An Analysis Of Barilla
Barilla: An analysis of the Barilla family business
Pietro Barilla founded Barilla in 1877 it was a small pasta and bread shop in Parma, Italy and
becoming one of the biggest pasta manufacturers in the world. Barilla is a family owned company
that has been passed down through four generations. They have factories throughout Italy and other
countries. For many years, the pasta shop experienced significant growth and their fair share of
downside. They have high–quality products that are marketed and produced in their facilities.
However, with any company does not matter how small or big they have their struggles. I this paper
I am going to analyze the Barilla family, the company, achievement, and challenges.
Family brief history
Pietro Barilla was born on May 3, 1845, in Parma, Italy. He grew up with a family of a baker who
got him involved at an early age to have a passion for baking. Years later, Pietro became a
businessman that innovator in the food industry, which brought him to open a bread and pasta
company in 1877. In 1910, his two sons, Riccardo and Gualtiero took over because they wanted to
expand their father's business. The two brothers Riccardo managed the day–to–day operations of the
factory, while Gualtiero oversaw the sales and promotion. They were responsible for the new pasta

Since the pasta sold in bulk, the store would promote Barilla in their store by using posters and
displays to get customers attention and get them to buy Barilla's kinds of pasta. Barilla would
participate in the international trade shows and won awards high–quality product that ultimately
would bring them recognition and by 1920 they would start exporting their products to the United
States and France. Also, in 1936 Riccardo son Pietro join the company to help them develop a new

Giovanni Alessi Research Paper
In 1921, Giovanni Alessi and his brother began the Fratelli Alessi Omegna (Alessi Brothers
Omegna), otherwise known as the FAO engineering workshop in Omegna, northern Italy. They
began by making tableware and household objects made out of copper, brass and nickel. Because all
their products were hand crafted, there was a focus on high quality products. In 1932, Carlo Alessi;
Giovanni Alessi's eldest son; joined the company. He was responsible for most of the products
produced between the mid 1930's and 1945. Towards the end of 1945, one of the most iconic Alessi
products was designed and made; the "Bombé" tea and coffee service set. In 1950, Carlo Alessi

As a result of this, Alessi begin to collaborate with external designers, such as Luigi Massoni, Carlo
Mazzeri and Anselmo Vitale. These partnerships introduce the world to concepts such as 'creator',
'project' and 'design'. In 1957, the 6th Milan Triennial was held of which The Alessi 870 cocktail
shaker, 871 ice bucket and 505 ice tongs were selected for. They appeared in an exhibition on
'designer' industrial production for the first time as part of this. In 1970, Alberto Alessi; Giovanni
Alessi's grandson; joins the company. He realised that the bond between people and objects is not
just shaped by functionality. This would soon change the way that Alessi's products were designed.
Alberto Alessi also begins to work with designers Franco Sargiani and Eija Helander to design the
packaging, graphics and stands. They also design the Alessi logo that is still used today. In 1977,
Richard Sapper designed the first Alessi project for the kitchen; the 9090 espresso coffee maker, and
Alessi's first designer kettle; the 9091 kettle with a melodic whistle. Around the same time, designer
and design historian, Alessandro Mendini, wrote the first book on Alessi's history, as well as
designing the famous 'Anna G' corkscrew. In 1982, 'Dry', Alessi's first cutler set, was designed by
Achille Castiglioni. Then in 1983, the cultural icon, 9093 kettle with the

A Critical Reflection Of Walmart
Practice makes perfect. We came into this project knowing we can improve from our first
presentation. We knew what areas we had to focus on this time around. We became more
comfortable around each other, allowing us to be more expressive without fearing judgment from
each other, at least in my point of view. At first, we were a little upset, since we did not want to do a
presentation on Walmart. Walmart had a negative connotation to them based on their business
practices towards their employees, which pushes me away from their company. Instead, we were
hoping to base our project on a sustainable company we, as college students, are closer to, such as
New Belgium Brewing. It's funny, but I believe that somewhat make us more close and unified to
one another, being able to rally around a common source of frustration. But in the end, we were
good.
In this project we had to complete for our sustainable company, Walmart, we knew we were being
asked to create a creative presentation, to use our imagination to transform the classroom into
another world. Creativity is the generation, application, combination, and extension of new ideas. In
the context of groups and teams, creativity is inventing or creating a new idea, strategy, principle, or
approach to solving a problem (Beebe and Masterson 302). A technique we used to enhance our
team creativity was group brainstorming. Brainstorming is a creative problem–solving method,
developed by Alex Osborn, designed to help a group

Group Reflection Paper
Forum 12
Johan Rivera
Liberty University
Introduction
In this forum, will be addressing the important concepts learned about groups. Will be describing
my personal experience working with my assigned group for this course. Furthermore, will be
addressing the main three concepts learned through the duration of this course. Those concepts are
tribulation, integrity, and team.
Group
"Group work is a teaching strategy that promotes academic achievement and socialization"
(Frykedal, Chiriac, 2011). This method is often used since allow individuals to combine their skills

39). Part of the role of an efficient leader is to recognize that conflicts and unexpected situations will
be presented in any type of organization. Leaders will have to make critical and tough decisions that
might bring tribulation. A leader should be able to take control of the situation and provide guidance,
always taking in consideration the safety and well being of those who follow. It is important that
leaders make choices that "protects the organization and others from undue distraction to the
mission" (Dees, 2013, p. 44).
Integrity
"Integrity is simply telling the truth or staying true to a set of values" (Dees, 2013, p80). Integrity is
essential in the effectiveness of a leader. "Integrity is often cited as a critical component of
leadership"(Palanski, Simons, & Treviño, 2011). An effective leader understands the need to be an
example of honesty and truthfulness." While leaders may wholeheartedly agree with the concept for
a subordinate to fully embrace effective followership, he or she must trust in the leader/follower
relationship"(Satterlee, 2013, p. 7). Followers will place their trust in a leader that act upon values,
moral principles and beliefs. Leaders should understand that every decision would have an effect on
those around themselves. "The more choices you make based on integrity, the more this highly
prized value will affect your relationships with family and friends, and finally, the fundamental
acceptance of yourself"(Dees, 2013, p.

Yalom: Group Scenarios
In the small clip, from the beginning, Yalom is observed activating the focus on the here–and–now.
He discusses in chapter six that he would begin this process in the first group session, after all
members discuss their reason for joining the group. He would highlight that all members have likely
made impressions of each other, and then invites them to talk about what they came up with. In the
group video, this intervention stirred a conversation that provided the opportunity for members to
enact their styles of relating to others with members of the group, Alice became quiet, Alan rescued
her, etc. I think the process became evident as the first comment made was that Alice was quiet. It
seems that meanwhile she asserts that she tries to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He believes that therapist transparency can lead to "here–and–now activation and process
illumination" (p. 218). In addition, it seems that Yalom believes that by being authentic the therapist
can decentralize her role, and can "foster a deeper exploration on the client's part" (p. 218).
Meanwhile mixed results have been reported regarding self–disclosure (Audet, 2011), I find Yalom's
argument compelling as he asserts the following: "I am advocating that therapists relate
authentically to clients in the here–and–now of the therapy hour, not that they reveal their past and
present in a detailed manner" (p. 223). He goes on to explain that he doesn't believe it is helpful
when therapists talk about ways they have overcome personal challenges, indicating appropriate
boundaries when it comes to transparency, and clients' wellbeing in mind. I agree that certain forms
of self–disclosure can pose ethical concerns, as Epstein (1994) indicates; however, some clients will
benefit from the therapist's disclosure (Audet & Everall, 2003), and their curiosity does not come
from intentionally breaking boundaries, and a therapist's rigid standpoint could hinder the
relationship. I have seen therapists have a strong reaction when clients asked a personal question,
however, I believe that it makes sense that some clients would need to feel connected by knowing
something about the therapist for their comfort level to

My Failures During My Group Project
Another failure that I faced during this class was working with my group project. I am not used to
having group projects but whenever I did have them, I always worked with people I knew well. I
knew I had to try my best and put effort in communicating more with my group members. Although,
I tried my best to communicate with others, despite a prolonged or no response. I still failed in
asking questions or clarifying information I was not certain about with my group, during the
meetings. Therefore, causing me to lose time with my work and stressing about my uncertainties. I
did not take the time to think about any questions or comments before group meetings, as well as
ask for help. I thought that communicating over text messages would be easy,

