foreign Languages. During this year, I have learned to coordinate and work with various departments as a team. As a leader of the team and a
representative of the School Foreign Languages, I have developed skills in areas of negotiation, public speaking, time management and many more. As

The Relocation of Riordan's China Plant
Riordan's China Plant Relocation
Executive Summary
Riordan Manufacturing's China plant is focused on the manufacturer of electric fans and related products. The Hangzhou (China) facility was
developed as a joint venture between Riordan and a Chinese partner who had experience operating in the region. The Chinese partner was able to help
Riordan to develop this facility by finding labor, communicating with the local vendors, governments, and regulatory agencies as well as being
contributing capital to the project. The Riordan team has provided management and operational guidance to the Chinese partners in the joint–venture.
The team originally chose the Hangzhou location because of the proximity to the Qiantang River and its tactile advantage of allowing the facility to
use the river for transportation needs. The original location was also well suited to procure raw materials and was in close proximity to many regional
suppliers. However, as the factory's operations continued to grow, using containers to transport goods fromHong Kong and Shanghai has become a
more feasible option. Thus moving the facility will provide a more cost effective logistics solution. The management team has concluded that a new
location in Shanghai would make the organization more competitive in the long run. The move would allow the company better access to key logistic
networks and increase its distribution capacity throughout Asia and Europe. Therefore, a new Shanghai location project

Brine Shrimp and Ethanol Alcohol
The Effect of Ethanol on the Viability of Artemia salina as Environmental Indicators
Biology 151 Laboratory
ABSTRACT Artemia salina are used as environmental indicator species. They are used to test changes in their environment. A. salina is sensitive to
toxins, temperature, and drugs. For the experiment, cysts were put into different amounts of ethanol alcohol and their viability was measured. The
hypothesis used was if there is more ethanol alcohol, then the viability of the brine shrimp is unfavorable. The brine shrimp were put into sixteen Petri
dishes with the same amount of brine solution. Different amounts of ethanol alcohol were added to each Petri dish. After 168 hours, the brine shrimp

However, treatment four, 0.1296 (В±0.608), represents that the mean was extraneous from what it should be (Table 1). The t–tests show how different
the mean is in each treatment.
DISCUSSION The development of A. salina will be unfavorable if exposed to too much ethyl alcohol. Treatment two and three have more ethanol
alcohol than treatment one and more brine shrimp died when put into more ethanol alcohol. Since the viability was less than the viability in treatment
one, the hypothesis was supported. Treatment four was the constant and had no ethanol alcohol which less cysts died when compared to treatment two
and three, but when compared to treatment one, more had died, The importance of calculating the average results is that the data would be more
accurate instead of using one set of data or trial. In case there was an error during the experiment, the average would be representative. The average
also specifies that there is some flexibility within the original data. In controlled experiments, averages and replicate samples can replace the error in
the data that shows inconsistency. This experiment can be enhanced in many ways. The amount of alcohol used as treatments could be lessened to
measure the viability of A. salina more accurately. The amount of cysts in each Petri dish was not consistent because there

Dear CEO: At Riordan, the electric fan division has revised the process for supplying the electric fans. Part of Riordan's operations planning, Riordan
would implement aggregate operations. From Operations Management for Competitive Advantage (2006), "Aggregate operations planning involves
translating annual and quarterly business plans into broad labor and output plans for the intermediate term of 6 to 18 months. Its objective is to
minimize the cost of resources required to meet demand over that period." Riordan would start to collect data starting ... Show more content on

The fan motors in inventory will create an efficient development process that does not overlap phases. "To improve the effectiveness of overlapping,
the upstream activity should make solutions 'downstream–friendly', reducing meaningless changes, and quickening engineering cycles. The
downstream should try to forecast upstream results. Knowing how to make time–risk trade–offs and quicken adjustment to unexpected changes",
(Clark & Fujimoto, 1991). With the use of outside manufacturing companies to assemble the electric fan motors, support the economical cost needed
for the new process. Subsequently Riordan Manufacturing proposes to have higher levels of inventory that allows them in effectively forecasting
models for inventory control, production, planning, improving supply chain, and guaranteeing deliveries of Riordan products. Creating a new process
design essentially caters for the new supply and demand of Riordan products. Using lean production can help Riordan Manufacturing minimize waste
from raw material toward the finished product. Because of the elevated demand for the product, production needs increase (Chase, Jacobs, & Aquilano
2006). Global Advantages and Opportunities Riordan Manufacturing operates their electric fans unit out of Hangzhou, China but sells them across the
world, Apollo (2012). The company has been successful in using a method call make–to–stock operations. The flowchart will illustrate an innovative