They helped our group discussion become more informative. Some people are the Administrator,

She kept our discussion on track and provided different information which help us to prepare the

Just in Time Distribution Essay
Just–In–Time Distribution and Barilla SpA
Anybody who knows something about business had heard the term Just–in–time (JIT) inventory. It
involves producing only what is need, when it is needed. The principle of Just in time is to eliminate
sources of manufacturing waste by getting the right quantity of raw materials and producing the
right quantity of products in the right place at the right time.(1) In this way, manufactures receive
parts and materials "just in time" to meet the day's manufacturing quota with hardly any extra.(3)
JIT is a manufacturing management method developed in Japan during the 70's to meet customer
demands. The individual most credited with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One study showed that the average benefits accrued by US manufactures over 5 years from using
the JIT system were extraordinary. There was 90 percent reduction in the manufacturing cycle time,
70 percent reductions in inventory, 50 percent reductions in labor costs, and 80 percent reductions in
space requirements.(2) All these benefits affect the channel relationship in some way and will
benefit the end user, whether it's the cost of the product or the quality.
Now that I've given a little overview on the JIT system, I want to talk about a new concept that a
company called Barilla SpA wanted to try called, Just–in–time Distribution (JITD). But before I talk
about JITD I want to tell you a little about the company.
Barilla SpA was founded in 1875 when Pietro Barilla opened a small shop in Parma, Italy.
Connected to the shop was a small laboratory that Pietro used to make the pasta and bread products
that he sold in his store. Eventually over the years, the company grew and was handed over to
Pietro's grandchildren, Pietro and Gianni. Over this time, Barilla evolved from the small

Barilla Distributors: Implementing Just In Time Distribution
Executive Summary
My decision is to implement Just in time distribution (JITD) to Barilla Distributors to reduce
distribution costs, inventory levels and manufacturing costs. This would enable Barilla to improve
relationships with their distributors and provide them with more objective data so that they can
improve their own planning procedures. Barilla Operations will have more control on what is being
shipped out so that shipments can be planned to optimize full loads. Manufacturing costs can be
reduced if schedules are planned in order to enhance operations output....i.e. Reduce down times and
ensure long runs of like products to reduce energy costs. They would also be able to achieve
financial gains by reducing the large amounts of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their incentives were based on achieving sales targets set for the canvass periods. These complex
systems created resistance from their own internal sales and marketing organization regarding the
implementation as they felt that their jobs would be threatened if the JITD program was put in place.
Maggiali would need to convince them of the benefits of the change. In order to convince customers
to implement the program, Barilla will need to trial the program on their own distribution channels
in order to trouble shoot any problems that they encounter and once they have perfected the
program, they will be able to sell the idea to their customers.
Criteria
In this case, implementing the JITD program would allow Barilla Operations to take control of their
own manufacturing process and be able to schedule which products are shipped out and control
when they ship. The relationship between Barilla and their Distributors will improve as they will
need to share information in order for them to achieve their goals. Barilla Operations will be able to
improve their own planning procedures which would allow them to evenly distribute the workload
on their manufacturing and logistics systems. They will be able to reduce any bottlenecks
encountered in certain areas and run more efficiently without disruptions in supply. The ultimate
goal is to reduce the costs within the supply chain.

My experience with my group could be considered a bit of a wild ride. At the beigining there was

could help with on the project. Because I was a over worried that no one would respond at first, I
had already done essays on cinematography and changing the theme of "Stagecoach" ahead of time,

The History Of Algebra, How It Started, The Most Study...
This paper will show the history of algebra, how it started, and how it grew to be what it is today. It
will show that it started it developments from the basic arithmetic operations that first were used to
solve simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division and how it went incorporating more
operations that permitted it to solve problems that involve abstract concepts. It will show that the
recorded history begins mostly with the Egyptian papyrus, and how it went passing from one
civilization. Moreover; it will show how each civilization contributed with something that at the end
helped it to become what it is today, the most study mathematical subject around the world.
1. Introductions
However; the recorded history begins with the Rhind Papyrus from Egypt and clay tablets from
Babylon, which describe the basic mathematical operations that include an unknown variable, then
it passed to India where written records in Sanskrit show that the Indian were already describing
verbally what seems to be the description of unknown variables. Next the recorded history passed to
the Greeks, where Diophantus published the b books that describe the syncopated algebra which are
considered to be the basis of all algebra used and studied by European mathematician.
Moreover; it was in Europe where the recorded history of the algebra really was taken to the next
level. The lead was taken by Fibonacci with is book liber abaci, who added the application of

The distributors do not use forecasting systems or sophisticated analytical tools for determining
order quantities and they have very limited and no seasonal demand data. Accurate demand
forecasting is essential for companies and can be obtained by utilizing central demand information
where each stage of the supply chain understands the forecast data.
Inflated Orders
Since Barilla's distributors and retailers only perform periodic reviews of their inventory systems at
times they would experience stock outs, which would create demand fluctuations in products when
they were temporarily out of stock. In order to meet the demands Barilla would have to change their
manufacturing and logistics operations which strained the production facility because of the
different processes procedures in place for "dry" and "fresh" products.
Lead Time
Barilla is experiencing lead time fluctuations in their product lines, which vary from 8 to 14 days
from the time the order is placed to the time the product is received by the distributors. In some
instances supermarkets would place their orders by fax and it would take up to 24 to 48 hours for it
to be received by the distributor. The ordering processes are outdated, which adds to variability and
reduced inventory and service levels for the company and their distributors and retailers.

Advantage and Disadvange of Running a Family Business
Topic: Advantages and Disadvantages: Doing Business
The benefits of running of family business far outweigh the disadvantages. Relate this to your
personal experience. Use specific examples and provide appropriate evidence to support your
answer.
The definition of family business is a group of family members have controlling shares in a business
(IFC Corporate Governance). Today, most family has their own company or factory. The family

said: 'The competition to hire the best will increase in the years ahead. Companies that give extra
flexibility to their employees will have the edge in this area.'
Finally, the last disadvantage of running family business, family members are easier to be lazy. On
the one hand, family members hold shares in company; they believe they would not lose this
company. So it would lack of successful succession. Of course, this situation is not always
happening. But when the stock is decreased, they shirk responsibility to each other. On the other
hand, if the head of the family dies, this situation will be more serious. No one will go to lead them;
but all of them want to be the head of the family business. They may not have ability to lead family
business because of this lazy and shirk responsibility. A serious war will appear between family
members. I think this is the biggest disadvantage of running family business.
In conclusion, there are three benefits and disadvantage of running a family business. Even there are
many disadvantages in running a big family business. Although in running family business case,

Have you ever been tapped to make an impromptu group presentation with a half hour's notice?
When is the last time someone asked you for a "brief update" on the status of an upcoming project in
"about an hour"?
Did you ever stand up in the heat of a membership meeting where negativity prevailed and asked
members to consider a more positive stance on an issue?
These scenarios require you to "think on your feet" – give an impromptu speech – if you do not
want to embarrass yourself, and want to demonstrate your knowledge and mental organization.

You can apply the same mantra to impromptu presentations. Sear the basic structure of a
presentation into your memory and volunteer to give speeches on the spot. The more you practice
giving impromptu presentations, the more comfortable you become doing so. Just as people trained
to respond to emergencies at a moment's notice, you will be able to respond with a solid presentation
at a moment's notice.
Consider the following key points as well as how to best communicate the content that is necessary
for the requested presentation.
Please With Threes
A lesson I teach early in my presentation skills workshops, and that I learned in school and in
Toastmasters clubs, is to "please with threes". Otherwise called the rule of threes, this means that
you create a presentation using a speech structure that consists of three main components: an
opening, a body, and a closing. Manage these three major parts of a presentation and your speech
will be organized every time.
Get Off on the Right Foot
Develop an attention–grabbing opening. On short notice, few people expect you to be witty or
humorous. Typically, last–minute presenters are expected to address a specific issue or concern.
Implement the following techniques, however, and you just might come across as witty and instantly
engaging in spite of your last–minute

Soccer Team Reflection Paper
In the beginning of class, we watched a film that reminded me of high school varsity soccer because
some of my coaches were both theory Y and theory X. My coaches would act in a very direct and
negative form which made us not want to continue being in the team but in the end, the coaches
taught us many leadership skills and also discipline which was key in a sports team. I personally felt
like I was both theories because I was the team captain so the ways I was communicate with my
players made me feel like I am a very mean person but I wanted my team mates to know the
expectations in order to be in a very competitive soccer team. I felt like I had to be both theories in
order to get my message across in the best form as possible. I had to be harsh in order to show that
my coaches and I were not just playing around, we were dedicating our time into make the best
soccer team in the USD 500 district. Towards the end of the soccer season I was seeing positive
results from each and every one of the players. It made me very happy that I got my message across
even though I wasn't naturally a theory X but I had to put myself in the players position. I felt like if
I was only a theory Y, half of the team wouldn't take me serious. The coaches in the film were a
great example of how both theories could have a good result when it comes to forming a team.
Having diversity among the team makes a leader think about every angle of how to approach the
whole team because having diversity means that individuals have different backgrounds. It can be
difficult to address the whole team on what's expected and the standards that they should be aiming
for in order to continue being in the soccer team. As a leader of the soccer team, it was very
challenging at some situations because all my teammates were depending on me in order to have
positive results.
The team builder activity that we did in class was very interesting to do because every person in the
group had restrictions and limitations on what they could contribute in the group which made me a
bit challenging especially because time was against our favor. This activity made me realize that
every person can make a difference based on what capabilities they have and this

Comparison Between Group D And Group C
What is seen in the data is that there is not a steady decline in the reaction time when you compare
each column to the previous or next respectively. The time increases when comparing Group A to
Group B, but not Group B to Group C. The same also applies to Group C to Group D and then a
decrease from Group D to Group E. Figure 1 shows a clearer picture of the RT when compared to all
of the reaction time. Even though the time decreases in some areas, there is clear increase or RT
when looking from the youngest to olderst. When looking at the graph, there is statistical
significance in some of the areas and not in others. All data was calculated at a 95% confidence
level. The difference from Group A to Group B is only 0.2538 seconds, but when the data is
compared to each other, the probability (P–Value) is 0.000287. This is a significant difference
between the two. From Group B to Group C, there is a 0.01 second decrease in time, which has a P–
Value of 0.4698. This is not a statistical difference and leaves room for this time to not be a normal
outcome. Group C and Group D has a 0.2289 seconds increase, but when calculated with the raw
data, there is no significant difference with a P–Value of 0.0833. Group D to Group E is a 0.1252
decrease with a P–Value of 0.3719 making it not significant. Group E to Group F has a 0.6351

Barilla Spa Questions
1. What is the impact of the fluctuations seen in Exhibit 12? What are the underlying drivers of the
fluctuation we see in this exhibit? Your analysis should consider full range of implications to the
entire channel, and not just Barilla.
Per exhibit 12 the impact of order fluctuations are as follows:
– Creates a bullwhip effect at Barilla.
– Resource and material planning becomes cumbersome and inefficient.
– Might increase the lead time because of the bullwhip effect.
– Reduces overall operational efficiency.
– Reduces the overall profitability due to reduction in efficiency.
– Reduces the utilization of central distribution center.
– The distributor must build excess ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Distributors would not stock their inventory with Barilla products that exceed the real demand.
Thus, the JITD program would help Barilla's partners reduce distribution costs and allow them to be
more efficient. The project also might help improve Barilla's relationship with its partners, as Barilla
won't exert pressure on distributors to hold more finished products than necessary. The
implementation of the program will eventually improve the planning procedures for Barilla and
enable the company to provide exceptional service to its customers at low costs.
On the other hand, the JITD program will not be implemented without costs to Barilla. Although it
is expected to highly benefit Barilla, JITD program would be costly to implement. Barilla would be
responsible to provide its distributers with the technology needed to report daily sales. Moreover, it
might not be possible for some retailers to report daily sales because their stores are not equipped
with point–of–sale technology that captures sales data. Also, distributors might need to hire new
employees in order to be able to prepare sales reports. In addition, implementing JITD means that
Barilla would do the work for its distributors. This might cause

Leading In The Here And Now: Video Analysis
During the "Part III: Conflict and Summation" in the video Group Work: Leading in the Here and
Now (Association for Specialists in Group Work, n.d.), the group worked through a tremendous
amount of conflict. The main driving force for the conflict was based on self–disclosure that group
member Jean offered to the group, surrounding her feelings of anger and distrust with the other
members. Her comments sparked the group to investigate and explore their own feelings and
emotions not only towards Jean, but the group itself. Corey, Corey, and Corey (2010) noted that, "by
taking risks in disclosing here–and–now observations and reactions, members are actively creating
trust and making it possible to engage in deeper self–exploration," (p. 253). While Jean's comments
upset some individuals in the group, it initiated open and honest responses from the rest of the
group. Even though Jean was the primary driver of the conflict during this session, I was particularly
interested in Art's feedback and experience during the video. His personal self–disclosure and
involvement within the group conflict hit on the key points of this discussion post: personal
awareness and successful resolution ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the course of the video, as with all of the video's, I thought that Dr. Carroll was extremely
hands–off. While Art's observation was real for him, and the conflict itself eventually helped him
resolve his own issues within the group (authority), I did not see Dr. Carroll using Jean as a means
to engage the group in discussion. She was rather inactive during all of the videos, and allowed the
group to work out their differences amongst themselves. Her almost silent–observer role was
extremely non–confrontational, yet Art challenged her directly, addressing her authority

At the beginning of this course, students were made to understand the importance and benefits of

In solving this issue, the group should be more open to new ideas. My initial motivation towards the
group was purely intrinsic but on the long run it became extrinsic (became all about results.) as I did
not see the need to be intrinsically motivated when my contribution to the group during the first
presentation was totally discarded. The need theory wasn't properly taken into consideration in my
group as some people didn't care to know about what motivates others in the group. There were
some elements of the free rider effect because of some people feeling that their input to the group
was the best and no order input can be better than what they have offered. Carrying fellow group
members along, making them have a sense of responsibility and not always treating their
contribution as not worthy will solve the issue of the free rider effect in the group. As the expectancy
theory suggests that people will expend energy if they think it will pay off so despite all my negative
observations about the group, I was able to put all behind me because I wanted a very good outcome
for the group. The end goal of achieving excellence in the project was also a motivating factor
within the group which meant compromises had to be made to achieve

Just in Time Distribution
Just–In–Time Distribution and Barilla SpA
Anybody who knows something about business had heard the term Just–in–time (JIT) inventory. It
involves producing only what is need, when it is needed. The principle of Just in time is to eliminate
sources of manufacturing waste by getting the right quantity of raw materials and producing the
right quantity of products in the right place at the right time.(1) In this way, manufactures receive
parts and materials "just in time" to meet the day's manufacturing quota with hardly any extra.(3)
JIT is a manufacturing management method developed in Japan during the 70's to meet customer
demands. The individual most credited with the development of JIT is Taiichi Ohno, the vice

Barilla revolutionalized the Italian pasta industry's marketing practices by creating a strong brand
name and image for its pasta and by 1968 hit double–digits in sales growth. Due to their size and
amount of products, Barilla was organized into seven divisions: three pasta divisions, a bakery
products division, the fresh bread division, the catering division, and the international division. By
1990, Barilla became the largest pasta manufacture in the world (which it sill is today).(4) Barilla
SpA had a couple different channels of distribution.( Illustration shown on last page of report.) First
of all, Barilla divided it entire product line into two general categories: 1.)Fresh products, which
included fresh pasta products that had a 21 day shelf life and fresh bread that had a one day shelf life
and 2.)Dry products, which included dry pasta that had long shelf life of 18 to 24 months and longer
shelf–life bakery products such as cookies, flour, etc. that had a medium shelf life of 10 to 12 weeks.
Most of Barilla's products were shipped from the plants in which they were made to one of two
central distributions centers, the Northern CDC or the Southern CDC. Other fresh products were
moved quickly through the distribution system in which only three days of fresh product inventory
and a month's worth of dry product inventory was held in each CDC. Barilla