The Fan's electric motors used in the fans are completely assembled third party units. A local Chinese company provides Riordan with the units and
while the company tries to maintain enough of the electric motors in stock, its on–time deliveries over in the past year have averaged only 93%
(Riordan Manufacturing, 2013). The short Cummings of the third party are affecting the delivery rates and customer satisfaction. Metric two that
should be considered is the shipping cost to the consumer and the manufacturer. According to the Riordan supply chain report orders of electric fans
can be either picked up at the China plant by the customers themselves or else they can be shipped to the customers anywhere in China. The China
Plant uses a Chinese shipping company that offers services comparable to FedEx, but is less expensive. Orders are also shipped internationally by
either FedEx or a Chinese shipping company that competes with FedEx. Two shipping companies are used by the China Plant for international
shipments to assure that timely delivery services will always be available. The services both shippers offer are very similar and their shipping charges
are competitive (Riordan Manufacturing, 2013). Streamlining shipping options and contractually investing in one shipping provider might decrease the
amount of money spent in shipping causing profits to increase. Providing non–shipping incentives to customers that pick up

Being An American Born Chinese Essay
Being an American–born Chinese comes with advantages along with many difficulties to match it. While there are benefits such as better education
than my parents who immigrated from Vietnam and Malaysia, I am considered a bit of an outcast in the Chinese community. Sure, I identify as
Chinese, but am I really Chinese? I am fortunate enough to have family members who don't let me forget my roots by celebrating Chinese festivities
and eating Chinese food on an almost daily basis. Despite all of this, I sometimes feel as if I'm an imposter as I tend to be more American than
Chinese. I was born and raised in America so I am naturally accustomed to the customs and traditions here, but when you look at me you wouldn't think

In a world where pollution has become an increasing problem, doing our best as residents to use only the resources that are needed and decreasing
pollutants is a way to hopefully slow down the process of global warming. To do this, some people have been using alternate forms of energy such as
wind, solar, and hydro. The advancements in these forms of energy to make it cheaper for the public to purchase has been a big step in keeping our
world safe for inhabitants. Hangzhou, in particular, is well–known for having an efficient public transportation network consisting of hybrid
diesel–electric buses, China Railway–High speed, and public bike rentals. Major streets even have dedicated bike lanes as many prefer to ride their
bicycles or electric scooters. These methods lead to fewer cars on the roads, thus improving air quality and reduces greenhouse gases. Being a place

MBA Admissions Essay
Just like the majority of people who are born and raised in China, I was accustomed to the rote learning technique, a quiet classroom and spoon fed
teaching. However, after spending one month in Germany as an exchange student while in middle school, I was no longer afraid of public speaking and
presentations. Instead, I began to enjoy sharing information with my classmates and even asking the teacher questions during the class. My
participation in the Summer Camp at the University of Bridgeport in the United States allowed me to experience an interactive and vibrant classroom
atmosphere featuring creative brainstorming sessions, heated group discussions and various case studies. This filled me with joy and happiness. These
two experiences not only provided me opportunities to gain insights into western teaching methods, but also shaped my innovative character, developed
my critical thinking and piqued my interest in pursuing advanced studies abroad.
My motivation to study the Human Resource Management and Employment Relations program at the University of Warwick stems from my
undergraduate studies and academic interests. As a human resources management student, I have received rigorous academic training via various HRM