The Importance Of Multiplicative Thinking
Multiplicative thinking, fractions and decimals are important aspects of mathematics required for a
deep conceptual understanding. The following portfolio will discuss the key ideas of each and the
strategies to enable positive teaching. It will highlight certain difficulties and misconceptions that
children face and discuss resources and activities to help alleviate these. It will also acknowledge the
connections between the areas of mathematics and discuss the need for succinct teaching instead of
an isolated approach. Multiplicative Thinking Multiplicative thinking is imperative to a child's
understanding of important mathematical concepts and is seen as the 'big idea' in number that links
multiple key ideas and strategies (Vergnaud, as cited in Siemon, 2011). Commonly, children have a
procedural based view of multiplicative thinking which can hinder progress, as opposed to a more
conceptual view which is a far better learning framework (Hurst & Hurrell, 2016). If teachers are to
maximise a child's learning, they must acknowledge this and help children maintain a conceptual
understanding of multiplicative thinking and emphasise this much more so than procedural rules.
Several key ideas and strategies underpin the success of multiplicative thinking and a greater
conceptual understanding. Hurst and Hurrell (2014) explain that children need to be acutely aware
of the ten times multiplicative relationship between places and how this effects many aspects of
mathematics.

Case Study : Procter And Gamble Essay
What began as a small, family–operated soap and candle company now provides products and
services of superior quality and value to consumers in over 180 countries. However, with the
implementation of the restructuring program, Organization 2005, Procter and Gamble is sent on
slipper slop. Will they be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel? Follow me on the journey
leading up to the reconstruction and to the newfound leadership of A.G. Lafley. Many changes in
Procter & Gamble took place within the decades prior to the reconstruction of 1998. One was the
shift of the US organizational structure from product grouping in the 1950s to a matrix model in the
1990s. Product grouping was quick and more consumer focused business decisions could be made
by brand managers at lower levels in the corporate hierarchy. Brand managers held responsibility for
profitability and could focus on matching company strategy with product– category dynamics. The
company shifted to a matrix model where structure was broken up by business units and centralized
functions. Functional leaders reported directly to their business leadership and also had a dotted–line
reporting relationship to their functional leadership. This shift was made because the US was a
homogenous market focused on brand and functions. Centralizing the structure would give more
condensed focus on both function and brand. Whereas the US shifted from product grouping to a
matrix structure from the 1950s to the 1980s, the

Review Of ' Biosemantics ' Millikan 's Goal For ``...
Jessica Scruggs Phil 307 Response Paper #3 11/11/16 Millikan's "Biosemantics" Millikan's goal for
"Biosementaics" is to explain what connects a representation with the thing it represents. To reach
this goal, Millikan has to explain that there are special conditions that need to be met to form a
connection between a representation and its object. These "content–fixing" conditions cannot be
statistically normal conditions, because normal is a relative term. An example Millikan gives is that
of a red face. Is it a sign of sunburn? Exertion? Overheating? Embarrassment? Or, often times in my
case, alcohol flush? There are numerous views that focus on the idea that what produces a
representation is what makes it what it is. Millikan brings up views by Fodor, Stampe, Matthen, and
Dretske. Millikan dismisses Fodor's idea that content is fixed by a causal connection, but the
representation's role in a functional system is what, in the end, determines how the content is fixed.
She dismisses it because having fixed content means to "act like a representation." Stampe, Matthen,
and Dretske say that the representations have a detecting or indicating role, but Millikan also
dismisses this as unenlightening, because the terms "detect" and "indicate" basically mean to
represent. Millikan refutes all of these notions so that she can explain that the way a representation
is used is what fixes the content, not how it was made. The object of representation stands for
something because there is

Working In A Group Analysis
Working in a group was a great way to get to know my classmates. Despite our differences, we
worked together and completed the assignment. I like working in a group, but sometimes I would
rather do the assignment on my own. Group work has its good and bad effects. Group work allows a
big assignment to be completed at a faster pace than working alone. I did not know much about
zombies, but some of my other group members did. Each individual has different viewpoints;
therefore, it helped us accomplish our ten–paragraph essay in a small amount of time. My group as a
whole was assigned the role of public health. Haley was the leader, and she assigned each group
member a specific task that we were responsible for. Each of us had to write two paragraphs about a
specific situation that was given to us. We worked together and wrote the introduction and
conclusion. I did not like the fact that my grade relied on other people. On the other hand, I had
some control over that by telling them how I felt about what was going on. None of my group
members was a total slacker. Although, I did not know my group members personally, so I was not
sure whether or not they would take responsibility and complete what was assigned to them. They
all pulled through and we achieved our goal of completing the assignment. We each worked ... Show

would have been lost. I would not have known where to even begin. Being in a group allows you to

Groan Group Observation
Through the observation, I hardly saw any progression through the Groan Zone and I assume that is
because this group has been meeting once a week for about 10 years and while they may face
misunderstanding or miscommunication they have worked though enough of it that they have a solid
foundation of shared understanding and the collective thought processes of their teammates. The
group did in fact progress through the Divergent and Convergent Zones. At some points, they
seemed to work through both zones at the same time. For example, while generating a list of ideas
they made sure to summarize the key points of their ideas. After this step they not only looked for
the conflicting issues between their ideas but they could come to agreement on which brainstormed
ideas would work and which ones were forgettable. Finally, the last point that they processed
through was exercising judgment. This process was interesting to observe. First off, it was difficult
to observe and not comment on their ideas and secondly, I could notice the sensitivity when giving
the judgment. No one wanted to sound harsh when giving their feedback. Which I found was a smart
option since they work together daily. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, I noticed the paraphrasing that was done by the facilitator. If anything, this was one of the
most used techniques. I think it was the dominate approach because she could create a new

Throughout my years in graduate school, I found myself with many opportunities to work on group
projects. I always found these projects to be a rewarding experience because it was not only an
opportunity to contribute my experience and ideas to the project but also listen to experience and
ideas of my teammates. However, working on a group project also meant making sure to examine
the work of my teammates and vice–versa. So for each group assignment, I always made sure to
follow certain guidelines I laid out for myself in order to get the assignment completed.
1. Ask questions – especially if I needed a teammate to clarify what they needed from me or if I not
sure about what they wrote.
2. Provide thoughtful suggestions on the work of my

Number Talks Summary
Chapter one in the book Number Talks introduces the rationale for number talks and gives an
overview of the basis of what a number talk would look like in a classroom. Number talks can be
conducted in a small group or whole group setting. It is used to help children develop strategies for
solving math problems and to deepen their understanding of numerical relationships. The three main
goals of teaching through number talk sessions are to help students compute with accuracy,
efficiency, and flexibility (5). Chapter one gives examples of how to highlight different strategies.
For example, it was helpful to me to see the adding–up strategy highlighted by a number line. I often
use this strategy myself with subtraction (only because I took MA 316). I believe there is a great
need in every elementary class for number talks. I took MA 316 and in doing so it was very eye
opening. Growing up, I was taught math through standard algorithms. I was always amazed how
other people just seemed to be good at computing numbers in their head. If I tried, I would visualize
the problem vertically and try to solve it by the algorithm that I had been taught. I did not have an
understanding of the number relationships in depth. I have a daughter in the second grade. I know
by observing her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In chapter two, it stated how important errors are in helping to clear up misconceptions One rule in
math that I have learned and love is that it is always okay to change your mind. As a student thinks
through a problem and self–corrects then learning is taking place. In addition, number talks is
invaluable in teaching children how to articulate their thinking while they defend their answer. In
addition, it is important that children have time to turn and talk to their partner to share their
thinking process. This will help students who are reluctant to share with the whole

Instruction Methods For Teaching Decisions
I honestly thought that this lesson was going to be taught to teach to the class. I spent countless
hours reading the information in the curriculum handbook and even collaborating with other
teachers just to understand the material properly. I was thoroughly surprised at how well the lesson
was received and it greatly boosted my self confidence in my planning and teaching decisions. This
lesson was all about symmetry and dividing "crazy cakes" evenly between two people by looking
for smaller shapes within the larger shape. The shapes of the cakes literally were crazy because they
were not shaped like your normal cake. There were many different angles and sides, because of this
each student had to really sit and visualize what other shapes were inside the cake. I feel that my
instruction methods worked great for this lesson. I followed the plan given to me by the curriculum
book by talking about the activity first then letting the students work together in groups to divide the
cakes as best as possible. I thought it would be beneficial to let students come up to the board and
practice with dividing the cakes before letting them work with their groups. I think that by allowing
a few of them to show their initial thought process allowed others to see how they could divide their
cakes as well. I then gave direct instructions on how we were to transition to our tables and begin
working on their crazy cakes. The classroom has been struggling lately with transitions, so I was

The Career Leadership As A Foundation For One 's Leadership
The Career Leadership Academy (CLA) undoubtedly provides practical, real–world knowledge that
can be applied to an extensive range of circumstances. Implementing the lessons taught in the class
can enable students to successfully build and strengthen relationships in the classroom, on the job,
and with friends and family. Not one of the class's concepts is more important than another, which
pushes students to combine what they have learned to better themselves as individuals, leaders, and
team members. Perhaps the most important fact is that CLA's concepts can serve as a foundation for
one's leadership philosophy.

Many philosophies are established during our upbringings, and personal experiences. A family, for
instance, is like a team in many ways. We have to collaborate, encourage, and motivate one another
to strengthen our cohesiveness. The unbelievable bonds formed within a family are naturally created
during a process. As stated from Leadership and Professionalism, collaboration's purpose is to
"create a shared vision and joint strategies to address concerns that go beyond the purview of any
particular party (Anderson and Bolt, 2013, p.36)." I have found that my experiences with CLA
correlate with this idea. As time progressed, our group began to understand each other, and utilize
our strengths to maximize efficiency. This is because we became more comfortable with each other,
learned how to constructively criticize one another, and developed a productive system. My views
on the "process" obviously go far beyond my experiences in this class, but the experiences have
undoubtedly reassured my philosophy. The Relational Leadership Model provides many ideas that
can guide one's philosophy about leadership, but there are many other concepts that can equally
contribute. At the beginning of the semester, we took the Clifton's Strength Assessment. Knowing
one's strengths can be very beneficial, especially in a group setting. In my signature themes report, it

Dr. Bruce Tuckman's Model Of Group Work
Our group was brought together for a purpose of making a presentation. We were strangers to each
other but expected commitment in terms of attendance, communication, meetings and quality of
work. It can be argued that individuals can be demotivated by group project if they feel their success
depends on others who do not share this views and which might lead to discrimination and
oppression (CMU, 2015). However this might be resolved by a professional organisation of working
process, high motivation and personal responsibility of each group member indicating a successful
group development. This project was a valuable experience for developing our teamwork skills and

By projecting the JOHARI window (West, R. and Turner, L., 2009) on our group at the first stage
when we met it can be said that the Arena window representing facts about the members, their
feelings, desires, and emotions was very small. We had personal awareness towards each other and
probably unconsciously we behaved in a discriminatory way towards assessing each other as we did
not know professional qualities and how far we can trust each other in completing a reliable
presentation. As suggested by some research that group members can project their experience of
oppression and feeling of mistrust from their previous life experience (Lindsay and Orton, 2009).
This probably was the case with our group at the beginning of our project as we all wanted to
achieve good outcomes but had some mistrust in group work as a result of stereotyping the low level
of the communal responsibility. With time the Arena windows (West, R. and Turner, L., 2009) of our
group members expanded as we explored each other's ability to concentrate on the task, meet a
deadline and by giving each other feedback which was appreciated and increased our trust in each
other. The group members admitted that the turning point was a self–disclosing process as described
by Whitaker's group focal conflict theory. There were only four group members out of five present

Chaucer uses symmetry to creatively conclude the driving conflict of the poem, Arcite and
Palamon's conflicting mutual love for Emily. The conflict between the two lovers begins during
their exile in Theseus' prison after being defeated in battle. Palamon is upset by his cousin's
admiration of Emily when he expressed his love interest first; he exclaims, "Yet you would
treacherously go about / To love my lady, whom I love and serve / And ever shall, till death cut my
heart's nerve" (34). He expresses his deep love for Emily and anger that his own cousin does not
support him, but loves the same lady. The conflict over their love of Emily forms a deep rift between
the two men for the length of the poem. The rift is mended at Arcite's request to Emily after he is
fatally injured in celebration of his victory in the tournament: "Who serves you and will serve you
all his life. / And should you ever choose to be a wife, / Forget not Palamon, that great–hearted man"
(78). Chaucer uses symmetry to bring about an end to the violent tournament devised by Theseus, so
that he could determine who would marry Emily. Theseus orders Palamon and Arcite to each gather