Supply Chain Management at Riordan Manufacturing
Supply Chain Management at Riordan Manufacturing
Introduction:
Riordan Manufacturing is a United States industrial manufacturing firm that specialized in the production of electric fans. Using its manufacturing
plant in Hangzhou, China as the main site of production for its fan motors, Riordan relies heavily on its production rate and shipping schedule in order
to complete assembly, distribution, marketing and sale of its fans in America. This dependency has created a bottleneck as a result of high levels of late
delivery. This supply–chain challenge drives the discussion hereafter.
Supplier location, size of company, and financial stability: As noted above, the base of operations is in China. However, both shipping andinventory
maintenance are controlled by the Material Requirements Planning (MRP) software platform. This IT strategy allows the company China operations to
be controlled from a central location in the U.S. and has historically allowed the company to achieve its desired level of growth. According to the case
scenario, Riordan employs "special software developed by the manufacturers in the planning and scheduling tasks of the company. It shows the
orientation between the various requirements and the progress in the manufacturing sector, so that more accuracy in the delivery dates." (Riordan

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Song Dynasty
As just stated so did the Northern Song clan members set up a capital in Hangzhou. Instead of Northern Song so would they now be called Southern
Song. Hangzhou back then was a wealthy trading city and the Song rulers retained their domain south of the Huai River along with most of the
population at that time. They also managed to retain big southern merchant cities and therefore a new period of prosperity began. A priority in Southern
Song was foreign trade, and the government constructed merchant ships and improved harbor facilities. Xiamen, Quanzhou and Guangzhou were big
seaports. The Southern Song merchant ships sailed as far as India and Arabia. The trade allowed the Southern Song empire to continue to be prosperous
although they had lost a lot of their land. The government ended up building a navy to protect the merchant shipping. Passle–wheel ships were built

Jack Ma Leadership Analysis
INTRODUCTION
The objective of this paper is to apply the knowledge learned in class by studying the leadership characteristics and styles of a leader and what
contributed to his/her successes and failures.
In my case I have chosen Jack Ma, founder and executive chairman of Alibaba Group. He has become one of the most influential businessmen and is a
global example of leadership. However, his road to success was not easy. He had to overcome failure in several occasions and work hard to build his
own company and become an influential and powerful global leader.
The first thing that will be covered in this paper is his biography. This will help to understand what kind of person he is, how he was able to arrive to a
position of power and give an idea of his traits and behaviors. Next, an in depth leadership analysis will follow. This analysis will be based on the
theories seen in class.

Essay On Danone
The strategy Danone employed in China was the traditional capital investment method. This was a strategy that helped Danone succeed in many other
markets. Thus, Danone chose to apply the same strategy in China, ignoring the changing demands of the Chinese buyers and their patriotism towards
their country. Danone's ultimate goal is to take over the Chinese beverage industry. Therefore it needed to acquire or merge with competition. Danone
remained quiet and turned a blind eye when it knew of Wahaha Group's use of the trademark and breach of the non–compete agreement. This could be
in part due to the fact that Danone was acquiring other companies such as Wahaha's direct competitor, Robust. I consider this a "give and take" strategy
used by Danone. Danone did not want to rock the boat with Wahaha as it was pursuing its own interests separately too. Therefore, rather than confront

The issues with the current process will be improved through suggestions. Supply Chain Processes Local procurement of materials provides an ease
in production at the plant in Hangzhou. Costs are one area that attention is paid so that they can be kept within reason ensuring an affordable
product. Throughout the process careful negotiations must be done to ensure there are adequate materials as well as manpower to fulfill the orders
that have been placed by customers. The plant has the ability to produce a large amount of stock fans as well as special order merchandise. With
specialty orders the process for procurement shift slightly because of the unique nature of the order and the variety of materials that may be used as
well. With the procurement of the polymer done locally this also expedites the production process simply because logistics will not be an issue. The
necessary machinery for manufacturing is onsite for quick manufacturing times that can quickly move into the production lines for assembly. Assembly
leads way into storage for sales. Orders can be filled at the plant as well as shipped directly to the buyer both within China and internationally.

Riordan Electric Fan Proposal

  • 1. Riordan Electric Fan Proposal Riordan Electric Fan Proposal Riordan Electric Fan Proposal Olla S. Bartlett, Darjae Johnson, Thomas Williams University of Phoenix OPS/571 22 March 2012 Mahesh Singh Riordan Electric Fan Proposal Riordan Manufacturing manufactures many different plastic items ranging the gambit from medical devices, to bottles to electric fans. In the last year the Hangzhou plant has averaged 93% in its on–time deliveries (Apollo Group Inc., 2012). This proposal package will detail a plan for obtaining Riordan's goal of 99% on–time delivery of the electric fans and reduce the on–hand stock of inventory to reduce costs (Apollo Group Inc., 2012). The proposal will detail a Materials Requirement Plan (MRP), a new process... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The purpose of the lean production model is to eliminate the waste created during the manufacturing process and to increase the quality of the products (Continental Design and Engineering, 2008). This is done by streamlining the process and eventually reduces costs and production times. There are seven different types of waste identified by lean production: over production, inventory, conveyance, correction, motion, processing and waiting (Continental Design and Engineering, 2008). Over production is not currently an issue that Riordan faces with the Hangzhou plant but always needs to be kept in consideration. Extra inventory that is produced and is not sold may need to be sold–off at reduced prices at a loss to the company or may go bad or become outdated and need to be dumped also at a loss. Careful monitoring of sales, historical and forecasted, and over–ordering of raw materials and parts to assemble the fans can be very expensive in the long run. By instituting a computerized MRP plan with a new flexible supply chain will help Riordan in reducing the chances of over production. Related to the over production issue is inventory. Excess inventory ties up funds not only in the stored inventory but the costs associated with storing the inventory. This waste issue is best controlled with methods similar to those of the over production issue. The moving of the plant from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Project Scope, Schedule, and Budget Planning: Riordan... Introduction Riordan Manufacturing's China plant is the company's sole manufacturer of the electric fans and related products. The Hangzhou (China) facility represents a joint venture between Riordan Manufacturing and local partner who has expertise in the region. The local partner is responsible for supplying the labor, communication with other local vendors, governments, and regulatory agencies as well as providing a small sum of operating capital. The Riordan team provides the technical and process expertise as well as executive management to the Chinese joint–venture. Riordan originally chose the Hangzhou location because of the proximity to the Qiantang River and its logistical function of allowing the factory to use the river for the delivery of goods. The location was also well suited to source raw materials as well as work with other regional suppliers. However, as the factory's operations continued to grow, this required the use of shipping ports located in Hong Kong and Shanghai, which allowed the company a more cost effective logistics solution. Management has now identified the fact that a new location in Shanghai would put the company in a much better position Riordan to increase its distribution capacity throughout Asia and Europe. Therefore a new Shanghai location plan has been incorporated into the five year strategic planning strategy which will position the company in a way in which it can accommodate future growth and product demand. • 3. : Production Plan for Riordan Manufacturing Production Plan for Riordan Manufacturing The intended principle of this study is to submit suggestions for a new process design and the supply chain at Riordan Manufacturing, Inc. The reformation will utilize the theory of Lean Production in the application of the electric fans manufacturing. The research uses Riordan Manufacturing, Inc. intranet information. This paper will present a complete production plan for two of the Riordan Manufacturing Inc. locations: Hangzhou, China and Pontiac, MI. Riordan's plant in Hangzhou, China specializes in the plastic fan blades and fan housings, and the Pontiac, Michigan location provides the customized look and design of the fans. The research of Riordan's China plant exposed obstacles to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This move from Hangzhou to MI allows customization without disrupting the flow of material and allowing customers in North America to customize their products. The custom designs will incorporate standard fastening details, which are common to Riordan fans. Standardized parts would save the company money through volume discounts and would eliminate waste from excess inventory of different fasteners. Once the customer decides to purchase a significant quantity of fans, Hangzhou will start the production process in China where polymer is more abundant and labor is less expensive. New Logistics Process Although Riordan has used a few different companies for its shipping needs, the company will benefit by taking a different approach, which will increase operational efficiency and competitive advantage. Certainly one area of concern is the less than optimal on–time delivery performance average of 93%, which affects negatively on the Riordan brand and customer satisfaction. Riordan will outsource