  • 1. An Analysis Of Barilla Barilla: An analysis of the Barilla family business Pietro Barilla founded Barilla in 1877 it was a small pasta and bread shop in Parma, Italy and becoming one of the biggest pasta manufacturers in the world. Barilla is a family owned company that has been passed down through four generations. They have factories throughout Italy and other countries. For many years, the pasta shop experienced significant growth and their fair share of downside. They have high–quality products that are marketed and produced in their facilities. However, with any company does not matter how small or big they have their struggles. I this paper I am going to analyze the Barilla family, the company, achievement, and challenges. Family brief history Pietro Barilla was born on May 3, 1845, in Parma, Italy. He grew up with a family of a baker who got him involved at an early age to have a passion for baking. Years later, Pietro became a businessman that innovator in the food industry, which brought him to open a bread and pasta company in 1877. In 1910, his two sons, Riccardo and Gualtiero took over because they wanted to expand their father's business. The two brothers Riccardo managed the day–to–day operations of the factory, while Gualtiero oversaw the sales and promotion. • 3. Giovanni Alessi Research Paper In 1921, Giovanni Alessi and his brother began the Fratelli Alessi Omegna (Alessi Brothers Omegna), otherwise known as the FAO engineering workshop in Omegna, northern Italy. They began by making tableware and household objects made out of copper, brass and nickel. Because all their products were hand crafted, there was a focus on high quality products. In 1932, Carlo Alessi; Giovanni Alessi's eldest son; joined the company. He was responsible for most of the products produced between the mid 1930's and 1945. Towards the end of 1945, one of the most iconic Alessi products was designed and made; the "Bombé" tea and coffee service set. In 1950, Carlo Alessi becomes the General Manager of Alessi. They appeared in an exhibition on 'designer' industrial production for the first time as part of this. In 1970, Alberto Alessi; Giovanni Alessi's grandson; joins the company. He realised that the bond between people and objects is not just shaped by functionality. This would soon change the way that Alessi's products were designed. Alberto Alessi also begins to work with designers Franco Sargiani and Eija Helander to design the packaging, graphics and stands. They also design the Alessi logo that is still used today. In 1977, Richard Sapper designed the first Alessi project for the kitchen; the 9090 espresso coffee maker, and Alessi's first designer kettle; the 9091 kettle with a melodic whistle. Around the same time, designer and design historian, Alessandro Mendini, wrote the first book on Alessi's history, as well as designing the famous 'Anna G' corkscrew. In 1982, 'Dry', Alessi's first cutler set, was designed by Achille Castiglioni. Then in 1983, the cultural icon, 9093 kettle with the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. A Critical Reflection Of Walmart Practice makes perfect. We came into this project knowing we can improve from our first presentation. We knew what areas we had to focus on this time around. We became more comfortable around each other, allowing us to be more expressive without fearing judgment from each other, at least in my point of view. At first, we were a little upset, since we did not want to do a presentation on Walmart. Walmart had a negative connotation to them based on their business practices towards their employees, which pushes me away from their company. Instead, we were hoping to base our project on a sustainable company we, as college students, are closer to, such as New Belgium Brewing. It's funny, but I believe that somewhat make us more close and unified to one another, being able to rally around a common source of frustration. But in the end, we were good. In this project we had to complete for our sustainable company, Walmart, we knew we were being asked to create a creative presentation, to use our imagination to transform the classroom into another world. Creativity is the generation, application, combination, and extension of new ideas. In the context of groups and teams, creativity is inventing or creating a new idea, strategy, principle, or approach to solving a problem (Beebe and Masterson 302). A technique we used to enhance our team creativity was group brainstorming. Brainstorming is a creative problem–solving method, developed by Alex Osborn, designed to help a group ... Will be describing my personal experience working with my assigned group for this course. Furthermore, will be addressing the main three concepts learned through the duration of this course. Those concepts are tribulation, integrity, and team. Group "Group work is a teaching strategy that promotes academic achievement and socialization" (Frykedal, Chiriac, 2011). Part of the role of an efficient leader is to recognize that conflicts and unexpected situations will be presented in any type of organization. Leaders will have to make critical and tough decisions that might bring tribulation. A leader should be able to take control of the situation and provide guidance, always taking in consideration the safety and well being of those who follow. It is important that leaders make choices that "protects the organization and others from undue distraction to the mission" (Dees, 2013, p. 44). Integrity "Integrity is simply telling the truth or staying true to a set of values" (Dees, 2013, p80). Integrity is essential in the effectiveness of a leader. "Integrity is often cited as a critical component of leadership"(Palanski, Simons, & Treviño, 2011). An effective leader understands the need to be an example of honesty and truthfulness." While leaders may wholeheartedly agree with the concept for a subordinate to fully embrace effective followership, he or she must trust in the leader/follower relationship"(Satterlee, 2013, p. 7). Followers will place their trust in a leader that act upon values, moral principles and beliefs. Leaders should understand that every decision would have an effect on those around themselves. "The more choices you make based on integrity, the more this highly prized value will affect your relationships with family and friends, and finally, the fundamental acceptance of yourself"(Dees, 2013, p. ... • 11. Yalom: Group Scenarios In the small clip, from the beginning, Yalom is observed activating the focus on the here–and–now. He discusses in chapter six that he would begin this process in the first group session, after all members discuss their reason for joining the group. He would highlight that all members have likely made impressions of each other, and then invites them to talk about what they came up with. In the group video, this intervention stirred a conversation that provided the opportunity for members to enact their styles of relating to others with members of the group, Alice became quiet, Alan rescued her, etc. I think the process became evident as the first comment made was that Alice was quiet. It seems that meanwhile she asserts that she tries to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He believes that therapist transparency can lead to "here–and–now activation and process illumination" (p. 218). In addition, it seems that Yalom believes that by being authentic the therapist can decentralize her role, and can "foster a deeper exploration on the client's part" (p. 218). Meanwhile mixed results have been reported regarding self–disclosure (Audet, 2011), I find Yalom's argument compelling as he asserts the following: "I am advocating that therapists relate authentically to clients in the here–and–now of the therapy hour, not that they reveal their past and present in a detailed manner" (p. 223). He goes on to explain that he doesn't believe it is helpful when therapists talk about ways they have overcome personal challenges, indicating appropriate boundaries when it comes to transparency, and clients' wellbeing in mind. I agree that certain forms of self–disclosure can pose ethical concerns, as Epstein (1994) indicates; however, some clients will benefit from the therapist's disclosure (Audet & Everall, 2003), and their curiosity does not come from intentionally breaking boundaries, and a therapist's rigid standpoint could hinder the relationship. I have seen therapists have a strong reaction when clients asked a personal question, however, I believe that it makes sense that some clients would need to feel connected by knowing something about the therapist for their comfort level to ... I am not used to having group projects but whenever I did have them, I always worked with people I knew well. I knew I had to try my best and put effort in communicating more with my group members. Although, I tried my best to communicate with others, despite a prolonged or no response. I still failed in asking questions or clarifying information I was not certain about with my group, during the meetings. Therefore, causing me to lose time with my work and stressing about my uncertainties. I did not take the time to think about any questions or comments before group meetings, as well as ask for help. Our organization is called Shield for Children. We worked as a team and finished this presentation together. We had a lot of troubles at the beginning. For example, we have different opinions on the meeting time since we both had our own busy schedule. As a result, we couldn't group together and discussed about the presentation. It involves producing only what is need, when it is needed. The principle of Just in time is to eliminate sources of manufacturing waste by getting the right quantity of raw materials and producing the right quantity of products in the right place at the right time.(1) In this way, manufactures receive parts and materials "just in time" to meet the day's manufacturing quota with hardly any extra.(3) JIT is a manufacturing management method developed in Japan during the 70's to meet customer demands. There was 90 percent reduction in the manufacturing cycle time, 70 percent reductions in inventory, 50 percent reductions in labor costs, and 80 percent reductions in space requirements.(2) All these benefits affect the channel relationship in some way and will benefit the end user, whether it's the cost of the product or the quality. Now that I've given a little overview on the JIT system, I want to talk about a new concept that a company called Barilla SpA wanted to try called, Just–in–time Distribution (JITD). But before I talk about JITD I want to tell you a little about the company. Barilla SpA was founded in 1875 when Pietro Barilla opened a small shop in Parma, Italy. Connected to the shop was a small laboratory that Pietro used to make the pasta and bread products that he sold in his store. Eventually over the years, the company grew and was handed over to Pietro's grandchildren, Pietro and Gianni. Over this time, Barilla evolved from the small ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Barilla Distributors: Implementing Just In Time Distribution Executive Summary My decision is to implement Just in time distribution (JITD) to Barilla Distributors to reduce distribution costs, inventory levels and manufacturing costs. This would enable Barilla to improve relationships with their distributors and provide them with more objective data so that they can improve their own planning procedures. Barilla Operations will have more control on what is being shipped out so that shipments can be planned to optimize full loads. Manufacturing costs can be reduced if schedules are planned in order to enhance operations output....i.e. Reduce down times and ensure long runs of like products to reduce energy costs. Their incentives were based on achieving sales targets set for the canvass periods. These complex systems created resistance from their own internal sales and marketing organization regarding the implementation as they felt that their jobs would be threatened if the JITD program was put in place. Maggiali would need to convince them of the benefits of the change. In order to convince customers to implement the program, Barilla will need to trial the program on their own distribution channels in order to trouble shoot any problems that they encounter and once they have perfected the program, they will be able to sell the idea to their customers. Criteria In this case, implementing the JITD program would allow Barilla Operations to take control of their own manufacturing process and be able to schedule which products are shipped out and control when they ship. The relationship between Barilla and their Distributors will improve as they will need to share information in order for them to achieve their goals. Barilla Operations will be able to improve their own planning procedures which would allow them to evenly distribute the workload on their manufacturing and logistics systems. They will be able to reduce any bottlenecks encountered in certain areas and run more efficiently without disruptions in supply. The ultimate goal is to reduce the costs within the supply chain. The distributors do not use forecasting systems or sophisticated analytical tools for determining order quantities and they have very limited and no seasonal demand data. Accurate demand forecasting is essential for companies and can be obtained by utilizing central demand information where each stage of the supply chain understands the forecast data. Inflated Orders Since Barilla's distributors and retailers only perform periodic reviews of their inventory systems at times they would experience stock outs, which would create demand fluctuations in products when they were temporarily out of stock. In order to meet the demands Barilla would have to change their manufacturing and logistics operations which strained the production facility because of the different processes procedures in place for "dry" and "fresh" products. Lead Time Barilla is experiencing lead time fluctuations in their product lines, which vary from 8 to 14 days from the time the order is placed to the time the product is received by the distributors. In some instances supermarkets would place their orders by fax and it would take up to 24 to 48 hours for it to be received by the distributor. When is the last time someone asked you for a "brief update" on the status of an upcoming project in "about an hour"? The more you practice giving impromptu presentations, the more comfortable you become doing so. Just as people trained to respond to emergencies at a moment's notice, you will be able to respond with a solid presentation at a moment's notice. Consider the following key points as well as how to best communicate the content that is necessary for the requested presentation. Please With Threes A lesson I teach early in my presentation skills workshops, and that I learned in school and in Toastmasters clubs, is to "please with threes". Otherwise called the rule of threes, this means that you create a presentation using a speech structure that consists of three main components: an opening, a body, and a closing. Manage these three major parts of a presentation and your speech will be organized every time. Get Off on the Right Foot Develop an attention–grabbing opening. On short notice, few people expect you to be witty or humorous. Typically, last–minute presenters are expected to address a specific issue or concern.