its logistical requirements to the most qualified marketing partners. "Outsourcing is the act of moving some of a firm's internal activities and decision responsibilities to outside providers." Riordan will maintain its core competencies in–house, including the intellectual property of manufacturing high performance fans and outsource other logistical "non–proprietary" standardized processes. ... As the product is received, the bar code labels on the containers will be scanned which will automatically input the part number and quantity into the receiving department. After product inspection, the material is moved to its designated storage space inside the warehouse. As the material is needed in production, it is scanned and moved out of storage into the work–in–process area, which will allow the system to remove it from available inventory. As the final product is produced, it is loaded on labeled pallets that will be shipped to designated customers. Implementation of barcode scanners will enable a more consistent, accurate, and timely recording of available inventory on–hand. Lean Production Lean production is an incorporated group of activities set up to attain high volume production by using low inventories of raw materials, processing goods, and finished goods (Chase, Jacobs, & Aquilano, 2006). Hangzhou is a mix of Garden City and Modern City. In the Southern Song Dynasty, Hangzhou was the capital city of Ancient China. The long, rich history and cultural connotation make Hang prominent, as well as a necessary terminus of the Grand Canal. Nowadays, Hangzhou keeps its rich historical elements, also developments with modernization construction. Back to my home description, my family moved to an apartment, named Yinma Apartment, located at the East of Hangzhou, surrounding commercial center and education center. As a typical Modern Architecture, the buildings follow famous architectLouis Sullivan's concept, "form follows function". The design attempts to use simple techniques to express the human characteristics of the area. Also, by the way of repeating the same design in four buildings, a strong sense of community is explored. Meanwhile, the construction represents Prairie Style. Under the spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright, the architects expressed ideas that linked nature and common space, for example, large area of garden, landscape lobbies, boulevards, open–floors with plants. (2006) state that "lean production is an integrated set of activities designed to achieve high–volume production using minimal inventories of raw materials, work–in–process, and finished goods" (p. 471). The essential components of lean production are surplus elimination, constant work–flow, and consumer appeal. The minute these components are in the neighborhood of supply, quality and cost, this outlines the groundwork for a lean production organization. A Japanese plan of continuous progress named the Kaizen is responsible for the lean production idea. Riordan can adjust the lean production concept by employee empowerment and advancement, staying focused on making processes stronger, impact of consumer relations, rapid merchandise growth and production, and cooperation with suppliers are the imperative strategies of Riordan managing lean. Features of a lean enterprise include a combined single piece continuous workflow and near incorporation of the entire value series from raw material to finished product. In addition, demand drives production rather than predictions. This means that manufacture designing is by consumer demand or appeal and not to become system loading or strict work flows on the company floor. This will help Riordan keep minimal inventories at each step of the production process. It is also important to know that having a working participation by employees involved in ... • 9. How Did Indian Ocean Trade Affect Ancient Asia Asia was heavily involved in trading, from the Silk Road and the Indian Ocean to other Muslim trade routes. The Silk Road, which passed through cities such as Xian, Baghdad, and Constantinople, spanned from China to the Black Sea. Silk from China was a majorly traded luxury good, so China played a large part in Silk Road trade. Hence, important technology that had been invented in China such as papermaking and gunpowder spread west, passing through Islamic civilizations and eventually Europe. The volume of trade, number of people involved, and interaction of various cultures was unmatched. The western part was dominated by Arabs, the central part by Indians, and the eastern part by the Chinese. Indian Ocean trade routes were arguably the most successful trade routes around 1000 CE. For example, bulk items such as timber, ivory, spices, and cotton were more easily transferred by ocean than by land which made the Indian Ocean ideal. Additionally, because of the size of the ocean, the Indian Ocean was open to all merchants until European involvement in the 15th century. Indian Ocean trade also contributed to the growth of port cities such as Mogadishu, Hangzhou, and Malacca. Mogadishu, being one of the Muslim city–states along the Swahili coast, contributed gold, ivory, and exotic animals to the Indian Ocean trade. Hangzhou was a departure point for Chinese goods to Korea, Japan, southeast Asia, as well as the Indian Ocean, which exceeded Silk Road trade. Malacca produced spices which were sold on the Indian Ocean, and the city's location on important waterways allowed it to control tolls and passage. All of these cities grew rich off of the lucrative Indian Ocean trade. The expansion of Buddhism was another