  • 36. Soccer Team Reflection Paper In the beginning of class, we watched a film that reminded me of high school varsity soccer because some of my coaches were both theory Y and theory X. My coaches would act in a very direct and negative form which made us not want to continue being in the team but in the end, the coaches taught us many leadership skills and also discipline which was key in a sports team. I personally felt like I was both theories because I was the team captain so the ways I was communicate with my players made me feel like I am a very mean person but I wanted my team mates to know the expectations in order to be in a very competitive soccer team. I felt like I had to be both theories in order to get my message across in the best form as possible. I had to be harsh in order to show that my coaches and I were not just playing around, we were dedicating our time into make the best soccer team in the USD 500 district. Towards the end of the soccer season I was seeing positive results from each and every one of the players. It made me very happy that I got my message across even though I wasn't naturally a theory X but I had to put myself in the players position. I felt like if I was only a theory Y, half of the team wouldn't take me serious. The coaches in the film were a great example of how both theories could have a good result when it comes to forming a team. Having diversity among the team makes a leader think about every angle of how to approach the whole team because having diversity means that individuals have different backgrounds. It can be difficult to address the whole team on what's expected and the standards that they should be aiming for in order to continue being in the soccer team. As a leader of the soccer team, it was very challenging at some situations because all my teammates were depending on me in order to have positive results. The team builder activity that we did in class was very interesting to do because every person in the group had restrictions and limitations on what they could contribute in the group which made me a bit challenging especially because time was against our favor. The time increases when comparing Group A to Group B, but not Group B to Group C. The same also applies to Group C to Group D and then a decrease from Group D to Group E. Figure 1 shows a clearer picture of the RT when compared to all of the reaction time. Even though the time decreases in some areas, there is clear increase or RT when looking from the youngest to olderst. When looking at the graph, there is statistical significance in some of the areas and not in others. All data was calculated at a 95% confidence level. The difference from Group A to Group B is only 0.2538 seconds, but when the data is compared to each other, the probability (P–Value) is 0.000287. This is a significant difference between the two. From Group B to Group C, there is a 0.01 second decrease in time, which has a P– Value of 0.4698. This is not a statistical difference and leaves room for this time to not be a normal outcome. Group C and Group D has a 0.2289 seconds increase, but when calculated with the raw data, there is no significant difference with a P–Value of 0.0833. Leading In The Here And Now: Video Analysis During the "Part III: Conflict and Summation" in the video Group Work: Leading in the Here and Now (Association for Specialists in Group Work, n.d.), the group worked through a tremendous amount of conflict. The main driving force for the conflict was based on self–disclosure that group member Jean offered to the group, surrounding her feelings of anger and distrust with the other members. Her comments sparked the group to investigate and explore their own feelings and emotions not only towards Jean, but the group itself. Corey, Corey, and Corey (2010) noted that, "by taking risks in disclosing here–and–now observations and reactions, members are actively creating trust and making it possible to engage in deeper self–exploration," (p. 253). While Jean's comments upset some individuals in the group, it initiated open and honest responses from the rest of the group. The need theory wasn't properly taken into consideration in my group as some people didn't care to know about what motivates others in the group. • 57. The Importance Of Multiplicative Thinking Multiplicative thinking, fractions and decimals are important aspects of mathematics required for a deep conceptual understanding. The following portfolio will discuss the key ideas of each and the strategies to enable positive teaching. It will highlight certain difficulties and misconceptions that children face and discuss resources and activities to help alleviate these. It will also acknowledge the connections between the areas of mathematics and discuss the need for succinct teaching instead of an isolated approach. Multiplicative Thinking Multiplicative thinking is imperative to a child's understanding of important mathematical concepts and is seen as the 'big idea' in number that links multiple key ideas and strategies (Vergnaud, as cited in Siemon, 2011). Commonly, children have a procedural based view of multiplicative thinking which can hinder progress, as opposed to a more conceptual view which is a far better learning framework (Hurst & Hurrell, 2016). If teachers are to maximise a child's learning, they must acknowledge this and help children maintain a conceptual understanding of multiplicative thinking and emphasise this much more so than procedural rules. Several key ideas and strategies underpin the success of multiplicative thinking and a greater conceptual understanding. Hurst and Hurrell (2014) explain that children need to be acutely aware of the ten times multiplicative relationship between places and how this effects many aspects of mathematics. ... Case Study : Procter And Gamble Essay What began as a small, family–operated soap and candle company now provides products and services of superior quality and value to consumers in over 180 countries. However, with the implementation of the restructuring program, Organization 2005, Procter and Gamble is sent on slipper slop. Will they be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel? Follow me on the journey leading up to the reconstruction and to the newfound leadership of A.G. Lafley. Many changes in Procter & Gamble took place within the decades prior to the reconstruction of 1998. One was the shift of the US organizational structure from product grouping in the 1950s to a matrix model in the 1990s. Product grouping was quick and more consumer focused business decisions could be made by brand managers at lower levels in the corporate hierarchy. Brand managers held responsibility for profitability and could focus on matching company strategy with product– category dynamics. The company shifted to a matrix model where structure was broken up by business units and centralized functions. Functional leaders reported directly to their business leadership and also had a dotted–line reporting relationship to their functional leadership. This shift was made because the US was a homogenous market focused on brand and functions. Centralizing the structure would give more condensed focus on both function and brand. Whereas the US shifted from product grouping to a matrix structure from the 1950s to the 1980s, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Review Of ' Biosemantics ' Millikan 's Goal For ``... Jessica Scruggs Phil 307 Response Paper #3 11/11/16 Millikan's "Biosemantics" Millikan's goal for "Biosementaics" is to explain what connects a representation with the thing it represents. To reach this goal, Millikan has to explain that there are special conditions that need to be met to form a connection between a representation and its object. These "content–fixing" conditions cannot be statistically normal conditions, because normal is a relative term. An example Millikan gives is that of a red face. Is it a sign of sunburn? Exertion? Overheating? Embarrassment? Or, often times in my case, alcohol flush? There are numerous views that focus on the idea that what produces a representation is what makes it what it is. Millikan brings up views by Fodor, Stampe, Matthen, and Dretske. Millikan dismisses Fodor's idea that content is fixed by a causal connection, but the representation's role in a functional system is what, in the end, determines how the content is fixed. She dismisses it because having fixed content means to "act like a representation." Stampe, Matthen, and Dretske say that the representations have a detecting or indicating role, but Millikan also dismisses this as unenlightening, because the terms "detect" and "indicate" basically mean to represent. Millikan refutes all of these notions so that she can explain that the way a representation is used is what fixes the content, not how it was made. The object of representation stands for something because there is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I like working in a group, but sometimes I would rather do the assignment on my own. Group work has its good and bad effects. Group work allows a big assignment to be completed at a faster pace than working alone. I did not know much about zombies, but some of my other group members did. Each individual has different viewpoints; therefore, it helped us accomplish our ten–paragraph essay in a small amount of time. My group as a whole was assigned the role of public health. Haley was the leader, and she assigned each group member a specific task that we were responsible for. Each of us had to write two paragraphs about a specific situation that was given to us. We worked together and wrote the introduction and conclusion. I did not like the fact that my grade relied on other people. On the other hand, I had some control over that by telling them how I felt about what was going on. None of my group members was a total slacker. Although, I did not know my group members personally, so I was not sure whether or not they would take responsibility and complete what was assigned to them. They all pulled through and we achieved our goal of completing the assignment. We each worked ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I liked having my peers there to help me with my writing. Groan Group Observation Through the observation, I hardly saw any progression through the Groan Zone and I assume that is because this group has been meeting once a week for about 10 years and while they may face misunderstanding or miscommunication they have worked though enough of it that they have a solid foundation of shared understanding and the collective thought processes of their teammates. The group did in fact progress through the Divergent and Convergent Zones. At some points, they seemed to work through both zones at the same time. For example, while generating a list of ideas they made sure to summarize the key points of their ideas. After this step they not only looked for the conflicting issues between their ideas but they could come to agreement on which brainstormed ideas would work and which ones were forgettable. Finally, the last point that they processed through was exercising judgment. This process was interesting to observe. First off, it was difficult to observe and not comment on their ideas and secondly, I could notice the sensitivity when giving the judgment. No one wanted to sound harsh when giving their feedback. Which I found was a smart option since they work together daily. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First, I noticed the paraphrasing that was done by the facilitator. If anything, this was one of the most used techniques. I think it was the dominate approach because she could create a new conversation through paraphrasing and it stopped her from giving her input, while also giving her clarification on an idea she might have been questionable about. Secondly, I noticed the facilitator using the drawing out method. She realized my director was being silent and she managed to draw her out and add her into the discussion ... • 67. Group Project Reflection Throughout my years in graduate school, I found myself with many opportunities to work on group projects. I always found these projects to be a rewarding experience because it was not only an opportunity to contribute my experience and ideas to the project but also listen to experience and ideas of my teammates. However, working on a group project also meant making sure to examine the work of my teammates and vice–versa. So for each group assignment, I always made sure to follow certain guidelines I laid out for myself in order to get the assignment completed. 1. Ask questions – especially if I needed a teammate to clarify what they needed from me or if I not sure about what they wrote. 2. Provide thoughtful suggestions on the work of my ... • 69. Number Talks Summary Chapter one in the book Number Talks introduces the rationale for number talks and gives an overview of the basis of what a number talk would look like in a classroom. Number talks can be conducted in a small group or whole group setting. It is used to help children develop strategies for solving math problems and to deepen their understanding of numerical relationships. The three main goals of teaching through number talk sessions are to help students compute with accuracy, efficiency, and flexibility (5). Chapter one gives examples of how to highlight different strategies. For example, it was helpful to me to see the adding–up strategy highlighted by a number line. I often use this strategy myself with subtraction (only because I took MA 316). I believe there is a great need in every elementary class for number talks. I took MA 316 and in doing so it was very eye opening. Growing up, I was taught math through standard algorithms. I was always amazed how other people just seemed to be good at computing numbers in their head. If I tried, I would visualize the problem vertically and try to solve it by the algorithm that I had been taught. I did not have an understanding of the number relationships in depth. In addition, number talks is invaluable in teaching children how to articulate their thinking while they defend their answer. In addition, it is important that children have time to turn and talk to their partner to share their thinking process. This will help students who are reluctant to share with the whole ... • 71. Instruction Methods For Teaching Decisions I honestly thought that this lesson was going to be taught to teach to the class. I spent countless hours reading the information in the curriculum handbook and even collaborating with other teachers just to understand the material properly. I was thoroughly surprised at how well the lesson was received and it greatly boosted my self confidence in my planning and teaching decisions. This lesson was all about symmetry and dividing "crazy cakes" evenly between two people by looking for smaller shapes within the larger shape. The shapes of the cakes literally were crazy because they were not shaped like your normal cake. There were many different angles and sides, because of this each student had to really sit and visualize what other shapes were inside the cake. I feel that my instruction methods worked great for this lesson. I followed the plan given to me by the curriculum book by talking about the activity first then letting the students work together in groups to divide the cakes as best as possible. I thought it would be beneficial to let students come up to the board and practice with dividing the cakes before letting them work with their groups. I think that by allowing a few of them to show their initial thought process allowed others to see how they could divide their cakes as well. I then gave direct instructions on how we were to transition to our tables and begin working on their crazy cakes. The classroom has been struggling lately with transitions, so I was very ... The Career Leadership As A Foundation For One 's Leadership The Career Leadership Academy (CLA) undoubtedly provides practical, real–world knowledge that can be applied to an extensive range of circumstances. Implementing the lessons taught in the class can enable students to successfully build and strengthen relationships in the classroom, on the job, and with friends and family. Not one of the class's concepts is more important than another, which pushes students to combine what they have learned to better themselves as individuals, leaders, and team members. Perhaps the most important fact is that CLA's concepts can serve as a foundation for one's leadership philosophy. I. Many philosophies are established during our upbringings, and personal experiences. A family, for instance, is like a team in many ways. We have to collaborate, encourage, and motivate one another to strengthen our cohesiveness. The unbelievable bonds formed within a family are naturally created during a process. As stated from Leadership and Professionalism, collaboration's purpose is to "create a shared vision and joint strategies to address concerns that go beyond the purview of any particular party (Anderson and Bolt, 2013, p.36)." I have found that my experiences with CLA correlate with this idea. As time progressed, our group began to understand each other, and utilize our strengths to maximize efficiency. This is because we became more comfortable with each other, learned how to constructively criticize one another, and developed a productive system. My views on the "process" obviously go far beyond my experiences in this class, but the experiences have undoubtedly reassured my philosophy. The Relational Leadership Model provides many ideas that can guide one's philosophy about leadership, but there are many other concepts that can equally contribute. At the beginning of the semester, we took the Clifton's Strength Assessment. Knowing one's strengths can be very beneficial, especially in a group setting. • 77. Dr. Bruce Tuckman's Model Of Group Work Our group was brought together for a purpose of making a presentation. We were strangers to each other but expected commitment in terms of attendance, communication, meetings and quality of work. It can be argued that individuals can be demotivated by group project if they feel their success depends on others who do not share this views and which might lead to discrimination and oppression (CMU, 2015). However this might be resolved by a professional organisation of working process, high motivation and personal responsibility of each group member indicating a successful group development. By projecting the JOHARI window (West, R. and Turner, L., 2009) on our group at the first stage when we met it can be said that the Arena window representing facts about the members, their feelings, desires, and emotions was very small. We had personal awareness towards each other and probably unconsciously we behaved in a discriminatory way towards assessing each other as we did not know professional qualities and how far we can trust each other in completing a reliable presentation. As suggested by some research that group members can project their experience of oppression and feeling of mistrust from their previous life experience (Lindsay and Orton, 2009). This probably was the case with our group at the beginning of our project as we all wanted to achieve good outcomes but had some mistrust in group work as a result of stereotyping the low level of the communal responsibility. With time the Arena windows (West, R. and Turner, L., 2009) of our group members expanded as we explored each other's ability to concentrate on the task, meet a deadline and by giving each other feedback which was appreciated and increased our trust in each other. The group members admitted that the turning point was a self–disclosing process as described by Whitaker's group focal conflict theory. Examples Of Symmetry In The Knight's Tale , their symmetry, their happy balance; in a word it is all that introduces order, all that gives unity, that permits us to see clearly and to comprehend at once both the ensemble and the details" (Poincaré). The need for symmetry to understand the whole is found not only in math, but also in literature. In The Knight's Tale, symmetry provides balance to stories by highlighting critical aspects for understanding. The balance of conflict and resolution help complete the story and create a sense of harmony for the reader. Chaucer uses symmetry to creatively conclude the driving conflict of the poem, Arcite and Palamon's conflicting mutual love for Emily. The conflict between the two lovers begins during their exile in Theseus' prison after being defeated in battle. Palamon is upset by his cousin's admiration of Emily when he expressed his love interest first; he exclaims, "Yet you would treacherously go about / To love my lady, whom I love and serve / And ever shall, till death cut my heart's nerve" (34). He expresses his deep love for Emily and anger that his own cousin does not support him, but loves the same lady. The conflict over their love of Emily forms a deep rift between the two men for the length of the poem. The rift is mended at Arcite's request to Emily after he is fatally injured in celebration of his victory in the tournament: "Who serves you and will serve you all his life. / And should you ever choose to be a wife, / Forget not Palamon, that great–hearted man" (78). Chaucer uses symmetry to bring about an end to the violent tournament devised by Theseus, so that he could determine who would marry Emily. Theseus orders Palamon and Arcite to each gather an army so that they could fight to the death to win Emily: "To Emily. To this I give my name, / My faith and honour, as I am a knight. / Whichever of you proves of greater might" (52–53). The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