impact of Indian Ocean trade. In southeast Asia, for example, Srivijaya thrived on spice trade as well as spread Buddhism to other kingdoms. After an exhausting day, he accidentally encountered a lovely stream full of peach trees on the shores. He followed the trace of the water, and entered an extremely narrow cave. Yet, when he eventually walked through the tunnel, the scene he saw stunned him: After walking another twenty or thirty paces, he suddenly exited onto an open clearing. The land became flat and broad. Houses were neatly arranged in rows. There were fertile fields, beautiful ponds, mulberry trees, bamboo groves and the like. Pathways crisscrossed the fields, and one could hear the intermingled sounds of chickens and dogs. There were people walking back and forth, busying themselves with planting crops. The clothing of the men and women was unlike anything he had ever seen. Old and young alike seemed happy and contented. The Hangzhou (China) facility was developed as a joint venture between Riordan and a Chinese partner who had experience operating in the region. The Chinese partner was able to help Riordan to develop this facility by finding labor, communicating with the local vendors, governments, and regulatory agencies as well as being contributing capital to the project. The Riordan team has provided management and operational guidance to the Chinese partners in the joint–venture. The team originally chose the Hangzhou location because of the proximity to the Qiantang River and its tactile advantage of allowing the facility to use the river for transportation needs. The original location was also well suited to procure raw materials and was in close proximity to many regional suppliers. However, as the factory's operations continued to grow, using containers to transport goods fromHong Kong and Shanghai has become a more feasible option. Thus moving the facility will provide a more cost effective logistics solution. For the experiment, cysts were put into different amounts of ethanol alcohol and their viability was measured. The hypothesis used was if there is more ethanol alcohol, then the viability of the brine shrimp is unfavorable. DISCUSSION The development of A. salina will be unfavorable if exposed to too much ethyl alcohol. Treatment two and three have more ethanol alcohol than treatment one and more brine shrimp died when put into more ethanol alcohol. Since the viability was less than the viability in treatment one, the hypothesis was supported. Treatment four was the constant and had no ethanol alcohol which less cysts died when compared to treatment two and three, but when compared to treatment one, more had died, The importance of calculating the average results is that the data would be more accurate instead of using one set of data or trial. In case there was an error during the experiment, the average would be representative. The average also specifies that there is some flexibility within the original data. In controlled experiments, averages and replicate samples can replace the error in the data that shows inconsistency. This experiment can be enhanced in many ways. • 27. MBA Admissions Essay Just like the majority of people who are born and raised in China, I was accustomed to the rote learning technique, a quiet classroom and spoon fed teaching. However, after spending one month in Germany as an exchange student while in middle school, I was no longer afraid of public speaking and presentations. Instead, I began to enjoy sharing information with my classmates and even asking the teacher questions during the class. My participation in the Summer Camp at the University of Bridgeport in the United States allowed me to experience an interactive and vibrant classroom atmosphere featuring creative brainstorming sessions, heated group discussions and various case studies. This filled me with joy and happiness. These two experiences not only provided me opportunities to gain insights into western teaching methods, but also shaped my innovative character, developed my critical thinking and piqued my interest in pursuing advanced studies abroad. My motivation to study the Human Resource Management and Employment Relations program at the University of Warwick stems from my undergraduate studies and academic interests. As a human resources management student, I have received rigorous academic training via various HRM modules, such as: Human Resources Training and Development, Human Resources Assessment and Simulation of Personnel Recruitment and Selection and etc. In particular, I worked diligently on the Science of Leadership and Team Management course, which equipped me ... When I asked whether her peers had the same dream, she replied that eating was the universal problem in China at that time, and she believes that her peers had the same goal of having unrestricted food supply. At the age of 23, Yang formed her own family with Bolin Xu and had their first daughter. A few years later, Xu joined the military and fought in the Vietnam War. Thus, Danone chose to apply the same strategy in China, ignoring the changing demands of the Chinese buyers and their patriotism towards their country. Danone's ultimate goal is to take over the Chinese beverage industry. Therefore it needed to acquire or merge with competition. Danone remained quiet and turned a blind eye when it knew of Wahaha Group's use of the trademark and breach of the non–compete agreement. This could be in part due to the fact that Danone was acquiring other companies such as Wahaha's direct competitor, Robust. I consider this a "give and take" strategy used by Danone.
